Mercedes Factory and Museum in Stuttgart, Germany

As part of our 8-day/7-night Auto Factory Tour of Germany, you will experience the fascinating world of the Mercedes-Benz automobile. The 2-hour guided walking tour of the largest Mercedes-Benz plant in the world gives a detailed insight into the fascinating world of automobile production. The tour begins in the press shop, where the body parts are given their shape, continues with the ballet performance of the robots in the body shop, and ends in the assembly shop, where the bodyshell and powertrain are married together. In the logistics 'supermarket,' you can see how vehicle components are fed to the assembly lines, in part by two driverless transport systems named 'Bertha' and 'Gottlieb'.

At the museum, with a one-hour guided tour, you will experience the 125-year history with over 160 vehicle exhibits and numerous special exhibition pieces. Gain an overview of the history of the Mercedes with a chronological tour through the Legend halls that takes you on a journey through time, from the dawn of automotive history in 1886 right through to the present day. In addition, you will also travel through a series of theme-based collections spanning various eras, housed in five different Collection halls.

After the guided factory tour, you will have free time to walk through the museum at your own pace.

Mercedes-Benz Factory Plant Tour - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Visit the Mercedes-Benz Automobile Museum in Stuttgart, Germany

Visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim in Germany to see exhibitions of historic vehicles, vintage automobiles, racing cars, engines, and motor technology developed by the oldest car brand in the world.

1950s Mercedes-Benz Cars seen on a visit to the Mercedes-Benz Museum at the factory in Stuttgart, Germany

The huge Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart displays many of the most desirable cars ever produced in Germany. Mercedes-Benz has a history of around 140 years and enough historic and vintage automobiles to fill the massive factory museum in Untertürkheim, where Mercedes-Benz has traditionally produced its luxury vehicles. The large museum has a wealth of cars and vehicle-related technology on display but is very easy to enjoy even by visitors with less enthusiasm for automobiles. The Mercedes-Benz Museum is a great family destination too.

Visit the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany

Silver Arrows Race Cars seen on a visit to the Mercedes-Benz Museum at the factory in Stuttgart, Germany

The enormous, ultramodern Mercedes-Benz Museum opened in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim in 2006 to display the huge collection of historic vehicles owned by the world’s oldest automobile manufacturer. In addition to cars, the museum also displays trucks, buses, experimental vehicles, technology, and racing cars built by Mercedes-Benz. Around 200 vehicles are on display at any given time – some are even parked in the underground public garage.

The Mercedes-Benz Museum is spread over eight floors with visitors usually taking an elevator up to the eighth floor to start the tour of the museum. Although the elevator ride is only 34 m, visitors spend at least 1.5 km walking down. Car enthusiasts may easily cover 5 km on foot while enjoying the entire collection.

Famous Cars in the Mercedes-Benz Museum

The First Mercedes seen on a visit to the Mercedes-Benz Museum at the factory in Stuttgart, Germany

The collection of the Mercedes-Benz Museum is grouped into two main exhibitions: the Legend Tour (Mythosrundgang) and Collection Tour (Collectionsrundgang). Further temporary and side displays enhance the museum visit. Visitors follow a mostly circular walkway down several floors to see the cars and can easily integrate the display halls of both main tours on the way down.

The Legend Tour explains the history of Mercedes-Benz mostly chronologically, starting with a copy of Carl Benz’s first 1886 Patentwagen (the original is in the Deutsches Museum in Munich) and the engines that made Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler famous. The exhibition covers the main streams in the development of Mercedes-Benz from the invention of the automobile to the cars of the future.

Mercedes-Benz 300 Series cars seen on a visit to the Mercedes-Benz Museum at the factory in Stuttgart, Germany

The Collection Tour consists of five thematic exhibitions where similar vehicles from different periods are displayed together to show the development and changes of cars and other motorized vehicles. It is for example possible to see tour buses and trucks from different periods grouped together.

Special exhibitions mean that there is always something new to see in the museum and no guarantee that some of the cars of famous former owners are on display, such as the Mercedes cars owned by Kaiser Wilhelm II (770 Grosser Mercedes), Emperor Hirohito (770), Princess Diana (500SL), and Pope John Paul II (Popemobile 230G).

The last exhibition hall is of the silver arrows racing cars and cars used for speed records set by Mercedes-Benz. Design studies may also be seen outside the museum itself in the basement and parking garage.

Some large Mercedes-Benz cars with unsavory 1930s and 1940s history are not shown in the Mercedes-Benz museum but are often on display in the privately run Technology Museum in Sinsheim — a museum where it is easy to spend the whole day.

Opening Hours and Tickets for the Mercedes-Benz Museum

The Mercedes-Benz Museum has a wealth of information on Mercedes-Benz and the development of cars in general. It is a great destination for motoring enthusiasts but most visitors will find the museum easy to enjoy.

The museum is also a great destination for families with children. Several technology displays are interactive and a few well-marked vehicles may be entered.

The museum is fully adapted for wheelchair users and families with strollers will enjoy the easy access ramps as well.

Getting to the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany

Design Study in the Mercedes Benz Museum Parking Garage

The Mercedes-Benz Museum is to the east of Stuttgart in the suburb Untertürkheim. Drivers should follow the signs to the Museum car park – bear in mind that almost everything in this area has Mercedes-Benz somewhere in the name. Even if not driving, peak into the parking garage as some special cars are on display in glass cases.

Drivers of vintage cars – not necessarily bearing a three-pointed star – may often park for free at the entrance to the museum.

Juan Manuel Fangio Statue in Stuttgart

Public transportation to the Mercedes-Benz Museum is also easy. The closest S-Bahn station is Neckar Park (Mercedes-Benz), a short walk from the museum. S-Bahn train S1 from Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof (main train station) stops here. Follow the signs to the Mercedes-Benz Museum — often smaller than those pointing to the Mercedes-Benz Arena, which is nearby but with different walking paths.

An alternative is to use the train to Bad Cannstatt station (S-Bahn S1, S2, S3, regional trains) and continue by bus 56 to Mercedes-Benz Welt – the bus stops right in front of the museum entrance. Boats on the Neckar River use the pier Mercedes-Benz Welt / Neckar Park.

Stuttgart is an interesting city to visit with many cultural and historical sights worth exploring. However, it is most famous for its car industry with the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Sindelfingen also very popular with visitors. Shoppers may enjoy cheap deals at the Hugo Boss factory outlet malls in nearby Metzingen – most trains to Metzingen even stop en route in Bad Cannstatt.

Best Car and Automobile Museums in Germany

1950s Mercedes-Benz Cars seen on a visit to the Mercedes-Benz Museum at the factory in Stuttgart, Germany

Germany has many car museums with some of the best collections on display at the factory museums of major manufacturers. Two are in Stuttgart: the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and the large Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim. The BMW Museum in Munich is adjacent to the Olympiagelände where the ill-fated 1972 Games were staged. The Autostadt in Wolfsburg is a very popular destination but far fewer visitors look in at the nearby Volkswagen Museum covering only the VW brand.

Hitler's Armor-Plated Parade Cabriolet

Major museums in Germany with significant car collections include the Verkehrsmuseum section of the German Museum in Munich (including the first Benz Patentwagen car produced), the German technology museum in Berlin , and the technology museum in Sinsheim . The latter also has many military vehicles as do the Museum of Military History in Dresden and the German Tank Museum in Munster near Hamburg.

Visiting Stuttgart ...Need ADVICE on factory tours..actvities

  • Add to quote

Hi all, I am going to Germany, (Stuttgart) and would love to go to the factory tour in Sindelfingen. I am going to the museum too. I have read online at the MB site about the Sindelfingen factory and it really doesn't tell how to schedule unless you are with a large group. I know the dates are depending on production, and schedules. Does anyone know how to schedule a tour? Has anyone been to the Mercedes museum/and or factory? I did write to the email listed on the site but haven't gotten a response. Any help would be so appreciated! My car was made there and I would love to visit. Thanks Robin

mercedes benz factory tour stuttgart

Did you email to the address below? For a smaller group you could make the reservation by phone but I don't see why it would not work via email. If you have time at the museum, take part to the Untertürkheim engine factory tour. I think they have one in German and one in English per day. How soon is your trip? Telefon: 07031 90-70403 Fax: 07031 90-2679 E-Mail: [email protected]

At Sindelfingen there is a "customer center" where you can do some shopping. There's a Maybach sales area. I think someone nearby can help you order an armoured Mercedes, too. There's the S-class production line. Probably E-class somewhere nearby, too. No roadsters IIRC. No engines. Best way to do this if from the USA is ... Mercedes-Benz Club of America - German Trips And, don't forget the Classic Center. http://www.mercedes-benz-classic.co...mpc_home/mbc/home/classic/classic_center.html

Hi MB124, Stuttgart city is the main place, and has the museum and engine plant(s). There are regular tours, although you should check to see that your time is in English. Sindelfingen factory is a car assembly plant, with separate buildings for the different models eg S, E, C, etc. It is a satellite suburb and not easy to get to (time consuming by public transport). You should try and pre-book your (English) tour before you travel. I spent an interesting afternoon tour of the Untertürkheim engine factory, tour guide guide was a retired German engineer, and just as I thought he was finishing his comprehensive explanation in each section, he would say "UND, der machin....." and continue for another long peroration. No photographs allowed, of course :-( I hope you have a safe and enjoyable trip regards David

Hi. I heard back from Sindelfingen and they regreted to inform me that they weren't giving tours through the end if May to the public. But......good news followed when I read my email further. Since I have a new Benz that was made there they are going to place us with the others that are picking up their cars through the European Delivery Program! Tour is free of charge! Oh my how thrilled I am to get to go! Thanks for the advice everyone! Robin

Mercedes-Benz Cars increases flexibility and efficiency in operations

"Factory 56".

In the factory of the future we are consistently implementing innovative technologies and processes across the board according to the key terms 'digital, flexible, green'. We create a modern workspace with more attention to individual requirements of our employees. In "Factory 56" in Sindelfingen, Germany, we are significantly increasing flexibility and efficiency in comparison to our current vehicle assembly halls - without sacrificing our quality.

New, flexible infrastructure with powerful WiFi and mobile network

In the "Factory 56", the traditional assembly line is replaced by driverless transport systems in selected production areas - the so-called "TecLines" - for example at the beginning of the trim line. By merely redefining the tracks for the driverless transport systems, it will be possible to change from assembly operation to cycle operation, whereby the vehicle remains in position and is not continuously moved along the line. This makes sense for automated activities, among others, for example when installing the sliding glass roof. In addition, by using the driverless transport systems, individual assembly units can be expanded without interfering in the building's structure.

Combining an assembly line with "TecLines" allows high-efficiency assembly for large-scale production and increases flexibility so that production can be adjusted without any great effort or interruptions to current operation.

In doing so, machines and systems are networked with one another. Selected assembly facilities and materials handling technology are "Internet of Things"-ready. A high-performance and efficient wireless network and mobile network form the basis for this. The use of a powerful 5G-mobile phone technology is to be tested for the first time in assembly in a pilot application. The assembly hall is completely paperless. Employees work with monitors and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). Shopping carts are being used across the board in "Factory 56" to supply the assembly stations. These are equipped with the required materials for assembly in a so-called pick zone using intelligent picking systems. In total 300 driverless transport systems are in use. Resulting data can be collected and evaluated using big data technology. The findings are utilized to improve existing production processes, thus avoiding plant malfunctions with predictive maintenance. This helps to increase business operating times and improve quality.

mercedes benz factory tour stuttgart

360-degree networking – from the supplier to the customer

However, networking not only happens inside the factory. A significant feature of "Factory 56" is the all-round networking across the entire value-added chain – from development and design to suppliers, production and customers. In coordination with our suppliers, we use the benefits of tracking and tracing, for example, which allows load carriers to be traced digitally around the world. Tracking and tracing enables early detection of discrepancies in the supply chain and thus a quicker reaction time.

We are already connected with our customers today: Under "Digital Anticipation" in the Mercedes me app, customers purchasing new vehicles can gain exclusive insights into the production of their vehicles. For research and development as well as production, 360-degree networking means quick and transparent communication across all units. Digital tools are used for development and production, for example, production processes are visualised and optimized by "Virtual Reality" (VR) before a real production hall comes into existence. For example, the workstations and processes can be virtually tested and designed ergonomically.

Work of the future – focus on people

Despite state-of-the-art technology and innovative Industry 4.0, in "Factory 56" the focus is as always on people. For Mercedes-Benz, the employees' expertise, flexibility and high level of motivation are the key to success, and that applies to periods of transformation and digitalisation. This is why Mercedes-Benz is cutting back on the level of automation in "Factory 56". To sustainably shape the production of the future, an innovative working organization and new working time models will be developed along with the works council. The aim is to reconcile the company's requirements with the employees' requirements via sustainable and practical solutions: While the company wants to increase flexibility, capacity and extend the operating hours, employees are often concerned with gaining more freedom for personal matters with flexible working times and places that can be arranged at short notice. In this context, a model for flexible teams, the so-called Pool of Shift Employees, is currently being tested. This means that an employee's wishes regarding his/her shift plan depending on his/her personal situation can be better taken into consideration, thus promoting a balance between family and professional life. It is conceivable that one-day employees will be able to choose their working hours via an app.

mercedes benz factory tour stuttgart

"Green production" – CO₂-neutral electricity supply

All German Mercedes-Benz Cars plants will have a CO₂-neutral energy supply by 2022. New plants worldwide are already planned with this premise. "Factory 56" will already have a CO₂-neutral energy supply upon commissioning. There is a photovoltaic system (PV system) on the factory's roof, which feeds self-generated green electricity into the hall's supply. In addition, there are a number of measures for reducing energy consumption. Approximately 40 percent of the roof's surface will be extensively planted. Apart from offsetting impervious surfaces and aiding rainwater retention, this also translates into an improved interior climate in the hall. The hall is particularly translucent. The Blue-Sky architecture supports a pleasant working climate for the employees using daylight. "Factory 56" in Sindelfingen is the blueprint for all future vehicle assembly halls of Mercedes-Benz around the world – this applies to existing plants as well as new locations.

KeyFacts about the "Factory 56"

Right from the start, Mercedes-Benz manager Ulrike Graze is responsible for "Factory 56" at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Sindelfingen, about 20 Kilometres away from the Daimler headquarter in Stuttgart, Germany. Additionally Mrs. Graze is in charge of the S-Class assembly in Sindelfingen. The area of "Factory 56" measures 220,000 m2. This equates to about 30 soccer fields. While the cornerstone ceremony for the new assembly hall took place on February 20, 2018, the start of production is scheduled at the beginning of the next decade. Upper and Luxury class cars with combustion engines, hybrid drives and purely electric-battery drives as well as self-driving cars will be produced there. This includes, among others, the new generation of the S-Class as well as the first electric vehicle from the EQ product and technology brand "made in Sindelfingen".
