Karen Hauer on Strictly Come Dancing

Exclusive: Karen Hauer on her dream of being a Strictly judge, Giovanni Pernice's exit and hopes for 2024 partner

Karen is hoping to follow in anton du beke's footsteps.

Nicky Morris

As the longest-serving pro, Strictly Come Dancing 's Karen Hauer has proved herself to be one of the show's most-loved stars. But after 12 years, the 42-year-old is hoping to follow in the footsteps of her co-star Anton Du Beke in becoming a judge on the show.

As the buzz around the 2024 line-up starts to build, Karen sat down with HELLO! for an exclusive interview about the new series, sharing her thoughts on Giovanni Pernice 's exit, her dream of sitting behind the judging panel and her close bond with co-star Gorka Marquez as they prepare for their biggest dance tour to date.

Karen Hauer dancing in pink dress

"I still feel like the new kid on the block," said Karen ahead of her 13th year as a Strictly professional. " Every year feels fresh, but I just feel different ," she explained. "I feel really experienced in it, and it's just a joy to be asked back because you're never sure. It's not something that you have a long contract with, it's per year that they ask you back. So I'm really proud of myself."

During her time on the show, Karen has trained and danced with the likes of Will Young, Jamie Laing, and was partnered with Jayde Adams in one of the 2022 season's same-sex couples. While she's yet to find out who she'll be paired with this year, Karen is hoping her celebrity partner will embrace the "nuts" Strictly journey.

Strictly Come Dancing professionals

"I just want somebody that is going to enjoy it and open to being out of their comfort zone," she said. " I think you just have to be open to it because it is nuts but it's an opportunity of a lifetime and a chance that a lot of people would love to have."

MORE STRICTLY STARS

While the celebrity line-up has yet to be revealed, this year's cast of professionals will look a little different following the departure of Giovanni Pernice , who's currently facing allegations about his behaviour in training.

When asked if she'll miss the Italian dancer, Karen said: "Yeah, of course. You know, every time someone leaves the show, they're sorely missed.

Eddie Kadi and Karen Hauer dancing in movie week

"We've had so many amazing dancers come and go, it won't be any different this time. We'll definitely miss him ," she added.

As for Karen's future on the show, she's hoping to swap the dance floor for a seat on the judging panel, like former pro Anton did in 2021. "I'd love to follow Anton's steps and hopefully be a judge at some point," revealed the star, adding: "But right now, I'm just really enjoying being part of the show in whatever form.

"I'm just happy to have a job," she joked.

Karen credits Strictly  for opening the doors to new opportunities, as well as her close friendship with fellow dancer Gorka Márquez, who she'll be travelling the UK with for their upcoming stage show, Speakeasy.

Following the success of their debut show Firedance, the duo are embarking on their biggest-ever UK tour. In 2025, the pair will bring a range of iconic dances to the stage as they take audiences on a journey through time, from the clandestine speakeasy bars of New York to the Burlesque Cabaret Clubs of the mid-1900's.

Opening up about her and Gorka's strong bond, Karen revealed the pair became "best friends" after realising just how much they had in common. " We pretty much have the same brain but in two different bodies , we get along so well," explained the star. "It's funny when he first joined in 2016, we knew each other but we really got to know each other when we started doing gigs.

"All of a sudden we were like, 'Wow, we have a lot in common'. We both speak Spanish, we both like the same music, and we both have the same humour. It just works."

While the pair take their work seriously, they also "like to have fun," said Karen. "He keeps me on my toes, but he's literally one of my best friends."

BBC Strictly Come Dancing's Dianne Buswell and Vito Coppola put on spot over Giovanni Pernice as co-star breaks silence

Strictly Come Dancing stars Dianne Buswell and Vito Coppola were awkwardly put on the spot when they were quizzed over Giovanni Pernice omission from this year's series.

The pair appeared on This Morning to talk about their return to the BBC One dance contest as it celebrates its 20th birthday later this year as well as their upcoming joint tour.

But during the chat, talk turned to Dianne and Vito's departing co-star after it was revealed Giovanni wouldn't be taking part in the 2024 series amid allegations about his behaviour, including that of "threatening and abusive behaviour" towards his former partners.

He previously rejected the allegations and said he looks “forward to clearing my name”. Giovanni, 33, issued a fresh statement on Sunday morning (June 16) and said he is “co-operating fully” with an ongoing BBC investigation and is looking forward to “clearing my name and establishing the truth”.

The star wrote on Instagram: "To my fans and followers, Every week, there are totally untrue stories about me in the media. As you know, I have always rejected any suggestion of abusive or threatening behaviour. The latest accusations are simply false. I am co-operating fully with the ongoing BBC investigation, which will determine the truth.

"As requested, I have stayed silent, but I am looking forward to the conclusion of the investigation and ultimately clearing my name and establishing the truth. I am so happy to be back on tour. Thank you all for your continued support – your messages and love mean so very much to me. I will hopefully see many of you very soon and I look forward to clearing my name. With love, Giovanni."

When faced with the dancers, who have just finished their stint in the Strictly professionals tour, This Morning co-host Ben Shephard couldn't help but wonder how the allegations weighing against the 33-year-old would impact the series as well as their teaching style this year.

Awkwardness seemed to linger in the air until Dianne and Vito expressed their optimism for Strictly's 20th year on our screens, and made particular reference to the good news that Amy Dowden will be returning to the dancefloor for this year's series following her cancer diagnosis.

When probed on teaching styles, Dianne, who made it to the final of the 2023 series with EastEnders' Bobby Brazier, said her style was "never the same" from partner to partner, stating: "I change my teaching style with every single celebrity that I'm given because they're all so different, they've all got different qualities about them."

She added: "It's about getting to know them and you really do understand how to teach them in the right way. It changes year after year for me, it's never the same (...) I love that part about it." Reigning champ Vito then chimed in, insisting they were "able to adapt their way of teaching", sharing a "unique experience" with their celeb partners each year.

Meanwhile, Strictly's head judge Shirley Ballas has spoken out in support of Giovanni. In a new interview, Shirley has described Giovanni as a "true gentleman" and as a "hard worker" who always tries his best. She told Best magazine: "I think everybody in the 'Strictly' cast is fantastic and I've known Giovanni a long, long time.

"I've known him probably longer than a lot of people have known him and I can only talk from personal experience. He's got a work ethic that is the same as mine. He works hard and he wants the best for anybody who wants to learn. He's a true gentleman, and of course, he always looks drop-dead gorgeous."

Shirley also noted that Giovanni is an incredibly considerate person in general who goes out of his way to make someone feel "super-special". She added: "He always puts his best foot forward and is always on time, he's one of those very thoughtful people.

Ellie Leach has joked that Vito Coppola is 'always watching' as their friendship continues away from the ballroom. It has already been several months since the actress and the dancer won Strictly Come Dancing 2023, and a new series is now just around the corner.

Ellie became the youngest-ever winner of the BBC One dance contest after she danced and performed her way through the 13-week competition alongside her Italian dance partner Vito. And the pair were left speechless when host Tess Daly confirmed they were the winners of Strictly 2023 before they lifted the coveted Glitterball trophy.

Since then, Ellie, 23, and Vito, 33, appeared closer than ever as they toured the country in the Strictly Come Dancing Live show before going their separate ways. However, sometimes the new friends aren't actually too far away from one another.

They have enjoyed a few reunions, with Ellie watching Vito in the Strictly Come Dancing The Professionals live tour last month when the found themselves both performing under the same roof, but in different venues, on the same night as Ellie continues to play Miss Scarlett in Cluedo 2 - The Next Chapter, which is her debut stage role.

Now, Ellie has had another reminder of Vito as she headed to a nearby cafe during her latest tour stop and couldn't help but share the coincidence on social media. Sharing a picture of the cafe front on her Instagram Story, she wrote: "He's always watching!!!!!!" She added: "Walking to work this morning and stumbled across this cafe," which was called the 'Aubergine cafe' and fans may recall Ellie and Vito dubbed themselves the 'aubergine team' while taking part in Strictly.

Resharing the post to his own Instagram Story, Vito said: "This made me laugh so much in the middle of the street that people thought I was crazy... (actually I am)." He added: "We are everywhere baby ahahaha."

Ellie also previously revealed she isn't going to forget Vito, or their friendship, in a hurry as she revealed how she'd had what appeared to be a phone wrist strap and beaded jewellery sent to her with 'LuLu', the name often attributed to her by her Italian pal. Alongside the picture of the Items from Lilli-Bet, the former Coronation Street star said: "Omg I can't cope with how cute these are. Thank you sooo much @lilibetbeads."

It comes after Ellie and Vito were both left speechless and delighted as they were given some exciting news. It was revealed that Ellie and Vito have been named among the nominees at this year's National Reality TV Awards.

The former soap star and Italian dancer have received a nod in the Best Performance in a Reality TV Show category where they are up against Britain's Got Talent 2024 winner Sydnie Christmas , Brad Kella from Channel 4's The Piano and The Masked Singer stars Lemar and Alex Brooker.

Sharing the news to his Instagram Story, Vito said: "Omg. Cannot believe this! We have been nominated. Thank you so much. For supporting and voting for us please go on this page, click the link and tick our names." He added: "Babyyy @ellielouiseleach This is a surprise. We didn't expect that." Ellie then reshared Vito's post to her own Instagram Story and said:" Didn't expect this at all!!!!!! Visit the @nationalrealitytvawards page to vote."

Giovanni Pernice on Strictly Come Dancing

Giovanni Pernice is reportedly in talks for the Italian version of Strictly Come Dancing , after quitting the BBC programme.

Earlier this month, the 2024 line-up professional dancers , including  Amy Dowden  returning after her cancer diagnosis and  reigning champion Vito Coppola , was confirmed.

However, Giovanni, 33, has not been included, following reports he had quit the show, and after claims that the  BBC  was launching an investigation into his behaviour and teaching methods.

For the past few months, the Italian dancer has faced accusations by former contestants, including  Amanda Abbington , who  quit Strictly after five weeks  last year, citing ‘personal reasons’ at the time, before saying her experience  left her with PTSD .

It is believed that Amanda met with Giovanni’s former dancer partners  Laura Whitmore  and  Ranvir Singh  to ‘compare notes’ about their experiences with him on the show, and have considered launching legal action.

Meanwhile, Giovanni has defended himself on social media, saying he ‘rejects any suggestion of abusive or threatening behaviour, and I look forward to clearing my name’, and is said to have instructed lawyers to fight the claims.

Giovanni Pernice

It’s now been claimed he’s in talks for an international version of Strictly.

A source said: ‘Giovanni is in advanced talks to join the Italian version of Strictly, Dancing with the Stars.

‘Bosses are really keen to sign him as a judge given his fame and status in the UK but are also open to the dancer performing as a professional, if he still wants to compete.’

The insider added to MailOnline : ‘It’s a great move for Giovanni, who has weighed up the possibility of doing shows like I’m A Celeb, but dance will always be his passion.

Giovanni Pernice and Amanda Abbington on Strictly Come Dancing

‘All he wants is a fresh start and to join Dancing with the Stars in Italy will certainly give him the new chapter he’s been hoping for.’

Giovanni is currently on tour with his co-star Anton Du Beke , amid an outpouring of support from other Strictly dancers.

In his latest statement, which was posted on Sunday June 16, Giovanni wrote: ‘To my fans and followers, Every week, there are totally untrue stories about me in the media.

‘As you know, I have always rejected any suggestion of abusive or threatening behaviour. The latest accusations are simply false.’

Giovanni Pernice

He continued: ‘I am cooperating fully with the ongoing BBC investigation, which will determine the truth. As requested, I have stayed silent, but I am looking forward to the conclusion of the investigation and ultimately clearing my name and establishing the truth.

‘I am so happy to be back on tour. Thank you all for your continued support – you messages and love mean so very much to me. I will hopefully see many of you very soon and I look forward to clearing my name. With love, Giovanni.’

Metro.co.uk has approached Giovanni’s reps for comment.
