A cup of coffee and croissants with inspiring quotes for your next travel adventure.

Anthony Bourdain was a renowned chef, author, and television personality known for his adventurous spirit and open-minded approach to exploring different cultures through their cuisine. His insightful and thought-provoking quotes continue to inspire and resonate with food and travel enthusiasts around the world.

Here are my top 22 of Anthony Bourdain's most memorable food and travel quotes:

1. Good food is very often, even most often, simple food.

2. An ounce of sauce covers a multitude of sins.

3. The way you make an omelet reveals your character.

4. Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.

5. For me, the cooking life has been a long love affair, with moments both sublime and ridiculous.

6. Our movements through time and space seem somehow trivial compared to a heap of boiled meat in broth, the smell of saffron, garlic, fishbones and Pernod.

7. You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together.

8. I, personally, think there is a real danger of taking food too seriously. Food should be part of the bigger picture .

9. What nicer thing can you do for somebody than make them breakfast?

10. If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.

11. I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one.

12. Barbecue may not be the road to world peace, but it’s a start.

13. Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you.

14. Meals make the society, hold the fabric together in lots of ways that were charming and interesting and intoxicating to me.

15. Bad food is made without pride, by cooks who have no pride, and no love. Bad food is made by chefs who are indifferent, or who are trying to be everything to everybody, who are trying to please everyone.

16. Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.

17. Your body is not a temple, it's an amusement park. Enjoy the ride.

18. I’ve long believed that good food, good eating, is all about risk. Whether we’re talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters, or working for organized crime ‘associates,’ food, for me, has always been an adventure.

19. I learned a long time ago that trying to micromanage the perfect vacation is always a disaster. That leads to terrible times.

20. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I'm always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.

21. Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonald's? Or do we want to eat without fear, tearing into the local stew, the humble taqueria's mystery meat, the sincerely offered gift of a lightly grilled fish head?

22. It's an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Pichu, for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about. For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you've been and what's happened. In the end, you're just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it.

These quotes encapsulate Bourdain's deep appreciation for the cultural significance of food and the profound connections it fosters among people from all walks of life.

A table with a breathtaking view of the ocean, perfect for enjoying exquisite food and contemplating inspiring travel quotes.

Long Term Travel as a Couple: Does it Hurt or Strengthen Relationships?

Paul Heller has been a lifelong avid traveler and language learner and teacher, Even as a child, he told Santa Claus that he wanted to visit all the children worldwide. At seven years old, Paul wanted to retire to Mexico. At eight, he memorized the name, capital, location, and some facts about every country worldwide. At twelve, he found a book "Lonely Planet: Southeast Asia on a Shoestring" and started developing his own itinerary for a future round-the-world trip. He remained obsessed with travel; after getting a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California and working as an administrator, He spent his vacations going to different countries around the globe studying language, touring, and volunteering. In 1994, he quit his job and lived in Russia as a volunteer English instructor. He discovered that he loved teaching languages. In 2004, he decided to make a living out of his travels and founded a community of people who love to travel just like him. He developed 5 three-hour classes about living and traveling long-term worldwide which he taught in over 50 adult education programs throughout the US. After his parents passed, he realized his dream of traveling around the world; cruising and touring some of the most remote places like the North Atlantic, Patagonia, and Oceania; and learning new languages (he knows Spanish, Italian, French, and Russian). Paul encourages everyone to learn foreign languages. He knows that it can be frustrating and slow but that anyone can learn a language if they put in the work and, most importantly, learning a language is well worth the time and effort because it opens up a whole new set of people, ideas, and cultures. He is currently spending the next chapter of his life in Mérida, México. He is excited about using this blog and his classes and workshops to inspire and equip fellow Fifty Plus Nomads with the language, cultural, and psychological skills necessary to be successful and happy long-term travelers and expats over 50.

47 Anthony Bourdain Quotes That Will Inspire You to Travel More, Eat Better, and Enjoy Life

From his best "Kitchen Confidential" quotes, to Anthony Bourdain's thoughts on life, his passionate search for new cultures and cuisines will inspire your next adventure.

quotes about food travel

I have a printed out copy of Anthony Bourdain's first New Yorker article, Don't Eat Before Reading This , in my desk drawer. Sometimes I forget it's there, and sometimes it gets crushed by external hard drives, travel brochures, or extraneous chords. But every so often, when I'm sick of working, I'll clean out my desk and start reading the crumpled pages. And almost instantly, I am thrown by the way Bourdain sculpts sentences , by his matter-of-fact humor, and by how timeless his words are. Bourdain's work hooks me instantly, and offers answers to questions I didn't even know I had. Much of Anthony Bourdain's writing advocates for experiencing culture through food, and exploring the lesser-known sights of new cities. And those ideas have helped informed how I travel.

Whether you're a fan of his written work and are searching for "Kitchen Confidential" quotes, or you're more partial to watching Parts Unknown , there's a piece of his wisdom to suit every appetite. These 52 Anthony Bourdain quotes about life will broaden your travel horizons and inspire you on your next journey.

"It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn."

"Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you."

"The journey is part of the experience — an expression of the seriousness of one's intent. One doesn't take the A train to Mecca."

"If you're twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them — wherever you go."

"If I'm an advocate for anything, it's to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else's shoes or at least eat their food, it's a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move."

"Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown."

"Travel isn't always pretty. It isn't always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that's okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind."

"It's an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu , for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about. For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you've been and what's happened. In the end, you're just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it."

"I'm a big believer in winging it. I'm a big believer that you're never going to find perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I'm always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary."

"Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonald's? Or do we want to eat without fear, tearing into the local stew, the humble taqueria's mystery meat, the sincerely offered gift of a lightly grilled fish head?"

"Drink heavily with locals whenever possible."

"Nothing unexpected or wonderful is likely to happen if you have an itinerary in Paris filled with the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower."

"Plans should be ephemeral, so be prepared to move away from them."

Anthony Bourdain Food Quotes

"You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together."

"Barbecue may not be the road to world peace, but it's a start."

"I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable."

"The mishandling of food and equipment with panache was always admired; to some extent, this remains true to this day."

"I learned a long time ago that trying to micromanage the perfect vacation is always a disaster. That leads to terrible times."

"I've long believed that good food, good eating, is all about risk. Whether we're talking about unpasteurized Stilton, raw oysters or working for organized crime 'associates,' food, for me, has always been an adventure"

"Good food is very often, even most often, simple food."

"An egg in anything makes it better."

"But I do think the idea that basic cooking skills are a virtue, that the ability to feed yourself and a few others with proficiency should be taught to every young man and woman as a fundamental skill, should become as vital to growing up as learning to wipe one's own ass, cross the street by oneself, or be trusted with money."

"The way you make an omelet reveals your character."

"An ounce of sauce covers a multitude of sins."

"And now to sleep, to dream. . . perchance to fart."

"Food is everything we are. It's an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It's inseparable from those from the get-go."

"Meals make the society, hold the fabric together in lots of ways that were charming and interesting and intoxicating to me. The perfect meal, or the best meals, occur in a context that frequently has very little to do with the food itself."

"For me, the cooking life has been a long love affair, with moments both sublime and ridiculous."

"You have to be romantic to invest yourself, your money, and your time in cheese."

"Generally speaking, the good stuff comes in on Tuesday: the seafood is fresh, the supply of prepared food is new, and the chef, presumably, is relaxed after his day off."

"You can dress brunch up with all the focaccia, smoked salmon, and caviar in the world, but it's still breakfast."

"Skills can be taught. Character you either have or you don't have."

"Luck is not a business model."

"But I'm simply not going to deceive anybody about the life as I've seen it. It's all here: the good, the bad and the ugly."

"I don't have to agree with you to like you or respect you."

"If you're a writer, particularly if you're a writer or a storyteller of any kind, there is something already kind of monstrously wrong with you."

"If I believe in anything, it is doubt. The root cause of all life's problems is looking for a simple f—ing answer."

"Perhaps wisdom. . . is realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go."

"What are our expectations? Which of the things we desire are within reach? If not now, when? And will there be some left for me?"

"Give the people you work with or deal with or have relationships with the respect to show up at the time you said you were going to. And by that I mean, every day, always and forever. Always be on time."

Food Travel Quotes to Get You Eating Right for Your Beautiful Trip

Food Travel Quotes to Get You Eating Right for Your Beautiful Trip

Food travel quotes tend to make us want to go on a plan to eat something super exotic, and here are 10 of the best.

We eat on travel to experience new flavors and cultures, and, well, because we gotta eat.

I mean, duh!

Anyway, here are 10 of my favorite quotes about food that I think apply well to travel.

Get ready to be inspired or to have the cravings go wild.

Food Travel Quotes

Food travel is exploring diverse cuisines and culinary traditions, immersing in culture through taste experiences.

While these quotes primarily focus on food and cooking, they indirectly relate to travel through culinary wanderlust.

You say “Delhi,” and I’m already drooling about the delicious biryani, or the pasta in “Rome,” or…

When traveling, experiencing different cuisines and dining traditions becomes a vital aspect of cultural immersion.

In this case, you could say that food serves as a bridge. It’s a bridge connecting us with new cultures.

It does that by enhancing our trip through taste and discovery.

Whether you’re enjoying the traditions of the Mayans or going up the northern coasts of Europe, food is powerful.

And these quotes really remind us of that.

Here we go…

1. “Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first.” – Ernestine Ulmer

This quote humorously advises enjoying life’s pleasures without waiting for certainty.

Go take that trip you’ve been dying to go on!

AND… try street food in Italy and, maybe, even in Japan !

So, it suggests indulging in dessert immediately, symbolizing the importance of seizing joy and savoring moments.

Even in uncertainty.

What I love about this quote is that it really advocates for prioritizing enjoyment and living in the present.

You know… rather than postponing happiness for an uncertain future.

If I could bottle that as advice, it would be what I would give to people who think traveling is expensive.

2. “Tell me what you eat, and I will tell you who you are.” – Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin

The original French is, “Dis-moi ce que tu manges, je te dirai ce que tu es.”

I know exactly the type of person who likes Moroccan food . If you can eat lamb tagine with camel fat, oh, I see an explorer!

Wow, this is why this is one of my favorite food travel quotes: it is powerful. It means that one’s food choices reflect one’s identity and character.

So, this quote suggests that by examining a person’s diet, you can understand their habits, preferences, and perhaps even their cultural or social background.

This is a quote that clearly highlights the connection between food and personal identity.

I mean, it’s exactly a variation of “You are what you eat,”… right?

3. “Food is our common ground, a universal experience.” – James Beard

And that’s why, ladies and gentlemen, Mr. James Beard is the iconic food personification that he has become.

This food travel quote highlights how eating connects us all. If you are in South Africa or in Norway , food is delicious.

In its heart of hearts, it implies that regardless of our differences, everyone shares the need for food.

It focuses on the universal nature of food as something that brings people together.

As a result, food is something that transcends cultural, social, and geographical boundaries.

What a message we all need to be reminded of.

4. “In cooking, you’ve got to have a what-the-hell attitude.” – Julia Child

In cooking, you've got to have a what-the-hell attitude. - Julia Child

This quote from Julia Child encourages a bold and adventurous approach to cooking.

You could literally say the same about wanderlust, which is why it is such a great food travel quote.

So, Julia’s quote suggests that to excel in the kitchen, one should embrace experimentation and not be afraid of making mistakes.

The “what-the-hell attitude” implies a willingness to take risks and try new things.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is essential for culinary creativity and success.

This would be the same message I have for someone who’s afraid to visit East African nations like Kenya or Tanzania on their own.

5. “There is no love sincerer than the love of food.” – George Bernard Shaw

This quote expresses the profound affection people have for food.

For instance, George Bernard Shaw suggests that the love for food is genuine and deeply felt.

In this case, the claim is that it surpasses other forms of love in its sincerity.

Basically, the quote highlights the emotional connection and pleasure that food brings to our lives.

Therefore, the focus is its importance in human experience.

6. “Food is symbolic of love when words are inadequate.” – Alan D. Wolfelt

This quote suggests that food can convey love and affection when spoken words fall short.

What makes it one of the best food travel quotes is that you will know this feeling as you travel.

There will be destinations in your life whose dishes will literally leave you speechless.

So, Wolfelt implies that in moments where expressing emotions verbally is challenging or insufficient, preparing or sharing food can serve as a meaningful gesture of care and affection.

Yes, the quote highlights the powerful and universal language of food in expressing love and connection.

7. “First we eat, then we do everything else.” – M.F.K. Fisher

This quote is really about the fundamental importance of food in our lives. A day can we go without it.

So, Fisher suggests that eating is a priority that precedes all other activities.

And that is exactly what makes it one of those food travel quotes that make you sit and smile.

Basically, this quote implies that nourishing ourselves is essential for energy and sustenance.

That is, enabling us to carry out tasks and engage in various activities effectively.

8. “No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people get together to eat.” – Guy Fieri

No matter what culture, everywhere around the world, people get together to eat. - Guy Fieri

So, my traveling buddies, this quote highlights the universal aspect of communal dining across diverse cultures.

As you travel to diverse destinations, you will start to see this. Chinese New Year, Eid, Rosh Hashanah, Christmas, you name it.

Food travel quotes make us think about how much we have in common, and Guy Fieri does just that.

The quote suggests that regardless of cultural differences, the act of sharing meals brings people together.

So, it focuses on the commonality of gathering around food as a social activity.

Plus, this social activity transcends geographical, linguistic, and cultural boundaries.

Absolutely.

9. “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” – Virginia Woolf

Well, I would add travel well, too! But, my oh my, what a quote, am I right?

Virginia Woolf proclaims that eating good food is essential for overall well-being.

And, yes, she implies that our ability to think clearly, love deeply, and sleep peacefully is closely linked to food.

The satisfaction and nourishment we receive from eating a proper meal is how we get to experience any of those.

10. “Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all.” – Harriet Van Horne

This quote compares cooking to love. Harriet Van Horne says that both require wholehearted commitment.

I could not agree more!

Food travel quotes like this advise approaching cooking with passion and enthusiasm.

Basically, just as one would approach a romantic relationship!

Where is the lie?!?!

What I love about this quote is that it implies half-hearted efforts in either endeavor are insufficient for true satisfaction and fulfillment.

Add travel to that, my friends!

Food Travel Quotes – Final Thoughts

These quotes all center around the theme of food. They focus on its importance in life, relationships, and culture.

At the same time, they celebrate food’s universality and significance in human experience.

So, travel exposes us to diverse culinary traditions, which creates an appreciation for the significance of food in culture.

Plus, it reminds us of its universal role in human connection.

Therefore, I invite you to reflect on all of these!

ANTHONY BOURDAIN ON FOOD

“Bad food is made without pride, by cooks who have no pride, and no love. Bad food is made by chefs who are indifferent, or who are trying to be everything to everybody, who are trying to please everyone… Bad food is fake food… food that shows fear and lack of confidence in people’s ability to discern or to make decisions about their lives.”

“Cooking is a craft, I like to think, and a good cook is a craftsman—not an artist. There’s nothing wrong with that: the great cathedrals of Europe were built by craftsmen—though not designed by them. Practicing your craft in expert fashion is noble, honorable and satisfying.”

• Mark Twain Travel Quotes

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime.
To do something, say something, see something, before anybody else — these are the things that confer a pleasure compared with which other pleasures are tame and commonplace, other ecstasies cheap and trivial. Lifetimes of ecstasy crowded into a single moment.

quotes about food travel

It is the loveliest fleet of islands [ Hawaii ] that lies anchored in any ocean.
No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one [ Hawaii ], no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides; other things change, but it remains the same.   For me the balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud wrack; I can feel the spirit of its wildland solitudes, I can hear the splash of its brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.

If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine; it is lethal. — Paulo Coelho

Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. — Edward Abbey

quotes about food travel

Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless.   We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. Only when this is recognized can the blown-in-the glass bum relax and go along with it. Only then do the frustrations fall away. In this a journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. — John Steinbeck
What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? – it’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies. — Jack Kerouac
A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for. — J.A. Shedd
Do not follow where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and make a trail. — Ralph Waldo Emerson

quotes about food travel

It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any. — Hugh Laurie
Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the Earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white. — Mark Jenkins

quotes about food travel

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. — Christopher McCandless
Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else – above all, a travel bureau – arrange everything before-hand? — Richard Aldington
Be careful because Cambodia is the most dangerous place you will ever visit. You will fall in love with it, and eventually it will break your heart. — Joel Brinkley

quotes about food travel

To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the most pleasant sensations in the world. — Freya Stark
Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. — Unknown
I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses. — Bill Bryson
The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home. — Freya Stark

quotes about food travel

When you’ve managed to stumble directly into the heart of the unknown – either through the misdirection of others, or better yet, through your own creative ineptitude – there is no one there to hold your hand or tell you what to do. In those bad lost moments, in the times when we are advised not to panic, we own the unknown, and the world belongs to us. The child within has full reign. Few of us are ever so free. — Tim Cahill
No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow. — Lin Yutang
He travels the fastest who travels alone. — Rudyard Kipling

quotes about food travel

Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection. — Lawrence Durrell
When the traveler goes alone he gets acquainted with himself. — Liberty Hyde Bailey
The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready. — Henry David Thoreau

quotes about food travel

Loving life is easy when you are abroad. Where no one knows you and you hold your life in your hands all alone, you are more master of yourself than at any other time. — Hannah Arendt
Personally I like going places where I don’t speak the language, don’t know anybody, don’t know my way around and don’t have any delusions that I’m in control. Disoriented, even frightened, I feel alive, awake in ways I never am at home. — Michael Mewshaw

quotes about food travel

I can speak to my soul only when the two of us are off exploring deserts or cities or mountains or roads. — Paulo Coelho
Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road. Healthy, free, the world before me. The long brown path before me leading me wherever I choose. — Walt Whitman

• Anthony Bourdain Travel Quotes

If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.
Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.
It’s an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu , for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about.   For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you’ve been and what’s happened. In the end, you’re just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it.

quotes about food travel

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
I know that I will never understand the world I live in or fully know the places I’ve been. I’ve learned for sure only what I don’t know — and how much I have to learn.
I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find the perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.
Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? … I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.

quotes about food travel

It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.   Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.
I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.
Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.
Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

quotes about food travel

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.
At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.

quotes about food travel

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.
If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

95 most inspirational travel quotes ever penned

Our favourite inspirational travel quotes have encouraged us to travel with abandon over the years. Perhaps they will do the same for you…

For us, there is no such thing as luxury travel; travel is, by default, a luxury. It is a privilege provided by the country of our birth, a privilege that many are not as fortunate to enjoy.

Sometimes, we have to pinch ourselves at just how ridiculous our lives have become: an ex-teacher and jobbing writer travelling the world for a living. It is absurd, it is astonishing, it is luxury.

When I first went travelling at 21 years old, my father gave me this quote scrawled on a piece of card.

inspirational travel quotes

It infused me with wanderlust. It encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone, make the most of my time, see the world and enjoy the freedom that comes with being on the road. It remains one of the most inspirational travel quotes I’ve read (even if Twain did not actually say it).

Today, 20 years and almost 100 countries later, it’s still in my wallet. Despite its tattered and dishevelled appearance, it’s every bit as important to me now as it was then.

With that in mind, we’ve collated our most beloved inspirational travel quotes to encourage readers to “explore, dream and discover” for themselves.

If you're flying somewhere, the lost baggage limits are higher. Its natural strengths shine for road trippers, though. Travelex America adds coverage for roadside service and rental car coverage for unexpected accidents. It also covers pets should you be involved in an accident while on the road.

While your standard auto insurance does extend to car rentals within the U.S. for a limited time, any accident would affect future rates. Travelex would eliminate the risk of reporting to your auto insurance provider for minor incidents within its purview.

Introduction to Travel Insurance

Why travel insurance is a must-have.

The unpredictable nature of traveling – from flight cancellations to medical emergencies – can turn your dream vacation into a nightmare. Travel insurance acts as a personal safeguard, ensuring that unexpected events don't drain your wallet or ruin your trip.

Understanding Different Types of Travel Insurance

Not all travel insurance policies are created equal. From single-trip travel insurance policies to annual travel insurance plans , from minimal coverage to comprehensive protection, understanding the spectrum of options is your first step in finding the right fit for your journey.

Key Features to Look for in Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance for medical emergencies.

Imagine falling ill in a foreign country; daunting, right? A robust travel insurance plan ensures you don't have to worry about how much emergency medical care while traveling will cost, even in the most remote corners of the globe. This coverage will often come in tandem with emergency medical evacuation coverage.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Benefits

Life is full of surprises, some less pleasant than others. Trip cancellation and interruption coverage ensures that you're not left out of pocket if unforeseen circumstances force you to cancel or cut your trip short. You may also look for cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason options, which will reimburse you for a percentage of your nonrefundable fees, but expands the covered reasons you can cancel a trip. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance companies here.

Coverage for Personal Belongings and Baggage Loss

Losing your belongings is more than an inconvenience; it's losing a piece of your world. Insurance that covers personal belongings and baggage loss ensures that you're compensated for your loss, helping you to rebound and continue your adventure.

Support and Assistance Services

In times of trouble, having a lifeline can make all the difference. Look for insurance that offers 24/7 support and assistance services, giving you peace of mind that help is just a phone call away. Also, check websites that field customer reviews like Trustpilot, the Better Business Bureau, and InsureMyTrip , to see how well a company responds to customer requests.

Choosing the Best Travel Insurance

Reputation and reliability of the travel insurance provider.

A provider's reputation is not just about being well-known; it's about reliability, customer satisfaction, and the ability to deliver on promises. Researching and choosing a reputable provider is a cornerstone in ensuring your safety and satisfaction.

Understanding the Policy's Fine Print

The devil is in the details, and understanding the fine print of what your travel insurance policy covers is crucial. Be aware of coverage limits, exclusions, and the process for filing a claim to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

Customer Reviews and Feedback

In the age of information, customer reviews and feedback are goldmines of insight. Learn from the experiences of others to gauge the reliability and customer service of the insurance provider you're considering. While the ratings are important, you should also look at whether or not a company responds to customer complaints.

How to Get the Most Out of Your Travel Insurance

Knowing your policy inside out.

Familiarize yourself with every aspect of your policy – what it covers, what it doesn't, how to file a claim, and who to contact in an emergency. Being informed means being prepared.

Steps to Take When a Problem Arises

If you face an issue during your travels, knowing the immediate steps to take can make all the difference. Keep important contacts and your policy details handy, and remember, your insurance provider is there to assist you.

How to Pick the Best Travel Insurance Company for You

There isn't a one-size-fits-all policy that works perfectly for every traveler. Young, healthy solo travelers can opt for much cheaper plans that offer bare-bones coverage, while families juggling complex itineraries will do best by investing in a robust policy that can help defray any costs associated with lost baggage, delayed transportation or other trip-impeding obstacles.

That being said, you can't go wrong with a travel insurance provider that boasts a reputable history and offers a wide range of customizable plans. In some cases, you may be comparing plans that are only a few dollars' apart from each other. In such situations, you should generally opt for the insurance company that offers the strongest customer service. It's also worth considering whether or not the travel insurance provider has been reviewed by other travelers with similar itineraries to your own.

An insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip or Squaremouth is one of the best tools for searching travel insurance policies. Once you input the specifics of your travel itinerary, you'll be able to see hundreds of search results to compare the ones that catch your eye. If the options are too overwhelming, use the filters to the left of your search page to eliminate as many irrelevant plans as possible.

How We Reviewed the Best Travel Insurance Companies

To come up with our list of the best travel insurance companies, we evaluated each insurer based on the following factors:

Guide Methodology: What We Considered

Policy Types

Travel insurance is essential, but often underused partly because people aren't getting what they want. Business Insider's 2023 travel study showed 10.65% of travelers surveyed bought cancel for any reason insurance. Cost may be a factor, but in many cases, the coverage is more affordable than you might think. Regardless, companies must offer a diverse range of coverage options. We award five stars to companies offering all standard coverages and additional options like pet and sports equipment protection.

Our 2023 travel study indicated the majority of purchases were made through the travel provider (ex: flight protection insurance when you're purchasing your airline tickets). While these may be sufficient for some customers, we look for companies offering a more comprehensive range of services.

According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, the average cost of travel insurance will be between 4% and 8% of total travel expenses. Anything beyond that price point should include additional benefits beyond the standard inclusions, such as CFAR protection or upgraded medical coverage. Anything below that 4% threshold may leave you lacking important or sufficient coverage in an emergency.

Convenience and Flexibility

Whether you're an infrequent traveler or a suitcase warrior, a good travel insurance company should have you covered. In many cases, you might not even have to talk to a person in order to purchase your policy.

Many people think of travel insurance in context with specific trips, but most of these top contenders sell both single-trip and multi-trip policies, also known as annual travel insurance. Some companies also offer plans specifically designed for cruisers, students abroad, and business travelers. (Read our guide to the best cruise travel insurance companies for more details.) Finally, all of these providers offer multiple options for getting the specific areas and amounts of coverage that you want.

Claims Handling

Most travelers never have a large claim. Premiums are low, and it provides peace of mind for the just in case situations. So they leave reviews based on their reduced stress levels. But what happens if you lose your luggage or have to stay a few extra days due to an unexpected accident? Will your insurance carrier cover your claim without all the hassle? We check real customer reviews to sort this out for you.

Ease of Use and Support

When purchasing, during your trip, and throughout the claims process, you may need extra support. Does the company have a 24/7 help line? Does it have an online or mobile system allowing you to self-manage? Essentially, what are the options when you need help? We look at the big picture to evaluate the average customer experience with each company.

You can read our full insurance rating methodology for even more details.

Best Travel Insurance FAQs

There isn't a one-size-fits-all solution for every traveler. Determine the benefits that are most important to you, like baggage delay coverage, medical coverage, and trip delay coverage, then look for a company with solid customer ratings, especially when it comes to processing claims.

Travel insurance will pay out if you experience a covered event, such as a travel delay or delayed or lost baggage. If you're looking to get travel insurance for a specific reason, such as needing to potentially cancel your trip due to work reasons, make sure your policy will cover you in that situation before purchasing it. You should also check customer reviews to see other travelers' claims experiences, as it varies wildly from company to company.

The average cost of travel insurance is 4% to 8% of your total trip cost, so it could vary widely depending on where you're traveling and the length of your trip. Your age, the number of people in your group, and other factors can also influence how much you'll pay.

Most comprehensive travel insurance policies include travel medical coverage that can come in handy if an emergency occurs and you need medical evacuation. Some travel insurance plans offer more specialized coverage for travelers with pre-existing conditions , so shop around if medical coverage is a top priority for you.

$100,000 should be a sufficient medical coverage limit for travel insurance. If you're planning on doing extreme sports or anything particularly risky on your trip, you may want to increase your coverage level. A high medical coverage limit is especially useful when you're purchasing cruise travel insurance, since medical evacuations are more involved at sea.

Survey: 45% of parents take on debt for Disney vacations but the regrets are few

Concessions were the biggest driver of excessive spending, with 65% of respondents citing the high cost of food and beverages as being particularly onerous. but there's a way around that cost..

A new survey shows that almost half of parents are going into debt during a Disney vacation.

Conducted by LendingTree , the survey published this week found that 24% of all Disney-goers have accrued debt during their trips, along with 45% of parents with children under the age of 18. The average amount of debt for those parents was $1,983, LendingTree said.

Concessions were the biggest driver of excessive spending, with 65% of respondents citing the high cost of food and beverages. Additionally, 48% of respondents said that they had not budgeted enough for transportation, and 47% cited accommodations.

Disney World: What happens when a park closes? We stayed to find out.

LendingTree found that a stay at a Disney World resort hotel for two adults and two children could range as high as $1,079 a night – the biggest cause of debt.

Some parents willingly take on debt for Disney

Notably, 75% of respondents said that their Disney trip did or would take six months or less to pay off. Even so, 59% of parents expressed no regrets over dropping a hefty chunk of change on a Disney vacation. And a whopping 90 percent said that they were satisfied with their trips overall because they were a treat rather than an obligation.

“For so many parents, taking their kids to Disney is a rite of passage, something they remember fondly from their youth and want to experience with their kids,” LendingTree chief credit analyst Matt Schulz said in a statement. “Because of those feelings, they’re often willing to take on debt to get there.”

Among those parents who have taken on debt to travel to a Disney theme park, 83% did so in the past five years. The number of total respondents who went into debt during a Disney trip also increased 33% from LendingTree’s 2022 survey.

LendingTree spoke with 2,001 people ranging in age from 18 to 78 for the survey.

Tips to save money on a Disney trip

Citing the high cost of food, Schulz advised parents of a way to save some money on a Disney vacation.

“One of the best ways to cut costs is to bring your own food and nonalcoholic drinks to the park,” he said in a statement. “There are limits as to what you can bring, but packing snacks and refillable water bottles, for example, can make a real difference in the overall cost of your Disney experience.”

LendingTree also recommends that parents keep an eye out for discounts, like for members of the military or for in-state residents. Discounts also pop up for members of hotel chains and online rewards for off-site chain restaurants could also help save.

May inflation breakdown: Where are prices rising the fastest?

Rent prices keep inflation uncomfortably high for many americans in may.

Jack Otter and ‘Barron’s Roundtable’ senior writer Nicholas Jasinski discuss how rate cuts are looking unlikely for 2024.

Sticky inflation is keeping rate cuts off the table for now, analyst says

Jack Otter and ‘Barron’s Roundtable’ senior writer Nicholas Jasinski discuss how rate cuts are looking unlikely for 2024.

Inflation loosened its stranglehold on the U.S. economy in May, but a spike in the cost of rent kept prices painfully high for millions of Americans.

The Labor Department said Wednesday that the consumer price index, a broad measure of how much everyday goods like gasoline, groceries and rent cost, was unchanged in May from the previous month. Prices climbed 3.3% from the same time last year. Both of those figures are lower than the 0.1% monthly increase and 3.4% headline gain forecast by LSEG economists.

"Finally, some positive surprises as both headline and core inflation beat forecasts," said Robert Frick, corporate economist at the Navy Federal Credit Union. "There was relief at the pump, but unfortunately, home and apartment costs continue to rise and remain the main cause of inflation. Until those shelter costs begin their long-awaited fall, we won’t see major drops in CPI."

Here is a breakdown of where Americans are seeing prices rising and falling the fastest as they continue to wrestle with sticker shock.

INFLATION RISES 3.3% IN MAY, LESS THAN EXPECTED

Housing costs were once again the biggest driver of inflation last month, accounting for more than two-thirds of the total monthly increase, according to the report.

Rent costs rose 0.4% for the month and are up 5.3% from the same time last year. Rising rents are concerning because higher housing costs most directly and acutely affect household budgets.

Another data point that measures how much homeowners would pay in equivalent rent if they had not bought their home also climbed by 0.4% from the previous month.

RENT PRICES ARE STAGNATING, SUGGESTING HIGH INFLATION MAY STICK AROUND

"Shelter inflation remains sticky – it’s been growing steadily at a 0.4% rate every month for the past four months," said Elizabeth Renter, senior economist at NerdWallet. "It’s the foot-dragging characteristics of elements helping to keep the overall CPI elevated."

Food has been one of the most visceral reminders of inflation for many Americans, who saw prices tick higher in May after holding steady the previous month.

The cost of food climbed 0.1% last month and is up 2.1% from the same time last year. The food away from home index rose sharply by 0.4%, while the cost of groceries was actually flat. However, groceries cost 1% more than they did last year, and when compared with January 2021 – before the inflation crisis began – prices are up more than 21%.

Consumers paid more for a number of basics, including bread (1.1%), pork (0.9%), chicken (1%), oranges (1.6%), apples (0.7%), cereal (0.2%), lettuce (0.8%) and dried beans, peas and lentils (2.4%).

Some prices did fall last month, including for coffee, butter and margarine, rice, ham and fresh fish and seafood.

Energy prices fell in May for the first time in four months, easing some of the financial pressure that many families are enduring. Prices fell 2% during the month, thanks to a 3.6% decline in gasoline.

The price of propane, kerosene and firewood also dropped 0.3% in May, while fuel oil costs decreased by 0.4%.

The cooler-than-expected headline inflation figure in May is largely due to the "unusual drop" in gasoline prices, according to Bill Adams, chief economist for Comerica Bank.

"Gas tends to rise at the beginning of the summer driving season, but prices entered the spring elevated due to headlines about the war in the Middle East, and then dipped in May as demand came in weaker than expected," he said.

There was some good news for Americans looking to buy a new car in May.

FED'S FIGHT AGAINST INFLATION IS WEIGHING ON MIDDLE-CLASS AMERICANS

New car and truck prices fell again last month, dropping 0.5%. Prices are down 0.8% from the same time last year.

But the cost of used vehicles – which were a major component of the inflation spike in 2022 – rose in May for the first time in two months, climbing 0.6%. From a year ago, prices are down 9.3%.

There is another growing problem for car owners: insurance costs. Auto insurance premiums fell 0.1% in May, but prices are up a stunning 20.3% from the same time last year.
