The Ultimate Road Trip Food List

Healthy snacks for a road trip

We’ll start with healthy snacks for the road. I don’t know about you, but when we go on road trips, we tend to fall back on fast food and junk food. In an effort to have a quasi healthy road trip we make sure to include some healthy options so we can at least feel like we’ve balanced out all our snickers bars and Wendy’s frosties. Here’s our list of the best road trip foods that won’t leave you feeling sluggish at the end of the day. We also added in a few recommendations of some of our favorite brands.

Healthy Snacks For Car Rides 1. Fruit: Bananas, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, grapes, apples, oranges 2. Sliced veggies: carrots, cucumbers, celery, bell peppers, pickles, radishes 3. Road Trip Snacks For Kids And Toddlers

While we don’t put a distinction between road trip food for the adults and road trip food for kids, here are some fun ideas you can add in addition to the travel food listed above. We found that allowing for leniency with what we let our kid snack on will mean a more fun time for everyone in the car.

Essential Non Food Items

Utensils and napkins for a road trip

Now that you’ve got your travel food and made your road trip food list, let’s talk about non food items to have on your road trip packing list. We are both advocates for minimal waste living so we do advise using reusable items like real utensils, glass containers, and reusable straws rather than single-use items. I know it can feel like a nuisance, but once you get used to doing it, it’s easy to integrate it into your habits. We’ve provided links to different products, so you can check out some good options.

-Trash bags (old shopping bags work well) – Stackable glass or plastic containers (While glass may feel like a hazard, I find that most of them are built for endurance and would require some extreme throwing around to actually break. Either way, bringing containers rather than an entire bag of snacks is a great space saver.) -Reusable straws (we like this multipack option here ) -Bento boxes (another option is to make individual bento boxes with everyone’s preferred snacks put in. It’s essentially a healthier version of a Lunchable. Great option if you’re traveling with kids.) Check out these cute bento boxes here . -Utensils -Plates -Paper towels -Hand sanitizer -Ziplock bags -Wipes -Cups if you want to share drinks -Ice packs for the cooler (We prefer to use reusable ice packs like these , but frozen water bottles or ice cubes in a ziplock back will do the job as well.) -Reusable grocery bag to carry your non-perishable stuff -Plastic tub (If you’re going on a long road trip and will have lots of snacks, a good option is to pack all your non-perishable items in a tub like this .) -Cooler

  • How much space will you have in your car?

Before you head out on your epic road trip, we suggest packing the night before. Alleviating as much stress as possible on the day you leave, especially when you’re doing a road trip with a toddler , is key to enjoying the road trip journey. We find that the night before, it’s best to:

  • Wash, cut, and peel all vegetables and fruit.
  • Pack up all non perishable food and supplies.
  • Prepare any road trip sandwiches you plan to eat.

Lastly, don’t forget to make sure all your tasty road trip snacks are within reaching distance in the car.

We hope you enjoyed our complete road trip food list. Happy road tripping!

It's been years since the entire Drummond clan took a proper family road trip, but Ree took the kids on lots of by-car adventures when they were younger, especially as part of homeschooling lessons. "Most people are just waking up, the roads are significantly less populated…coffee tastes better."

Toffee Popcorn crack dessert

A road trip is not a road trip without snacks. That's a fact. Whether your little brother Kevin is hogging the party mix in the backseat, or you're repeatedly taking handfuls of spiced nuts from the cupholder while everyone else snoozes, an accessible elevated car snack can turn the doldrums of highway hypnosis into a Mary Poppins display of magically enthusiastic scenery (if things actually appear to be animated, those were not the right snack bars). When the smallest offense starts a fight ( do not touch my shoulder, Kevin), a snack-packed arsenal is the answer. Do yourself a favor and whip up a few batches of these pilgrimage-worthy snacks to share with the crew ahead of time. One hand on the wheel, one hand on the chocolate coconut date bar, as they say.

By using portioned containers, you can easily control snack portions and keep track of how much food is being consumed during your trip.

Insulated coolers

Insulated coolers help keep perishable snacks fresh and safe to eat during long drives. Some of the best options include the Yeti Roadie 24, Yeti Tundra 45, and YETI Tundra Haul Wheeled Cooler. These coolers are durable, well-constructed, and provide excellent insulation to keep your food and drinks cold.

When using an insulated cooler, be sure to pack it with ice or ice packs and keep it in a shaded area to prevent the ice from melting too quickly.

Reusable snack bags

For an eco-friendly alternative to disposable plastic bags when packing road trip snacks, consider reusable snack bags. Some popular options include the Stasher 4-Pack Lunch/Travel Bundle Silicone Storage Bags, the Qinline Reusable Food Storage Bags 10-Pack, and the (re)zip Reusable Leak-proof Food Storage Flat Bags.

These bags are durable, leak-proof, and easy to clean, making them perfect for storing snacks on the go. When packing snacks in reusable snack bags, make sure to securely seal the bags to prevent spills or leaks.

Staying Safe While Snacking on the Road

eating and drinking while driving

While enjoying your delicious and healthy road trip snacks, it’s essential to stay safe during your journey. In this section, we’ll discuss important safety tips for snacking on the road, including avoiding choking hazards for young children and taking breaks at rest stops for safe eating.

By following these safety precautions, you can ensure that everyone stays happy, healthy, and safe during your road trip adventures.

Avoiding choking hazards

Avoiding choking hazards is particularly important when it comes to young children. Foods like popcorn, whole nuts, and hard candies should be avoided, and parents should supervise their children while they eat.

When preparing bite-sized fruit and veggies, make sure to cut them into small, manageable pieces. By taking these precautions, you can keep your little ones safe and enjoy worry-free snacking during your road trip.

Taking breaks at rest stops

For safe and relaxed snacking during road trips, consider taking breaks at rest stops. Instead of trying to eat while driving, schedule periodic breaks at rest stops or other safe locations to enjoy your snacks. This will not only prevent distractions and accidents while driving but also allow you to stretch your legs, use the restroom, and enjoy your food in a more relaxed setting.

Remember, safety should always come first on the open road.

Road Trip Food List: Easy to Pack Meals & Snacks

This post may contain affiliate links, view our disclosure policy .

Are you looking for a road trip food list that includes the best road trip snacks and other food to bring on a road trip?

Road trips can range from being budget-friendly to out-of-this-world expensive if you do not plan ahead, especially when it comes to eating food.

The temptation to grab a snack at every gas station, as well as to eat out at restaurants or gorge on fast food, can really start to add up in terms of money and wasted time.

One way to save money and time while road tripping, however, is to bring your own food!

By making a road trip food list and packing fun road trip snacks, you’ll avoid having to stop and spend as much.

Our road trip food list includes easy road trip snacks, as well as portable breakfast, lunch, and dinner options – plus, a FREE Road Trip Food List printable to take with you to the grocery store.

Road Trip Food List: Breakfast

One of our absolute best family road trip tips is to leave bright and early in the morning when starting a long road trip.

As the most important meal of the day, luckily, having breakfast on the road is the easiest meal to eat cold and on the go.

If you decide to hit the road early, or if your hotel en route doesn’t offer a free breakfast, plan ahead by bringing along these simple road trip breakfast foods.

Our tried-and-true road trip food list awaits!

Road Trip Breakfast Ideas

  • Yogurt tubes and granola bars
  • Muffins, donuts, and scones
  • Bagels and cream cheese
  • Squeezable applesauce
  • Hard-boiled eggs
  • Peanut butter, banana, and granola wrapped up in a tortilla
  • Make-Ahead Fruit & Yogurt Breakfast Parfaits

Additional planning tip: For added morning fun, use the category “breakfast foods”, “brands or cereal”, or “types of fruit” while you play a road trip word game .

When it comes to planning for lunch and beyond, your road trip packing list should always include a reliable portable cooler .

Whether you chill made-ahead sandwiches, salami & cheese, fruits, or veggies, there are so many awesome road trip food ideas when it comes to having lunch on the go.

What we love about these road tip lunch ideas is that they keep us out of congested cities and fast-food drive-thrus during the busy noon hour.

Road Trip Lunch Ideas

  • Premade sandwiches with deli meat and cheese (make them extra fun by using shaped sandwich cutters !)
  • Peanut butter sandwiches (skip the jelly to avoid sogginess)

Road Trip Food List: Dinner

If there is one meal that you choose to splurge on, I recommend stopping to have dinner at a roadside restaurant or cafe.

Though this may not be your final destination, experiencing another city in this way will help you check more places off of your family travel bucket list !

If you’re not keen on stopping, however, here are the road trip foods we enjoy that are tasty and hearty enough to serve as dinner.

Road Trip Food

Travel Snacks for Toddlers

Road tripping with toddlers presents its own set of challenges and requires additional thought when it comes to toddler-friendly road trip activities and food.

(It’s much harder to keep a close eye on them when they’re in the backseat, and you’re in the front.)

When considering toddler road trip foods, the most important thing is to avoid giving them anything to eat that could be deemed a choking hazard.

In addition, opt for healthy versus overly sweet options that may give them a tummy ache.

Our favorite healthy toddler car snacks and road trip foods include:

  • Graham crackers
  • Snap pea crisps
  • Applesauce and/or yogurt pouches
  • Cheese sticks
  • Soft mini muffins
  • Whole-grain crackers
  • Bananas and/or this apple slices

9 Essential Tips For Traveling With Food

As seasoned travelers, we’ve assembled a list of tips for traveling with road trip foods and make-ahead hotel room meals.

  • Use up your most delicate fruit first when on long-haul road trips.

In other words, start by eating bananas and berries, then move on to more sturdy produce such as apples and oranges that don’t spoil as easily.

2. Every family needs an organized packing strategy !

When it comes to road trip food, tortillas, pitas, or other sturdy flatbreads work better to bring along than do loaves of bread. They take up a lot less room and do not risk getting smashed.

3. When packing a cooler with items that need to stay chilled, be sure to lay the ice on the top, versus the bottom of the cooler.

This is because cold air sinks and will, therefore, disperse itself more evenly if laid on top of the food.

4. Aim to open the cooler only 1 or 2 times a day in order to maintain its refrigeration and keep the ice from thawing.

5. Also, make all food, including snacks, easily accessible throughout the duration of your family road trip.

This prevents someone (likely mom or dad!) from having to constantly bend over the back seat or stop to open the trunk every time hunger or boredom hits.

6. Avoid bringing anything made of glass on your road trip, including glass food containers. Glass is heavy, bulky, and very dangerous when broken within the confines of your family vehicle.

7. Assemble and bring along a road trip kit with the following road trip essentials for spills, clean-ups, and car sickness:

  • Anti-bacterial wipes
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Garbage bags
  • Ziplock bags
  • Napkins/paper towels
  • Saltine crackers and motion sickness medicine

8. Each time you stop while on a road trip, don’t forget to pitch any garbage that has accumulated.

This prevents build-up and smelliness.

9. Head to the grocery store with our FREE printable checklist and purchase all of your road trip food in one shopping trip!

This is a great list as we also big in road trip. Snacks is so important especially to keep them from asking are we there yet. Haha… I myself like peanuts to keep me awake when it’s my turn to drive.

This is such a comprehensive list and it is so helpful as I predict a lot of us will be going on more road trips once we can. Prepping these meals will definitely save some money and help the kids feel less bored. I know that my kids are usually pleased munching stuffs during road trips. I also like that it is more likely for the road trip snack to be more healthier than what you’ll buy elsewhere.

Thank you! Yes, the health factor of pre-packing is a big one, as is the enormous cost savings 🙂

I like to have a good mix of healthy (kids like apples, those are easy to eat) and snacky/salty. I am also very particular. about road trip drinks. Big coffees, la croix, iced tea!

I like your ideas! We’d be good road trip buddies!

Best Snacks to Take on a Bus Trip

Snacks are an absolute must for any long charter bus rental adventure, but gas station options often leave something to be desired. Packing your favorite bus snacks ahead of time can prevent embarrassing stomach growling and ensure you get healthy, delicious treats that will keep you feeling good throughout the journey. If you have a long bus trip ride ahead, make sure you have the right bus snacks on hand!

Food to Stay Away from on a Long Bus Trip

When planning what to eat while traveling in a bus, it's best to avoid:

Food to Stay Away from on a Long Bus Trip

  • Food that has a smell. Pickled foods, stinky cheese, fish, and similar items aren't snacks to bring on a charter bus trip. Strong smells can bother your fellow passengers and increase the risk of nausea during the long bus ride. Nobody wants to be locked in a bus with someone who's bus-sick.
  • Food that needs to be refrigerated. Stay away from milk, mayo-based foods, and anything else that's perishable. Foods that cannot be consumed at room temperature can make you sick and may spoil.
  • Food that requires utensils. Healthy road trip meals are one thing, but if they can't be eaten with your hands, don't bother! Make sure to pack snacks that are easy to consume on the bus ride. Hand-held, simple snacks are optimal to avoid managing utensils and potential messes. The last thing you want to deal with is to wonder where to put your dirty and sticky utensils during the rest of your journey.
  • Messy foods. Sticky, juicy, and powdered treats might require napkins and will leave your seat looking worse for wear. Nobody expects someone who spent many hours on a bus to look perfectly groomed, but it's best to keep messes to a minimum. If possible, stick with clean, tasty snacks to keep your seating area neat and comfortable.
  • Food in containers that can't be thrown out. Disposable containers will leave you with more room in your bag for other bus snacks. Although we appreciate the spirit of keeping waste to a minimum, reusable packaging can be messy and bulky. If you want to stay eco-friendly, bring snacks like apples, but keep sticky stuff like peanut butter at home.

Best Snacks for a Bus Trip

The best bus trip food ideas for adults:

  • Bottled water: Essential to stay hydrated throughout your journey. Drinking water, or even juice, will help you avoid headaches, nausea, and lethargy. Packing several bottles for long bus trips is a good idea, especially if you have salty food like potato chips.
  • Bars: One of the easiest snacks to take on a long bus trip is granola/breakfast/protein bars. It's a nutritious snack that offers a quick energy fix without taking up much space. Just make sure to avoid granola bars with too much sugar — you don't want a sugar crash!
  • Raw veggies: Celery, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, mini cucumbers, and other raw vegetables are nutrient-packed and mess-free, making them a nutritious choice. They make for great bus foods and can be refreshing too.
  • Dried fruit: Bringing dried apricots, apples, prunes, and even raisins is a perfect way to get a burst of sugar without a chocolatey mess. They're easier to eat than fresh fruit and are easy to grab.
  • Trail mix: Plant-based protein will keep you full for a while, and nuts like pistachios, walnuts, peanuts, and cashews are packed full of it. They also contain healthy fats, like omega-3s, and fiber. A fun snack with a bit of chocolate can make the hours fly by. Trail mix comes in different flavors and is among passengers' favorite snacks.
  • Pre-made sandwich: make and wrap a few PB+Js or, better yet, PB+bananas on whole wheat bread to munch on during your trip. These will keep you full with a healthy wallop of fat and proteins. They can keep you full for a long period and make for easy packing.
  • Beef Jerky: One of the best snacks for a bus trip is jerky! Low in fat, high in protein, and super lightweight, beef jerky is a perfect choice to get you through a long trip. Since beef jerky doesn't contain nuts, it can also be safer for other passengers if they have allergies.
  • Crackers: Saltines, rice cakes, and even animal crackers are go-to road trip snacks because they can help you combat nausea. These light and crunchy snacks provide the same satisfying crackle as potato chips without the added salt and fat.
  • Cereal: Make a bag of all of your favorite cereals for your next bus trip for a mess-free, tasty snack. It can be a regressive snack that'll make the long hours spent on a charter bus trip go faster.

Kids’ Favorite Food for Long Bus Rides

Let's face it. Kids and adults don't always like the same foods, so we've assembled an easy reference list of kids' snacks for field trips and other long bus rides.

Kids’ Favorite Food for Long Bus Rides

  • Snack box: Perfect for any school transportation , you can fill a snack box with anything — crackers, veggie straws, chips, granola, and/or cookies.
  • Juice box: Juice boxes are a great way to keep your child hydrated while allowing them a sweet treat.
  • Applesauce pouch: Squeezable applesauce pouches are a mess-free, tasty road trip snack for kids of all ages.
  • Fresh or dried fruit: Fruit, so long as it's not too runny, makes a wonderful, healthy snack for your child.
  • Bite-size muffins: They are manageable, tasty, and fun for kids during several hours of travel.

In all, the best food for a long journey is healthy, easy and clean to eat, and tastes good. Try fresh fruits, veggies, trail mix, pre-made sandwiches, crackers, and other munchies. Your stomach will thank you!

The 8 Best Road Trip Snacks From Walmart

They're all under $10!

good bus trip snacks

Adobe Stock/DDM Design

We love a good road trip, and summer is prime time for hitting the road for an adventure. One critical stop before embarking upon any excursion (besides getting gas and preparing the ultimate road trip playlist) is ensuring your snack situation is on point .

Luckily, Walmart has a plethora of affordable snacking options to curate the perfect road trip menu. With so many choices to consider at the megastore, avoid a road bump as you embark on your journey by choosing from our list of favorite Walmart snacks to pack on your summer escape.

What To Look for in a Summer Road Trip Snack

Three characteristics make a snack road-trip worthy:

  • Snacks that create little to no mess. Cleaning up a spill on the road is not an obstacle you need.
  • Items that are individually packed. They’re easy to eat and reduce the spread of germs.
  • A variety of flavors and textures that appeal to everyone in the car.
  • We’ve added a bonus pillar here by sharing a list of snacks that each cost under $10, with the majority under $5.

Don't forget to pack a small cooler to keep all your snacks fresh , crisp, and conveniently packed for easy grabbing. Keep things simple, tasty, fun, and budget-friendly at the store so you have some extra cash for adventures on the road .

The Best Summer Road Trip Snacks From Walmart

Baby carrots.

Dotdash Meredith / Janet Maples

Grab a one-pound bag of baby-cut carrots for a crunchy snack that costs under two bucks. Walmart's baby-cut carrots are harvested at peak ripeness, then cleaned and bagged, making them ready to eat with no washing needed. All you have to do is tear the bag open, pass it around, and enjoy! Carrots are a long-lasting veggie, so they can stay fresh and crisp at room temperature for a while, but for prolonged freshness and to prevent food waste, we recommend storing these baby-cut carrots away in a cooler .

Organic Bananas

Bananas are a classic road trip food for a reason and an entire bunch of organic bananas at Walmart costs just $2. Whether you’re buying them at peak ripeness to eat immediately, or selecting ones on the greener side to enjoy later, bananas are a super sweet and satisfying snack to easily enjoy on the go. They last for a longer period than other fresh fruit, don’t run the risk of making a juicy, sticky mess, and are just plain delicious.

Great Value Chewy Granola Bars Variety Pack

Granola bars are another classic on this list, and this 24-count box ($3.84) provides enough variety for all passengers. It's a perfect option when you’re poking around the snack bag for a sweet treat that won’t make a mess. Take your pick from Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip, or S’mores, and enjoy a chewy, sticky, albeit neat snack as you gaze through the window at the view outside. Granola bars are shelf stable, making them ideal for longer car rides.

Great Value String Cheese

It doesn't matter how old you are—eating string cheese is never not fun. This generous 24-count bag ($4.97) of low-moisture part-skim mozzarella string cheese is perfect for snacking on the road. These individually wrapped snacks are a tasty grab-and-go cheese option that will satisfy your taste buds and boost your energy for exploration. Store these in your little roadside cooler to maintain freshness.

Great Value Almonds

Almonds are one of my favorite snacks when I’m on the go, and if they're individually packed, even better! This box of single-serving 1-ounce bags ($4.98) contains either whole natural or lightly salted and roasted almonds. Throw these almonds in your snack bag for a quick, easy-to-reach snack that will satisfy your appetite and, if you’re anything like me, that craving for something crunchy. This is a great deal for almonds, too—we all know how high the price tag on nuts can get.

Great Value Omega-3 Trail Mix

A natural mood booster in the form of a yummy snack? Count us in. One of my personal favorites on the list, this 8-count box of individually bagged trail mix ($5.98) is for the flavor and texture lovers out there. Each bag contains 1.5 ounces of sweet, salty, chewy, crunchy goodness. The trail mix includes dried sweetened cranberries, pepitas, walnuts, almonds, and pecans. The fact that this snack will also energize and satiate you for adventure is a fantastic added bonus.

Great Value Original Beef Jerky

There's something about road tripping and beef jerky that just feels right. If you ask my husband what snack we need to pick up for the road, beef jerky will always be on the list. Jerky is generally on the pricier end when it comes to snacks, making this 5-pack box ($7.88) more budget friendly than those found in other stores. If you’re traveling with a group, these individually wrapped 1.25-ounce bags are great for sharing.

Party Size Mixed Candy Bag

We will never forget the candy bag. Tackle that craving for something sweet with this mix of fruity, chewy, and chocolatey treats. The variety pack ($9.96) contains M&M’s, Snickers, Skittles, and Starburst packed in a 19-ounce bag of flavorful candy fun! Whatever you prefer, or whichever flavor profile you’re craving, there’s something for anyone to grab and enjoy. Candy also has a long shelf life, making this option perfect for lengthy journeys (if the bag lasts that long!).

Moscow Bus Network

Moscow Bus Network

Moscow's crazy traffic and its excellent metro network mean that the city's buses and trolleybuses aren't the number one option for tourists .

Moscow has hundreds of bus and trolleybus routes , many of which connect the city centre with its otherwise-isolated suburban neighbourhoods. Regular traffic jams mean that the bus network has not always been the most recommendable option , especially as the metro is so efficient.

Having said that, new bus lanes have opened up recently making it a comfortable alternative for certain routes. The bus can be a good, economical option at night , when 13 routes replace the metro after it shuts down (all starting from Kitay-Gorod metro and taking the main roads out to the edge off the city).

More modern buses have screens indicating the stops along the route, but in older ones you may well struggle knowing where to get off if relying on the Russian-language loudspeaker announcements .

If you do decide to catch the bus, tickets can be purchased from kiosks and metro stops, and the majority of lines operate between 6 am and 1 am.

Local insight to help you plan your next San Diego vacation.

Tables and chairs fill the airy dining room of Herb and Wood restaurant in San Diego.

A food travel influencer’s Top 17 must-eat places in San Diego

Hi! I’m Jeremy Jacobowitz, a full-time food travel influencer who goes all over the world to find the best of the best! I’m in San Diego not only for its perfect weather and dreamy beaches but for its super-underrated food scene. I went cross-country to scout out the best bites San Diego has to offer. Here are 17 of my must-eat spots to try when you visit San Diego. Let me tell you why …

Shawarma Guys Food Truck

Where : 3012 Grape St., San Diego, CA 92102 Located in the parking lot of a South Park liquor store, this food truck was rated No. 1 on Yelp as the best food truck in California, is Guy Fieri-approved , and serves up mouth-watering delights. Indulge in their signature shawarma eggroll, stuffed with wagyu beef, American cheese, onions, jalapeños and lemon garlic sauce. Don’t miss their lemon cream crop fries, drowning in gravy, fried chicken, lemon garlic paste and hot sauce. The Fattoush wrap and falafel pita are also must-tries, both offering delightful crunchiness. The homemade lemon garlic condiment is a hot commodity and elevates every dish on the menu. And Shawarma Guys recently opened their first brick-and-mortar location at 5525 Jackson Drive in La Mesa.

Las Cuatro Milpas

Where : 1857 Logan Ave., San Diego, CA 92113 San Diego’s oldest Mexican restaurant remains a fan favorite. Walk inside and immerse yourself in nearly a century of history. Plus, the presence of Mexican abuelas in the kitchen adds an authentic charm. Despite a small menu, every choice is a winner. I opted for the pork taco and chicken burrito. Juicy meats, flavorful tortillas and the perfect crunch – it’s the quintessential experience. Arrive early to beat the crowds because this Barrio Logan spot gets busy fast.

Hawaiian Fresh Seafood

Where : 2400 Historic Decatur Road, Ste. 107, San Diego, CA 92106 When it comes to poke, the West Coast knows its stuff. The Spam musubi at Hawaiian Fresh Seafood in Liberty Station nailed that ideal sweet-salty balance, offering a delightful bite. I also tried the poke plate, which comes with three scoops of fish, accompanied by rice or salad. The tuna practically melts in your mouth, while the chili pepper salmon brings creamy goodness with a subtle kick of heat at the end. This spot has a chill vibe and flavors that hit just right.

Herb & Wood

Where : 2210 Kettner Blvd., San Diego, CA 92101 Nestled in a spacious, outdoorsy Little Italy setting, Herb & Wood serves up seasonal California-Mediterranean food with a focus on wood-fired cooking. I kicked off my meal with tender pork belly atop butternut squash, brown butter and a candied orange medley. My next course was the roasted baby carrots, which were sweet and crunchy with cashew sesame dukkah, aleppo yogurt and pesto. My main dish was the Torchio pasta with slow-cooked, mouth-watering ragu, with burrata, almond picada, breadcrumbs and herbs. I ended the meal on a high note with ricotta hush puppies for dessert. The rustic, relaxed vibes were on point and the flavors hit the spot.

Tacos El Gordo

Where : 511 F St., San Diego, CA 92102 This place in Downtown San Diego was recommended by almost every local, and I was excited to try the adobada taco, featuring spicy pork on a handmade corn tortilla with onions, cilantro and cheese. The tortilla was solid, holding up all the goodness within. The shell was an ideal density and texture, delivering a balance of sweetness, acidity and just the right amount of fat.

Azuki Sushi Lounge

Where : 2321 Fifth Ave., San Diego, CA 92101 Sushi hits differently on the West Coast, and Azuki Sushi in Downtown San Diego blew me away. Their uni toast topped with chopped toro, prosciutto and truffle aioli is a dream-worthy and definite must-order. They easily have some of the best crunchy tuna rice I’ve ever had. Every dish struck the perfect balance between crispiness and freshness. Azuki consistently delivers dishes that hit all the right notes, making it a standout spot for sushi enthusiasts.

Kinme Okasa

Where : 2505 Fifth Ave., San Diego, CA 92103 Azuki’s nearby sister restaurant, Kinme , is an omakase experience. It showcases a wonderful preparation of incredible ingredients, and I was blown away. One standout dish was the A5 wagyu tartare puff sandwich with pickled daikon and caramelized jam – a dreamy combo with some of the fat rendered in the puff. The whole meal was worth just this bite. The kamatoro with caviar and the monster piece of toro with fresh wasabi were perfection. The braised miyazaki a5 wagyu, both rich and decadent, fell apart in my mouth. A matcha to top it all off was a nice way to finish the meal.

Homestyle Hawaiian

Where : Multiple locations With five locations and over 15 years of serving, Homestyle Hawaiian has solidified itself as a San Diego favorite, dishing out a variety of Hawaiian classics. The Kalua wontons kicked off my experience, with crispy shells packed with Kalua pig, cream cheese and their signature sauce — a delightful balance of crunch and creamy goodness. The ahi poke combo comes with white rice and macaroni salad, featuring tuna that practically melts in your mouth. The macaroni is mayo-forward but complements the heat from the tuna that practically melts in your mouth. Don’t miss the Garlic Shrimp Scampi combo — messy, but undeniably delicious. I got mine spicy.

Where : 634 14th St., No. 110, San Diego, CA 92101 Asa, the aesthetically pleasing Japanese bakery in San Diego’s East Village , has every flavor profile – sweet to savory. I indulged in an iced matcha tea alongside a matcha cream croissant, which was utterly buttery and flaky, striking the right balance of sweetness and earthy notes. I broke my “no eating bagels outside of New York” rule and got the everything mochi bagel (toasted). While it wasn’t what I expected, the mochi bagel offered a delightful chew and a unique flavor profile. Finally, I tried the curry pan, bursting with deep, rich curry flavors in the meat. Each bite made me miss being in Japan.

Morning Glory

Where :  550 W. Date St. Suite C, San Diego, CA 92101 Stepping into Morning Glory in Little Italy, you hit sensation overload, but it’s exciting. The menu is big, but my eyes and stomach were up for the adventure. Their famous Japanese soufflé pancakes stole the show – light, airy and practically fluffy through my fork. They are magically both light and dense, with the right custard ratio. The Turkish eggs were fresh with a pop of heat, paired perfectly with garlic herb Greek yogurt. Their egg salad sando, inspired by 7-Eleven, is made on Wonder bread with simple, subtle flavors that aim to satisfy. Pro tip: Come early to beat the crowd.

Sunnyboy Biscuit Co.

Where : 3749 Park Blvd., San Diego, CA 92103 Sunnyboy Biscuit Co. , near Balboa Park , brings a little bit of the south to San Diego. I started with the Sunny B’ fried chicken. The biscuit itself is buttery and is piled with cheesy eggs and crispy chicken doused in pure maple syrup – a combo that always leaves you wanting more. The biscuit brûlée was messy in the best way possible, with layers of cinnamon, candied peaches, maple whipped cream, and a crunchy brûléed sugar coat. It’s a delicious fusion of biscuit, cinnamon roll, and peach pie all in one heavenly bite.

Tuetano Taqueria

Where : 216 Third Ave., Stes. A and B, Chula Vista, CA 91910 (pending) Michelin-recognized and considered one of San Diego’s best taco shops, this place – formerly in Old Town San Diego and now reopening in Chula Vista in summer 2024 – lives up to the hype. Their crispy birria tacos are a standout, especially with the option to add bone marrow on top. I tried both the classic 36-hour cooked meat taco with (and without) marrow for comparison. The meat was tender and flavorful, and if you like it hot, squeeze a drop of chili oil to elevate the experience. The smoky flavor is unforgettable, and the addition of bone marrow adds a delicious twist.

Oscars Mexican Seafood

Where : Multiple locations This local favorite has three San Diego locations . Their vast selection of hot sauces, including homemade varieties, is a heat lover’s dream. I started off with their breakfast burrito, loaded with eggs, cheese, potato and avocado. You can choose to add smoked fish, bacon, steak or chorizo. I chose chorizo, which delivered satisfying warmth and flavor. The Torta de Oscar features a delightful surf-and-turf combo of tender steak, shrimp and cabbage on soft bread. Beware of the creamy homemade sauce – it packs a surprising amount of heat! Also, even in warm San Diego weather, don’t skip the fish stew, which mixes fresh fish and veggies in chicken broth.

Ironside Fish & Oyster

Where : 1654 India St., San Diego, CA 92101 San Diego’s chic-est seafood restaurant offers a stunning Little Italy space and an impressive array of raw and cooked delights. I opted for the chef’s choice crudo, enjoying the burst of freshness from the impeccably fresh fish. Their fish and chips, with tempura-battered fish and homemade fries, struck the balance of delivering a satisfying crunch without overshadowing the delicate flavors of the fish. This place is packed with decadent food and great decor.

Where : 2222 Logan Ave., San Diego, CA 92113 I was craving fish tacos, but the limited lunchtime menu on the day I visited Fish Guts in Barrio Logan enticed me to order the only thing featured: the fish sandwich. (Availability of items varies from day to day.) Nestled between a toasted brioche bun was a generous portion of Modelo beer-battered whitefish, accompanied by zesty Mexican tartar sauce, pickles and crisp shrettuce. Each bite was exciting and textured, from the crunchy exterior of the fish to the buttery richness of the bun.

Where : 1890 San Diego Ave., San Diego, CA 92110 When you’re in the mood for authentic Mexican fare, this taco shop near Old Town is your go-to spot. With an array of breakfast burrito options, all lovingly crafted on their homemade flour tortillas, the choice among chorizo, ham and bacon can be tough. I was told to try the bacon, and it did not disappoint. Every bite had a blend of fluffy eggs, salty potatoes and crispy bacon, perfectly layered within the warm flour tortilla. The no-frills atmosphere adds to its charm, allowing the authentic, flavor-packed food to stand out.

Lucha Libre

Where : 1810 W. Washington St., San Diego, CA 92103 This Cali-style burrito joint near Mission Hills (there are two other San Diego locations as well) holds a special place in my heart, since as a TV producer I filmed my favorite segment ever here. But I had to come back to eat!  I tried their birria queso tacos, which were so tender and juicy I felt like I needed a straw. I also savored their poblano California-style burrito, featuring crispy fries in the middle. The corn poblano sauce popped against the smoky and savory flavors of the meat. Oh, and that creamy cilantro sauce? Put that on everything.
