Routing spark plug wires? Where to - to which one?

  • Add to quote

I bought an 06 3.8L at auction and it's ruuning pretty rough - it has new spark plug wires but they seem possibly mis-routed? I compared them to my 05 3.3L and the back side routing is definately different between the two. Should it be? I've got a Haynes manual but haven't found the layout - facing the engine - I'm thinking from right to left (1 to 3) -- far right plugs and wires being #1 front or back and far left plugs and wires being #3. Any help? If you'd like to use the proper order to explain - any help is appreciated! Thanks.

look here: http://www.aa1car.com/library/chrysler_firing_orders.htm

Thanks for the info - I see the correct plug #'s or firing order but which wires go to which one? Does the 3.3L have the same routing as the 3.8L? If so I know the 3.8 I just bought is routed wrong on the back side. With 1,3,5 for firing order on back side - if coil wires were labeled 1,2,3 from left to right which wire goes where? Thanks again

voyager 3.3 firing order

On my 2005, if you brush the dust off the top of the ignition coil pack, you can actually see the numbers by each terminal. If I recall, the terminals pointed toward the front of the vehicle are ordered in a way that "makes sense" to me (2, 4, 6, I think). The terminals pointed toward the rear were not that way (3, 1, 5, I think). Anyway, brush the dust off and see if there are labels there and perhaps that will help. Nate

Check the pictures in my thread, it shows that the coil terminal correspond to layout of the cylinders. http://forum.chryslerminivan.net/showthread.php/12877-Tune-up-on-3.8L Alex...

Dodge 3.6 firing order [+ Diagram]

In this article, we’ll explore the importance and specifics of the firing order for the Dodge 3.6 Pentastar engine, a powerhouse in the Dodge, Chrysler, and Jeep fleets since 2011.

3.6 Engine Firing Order Sequence

Table of Contents

The Dodge 3.6 engine firing order is 1,2,3,4,5,6. This means that the spark plug in cylinder one fires first, followed by the spark plug in cylinder two, then three, and so on until the last cylinder, which is six.

Dodge 3.6 Pentastar Firing Order Diagram

dodge 3.6 engine firing order diagram

In-depth Look at the Pentastar 3.6L Engine

The Pentastar 3.6 engine is one of the most popular engines that is used in a wide range of Dodge and Chrysler and Jeep vehicles. This engine first debuted in 2011 and is still the go-to engine for Dodge and Chrysler vehicles.

What makes this engine unique and special is the fact that it is an all-aluminum, 24-valve, dual overhead camshaft engine. which is designed for both reliability and power (305 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque).

The Pentastar 3.6 is a V-6 engine that can be found in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, depending on your model.

Why Is the Correct Firing Order Crucial for Your Dodge 3.6 Engine?

Now that I have explained what the correct firing order is, it’s time to dive into why it is so important for your Dodge 3.6 engine.

If you have ever heard of a “backfire” in an internal combustion engine, this is when one of the fuel-air mixtures ignites before the spark plug fires.

This can happen when there is a misfire and can cause serious damage to your vehicle.

An incorrect firing order can cause engine backfires, misfires, rough idling, loss of power when accelerating, and extreme engine vibrations.

To summarize, the firing order plays a crucial role in the engine’s performance.

It ensures that the engine runs smoothly and efficiently by ensuring that the right amount of fuel and air is delivered to the right cylinder at the right time.

A misfiring spark plug or a problem with the firing order can lead to poor engine performance and decreased fuel efficiency.

Firing Order Table

This table associates the position of each cylinder with its respective moment in the firing sequence

Practical Tips

To verify the firing order of your Pentastar 3.6 engine, begin by locating the ignition coils and spark plugs on the engine.

You can easily follow the wiring from the coils to the corresponding plugs, ensuring they match the 1-2-3-4-5-6 sequence.

Preventive Maintenance

Regular engine checks can prevent firing order mishaps. Always inspect spark plug wires for wear and tear, and replace ignition components according to the service intervals specified in your owner’s manual.

Troubleshooting If you experience rough idling or misfires, check the firing order as part of your diagnostic process.

An engine code reader can help indicate which cylinder is misfiring, guiding you to the potential issue.

Knowing the correct firing order for your Dodge 3.6 engine is essential for maintaining its performance and preventing damage. By following the guidelines provided, you can ensure that your engine remains a reliable source of power for your vehicle.

I have had replace almost everything on this Dodge Ram 1500 3.6, I replaced PCV valve, oil and coolant housing, all six spark plugs and coils, I take it into AutoZone last week and put it on a machine they told me number 5 spark plug is misfiring I replace that last week and this week something happens again and now they gave me a print out and it say’s 5 is misfiring every week it is something different, I am so sick and tired of this truck already.

So tell me why is your firing order confusing? why is there an 8 on your firing order when there is 6 spark plugs.

' src=

Thanks a lot, this is really helpful.

Hey Arminda, Thanks for pointing this out. Just to clarify for everyone, the 8 on the diagram is supposed to be a 6 as stated in the other parts of the article. I must have missed my morning coffee lol.

Ford 3.3L (203.8 cu in) firing order — diagram & guide

Delve deep into the engineering marvel of the ford 3.3l firing order..

A man is working on a ford engine.

If you own a latest-gen F-150 or Explorer with some slight running or misfiring issues, you’ll probably need to know the Ford 3.3L (203.8 cu in) firing order . After all, it was placed as a base engine option for Ford’s production cars in 2018, and it replaced the previous 3.5-liter Duratec.

However, the firing sequence may not be as you’d expect from Ford’s V6 engine, so keep on reading as we’ll discuss the sequence and the cylinder positions in further detail.

Ford 3.3L Duratec firing order

The Ford 3.3L Duratec firing order is 1-4-2-5-3-6 and it’s the same as for other Duratec V6 engines with a similar capacity. However, it’s important to note that this is a naturally-aspirated V6, and there’s an earlier version of Ford’s 3.3-liter straight-six engine with a different firing order.

So, when you look up the 3.3L firing order, it’s easy to get confused by it and misinterpret it by replacing it with the straight-six 200 cu in engine. Don’t worry though, we’ll show you the differences in the next few sections.

Ford 3.3L straight six firing order

The firing order for Ford’s 3.3-liter straight-six is 1-5-3-6-2-4, so it’s quite different from the 3.3L Duratec engine. Also, the cylinders are arranged differently since this engine is a straight-six, and the Duratec has a V order.

It’s not so easy to mix these two up though, since the straight-six was produced back in the 60s and 70s, and the V6 is a more recent one used in the mid-2000s and 2010s.

Ford 3.3L cylinder diagram

A white tesla car with four blue buttons on it.

While the straight-six order goes from 1o to 6 in a straight line, the 3.3-liter Duratec has a different cylinder arrangement.

It has two cylinder banks, so you can see cylinders 1 to 3 on the right side, and cylinders 4 to 6 on the left side, from the perspective of the front of the engine.

Ford 3.3L vehicle applications

The 3..3-liter straight-six engine only went into the Mustang from 1968 to 1970, and the Duratec V6 was used in a whole lot of other vehicles during its production. So, here’s a complete list containing all the vehicles with Ford’s 3.3-liter 203.8 cu in engine:

  • Ford Explorer Hybrid

The engine was also used in Ford’s police interceptor vehicle from 2020 to this day, which is an interesting fact.

Well, there you have it – we’ve successfully outlined the differences between Ford’s early 70s 3.3L straight-six and the more recent 3.3-liter V6.

We hope you’ll be able to use this information to your advantage by properly taking care of the Duratec engine now that you know more about its firing order and arrangement.
