CHAIN BRIDGE

With the Buda Castle in the background, the Hungarian capital’s first bridge, now a monument, is a fascinating spectacle that has attracted many tourists to Budapest. Before it was built, the river could only be crossed via a temporary pontoon bridge, by boat or over the ice. However, a big city needed a real, stones and mortar bridge to match, which is why Count István Széchenyi, the “greatest Hungarian”, made every possible effort to ensure it got built: he made studies abroad, had various different plans made, visited factories and experimented with materials. The decisive step was made when he invited English engineer William Tierney Clark to Hungary, as well as his (unrelated) namesake, Scottish engineer Adam Clark, who ended up building the bridge.

The Hungarian Parliament building, the “House of the Country”, located on the Danube bank, is an iconic building of Budapest’s World Heritage and is the home of legislature and the guardian of the Hungarian Holy Crown.

Lavishly decorated both inside and outside, the Hungarian Parliament was inspired by the Houses of Parliament in London, so the neo-Gothic style is dominant, but it also bears Renaissance and Baroque features.

MARGARET BRIDGE

Margaret Bridge or Margit híd is a three-way bridge in Budapest, Hungary, connecting Buda and Pest across the Danube and linking Margaret Island to the banks. It is the second-northernmost and second-oldest public bridge in Budapest.

It was designed by French engineer Ernest Goüin and built by the construction company Maison Ernest Goüin et Cie. between 1872 and 1876, the engineer in charge being Émile Nouguier.

Chain Bridge

Opened in 1849, the Szechenyi Bridge was the first permanent bridge connecting the Buda and Pest sides. Named after István Széchenyi, a revered Hungarian Statesman, the bridge was designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark. Today, the wrought-iron chain suspension bridge is an important monument and tourist site.

Margaret Bridge

Margaret Bridge is noted for its unusual three-way design. The bridge connects Buda and Pest while also linking Margaret Island. Designed by French engineer Ernest Goüin, the construction of the bridge commenced in 1872 and was completed in 1876 and stretches across a length of 607.5 meters.

The 2.5 kilometers long Margaret Island can be accessed via Margaret Bridge and Arpad Bridge. It is a famous recreational area in the city with promenades, cycle paths, and picnic spots inside the Island. It also houses ruins dating back to the Middle Ages. Margaret Island is known for its parks, swimming pools, and musical fountains.

Hungarian Parliament

The Hungarian parliament is a palatial neo-gothic style building located on the Pest side of the city. Opened in 1902, it's the largest building in Hungary. The building has 691 rooms and is around 96 meters in height. Inside the Central Hall of Parliament is where the Holy Crown of Hungary is kept.

For the best panoramic views of Budapest, you should visit Fisherman's Bastion, established in 1851. It is located near Buda Castle. Built in the Neo-Romanesque style, the building's main facade is 140 meters long. The Bastion was first built in the 1700s and guarded by the guild of local fishermen, hence the name Fisherman's Bastion.

A majestic expression of Baroque-style architecture, the grand palace today is a World Heritage Site. It is home to the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. During World War II, the Castle was almost destroyed, but thanks to restoration efforts, it retained its beauty.

The next dishes from you need to decide are roasted trout almond coating on steamed green bean bed with mashed potato and dill sauce or duck leg confit with buttery mashed potato served with steamed red cabbage, or veal stew with Hungarian noodle dumplings. Finally, the fourth one is the dessert everyone is waiting for at the end of the trip called Flan cake forest fruit ragout.

Furthermore, we are thinking of vegetarian people as well, so as the main dish you also could have other options like grilled Halloumi cheese or tofu with a fresh side salad. #1 – Cruise with 4- or 7-Course Dinner & Live Piano or Folk & Operetta  BEST VALUE!

Prices: 4-course dinner: from €91 , 7-course dinner: from €107.

We really enjoyed this evening boat excursion with delicious served dinner and entertaining piano duet.

It departs at 19.30 / 7.30 pm from a dock next to Elizabeth Bridge.

The cruise is 2.5-hour long and you may think it’s too long but the serving of food plus music combined with a peformance of a talented singer is extremely well-organised.

Note: The upper deck hosts the dinner with piano duet and singing, while the larger ground floor hall is where the folk dance and operetta performance takes place (also with served dinner of course). It’s a good idea to book with window seat if you go for the folk show option since not all of the tables are next to a window in that room.

Even as locals who’ve already taken a couple of Danube cruises since living in Budapest this one stands out because of the:

  • Quality of food – really tasty soup (choose from 2 options), a main dish and a dessert.
  • Level of entertainment – talented musicians and a singer
  • Kindness and professionalism of staff.

So if you’re looking for a pleasant night program in Budapest we can’t recommend the cruise with 4- or 7-couse dinner highly enough.

Date & Time

  • Every day at 19.30 / 7.30 pm

A cruise boat on the Danube, sailing past the illuminated Parliament

Prices: hungarian dinner: from €69, international dinner: 89 eur.

We also recommend taking the 19.00 o’clock evening tour with a Hungarian or multi-course buffet dinner, accompanied by a spectacular Folk Dance Show & Live Music .

It’s ideal for those who want to sample typical Hungarian dishes all at once.

When To Go On A Danube River Cruise In Budapest?

The best time to go on a Danube river cruise in Budapest is between

  • April-May and
  • September-October.

At this period, the climate tends to be temperate with pleasant temperature s both during the day and at night.

Another advantage is that there is less crowd during these months compared to summer but still you will find a pleasant mix of locals and tourists relishing the warmer weather.

This creates a vibrant atmosphere that you can absolutely absorb during your visit, especially on a Danuber river tour.

Our Sightseeing Tour on the Danube River

We took the evening boat trip with live music and dinner on a pleasant summer day.

The sightseeing ship departed from a dock near the Chain bridge at the foot of the Chain Bridge in Pest.

The Kossuth Museum Ship (or Kossuth Vénhajó) is a standing ship with a small exhibition about the 20th-century history of navigation in Hungary

grof szechenyi ship - Budapest Cruises

While the ship was gliding through the greyish foams of the river – contrary to the title of the Strauss waltz, The Blue Danube, it rarely is that colour- we had a tasty dinner with a glass of wine and enjoyed the breathtaking view basking in the golden light of the setting sun.

We’ve always known – and many tourists, travel websites, blogs, magazines agree – that Budapest is one of the most beautiful cities in the world but we tend to forget it living and working here day by day.

Budapest night panoram on river danube

This river tour reminded us of this fact and we were really enchanted by the

  • striking view of the many monuments lit up after dusk,
  • romantic ambience created by the gently rocking ship,
  • magical melodies of the gypsy music (only on tours starting at 19.00) and
  • fine food. (The wine and champagne also helped.)

The river bisects the city into two different parts:

  • the hilly and more peaceful Buda on the right side,
  • and the buzzing Pest on the left.

The Parliament

Both river banks offer many sights : right at the start of the sightseeingcruise the graceful tower of the Matthias Church and the Fishermen’s Bastion draw your eyes to the historic Castle District.

Further up the building of Budapest Parliament dominates the Pest shore.

Joggers do their regular rounds on the picturesque Margaret Island (Margitsziget), named after a medieval Hungarian princess.

At the north end of Margaret Island the ship turned and went down the river as far as the National Theatre at the Pest end of the Rákóczi Bridge.

The fine building of the Gresham Palace – today an exclusive luxury hotel of the Four Seasons chain – stands at the Pest end of the Chain Bridge .

The dolomite rock of the Gellért Hill towers above the water between Elizabeth Bridge (Erzsébet híd) and Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd).

The Gellért Spa and the refurbished Rudas Bath originally built by the Turks in the 16. century can also be seen at the foot of the hill.

The modern-style National Theatre marked the final attraction of our excursion on the Danube river:

8 Days Danube River Cruise

This was our first river cruise, we had been cruising with large ships for many years. We visited 7 beautiful cities and towns/village, Vienna, Durnstein, Melk, Linz, Bratislava, Budapest and Esztergom. We had walking tours to city squares, castles, and cathedrals. We joint 2 ship excursions, classical music concert in Vienna, and a night excursion in Budapest, both were very good and well worth the extra money. The cruise ship has all the basics, we were in the deluxe cabin on the middle deck, and the window can be slide opened. The room is compact, there is not much space to move around, and we had to put our luggage under the bed. The best thing on this cruise was the food, every meal is beautifully plated and delicious, also very good breakfast buffet. The staff were very nice and very helpful.

Wow! Great to get such good news and such a wonderful feedback. Looking forwrad to meet with you on our other destinations: Rhine, Volga, Moselle, Adriatic Sea and on Christmas cruises as well. Regards, Julia

we felt very comfortable and well-looked-after on the ship. The room was well-appointed and laid out with enough space to store our belongings. The food was excellent. Our compliments to the chef. The excursions were also fun and interesting. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. We look forward to taking another river cruise with Crucemundo.

MS Crucestar team and all Crucemundo team are so much happy to get such reviews - it is like music to our ears, thank you! Hope to see you again on our other ships and on our other destinations: Rhine, Volga, Nile, Moselle and Adriatic Sea. Regards, Julia

Itinerary for Budapest is a bit rush for such a big city. And the boat depart at 2am where most of the building lights are off, missing out the famous Budapest night view from boat/river. Otherwise it is a good trip.

Thank you for such a great feedback. Budapest is a really great city, we understand your feelings but here the schedule is needed to follow. Hope that in total you enjoyed the cruise and really looking forward to meet with you on one of our other destinations: Rhine, Volga, Moselle, Nile, Adriatic Sea. Regards, Julia

This was an amazing experience. Great crew.....very helpful and always thinking about the best interests of the passengers. All ports were interesting and enjoyable. Mostly sailing was done when we were asleep so we could enjoy our days touring. Boat clean and comfortable, and meals and meal choices were outstanding. The chef was clearly an experienced person. All of us were surprised at the very high quality of our meals. As potential when cooking for a large group is that it can be mediocre. Staff were responsive and fun to have around. I am looking forward to my next crucemondo cruise.

Soooo glad to get such a great feedback. We will transfer it to MS Crucestar team as well. All of us would be happy to see you again our other destinations: Rhine, Volga, Nile and Adriatic Sea. Regards, Julia

My friend and I were very happy with the Cruise. The places we visited were fabulous and the local guides were very knowledgeable. The food on the ship as well as the lunches provided ashore were great. The cabins were more than adequate and the staff very helpful. My only complaint would be that the bar area which was used for after dinner music was far too small to accommodate the large number of guests who wanted to attend. The violinist was so good everyone wanted to be there to hear her play. The cruise that we were on had only 11 English speaking guests and we had our own guide everywhere we went. I would happily recommend this cruise.

Dear Pauline, Sooo great to hear from you! Thank you for the feedback, we really appreciate your opinion and would be more than happy to see you again onboard one of our cruises! Kinds regards, Julia

Overall I was very satisfied with the cruise on Donau, although I think the changes caused by the low waterlevel in the river could have been tackled better by the norwegian guide as well as the company. The long bustrips on the two first days were rather meaningless to me - and I did not take part in the first one. I am sure better alternatives could have been dug out with sime more imagination. I think also a compensation in the form of extra wine or drinks free of charge would have been much appreciated by the guests and showed that the company really cared. The service on board was good although the selection of drinks in the bar was very narrow and it was difficult to find a decent scotch whisky except for the Chivas Regal. The used plates on the lunch and dinner tables were also taken away before everybody at the table had finished their course. That is not considered as good practice in Europe. The ship seemed nice and clean, and the staff was nice and polite. I loved the Ukrainian dinner and the show performed by the staff was excellent. Special compliments to the captain for his singing performance. Some of the visits ashore were somewhat short and stressful, and it might have been an idea to add 1 or 2 days more to cruise. After all this was my second cruise with your company and I may definitely return on another occasion.

Thank you for the feedback, we really appreciate your opinion. Also, we thank you for all the details that will help us to improve the quality of our services. We would be more than happy to see you again onboard one of our cruises! Kinds regards, Julia

'You're not fighting the crowds' in Europe when you visit on a river cruise

donau dinner cruise

Europe has no shortage of marquee tourist hot spots , but Diamond Meadows’ first river cruise there didn’t include them.

The 28-year-old graduate student took a cruise along the Rhine and Moselle rivers that took her to cities like Koblenz and Trier in Germany (she supplemented the sailing with train travel around Austria, Switzerland and elsewhere).

Meadows was traveling with her mom and her mom’s boss, who uses a wheelchair. The group chose the CroisiEurope Cruises sailing for the ease of sailing with a mobility device . But she discovered other upsides.

“It takes you exactly into the heart of the city,” said Meadows, who is based in Tennessee. Their roughly 160-guest vessel offered convenient drop-offs in smaller destinations, allowing them “to access so much more.”

Many European destinations were packed with tourists last summer . But river cruises in the continent can offer a more laid-back way to travel with small ships visiting a mix of popular and less-crowded ports.

Are river cruises better than ocean cruises?

Jen Campbell Boles, founder of the travel agency Explore More Family Travel, said that while cruising in general is a “great value for seeing Europe,” river sailings are particularly immersive. “One quote we always use in the travel industry is, ‘Ocean cruise liners take you to the destination, river cruises take us through the destination,’” she said.

Passengers visit not only major cities but also quaint villages and often disembark within walking distance of attractions. When they are done exploring, they return to a ship with an average of 150 guests.

“It's more intimate, it's cozier,” said Campbell Boles. “You're not fighting the crowds, obviously.”

That was part of the draw for Jim Jones, 57, who took Avalon Waterways river cruises with his wife in 2011 and 2014.

“The smaller cities were an attraction,” said Jones, who is based in Phoenix and works for a software company. He enjoyed visiting Avignon in the south of France, for example, which was once the seat of the papacy . “I’m a total history geek,” he said. On their first cruise, he recalled, “just about every town” they visited had a farmers’ market, allowing them to sample local food.

'Access to hidden-gem ports': Why this luxury yacht is the best option for beach lovers

Unlike ocean cruise ships, with their large casinos and plentiful bars, onboard “it was very relaxed and a much slower pace.”

River cruise vessels tend to have “less bells and whistles,” Campbell Boles said (though she added that guests get a more personalized experience as a result of their small size).

Adam Duckworth, president and founder of Travelmation, echoed that. He said the cruises are less about the ship than where it’s going. “This is truly an experience about itineraries.”

Are European river cruises cheaper than land-based trips?

While travelers can find land-based accommodations that are less expensive than river cruises, there are other factors to consider.

River cruises tend to bundle more costs, such as alcohol in the fare, than a mainstream ocean cruise line, Duckworth said (though exact policies vary by line). At least one excursion per day is typically included, as well, Campbell Boles added.

She said demand for Europe is still “through the roof” and land-based pricing is particularly high. “Even if you're staying in the highest category stateroom or suite, you're spending less than an equivalent hotel,” she said.

Are luxury cruise ships worth the money? We did the math for Silversea's Silver Nova.

Would you spend $14,000 on a cruise? Here's why these travelers splurged.

Transportation from one destination to another is also built into a river cruise, whereas travelers might have to take a train or make other arrangements to visit a mix of places. “I mean that really adds up in Europe, so this is a great way to see a lot more variety,” Campbell Boles said.

Passengers can also add pre- and post-cruise stays, allowing them to “get the best of both worlds.”

“What we say is that a river cruise oftentimes can be a premium product,” added Duckworth. “But for what you're experiencing – the comfort, the (lower) stress, the luxurious experience on board – we find it to be actually the best value through Europe from our experience.”

Are European river cruises kid-friendly?

Since river cruises require a certain amount of free time – most are at least seven days long – they have tended to be popular with older guests, according to Duckworth.

But in the past couple of years, he has noticed more multigenerational travel in the sector. “We're seeing grandparents bring their grandkids, we're seeing young professionals go on a river in Europe for the first time,” Duckworth said.

Some operators have offerings that are particularly well-suited to younger guests. Adventures by Disney offers river cruises with AmaWaterways, and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises has a Generations Collection .

How long should I go on a cruise?: How long and short cruises compare

Even if programming is curated with kids in mind, though, Duckworth cautioned that river cruise vessels don’t offer the same breadth of amenities as large ocean ships. “If your kids want to go to a waterpark and they want to go on a FlowRider and they want to play putt-putt all day, there are great lines for you, but a European river cruise is probably not one of them currently,” he said.

Some lines also don’t allow kids or have varying age requirements, so it’s important to do some research beforehand.

For those going for the first time, Campbell Boles suggested starting with a cruise on the Danube or Rhine since they are “kind of the most iconic.”

“I mean, it’s Europe,” she added. “It’s going to be great no matter what river you go on.”
