Zanzibar is a truly wonderful island that offers some of the finest tropical beaches within Africa. The name itself has captivated travellers imagination over the years and certainly lives up to expectations. Alongside the idyllic, crystal clear sea and vibrant reefs, excellent for diving, the island has a rich cultural and historical offering, particularly within the old Stone Town.
Further Insight On Zanzibar
Zanzibar is a great post safari destination with some glorious Indian Ocean beaches, a rich culture and some excellent places to stay. Easy connecting flights can take you from a safari in the Maasai Mara, northern Tanzania, Nyerere or Ruaha in just a few hours. It is realistic to have a early morning game drive in your chosen reserve, and have a sea dip and sundowners on the beach the same day.
Zanzibar is less developed than other Indian Ocean islands, and this allows you find some smaller boutique lodges offering a true African experience. However, there are also resort-style hotels, and amongst these, one or two we like that offer a wider choice of activities and are often more suitable for families.
The Zanzibar archipelago’s turquoise seas are as stunning below as above the water line allowing for some magnificent snorkelling and diving. Manta rays, green turtles, hawksbill plus barracudas add to the array of colour with opportunities for wall dives nearer Pemba.
Stonetown is the island’s ancient capital which has a history as colourful as its spice markets, and is definitely recommended for a day out or to spend a night or two. It was a major hub of the slave trade in its day and even the birthplace of Freddy Mercury, and it’s easy to explore on foot in an afternoon. Hiring a local guide will definitely help you make the most of your time here.
There are some charming town house style hotels here on its narrow alleys, many with rooftop restaurants where you can toast the sunset. The souvenir shopping and dining here is good.
Zanzibar has seen a growth in visitor numbers in recent years but fortunately has remained relatively unspoiled or exploited. To really enjoy your time on the island it is important to find the right style and character of accommodation to suit you. The range is broad from large mainstream resorts to small exclusive hideaways; busy “backpackers” beach huts to private boutique guesthouses.

Many thanks for a truly great holiday! Nyerere National Park was a great success as we saw the wild dogs on 2 occasions and some great lion kills. In fact we saw a pride of 10 lion including cubs within 10 mins of landing in the Nyerere National Park! Zanzibar was wonderful! The sunshine hotel was beautiful and the staff were lovely.
Andrew Morton
The welcome and kindness and generosity we have received, in all of our camps and stops has been tremendous. Although we have both travelled a lot over our years together, we both agree this holiday has been outstanding, and one of the best experiences of our lives.

Tailor-made Zanzibar Holidays
Exotic spices fill the air in Zanzibar, a wonder of white sands and UNESCO World Heritage towns draped in sea-faring history. Off its famed shores, the fluttering sails of Arabian dhows skim across the surface of the Indian Ocean, which hides treasures beneath: elegant sea turtles and swarms of tropical fish. The boats are propelled by trade and monsoon winds that, for centuries, have brought explorers from all over the world to Zanzibar. Settlers from Arabia, Africa, Persia and India have made the island home, carving a living from fishing or farming the fertile soils, which are planted with fragrant cloves, vanilla and nutmeg.
Baskets piled high with these heady spices fill the shops in Stone Town, Zanzibar’s ancient capital, where mosques sound eerily-beautiful calls to prayer. Get lost in winding streets lined with merchant houses with carved teak doors, stumbling upon the sultan’s House of Wonders and a sobering former slave market. History pangs sated, it’s time to sink onto the soft sands of Zanzibar’s world-famous beaches and watch the buttery sun dissolve into the depths of the ocean. As evening falls, head to the Forodhani night market where stalls buckle under the weight of seafood kebabs and piles of samosas, while smiling vendors fry Zanzibar pizza and serve up freshly-squeezed sugarcane juice.
A beach break in Zanzibar is the perfect, relaxing end to an action-packed safari in Tanzania, so speak to our Africa experts about booking a stay on this coveted spice island.
