Overcharged and Poor Service!

I booked a flight through lol.travel and was shown a price of €293.20. But, I was charged €313.73 instead. This overcharge is NOT okay. I did not get any warning of price change. Also checking the price now on their website - it still shows €293.20 (so price for the flight has not been changed). I contacted their customer service with proof, but they have been slow and unhelpful. This mistake and poor service have made me lose trust in lol.travel. If you use lol.travel, double-check all charges. I hope they fix this issue and improve their service.

Surprisingly good

Surprisingly, one of the good online travel agencies! They've replied very fast to my mails, I got my money back in record-time for a cancelled flight... I usually try to not use OTAs, but here I don't have any reluctance & could recommend them. What I did not like: somehow, the language for one of my bookings was Italian. Don't know if I screwed up or something on their side. And the hotel selection is not that broad, but was sufficient after all.

LOL - this is the right name for this lot

LOL - correct name for this booking site. Literally changed the total fee from EU1152 to EU1265 whilst I was busy putting my credit card details. Never ever ever ever ever again

Good service and prompt refund

I made a booking for an eight night stay at at a hotel in Alanya, Turkey with lol.travel.The price was hundreds of pounds cheaper than their closest competitor. Due to my becoming unwell I had to cancel ahead of leaving England. I had a partial refund per the booking terms and had great support from the customer service department. I had also checked with the hotel that my booking was valid. I would happily book again with lol ....and, hopefully, be able to avail of said booking.

This is a SCAM or something

This is a SCAM or something. We booked 2 tickets more than a moth ago and they still haven't arrived. Where are they? reservation for a flight

On April 6, I made a reservation for a flight, which was very expensive. However, to this day, I have not received my ticket or any update on the status of my reservation. Hidden cost

It offered the cheapest price at Skyscanner. However, when I was booking the tickets and about to pay, there was a sudden 260 euros increase in the price as "management fees". I then aborted the purchase. I hate hidden costs.

Administration fees in the last step of booking appear!

I booked a plane ticket with them through scyscanner. They offered the best price. Second best price was 30€ costlier then lol.travel At the very last step of booking confirmation an additional administration fee of 60€ was revealed. So in the end I payed 30€ more then I would have if I chose the second best price which was with kiwi. I do not appreciate hidden fees on the last step when you already put in all your private information ect.

Avoid such blurry travel agents

Avoid such blurry travel agents. I booked through them. My travel schedule is adjusted 2 days before departure due to insufficient transfer time. While an acquaintance of ours was on the same flight to our final destination on a later flight, so with a short transfer time. Whether I want to transfer 55EURO, otherwise my booking will not be confirmed with the airline and I will therefore not fly! If you want to speak to someone, forget it, everything is done by email.

Avoid this website. NEVER process large transactions as it may result into glitching. I booked a ticket from Malta to Shanghai and it costs FORTUNES. The payment didn’t process and I had to contact my bank to stop the card. In my opinion, it’s a scam

Follow up review

This is my second review of lol.travel, actually more of a follow up to my original review as I had booked the hotel but had not actually stayed there at the time of writing so didn't really know the outcome. I'm very pleased to say that if I could give lol.travel ten stars I would! The hotel is amazing and everything was booked and organised exactly as lol.travel promised, all at an amazing price - far, far cheaper than any other booking agent could offer. Good experience, just some items to improve in the customer experiencie

Initially my experience was a but scary because I bought my ticket and the booking reference sent via email didn't match with the airlines but if you actually create your account into lol.travel's portal you'll find your booking reference that matchs the airline. It's just a matter of improving their UX when sending confirmation emails. Besides that, I could fly and everything was good. The other pain I had is that, I paid for a FLEXIBLE GUARANTEE TICKET but it's kind of useless because when I was trying to use it, I should still pay a lot which was not super clear when buying. My bad experience on that end, is that I followed the steps that were in the terms and conditions and sent 7 different emails through their customer support form and didn't work. But then I could open a different case through their site's customer support (not through the portal) and I could receive a quick response from the team. So I'd say I can trust this company but they just need to improve the user experience and references to make the customers feel safe and understand that normally people pays too much for flights to not feel safe when something is needed. About FLEXIBLE GUARANTEE TICKET as stated in T&C cover the penalty fee so you won't pay it, but fare difference and management fee needs to be paid. Booked a hotel in tenerife through trivago as was the cheapest. Looked at reviews the next day and was quite concerned that we had been scammed so double checked with hotel to see if booking was active and it was. Went through to check in and everything was perfect, no issues whatsoever.

I booked a ticket from Singapore to Korea with LOL, it was suspicious as the website did not ask for a code pin when I made payment. Still decided to go thru with it (BIG MISTAKE)!! Kaylee Stith is a travel agent at The Travel Mechanic , a luxury-travel agency in North Carolina. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Stith, who left her full-time teaching job to become a luxury-travel agent last year. It has been edited for length and clarity.

Before I started travel advising, I worked as a middle-school special-education teacher in North Carolina.

I stumbled upon the travel-agent industry. I was following someone on Instagram who recently started her own Disney-specific travel agency. I love Disney, and when she announced that she was hiring an agent, I thought that would be a fun part-time job. I applied and made it through the first round. I didn't get hired, but I couldn't stop thinking about becoming a travel advisor.

After that, I started exploring on my own. I listened to podcasts about the industry and learned more from the American Society of Travel Advisors.

One day I was listening to " Trade Secrets ," a travel-agent podcast, when they interviewed Lauren Doyle, the president and owner of The Travel Mechanic, an agency based where I live in Raleigh, North Carolina. I filled out the form for prospective agents and interviewed, and I was offered a position on the team. I signed a contract on April 1, 2023, and left my full-time teaching role in June 2023.

Skills I transferred from my teaching career

Some of my skills transferred from teaching, like being organized and helping people. Because I came from a special-education setting, I was often the liaison between students and their teachers. Being a travel advisor is similar because you're connecting with your clients and interfacing with them.

But the transition was also a challenge, because I forgot what it feels like not to know what you're doing.

My dad is a commercial airline pilot, and I've been traveling my whole life and planning my own trips for a long time. I assumed I'd naturally slide into this role and automatically know how to do everything. But there's a lot to learn.

There were very practical things I had to learn, like how to use the customer-relationship-management system we put client information into, how to take payments, and how to make sure clients are signing off on the right terms and conditions — a lot of that was new to me.

How I make money as an advisor

I offer a complimentary consultation and discuss options with the client to ensure we're both a good fit. Then I charge a flat-rate planning fee. Some agents have a base amount, and depending on how complicated the trip is or how many people are going, they might charge more. Once the client pays the fee, I put their itinerary together.

I also make a commission on things like hotels and tour packages. Some suppliers will pay a decent commission; if you work on the higher end, you make a bigger commission. Commissions are usually paid out after the client has finished the trip.

Because I work with The Travel Mechanic, I get some leads, but I have to find most of them on my own. So a big part of this job is telling everyone I'm a travel agent. I'll mention it in conversations with people I meet because it's travel, it's fun, and people enjoy talking about that.

My clients have so far been in my circles. I've worked with several people from my church, friend groups, and family. Sometimes it's good to start with the people near you.

Have a niche when you're starting out

It's good to have a niche to present yourself as an expert in when starting out. My niches are Hawaii and the UK because they're what I know and love. My family loves Hawaii, and I've visited regularly since I was 9. I've also been to England many times. I studied abroad in college and lived in Bath for four months as a student.

The locations are similar in some ways because they're higher-ticket bucket-list destinations. They're also great destinations for first-time travelers who want to adventure out on a bigger trip but go somewhere that feels familiar.

Hawaii is still far away, but the driving and currency are familiar. Though England is also pretty far away, the language and culture are not that different from the US. Those are my two favorite destinations, and I do some Disney trips on the side.

Advice for prospective travel agents

Many people think this job is fun and relatively easy to get into. You don't need specific training, but it can be hard to get going. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

If you want to get into travel advising, I recommend starting part time or having another source of income before you get established and move to full time.

Also, do a lot of research. This will help you see if you're a good fit for the industry and find an agency you feel aligned with that will support you. If you're unsure where to start, visit Host Agency Reviews to research agencies near you.

While it's possible to go at it alone, starting with an agency is easier. Your commissions with an agency may be a bit lower, but an agency will offer advice and assist you when you're starting out with leads.

Lessons I've learned so far

I attended the annual Ensemble travel-agent conference in Las Vegas last year. I met with suppliers, tour operators, destination-management companies, and other agents. Everyone was welcoming and encouraging, which was a pleasant surprise. Because I'm an independent contractor, it'd be easy to think I'm competing with other people, but that isn't the case; there are enough clients to go around.

Also, I learned that it's OK that I'm not the perfect fit for everyone. I can be a perfectionist, but it's impossible to always get everything right. I had a potential client who contacted me about a honeymoon, and I felt like it was a great conversation, but she never got back to me. I couldn't stop thinking what did I do wrong? But I can't be the best fit for everyone. It's been a tough lesson, but I've learned and grown so much this past year.
