Watch The Porsche 911 Dakar & Safari Drive In Texas Wilderness

The new porsche 911 dakar adventures with its spiritual forebear..

The new Porsche 911 Dakar explores a new arena for production Porsche 911s: off-road performance. With its lifted suspension, off-road tires, and tweaks throughout, the 911 Dakar transforms one of the world’s most iconic sports cars into an all-rounder performance machine that delivers impressive driving characteristics, regardless of whether it’s on top of tarmac. However, it isn’t the first 911 with off-road capability, as it’s named after racing 911s that took on the legendary Dakar Rally. In between then and the release of the 911 Dakar, the aftermarket world has been responsible for many “Safari” Porsche 911s with their own off-road modifications.

On YouTube, the channel Kitted Company shows off both the new Porsche 911 Dakar and a Porsche 911 Safari in action, both embarking on an off-road adventure in Texas while being followed by a helicopter. As the cars drive through the wilderness, massive clouds of dust rise behind them as both show off off-road prowess which is especially impressive for a car like the Porsche 911. With limited visibility, features like roof-mounted lights come in handy, and the tires and suspension are especially appreciated in the muddy stretches and hills over which the 911 Dakar caught air for a brief moment. Unfortunately, the adventure ended with the 911 Dakar having a flat tire, but the escapade showed off both the historic off-road ability of the 911 with “Safari” mods, and the new off-road legacy that the 911 Dakar seeks to build.

If you haven’t heard of Kelly-Moss Road and Race (KMR), you’re missing out as the company builds some amazing, custom Porsche 911s, transforming them from ‘ordinary’ into off-road animals. Hoonigan Autofocus recently had the opportunity to check out some of the company’s latest creations.

While this clip doesn’t really feature any driving scenes of the 911 models that star in it, there are some astonishing pictures of the customized Porsches drifting around a frozen lake and being put to the test.

The white Porsche 911 featured, dubbed ‘ Safari TX’, was commissioned by an enthusiast in Texas who uses it as his daily driver and is equipped to tackle pretty much any type of terrain. Not only has its drivetrain been updated with a 3.4-liter engine featuring fuel injection, but the exterior features a host of new panels including rally-inspired driving lights on the hood, a prominent bash plate up front and benefits from an increased ride height and off-road-focused tires.

Inside, the car has been outfitted with a host of modern features including air conditioning, cruise control, and cooled seats, meaning it is more than capable of dealing with the Texan heat.

A handful of other cars from Kelly-Moss Road and Race are featured, and one of them is a modern Porsche 911 Turbo S that has actually been converted to a hybrid. The customization firm has slotted in a small electric motor where the flywheel would normally be while a small battery pack is now located up front. The addition of the electric motor and battery add 150 hp to the Turbo S while only adding 150 lbs (68 kg) of weight.

Porsche 911 Vision Safari

Year: 2012      Devolopment stage: Drivable prototype

“We believe that there is hardly any other car brand that can combine sports car and off-road characteristics as credibly as Porsche,” says Chief Designer Michael Mauer. In the 1970s, the Porsche 911 had already proved its astonishing off-road capabilities in the legendary East African Safari Rally. The race took competitors on a journey covering almost 5,000 km across the Kenyan wilderness. In 1978, Porsche works drivers Björn Waldegård and Vic Preston Jr. were right up in the leading group in their Porsche 911 SC Safari, which boasted increased ground clearance, all-round reinforcement and some pretty characteristic Martini stripes. They proved that the air-cooled 911 is almost as unstoppable in the desert as it is on a motorway or a race track. The images of these Porsche 911 Safari cars covered in the red dust of the African savannah, splashing through water holes and mud pools will never be forgotten.

And that is why the Porsche design team decided to pay tribute to the legendary off-road sports car with a contemporary re-interpretation in 2012. The Porsche 911 Vision Safari was created on the basis of the 991 generation of the 911. With its raised suspension, reinforced wheel housings, massive bumpers and a spartan rally cockpit with race seats and roll cage, it fully reflects its historic rally predecessor. The designers even planned a special shelf mounted above a fan behind the seats – to cool down your crash helmet between especially hot stages.

The Porsche 911 Vision Safari completed its maiden drive “Out of Africa” on the gravel track at the Weissach test facility, where normally the Porsche Cayenne and Macan prove their off-road capability. Chief Designer Michael Mauer was the co-driver in the Safari 911, with its uniquely soft suspension setup, when it performed its first drift and remembers enthusiastically: “I have rarely had so much fun before!”
