Bangladesh follows closely behind, with around 12.56 lakhs FTAs, constituting 20.29% of the total. The United Kingdom ranks third with 6.17 lakhs FTAs, making up 9.98% of the total.

Australia, Canada, and Sri Lanka also make significant contributions to FTAs to India, albeit to a lesser extent compared to the top three countries. Australia accounts for approximately 3.69 lakhs FTAs (5.96%), while Canada contributes around 2.77 lakhs FTAs (4.48%). Sri Lanka’s contribution stands at approximately 1.77 lakhs FTAs (2.87%).

It’s worth noting that while the United States and Bangladesh lead in terms of absolute numbers of FTAs, countries like Australia and the United Kingdom also hold substantial percentage shares. This indicates not only the importance of these countries in terms of visitor numbers but also their significance in terms of their share of the overall tourism market to India.

From 2011 to 2019, there’s a consistent upward trend in the number of domestic tourist visits, with year-over-year percentage changes ranging from single digits to over 25%. This period reflects a growing interest in domestic tourism, possibly driven by factors such as increased disposable income, improved infrastructure, and promotional efforts by tourism authorities.

In 2020, however, there’s a notable and unprecedented decline in domestic tourist visits, dropping to 610.22 million visits, a staggering 73.72% decrease from the previous year. This sharp decline can be attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant lockdowns and travel restrictions implemented across the country, severely impacting the tourism industry.

The rebound in 2021 is evident with a significant increase in domestic tourist visits to 677.63 million, representing an 11.05% growth over the previous year. This recovery can be attributed to the gradual easing of restrictions, pent-up demand for travel, and the adaptation of safety protocols by the tourism sector to encourage travel amid the ongoing pandemic.

In 2022, there’s a remarkable resurgence in domestic tourism, with the number of visits soaring to 1731.01 million, marking an astonishing 155.45% increase compared to 2021. This surge reflects a strong rebound in travel demand as the effects of the pandemic wane, coupled with increased vaccination rates, the resumption of economic activities, and renewed consumer confidence in travel.

Top 10 States in Number of Domestic Tourist Visitors

Uttar Pradesh emerges as the top destination for domestic tourism, with a staggering 317.91 million visits, representing a significant 18.37% share of the total domestic tourist visits. This suggests the state’s rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks such as the Taj Mahal, and vibrant festivals attract a large number of domestic travelers.

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh follow closely, with 218.58 million and 192.72 million visits respectively, accounting for 12.63% and 11.13% of the total domestic tourist visits. These states are known for their diverse attractions, including ancient temples, scenic beaches, and cultural experiences, contributing to their popularity among domestic tourists.

Karnataka and Gujarat also attract a considerable number of domestic tourists, with 182.41 million and 135.81 million visits respectively, capturing 10.54% and 7.85% of the total domestic tourist visits. These states offer a mix of heritage sites, wildlife sanctuaries, and modern amenities, catering to a wide range of interests among domestic travelers.

Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and West Bengal are also notable destinations, each receiving over 100 million domestic tourist visits. These states boast iconic landmarks, vibrant cities, and diverse cultural experiences, contributing significantly to the domestic tourism landscape.

Telangana and Uttarakhand, although receiving comparatively fewer visits, still contribute to the overall domestic tourism sector, attracting 60.75 million and 54.64 million visits respectively.

Number of Approved Hotels and Availability of Hotel Rooms in India 2014

One Star and Two Star hotels, although relatively few in number with 18 and 23 establishments respectively, collectively offer a substantial number of rooms, totaling 1,489. Despite their relatively lower number of establishments, they provide a substantial number of rooms, totaling 13,386 and 5,367 respectively.

Five Star Deluxe hotels, comprising 172 establishments, are synonymous with luxury and extravagance, offering premium accommodations and world-class amenities. With a staggering 39,212 rooms, they represent the epitome of opulence in the hospitality sector.

India’s outbound tourism expected to reach $44.7 billion by 2032 

India’s outbound tourism is expected to reach $44.7 billion by 2032, a recently released report produced in association with the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has revealed. Between June and August 2023, international leisure flight bookings from India have increased by 40 per cent in comparison with the same period the year before, the highest recorded level of outbound leisure flight bookings from India in the post-COVID-19 era.

Singapore has received the highest flight bookings from India, followed by San Francisco (USA), Melbourne (Australia), Toronto (Canada), and Bali (Indonesia). In the period considered, the USA, the UK and Canada were the most booked destinations. Bali and Singapore were the most popular choices in the Asian region.

India’s foreign exchange earnings from tourism during January- April this year were at $8.667 billion compared with  $3.115 billion in the same period in 2022, data from the Ministry of Tourism has revealed. For perspective, India earned a total of $25.6 billion in foreign exchange from tourism in 2019, an increase of 8.3 per cent.

In 2022, India generated Asia’s highest outbound travel volume, exceeding those of China, South Korea, and Japan. Moreover, foreign tourist arrivals in India stood at 31.3 lakh between January and April, up from 11.7 lakh arrivals in the year-ago period, as per the ministry. 

India saw about 21.9 per cent of foreign tourist arrivals from neighouring nation Bangladesh, followed by the USA, from where 16.3 per cent of total travelers came, another 10.3 per cent from the UK, five per cent from Canada, and 4.5 per cent from Australia.

Interestingly, Madurai, Bhubaneswar and Varanasi were the most searched domestic destinations for flights, while Auckland, Jeddah and Colombo came out as the most searched overseas destinations.  Travellers from India are also eyeing destinations such as Hong Kong and Tokyo in the Asian region, which reduce their flight budget by up to one-fourth.

Surge in international traffic The Ministry of Civil Aviation has reported an 88 per cent increase in the flow of international passengers during the first quarter of 2023, compared to the same period last year, indicating a robust recovery for the aviation sector. India has open sky arrangements with 23 countries, which has facilitated unlimited operations between India and these countries. Additionally, more than 1.23 crore people have travelled on Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik (Udan) flights. A total of 148 airports, nine heliports and two water aerodromes have also been developed and operationalised to offer improved connectivity across the country.

The number of Indians visiting the United States increased by 190 percent from 2021 to 2022, according to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Travel & Tourism Office (NTTO). According to NTTO statistics, a total of 1,256,915 Indians traveled to the United States, making India the 6th largest market for arrivals. The total value of U.S. tourism exports to India stood at $13.3 billion in 2022.

With the number of visitations to the United States increasing year-on-year, industry sources forecast that India will surpass its pre-Covid visitation levels to reach 1,556,000 travelers by 2024.

Current Trends in Travel:

India has witnessed a significant rise in outbound tourism to various international destinations, including the United States. With its rapidly growing younger and more educated population, combined with a burgeoning middle class and increasing amounts of disposable income, India is the second fastest growing outbound travel market in the world, second only to China.

One of the key features of India’s population is its young demographic composition, which will continue to drive outbound travel in the coming years. The 15-54 age group (47 percent of the total population) is the fastest growing age segment and is expected to represent 60 percent and 56 percent of the country’s total population by the year 2025 and 2050, respectively.

Student Travelers:

According to the Open Doors Report released in November 2022, nearly 200,000 Indian students chose the United States as their higher education destination in the 2021-22 academic year, a 19 percent increase over the previous year.   Of the over one million foreign students studying in the United States, one in five are Indian.

With an increasing number of students choosing the United States as their study destination, direct and indirect destination tourism in the form of student and family travel is a segment that is expected to see growth.

Repeat Travelers:

Among Indian travelers who currently have a U.S. visa, a high number are repeat travelers to the United States, and second- and third-time travelers demand new destinations and experiences.  Interest in niche tourism sectors such as medical, wellness, or adventure tourism is growing.  According to the U.S. Travel Association’s 2019 report, top activities that Indian visitors to the United States seek include shopping, sightseeing, national parks, art galleries/museums, fine dining, small towns, and historical locations while adventure, visiting friends and family, shopping, food and cuisine, and connecting with nature were the top incentivizing factors for Indians to visit the United States.  These interests align well with off-the-beaten path locations and activities in the United States that will appeal to the repeat traveler who has already seen the more well-known destinations (e.g., New York City, California, Hawaii, Washington DC, etc.).

Niche and Luxury Travelers:

One of the key segments being targeted by destinations and tourism stakeholders as they look at India for revival of tourism is luxury travel. In 2021, pleasure travelers accounted for nearly 52 percent of total Indian travelers to the United States, which is higher than the category of student travel. Many of these travelers are high-net-worth individuals (HNIs) whose preference appears to be wellness resorts and villa staycations in the most stunning and exclusive locations.  Data shows that the average Indian visitor to the United States spends $5,200, among the highest of all international visitors.

MICE Travelers:

India is poised to be the world’s fastest growing outbound MICE tourism market, expected to exceed $45 billion by 2025. It is the largest source market for Dubai and Singapore. The United States is one of the most aspirational destinations for MICE travelers who have the potential to become major spenders.

Opportunities and Way Forward:

The U.S. Travel and Tourism industry offers a number of opportunities to Indian travelers in terms of diverse tourist offerings: i.e., tourism to iconic landmarks, vibrant cities, natural wonders, cultural experiences, educational exchanges, as well as advanced healthcare facilities that attract medical and wellness tourism.

While there are currently long wait times for obtaining a first time B1/B2 visa, the U.S. Embassy and Consulates have taken several steps to streamline the visa application process and reduce wait times for Indian travelers. Initiatives such as the interview waiver program and the global entry program have been implemented to facilitate smoother travel for eligible individuals.  In addition, there are currently over 3 million Indians who have a valid 10-year U.S. visa and constitute a major share of repeat travelers.

In 2021, the National Crime Records Bureau recorded 446 crime incidents for every 100,000 people, so can you stay safe while touring the country? Yes, if you start by looking out for these red flags;

Tampered Taxi Meter -  the phrase “Sorry sir/madam, my meter is broken” followed by a hiked taxi price is common. To avoid this, agree on a price beforehand, travel with a guide, or use set prices from apps like Uber.  If your taxi doesn’t have a meter, don’t even bother getting in.

Pickpockets and Public Transport - It's unavoidable. So stay as vigilant as possible and keep your things close when on public buses and trains. The stations are where pickpocketing antics run wild.

Train Ticket Valet - After you purchase a train ticket, anyone asking you to pay for "stamped validation is a scammer". There's no such thing. Keep your ticket to yourself and only show it to the train's conductor after paying.

India's Mahindra Holidays Q4 profit jumps on higher occupancy, membership growth

A surge in tourism has enabled hospitality companies, including Mahindra Holidays, to rebound strongly after COVID-19.

Mahindra Holidays is known for its premier resorts brand 'Club Mahindra' and has 110 resorts in India and overseas. Its unit in Europe has 33 vacation properties across Finland, Sweden and Spain.

The company reported a consolidated net profit of 823.6 million rupees ($9.88 million) for the quarter ending March 31, against 564.2 million rupees a year ago.

Its revenue rose nearly 13% to 8 billion rupees, while total expenses rose 9.5%.

During the fourth quarter, resort occupancies reached 87.3%, up from 85% the previous year, while the value of membership sales increased 18% year-on-year.

The company expanded its portfolio with resorts in domestic locations like Sikkim and Assam, and international ones such as Turkey, Kenya, Thailand and Georgia.

The company reported an 18% rise in its quarterly upgrades, reflecting customers' decisions to upgrade their memberships, to 660 million rupees.

Shares of Mahindra Holidays rose 1.5% on Friday ahead of the results.
