Setting sail on a cruise is a guaranteed good time no matter where you go. But, if we had to suggest a destination, the Eastern Caribbean would be high on the list. With endless sunshine, white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and delicious foods, it’s a corner of the world worth visiting on your next cruise getaway.

There are dozens of cruise lines that visit this region, so all you need to do is figure out how long you can travel and find the itinerary that best fits your interests. Need a little more help? We've covered the basics and rounded up 10 Eastern Caribbean cruises to check out for your next tropical getaway.

What's the difference between an Eastern Caribbean cruise and a Western Caribbean cruise?

Many beautiful Caribbean islands are worth visiting at one point or another. However, if you’re particularly interested in exploring the Eastern Caribbean, it’s important to know which islands that region includes. The exact places you visit on an Eastern Caribbean cruise will vary depending on the cruise line and itinerary you choose, but Eastern Caribbean cruises tend to include destinations like the U.S. Virgin Islands, the British Virgin Islands, St. Kitts, St. Maarten, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic. A Western Caribbean cruise itinerary might include stops in Jamaica, Mexico, or Belize, to name just a few destinations.

When is the best time to go on an Eastern Caribbean cruise?

Weather is warm all year long in the Eastern Caribbean, so the main thing to consider is hurricane season, which could derail your cruise trip with cancellations and last-minute itinerary changes. Hurricane season typically falls between early June and late November, so winter is a great time to take a cruise and trade chilly temperatures at home for balmy Caribbean weather.

Ft. Lauderdale has 23 miles of beaches, 300 miles of inland waterways and swimming pools galore, but immersing yourself in this city doesn't require a drop of water. Dive into a culture as deep as any ocean, a culture characterized by Seminoles and Broadway shows, golf and whimsical water taxis, fine cuisine and tasty jazz. And just like the horizon here, the list of attractions goes on and on.

The fortress of El Morro guards the harbor against long-gone Sir Francis Drake and his British privateers. Embarking on an Eastern Caribbean Cruise: A Personal Guide

W ith the sea as my second home and over 50 cruises to reminisce about, I’m more at home on water than on land. For seasoned sailors and landlubbers alike, I’ve gathered a treasure trove of tips for an Eastern Caribbean cruise—a region where turquoise waters meet diverse ports, from Amber Cove to the storied streets of San Juan.

Sailing Through Seasons: Picking the Perfect Time

Cruising knows no off-season, with the sun-kissed decks welcoming travelers year-round. There are now even waiting lists for many US ports. The fall and winter seasons promise tempting deals and breezy weather—the perfect backdrop for your sea adventure, but remember that hurricane season looms through October.

Choosing Your Nautical Steed

From the grandeur of Holland America to the family-friendly vibe of Carnival, I’ve walked the gangways of the crème de la crème on many an Eastern Caribbean cruise—including Costa , NCL, Royal Caribbean , Windstar , Disney , and Celebrity . Each brand holds fast to its unique charm and sets sail to meet a mariner’s every need.

Once your voyage is charted, the quest to curate your land excursions begins. Perhaps the serenity or fun of the ship is all you seek—a floating sanctuary where time is measured in sunsets and meals you don’t have to cook or clean up after. But for adventurers yearning to tread less familiar paths, allow me to be your compass as you wander ashore.

Amber Cove: A Dominican Delight

In the heart of the Dominican Republic lies Amber Cove , a port that dazzles without a single step beyond its bounds. Yet, beyond the gates lie the island’s true wonders. Shop to your heart’s content, dine in savory splendor at modestly priced eateries, or plunge into a pool complex where the fee is included in your cruise vacation.

Zip, Swim, or Hammock in the Cove

Be bold and zipline over the crystalline waters, claim a beach hut painted with vivid colors or sway in a hammock’s gentle embrace. If exploration beckons, the DR’s cultural landscape awaits—from touring the iconic Amber Museum to visiting the historic churches or spending the afternoon at a five-star resort soaking up its amenities.

There’s Cabaret Beach for the sunseekers—with plenty of waves and golden sands. Or perhaps the thrill of natural rock water slides at Rio de Damajagua calls to you.

In Puerto Plata, step into the local rhythm at Independence Square, where the town comes to life in a lovely juxtaposition of old and new. There are many souvenir opportunities here, including excellent street vendors’ artworks.

Bahamas Bliss: Half Moon Cay and Beyond

The Bahamas are a constellation of island retreats, each shining with its own light on your Eastern Caribbean cruise. On Eleuthera, Princess Cruises offers a secluded slice of paradise; at Half Moon Cay, Holland America invites you to a private cruise ship sanctuary.

Seize the day with outdoor escapades, refueling with a beachside feast of sizzling grills and extraordinary delights—all on the house. What’s included? A typical beach lunch features jerk or BBQ meats, vegetables, ice cream, fruit, burgers, and hot dogs.

Another option is to stroll the shores with a drink in hand or paddle through azure waves. Have you ever wanted your hair braided? This is the place to do so.

A Private Paradise

On these private sands, choose your adventure—go cycling, rent a dune buggy, seek sun shelter in a clamshell, or go paddling among the shimmering shoals. I love renting the foam mats to float in the ocean, allowing maximum sun. Be cautious and reapply sunscreen quite often to avoid burning.

Lounge chairs are provided free of charge. And there are designated swimming areas. Drink in the sun or indulge in a cabana’s luxury, flanked by soft white sands, before picking up some authentic souvenirs at one of the island kiosks.

Castaway Cay: Disney’s Caribbean Crown

Castaway Cay is more than a port—it’s a splash of Disney magic amid the Caribbean blues. Every detail is steeped in enchantment, from island 5Ks to Christmas decorations that rival Santa’s workshop.

Beyond providing all the island indulgences, Disney’s jewel outshines the rest with a signature blend of joy and creativity that only the masters of imagination can deliver. In other words, Disney’s private island is the best. It’s even more fun to visit when it is decorated for Christmas.

Pro Tip : Remember to pick up exclusive trading pins at this port of call.

Grand Turk’s Barefoot Bliss

Imagine the perfect day when ocean waves kiss white sandy shores and nature’s palette comes to life—a reality in Grand Turk. Though it spans just seven square miles, this gem offers more than meets the eye. I’ve visited multiple times on cruises and land trips, and it is a vacation destination I’d recommend repeatedly.

Grand Turk’s Margaritaville (the largest in the Caribbean) awaits with its inviting pool and upbeat rhythms. It’s a place to unwind or mingle to your heart’s content—all at no cost. It’s a haven where chill tropical cocktails, more fun served at the swim-up bar, and leisure reading under the warm sun are daily norms.

Adventure beckons with dune buggy thrills and wildlife encounters—wild horses and donkeys may stroll by as you trek towards the island’s historic weathered lighthouse or on the opposite side of the island. Two other adventures I always enjoy are the Gibbs Cay stingray encounter and visiting the Salt House Museum.

Indulge in underwater escapades like scuba and snorkeling or reel in the excitement with a fishing expedition; Grand Turk is all about the vibe of island life.

Puerto Rico’s Colonial Charm

Over fifteen years, I’ve watched San Juan, Puerto Rico , transform its streetscape, enhancing the past’s splendor with the present’s touches. Wander this gorgeous city, where a local café invites you to savor tapas and sip refreshing mojitos at places like Rosa de Triano.

Experience a tapestry of taste and history through the ‘Flavors of Old San Juan Food Tour.’ For the memory-makers, the monumental forts stand tall, safeguarding stories and stamper’s delight for National Park Passport bearers.

From skies reflecting in glass-bottom kayaks to trails best seen from horseback, San Juan is where past and present dance harmoniously on your Eastern Caribbean cruise.

St. Kitts: Nature’s Masterpiece

Nestled in the Lesser Antilles, St. Kitts, paired with Nevis, paints a portrait of natural majesty. Lush mountains backdrop historic fortresses and the sugarcane heritage stretching under clear blue skies. Walk through time in the museum dedicated to Alexander Hamilton and marvel at the unmatched colonial architecture setting St. Kitts apart.

St. Maarten/St. Martin’s Dual Delight

A unique twofold nation island, St. Maarten/St. Martin mesmerizes with its blend of culture and beachside allure. Philipsburg reflects the Dutch spirit through its charming buildings and sandy retreats like the famous Orient Beach, with its eclectic mix of sunbathers—an invisible border’s subtle reminder of the distinct experience awaiting on either side.

The town of Marigot shifts the mood to French chic, where designer labels and award-winning dining become the day’s focus. I adore both sides, but the pulse of tourists tends to favor St. Maarten’s shores.

St. Thomas: The Pinnacle of Paradise

St. Thomas, with its notorious pledge to pirate tales and luxurious hotels, consistently captures the heart of the Caribbean seeker. Ascend the famous Mountain Top for its iconic banana daiquiri and panorama that’s beyond Instagrammable. This would mark the spot of one of the best photo op coordinates in the world.

Magen’s Bay, lauded globally, boasts a shoreline that could rival any artist’s canvas. The ocean calls for exploration here via catamaran, scuba, or snorkeling.

I’ve been to the island so often that I like to walk into town (Charlotte Amalie), browse the shops, have a tasty lunch at the Greenhouse Restaurant & Bar, and check out the open-air markets with beautiful jewelry. Larimar is a stone abundant in the USVI and makes an excellent purchase for you or your loved one.

St. John offers a quieter excursion. Less-trodden paths lead to stellar waterfront mansions and the allure of ivory sands that beckon travelers back time and again. It used to be my favorite of the three US Virgin Islands, but I have not been there since Hurricane Irma devastated it in 2017.

Set Sail with Confidence all new

An Eastern Caribbean cruise is a voyage through cultures, flavors, and thrills—a canvas where your story is painted in ocean shades. My journeys are shared to recount and inspire your travels over horizons near and far.

Bon Voyage!

Caribbean Princess Itineraries

Caribbean princess review, review of caribbean princess.

The 2004-built Caribbean Princess cruise ship is the 6th Grand-class Princess Cruises liner, with sisterships Crown , Diamond , Golden (Pacific Adventure) , Grand , Emerald , Ruby , Star (Pacific Encounter) and Sapphire .

The vessel (IMO number 9215490) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310423000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Caribbean Princess cruise ship

The 2600-passenger ship Caribbean Princess underwent a major drydock refit in early 2009 when were added facilities available on the younger fleet mates Crown, Emerald and Ruby. Now passengers spend hours sitting in the cosy, patio-style seating places, sipping coffee, reading, playing board games and watching occasional performers, ranging from a Cirque-type cube-spinner to a BMX biker. The new Piazza-Vines Wine Bar is the place to try over thirty wines by the glass while snacking on artisan cheeses, sushi and tapas. Of the changes, the most remarkable and appreciated, is the transformation of the former atrium into a new 3-deck-high, street-cafe-style Piazza - home to the International Cafe (a combination bakery, deli and coffee shop), Vines Wine & Seafood Bar, the Internet Cafe & Library, and an amusement zone.

Decks and Cabins

Most Caribbean Princess staterooms (1569 total, in 34 grades) are 170-ft2 balcony cabins (675). Almost 80% of the outside accommodations have private step-out balconies. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 25. The largest accommodations are the Grand Suites (615 ft2 / 57 m2 with terrace sized 115 ft2 / 11 m2).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 9 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Caribbean Princess features three dining rooms, all with twinkling lights on their ceilings and tasteful, Caribbean-themed menu. The Palm is for fixed-seating dining, while Island and Coral are for passengers who have chosen "Anytime Dining". Reservations are available but are not required. Coral also welcomes guests for waiter-service breakfast and lunch. Rotating menu options include soups, appetizers, mains and desserts. There are also signature pasta and choices like Caesar salad and salmon. The healthy Lotus Spa selections are low in sodium and fat. Cafe Caribe and Horizon Court look identical and are open all day long. The Horizon section serves as a lido buffet restaurant and features breakfast buffets. Lunch choices may include unusual dishes like peanut butter sandwiches and fried bananas.

Follows the complete list of Caribbean Princess restaurants and food bars.

  • Island Restaurant (ship's aft Dining Room; dinner only - offers “Anytime Dining” between 5:30 p.m. -10 p.m.)

In April 2024 Princess Cruises announced that starting September 14th (2024) fleetwide would be introduced 3 distinct main dining/dinner table service options – Traditional, Reservable, and Walk-in Anytime. By the new program (introduced with Sun Princess) on each ship are allocated 3 separate dining rooms - one for Traditional dining (offering early and late dinner seating), one with Reservable times, and one for Walk-in Anytime (open-seating). The new options are integrated with the OceanNow service, allowing anything to be ordered anytime, and delivered anywhere onboard.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The Princess Theater is the main venue on Caribbean Princess for comedy acts and production shows with a variety of music and selections appealing to a broad mix of ages. Each of the ship's venues has a different offering. Crooners feature music trivia contests and a pianist. Explorer's Lounge hosts events for everything from Wii sports tournaments to art auctions, plus comedy shows and magicians.

The Piazza offers various demonstrations, circus-lite acts and musical performances throughout the day.

Club Fusion is a part game show, part nightclub venue. Skywalker Nightclub, Princess' trademark, hosts the 70s-, the 80s- and the 90s-inspired nights and a few nights with a variety of modern music.

Caribbean Princess Wiki

Princess Cruises Caribbean ship belongs to company's Grand-class liners ( Fincantieri Monfalcone -built), with (same-designed) sisterships Crown  and  Emerald . The ship is slightly bigger than the other (similarly-designed) Grand-Class liners  Star (now Pacific Encounter) ,  Golden (now Pacific Adventure)  and  Grand . The reason for this is the additional cabin deck (Riviera Deck). The vessel also has no sliding roof to cover the swimming pool area as this liner was planned for exclusively Caribbean itineraries.

Ship's christening ceremony was on April 2, 2004, held in  Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida) , from where also started the inaugural cruise (maiden voyage). Ship's godmother was Jill Whelan - US actress, best known for her role of Vicki Stubing in the 80's TV series "The Love Boat". The vessel was the biggest one in the fleet right until June 2013, when Royal Princess  entered into service.

Fun fact: Caribbean Princess is the first cruise vessel to have an open-air theatre/ outdoor movie screen (named "Movies under the Stars").

Ship's European maiden season was based on homeport Southampton England . Then, it was repositioned to  NYC New York  to operate Fall Foliage cruises to New England, then relocated back to Fort Lauderdale for roundtrip Caribbean itineraries. In April 2013, the liner was deployed back to Europe for the British Isles and various Northern European itineraries in Baltic Sea.

In early-September 2018, Caribbean Princess became fleet's first vessel with installed  Carnival Corporation's OceanMedallion technology  (wearable devices allowing passengers access to "virtual concierge" services and amenities, as well as interactive entertainment). The new technology also includes the MedallionNet - Wi-Fi connectivity via access points installed in every stateroom. Passengers on MedallionClass cruise liners experience land-like connection quality allowing streaming of movies, music, videos, video phone calls, real-time sharing on social media platforms.

Panama Canal cruise itineraries 2017

In 2017, Caribbean Princess made her maiden season of  Panama Canal transition cruises  through the new locks. The ship operated on the 10-day itinerary (with partial transits through the new Agua Clara locks) on roundtrips from  Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades, Florida) . The ship's first ever transit was on October 26, 2017. Prices started from USD 1250 pp (double occupancy). This voyage also celebrated Princess Cruises' 50th anniversary of the 1967 crossing (world's first ever on passenger ship).

The fleet mates  Coral  and  Island  continued to transit the canal through the 3 old locks (Pedro Miguel, Miraflores, Gatun). The new locks were officially inaugurated on June 26, 2016. They are the result of a 9-year (USD 5,2 billion) construction project.

USA to Greenland itinerary 2019

A new Greenland cruise roundtrip from USA (NYC New York ) was revealed in January 2018 for the Princess Cruises Caribbean ship.

  • The cruise departure was scheduled for August 19, 2019.
  • The 16-days long itinerary's ports of call were in Greenland (Nanortalik, Nuuk, Qaqortoq) and Canada (Halifax, Sydney, St Johns).
  • Cruise prices started from USD 2,500 pp (double occupancy Inside Cabin rate) plus additional USD 220 in Gov taxes and port fees.

Caribbean Princess refurbishment 2019 review

During drydock 2019 refurbishment (in June, done in Freeport Bahamas ) on the ship was installed fleet's first-ever waterpark - Reef Splash Zone (without waterslides!). Located aft-portside on Deck 17/Sports Deck (beneath the ramp leading to Skywalkers Nightclub on Deck 18), the water park was added as a new section to the original aft swimming pool (Pirate's View). The redesigned area now includes a large-sized Splashpad (outdoor water playground) fitted with splash pool, water cannons, water sprays, showers, interactive whale-like structure (with a "raining" fluke). The surrounding lounging area (designed for families with kids) was updated with new patio furniture (comfortable sectionals, chairs, sunloungers, padded garden couches with tables), new fixtures and finishes. The existing swimming pool, whirlpool hot tub (large outdoor Jacuzzi) and poolside bar (Morgan's Bar) were also renovated.

The newly-added Game Zone hosts family fun competitions and features oversized backyard games (the likes of Jenga, Cornhole, Connect Four). At Morgan's Bar (kids-friendly) parents can enjoy mocktails and cocktails. The surrounding lounge area is furnished with comfortable sectionals. The water-park is protected by wind panels (throughout the area) while its Shade Canopy (aft-starboard) is a sun-protected seating area covered with canvas canopies. The music system and lighting were upgraded (to the steps and swimming pool) and new wall lighting was installed for the evening open-deck parties, activities (including stargazing and educational kids programs) and themed events.

On Deck 16, the Spa complex (forward) was renovated, redesigned and updated with contemporary artworks and signage. On Deck 16 aft, at Camp Discovery Youth Center (kids-only complex for children 3-12 yo), the Outdoor Play Area was upgraded with an interactive water table for current itinerary/destination-themed fun activities.

Caribbean Princess refurbishment 2017 review

During the ship's 2017 drydock refurbishment (March 25 - April 5, done in Freeport Bahamas) resulted in the following deckplan changes:

  • New kids area ("Camp Discovery" / kids and teen center) was added aft on deck 17.
  • Pool deck's MUTS screen ("Movies Under the Stars" / 850-seat outdoor movie theatre) was upgraded.
  • The number of interconnecting cabins (for families) was increased with an additional 87 pairs.
  • (Lido Deck 15) "Horizon Court" was replaced by "World Fresh Marketplace". The ship's new buffet restaurant now has new decor, improved layout and more food options. Breakfast includes 24-hour cereal station, designer pancake station, hot cereal choices (like shrimp & grits and polenta porridge). Lunch includes hand-crafted sandwiches, regionally-inspired soups, a wide selection of meats (sausages, hams, roasted). Dinner includes family comfort foods, PB&J bar ("Peanut Butter and Jelly").  Nighttime buffet offerings include live-action cooking station (stir-fry, customized pasta, salads).
  • (Lido Deck 15) the ship now has 2 casual specialty restaurants formed from the old "Cafe Caribe". Both restaurants are designed for families with kids. The first at-fee restaurant ("Planks BBQ") serves family-style meat planks (ribs, beef, sausages, chicken) plus sides (fries, chili, coleslaw, charred toast, dill pickles).  Dinner here is served and costs USD 12 pp.  Free buffet-style breakfast and lunch here include customizable breakfast bowls, signature soup, fresh-made salads, fork & knife sandwiches. The second at-fee restaurant ("Steamers Seafood" offers steamers with regionally sourced seafood (Black and Blue Mussels, Scallops and Sausage, Classic Clams, Crab-stuffed Flounder).  Dinner is served and costs USD 12 pp.  Free buffet-style breakfast and lunch choices include egg dishes and ramen bowls.
  • Following the 2017 refurbishment, the ship's pool deck (15) offers 4 outdoor dining options. "The Salty Dog Grill" (formerly "Trident Grill") offers “The Ernesto” burger (best at sea), other specialty beef burgers (with handmade patties and buns), also Street Tacos (with grilled chipotle-lime chicken or roasted sweet potato, corn tortillas), fries and classic hot dogs. "Slice Pizzeria" (formerly "Prego Pizzeria") offers Neapolitan-style pizzas, Deep Dish Focaccia (with marinara, meatballs, cheese), California Artisanal Toast, Sliced Stromboli (calzone filled with deli meats and cheese). "Coffee & Cones" (formerly "Scoops Bar") offers gourmet ice cream sandwiches, free ice cream cones, specialty coffees and teas. "THE MIX" (formerly "Blackbeard’s Bar") / poolside drinks bar) was updated and redesigned.
  • The specialty Italian Trattoria restaurant Sabatini’s (formerly "SHARE by Curtis Stone", on Promenade Deck 7) was redesigned, debuting a new menu with antipasti and handmade pasta dishes by celebrity chef Angelo Auriana, Sabatini’s new menu was implemented fleetwide in 2017. Angelo Auriana is an Executive Chef and partner in the Los Angeles' Italian restaurants "The Factory Kitchen" and "Officine BRERA". Chef Auriana's dishes are based on using old-world grains (like buckwheat and durum wheat) giving them the protein strength necessary to keep the house-made pasta's shape. He also uses numerous non-traditional herbs (like mints and marjoram).

All stateroom beds (a total of 3200 units) were replaced with the company's signature "Princess Luxury Beds”.

Carnival's Ocean Medallion technology was installed in September 2018.

New Cruise Line Dining Experiences Make You Forget You’re on a Cruise

The cruise dining experience often takes advantage of the ship being at sea, with vast windows or al fresco seating overlooking the ocean beyond.

A recent trend, though, has seen cruise lines investing in designs meant to transport the diner away from the vessel.

One of the newest ventures is sticking them on a train. Royal Railway—Utopia Station is a featured restaurant coming onboard Royal Caribbean’s Utopia of the Seas when it debuts this summer in Port Canaveral.

Cruisers will climb aboard a simulated train to experience what traveling on a dining car is like, complete with passing different countryside scenes projected on digital screens.

The first sailings will be limited to an adventure themed to the America’s Wild West for a 90-minute trip that mimics the sights, sounds and feel of a moving train car. Other themes in the works are based on the Silk Route trains that traveled through Asia and 30-minute offerings.

US Cruise Giant Shelves 90-Year-Old Australian Cruise Brand

Diners start with predinner drinks on a station platform, and when the train whistle sounds, passengers board the dining car, where a cast of performers plays out an interactive story line involving outlaws attempting a train robbery. Royal Caribbean put on a sample version of the experience at its Miami headquarters on May 23, 2024.

The menu leans into ingredients from New Mexico and California. Hard drinks are themed to the Old West (think pisco sour), as is the soft drink sarsaparilla, served in a flask. Entrees include river trout, braised short ribs and quail-esque roasted poussin. Appetizers include corn chowder, an empanada trio and “Fart & Dart Baked Beans.”

A little juvenile humor does make its way into the performance, as do some dad jokes and over-the-kids-heads jokes.

“It’s like a caricature. It’s good old-fashioned fun,” said Royal Caribbean President Michael Bayley, but he said the performances and approach may depend on when cruisers are seated.

“In the afternoon into the early evening, it will be more kid-immersive. As you move later on into the evening, it will be more sophisticated,” he said.

The main draws to the experience are the continuous digital screen projections that include frontier towns and desert and mountain landscapes that could be right out of an Albert Bierstadt painting.

The final product resolution will be in 4K, but even the test run’s digital renderings were impressive, minus a few hiccups like a horse floating over the cliff.

Royal Caribbean’s chief product innovation officer Jay Schneider said relying on computer-generated video proved to be the better choice over real landscape videos, although teams did visit actual railways in the West for inspiration.

“Now we can flip a switch and make this winter and make this nighttime,” he said. “That definitely kind of unlocked a lot of possibilities.”

There’s also the $200, three-hour-plus dining experience at the 38-seat venue Empire Supper Club that debuted on the world’s largest cruise ship, Icon of the Seas, which began sailing from Miami in January.

It transports diners to the roaring ’20s of New York City amid an eight-course meal with each course paired with a unique cocktail.

Diners enjoy music from the American Standards Trio with a vocalist, piano and stand-up bass.

Details such as the rotary phones in the lobby and the uniformed waiters and hostess wearing a sultry dinner gown add to the ambience. The menu delves into some not-so-common options such as oysters Rockefeller and a leg and loin duo of rabbit. More traditional fare is offered, too, including steak, sea bass and Caesar salad.

The cocktail pairing approach means no wine, and that’s OK for the venue, said Linken D’Souza, vice president of food and beverage for Royal Caribbean International.

“We went through many iterations of the cocktails to make sure that they’re well balanced. … They paired exceptionally well with the food,” he said. “So that’s not E for everyone. And that’s OK. It’s just a unique niche experience that we want people to really be adventurous.”

Royal isn’t the first to venture down the thematic dining road, which has in some ways been dabbled with over the years, including dinner theater in-the-round venues on some Norwegian Cruise Line ships such as the short-lived magic-themed Illusionarium on Norwegian Getaway and the celebration of 1980s teen films from John Hughes on Norwegian Escape.

And Disney Cruise Line’s rotational dining has always served up a variety of thematic overlays. Its newest ships, though, have taken it to the next level.

That includes the Worlds of Marvel dining venue on both its latest ship, Disney Wish, and its upcoming Disney Treasure, debuting this December, both sailing out of Port Canaveral. Disney Wish also debuted Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure, a vast food hall that expanded on similar approaches to dining themed to “Tangled” and “The Princess & the Frog” on older ships Disney Magic and Wonder.

For Disney Treasure, the line is shelving “Frozen” in favor of the Disney-Pixar film “Coco.” The new overlay will feature a five-course meal with a modern take on traditional Mexican fare.

It will feature live performers telling the story of Miguel and his familia being offered up with different-themed seatings per voyage, as it’s tied to a seven-night sailing. The first night takes diners to Mariachi Plaza with Miguel’s parents Enrique and Luisa as well as Abuelita Elena. The second night takes diners to the town square in Santa Cecilia, where Miguel and his ancestors including great-great-grandparents Hector and Mama Imelda celebrate Día de los Muertos.

“The adventure takes you through (those) heartstrings, and pulls you back into family, right?” said Carlos Jimenez, a managing producer with Disney Cruise Line Entertainment. “Doesn’t matter if you’re coming from the Mexican culture or any other culture. Family’s at the center—la familia es todo. So family is everything, and we want to make sure we’re telling that beautiful story.”

Princess Cruises also debuted a suite-level guest offering called “360: An Extraordinary Experience” onboard the Enchanted Princess and Discovery Princess.

The line carved out a small rotunda venue with two long half-circle tables facing one another for 20 guests to dine on a seven-course meal that hits all the senses over an hour and a half.

Diners begin seated within a dark room surrounded by digital screen snapshots of Mediterranean destinations about the circular enclosed walls. What follows is a story telling of a culinary adventure from Greece to Italy to Spain and into France, with an assist from actress Brooke Shields.

It’s a narrative device to get the real stories told, the source of the various culinary delights presented with white-glove service from course to course, whether it’s the Spanish divers who take the red varietal Grenache and age it underwater or the French lavender farmer who explains where the distinct honey flavor comes from.

Along the way, an intense and detailed projection around the room and onto the dinner service plates invites diners to interact with their meal settings before the actual food is presented, such as virtually smashing some Greek plateware or digging up a Spanish truffle.

The scents of the food while dining could suffice, but an effusive olfactory accompaniment hits here and there, such as the lemon aroma ahead of the tasty Italian dish pasta al limone.

“What happens here in 360 is you can be anywhere in the world, and we’re going to transport you into the Mediterranean,” said Princess Cruises President John Padgett during the experience’s debut event. “We have immersive video, storytelling, food and wine that intersects with the story.”
