Facebook brings cloud gaming to Apple devices with a web app

But will people know how to find it.

Starting Friday, Facebook is bringing its nascent cloud gaming service to iPhones and iPads through a web app people will be able to add to their homescreens like a native app. The site will let you play simple web games like Solitaire and match-threes and stream more graphically intensive titles like racing games.

But thanks to Apple’s rules, it’s unclear how people will find it, since third-party developers like Facebook are barred from steering their app users to websites featuring purchasing mechanisms that aren’t Apple’s own. It’s a huge point of friction with not just Facebook, but other gaming companies like Epic that have strongly protested Apple’s grip on iOS payments. Facebook’s library of web games, which include HTML5-based ones alongside more advanced titles that stream directly from the cloud, use the social network’s custom payments system called Facebook Pay to accept in-game purchases.

Facebook’s decision to bring its game platform to iOS via the web mimics the approach of Amazon and Microsoft , which have also released Progressive Web Apps, or PWAs, for their respective cloud gaming services to get around the App Store. Last year, Facebook complained loudly when Apple blocked its attempt to put games in a standalone app for iOS and said it would look into alternatives. Shortly after that, Apple changed its rules to allow for cloud-based games as long as they were submitted individually as apps to the App Store for review — a policy that Microsoft and others said didn’t address their desire to release their own gaming storefronts on iOS.

“We’ve come to the same conclusion as others: web apps are the only option for streaming cloud games on iOS at the moment,” Facebook’s vice president of gaming, Vivek Sharma, told The Verge in a statement. “As many have pointed out, Apple’s policy to ‘allow’ cloud games on the App Store doesn’t allow for much at all. Apple’s requirement for each cloud game to have its own page, go through review, and appear in search listings defeats the purpose of cloud gaming. These roadblocks mean players are prevented from discovering new games, playing cross-device, and accessing high-quality games instantly in native iOS apps — even for those who aren’t using the latest and most expensive devices.”

Facebook isn’t a major player in gaming yet, as it has mostly focused on courting streamers to broadcast their gameplay for fans to watch. But last year it acquired a cloud gaming startup and released a handful of free-to-play titles like Asphalt 9 . It has since made its service available in more regions, added other titles like Assassin’s Creed: Rebellion , and said 1.5 million people play its cloud games per month.

While Facebook ultimately found a solution for getting its cloud games on iOS, there are still big limitations imposed by Apple’s Safari browser on web games. Sound is turned off by default, games can’t send push notifications, and graphics aren’t as powerful as they can be in native apps. And then there’s the problem of discovery.

A Facebook spokesperson declined to comment on its growth plans for the gaming website, but Apple’s rules say that developers can’t send users from a native app to a website with payments technology other than its own. Developers of the games Facebook features could do their own marketing, but those efforts would pale in comparison to the traffic that the main Facebook app could send.

Facebook’s cloud games are currently available in the US and parts of Canada and Mexico, while HTML games are accessible elsewhere as cloud games are slowly brought to more regions.

Facebook today confirmed that its cloud gaming service is now available on iPhone and iPad, although you'll need to use Safari and live in the United States and parts of Canada and Mexico.

According to a tweet, gamers can access the cloud gaming service by opening Safari and heading to http://fb.gg/play . People in other countries will have to put up with playing HTML 5 games, at least for now.

In a statement to iMore, Vivek Sharma, VP, Facebook Gaming pointed out that Facebook has come to the same conclusion as other cloud gaming companies and services — Safari really is the only way to get onto Apple's mobile devices.

In this simple game, which has a squared background just like a maths book, various coloured circles – cells – move around on a map. You control one of these circles.

The aim is to make your circle as big as possible, by collecting small bits of mass which you find scattered around, or by eating other players. However, you’re only able to eat them if you’re 25 percent bigger then them; if they’re 25 percent bigger, of course, they’ll eat you.

Before you start the game you can customise the name of your player and if you choose specific names the shape will have a specific appearance – for example, if you type ‘mars’ then the circle will look like the planet Mars.

Fail the level and you’ll get another chance, but you only have four lives; after that you’ll have to wait for a timer to give you another.

The game has many levels and they rise in difficulty as you play along, adding more features such as obstacles and unique challenges. The aim is to guide a little trundling eyeball with stumpy legs to a glowing blue goal. To do so, you warp the ground and make use of sticky tentacles to nudge, roll, and fling the oddball critter around. The primarily monochrome visuals are stunning, the piano soundtrack is suitably relaxing, and the puzzling action is intuitive but challenging – especially if you want to grab the three sets of fireflies littered about each stage.

You’ve probably played – or at least heard of – Pong. Two bats. One ball. Ushered in home gaming. And so on. Cube Slam is more or less that ancient favourite, except you’re facing off against a dopey bear, and the decidedly cuboid ‘ball’ often collides with power-ups that affect the game. Any nonchalance at being faced with such an old arcade test vanishes when your bat shrinks to a sliver and three balls rocket about the place.

Greedy green blob Om Nom has been dumped on your doorstep and is demanding all the candy. For some reason, said candy is dangling from ropes in a series of oddly elaborate boxes. Your aim is to get the sweet stuff to Om Nom’s maw, making use of the various contraptions before you.

Despite now being years old (the game debuted in 2010 on iOS ), Cut the Rope remains charming and engaging, not least when on failure Om Nom gives you an expression that makes you think floods of tears are imminent. (Note: to play the game, scroll down and click ‘Give it a try’.)

Answering the eternal question “What would happen if bears took over the world?”, Fist of Awesome finds a bearded lumberjack punching and kicking his way through time, trying to fix a world that’s gone horribly wrong.

This amusing premise has you initially scrapping your way through Bearhattan, duffing up furry critters who’ve “evolved homicidal tendencies”, and whose local cafés advertise ‘flame-grilled human flesh’ and ‘tears of our enemies’. Later levels find you immersed in prehistory, fending off cavebears and dinosaurs. David Attenborough might have stern words to say regarding its historical accuracy, but if you’re a fan of side-on brawlers, Fist of Awesome is, well, awesome.

Warning: under default settings this game contains extremely graphic and bloody cartoon injuries.

There’s two aspects to this game. The first is taking on a level and reaching the end without dying. (Some levels are specific for one character while others let you select whichever you fancy; each character has a specific shape and size so this choice may be critical to your success.) The second is creating your own levels for others to play. Who knows, you may find your level reaches a play count of 87 million, just like the number-one map in the game.

Happy Wheels is a single-player game but you can easily share your laptop or computer and take turns. It’s extremely fun and entertaining and even suitable for younger players, provided you tone down the blood/gore level in the advanced options. Henrique Pedrette

The brilliant thing about Gridland is that it isn’t what it first appears to be.

Fire up the game and you see a grid with symbols. You’ll be tempted to dismiss it as yet another match-three game – and one lacking the visual polish of Bejeweled. But Gridland is a deeper game, switching between a day challenge where you match items to manage resources and construct buildings, and a night where you fend off evil with a trusty sword and shield. (Hint: speed is very much not of the essence.)

The game explains nothing, and much of the fun is in discovering each of its twists and turns. (It works nicely on iPad, too.)

This is a cut-down take on the iOS and Android game about the last survivor of a failed civilisation. The aim is to fly through space, landing on planets to repair your ship, pilfer oxygen and fuel, and steal ecosystems like some kind of intergalactic vampire. On reaching your destination, your new home planet can be terraformed. Getting there is tough, though, since your craft is twitchy, and space is full of danger, from black holes to hostile aliens.

In this fast-paced arcade title, you’re a survivor of the zombie apocalypse and must dig or die. The controls are a bit odd, forcing you to dig down and left or right, carving your way through dirt and rock. Pathfinding is therefore something you must quickly think about at every step, lest you blunder into a stash of TNT some idiot’s buried, or get horribly eaten by a chasing zombie horde.

Essentially an online multiplayer Snake, slither.io (which is also available for iPad and iPhone ) has you dumped into an arena as a tiny worm, munching dots that gradually make you grow. The tiny snag: you’re not alone. You must therefore avoid crashing into other wrigglers, and use careful manoeuvring and boosts to have rivals crash into you (at which point they transform into tasty, nutritious dots to hoover up, catapulting you up the leaderboards).

Note that if the game stutters on your Mac, you should turn down the graphics quality setting.

With controls that’ll be familiar to anyone who’s played a ‘copter’ game (hold down to gain altitude; let go to dive), Swoop comes across like a simplified take on iOS title Whale Trail . Your colourful plane collects levitating gems, performing somersaults and avoiding surprisingly deadly clouds. Comb the ground and you’ll find the odd golden spanner to repair your plane, adding further seconds to your journey and boosting your score.

The original Vector Runner is a 3D survival game set in a stark vector world. If anything, Vector Runner Remix simplifies things further, taking a side-on approach that echoes Canabalt and other one-thumb leapy games.

Your little blue craft automatically zooms along, and you click to make it jump over the many gaps and obstacles. Fail and one of five lives is lost. Clever track design forces you to keep rethinking your approach; and the game rewards mastery, transforming what might have been a throwaway title into browser-based choreography.

The . io games genre might just have had its day if the drying up of the once-constant stream of new entries is anything to go by.

There was a time just a couple of years ago when the .io genre was the hot ticket in mobile and browser-based gaming. You could barely walk down the street without some larger being threatening to gobble you up.

Perhaps some explanation is in order here. The .io genre generally consists of simple online arena-based games, in which the name of the game is to survive and grow.

It all started with a browser-based game called Agar.io from Brazilian developer Matheus Valadares. The .io name came from that particular domain name.

Its simple, massively multiplayer, every-person-for-themselves gameplay started a wave of imitators and alternatives, and thus the informal .io genre was born.

More recent examples have folded in all manner of influences from other genres, from battle royale (which seemed to develop in tandem) to whatever other genre was the flavour of the month.

Slither.io is a simple game but one that seems to be very popular! This .io game for iPhone and Android is very straightforward, you get to be a long, wiggling worm, moving around a world of dots and other worms. You can eat the dots to grow bigger, making yourself slither along and grow. As you grow bigger, you have the ability to cut off other worms to destroy them, into a pile of dots, that you can then continue to consume and grow with. 2 Brutal.io

Brutal.io is a 2D, physics-based game where you play as a small car with a massive, spiked ball attached to it. This ball can be swung left and right as you drive, smashing into players and destroying their cars. You can also fling your ball out, getting rid of it until you click to retrieve it. Brutal has turrets that steal your energy and is a pretty fun physics-based game!

Party.io reminds me a lot of Humans Fall Flat. There are a bunch of different ragdoll characters trying to survive, looking to be the last one standing, while you all flail, attack and grab each other in attempts to keep yourself in the game. Unlike other .io games, this one has a bunch of different arenas instead of the same background - which adds something pretty interesting in the genre.

4 Magica.io

Magica.io is a magic-themed battle royale game, as you might have guessed based on the name. This battle arena game has you battling other players, collecting loot, leveling up your characters and collecting weapons - there is a lot going on in this game! You can even find different game modes, which helps Magica.io stand out.

5 Snowball.io

A wintry take on the genre, Snowball.io has you making a huge snowball - like the start of a snow person while bumping other players off of the map and making sure yours is the biggest. You can also make smaller snowballs, which then can be thrown at your opponents, which will help knock them out of the game!

6 Smashers.io

On a giant, colourful platform, Smashers.io has you bashing all of the other enemies who have joined your world, becoming larger and taking on their powers as you beat them down! You have a huge hammer to help you out and the last person standing is deemed the winner, allowing you to soldier on and take on more challenging people!

7 Paper.io 2

Paper.io 2 is one of my favourite .io games! This game has you appearing in a primarily white world, as a coloured cube. As you move around, you leave a trail, which once connected becomes an area of your colour. You want your colour to be the biggest area, but others can carve it up and if you run into their trails, you will find yourself dying too! It’s simple and fun.

Hexar.io is similar to Paper.io 2, in the way that your aim is to capture the world by moving around and connecting tiles to your main area of colour. However, instead of the free form shapes that you can make in Paper.io 2, Hexar.io is full of hexagons, which you can add through moving over them. This gives you a slightly bigger area to work with.

Mope.io is a cute .io game where you play as a tiny mouse who lives in a large world of animals - all of which are dangerous and controlled by other players! You need to find food, not get eaten, and grow into new animals to advance through the food chain. After a while, you’ll find yourself hunting and growing on your own.

10 Bumper.io

Another entry from casual masters Voodoo, which this time sees you engaging in a potent mash up of bumper cars and sumo wrestling. Barge your online opponents off the edge and eat ice cream to become bigger and stronger.

This 3D arena battler sees you chucking axes at your foes as a Viking warrior. Axe.io is far more fleshed out than your average .io game, with multiple modes and a pronounced progression system. It's the .io genre all grown up.

Here's the game that started the whole .io craze off in the first place. Agar.io is all about growing your cell as much as possible, gobbling up the smaller play cells as you go. It looks pretty ropey these days, but still plays great. Of course, it deserved the mention on our list of best .io games on iPhones.

13 Crash of Cars

It's not labelled as an .io game, but Crash of Cars certainly follows the 'every person for themselves' .io template. This time, though, the carnage is automotive and the graphics are uncommonly slick.

The creator of Agar.io returned with a cracking take on the genre he spawned. Diep.io is an altogether deeper, richer, and more tactical affair with tanks.

15 Knifez.io Knife Battle Royale

It is a simple, but at the same time, addictive multiplayer game where you have to fight with other players using knives. Here you will find many different weapons and dynamic gameplay.

16 Surviv.io

The .io genre has always been the bright and breezy brother of the Battle Royale genre, and Surviv.io brings the two even closer. It's essentially a top-down, heavily simplified PUBG. Something you can expect from an .io game on iOS!

17 Wings.io

Wings.io switches the view to side-on and gives you a little fighter plane to buzz around in. Make like Maverick and dogfight your way to victory.

18 Warbot.io

Most .io games are not particularly pretty or packed full of detail. Warbot.io is both, with 100 player-controlled 3D robots waging glorious war on one another.

An appealingly chunky, 3D take on the whole multiplayer Snake concept. Slither your creature around an object-filled town, knocking stuff over and fencing rivals in.

20 Snake.io

It's Snake, but multiplayer. Or, if you want to be cooler, a casual version of the Tron bike-maze game. Guide your creature around an arena, attempting to trick your enemies into crashing into your extended tail.

Hole.io pinched the 'control a hole' premise from Donut County ahead of that game's launch, which was a bit naughty. But it then applied that to the massively multiplayer .io genre, so it's not a total clone. And it's undoubtedly fun.

22 Survivor.io

Survivor.io is one of the new action games similar to the popular Vampire Survivors. All you have to do in this game is to survive against a great number of enemies and bosses for a certain amount of time. This game is easy to learn, but the gameplay is very dynamic, so you definitely won't get bored.

You play the plushies, moving to the beat, occasionally using Street Fighter-style special moves to unleash stuffed-toy furry fury on your angry aggressors. It’s absurd stuff and lots of fun – and you can even have the giant toys dance along to your own music collection.

You’re in space. There are lots of spaceships. So of course everyone’s trying to blast each other to pieces. In this $5.99 shoot ’em up, you pilot a spaceship and get to make NEEEOOOWWWW and DAGGADAGGADAGGA noises as you swoop between asteroids and annihilate opponents.

Although Interloper provides a backstory and missions, Interloper is more exhilarating arcade fare than lengthy campaign. For mobile, this works – it’s great to dip in and out of. Neatly, it reorients itself for landscape or portrait play too.

Demons have broken through into our reality in Super Fowlst 2, and only you can stop them! Also, you happen to be a chicken. On the plus side, you’re a determined chicken, who arcs left or right with a tap of the screen in this free four-way scrolling arcade game.

It’s familiar stuff. Bonk enemies on the head and they vanish. Grab keys to unlock doors. Collect coins. Don’t die. Steredenn is fairly simple, in that this $3.99 blaster merely requires you to shoot all of the things on your iPad screen. The game’s DNA has roots in classic scrolling fare like R-Type, and finds you fending off waves of baddies, before confronting huge bosses that are armed to the teeth.

The twist is that every game of Steredenn is different. Environments are semi-randomly generated. Upgrades are acquired at level’s end to complement your existing two-weapon set-up. Added to that is a layer of madcap oddness, with foes that have giant chainsaws strapped to their ships, and upgrade weapons ranging from massive stabby swords to pyrotechnic madness.

This mechanic plays out across a range of arenas. Some resemble primordial soup and demand patience as you slowly conquer what surrounds you. Others find you careening around central “Attractors,” like planets orbiting a sun. The iPad’s larger screen affords you the precision you’ll need in this beguiling game.

Edge is a $2.99 App Store classic that tasks you with guiding a cube around blocky isometric levels, collecting objects and trying to not fall into the deadly void. With its minimalist vibe and superb soundtrack, this iPad game offers plenty of atmosphere as you map out each level in your mind.

The path in The Gardens Between is linear, but often blocked. You must manipulate objects and time — running time backward or freezing the children while moving the scene — to progress. The visuals need an iPad’s large display to be appreciated, while the game’s tactile nature feels at home on the touchscreen rather than under the lifeless click of a PC cursor.

7 Billion Humans

Like its predecessor, the equally impressive Human Resource Machine , the $4.99 7 Billion Humans is simultaneously a tricky puzzler, a lightweight programming primer and a wry commentary on the future of employment.

The premise of the game is that robots do all the work, making humans feel worthless. The robots therefore have humans fill their days with mundane box-sorting challenges, directed by programming steps that you define. 

On a phone, 7 Billion Humans is fiddly. On an iPad, it’s great – funny, brain-bending and with the potential to teach you a thing or two, in more ways than you might first imagine.

There are two sides to this intriguing $4.99 match-three effort. The puzzles in Day Repeat Day are much like Bejeweled or Candy Crush, having you make a set number of matches within a limited number of moves. But there’s a messaging center as well.

Within that, a story plays out that finds you chatting with colleagues, friends and family, attempting to navigate a work/life balance in a world that doesn’t care much for life. Take your time with this one and breathe in its details — it’s a brilliantly pitched dark satire masquerading as a casual game.

The vaguely retro feel (albeit with modern-era graphics) continues through to the controls, which make it a cinch to drift around corners, giving you a fighting chance against unforgiving physics and tough computer opponents.

Crying Suns

You might think you’ve had a bad morning, but the protagonist of this $8.99 strategy game has just been woken, told his empire is likely gone, and informed that he died and is in fact a clone. It must be a Monday.

In Crying Suns, you figure out what’s going on, by bossing around your crew, taking in exposition, sending commandos on missions, and blowing up enemy ships. With a more defined structure than similar games, there’s a strong narrative here; and there’s replay value in chipping away at the story in subsequent attempts — and blowing up more bad guys, obviously .

FTL: Faster Than Light

In FTL: Faster Than Light, you’re trying to save the galaxy. Unfortunately, you’re being chased by folks dead set on your destruction. As a result, you’re constantly on guard and making life-or-death decisions in this $9.99 strategy title.

You can jump to new sectors of space, but this can land you in fraught battles. When in a scrap, you must prioritize your crew’s actions, ensuring your collective survival.

Fortunately, you can pause FTL to have a think. And during battles, the interface is ideally suited to iPad, even if you might not think that when your ship’s ablaze and you’ve no idea where your enemies are hiding.

Touchgrind Skate 2

Skateboard games on consoles give you a gamepad for controlling an on-screen avatar. In contrast, Touchgrind Skate 2 (free, with in-app purchases for unlocking new locations) gets you up close and personal with your board by having you use two fingers to guide it across the iPad screen..

In effect, your digits stand in for legs, with you gently tilting them to steer and using a range of gestures in a timely manner to perform show-off stunts. It’s clever and more freeform than pseudo sequels Touchgrind BMX and Touchgrind Scooter – although they are fun, too.

In Bad North: Jotunn Edition, battles are automatic and rely on you using cunning strategy. Place archers up high; have pikemen take on invaders whose weapons have less range. Over time, the situation evolves, for better (new weapons) or worse (dead commanders are gone for good). 

With each island being procedurally generated, every campaign is unique, making Bad North great value at $3.99.

Far: Lone Sails

There’s a surprising serenity about the dystopian world in Far: Lone Sails, a $3.99 iPad download. It’s just you and your colossal vehicle, struggling onward across a seabed dotted with the remains of what appears to be a lost civilization.

Whether that’s the case, you won’t know for sure. Far: Lone Sails begins by telling you nothing. You must figure out yourself how to fuel, move and upgrade your vehicle. Despite the constant micro-management, it’s meditative stuff — and the iPad lets you glimpse moments of beauty in the bleak landscape that passes you by.

If you’ve ever got grumpy at a complex intersection and thought you could do a better job of designing one, Freeways offers your chance to prove it. This superb $2.99 ‘interchange design simulator’ gives you entry/exit points and lets you get on with it.

Arrows denote traffic flow and density and early levels merely task you with connecting the dots. Eventually, you’re mired in multi-level spaghetti junctions from hell, causing miles-long tailbacks. With the iPad’s screen acreage, you’ve at least room to draw (and re-draw) and a fighting chance of success.

Genre mash-ups have a tendency to create something compelling — not least when two gameplay types that shouldn’t meld fashion something brilliant. That’s the case with freebie Salvagette, which combines bullet-hell shoot ’em ups with turn-based strategy.

Your aim in the single-screen arena is to ram your ship into enemies, which signal their intention to fire by way of blue halos. You have endless time to plot your pathways, and yet the game becomes surprisingly tense as the screen fills with projectiles.

It’s a bit of an exaggeration because a “skin” implies that other browsers just have a different look as compared to Safari.

That isn’t completely true.

The main reason why people make this comment comes down to a rendering engine called WebKit. WebKit is the underlying framework that Safari uses to display web pages. Apple’s policies for iOS and iPadOS require all browsers on these platforms to use WebKit as their rendering engine. This means that, at a fundamental level, all browsers on the iPad render web pages in the same way Safari does.

Let’s say you ran Chrome and Safari on your desktop. You might notice the same website looks different. That’s because Chrome uses the Blink rendering engine while Safari uses WebKit, but on the iPad, it’s all WebKit.

However, this doesn’t mean that other browsers are mere “skins” of Safari. They can still offer distinct features and functionalities that differentiate them from Safari. For example, they might provide different user interfaces, more extensive tab management, unique privacy tools, or integration with other services and platforms. These browsers also often have their own security measures and data sync systems, offering varied experiences in terms of privacy and cross-device compatibility.

Let’s see the special features of each browser.

Safari is the pre-installed browser on the iPad, so the immediate benefit is that you don’t have to install anything.

Online, you’d find comments that Safari is the most optimized browser for the iPad as compared to the others, but in practice, it’s difficult to notice the difference on a day-to-day basis.

What you’ll notice is the level of integration. If you are deeply tied into the Apple ecosystem, then you will gain additional benefits such as being able to access your passwords and other credentials stored in your iCloud.In addition, you can access your bookmarks, reading list and iCloud Tabs if you use Safari on other devices.

Some interesting features that I like include the ability to annotate web pages using the Markup tool. The Markup tool can be accessed by pressing the Share button and scrolling down. Markup takes a full-page screenshot and then a llows you to mark the page with your finger or your pen . This is useful for me because I sometimes have to write instructions on how to do certain things on a web page. It can also be useful for people who need to point out where corrections need to be made.

According to Statista, in May 2023, Chrome took 63% of the global market share for browsers, which means this is the main browser used by many people.

Using Chrome on iPad comes down to whether you use Chrome regularly on your other devices. If you do, then you will enjoy the integrated experience, where your passwords, history, and search terms are saved.

What I also liked is the “Send to Your Devices” option which allows you to easily share a webpage you are viewing on one device with your other devices where you are also logged into Chrome with the same Google account. Compared to Handoff, this allows you to send Chrome tabs to non-Apple devices.

Opera is an interesting browser and its main offering is the integrated ad blocker and VPN.

Opera comes with a built-in ad blocker which can enhance browsing speed and user experience. By default, it comes activated, so you might notice that your pages are much cleaner than before.

Additionally, its free, integrated VPN service might provide an extra layer of security and privacy, especially useful when browsing on public Wi-Fi networks. However, we would like to point out that Opera VPN gets mediocre scores from a lot of VPN review sites, so if you’re looking for a proper VPN, it’s worth checking out the competition.

Brave was the first option for browsers when I searched for “browsers” in the App Store. Not because they are extremely popular, but because they bought ads.

I’ve heard of Brave because people talk about how it’s a privacy-focused browser. I also found that Brave has a lot of useful tools to make your browsing experience smoother. For example,

• Brave Playlist

Brave Playlist is an interesting one. I added a YouTube video to Brave’s Playlist and then turned off WiFi, and it was still able to play the video even though I didn’t have any data.

Note that Brave’s integrated VPN is not free. The VPN service is provided by Guardian and costs $129.99 when paid annually or $12.99 when paid monthly.

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge is the pre-installed browser on Windows systems and so it deserves a look.

After testing the browsers above, I expected to be underwhelmed, but boy was I wrong.

One major reason to use Edge involves your Microsoft account. If you regularly use your Microsoft account to store passwords and other credentials, then Edge will have an edge over other browsers.

Furthermore, Edge is a pretty feature-rich browser — something I didn’t expect. Not only does Microsoft Edge has an adblock integrated, but what I really liked about it is its Read Aloud feature plus its Reading Mode feature. Combining these two will allow you to get articles read to you effectively.

For example, when I was reading the Washington Post, I would first press “Reading Mode” to get rid of headers, sidebars and other distractions, leaving only the article on the screen. Then, you can press “Read Aloud” to get the article read to you.

You can change the accents of the virtual readers. It’s amusing because you can get a French person to read an English article and hear the French accent come through. Edge’s Read Aloud has many accents, including English from various parts of the Anglosphere (not just the typical UK, US, Canada, NZ, and Australia).

Mozilla Firefox

Firefox is a browser that is great if you use Firefox on your computers because you can have a seamless experience when logged into your Mozilla account.

Syncing accounts between my computer and iPad was easy because all I had to do was scan a QR code on my iPad.

Firefox has a Reading Mode which removes headers, footers and other distractions, leaving only the article on your screen. You can also place articles you want to read later into your Reading List, which is synced to your Mozilla account.

I liked the Synchronized Tabs feature. Once signed in, tabs that I open on my computer are synced to my iPad . This is convenient if you want a seamless experience between devices.

Firefox was created by Mozilla and in the app’s description on the Apple Store, they emphasize, “Don’t settle for a browser produced by giant, profit-driven, data-hoarding tech companies. Firefox is the obvious choice for independent, ethical tech that respects your privacy…”

Indeed, most mainstream browsers are built by large corporations. Apple makes Safari. Google makes Chrome. Microsoft has the Edge.

But this begs the question — if you care about privacy, why not try the more privacy-focused Firefox Focus?

Firefox Focus

Firefox Focus is like an app that’s permanently in incognito/private browsing mode.

It’s the most barebones browser, though. Everything on this browser is geared towards shorter-term use. For example, once you close the app , all your browsing history gets deleted. Meaning no saved logins.

You get a trash bin icon on your toolbar. Pressing that clears your browser history.

You don’t get bookmarks or account syncing.

You get an adblocker, though.

I’m not sure who this is for. Firefox Focus remains a specialized browser meant for people who want a specific app for browsing stuff and automatically deleting everything afterwards.

Of course, solely relying on a browser to create anonymity is not enough, you need to take further steps to conceal your identity if you really want to remain truly private.

Comparison and Recommendations

If you had to choose a browser, here are some considerations you should make.

Where Are Your Logins Stored?

After testing these browsers, I have come to realize that one main reason why you’d use one browser over another comes down to where you store most of your information such as logins.

I use Google Chrome on my computer, so naturally most of my logins and preferences are stored on my Google account. Therefore, Google Chrome is the most convenient for this aspect.

However, if your information is stored elsewhere, then you can use the corresponding browser. Here’s a table,

Special Features To Consider

There’s nothing stopping you from using multiple browsers on a device, so you can install multiple and enjoy all the benefits.

For example, if you need an adblocker, you can use Edge, Brave, Firefox Focus or Opera. All of these have adblockers pre-installed. But if you want to go further and get rid of cookie consent screens, Brave can do that.

Brave is great for people who like YouTube because you can add videos to your playlist and get them downloaded for offline watching. This is a pretty handy feature that I haven’t seen elsewhere.

Edge has an impressive Read Aloud feature that can be good if you like listening to your web pages. Combined with the Reading Mode filter, Edge can read pages aloud efficiently.

Opera’s and Brave’s VPN feature is debatable. If you’re going to pay for a VPN, then you have many more options than using Brave’s integrated VPN, especially considering VPNs vary in speed, privacy and features. Opera’s free VPN has its flaws, and you should consider whether you can deal with them.

Safari is a special case because it comes pre-installed with your iPad. I really liked the Markup feature which takes a full-page screenshot and allows you to annotate the screenshot. This can help you point out specific areas on a web page to another person.

“Plain” Browsers

Chrome and Firefox are as plain as it gets when it comes to browsers. I think the main reason why you’d use Chrome is because you have a Google account and most of your information is stored there. It’s convenient.

The same reason can be applied to Firefox, except instead of having an account with one of the biggest tech companies out there, your information is stored with Mozilla. Oh, and Firefox has a nice Synchronized Tab feature. Firefox Focus isn’t far off, but it’s a special browser that’s permanently in private browsing mode where all your browsing data gets deleted right after you’ve exited.

Doing this review has taught me that some browsers have specific uses. You could very well just have that one browser for that one purpose. For example, I might keep a copy of Chrome, Edge and Brave.

Chrome would be my main browser because I store personal data with Google and use Chrome on my main computer.

I’ll have Brave because of its offline media playlist feature.

And finally, I’ll have Edge, for the rare occasions when I need a passage read out loud.

They’re all free, so there’s nothing to lose except storage space.

Apple iPhone, iPad and iPod touch are supported through the Safari browser as part of a public test, with tweaks and further enhancements to come based on your experience.

How to play Stadia games on iOS

Although you still cannot play Stadia games through the native Stadia app for iOS, you can run them through the Safari browser on your device - as long as you have iOS 14.3 or greater installed.

Here's how to get it working:

- First, open Safari on your iPhone or iPad, head to stadia.google.com and sign in.

- You will then see a prompt saying that you can now play in the browser. Hit "Got it".

- Now, look at the bottom of the screen (on iPhone) or top-right (on iPad) to see the share button. Tap on it.

- In the share menu, scroll down to "Add to Home Screen" and tap on it.

- You will now see a new screen explaining that a Stadia icon will be added to your homescreen. Hit "Add".

- This will add an app icon on your device, which you can move wherever you like.

- Tap on the new Stadia icon and you will be presented with a new Google sign-in form. Sign into the Google account used for your Stadia membership and bingo, you'll get the full Stadia experience on iOS - much like the dedicated app for Android.

You can use third-party Bluetooth controllers with Stadia on iOS, such as the DualShock 4 or Xbox Wireless Controller. Alternatively, you can use the Stadia controller, although you will need to set it up through the dedicated Stadia app first.

Linia Stripes

Linia Stripes is the epitome of the chill-out puzzler. It exists in a universe of endless geometric patterns, and tasks you with removing stripes in order from shortest to longest. 

In less expert hands, this would be a five-minute wonder – a throwaway game to which you’d never return. But the execution here makes the game captivating. Visually – and especially on the iPad’s larger display – each scene is like a slice of modern art. And the sound is great too, piano notes playing as you tap each piece and craft a personal ambient soundtrack.

If that still sounds slight, it is. But the game’s nature is such that it’s perfect to dip into for a relaxing session. And should you want more, one-off IAP payments let you remove the ads, unlock a speed-oriented Pro mode, and explore additional pattern packs.

Our favorite iPad arcade games, including brawlers and fighting games, auto-runners, party games, pinball, and retro classics.

Mr. Traffic

Mr. Traffic finds a conductor directing vehicles at a terrifyingly dangerous crossroads – and presumably wishing someone would install traffic lights. Your job is to avoid the inevitable pile-up for as long as possible, by tapping cars when it’s safe for them to go – or when they need to brake.

Long-time iPad gamers might grumble this is nothing new. But Mr. Traffic adds character and flair rarely seen in this kind of game, from its gorgeous cartoon visuals to random incidents where you’ll see UFOs blaze across the screen or ghosts being pursued by a famous station wagon.

On iPad, it’s particularly good, with the squarish display affording you more warning regarding vehicles appearing from the side, and the larger screen area helping with accuracy when you’re dealing with a dozen impatient virtual drivers.

Super Fowlst 2

Super Fowlst 2 is the third entry in a series of free iPad games (following Fowlst and Super Fowlst ) that finds a heroic chicken saving the world from a demon invasion. You tap the sides of the screen to flap your principled poultry, whereupon they arc upwards until gravity makes itself known. Roaming enemies are defeated by bonking them on the head.

The game’s speed, odd control method, and level design - peppering the landscape with explosive crates full of bees, spike-filled corridors, and literal pinball table components - make for frenetic and chaotic play. Visually, the game’s a treat as well, with delicate pixel art and plenty of character.

There’s longevity, too, in being able to upgrade your chicken (so it can poop bombs and gain a downwards-smash move), and procedurally generated levels that ensure you never quite get the same game twice.

Astalo finds your tiny fighter atop a square hunk of land with sheer drops at every edge. It’s also packed full of monsters determined to tear you limb from limb. If you don’t want to die horribly, you might need to get a bit stabby…

To attack, you drag a finger in the direction you want your fighter to head, and let go to watch them scythe through skeletons and other foes. The pace is frenetic - not least in endless mode, which resembles arcade classic Robotron in its relentless, claustrophobic nature.

Similarly, Astalo typically leaves you staring at a game over screen in short order. But story and endless modes alike provide plenty of replay value, and the game works especially well on iPad due to your finger not covering up half the screen while you swipe for your very survival.

Fancade is a game construction kit that puts its money where its mouth is, since all of the mini-games within were made using the app itself.

This is quite an achievement, given what you get. There are over 50 game styles, which echo fare found elsewhere on iPad, such as auto-runners, puzzlers, racing games, and an architectural path-finding title that resembles the creator’s own Mekorama .

If you so desire, you can use Fancade to create your own miniature masterpieces, either starting from scratch or by using one of the built-in kits. A gallery lets you delve into what others have made as well.

Even if you never make your own games, Fancade is a must-have, offering countless levels of bite-sized gaming bliss. And taken as a whole, it’s one of the most impressive and ambitious freebies the App Store is ever likely to see.

Oddman is a high-intensity brawler, set in a world of strange bouncy protagonists, floating islands, and instant death. Like a deranged take on sumo, you fling your character at your opponents, trying to knock them to their doom.

Although you’re hardly equipped with a wide range of moves – nor any real semblance of subtlety – Oddman attempts to add variety to your life. Over time, you encounter new types of foe – including massive bosses – and different environments that shake up how you approach bouts. It’s immediate and very silly – although mastery takes a while, and you’re never more than an errant swipe from disaster.

Neatly, this free iPad game moves beyond solo play, too. You can pit your swiping digit against a friend, on same-device two-player brawls that make good use of the iPad display’s relative acres.

The King of Fighters ALLSTAR

Free iPad game The King of Fighters ALLSTAR comes across like a restless take on Double Dragon or Final Fight. This means you mostly duff up all manner of bad guys along side-scrolling streets, prior to laying into a big bad.

Like other King of Fighters titles, you have a team, so you can tag in others from your trio during battles. The game includes arena-style modes as well, unlocked when you’ve worked through enough of the story.

On iPhone, this game’s button-mashing is fiddly, but it works well on the iPad’s larger display, which also lets the lovely visuals shine. Newbies are catered for with ‘auto’ movement, but veterans can opt for ‘manual’, which echoes console fighting games, and provides far more nuance than the comparatively canned fare found in the Marvel and Transformers mobile brawlers.

Snake Rivals

Snake Rivals comes across like classic mobile title Snake got smashed into Fortnite . Dozens of reptiles are dumped into an arena, and the last snake standing – er, slithering – wins.

There are three modes to pit your tubular terror against: Classic allows endless respawns so you can learn the ropes and build tactics; Gold Rush is all about obliterating other snakes to turn them into gold to grab; and Battle Royale has you take out the opposition while the arena gradually shrinks to a tiny island surrounded by lava.

Although a simple arcade game, Snake Rivals works particularly well with an iPad flat on a table, giving you the space to spot rivals, without your fingers obscuring the display. Its freemium aspects aren’t too venomous either – largely being limited to optional snake customization.

Knight Brawl

Knight Brawl is to 2D fighters what Anchorman is to journalism. That is, Knight Brawl is absurd, silly, and entertaining, but it’s very knowingly not trying to be realistic – and it’s all the better for it.

Side-on battles have knights attempt to relieve opponents of their armor before delivering the final blow. Only the controls and physics – like in Colin Lane’s other games – make for an anarchic experience where characters bounce around like they’re on trampolines.

If that was all you got, this would have been fun – a medieval take on Rowdy Wrestling , with pointy weapons. But along with multiple battle modes, there are also missions where you raid castles and steal bling. This isn’t just a throwaway gag, then, but a game for the long-term – a serious slice of iPad comedy. 

Williams Pinball

Williams Pinball brings a selection of classic pinball tables to your iPad, and then adds animated remastering – at least, if you’re prepared to work for it.

Initially, you just get to unlock one table for unlimited play. (Pick a good one – Attack from Mars, The Getaway, or Medieval Madness – because you’ll be playing it a lot.) Through daily challenges, you’ll then slowly acquire the parts to gradually unlock other tables – unless you fancy splashing out on IAP to buy them outright.

This probably sounds a bit awful, but the truth is you’re ‘grinding’ by playing pinball. Also, the challenges often give you unlimited balls, so you can learn the tables. Stay the course, and eventually you can boost these already top-notch recreations with tough pro-level physics and animated components.

Fly THIS! echoes early App Store hit Flight Control, having you draw paths for planes to follow. But whereas the older title was an endless test that relentlessly ramped up the panic, this newer game feels more strategic and bite-sized.

The planes are fewer in number, but the maps are more claustrophobic. Also, you’re not just making planes land – instead, you ferry passengers between airports. Further complications come in the form of weather, and massive mountains you really don’t want to fly planes into.

Because each level has a set points target, Fly THIS! is great for playing in short bursts as well. In all, it’s a smart reimagining of a long-lost iPad favorite, which in many ways is more appealing than the game that presumably inspired it.

Beat Street

Beat Street is a love letter to classic scrolling brawlers, where a single, determined hero pummels gangs of evil-doers and saves the day. In Beat Street, giant vermin are terrorizing Toko City, and will only stop when you’ve repeatedly punched them in the face.

On iPhone, Beat Street is a surprisingly successful one-thumb effort, but on iPad you’re better off playing in landscape. With your left thumb, you can dance about, and then use your right to hammer the screen (and the opposition).

The iPad’s large display shows off the great pixel art, but the fighty gameplay’s the real star – from you taking on far too many opponents at once to gleefully beating one about the head with a baseball bat. It turns out they do make ’em like they used to after all.

Up the Wall

Up the Wall is an auto-runner with an edge. Or rather, lots of edges. Because instead of being played on a single plane, Up the Wall regularly has you abruptly turn 90-degree corners, some of which find you zooming up vertical walls.

The speed and snap twists make for a disorienting experience, but the game’s design is extremely smart where, most notably, each challenge is finite and predefined. Up the Wall isn’t about randomness and luck, but mastering layouts, and aiming for that perfect run.

It nails everything else, too. The game sounds great, and has sharp, vibrant visuals, with imaginative environments. It’s not often you’re frantically directing a burger in an abstract fever dream of milkshakes and ketchup bottles, nor a skull in a world of flames, lava, and guitars.

Silly Walks

Silly Walks is a one-thumb arcade game, featuring wobbling foodstuffs braving the hell of nightmarish kitchens (and, later, gardens and gyms), in order to free fruity chums who’ve been cruelly caged.

The hero of the hour – initially a pineapple cocktail – rotates on one foot. Tapping the screen plants a foot, causing him to rotate on the other foot and changing the direction of rotation. Charitably, this could be called a step, and with practice, it’s possible to put together a reasonable dodder.

And you’ll need to. Although early levels only require you to not fall off of tables, pretty soon you’re dealing with meat pulverizers, hero-slicing knives, and psychotic kitchenware in hot pursuit.

It’s admittedly all a little one-level – Silly Walks reveals almost all in its initial levels – but smart design, superb visuals, and a unique control method make it well worth a download.

Step 1: Open Safari

There’s no dedicated ‘Stadia’ mobile app for accessing the service’s games, so there are no apps or extensions to download and install, however, the platform runs in the Safari browser. For this reason, it is called a ‘web app’. In this guide, you will be able to learn how to play Google Stadia games on your iPad and iPhone in the Safari browser.

How to Play Google Stadia on iPhone & iPad in Safari (2023)

Some owners of an iOS mobile device interested in Google Stadia may have noticed the availability of the “Stadia” app in the App Store but this is not for playing games, only for setting up a new Stadia controller and adding games to your personal library. Currently, playing on an iPhone or iPad is only possible via the web app accessible via the Safari web browser.

The requirements to play Stadia on iPhone and iPad via web app are:

• A Stadia account with at least one game in your personal collection.
• iOS 14.3 or later installed on the iPhone/iPad.

To have at least one game in your personal Stadia collection, all you need to do is have a Stadia account (or create one if you don’t have one, it’s free) and purchase a game in the Stadia Store or you can subscribe to Stadia Pro to redeem one or more games between those included in the subscription.

Those who meet the requirements listed above can open the Safari web browser on their iPhone or iPad, visit stadia.com, and sign in to their Stadia account. For the best experience on iPhone or iPad, you can add the Stadia web app shortcut to your device’s Home screen. Doing so is very simple, just follow the steps below:

• After opening stadia.com in Safari, when the Stadia Home screen appears, just select the ‘Share’ sharing icon (this icon on iPhone is located at the bottom of the phone screen, while on iPad at the top right of the tablet screen).
• Then select the “Add to Home screen” option.
• You only need to follow this procedure once if you want to add the shortcut to the Stadia web app to the Home screen of your device.
• At the end of the procedure, the Stadia web app icon will appear on the Home screen of your device, then just tap it to start Stadia in your web browser when you feel like playing.

Adding the web app icon to the Home screen of the device is not mandatory to be able to play, it is just a way to avoid having to open Safari every time and connect to Stadia.com: pressing the icon on the Home screen accesses the web app directly.

It is possible to play Stadia via the official web app using mobile data, but the advice is to play with the device connected to a WiFi network so as not to use up all the gigabytes of the SIM data plan in a short time (unless you have an unlimited and fast data plan). iPadOS 18 Beta 2 Includes Alternative App Stores and Other EU Changes

Apple today announced that the second beta of iPadOS 18 extends alternative app marketplaces and other app-related changes to the iPad in the EU.

The other changes include alternative payment options in the App Store, a default web browser selection screen in Safari, the ability for web browsers to use web engines other than Apple's WebKit on the iPhone and iPad, and more. Apple's existing terms extend to the iPad, including the Core Technology Fee for alternative app marketplaces.

iPadOS 18 is currently in beta for developers, with a public beta to follow in July. The update should be widely released in September.

I disagree with but can understand the arguments for alternate app stores. But the redirecting payments for apps downloaded from the Apple App store seems akin to walking into Walmart and grabbing a bag of peanut M&Ms and then walking out without paying Walmart cause you went online and earlier and purchased the M&Ms from Mars Candy . ?‍♂️?

Alternative app stores work only if you actively seek out and download/install an alternative marketplace app from Apple's App Store or directly from the website of the alternative app marketplace developer. https://support.apple.com/en-us/118110 Alternative app marketplaces are unique kinds of iOS apps that you can use to install other apps on your iPhone. Users in the European Union can install an alternative app marketplace on iPhone by downloading it directly from the website of the alternative app marketplace developer. By not installing an app for an alternative marketplace, you will not enable the feature. In other words, the feature is by default disabled unless you enable it by installing an app for an alternative marketplace.

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA  Apple today previewed iOS 18 , a major release that features more customization options, the biggest redesign ever of the Photos app, new ways for users to manage their inbox in Mail, Messages over satellite, and so much more. Users will be able to arrange apps and widgets in any open space on the Home Screen, customize the buttons at the bottom of the Lock Screen, and quickly access more controls in Control Center. Photo libraries are automatically organized in a new single view in Photos, and helpful new collections keep favorites easily accessible. Mail simplifies the inbox by sorting email into categories using on-device intelligence, and all-new text effects come to iMessage. Powered by the same groundbreaking technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, users can now communicate over satellite in the Messages app when a cellular or Wi-Fi connection isn’t available. 1

iOS 18 also introduces Apple Intelligence , the personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad, and Mac that combines the power of generative models with personal context to deliver intelligence that’s incredibly useful and relevant. 2 Built with privacy from the ground up, Apple Intelligence is deeply integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. iPhone users have new ways to customize the Home Screen, Lock Screen, and Control Center. Users can now arrange apps and widgets in any open space on the Home Screen, including placing them right above the dock for easy access or perfectly framing a wallpaper. App icons and widgets can take on a new look with a dark or tinted effect, and users can make them appear larger to create the experience that is perfect for them.

Control Center has been redesigned to provide easier access to many of the things users do every day, and it gets new levels of customization and flexibility. The redesign delivers quick access to new groups of a user’s most-utilized controls, such as media playback, Home controls, and connectivity, as well as the ability to easily swipe between each. Users can now add controls from supported third-party apps into Control Center to quickly unlock a vehicle or jump right into capturing content for social media — all from one place. The new controls gallery displays the full set of available options, and users can customize how the controls are laid out, including adjusting them to the ideal size and creating entirely new groups.

For the first time, users can now switch the controls at the bottom of the Lock Screen, including choosing from options available in the controls gallery or removing them entirely. With the Action button available on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, users can quickly invoke controls available in the gallery.

Photos receives its biggest-ever redesign to help users easily find and relive special moments. A simplified, single view displays a familiar grid, and new collections help users browse by themes without having to organize content into albums. Plus, collections can be pinned to keep favorites easily accessible. A new carousel view presents highlights that update each day and feature favorite people, pets, places, and more. Autoplaying content throughout the app brings libraries to life, so past moments can be enjoyed while browsing. Because each user’s photo library is unique, the app is customizable, so users can organize collections, pin collections to access frequently, and include what’s most important to them in the carousel view.

iMessage receives all-new text effects that bring conversations to life by amplifying any letter, word, phrase, or emoji with dynamic, animated appearances. Users can better express tone by adding formatting like bold, underline, italics, and strikethrough. Tapbacks expand to include any emoji or sticker, and now users can compose a message and schedule to send it at a later time.

When messaging contacts who do not have an Apple device, the Messages app now supports RCS for richer media and more reliable group messaging compared to SMS and MMS.

iOS 18 introduces Messages via satellite for the times when cellular and Wi-Fi connections aren’t available. Powered by the same groundbreaking technology as existing iPhone satellite capabilities, Messages via satellite automatically prompts users to connect to their nearest satellite right from the Messages app to send and receive texts, emoji, and Tapbacks over iMessage and SMS. 3 With Dynamic Island, users always know when they are connected to a satellite. Because iMessage was built to protect user privacy, iMessages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted.

Later this year, Mail will introduce new ways for users to manage their inbox and stay up to date. On-device categorization organizes and sorts incoming email into Primary for personal and time-sensitive emails, Transactions for confirmations and receipts, Updates for news and social notifications, and Promotions for marketing emails and coupons. Mail also features a new digest view that pulls together all of the relevant emails from a business, allowing users to quickly scan for what’s important in the moment.

Safari, the world’s fastest browser, 4 now offers an even easier way to discover information on the web with Highlights and a redesigned Reader experience. Using machine learning, Safari can surface key information about a webpage. For example, users can review a summary to get the gist of an article; quickly see the location of a restaurant, hotel, or landmark; or listen to an artist’s track right from an article about the song or album. Reader has been redesigned to offer even more ways to enjoy articles without distraction, with a summary and table of contents included for longer articles.

Building on the foundation of Keychain, which was first introduced more than 25 years ago, the new Passwords app makes it easy for users to access their passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and verification codes. The app also includes alerts for users regarding common weaknesses, such as passwords that are easily guessed or used multiple times and those that appear in known data leaks.

iOS 18 gives users even more control with tools to manage who can see their apps, how contacts are shared, and how their iPhone connects to accessories.

Locked and hidden apps offer users peace of mind that information they want to keep private, such as app notifications and content, will not inadvertently be seen by others. Users can now lock an app; and for additional privacy, they can hide an app, moving it to a locked, hidden apps folder. When an app is locked or hidden, content like messages or emails inside the app are hidden from search, notifications, and other places across the system.

iOS 18 puts users in control by letting them choose to share only specific contacts with an app. In addition, developers now have a way to seamlessly connect third-party accessories with iPhone without letting an app see all the other devices on a user’s network, keeping a user’s devices private and making pairing seamless.

Deeply integrated into iOS 18 and built with privacy from the ground up, Apple Intelligence unlocks new ways for users to enhance their writing and communicate more effectively. With brand-new systemwide Writing Tools built into iOS 18, users can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text nearly everywhere they write, including Mail, Notes, Pages, and third-party apps.

New image capabilities make communication and self-expression even more fun. With Image Playground, users can create playful images in seconds, choosing from three styles: Animation, Illustration, or Sketch. Image Playground is easy to use, built right into apps like Messages, and also available in a dedicated app.

Memories in Photos lets users create the stories they want to see just by typing a description. Apple Intelligence will pick out the best photos and videos based on the description, craft a storyline with chapters based on themes identified from the photos, and arrange them into a movie with its own narrative arc. In addition, a new Clean Up tool can identify and remove distracting objects in the background of a photo — without accidentally altering the subject.

With the power of Apple Intelligence, Siri takes a major step forward, becoming even more natural, contextually relevant, and personal. Users can type to Siri, and switch between text and voice to communicate with Siri in whatever way feels right for the moment.

With Private Cloud Compute, Apple sets a new standard for privacy in AI, with the ability to flex and scale computational capacity between on-device processing, and larger, server-based models that run on dedicated Apple silicon servers. When requests are routed to Private Cloud Compute, data is not stored or made accessible to Apple and is only used to fulfill the user’s requests, and independent experts can verify this privacy.

Additionally, access to ChatGPT is integrated into Siri and systemwide Writing Tools across Apple’s platforms, allowing users to access its expertise — as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities — without needing to jump between tools.

The developer beta of iOS 18 is available through the Apple Developer Program at developer.apple.com starting today, and a public beta will be available through the Apple Beta Software Program next month at beta.apple.com . iOS 18 will be available this fall as a free software update for iPhone Xs and later. Apple Intelligence will be available in beta on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English, as part of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia this fall.
