Switzerland belongs to the Schengen Area*. If you have a visa issued by a Schengen member state, you generally do not require an additional tourist visa to enter Switzerland or any other Schengen country. If you have one of the following Swiss residence permits, you do not require a visa to enter Switzerland or another Schengen country for a maximum of 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies regardless of your nationality:

There two types of visa application form .

Schengen visa for up to 90 days (Type C): This type of visa is for a stay of up to 90 days, for example for tourist purposes, to study or to participate in a cultural or sporting event. It is valid for travel throughout the Schengen Area.

If you wish to work in Switzerland, you must additionally apply for a work permit .

Long-stay visa for more than 90 days (Type D): If you wish to stay for longer than 90 days, you must apply for a Type D visa.

Submitting a visa application

You must submit a visa application to a Swiss consulate or embassy , preferably at least two months but no longer than six months before you travel.

In certain cases, you can submit your application via the online visa system .

To travel abroad from Switzerland, you must submit your visa application to the consulate or embassy of the appropriate country in Switzerland.

Additional documents

Depending on your country of origin, the Swiss consulate or embassy where you submit your visa application may request additional documents, even if you are only applying for a tourist visa. The documents may include:

Letter of invitation: The letter must be in German, French or Italian and confirm that your Swiss host (private individual or company) is expecting you. It must contain information on the length of and reason for your stay, your personal data (first name(s), surname, date of birth, nationality) and the personal data of your host. The letter must be dated and signed by your host. Further information on the letter of invitation is available in the SEM factsheet .

Declaration of sponsorship: If the Swiss consulate or embassy doubts you have sufficient financial means for your stay in Switzerland, you may have to submit a declaration of sponsorship before you are granted a visa. In this declaration, your host must confirm that they will pay for uncovered costs up to a maximum of CHF 30,000. Your host must sign the declaration and deposit it with the communal authority of his or her place of residence or with the cantonal migration authority. Travel health insurance For a short-term visa (maximum of 90 days) you must prove that you have travel health insurance that covers costs of up to EUR 30,000. The insurance policy must be with an insurance company that is recognised by the consulate or embassy processing your visa application

A visa for a child (6 to 12 years) costs EUR 45.

Visas for children under 6 are free of charge.

In certain cases, the cost of a visa may be lowered or lifted completely. The cost of a long-stay visa for more than 90 days (Type D) may be increased by 50%.

• Step 3:  Gather your Required Documents .

If online appointment scheduling is available for your country, instructions will follow. If not, you should contact your consulate/visa center directly to schedule an appointment.

• Via a Swiss consulate or embassy directly.
• Via the consulate of a Schengen state representing Swiss consular interests.
• Via an external service provider.

If you must apply directly through a Swiss embassy/consulate, you can contact them directly to establish how you should apply.

• Step 6:  Pay the application fee .
• Different Swiss consulates/processing centers have different procedures for submitting applications. In almost all cases, applications must be submitted in person to the consulate/center you are applying through.
• Alternatively, you may be able to drop off your application without prior arrangement, so long as you do so during normal operating hours.
• When you submit your application, you will likely also be asked to submit biometric data (fingerprints). Children younger than 12 years are likely exempt from having their fingerprints collected.
• Please note, after submitting your application, you may be asked to return at a later date for a personal interview to provide further information/materials related to your trip.

When to Apply

Submit your application at least 15 days prior to the day you intend to travel, and no earlier than 6 months before you leave.

Where to Apply

Applications for Schengen visas to Switzerland should be submitted by mail at either a Swiss Consulate or a visa application center that has a relationship with Switzerland.

You must lodge your application for a Swiss Schengen visa in the country where you legally reside/are a citizen.

In countries where there is no Swiss consular presence, applications may be lodged via the consulate of a Schengen state representing Swiss consular interests.

Processing Time for Switzerland Schengen Visa

The Swiss Schengen visa processing time is generally 10-15 days , although it can take longer in certain cases.

If your visa was approved:

Collect your visa and make sure the information it contains is valid and complete.

If your visa was denied:

If you receive a Schengen visa rejection for Switzerland, you have the right to an appeal, within 30 days of receiving your rejection.

Your appeal will likely be subject to a fee of 200 CHF, which is generally non-refundable regardless of the outcome of the appeal (positive or negative).

Begin the appeal process by picking up your standard issued-visa refusal form, which describes why your request was denied, and explains the detailed steps of the appeal process.

You should submit your Schengen visa appeal in writing, in either French, German, or Italian, indicating your justification for lodging an appeal.

You may submit your appeal, or you may formally designate someone else to do so on your behalf.

Alternatively, if you lack a designated proxy, you may lodge the appeal to a Swiss consulate abroad.

If the SEM rejects your first appeal, your last recourse is to lodge a final appeal with the Swiss Federal Administrative Court at the following address:

This should be inclusive of your written justification for lodging an appeal, as well as a copy of the refusal you are appealing. Please note that the decision of the Administrative court is final.

Finally, once you obtain your Schengen Visa for Switzerland please note the following:

Your visa may be revoked if you do not notify the Swiss Consulate/visa application center of any changes to your trip itinerary that occur after you have submitted your application.

Being approved for a Swiss visa does not guarantee you entry to either Switzerland or the general Schengen area-you can still be refused entry to both places upon arrival.

SHORT TERM VISA

A short stay visa is issued for the duration of the stay in the Schengen area, but for a maximum of 90days within a period of 180 days, from the date of entry into Schengen area. This is applicable to applicants who intend to travel to Switzerland for Tourism, Business, Visit, etc.

This visa is for applicants who intend to travel to Switzerland for holiday and recreation purposes.

Persons subject to visa requirements

Validity of the visa

Citizens of non-Schengen countries, regardless of their visa obligation status, might enter and remain within the Schengen Area without a residence permit for up to 90 days per 180-day period starting from the date of first entry. For multiple entries/departures to and from the Schengen area (including Switzerland) it is recommended to consult the short-stay calculator .

Validity of travel document

Regardless of whether you require a visa, you must be in possession of a valid travel document recognised by the Swiss authorities.

The travel document must be valid for at least 3 months after the date on which you plan to leave Switzerland and must have been issued within the last 10 years.

The passport must be valid and have at least two sequent blank pages.

Travel insurance

The insurance should clearly mention applicant details, the validity of coverage, the geographical scope (Schengen or Worldwide) of coverage and the amount (minimum of 30,000 EUR) it covers for the visa applicant. Insurance cards without these details will not be accepted.

No Objection Letter

The No Objection Letter must be in original with original signature and stamp. For minors applying with only one of the parents, a written consent of the other parent along with his/her passport, signature page and residence visa copy is also required. If none of the parents are applying, a written consent from both parents along with passport, signature page and residence visa copy is required.

Please note that all decisions regarding the issuance , the duration and number of entries for a visa are at the sole prerogative of the Embassy.

The acceptance of a visa application and documents by VFS Global does not guarantee the issuance of a visa. Once an application is forwarded to the Embassy, they may request more documentation or make further requests from the applicant in order to process the application.

For Spouse of EU Nationals, only the following documents are required:

• Original and a copy of the Marriage Certificate attested by UAE MOFA and spouse’s passport copy
• Completely filled and signed Application Form
• Original Passport and copies of passport, previous Schengen visa copies issued within last 3 years and UAE residence visa of the applicant
• 2 coloured passport size photos in white background

Please note:

• The applicable visa fee in AED is as per the current exchange rate. It is subject to change without notice due to sudden foreign exchange fluctuations.
• Applicant shall be charged a service charge of AED 112.58 per application in addition to the visa fees.
• All fees are non-refundable.

Please provide two recent coloured photographs (not more than 6 months old) of yourself. The photographs should be:

• Taken against a plain light background (white or off-white) so that features are distinguishable and have contrast against the background.
• Clear share quality and with the face in focus.
• Printed on normal photographic paper (camera print).
• Full face, non-smiling [without sunglasses, a hat/cap or other head covering, unless the applicant wears such items because of their religious belief or ethnic background].

Note: Please follow these instructions carefully. If photographs presented do not meet these requirements your application will be considered incomplete. A photo booth is available at the centre to help you click photographs meeting these requirements.

Usually, processing time for visa applications is 10 working days (starting from the time when the Embassy or Consulate received the application, not including the transportation time), counting from when all requested documents have been submitted. This period may be extended in specific cases, notably when further scrutiny of the application is required, for example, when an applicant must come to an interview or submit additional documentation requested by the Embassy or Consulate. During certain times of the year, the processing time can be longer due to the high volume of applications. It is recommended to submit your visa application at least two weeks prior to date of travel date and if possible, even earlier ahead of the holiday period.

Citizens of non-Schengen countries, regardless of their visa obligation status, might enter and remain within the Schengen Area without a residence permit for up to 90 days per 180-day period starting from the date of first entry. Who is eligible to apply for the Switzerland Schengen Visa?

You must meet certain criteria to be eligible for a Swiss Schengen Visa. These include:

Do children and minors need a Schengen Visa for Switzerland?

Yes, minors from eligible countries must also have a Schengen Visa to visit Switzerland.

Both parents or legal guardians must sign the application form. Additional documents, such as the child's birth certificate, may be necessary to submit during the application process.

How long is the Switzerland Schengen Visa valid?

You can visit Switzerland and the Schengen Area for up to 90 days per entry within a 180-day period. This means you can enter and travel between any Schengen country as often as you like, as long as you do not exceed the cumulative 90 days.

The multiple-entry visa is usually issued for 180 days to 5 years, with a max. stay of 90 days per entry. This decision is based on your supporting documents, travel history, and other factors.

Can I extend the Swiss Schengen Visa?

No, it’s not possible to extend a Schengen Visa . In exceptional circumstances, such as emergencies, an extension is granted. If you need more time in Switzerland or the Schengen Area than your visa allows, you must go home and reapply for a new Schengen Visa.

• Valid passport: Valid for at least six months after your planned arrival date and with at least two blank pages. If you live in a country different from your country of origin, please submit your proof of residency.
• Travel plans: Include a return flight ticket or any confirmed hotel reservation(s) and tours to show your travel plans.
• Sufficient funds: Show that you can finance your trip by providing bank statements or other documents stating your income and financial stability.
• Travel insurance: The insurance policy must cover medical expenses up to €30,000 in the entire Schengen Zone.

The general steps to apply are:

Switzerland Schengen Visa costs and processing time

The Swiss authorities can take up to 45 days to decide, but it can take longer. It is advised to apply for a Swiss visa at least two months before you go .

The government visa fee of about US$85 (may differ per nationality) must be paid during your appointment (half-price for children between the ages of 6 and 12 and free for kids under 6 years old).

You won’t need to pay a government fee if you are:

A child or spouse from a UE, EFTA, or Swiss national.

A CERN or UN worker traveling on an official trip.

A student who will study in Switzerland for a maximum of 90 days.

Do I need a Switzerland Schengen Visa if I’m transiting through the country?

Yes, a Switzerland Airport Transit Visa is needed for certain nationals who want to enter the country to change transportation means.

There are two Schengen transit visa categories:

Airport Transit Schengen Visa.

Transit Schengen Visa for Seafarers.

Differences between the Switzerland Schengen Visa and ETIAS

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new travel authorization that will be implemented from the end of 2023. Here are the differences between ETIAS and the Schengen Visa :

• ETIAS is a new travel authorization system designed to improve European security. The purpose is to check whether visa-free travelers visiting the European Union and the Schengen Area pose any regional safety risks.

The ETIAS system is comparable to the United States ESTA system . If you can enjoy visa-free travel and are not required to have a Schengen Visa, you can apply for your ETIAS online once it’s available.

What documents do I need to apply online for the Switzerland Schengen Visa Form?

What documents do I need to bring to the Switzerland Schengen Visa appointment?

You should bring the following documents:

Your printed and signed application form.

Two application photos. Make sure they follow the Schengen standards.

The payment for the visa fee.

Your collected fingerprints in case you have not registered them in the VIS (Visa Information System) for the previous 59 months. Children younger than 12 don’t need to follow this requirement.

Your valid passport. It needs to have been issued for the past 10 years, be valid for at least 3 months after your planned stay, and contain at least 2 blank pages.

Copies of your previous Schengen Visas issued within the past 5 years (if needed).

Prove that you are capable of financing your trip. For example, bring your bank statements from the last 3 months with your full name and current address. You will need to spend a minimum of $100 per day in Switzerland, and $30 per day if you are a student.

If you can’t prove you can support yourself during your trip, you will need an official declaration of guarantee signed by your host and certified by the emigration authorities in Switzerland.

Your proof of accommodation. For example, a confirmed hotel booking. If you are traveling with a group, you will need a certificate from the travel agency.

If you are living in a country different from your country of origin, please bring your proof of residency.

A signed and dated letter of invitation from your host, including his/her Swiss passport or residence permit copy if he/she isn’t Swiss.

You will need a recent, official, signed, and dated letter from your employer including your position in the company and salary.

If you are self-employed, bring a copy of your business license, tax return, and bank statement.

If you are a student, you need a recent, official, signed, and dated letter from your school, university, or college specifying your enrollment.

If you are traveling for business, you need a letter of invitation from the host company in Switzerland with your full name and travel details.

A copy of your flight reservation.

Your travel itinerary. It is always helpful to detail all the activities you’re going to do during your trip and means of transport.

If you travel alone as a minor, you will need parental consent.

Health insurance for travel that could cover hospitalizations, emergencies, urgent treatments and healthcare, death, or repatriation in the Schengen area of at least 30,000 euros.

No. There is a government fee you will usually need to pay.

Various regulations apply for entering Switzerland. A basic distinction is made between citizens of the European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries and those of other countries. The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) is the responsible authority in Switzerland.

Since Switzerland’s adherence to the Schengen and Dublin agreements came into force (12 December 2008), Swiss representations abroad are able to issue certain categories of visa, depending on the length of stay and purpose of the journey in Switzerland. Please select one of the following options.

All Swiss visa centers are operating normally in China. Requests for all types of visa, including for tour groups, may be submitted to the visa center of the respective consular district. 

Schengen visa for a stay of up to 90 days

For persons wishing to enter Switzerland for a short stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period: for example, in a context of tourism, a visit to relatives or friends, short-term language studies, participating in a conference or in sporting/cultural events, etc.

National visa for a stay of more than 90 days

For persons wishing to enter Switzerland for a stay of more than 90 days within a 180-day period. It is subject to the authorisation of the cantonal migration authority competent for the intended place of residence. For example: long-term student, family reunification, marriage in Switzerland, etc.

Airport transit visa

For citizens of certain countries who need a transit visa even if they are staying in the international transit area of the airport and do not enter the Schengen territory.

Labour / Work permits

Admission of foreign workers to an employer in Switzerland is subject to the authorisation of the competent cantonal authority. The entry visa is granted only when the requested authorisations have been delivered.
