American Symphony Itineraries

American symphony review, review of american symphony.

The 2022-built MS American Symphony cruise ship is the fifth newbuild in the American Cruise Lines ' "Modern Riverboat" fleet.

From this class/with the same design are the sisterships American Song (2018), American Harmony (2019), American Jazz (2020),  American Melody  (2021),  American Serenade  (2023).

American Symphony is identified by an IMO number 9901702 and is USA-flagged (MMSI 368261060).

In mid-June 2021, ACL signed with Chesapeake Shipbuilding the contract for constructing two more units (5th and 6th) of the "Modern Riverboat" series. Both ships (Symphony and Serenade) were slated for inauguration in 2022, growing the company's fleet to 15 vessels (5x small, 4x paddle-wheelers, 6x modern riverboats). ACL also announced plans to continue building small ships (100-190-passenger) designed for USA coastal itineraries.

History - construction and ownership

The shipowner American Cruise Lines (ACL) is the USA's largest river cruise company (headquarters in Guilford Connecticut) operational since 1991. The company specializes in cruise shipping on the USA's largest navigable inland waterways (rivers and lakes) as well as in cruises along the US East Coast, US West Coast and Florida. All ACL vessels feature some of the industry's largest passenger cabins with private balconies, spacious lounges and outdoor deck spaces, gourmet cuisine, top-quality enrichment program with many complimentary land tours and excursions, highly-personalized service by all-American staff and crew.

All ACL cruise ships are USA- flagged and built by the company-owned Chesapeake Shipbuilding Yard in Salisbury (Maryland USA).

Unlike anything seen before along American waterways, the innovative vessel brings a new dimension to river cruising in the United States. American Symphony integrates contemporary design without sacrificing the comfort that American Cruise Lines is popular for. Quieter, wider, and faster than any other river ship, it is the most environmentally friendly in the industry.

Traditionally for large-sized USA riverboats, American Symphony has a fore-located boarding ramp (bow-location on Deck 1) that allows passengers to go ashore at any place along the ACL's cruisetour itinerary. The ramp has an innovative design being constructed as a retractable gangway (passenger bridge). The technology is often implemented on some of the largest ferries and features an opening bow door.

MS American Symphony cruise ship (ACL)

While other small cruise lines repurpose old casino ships, American Cruise Lines decided to build brand new boats to maintain the company's reputation for premium quality and services. Each of the newbuilds features the most innovative design, spacious indoor and outdoor areas. Each vessel is a traditional USA-built (at Chesapeake Shipbuilding in Salisbury Maryland), as well as American-flagged and crewed.

Decks and Cabins

American Symphony staterooms (91 total) are all outside, some of the industry's biggest, all with full-size bathrooms, private step-out balconies, modern hotel amenities.

All staterooms are with step-out balconies. The smallest are the Studios (single-occupancy cabins for solo travelers) sized 250 ft2 (23 m2). Cabin sizes range between 275-315-350-370 ft2 (26-29-33-34 m2), balcony size included. Veranda Suites are sized 405 ft2 (38 m2). The largest accommodations are the Grand Suites (650 ft2 / 60 m2) and feature top-deck locations (forward on Deck 4), separate bedroom/living room, spacious terrace (with alfresco dining area).

The boat has 5 passenger-accessible decks , of which 4 are with cabins.

Shipboard facilities and amenities

MS American Symphony features innovative interior design concepts - from the 4-story glass-walled Vestibule (Atrium) to spacious indoor and outdoor lounges, large open-deck spaces, floor-ceiling windows throughout the vessel. The 4-deck Vestibule has floor-ceiling windows (portside and starboard) and a SkyLight (transparent glass-roof cover) that allows natural light into the ship's interior.

Two Sun Deck is fitted with sunbathing and shaded seating areas, but unlike the bigger sisterships, it lacks the deck-games area (with Putting Green and Shuffleboard). The ship has 6 lounges (3 with outdoor terraces), Grand Dining Room (complimentary, glass-enclosed restaurant), Chart Room & Library, fore-located Main Lounge (with a central stage for live shows and musical productions, and with a glass-roof cover), aft-located Sky Lounge (with glass-roof cover and access to an alfresco dining terrace/Ellipse Cafe), Fitness Room (indoor Gym), Yog Studio (for group classes and private lessons).

The Sun Deck (top-deck) is furnished with plenty of outdoor furniture - padded sun loungers, padded wicker sofas and deckchairs, 2-seat and 4-seat tables, live plants. The Sundeck has all 3x large-sized shaded seating areas (covered by retractable canopies) and 2x SkyLights (glass roof covers) over the Sky Lounge (aft) and the Atrium/Vestibule (midship-portside).

The list of the American Symphony ship's main public venues includes:

  • (Deck 1) Boarding Ramp/bow, Vestibule/lobby level, Ship's Office, Dining Room Restaurant, Galley/Kitchen & Storage Rooms, Staff & Crew cabins/forward
  • (Deck 2) Bow Terrace/observation area with seating, Lyric Lounge/midship-starboard, wellness facilities/aft (Yoga Studio, Fitness Room/indoor Gym)
  • (Deck 3) River Lounge/forward, with a wraparound terrace, The Study & Library/midship-starboard
  • (Deck 4) Pilothouse/Wheelhouse, High Note Lounge/midship-starboard, Sky Lounge (indoor, aft), Ellipse Cafe (aft, outdoor terrace serving as an alfresco dining venue)
  • (Deck 5) Sun Deck with plenty of outdoor seating (premium patio furniture)

Two Lifts (passenger elevators in the Atrium) connect all decks.

Deck 4's fore-located River Lounge is the main lounge with floor-ceiling windows and glass-roof cover. It also serves as the boat's show lounge with a central stage, grand piano, ample comfortable seating (comfy armchairs and plush sofas). Here are served warm cookies starting at 10 am. The complimentary Afternoon Tea service (with fresh pastries) is at 3:30 pm. The free-drinks cocktail hour is at 5:30 pm. Root beer and ice cream are passed around during the evening show. The evening entertainment includes one show (beginning at 8:15 pm) lasting about 1 hour. The show program could be a live concert, solo performances, music tribute, themed music, movie trivia. The large space for the evening shows is in the room's center. Furniture is daily rearranged (sometimes 2 or 3 times a day) to suit the themed entertainment. This is also the place for the American Cruise Lines' enrichment program, consisting of differently-themed lectures (history, food and wine, literature, etc). Also hosted here are media presentations and the current ACL cruise itinerary and tours-related multimedia presentations and port talks.

Deck 4's aft-located Sky Lounge is an indoor venue with premium furniture, floor-ceiling and wall-to-wall windows (allowing 270-degree views), glass-roof cover (SkyLight) and direct access to an open-air Terrace (Ellipse Cafe). Throughout the day, there are served beverages, snacks, freshly-baked cookies, pastries, beverages. Sky Lounge's opening glass doors allow it to expand by including the furnished Terrace/Ellipse Cafe. Throughout the day, the Cafe's Bar serves complimentary water, soda, light snacks. Complimentary Afternoon Tea service is available between 3:30-4:30 pm. In the evening, there is a cocktail hour with free drinks.

Sky Lounge's Ellipse Cafe's staff serve the entire Sun Deck (relaxation and sunbathing top-deck area) with drinks and snacks.

The improved ship design of the Modern Riverboat series allows "bow landings" via a retractable and rotating gangway (passenger bridge) that extends from Main Deck (deck 1) to the dock or directly onto the river bank. This feature is available on all traditional-design US paddlewheel riverboats and provides expanded options for river cruise itineraries unmatched by most newbuild river cruise ships .

The boat has a modern propulsion system consisting of 2x azimuth thrusters ("Z-drives") manufactured by Veth (Holland). These 360-degree rotating propellers (1x forward, 1x aft) provide the boat with greater maneuverability and berthing flexibility.

The ship is powered by 2x Caterpillar marine engines running on low-sulfur diesel. These modern engines require less fuel and produce fewer emissions (COx, NOx, SOx) and soot particles in comparison to other boats on the US river cruising market.

American Cruise Line's "Modern Riverboats" are all constructed at Chesapeake Shipbuilding (shipyard in Salisbury MA). During the launch ceremonies, the vessel's hull is floated out from drydock into Wicomico River, then positioned in the shipyard's East Outfitting Basin to receive the superstructure (upper decks) and final outfitting.

The vessel was launched/floated out from drydock on March 10, 2022, and is currently planned for inauguration in August 2022. The name (American Symphony) was officially announced by ACL during the American Melody 's delivery on August 3, 2021.

American Symphony's first Master was Gregg Scheiferstein (Captain since 1988, with ACL since 2010).

American Symphony left Salisbury on August 5, 2022, and successfully completed the sea trials on Aug 6-7 while en route to Port NOLA (arriving on Aug 11th). The christening ceremony was held on August 30th (in Natchez MS ) during the Maiden Voyage out of New Orleans/Port NOLA (departure on Aug 27th).

The Inaugural Cruise (Aug 27, 2022) left Port NOLA with a small-scale dockside ceremony attended by Brandy DeVelbiss Christian (Port NOLA's President and CEO) and Charles B. Robertson (ACL's President and CEO, who succeeded ACL's founder Charles A. Robertson /1948-2020).

The official naming ceremony (Aug 30th) in Natchez was led by Godmother Asya Danielle Branch (1998-born beauty pageant titleholder/Miss Mississippi 2018, Miss USA 2020). The special event was attended by Jonathon Tate Reeves (Republican, Mississippi's 65th Governor), Delbert Hosemann (Mississippi's 33rd Lieutenant Governor), Buz Craft (Vidalia's Mayor), Dan Gibson (Natchez's Mayor), Charles B. Robertson, and other ACL officials and VIP guests.

During the boat's naming, Asya Branch was joined by Cynthia and Denise Patterson as honored guests. Both sisters, together with their late mother had traveled 28 times/voyages with ACL.

President Abraham Lincoln summarized Vicksburg’s importance clearly when he said, “Vicksburg is the key. The war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket… They can defy us from Vicksburg… As valuable as New Orleans will be to us, Vicksburg will be more so.” Several other excursion options are available, including exploring museums and historic sites with local expert guides or on your own. 5 Natchez, MS Day 4 - Natchez, MS In Natchez, grand homes sparkle like jewels, adorning the bluffs that tower above the river. Since 1716, when the French first built a fort here among the Natchez Indians, the town has grown to boast elaborate mansions built by planters in the 1800s to flaunt their wealth. With no Civil War fighting here, Natchez still features hundreds of antebellum homes and buildings. Each of these architectural treasures has its own story to tell, creating a charming downtown that embodies the essence of southern charm and hospitality. Explore on your own or enjoy an array of curated, guided explorations. Tour the elaborate townhomes, visit a working cotton farm to learn about the crop’s importance in history and today, and discover the historic Under-The-Hill Saloon. Drift through quaint shops, nibble on local delights, and enjoy the expansive views of the majestic river valley from the bluff-top park.

6 St. Francisville, LA As the bow-ramp from the ship opens and stretches to the shore, you will be welcomed into the historic cotton port of St. Francisville. Overlooking the river from atop a high, St. Francisville began as a part of Spanish West Florida in the early 1800s until American settlers overthrew the Spanish governing forces, and the region later became part of the United States. Experience this town’s rich history on your own or with a variety of guided excursions. As you explore, discover the Historic District which boasts magnificent mansions and unique boutique shops and admire cottonwood trees which transition to stately oaks adorned with Spanish moss.

7 Baton Rouge, LA Meaning “red stick,” Baton Rouge’s 1699 French name references an ancient geographical marker and reflects the city’s long history. As Louisiana’s state capital, the city still echoes with tales of the characters who lived here, most notably Governor and Senator Huey P. Long. Learn about his dramatic career at the magnificent 1852 Old State Capitol Museum and visit Long’s 1932 State Capitol building, an architectural marvel of granite and marble. Explore many of the well-known downtown neighborhoods, while embracing the rich art, architecture, and nature along the route. If you feel adventurous, take a narrated boat ride through a Louisiana swamp.

8 Houmas House, LA Step off your ship docked right at Houmas House and explore one of the most elaborately renovated of the grand homes along the river, once a private home and a thriving historical agricultural enterprise. Entertaining and knowledgeable guides will escort you through the magnificently restored home’s unmatched collection of stunning period furnishings and artwork. The ornately landscaped grounds include 38 acres of gardens, fountains, and majestic live oak trees. Later, experience the opulence and natural wonder of the Oak Alley estate with its breathtaking parallel row of 28 ancient and massive live oak trees. Here, you can savor a complimentary taste of one of the best mint juleps in the South.

9 New Orleans, LA New Orleans is worth some extra time. Enjoy a feast for your senses if you linger in this magical city, renowned for its delicious cuisine, vibrant music scene, and rich culture with an international flair. Stroll the tree-lined avenues, take a carriage ride through the French Quarter, hop aboard a streetcar to the gorgeous Garden District, or visit the renowned National World War II Museum. If departing the ship in New Orleans, enjoy available city excursions and motorcoach transfers to the airport. Or extend your stay to further explore the delights of the Big Easy.

Cruiseable team

On a cruise ship, cruiseclout score: 95.0, american symphony: modern sightseeing on the mississippi.

The 175-passenger American Symphony launched in August 2022 and offers historic sightseeing along the Mississippi River. The ship features an updated modern interior design to complement its spacious all-balcony staterooms, numerous lounges and public spaces with panoramic views. Its focal point is an impressive four-story glass atrium at the center of the ship.

American Cruise Lines is known for its roomy accommodations, and here they range from 250 to 650 square feet and have full-size bathrooms, spacious closets and private balconies where you can enjoy complimentary room service during breakfast each day. The new ship also features a forward-facing observation lounge, fitness center and yoga studio.

While other small cruise lines repurpose old casino ships, American Cruise Lines tossed out the idea of traditional paddlewheel boats and built a fleet from the ground up. The result is a ship that will be quieter, wider and faster than other river ships — and also among the most environmentally friendly in the industry, the cruise line says.

Where American Symphony sails

American Symphony features 7- to 21-night sailings on the Mississipi, along with the occasional 10 Night Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Land Tour and forays along the Tennessee River.

The Best Mississippi River Cruises to Discover America's Heartland

By Jackie Sheckler Finch

Image may contain Boat Transportation Vehicle Land Nature Outdoors Plant Vegetation Tree Woodland and Water

The luxury ships and historic tours are nice, yes. But the real star of Mississippi River cruises has always been the river. There’s nothing quite so Americana as getting to know the many personalities of this 2,350-mile stretch, flowing from northern Minnesota’s Lake Itasca through 10 states until it reaches Louisiana , where the Mississippi River Delta gives way to the Gulf of Mexico.

The slow, meandering journeys of Mississippi River cruises have long proven an ideal way to discover the distinct stories of America’s heartland. In the words of Mark Twain (which no Mississippi River story would be complete without), the towns and cities located on the mighty river's shores are “cheering to the spirit” and “reposeful as a dreamland,” with “nothing to hang a fret or a worry upon.”

The challenge modern travelers now face is when, where, and how to go about this iconic American voyage . Below, see our answers to these frequently asked questions, plus our favorite Mississippi River cruises to book in 2024.

Which cruise lines do Mississippi River cruises?

After American Queen Voyages shut down in February, only two Mississippi River cruise lines currently remain in operation.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary, American Cruise Lines (ACL) has a fleet of more than 20 American-built ships sailing across the country and remains family-owned and American-crewed. ACL offers a Mississippi River fleet of three luxurious 180-passenger modern riverboats– American Melody , American Symphony , and American Serenade —plus two classic paddlewheel ships, the 180-passenger American Splendor and the 150-passenger American Heritage.

The new kid on the Mississippi is the Viking Mississippi, a 386-passenger, five-deck vessel that first set sail in September 2022. The cutting-edge cruise is Viking’s first foray in the US, adding to their fleet of more than 90 ocean, river, and expedition vessels navigating the world’s seven continents.

What is the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise?

For an 8- or 9-day cruise, the average cost of a Mississippi River cruise is around $4,000 per person in a stateroom. Although prices might seem high initially, many of these cruises include extras that aren’t always complimentary on ocean cruises such as free WiFi, at least one free shore excursion in every port, paid port taxes and fees, and a pre-cruise hotel stay. Viking offers complimentary beer, wine, and soft drinks with onboard lunch and dinner. Meanwhile, American Cruise Lines offers complimentary beer, wine, cocktails, and soft drinks. Gratuities are also included in American Cruise Lines fares.

What is the best time of year to go on a river cruise?

Spring (late March through mid-June) and autumn (September through November) are the best times of year to go on a river cruise in the US. Spring blossoms add a colorful touch to the shoreline, and you can never go wrong with autumn foliage. The temperatures are mild, if not pleasantly cool, and passengers are eager to welcome a new spring travel season—or to enjoy one last autumn river adventure before winter arrives.

What month is best for a Mississippi River cruise?

If we had to pick just one, September is the best month for a Mississippi River cruise. The weather is usually mild with less likelihood of rain, and autumn colors are beginning to paint the shoreline. Keep in mind, however, that the Mississippi is the fourth largest river in the world—so temperatures any time of year are not going to be the same in warmer Louisiana as they are in cooler Minnesota.

Below, see our favorite Mississippi River cruises to book in 2024, featuring stops in iconic American cities like Nashville , Memphis , and New Orleans .

22-day Mississippi River Odyssey: New Orleans to Red Wing, Minnesota

Enjoy the charms of America’s great river on a journey aboard the Viking Mississippi from New Orleans to Red Wing, departing September 20. Custom built to sail American waters, the vessel features river-facing staterooms with either French or step-out balconies.

Stops include Baton Rouge and St. Francisville in Louisiana; Natchez, Vicksburg, Greenville, and Rosedale in Mississippi; Memphis in Tennessee; Paducah in Kentucky; Cape Girardeau, St. Louis, and Hannibal in Missouri; Burlington, Quad Cities, and Dubuque in Iowa; La Crosse in Wisconsin; and ending in Red Wing, Minnesota.

With so many fascinating shore excursions to choose from, it’s well worth taking time to tour the St. Louis Arch . Opened in 1965, the monument to America’s westward expansion is far more than just a stunning photo by the riverside. Venture underground between the arch legs for a museum. Climb aboard a tram to be transported 630 feet up to the top of America’s tallest monument for some stunning views.

12-day Heart of the Delta: Memphis to New Orleans

The 386-guest Viking Mississippi spans five decks, making it one of the largest passenger vessels on the Mississippi. Inaugurated in 2022, the ship features a modern Scandinavian design with an infinity pool and a two-story Explorers’ Lounge observation area similar to its ocean ships. Directly in front of the Explorer’s Lounge is an expanded outdoor seating area known as The Bow. Three restaurants serve both Southern regional cuisine and international favorites.

The cruise starts in Memphis on November 14 and includes stops in Rosedale, Greenville, Vicksburg, and Natchez in Mississippi as well as St. Francisville, Baton Rouge, and Darrow in Louisiana, ending in New Orleans. The “Mississippi Sings the Blues” shore excursion visits iconic sites along the Mississippi Blues Trail such as historic Dockery Farms, considered the “birthplace of the blues.”

The tour stops in Clarksdale, the fabled “Crossroads” where legend says blues great Robert Johnson reputedly sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his guitar prowess. Stops at the GRAMMY Museum Mississippi and the Delta Blues Museum completes this perfect trip for music lovers.

Nashville TN

12-day Mississippi River Gateway Cruise: New Orleans to St. Louis

From the French Quarter in New Orleans to the towering Gateway Arch in St. Louis , this American Heritage cruise lives up to its name. Inaugurated in 2015 and totally redecorated in 2022, the 84-cabin American Heritage is the perfect vessel for this interesting itinerary, its design reminiscent of the days when steamboat paddlewheelers plied the Mississippi in the 1800s.

The 12-day voyage departs from New Orleans on July 2. Ports of call along the way include Baton Rouge in Louisiana; Natchez and Vicksburg in Mississippi; Memphis in Tennessee; and Paducah in Kentucky . An onboard expert shares tales of the importance of steam-driven paddlewheels in establishing riverfront communities along the great Mississippi River.

Step ashore in Natchez and enjoy a cold drink at the Under-the-Hill-Saloon, once one of the rowdiest establishments on the Mississippi River in the 1800s. Legend says that Mark Twain stopped here when he was just another riverman named Samuel Clemens.

At Houmas House, see the bedroom where Bette Davis stayed to film the 1964 movie Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte . Joan Crawford was the intended co-star but Bette and Joan feuded so Joan quit and Olivia de Havilland replaced her.

Launched in 2021, the five-deck American Melody has 91 staterooms, all with private balconies and full-length sliding glass doors. The ship has several spacious lounges, a fitness center, large dining room, café for casual dining, sun deck, library, and an impressive four-story glass atrium in the center of the ship. Things to Do

Subscriber only, travel | american cruise lines, a viking competitor, sails the newly-built american symphony into red wing on friday.

Photo of the American Symphony cruise ship.

JoAnn Funk, a longtime jazz pianist at the St. Paul Hotel lobby bar, climbed aboard an American Cruise Lines ship in 2012 with her husband, fellow Twin Cities entertainer Steven Marking, and the two have never really left.

On Monday, they were in Davenport, Iowa, enjoying the hotel-like accommodations of the newly-constructed American Symphony, a five-deck, 175-passenger cruise ship that began plying the waters of the Mississippi River in August.

With Funk and Marking — who both grew up as self-described “river rats” in La Crosse, Wis. — providing on-board daily lectures about the history and infrastructure of the nation’s most iconic river, as well as river-inspired variety shows three nights per week, the Symphony departed New Orleans in early September and was scheduled to dock in Winona, Minn., earlier this week.

On Friday, the Symphony will complete its inaugural arrival in Red Wing, Minn. It will head back south the next day.

‘SO CURIOUS ABOUT THE RIVER’

All in all, the “Complete Mississippi River Cruise” experience will be a 22-day adventure for Funk, Marking and a boatload of passengers aboard American Cruise Lines’ longest voyage.

“We have first-time cruisers. We have people who have been around the world,” said Funk, in a phone call from Davenport on Monday. “But everyone is so curious about the river.”

In 2023, the 30-year-old company — the nation’s largest domestic cruise provider — expects to maintain 17 small ships and riverboats exploring 34 states. Like the Symphony, which was christened on Aug. 30 in Natchez, Miss., five of those relatively compact, modern passenger boats have been custom-built since 2018 for the Mississippi River by Chesapeake Shipbuilding, the Connecticut company’s Maryland-based shipbuilder.

Three of its ships currently travel the Upper Mississippi, including the 175-passenger Melody, which hit water for the first time last year and began transporting visitors the length of the river in August 2021. A sixth ship, the American Serenade, sets sail in 2023. Each represents a break with the classic paddle-wheeler more common to the river.

“We’re embracing both styles,” said Alexa Paolella, a public relations manager for the cruise company. “It’s built with a lot more use of glass, which has really enhanced the views. We’re giving people a choice.”

The company’s U.S. fleet has more than doubled in size in the past five years alone, reflective in part of the country’s changing demographics. By the year 2035, the U.S. is expected to be home to 77 million seniors age 65 and over, a core demographic for cruise companies. Seniors will finally outnumber the 76.5 million children under age 18, according to the U.S. Census Bureau .

American Cruise Lines ships haven’t docked in St. Paul since 2018, but they’re still visible along the St. Paul stretch of the waterway, and their guests stay at the St. Paul Hotel and visit other St. Paul destinations before boarding in Red Wing, Paolella said.

“St. Paul is very much a part of all our Upper Mississippi cruises and has been for 10 years now,” she said.

GROWING CRUISE COMPETITION

If American Cruise Lines is investing in the Mississippi River experience, where it now hosts 10 different travel packages along the upper and lower river, it isn’t alone.

The Viking Mississippi, a 386-passenger luxury ship custom-built for the river by Viking River Cruises, began its inaugural trip from St. Paul to St. Louis , Mo., on Sept. 3, which was followed by a departure from St. Paul to New Orleans on Sept. 17 . Not all the sailing has been smooth, as some Viking customers who booked two years or more in advance have complained of last-minute cancellations apparently due to staffing and supply chain challenges, as well as construction delays.

Funk said a key difference between Viking and American Cruise Lines is that in addition to smaller, more intimate passenger limits, the boats allow children. “Sometimes a granddaughter will travel with a grandmother,” she said. “We had an entire family book a whole floor so the cousins could play with the cousins. It’s pretty neat. Everyone is welcoming.”

Cruise companies have also discovered Duluth and the Great Lakes. Minnesota Public Radio reported in mid-September that after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, nine ships sailed the Great Lakes this year, representing four different companies, including Viking, which sailed into Duluth for the first time this year with the Viking Octantis.

Nearly 20,000 passengers are expected to travel on the Lakes by the end of the year, up more than 25 percent from 2019.

Viking is also looking at adding trips from Duluth to Toronto, according to MPR, and ultimately from Duluth to the Panama Canal and even Antarctica.

With so much interest in riverboat-style cruises, will competitors begin to crowd each other? Given that tickets are selling out as much as two years in advance, that’s not likely to happen just yet.
