Amsterdam Experiences

Rijksmuseum - The Netherlands National Museum Private Tour

A private tour of the rijksmuseum, the netherlands national museum.

Always wanted to see the famous work of the Dutch Masters; Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Frans Hals? In this Private Rijksmuseum Tour, your guide provides a personal experience of the Netherlands most visited art museum. Exploring 800 years of Dutch history through art and artefacts.

Discover Rembrandt’s Nightwatch

With a deep knowledge of the displayed art, the guide explains the stories behind the artists and their work in fluent English. Of course, what would a visit to the Rijksmuseum be without getting eye-to-eye with Rembrandt’s masterpiece – De Nachtwacht? Don’t worry, we will teach you how to pronounce it correctly!

Get up close to Vermeer’s Milkmaid and his Little Street

The Gallery of Honour welcomes back The Milkmaid, Woman Reading a Letter, The Love Letter and Little Street. If you missed the sell out Vermeer exhibition this spring, this is your chance to see some of the Master of Light’s finest work.

History of Holland

More than just a tour of Dutch masterpieces, in this tour you will learn more about how the art fits into the historical context of the Netherlands. Your guide takes you through the museum to provide the stories behind the paintings that go much deeper than the descriptions on the wall.

You’ll hear quirky stories about the artists, fun facts about their work, and how their work contributed to the Dutch cultural heritage. We will see the inside of a typical 17th century house, the beautiful library, famous white and blue pottery pieces, and even what naval battles looked like.

Rijksmuseum Private Tours Rembrandt and Vermeer

Edgar was exceptional in navigating us through the museum in 90 minutes, hitting both the highlights in detail (his knowledge of Rembrandt was remarkable) as well as some hidden gems (both inside and outside the building). He had marvelous anecdotes and a keen sense of humor. It was a very memorable visit.

private tour rijksmuseum

The Building of the Rijksmuseum

Not only the paintings will be discussed, but also the impressive, renovated building itself gets a mention. After years of renovation, the Rijksmuseum reopened in 2013 – a work of art in itself. In true Amsterdam style, cyclists can bike underneath the gates at the entrance. If you are lucky, you will also hear a free classical concert as you enter the building.

This tour is available on two levels:

**Highlights of the Museum**  – Do you just want to visit the Rijksmuseum in a fun and light way? Experience the most famous paintings without too many facts or technical jargon with our Highlights of the Museum tour.

**The Rijksmuseum In-Depth**  – Do you want to explore the art and museum in an in-depth way, hearing more about the history and techniques used to create some of the finest Dutch masterpieces and antiques?

Please let us know which version of the tour you would prefer to have when booking and we will arrange a tour to suit your request.

We also have a nice guided tour of the Van Gogh museum and if you are a real art lover we can combine both.

Included in the tour: – Tickets to the Rijksmuseum – Your Personal Private Tour Guide

Not included in the tour: – Souvenirs – Lunch

The best of the Rijksmuseum

Guided tour.

Crisscross the museum together with a tour guide in search of the best of the best, from the Night Watch and The Jewish Bride to Asian temple guards and Breitner. Discover the most talked about and, according to others, tasteful works of art... and add your own finale.

But who decides what you should see? We think you should! That’s why the tour guide highlights not only well-known masterpieces, but also takes your own choice into account. We’re curious to know what it will be!

A great guide with a good story, responding to questions from us, not a standard smooth story, so: very satisfied !!

Good to know.

  • This guided tour is in English
  • Cancellation after payment is no longer possible. Refund is only possible if the museum has to cancel the program due to government measures.
  • Rescheduling the date is possible, subject to availability, up to 1 week before the visit date (please note that this does not apply to private tours).
  • A booking for a guided tour alone does not give access to the museum. You need entrance tickets for that. In the case of a regular tour, these are automatically included when you book your spot in a tour. In the case of a private tour, you have to book these separately after you have booked the private tour

The Night Watch: visibility temporarily reduced

Operation Night Watch offers a unique opportunity for visitors to follow the restoration of Rembrandt’s masterpiece live at the Rijksmuseum. We are currently studying the effects of vibrations on the canvas and how we can minimise any chance of movement in the canvas. These activities are temporarily reducing the visibility of The Night Watch. This work is an essential step in the restoration process, and we are unfortunately unable to avoid reducing visibility of the painting . This phase of the research project will continue until mid-September.

The Rijksmuseum is by far the largest museum in The Netherlands. Its collection is a must see for every art-lover who visits Amsterdam. It is also the best place to follow the rise, fall and legacy of the Dutch Republic in the 17th century. On our private tour in the Rijksmuseum you will get acquainted with the key moments in Dutch history as well as its most important artworks. Immerse yourself into Dutch history and art with one of our private art historians.

The historical collection

In the Rijksmuseum we offer a crash course on the history of the Dutch Republic in the 1600s. See how the mercantile society of the Lowlands took up arms to strive for independence. How this young republic became one of the world’s most influential powerhouses. Meet the key players of the Golden Age, people such as: Prince William of Orange, Admiral Michiel de Ruyter and leading intellectual Johan de Witt.

A Golden Age of art

Get the stories behind Johannes Vermeer’s quiet Milkmaid, Jan Steen’s messy (and quite hilarious) households, Albert Cuyp’s lush landscapes, Rembrandt’s mysterious portraits and Frans Hals’ civic guards. What makes the art from the Dutch Golden Age so particular, so different from other places and eras? The Rijksmuseum is by far the best museum to talk about the Dutch Masters of the Golden Age.

Van Gogh and the Dutch Impressionists

The Rijksmuseum has a strong accent on 17th century art. The late 19th century however, formed a ‘Second Golden Age’. Artists like Vincent van Gogh, George Breitner and Anton Mauve ushered in  a whole new era of art. What was their connection with the Dutch Golden Age and the French Impressionists?

Rijksmuseum secrets

‘ The Rijks’ is more than a museum. It’s an institute for art and culture. During your Rijksmuseum tour you will learn more about its many other functions and the eventful history of the building itself. Architect Pierre Cuypers created a completely unique cathedral for Dutch art that has been as revered as it has been despised, since the moment it opened its doors in 1885. We will reveal many of the secrets of this enthralling museum during this private tour.

Excellent day seeing wonderful sites in Buenos Aires. John is a very informative guide and pleasant to spend time with.

The Guided Tour of the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum was exceptional. Our guide Tia was very knowledgeable and gave us a deep understanding of the history, context and meaning of all the paintings we viewed. We can highly recommend this tour.

Excellent experience with Victoria, our guide. Made visit interesting as well as educational.

As is true of many wonderful museums, there is so much to see it is difficult to focus. Our guide for our family of 5 adults was Victoria. She was both a masterful story teller about the lives of Van Gogh and Rembrandt and an expert in defining their styles of painting and comparing them to other painters of their time. We did not see EVERY painting but rather a series that depicted the growth and the challenges these artists had in their creative, often challenging lives. You would want this experience for this tour! This was a 4-5 hour tour and we were intrigued the entire time.

We booked a combo tour of Rijksmuseum and the Van Gough with Babylon Tours. Their tour guide Victoria was wonderful. She had a passion for art and was very knowledgeable about the Dutch masters and Vincent. She had a great personality and made the tours fun, too.

Amsterdam-Guided tour of Rijksmuseum & VanGogh Museum; excellent guide who was very knowledgeable and excellent communicator--made the tour more valuable and informative

That was my second visit to Van Gogh museum and the first to Rijksmuseum. Both were excellent. First time I visited Van Gogh museum 3-4 years ago on my own without a guide and thought I read a lot about his life and works the tour was interesting but not complete. A tour with Victoria is a remarkable event! She not only knows "the subject" but likes it a lot and her passion pushes the limits and makes you appreciate Van Gogh as never before. Rijksmuseum is of course an absolute must to visit. I am sure I do visit both museums on my next visit to Amsterdam should it happen.

Excellent Tour led by Victoria. She was extremely knowledgeable. I now have a different thought process on viewing and appreciating art.

We had the extreme pleasure of having a private tour of the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum by Cea, who was an amazingly knowledgeable and personable tour guide. We at first thought it was a pricey luxury, but found it to be well worth EVERY EURO!! Many thanks for providing us with such a special day! We highly recommend this tour to anyone - it was a five star event!! June and Jerry

Guided Tour of the Two Museums

Van Gogh Museum

We tell you about the controversial life of the author through the contemplation of his work.

Did you know that almost all his production, more than 900 paintings, is concentrated practically in the last 3 years of his life? What would it be that dragged the eccentric artist to this prolific production?

Our tour is about this obsession. We are doing it step by step, observing how he is progressing in his technique and who influenced his different stages. A tour full of curiosities and full of stories about the life and work of this genius.

Rijksmuseum

After resting a little, we continue our visit to the Rijksmuseum, the most important museum in the country and also the largest.

To make the most of our time, we will first visit the classical room, where we will talk about the most important painters of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Willem Claeszoon Heda, Jan Vermeer or Jan Steen.

With a realistic character, the intimate genre scenes reach all their splendor with these artists. Our task will be to analyze the distinctive value of each artist, the personal and technical contributions used while telling you the story behind each painting.

The visit will continue through other rooms, where we will continue discovering hidden treasures.
