It's got to be a tough job being Beyoncé in preparation for her Formation World Tour, having to choose between which of her 8 billion hits to play for global audiences. The easiest answer: all of them!

The musician launched the tour at Miami's Marlins Park on 27 April, with the setlist revealing an epic 37-song beast of a show, incorporating swathes of material from each of Queen Bey's eras; including a mash-up of "Drunk in Love" and Kendrick Lamar's "Swimming Pools", as well as the Fifty Shades of Grey remix of "Crazy in Love" with elements of Destiny Child's "Bootylicious".

Opening just a few days after her surprise drop of new album Lemonade , the tour incorporates eight tracks from her dose of new material: "Hold Up", "Freedom", "Sorry", "Don't Hurt Yourself", "All Night", "Daddy Lessons", and "Formation".

Setlist for Formation World Tour

Formation Sorry Bow Down / Tom Ford Run the World (Girls) Mine Baby Boy / Standing on the Sun Hold Up Countdown Me, Myself and I Runnin’ All Night 6 Inch Don’t Hurt Yourself (with elements of “Freakum Dress”) Ring the Alarm Lost Yo Mind / I Been On / Independent Woman / Naughty Girl Diva Flawless (Remix) Feeling Myself (Nicki Minaj cover) Yoncé 7/11 Drunk in Love (with elements of “Swimming Pools”)

Every cameo in Beyoncé's Lemonade

Partition Rocket Hip Hop Star Daddy Lessons Single Ladies Purple Rain (Prince cover) Crazy in Love (2014 Remix) (with elements of “Bootylicious”) Naughty Girl Party Blow Sweet Dreams Die With You Freedom Survivor (Destiny’s Child song) End of Time / Grown Woman (Mashup) Halo

Obviously, this setlist is entirely subject to change as the tour progresses; it'll be interesting to see whether her tribute to Prince, with "Purple Rain" featuring during the concert, was a one-off moment or will become an integrated part of the tour.

The show ended with a performance of "Halo", dedicated to her husband Jay Z ; of particular interest after themes running throughout Lemonade seemed to suggest he may have been involved in an affair.

Beyonce Kicks Off ‘Formation World Tour': See the Opening and Set List

Beyonce kicked off her Formation World Tour on Wednesay April 27 — just days after the massive premiere of her new album, Lemonade (April 23) — in Miami's Marlins Park.

Performing to the sold-out Florida crowd, Queen Bey ran through a whopping 37-song setlist, including new tracks like "Sorry," "Daddy Lessons," "All Night" (which she reportedly cited as her favorite track off the new record) and, of course, "Formation," which she opened with.

Longtime fan-favorite hits including "Naughty Girl," "Crazy in Love," and Destiny's Child's "Bootylicious" were also performed — the latter two tracks mashed up — and famous friends like Rick Ross, Michelle Williams, and (duh) Jay Z were spotted in the front row.

Later in the evening, the artist honored the late Prince with an emotional tribute to "Purple Rain," the first of two tributes she would make. (She covered Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams" six songs later.)

As the concert came to an end, Beyonce closed her set with "Halo," dedicating the ethereal song to her partner. "I wanna dedicate this to my beautiful husband," she reportedly told the crowd. "I love you so much!"

Background [ ]

On February 6, 2016, Beyoncé released " Formation " for free on the music streaming service TIDAL and its accompanying music video on her official YouTube. On February 7, 2016, Beyoncé performed "Formation" during her guest appearance at the Super Bowl 50 halftime show. Immediately after the performance, a commercial aired announcing The Formation World Tour, which would kick off in Miami on April 27, with the first pre-sales going on sale just two days after the announcement on February 9, 2016.

The focal point of the tour's main-stage was a 60 feet tall rotating cuboid, nicknamed the 'Monolith' by designers. The stage also consists of a runway, which also acts as a treadmill leading onto a B-stage that fills with a pool of water. The treadmill on the catwalk was designed to be waterproof in order to withstand unpredictable weather found in outdoor stadiums. The B-stage stores 2,000 gallons of water inside of it and takes approximately 10 minutes to fill up, which occurs without the audience even realizing.

The setlist varies from date to date, but in total it has been composed of 45 songs: 9 from Lemonade , 7 from Beyoncé , 7 from 4 , 4 from Dangerously In Love , 2 from B'Day , 2 from I Am... Sasha Fierce , 2 collaborations, 1 soundtrack song, 1 Destiny's Child song, and 6 other songs that are used as intros/interludes that Beyoncé does not perform.

Beyoncé’s Formation World Tour: The Complete Breakdown of Her First Show

By Liz Tracy

Beyoncé ’s performances can sometimes feel a bit serious, with her structured, synchronized dancers and no-one-wakes-up-like-that style. But at the kick-off of her Formation World Tour last night at Marlins Park in Miami, it seems like she finally found what it is that makes her smile. She appeared to have embraced the entirety of her intense nature, found the joy it it, then brought it to the stage. She was exact without seeming meticulous (which she obviously is), not to mention vulnerable and a little giddy. Instead of bowing before her, the Beyhive shook, swayed, and squealed alongside their queen.

The release of her new album, Lemonade , and its visual accompaniment just days before this arena show left no one in the dark about why Solange attacked Jay Z in that elevator. It seemed Bey wrote and sang her way through her grief to forgiveness in her marriage. And, as trite as it sounds, maybe that trial overcome was why the gleam in her eye was brighter than ever.

There was really no better way to open up in the Magic City than with living meme DJ Khaled presenting a receiving line of surprise guest rappers, each for a few minutes in the spotlight of an almost empty stadium: Rick Ross , 2 Chainz , Yo Gotti , Lil Wayne , Trick Daddy, Kent Jones, and finally, Future . Beyoncé, on the other hand, does only Beyoncé. She isn't the type to mess with surprises in the live setting very often (album releases are another story). This is her show, and she's who you came to see. Here’s a complete breakdown of what went down last night.

The Setlist

She sang a seamless 37-song mix starting with “ Formation ,” moving through a well-paced serving of Lemonade songs and forgotten early gems, ending with a string of popular, danceable bangers and a touching final few moments.

"Formation" "Sorry" "Bow Down / Tom Ford" "Run the World (Girls)" "Mine" "Baby Boy" "Hold Up" "Countdown" "Me, Myself and I" "Runnin'" (Naughty Boy song Bey appears on) "All Night" "Don’t Hurt Yourself" "Ring the Alarm" "Diva" "Flawless (Remix)" "Feeling Myself" "Yoncé" "7/11" "Drunk in Love" "Rocket" "Daddy Lessons" "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" "Purple Rain" (Prince cover, obviously) "Crazy in Love/Bootylicious" "Naughty Girl" "Party" "Blow / Nasty Girl" "Sweet Dreams" (Eurythmics cover) "Sweet Dreams" (Bey's song) " Freedom " "Survivor" "End of Time/Grown Woman" "Halo"

The Performance

The lights shut off suddenly just minutes after the 8:30 p.m. start time and were replaced by a rotating rectangular cube screen that stood as high as the stadium. To the distinctive opening notes of “Formation,” the display showed a massive moving image of the singer with an orchid in her mouth that soon changed to artsy—but not screensaver-ish—nature scenes.

At first, it seemed like you could see her thighs gliding through the smoke as a tidy bevy of black-clad women in wide-brimmed hats sauntered out. Another mirror image gang suddenly appeared on the other side of the stage. It was there that the queen in all her glory was concealed amidst her subjects. “If you came to have a good time, say, ‘I slay!’” she instructed. The cheering crowd was a dark sea dotted with iPhone lights.

Next, a recording of Brenda Lee cooing “I’m Sorry” played as an explosion of blue and red light flooded the stage. “You all know this song. Try and help me sing,” Mrs. Carter announced before standing solo for her less apologetic “Sorry.” Her dancers came out, middle fingers blazing. Starting out boldly, this is the song that features the “better call Becky with the good hair” line currently ringing in everyone’s ears and rolling off their tongues. The intensity escalated and found expression in a concentrated group dance to “Flawless.” The feeling was heightened by bursts of fire reaching high into the clear night above the stage, as the Major Lazer sample at the heart of “Run the World (Girls)” pumped through the speakers. The mood swayed between personal and jovial, like when Sean Paul’s distinctive growl came through on “Baby Boy.” Things stayed cool and tropical with a clip of the Sister Nancy’s dancehall opus “Bam Bam” that transitioned into “Hold Up” while Beyoncé and her girls bounced their bottoms to the delight of the masses.

The show continued smoothly with “7/11” and “Feeling Myself,” plus clips from O.T. Genasis’ “Cut It” and D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” “Drunk in Love” secured the rapture and participation of the crowd, with the lyrics after “surfboardt” being recited especially loudly. Bey had her Madonna BDSM “Human Nature” moment when she appeared in a wooden box wearing a red pleather bodysuit and sang her Fifty Shades of Gray version of “Crazy in Love” before a “Bootylicious”/“Naughty Girl” mashup that indicated the night was winding down. She even had an Annie Lennox moment, impressively covering the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).”

The whole time, Beyoncé smiled through her sweat. She glowed as she said a long goodbye, complete with salutes, laughter, and a childlike jump in the air. Something happened to Beyoncé between the release of “Formation” and Lemonade that softened her hardest edges, sweetened her mood. She seemed to have struck the balance between being “perfect” and being perfectly herself.

A massive, moving video cube was the backdrop for the stage, and it helped greatly in transforming a baseball stadium into an arena of magic. Much of the video shown came from Lemonade, so the show stuck close to Bey’s powerful visual themes and various symbolism surrounding black womanhood, accompanied during interludes by Warsan Shire’s spoken-word poetry that was adapted for Lemonade . One video showed the singer with a muzzle of diamonds and a razor emerging from her mouth, which she used to slice a bloodless cross on her giant tongue. The crowd cringed as Bey removed her priceless silencing device to ask, “Why can’t you see you’re the love of my life?” Damn.

There were a few more lighthearted moments within the visuals as well, including fan videos asking Bey “to just put out a new CD!”, home movies with Jay and Blue Ivy at play, and clips from Bey’s childhood performances.

The Costumes

Not one leg on that stage was covered, which was kind of amazing considering the style in which her dancers—nearly all black women—were dressed: They resembled gothic ice skaters in puffy, long-sleeved, and sequined bodysuits. Bey’s outfit changes—of which there were roughly six throughout the two-hour show—were varied but not all that more ostentatious than the looks her dancers sported: think bodysuits emblazoned with red and gold sequins in geometric shapes, a few more elegant looks.

The Stage Set-Up & Choreography

The brilliant set design had every single person in the stadium feeling like they were in the front row, by blowing up Beyoncé’s live image to the size of a building. Dancers were suspended and twirling from the ends of wires, with one writhing in a metal cube midair. Queen Bey had a Game of Thrones -style throne that rose from the guts of the stage. Plus, obviously, there were fireworks, pyrotechnics, and a buttload of confetti. The mostly synchronized choreography, however, was a little simpler. Elements of African dance and flapper moves were incorporated throughout.

The greatest design aspect was the catwalk, which snaked its way in an L-shape into the crowd on the field. Towards the end of the show, it turned out to have a conveyer belt on it, which moved the dancers smoothly into the audience before lowering into a pool of water, where the ladies danced to “Freedom.” The choreo’s tone was serious and powerful given the song’s strong Civil Rights message , but the way the dancers splashed as they marched and stomped was also playful—and just incredible to watch, visually.

Later, Beyoncé sat barefoot in this pool of water and dedicated the final song, “Halo,” to her family and her “beautiful husband.” She also thanked Prince for his “beautiful music,” and God for speaking through all of “his artists.”

The Fan Interaction

Beyoncé spent a bit of time alone on stage, making her way down the catwalk by herself as she reveled in the attention. She told a few stories. Earlier that day, Blue Ivy saw the stadium and asked her if she was going to work. This reminded Beyoncé of being a little girl and fantasizing about having a sold-out stadium tour. “I’m witnessing a dream come true tonight,” she said, truly touched. “I want to thank my Beyhive.” She basked in some low-key songs that showed off her chops, like “Me, Myself, and I,” saying, “Nobody is responsible for your happiness but you. And you always have yourself, so you are never alone.” As Bey is one to do live, she asked for a lot of “help” singing her songs, with some call-and-response on “All Night.”

For “Single Ladies,” Beyoncé brought up two crowd members. Of course these young women—one wearing an “unavailable” tee and the other sporting a white bodysuit and curly mohawk—knew all the choreography and performed with panache.

The Beyhive was dressed to impress but in an understated way suited for Miami’s spring weather. There were moms sporting Talbots, slender young boys in heels and mascara, tons of girls rocking bodysuits, and even more wearing shirts purchased at the relatively unimpressive merch table. It would have been better if the girl wearing her homemade “I was served lemons but made lemonade” jean jacket had been serving up her creation for sale. There were two exceptions to these surprisingly underwhelming merch offerings, however: a stylish tank with a line drawing of Bey flipping the bird (for a steep $45), and “Boycott Beyoncé” shirts, which referenced the proposed police boycott of the concert by the Miami Fraternal Order of Police. Despite the so-called anti-police message in Beyoncé’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, the boys in blue showed up for work and managed the packed stadium. The show was, in fact, not politically charged in the way her Super Bowl performance was.

There was a Prince tribute that involved the huge screen turning purple and “Purple Rain” playing over the speakers. It was more of an interlude than a proper tribute. During one of the two guitar solos, Beyoncé also shouted-out one of Prince’s earliest proteges, the woman-powered R&B trio Vanity 6, and rolled out a little of their biggest hit “Nasty Girl,” which she’s covered before .

Also, Bey’s former Destiny’s Child cohort Michelle Williams was in the house, though not on stage. This was Beyoncé’s solo victory lap, through and through.

Beyoncé Dedicates "Halo" to Jay Z and More Major Moments From Her Formation Tour

By Lauren Brown

Image may contain Human Person Stage Clothing Apparel Cat Osterman and Sleeve

Let's get real: This week belongs to Beyoncé . We haven't stopped discussing Lemonade since it debuted on HBO Saturday night. "Becky with the good hair" has been such a hotly-debated song lyric that Rachel Roy and Rita Ora both had to release statements to set the record straight that they're not the woman who allegedly cheated with Jay Z. And then last night, Queen Bey took her royal throne by kicking off her Formation world tour in Miami. She ruled even before she took the stage, posting this spine-tingling video:

Instagram content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

If Beyoncé has a super power, it's stage presence. She could just stand there for the whole show, and we'd be sitting up straight, ready to pay attention. With the tour rolling on through August (and hopefully you're a lucky one with tickets!), here's everything you need to know after last night's epic first show:

1. She owns her haters. Only Beyoncé could even dare to sell T-shirts at her concert that say "Boycott Beyoncé." After her "Formation" video and Super Bowl half time show featured strong #BlackLivesMatter themes, some non-fans claimed the singer is anti-police ( a stance she's since denied ). The Miami Fraternal Order of Police even threatened to boycott last night's concert and urged police at stops on the rest of the tour to do the same. Bey's merch is the equivalent of an eye roll to the drama:

PS: We need that "Slay All Day" shirt.

2. She literally performs on a throne. ...like we said, she is the Queen!

3. Prince was there in spirit. During a costume change, "Purple Rain" played as the crowd sang along. With a purple screen behind her, Beyoncé said, "Prince, thank you for your beautiful music. He's an artist that inspired all of us."

4. Blue Ivy gave her mom good vibes. Bey shared with the crowd, "We were driving to rehearsal today, and she said 'Mommy, are we going to your work?' And it reminded me that I dreamed of this day my whole life." Awwww !!!

5. She brought all the hits "Drunk in Love," Crazy in Love," and "Naughty Girl" all made the cut. And yes, "Sorry" was performed too—including a mention of "Becky." You can see the full set list here . And check out the dance moves of these lucky fans she brought up on stage during "Single Ladies":

6. Make no mistake, Jay Z is a proud husband. In case you were wondering, "Becky with the good hair" has not torn them apart. Ending the night with "Halo," Beyoncé said, "I want to dedicate this song to my beautiful husband. I love you so much." Jay Z was at the show—and showing his support at rehearsal during the day.

7. Beyoncé's an open book. That's why we love her so. She's sharing lots of behind-the-scenes shots from the tour like this beautiful shot with Blue Ivy:

Ok, I have a lot of free time today and I'm assuming she's not releasing an album before the tour (I'm probably wrong)...

18. Love on Top

PART 5 - "Love/sex". (love ballads and two upbeat-ish songs about sex, to end the show on a happy note)

Taylor Swift marks 100th show of Eras Tour: 'Feels truly deranged to say'

setlist formation tour

Taylor Swift is celebrating a major milestone as she nears the end of an era.

In an Instagram post on Sunday, the pop superstar reflected on playing the 100th show of her wildly popular Eras Tour , which occurred last week in Liverpool .

"We played our 100th show on The Eras Tour (which feels truly deranged to say because this show feels new to me every time we play it)," Swift wrote, sharing a gallery of on-stage photos and one backstage snap.

"I want say thank you to our Eras Tour crew, my fellow performers and band who have now committed hundreds of hours to putting on this show and giving their all on and behind that stage. I can't believe the work ethic, creativity and dedication I get to be surrounded with every day."

She continued by thanking the crowd at her three Liverpool shows for being "so expressive and generous and endlessly FUN," adding, "AND thank you to everyone who has come to any of the shows on The Eras Tour. It's been the adventure of a lifetime because of you."

While performing in Liverpool last week, the "Fortnight" singer confirmed the Eras Tour, the highest-grossing concert tour of all time and the first to gross $1 billion, will end in December. She acknowledged the impending conclusion of the tour during a speech before her song "All Too Well."

Taylor Swift mashes up 'Crazier' from 'Hannah Montana' with this 'Lover' song in Scotland

"This is the very first time I've ever acknowledged to myself and admitted that this tour is going to end in December," Swift told fans. "This tour has really become my entire life, it's taken over everything, like I think I once had hobbies. All I do when I'm not on stage is sit at home and try to think of clever acoustic song mashups and think about what you might want to hear."

She also acknowledged the 100th show milestone, saying this number "blows my mind" and "doesn't feel like a real statistic." Swift described the Eras Tour as the "most exhausting, all-encompassing, but most joyful, most rewarding, most wonderful thing that has ever happened in my life."

Taylor Swift to end record-breaking Eras Tour in December, singer announces

The Grammy-winner kicked off the Eras Tour in March 2023, and she's set to return to North America in the fall. The tour's final show is currently scheduled for Dec. 8 in Vancouver.

The filmed version of "The Eras Tour," which was released theatrically last year and later debuted on Disney+, is the highest-grossing concert film of all time. It has not yet been announced if an updated version of the movie will be released after Swift tweaked her concert setlist to incorporate songs from her latest album, " The Tortured Poets Department ."

Julien Baker rocks out in concert.

It doesn’t take a Boygenius to know that missing Julien Baker on tour would be a huge mistake.

Baker, 28, just announced her first true solo tour since her 2021-22 ‘Little Oblivions Tour.’

This time around, the indie folk/art rocker will pound the pavement at U.S., Canadian and British venues from September through November.

As of now, the “Appointments” singer doesn’t have a New York concert lined up but will headline at the inaugural NYC edition of the All Things Go Festival on Sept. 29 alongside big names like Chappell Roan , Reneé Rapp , MUNA ,  Janelle Monáe and Ethel Cain among others.

“Excited to be getting back on the road with the band,” Baker shared on Instagram . “These will be the only shows of 2024.”

If you want to see 33% of Boygenius live, tickets for all of Baker’s U.S. concert dates are available as soon as today.

Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming shows on sites like Vivid Seats; the official on-sale is Friday, June 21.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Julien Baker 2024 festival appearances

Although more recently Baker joined forced with Angel Olsen and Sharon Van Etten on a triple headliner tour, the last time she truly spread her wings as the main attraction was her ‘Little Oblivions Tour,’ as noted above.

For a closer look at what she performed at the final gig of that run back in 2022, you can find all the songs that made the set list that evening below.

01.) “Hardline” 02.) “Bloodshot” 03.) “Shadowboxing” 04.) “Favor” 05.) “Relative Fiction” 06.) “Highlight Reel” 07.) “Red Door” 08.) “Heatwave” 09.) “Ringside” 10.) “Sprained Ankle” 11.) “Something” 12.) “Song in E” 13.) “Faith Healer” 14.) “Tokyo” 15.) “Sour Breath” 16.) “Appointments” Encore

17.) “Everybody Does” 18.) “Ziptie”

Julien Baker new music

Most recently, Baker released the single “Empty Voices” with Thomas Powers.

Over four minutes, the pair create an eerie, trippy soundscape that wouldn’t sound out of place at an at gallery or hip indie eatery. And good luck trying to get Baker’s repeated refrain of “You leave me breathless” out of your head. It’s longing and affecting in the best way possible.

To hear the haunting track for yourself, you can find “Empty Voices” here .

Daily southtown | santana and counting crows reunite for tour, stopping in tinley park.

Lead vocalist Adam Duritz is a founding member of Counting Crows, which is part of Oneness Tour 2024. The package, which also includes Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Santana, makes a stop on June 29 outdoors at Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre in Tinley Park. (Mark Seliger)

Santana and Counting Crows: Oneness Tour 2024 makes a June 29 stop outdoors at Credit Union 1 Amphitheatre in Tinley Park.

“As a kid I was obsessed with Santana the band. I was a huge fan as a kid,” said Duritz, who grew up in California.

“There were a few venues in Berkeley where they would sell all the seats but the first two or three rows were general admission. I literally snuck out of the house as a mid-teenager and camped out to see Santana as a kid. I thought they were the greatest band.”

Years later Counting Crows opened for Santana, which guitarist Carlos Santana formed in 1966.

“When we went on tour with them, they were just as good,” said Duritz about warming up crowds for concerts in Germany, Switzerland and Austria in 2002 during the European leg of Santana’s All Is One Tour.

“They were so improvisational and amazing. I watched every show. I was obsessed.”

Duritz, who cited “A Long December” from 1996’s “Recovering the Satellites” as his favorite Counting Crows song to perform live, said there was no hesitation when the chance came to tour again with Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band Santana.

“As a fellow musician, I found the musicianship in that band completely intoxicating. It blew my mind so I just assumed other people feel the same way I do,” said Duritz, who has lived in New York for 21 years.

Co-founded in 1991 by Duritz and guitarist David Bryson, Counting Crows debuted with the 1993 album “August and Everything After,” which includes “Mr. Jones,” “Round Here” and “Rain King.”

Seven studio albums later, Counting Crows — which also includes Jim Bogios (drums), Charlie Gillingham (keyboards), David Immerglück (guitar), Millard Powers (bass) and Dan Vickrey(guitar) — is touring in support of “Butter Miracle, Suite One.”

“It’s really cool because it’s a suite of music. It’s four songs that all run together like one long song. It was a very challenging composition for me to write it like one long piece of music,” said Duritz about the 2021 EP, which will be expanded into a full album that Duritz said could be released in early 2025.

Counting Crows’ concert set is a mystery but could include “Accidentally in Love” from 2004’s “Shrek 2” soundtrack, the Joni Mitchell cover “Big Yellow Taxi” from 2002’s “Hard Candy” and/or “Hanginaround” from 1999’s “This Desert Life.”

“We make the set list up every night after dinner,” said Duritz, whose mother, Linda Duritz, a geriatric psychiatrist, graduated from Chicago Medical School in North Chicago.

“We’ve been playing for 30-plus years in the band now. It would be really easy to get bored. I don’t want to play songs I don’t want to play. The audience is there to get your full commitment and passion every night. The best way I know to do that is to play songs you’re dying to play.

“I want to be onstage completely involved every night.”

What Does George Strait's Record-Breaking Performance Say About Texas A&M's Immense Culture?

Matt guzman | 2 hours ago.

Oct 30, 2022; Nashville, TN, USA; George Strait performs during a "Coal Miner's Daughter: A Celebration of the Life & Music of Loretta Lynn" memorial concert at Grand Ole Opry House.

COLLEGE STATION, TX. — Standing backstage still wearing the button-up shirt on his back he promised to give away one lucky fan who won the online raffle, George Strait smiles and holds up a blue, crumpled-up sticky note.

"The King of Country Music," as he's come to be known, had just finished performing another show. Recently, he'd been touring with Little Big Town and Chris Stapleton at stadiums across the country, but none of them compared to the feat he'd just accomplished — marked by the number he was holding.

"110, 905" it read.

Kyle Field, with its listed capacity of 102,733, had just managed to fit that many people in for one night only — utilizing all of its available standing room and floor space — to watch Strait perform in Aggieland. Not only was it the only Texas show of his ongoing tour, but it was the first of its kind at Texas A&M.

Never before had an artist gotten the privilege of performing at such a large venue, and never before had an artist played in front of a ticketed crowd that large. Not until Strait came along, breaking the United States record held by Grateful Dead back when it packed 107,019 people into Raceway Park back in 1977.

Strait had made history. The Texas A&M Aggies had made history.

And there wasn't ever a doubt in anyone's mind that they would.

Rumors had been flying about the possibility of George Strait performing at Kyle Field well before its official announcement. Between him and a Mexico vs. Brazil soccer match that took place at the stadium during the annual MexTour, it was clear that Texas A&M knew what kind of space it had.

Yes, it was perfect for Saturday night football games. But what else could it do?

“All of us in athletics are trying to think about, how do we activate these spaces?" Texas A&M Athletic Director said of Kyle Field's new ventures. "You have to shift your mindset away from just doing athletic department events in a really iconic space.”

Soccer was one thing. More than 85,000 fans filled the stands at Kyle Field to watch a 3-2 match in favor of Brazil, and when it was over, they scattered, leaving Messina Touring Group and company with just a week to set up the largest concert in United States history.

Surely one man couldn't have that big of a draw, right?

Well, Strait didn't market as just "one man." To many, he was the best to ever strum the guitar and one of the purest voices in country music. They called him "The King" for a reason. That's why it made sense for tickets to his only Texas show of the year to go quickly — and expensively.

A birds-eye view of Kyle Field in College Station as part of the Texas A&M Aggies' new partnership with Cotton Holdings.

At most, tickets were going for thousands apiece. At the cheapest, they were just under $100 for the seats in the back row of the top deck, yet they all sold. Strait managed to demand a crowd large enough for Kyle Field to resort to standing room only on the concourse in addition to floor space.

And when his concert began, every one of those 110,905 fans were audible.

Before playing at Kyle Field, Strait had performed for a crowd of over 104,000 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington back in 2014 for his "Cowboy Rides Away" tour. In all likelihood, the fans in attendance that night didn't know he'd still be performing 10 years later, but that didn't take away from the draw.

Texas A&M had the facility to make the largest United States concert ever happen. Whether or not a venue in Waxahachie or Fort Worth the same size would have drawn the same crowd is a question that won't ever be answered, but it's an astounding yes regarding Kyle Field. There was no reasonable doubt that fans would show up for his performance in Aggieland.

Was it because of Strait's connection to the university through his son, Bubba? Was it because fans would be seeing Catie Offerman, Parker McCollum, and Strait? Something else?

While those factors certainly helped, the biggest reason for Aggies — among other country fans — showing up in such large capacity was because of the pride that came with it.

George Strait, "The King of Country Music," was performing in Texas for one night only, and he'd be in Kyle Field surrounded by Maroon.

The Aggies just had to be there.

Strait had been on tour prior to his performance in College Station. Many of the shows he was doing were with Chris Stapleton, as the pair went on a stadium roadshow to perform for crowds across the country. Those were uniquely a part of that tour.

One look at the venue the night of his show in Aggieland, however, revealed that this particular concert was a Texas A&M event.

Aggie logos were permanently fixed on the screen on either side of the live feed playing on the large video board above the South endzone, and on the two boards on adjacent sides of the North endzone was the phrase: "The King at Kyle Field."

Maroon shirts reading "Howdy" resemblant of the Aggies' annual "Maroon Out" shirts were sold at merchandise tables and any refillable drink cup was fixed with a logo to commemorate the one-night-only event. "Home of The 12th Man" was still proudly displayed above the typical student section that was now filled with country music fans, many of them Aggies embracing the country love that ran in their blood.

Everything about the event connected back to Texas A&M.

Right down to Strait's "Whoop" on stage in the first 15 minutes of his performance.

Strait performed 32 of his hits to a crowd proudly wearing light-up wristbands to make the experience even more immersive, starting with "Stars On the Water" and ending with "The Cowboy Rides Away."

He made the night of 110, 905 people by just singing, though that says more about him than anything else. What it says about the Aggies, however, is that they have an immense culture willing to latch onto anything that makes it proud. But that's been known.

Kyle Field has become almost a sacred place for Texas A&M faithful. It boasts one of the largest capacities for a sporting venue in the country, and the Aggies fill it on a regular basis.

They're already proud supporters of the team despite its struggles, but if a championship were to come to fruition? It'd reach another level. All of a sudden, almost every crowd would be a sellout and in a big-time matchup , Strait's record might see a threat.

The Aggies have been waiting for a long time to be in contention. George Strait's performance wasn't a championship — and I won't liken it to that — but the crowd it drew showed the Aggies' pride and passion. Their willingness to buy into something that is purely, unapologetically Texas A&M.

If Strait's crowd was a preview, or in some ways, a flex, of what the Aggies can do, then there's something to be said about the program's future.

It just has to get there.

Vampire Weekend celebrates Bay Area dads during special matinee concert

V ampire Weekend has become a millennial indie rock mainstay since its formation in 2006. But during a weekend in Berkeley, it was clear the band’s fan base has no generational limit.

Capping a two-day sold-out stint at the Greek Theatre at UC Berkeley on Sunday, June 16, fans of all ages basked in the Bay Area sun for a special daytime performance — the first of three Sunday matinee concerts on the band’s current tour in support of its fifth studio album “Only God Was Above Us.” (Other Sunday shows include one at KettleHouse Amphitheater in Bonner, Mont., on June 23, and at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Oct. 6).

For the trio led by guitarist/singer Ezra Koenig, who noted the night before was Vampire Weekend’s first time back at the Greek in about a decade, it was a fun-loving celebration that traversed the band’s nearly 20-year catalog. Those in the crowd, from the pit to the lawn at the back of the open-air amphitheater, sang, danced and air drummed along to the music. A few fathers even lifted their daughters up on their shoulders to lend them a better view.

“It’s Father’s Day, so I think it’s appropriate to make a statement about getting old,” said Koenig, who is a dad to 5-year-old son Isaiah, whom he had with actress Rashida Jones. “The first time we ever played ‘Oxford Comma’ in the Bay Area would have been 2007, and I see a whole bunch of kids here tonight, so safe to say there’s dozens of people who were not born the first time ‘Oxford Comma’ was performed in the Bay.”

Among them was 8-year-old Kade, who was attending his first concert with his father Emad Gholami.

“It was definitely one of my proudest moments as a father to see my kid just enjoying and absorbing what it’s like to be at a show and hear live music, because this experience is so different from listening at home or on Spotify,” Gholami said.

“Only God Was Above Us” has been on heavy rotation in Gholami’s car, the Danville resident said, so Kade was particularly excited to hear the new tracks live on Sunday.

“When they would come on he was like turning and exclaiming to people around him, ‘This is my favorite song!’” Gholami recalled, referring to “Classical,” “Ice Cream Piano” and “Capricorn.”

While all three Kade-approved tracks made it into both Berkeley performances, Vampire Weekend included a few sonic gems on Sunday setlist that were not heard the night before, including “Horchata,” “Flower Moon” and “Pravda.”

And while Saturday night’s encore consisted of various covers — from the Grateful Dead’s “Casey Jones” to Weezer’s “Buddy Holly” — Sunday’s encore leaned more country, folk and definitely more kid-friendly.

“Because it’s Father’s Day and we know that there’s some kids here, I tried to think, ‘What’s one of our simplest songs?’ ” Koenig said in introducing “We Belong Together,” off the band’s 2019 album, “Father of the Bride.”

About various things that do and do not go together (“pots and pans,” “lions and lambs”),  Koenig performed the playful tune with singer-songwriter Amber Coffman, formerly of Dirty Projectors, with the two singing in an almost children’s storytime sing-songy way.

But the guest appearances didn’t stop there. During the performance of honky tonk medley “Cocaine Cowboys,” Vampire Weekend brought up local fan, Hugo, and his two sons. The three played a round of “Gold Rush,” the band’s version of cornhole, which Koenig played onstage with socialite/singer Paris Hilton in April during Vampire Weekend’s surprise performance during the first weekend of this year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. At the end of the game, Koenig awarded Hugo and family a cash prize, playfully advising the children to invest their money in crypto.

Having heard about the concert a few weeks prior, Albany resident Nathalie Valette excitedly pitched the idea to her family of four for Father’s Day. Her 24-year-old son Jackson, a Vampire Weekend fan who recalled seeing the band at the 2013 Outside Lands music festival in Golden Gate Park, even made his way up from Los Angeles for the show in celebration of his dad, Bob. While the whole family loves music, Sunday marked the first concert they’ve attended together.

“How do we come together as a family when everyone is now their own adult having their own lives, living in different places?” Nathalie said of her two grown sons. “I think more music.”

Taylor Swift

It’s taken the UK’s great musical city of Liverpool to do it, but Taylor Swift was finally brought to tears by her fans on Saturday evening, as she performed her final concert there in front of a crowd of 60,000.

The singer had staged three shows at the Anfield stadium – more famous for its long association with Liverpool FC. The Daily Mail reports that Swift began looking “visibly emotional” while singing her 2020 hit Champagne Problems .

This moment came the same day as her ex-partner Joe Alwyn broke his silence on their long relationship being referenced in Swift’s most recent album The Tortured Poets Department .

The Saturday show saw Swift surprise the crowd with a fresh acoustic mash-up of her songs; this time it was Carolina and No Body No Crime , and also The Manuscript and Red .

The tour will continue in the UK with Swift heading to Cardiff on Tuesday before London later in the month.
