A Konkan Road Trip Itinerary | Mumbai to Goa

Here’s a fun Konkan road trip itinerary from Mumbai to Goa with beach stops along the way…

Because why do something as mundane as flying to Goa, when you can frolic on endless beach sand, breathe in the heavy salt air, and eat freshly cooked spicy Konkan food en voyage? Here’s a majorly fun and scenic road trip itinerary starting from Mumbai and ending in Goa with beach stops along the way. The itinerary assumes stops on the onward journey, but you can mix it up and do a few on the return journey as well. Prepare to be well and truly tanned (I took this in April!) and happily exhausted.

The summary itinerary

What you will do on the road trip from Mumbai to Goa and the beaches you will stop at.

The Konkan Road Trip Itinerary looks something like this: Mumbai –> 5 hours to Harihareshwar –> 5 hours to Velneshwar –> 1 hour 30 min via ferry to Ganapatiphule –> 4 hours 30 min to Tarkali –> 4 hours to Goa (South). Total driving time of 20-22 hours on one side and this is on the higher side because of the scenic beach route you’ll take (more on that below). You can return via NH4 or the Bangalore-Pune highway which takes about 12 hours non-stop from Goa to Mumbai. Note: All timings are roundabout, and Google Maps is your best friend.

Two routes show up when you plot the way from Mumbai to Goa on Google Maps. The best and the usually taken route is along the Mumbai-Bangalore National Highway 4 (NH4), which crosses Pune, and takes 11-12 hours (for a non-stop trip). The other is via NH66 which goes through Chiplun, Kolad, Mahad and Malvan. This one takes 12-13 hours (for a non-stop trip). The longest and the most scenic route is MSH4, also called the Sagari Mahamarg , which is either a drive next to or close to the sea. In most cases, the sea will be a few hundred feet away, and beaches will keep popping up. The beauty of this route is the two-lane road with sparse traffic running through the Western Ghats and flanked by forests and beaches. The winding roads ascend and descend at will, and during monsoons, the swaying palms, the lush surroundings, the patter of rain, and the gurgling sea make splendid accompaniment. This route takes 14-15 hours (for a non-stop trip) and 20-22 hours for the route suggested in this post. The Sagari Mahamarg route will not show up on Google Maps unless you put one location to the next and change as you drive along.

Where to stay

All my recommended Maharashtra stays, as part of this itinerary, are at MTDC. I am a big fan of MTDC. Modest, no-nonsense and no-frills service, I find it a total value for money. You know exactly what to expect. One Medimix soap, one Vatika/ Sunsilk shampoo sachet, a plastic jar of filter water, beige blankets and white sheets, a flat-screen TV with less than 10 channels, no electric kettle or coffee or tea sachets, no (or poor) Wi-Fi, basic local food which, if you’re fortunate, will be delicious. And always, always the best locations and properties that span acres. Check-in is at 10:30 am and checkouts at 9 am. Book MTDC properties at their website . I’m no affiliate. Just a fan.

In Goa, you’d be spoilt for choice. There are beautiful and inexpensive mid-tier hotels and also some very fancy five-stars. Some of my favourite beaches and inexpensive properties are:

Majestic Comforts in Varca-Benaulim: Cosy beach huts, a few minutes’ walk from the sea, Majestic Comforts is reminiscent of properties in Bali. The private sundecks right in front of the fairly un-visited beach are the clincher. This property has the kind of frills I need.

Cavala in Baga: Located in the busy north, Cavala is quaint, classy, and the right kind of pretentious. Weekends are great fun with live music and dancing. It is a 1o minute walk to the busy and popular Baga beach.

Mariposa Beach Grove in Agonda offers fairly inexpensive sea-facing villas and you couldn’t get closer to the sea than this. The resort is located in Agonda, a sandy beach that serves as a nesting ground for olive ridley sea turtles in September.

Stop at Harihareshwar

We used the NH66 to get here from Mumbai, but you could plot from Mumbai to Harihareshwar on Google Maps and drive via Alibaug and Murud, with ferries (check Dighi/ Agardanda jetty) thrown in-between. This increases travel time by an hour or so but is an adventure unto itself.

Harihareshwar is a town in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, surrounded by three hills, and with a pristine beachfront. Towards the north of the town is the temple of Lord Harihareshwar, said to have been blessed by Lord Shiva. Thus, Harihareshwar is also called Dev-Ghar or the ‘house of God’. It has two primary beaches − one, in front of Harihareshwar Temple, and the other, about 2 km long, in front of the MTDC Resort.

Stop at Velneshwar

Velnenshwar is a village on the Western Coast of Maharashtra, about 70 km from Ratnagiri, and 20 km from Guhagar. A Shiva temple is its essential claim to fame but it is also home to pristine beaches. Stay at MTDC Velneshwar, an expansive property with great views and a 10 minute downhill walk to the beach. Since not many people visit Velneshwar, opting instead to go to Ganapatiphule, and so, you might have the resort and beach all to yourself.

Velneshwar to Ganapatipule takes about 2 hours but you can shorten the time slightly and add a nice little cruise along the way, by taking your car aboard a ferry using the Jaigad Tawsal ferry service. The route is here . Ferries ply every hour or so. Cost is as per vehicle size and about INR 150 for a 4-wheeler.

After reaching the other shore and before heading to Ganapatipule, swing by Jaigad fort . Entry is free. The fort-ruins offer a sea-walk along the fort’s walls end-to-end. Nestled on a cliff, the impressive edifice overlooks a bay formed as the Shastri river enters the Arabian Sea. It was built by the Sultan of Bijapur in the 16th century.

Stop at Ganapatipule

The Ganapatipule beach is among the cleaner commercial beaches I’ve seen along the Maharashtra coastline. Located in the Ratnagiri district, the town of about a few thousand residents is also famous for a 400-year old Ganesh temple.

The MTDC property on the Ganapatipule beach is a HUGE. The bamboo huts facing the sea and the VIP suites have the best view. Each hut is equipped with a clothing line where you can wash and dry your clothes—which may seem like an excess—but not so next to the sea. We found only the food and Wi-Fi services wanting. An MTDC boat club is in the works; that promises to be fun. Apart from that, local clubs organize events such as parasailing, banana boats, and Jet Ski. Partake at your own risk. The beach is considered dangerous during many months of the year, so caution is advised.

Part of the Ganapatipule bunch of beaches, the nearby Arey Ware Beach is well worth a quick stop. It is a beautiful stretch of white sand shore and sparkling aquamarine water. Grab a coconut from one of the stalls at the entrance (or hide a beer can in your pocket), walk inside through a lush cluster of coconut groves to enjoy some quiet time off from the tourist bustle.

Stop at Tarkarli

Located roughly 4 hours from Goa, Tarkarli is hard to reach from Mumbai and easily bypassed (you might as well go to Goa) but it is a beach destination well worth a visit. Tarkarli is located in the Malvan taluka of Sindhudurg district, with about 2000 local residents and a handful of average hotels. MTDC runs three properties in the region and the scuba courses run by MTDC’s IISDA (Indian Institute of Scuba Diving and Aquatic Sports) are highly rated and very popular. I couldn’t do it because I hadn’t booked it in advance, but I’ll definitely try this in a few months.

Very close to Tarkali, about 30 min away, is the impressive Sindhudurg fort . Built by Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century, this is another fort that offers awesome sea views.

Stop at Goa

What can I say about Goa? I’m so in love with it that I wrote a whole book on it! For a frequent traveller to Goa, the rite of passage is to start from the beaches in the North (Arpora, Baga, Calangute, Candolim, and Anjuna) which are more populous and eventful, and then move to the lower visited, less ‘happening’ but more pristine southern Goa beaches (Palolem, Varca, Cavelossim, Benaulim, Colva, Agonda). (For now) the beaches of South Goa are cleaner and peaceful, with the sea being the only object of glory and distraction, as it should be.

Rent a bike and roam about on the quaint streets of Goa. Goa used to be a Portuguese colony until 1961 and a mixed culture is evident in the gorgeous houses and food. Popular places to visit are Fort Aguada, the Basilica of Bom Jesus, Mario Gallery, Nights Markets, and some gorgeous churches and awesome restaurants. On the beaches, especially in the north, you can partake in activities and water sports such as Jet Ski, snorkelling, banana boating, kayaking, scuba diving, parasailing etc. Select beaches also have surfing and kneeboarding. Most tourists ignore Panjim, the capital, but it is an interesting walk down Fountainhas , also known as Goa’s equivalent of the Latin Quarters.

I am not sure what you are referring to when you ask about the trip being dangerous. The roads are quite good and safe overall. Day 1: Mumbai to Goa (591 Kms)

Leave from mumbai early in the around 6 AM so that you can reach Goa at aroung 6 PM. First day is going to be about reaching goa and resting. On the way to goa, we’ll be exploring a few places lying on the route.
First break for the day is going to be Arctic Seasonal Waterfalls on Mumbai – Pune Highway located just 72 Kms ahead of Mumbai.
35 Kms ahead of Arctic Seasonal Waterfalls, you’ll arrive at Malavlli Hills where you can take a break for 10 minutes and enjoy the view.
Our last stop on this Mumbai to Goa route will be Pashan Lake in Pune. Pashan Lake is about 50 Kms ahead of Malavli Hills. Take a 20 minutes break here and continue your ride towards Goa.

Best time for Mumbai to Goa road trip:

If you want to avoid peak tourist season, don't plan a trip to Goa in the months of December to mid February. There are lots of things to do in Goa all year round, but tourist crowds are lesser during mid February onwards to June and September to November. Rains bring with them a certain charm and wilderness and if you want to beat the rush, the monsoon months will also be perfect. However, rains also bring with them slippery roads and mucky bylanes.

Route 1 - Mumbai to Goa via NH-4

About this route:

Considered to be a safe route, especially when travelling with family and kids, the NH4 highway is a 4 lane one with proper road dividers. Having fewer ghats, the road does however have a lot of toll booths. Be prepared to spend more.

What to see on the way:

How can you pass by Lonavala without stopping to stock up on loads of its famous chikki ?! If you have some time to spare, do check out a stunning sunrise at the Tiger’s point. Completely worth the uphill ride.

If you leave Mumbai early in the morning, the city of Pune would be a good place to halt for a scrumptious breakfast. If you are interested in some local sightseeing, we recommend you visit Shaniwar Wada, Pataleshwar Cave Temple and the magnificent Sinhagad Fort.

A treat for non vegetarians, a stopover at Kolhapur for lunch would be ideal. Famous for its tambda rassa - pandhara rassa , points of interest within Kolhapur include Mahalakshmi Temple, Rankala Lake and the historical Panhala Fort.

Crossing state borders, Belgaum is a charming city in Karnataka. You may consider this city for a night cap. If you wish to explore this city, we recommend you visit the famous Belgaum fort and, if you are a nature lover, the nearby located beautiful Bhimgad wildlife sanctuary.

Route 2 - Mumbai to Goa via NH-17 (now NH 66)

Distance: 590 kilometres

NH 66, best route for Mumbai to Goa by Car

While you will definitely be saving money due to less number of toll booths, this route is full of winding roads and deadly curves. One for the thrill lovers, this route is more scenic and offers stunning views of the mountains and coastal areas.

Leaving back the hustle bustle of Mumbai, you can halt for breakfast at Panvel. If you are a bird watching enthusiast, you have to visit the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. And if you love trekking, the grand Karnala fort awaits you.

Located around 220 kilometres from Panvel, you can stop in the quaint town of Chiplun for some appetizing lunch. If you want to explore more of this town located on the banks of the River Vashishti, we recommend Parshuram Temple, Walavalkar Shivaji Museum, Sawatsada Waterfalls and the ruins of fort Gowalkot.

Sawantwadi:

Famous for its wooden toys, Sawantwadi would be your last stop in the state of Maharashtra before you cross the state border and enter your dream destination of Goa. The town of Sawantwadi is also known for its delicate lacquer ware. If shopping is on your mind, this is the place to halt!

To summarize, Route 1 is shorter and the roads are better and safer. Route 2 is comparatively more scenic but a bit longer than Route 1 . It is also the one for people who are adventurous.

Mumbai to Goa: what to expect on your roadtrip right now

For a family that loves to travel, and enjoys long summer breaks, staying cooped in was getting difficult. We were getting onto each others' nerves. We developed a love-hate relationship with our kids—depending on the time of day we were at—and that's when we decided that they needed a break and so did we. After four months and 27 days of lockdown, of waiting for the world to open, we finally decided to be brave and venture out of our suburb in Mumbai. We were looking for a place from where we could work for a month. The criteria: easy to get to, where the pandemic is largely in control, and a place not too crowded. After all the evaluation and plodded by our happy memories from previous trips, we settled on Goa.

The planning

We started looking for a place. We planned to stay for a long time, so the place and accommodation had to be right. Villa identified, we moved on to secure the e-pass for the travel. We applied online, three days before travel and within 24 hours, our balloon of excitement burst. Our application had been rejected.

We never anticipated that, so we moved our plans by two weeks and went back with a better checklist.

Apply for an e-pass: We applied online again through the Maharashtra Police website . You need to upload ID details of everyone travelling, the details of the car, the reason for travel and a doctor's certificate stating that the travellers are in good health. The second time, we applied on the 2 August for travel on the 15 August. This time, we received an approved e-pass within 24 hours.

Book villa: We chose to stay around Assagao. We wanted good Wi-Fi, a pool, and an area for our son to run around. But the biggest criteria was the need for limited interaction with people. We found this beautiful self-contained villa from Lohono Stays.

COVID tests: Two options available. Get tested for COVID, carry a report no more than 48hrs old or reach Goa and self-quarantine for 14 days (or till you get tested and have an all-clear report). We all chose to get tested for COVID before we left. We booked with Suburban Diagnostics —they have a drive-through setup at Hotel Executive Enclave at Bandra West. We went at our allotted time, we had a 20min wait. When it was our turn—they asked for our names and in two minutes, a person in a full PPE kit arrived with our paperwork and labelled bottles and did a swab test one us one by one. We ended up gagging and sneezing because the guy taking the test poked the stick. But the saving grace, it took a minute each and we didn't step out of the car. They didn't give us a receipt, but sent an email on the registered ID. The next day, we were told the reports would be shared on Saturday—that got us worried as our e-pass was for Saturday. We called on the listed number and the lady reassured us that the report would be shared with us within 36 hours. We received the report via email within 24 hours.

Prep the car: Check the air pressure, fuel up. We drove down in a Honda CRV. It was pouring and water had filled up at a few places so a car with a higher clearance is advisable for this journey.

Mumbai to Goa: The journey

The time had come, our bags were packed. Excitement in the air, my 7-year-old son, Angad was carrying his bag full of toys and my 12-year-old, Ahaana, with her playlists, ready for 10 hours. And our cook didi, ready with her three picnic baskets of food. We didn't want to stop on the way at any restaurant so we overcompensated on the food. Three baskets filled with sandwiches, idlis, parathas and theplas, one cooler bag with cold drinks and coffee and flasks with chai. I'm a Sikh and we are used to starting every journey with a "Bole Sohnehaal-sat sri akal" ('Blessed is the person who says... True is the Great Timeless One). With God's blessings, we loaded up and left at 5.45am and within 10mins of us leaving, it started to rain cats and dogs!

Traffic and roads

There was very limited traffic so we didn't have any delays. The ghats were filled with trucks but there were very few vehicles beyond the trucks so we had a quick drive. And barring some patches of broken roads in Mumbai that we had to avoid, once outside of the city, the majority of the roads were great, and we enjoyed the drive. We took the Pune-Bengaluru Highway (NH-48). At one point, Google recommended a detour, off the highway. It looked like a small turn off but we put our faith in the map and went with the suggested shorter route. It was the most scenic, stunning journey for us through Aajra, Aamboli, Sawantwadi. It isn't a four-lane highway, not even a clear two lanes at some places. But absolutely green, with zero bumps in the road—a beautiful drive. Totally recommended. At the end of this three-hour drive, for about 20mins, the road was totally broken and bumpy.

Zero visibility in patches

There were petrol pumps across the journey and 80% of them were open. But the same wasn't the case with restaurants, hotels or food courts—nothing was open when we left the city and on the way too, very few were open. We have had an extremely bad experience with the loos at the food courts: wet, extremely bad hygiene, smell that would make you retch. So we chose to stop at an HPCL petrol pump which was slightly bigger and had restrooms. The staff was all wearing masks and were very courteous and welcoming. The loos were small but clean. We refuelled and used the loos at this point. Post refueling we just stayed parked in the same compound and stretched our legs and had tea and coffee that we had carried. We just took this one 25min stop and ate on the way, in the car. The e-pass validity was till 7pm and we wanted to be sure that we had the buffer of an hour or two, in case of any issue we might face.

We were stopped four times in Maharashtra to check for the e-pass. The first time, it was raining so we just put up the e-pass on the window and the person checking was kind enough to read on that and wave us through. They were checking the cars—waving through the ones with the valid passes and sending the others to a queue to fill some paperwork. At every checkpoint, there were 10-12 cars that had pulled over to fill up these forms. All the personnel checking were aware of the e-pass system and the paperwork and were quick to check. At each point, we spent approximately 2-3 mins.

At Amboli, there was a makeshift checkpost, where the policeman asked us to get down and show our papers. When we went there, the people saw our e-pass and sent us back saying that people with a pass didn't need to report or fill any form. I must commend the government authorities on the system—everyone was following protocol, ensuring speed and ease for the travellers.

In addition to the checks, we crossed six toll booths. Each time there were barely 2-3 vehicles ahead. We had loaded up our FASTag so we could drive through the first two with no stopping. For the last two tolls, the FASTag didn't work and we had to pay cash. (Listing out the amounts, in case you need to pay cash and don't want to take currency back from the booth: Rs35, Rs95, Rs65, Rs150, Rs75, RS75. The last one is at the Maharashtra-Karnataka border.

The last checkpoint was for the entry to Goa, to check for COVID. This was a chaotic and the least organised part of the checks. They had two counters manned by 12-15 people, each with multiple passengers. Not everyone was wearing a mask or rather, had them pulled down under the nose. There were no separate queues for people who had taken the COVID test versus those who were volunteering to self-quarantine. The team behind the counter wasn't aware of the differences. We had print-outs of the COVID test results, so once our turn came, they saw papers, asked us if we had anything else to submit, kept all printouts and let us pass. Those who didn't have test results were being asked to fill a form and get a stamp on the hands. This stop was our longest stop, which took us 35 minutes. But it was also our last stop.

From the last checkpoint, we had another 40mins to our villa in Assagao. While suddenly, there were many two-wheelers on the road, the traffic was still mellow. With all the pitstops and the checks, we went from door to door in 10 hours and 10 mins.

Goa, finally

At this point, Goa is completely lush and green and with no tourists around, it has been a great place to go out for walks and on the beach. There is barely anyone around, and even the ones who are venturing out are maintaining distance. In our area, supermarkets are open, select restaurants are open and delivering, although delivery does stop earlier than usual. There is something in the air that makes me want to slow down, be lazy, stop and smell the roses, sit by the waves and watch the sun set, have a drink, relish a platter of shrimp... The list is endless, but we have a month.

MUMBAI GOA ROAD TRIP – THE COASTAL ROUTE

Road trips are fun to explore new places. India encompasses numerous spots across different parts throughout the country. So, it doesn’t matter which part of the country one lives in, there is always an option of planning a road trip in India.

We did a 10 days motorcycle road trip from Mumbai-Goa-Mumbai via the Coastal Route traversing through scenic seaside villages with endless stretches overlooking the sea. Ride on the sea with your vehicle loaded on a ferry and feel the sea breeze showering you with salted kisses. The coastal route is worth an experience.

This route is less explored as it takes much more time than the other two popular routes of Mumbai Goa Highway (NH66) and Mumbai-Pune-Bangalore Highway (NH4). If you are a traveller and like to roam the roads just like us, this route is for you.

In this article, we will guide you through the coastal route and share our experiences which can help you plan this beautiful road trip.

DAY 1 – MUMBAI TO HARIHARESHWAR

Route – Mumbai~Kashid~Murud Janjira~Agardanda~Dighi~Harihareshwar (222 kms)

Ferry Point – Agardanda to Dighi Port. (From 8 am every one hour till 9:30 pm)

Our stay on day 1 was at Harihareshwar. You can also plan to finish your day at Shrivardhan which is around 20 kms before Harihareshwar.

Once you hit NH66, just before Karnala there are many breakfast options. We ate at Joshi Wadewale serving authentic Maharashtrian breakfast. Puneri misal is a must try.

Move ahead to Alibaug via Vadkhal junction on NH66. The coastal route begins from here. Skip the halt at Alibag as it can be easily explored any other day from Mumbai. Around 30 kms from Alibag and on the way towards Murud Janjira is Kashid Beach . There are lots of shacks with hammocks offering snacks, cold drinks, and coconut water. You can relax here for some time.

If you are looking for a more secluded beach, then skip Kashid and ride 15 minutes further to Nandgaon Beach . A peaceful and silent place with clean water. Good place to relax in shade of the coconut trees. There are not many eateries here.

We took our first ferry at 1:15pm from Agardanda jetty. It drops at Dighi Port situated on the bank of Rajpuri creek in 15 minutes. From here, Harihareshwar is 48 kms. Road from Dighi is under construction but still a manageable ride.

Sadguru Krupa Khanaval (7350380167) on Dighi road serves homemade meals at a reasonable price. We tried veg & non veg thali. Food was simple and tasty.

Harihareshwar Beach is a stretch of calm and serene waters with unpolluted cool breeze wafting along the sea-shore. After a long ride, this is a perfect place to spend the evening. Visit the 16th century historic Harihareshwar Temple located on the coast. It offers a great combination of natural beauty with spiritual enhancement.

DAY 2 – HARIHARESHWAR to GANPATIPULE

Route – Harihareshwar~Bagmandla~Vesvi~Harnai~Ladghar~Dabhol~Dhopave~Guhagar~Tavsal~ Jaigad~Ganpatipule (164 kms)

Ferry Point-

Bagmandla to Vesvi (From 7:30 am every 1 hour)
Dabhol to Dhopave (From 6:45 am every 45 min)
Tavsal to Jaigad (From 6:40 am every 1 hour)

Day 2 is all about ferry crossing. There are 3 ferries to cross. We took the first ferry at 10:30 am. We were late as we spent the morning doing photography at Harihareshwar.

After a 30 minutes ride, you reach Bagmandla Jetty . The ferry crosses the river Savitri and drops you to another side called Vesvi in 5-10 minutes. It saves you almost 30-40 kms of ride.

Once you reach Vesvi, you need to head towards Dabhol Jetty via Kelshi~Harnai~Murud~route. This is a wonderful stretch of internal village roads. There are many places where you would like to stop and take your time to admire the views and take photographs. Of course you should, as you are roaming the roads to enjoy the journey, aren’t you?

We took our 2nd ferry from Dabhol at 3:45 pm which dropped us at Dhopave in 10 minutes. From here, your next destination is Tavsal Jetty which is 50 kms away. And then, 22 kilometers more and you reach Ganpatipule.

We would like to share a small experience here. It was already 4:30 pm when we left for Tavsal. Our concern was whether we would be able to catch the 6:40 pm ferry. Missing this means waiting for another one hour. The roads were pretty good but narrow with a lot of hairpin turns and for miles we were the only souls to be seen. You can imagine the thrill of riding alone.

It was just when we were soaked in our aloneness, climbing the ghats we came across two young cyclists who were slowly pedaling their way up. I slowed down the bike and initiated a quick conversation. Cycling all the way from Mumbai they were also going to Goa. This was their first bicycle trip. They too were heading towards the jetty. I informed them about the ferry timings. Cheering them up I accelerated. We wish we could stop and listen to their on road experiences, but we did not want to miss the ferry.

We reached the jetty 15 minutes before time. There were not many passengers. We were waiting for the ferryman to allow us in. And when he did, I got up to start my motorcycle and unexpectedly the cyclists turned up just before the ferry was about to leave. And there we were, stretching ourselves and one of them sharing their experiences as the ferry started moving with the wind gently kissing our faces. Their story reflected courage and determination. It was a good feeling to meet these inspiring souls.

After a 20 minutes of ferry ride, we reached Jaigad Jetty. Knowing we wouldn’t meet again, bidding them goodbye we parted our ways.

We reached Ganpatipule at 8:30 pm.

DAY 3 – GANPATIPULE to TARKARLI

Route – Ganpatipule~AareWare~Pawas~Devgad~Tarkarli (181 kms)

No more ferry crossing. Right till you reach Malvan, ride on this beautiful stretch with wonderful views of lush greens, clear, sparkling waters of pristine white beaches, and ancient colorful temples each of which has a unique story to tell.

Before you begin the ride, visit the 400 year old famous Ganpatipule Temple situated on the beach. Around 1 km from the temple is Prachin Konkan Museum . This is an open air museum featuring sculptures depicting traditional konkan life and culture. A trip to Ganpatipule without visiting this is incomplete.

After a 30 minutes of ride, you will reach a combination of two beaches Aare & Ware which are located next to each other. The stretch is so breathtaking. Definitely a must halt. There is a certain freedom in finding a small piece of the world that belongs only to you, if only for a short time.

There are many places on this route where you would like to stop. Visit some villages on the route. Talk to the locals, fishermen. The people of Konkan are very helpful and humble.

Other places to explore enroute – Devgad & Kunkeshwar

We reached Malvan at 7:00 pm. Our stay was at Ghar Malvankarache (8600381490) – a homestay run by a humble family. They have budget friendly rooms which are clean and comfortable. But above all the food is just awesome. I tried Prawns Masala with Malvani Vade. It was simply delicious. Next day morning for breakfast, Archana aunty served us Ghavane with Cocunut chutney. Whenever I visit Malvan again, I am definitely going to eat here.

DAY 4 – EXPLORE MALVAN

A day is not enough to explore Malvan. Malvan is a kind of place that makes you want to stay on forever if possible – with the waves and the sands, the trees and the stars. But even if you are here for a day or two, you will take back something- if nothing else a snapshot of a unique seashell on a mesmerizing beach.

Take a leisurely walk through the villages, when sunlight filters in through the palms. You will pass women sorting dried fish outside their homes. Give them a smile and you will surely receive it back. This little Konkan town has a bustling jetty with a tangle of boats and roof tiled homes where the scent of wood smoke and aromas of fish curry drift into your memories.

Places you shouldn’t miss to see – Tarkarli Beach , Chiwla Beach , Deobagh Village & Sindhudurg Fort

If you love watersports, then indulge yourself in Scuba Diving , Dolphin Safari and other water activities held here.

DAY 5 – TARKARLI to GOA

Route – Tarkarli~Vengurla~Shiroda~Goa (109 kms)

It was time to go GOA. We were excited.

As we were riding towards Vengurla past peeping palm trees, towards a turn I heard a voice which seemed familiar to me. I turned to see and it was just what we hadn’t expected. There they were: the two cyclists. We were happy to meet them once again.

We used different modes of transport while roaming the roads but we could connect with each other the joy of enjoying the road trips. Road trips are full of surprises, isn’t it? Who knows, we could even meet in Goa.

Keep riding 50 kms till you reach Vengurla. Leisurely ride past the village in the shadow of the verdant plantations of cashewnuts, mango and coconut trees.

Around 3 km from the Vengurla market, Sagareshwar Beach is hidden away behind rows of tall casuarinas swaying in the wind. A small temple of Sagareshwara (Lord of the Sea) is located on the beach.

Located at the end of a winding hilly road and about a 45 minute ride from Sagareshwar is Shiroda Beach. A less explored and virgin region of the Konkan, Shiroda beach is carpeted with silvery white sands, cool blue waters and gentle sea breeze.

Other places to explore enroute – Nivati Beach , Redi Beach & Sawantwadi

We reached Goa at 4 pm. Our stay was in Anjuna, North Goa. Having checked in our guest house and freshening up, we spent the evening at Vagator Beach. If you are a party going person; then this is definitely the place for you with rave parties going till the wee hours of night. We somehow managed to find our small corner of happiness on this crowded beach

DAY 6, 7 & 8 – GOA, GOA & ONLY GOA

Hurray!! Finally in Goa. Yes, the much awaited destination. You have to plan these 3 days well depending on where you wish to stay between North & South Goa. These will again depend on your travel taste and what you want to experience in Goa. For peace and solitude, and offbeat experiences, head to South Goa.

We will share in short how we spent our 3 days in Goa –

Day 1 – We explored places which were near our guest house from Anjuna. Overall distance covered 40 kms exploring Baga beach, Sinquerim Fort, Reis Magos Fort, Fontainhas & Chapora. You must try Fruit Salad with Ice Cream at Scarlet Juice Centre, Chapora.

Day 2 – This day we rode 85 kms to South Goa to experience kayaking in the backwaters of Cola Beach . Cola beach is one of those offbeat destinations, where the beautiful blue lagoon meets the unstoppable wave of the Arabian sea.

You can rent a kayak for 30 minutes to surf through the backwater at Rs 150 only.

On your way back to North Goa, if you are able to reach before dusk take the route through Parra Road . Lined with palm trees and fields on both sides, end your day watching the magical sunset.

Day 3 – An impulsive decision and we were riding towards Ribandar Jetty from where a ferry (free of cost) would take us to Chorao Island . Having done with beaches we wanted to explore something different. It seemed we had escaped into a sleepily quaint, laid-back and picturesque village from a different era with its Portuguese-styled manors and churches. It is also home to the offbeat Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary .

Once done with the island, we headed straight towards Morjim Beach to have lunch at Smoke Fish Cafe (8975557019) The restaurant is run by a family on the terrace serving authentic Goan homemade cuisine. One of the best foods we had in Goa.

We ended our last day shopping at Anjuna Flea Market and then taking a quiet walk on Anjuna Beach retrospecting on our journey from day one. This road trip had been one of the best things in life we had experienced.

Two more days on the road still…. The journey was not over yet.

DAY 9 – GOA to MURUD (DAPOLI)

Route – Goa~Kankavli~Chiplun~Khed~Dapoli~Murud (392 kms)

This was a long ride for us. Almost did 400 kms. We took NH66, the four lane Mumbai-Goa highway till Khed and then took a diversion towards Dapoli.

When we had halted at Sangameshwar for lunch, we decided not to stay in any of the hotels on the highway but instead chose to ride a few extra kilometers and stay on the beach. It was as if the sea was calling us back to the coastal route. So I called Aviraj Niwas, a homestay at Murud Beach in Dapoli where I had stayed earlier and immediately booked a room.

The highway is in good condition from Goa to Kankavli and you will enjoy riding on this four lane highway cruising at 60 kmph. After Lanja the road turns into a two lane. And you have to ride carefully as the road widening work is in progress and there are diversions every few meters.

These bumpy roads were tiring for both of us. But as soon as we left the highway and took a diversion to Dapoli we felt relief. We were once again riding on the coastal route. The sky at the sunset formed a perfect backdrop for a ride along the winding road. And in no time the moon slowly climbed up and casted its silvery reflection.

DAY 10 – MURUD (DAPOLI) to MUMBAI

Route – Murud~Dapoli~Mandangad~Tol Phata~Mangaon~Mumbai (250 kms)

Tired, but still we got up early in the morning as we had to go to Murud Beach for Dolphin Safari. We decided on this at dinner last night while talking to our host. He assured us that dolphins are guaranteed to be seen. So we thought of taking a chance. We did see a few of them after a long wait in the middle of the sea. The ferryman was kind enough not to drop us at shore without the sighting of dolphins.

Murud is a small town with a scenic and long stretch of beach dotted with crab holes and swaying palms. It also has many beach resorts situated amidst coconut plantations.

Olive Ridley Sea Turtles have also been spotted here

We explored a new route for our last day on the road. From Dapoli market, we took a left turn towards Mandangad . It took us to Mangaon on NH66 through internal village roads.

Returning home after being 10 days on the road was a bit depressing. I remembered one of John Denver’s compositions, ‘’ Hey, it’s good to be back home again”.

This homecoming was quite different from all the others I’ve had in my life. Coming home conjures up numerous emotions, and we were returning home with pleasant memories.

You can take the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and go via Pune to Satara and then Kolhapur to Belgaum on NH4 and then Belgaum to Goa.

The smoothest driveways is the Mumbai – Pune expressway. This is a convenient route between Mumbai to Goa. The smooth roads and multiple lanes make driving very relaxing.

You can start off early and reach Panvel from Mumbai. Once you reach Panvel via NH 17 this road is called NH 66. You can take a leisurely drive on this 2 lane highway. Enjoy the vivid green surroundings and also you can stop by one of the roadside eateries.

1. karnala bird sanctuary.

On this route you can visit the Karnala Bird sanctuary in Panvel. Home to around 150 species of birds this attracts tourists on the Mumbai to Goa trips.

10 Best Spots You Will Find On A Road Trip From Mumbai To Goa

1. Panvel: Karnala Fort And Karnala Bird Sanctuary

Around 52 minutes away from Mumbai, lies Panvel which is famous for the ancient Karnala Fort and Karlana Bird Sanctuary . The splendid hill fort, Karnala Fort, lies within the Karlana Bird Sanctuary, which is home to more than 200 species of birds.

2. Kolad: Tamhini Ghat Waterfalls, Kansai Waterfalls And Ghoshala Fort

If you’re a river rafting enthusiast, Kolad is the place for you. Nestled on the banks of river Kundalika, Kolad is a pretty hamlet that will lure the eye of every nature lover. Around 1.5 hours away from Kolhad, lies Tamhini Ghat, renowned for the Tamhini Ghat waterfalls, Kansai waterfalls and beautiful hot springs.

The 16th-century Ghoshala Fort, around 100 kilometres away from Kolad is best known for its caves, water cisterns and breathtaking architecture. Other noteworthy places around this place are Sutarwadi Lake, Tala Fort and Kuda Mandid Caves.

3. Dapoli: Panhalakaji Caves, Harnai Port And Kadyavarcha Ganapati Temple

The small city in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, Dapoli is nearly two and a half hours away from Kolad. One can explore the Panhalakaji Caves, Unhavare hot springs, Harnai Port, Karde Beach, Murud Beach and Kadyavarcha Ganapati Temple at this place.

Dapoli had been the backdrop of Shri Narayan Pendse’s famous Marathi novel Garambicha Bappu. Also, Murud is an ideal place for dolphin-spotting.

4. Chiplun: Gowalkot Fort, Sawatsada Waterfalls, Guhagar Beach And Lord Parashurama Temple

The word Chiplun stands for ‘the abode of Lord Parashurama’. This town in Maharashtra’s Konkon region is known for spots like Gowalkot Fort, Sawatsada Waterfalls, Vashishthi River, Guhagar Beach, Koyna Dam, Pandava caves and Lord Parashurama Temple.

It takes around 12 hours to explore Chiplun in totality, so you might plan to halt here for a day.

5. Sawantwadi: Sawantwadi Palace, Moti Talao Lake

The historic Sawantwadi Palace was constructed in the 18th century and belongs to the Sawantwadi family. The royal palace looks marvellous from outside and inside it, there are many rare photographs, elegant artefacts and games. The Moti Talao Lake is another noteworthy attraction here.

6. Khandala: Duke’s Nose, Tiger’s Leap, Rajmachi Point and Amrutanjan Point

If you’re taking the NH48 route, Khandala hill station will be easy to access. The major attractions here are Duke’s Nose, Tiger’s Leap, Rajmachi Point and Amrutanjan Point.

7. Lonavala: Kune Falls, Bhushi Dam, Lonavala Lake, Karla Caves and Bhaja Caves

Lonavala, located in Western Ghats’ Sahyadri range, is one of the most popular hill stations in Maharashtra. The mesmerizing beauty of this place is a literal treat to the sore eyes. Some must-visit places in Lonavala are Kune Falls, Bhushi Dam, Lonavala Lake, Karla Caves and Bhaja Caves.

Route 1: Mumbai to Goa via NH 4

Mumbai to Goa via NH 4 will take you on a smooth route marked by wide roads fit for fast driving. It’s a straight four-lane road all along, dotted with excellent stopovers. While driving along this route, you can explore a number of attractions, including forts, lakes, and temples, and even a wildlife sanctuary. This is the ideal route to follow if you are out on a family trip. However, be prepared to encounter quite a few toll booths along the way. The roads on this route are pretty smooth, making it ideal for people with motion sickness.

Route : Starting from Mumbai, you will travel to Pune via the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. Then you will follow NH 4 to make your way through Satara, Kolhapur, and Belgaum before you finally reach Goa.

Travel Time : 10 hours 30 minutes (approx.) without any detours

Pune : Among the notable tourist places to visit in Pune are the Shivneri Fort, Aga Khan Palace , Sinhagad, Shaniwar Wada Palace, and Pataleshwar Cave Temple. If you are traveling with kids, make sure to visit the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park.
Satara : The main attraction of Satara is the Kaas Plateau or the valley of flowers that boasts of 850 species of flowering plants. The Natraj Mandir, Juna Rajwada, and Nava Rajwada are among the other attractions you can visit while passing through this city.
Kolhapur : The quaint city of Kolhapur is famous for a number of tourist attractions, including the ancient Mahalakshmi Temple, the spellbinding Rankala Lake, and the historic Panhala Fort. A visit to Chatrapati Shahu Museum will let you get a glimpse of several artifacts belonging to the bygone eras.

Route 2: Mumbai to Goa via NH 66

The winding route of NH 66 from Mumbai to Goa will offer you a thrilling ride, with the majestic Western Ghats serving as the backdrop. Adding to the whole experience are the narrow, steep roads at high altitude that are barricade-less on the sides in most places. A popular route for thrill-seekers, it is ideal for those who are expert at maneuvering vehicles through such terrains and treacherous corners. You can find a number of spots to explore while journeying from Mumbai to Goa by car or bike through this route, including historic sites, heritage structures, and even religious destinations. Try avoiding this route if you are prone to motion sickness.

Route : Commencing from Mumbai, this route will take you through Panvel, Pen, Kolad, Khed, Chiplun, Pali, and Sawantwadi before you finally reach Goa.

Travel Time : 12 hours (approx.) without any detours
Ganpatipule : The Ganpatipule Beach may not be as famous as the beaches in Goa , but it is a beauty in itself with several water sports facilities. The Swayambhu Ganpati Temple here is a big draw for the tourists and pilgrims alike.
Karnala Bird Sanctuary and Karnala Fort : A popular destination in Panvel for bird lovers, the Karnala Bird Sanctuary is home to more than 222 species of birds. The Karnala Fort also lies within the boundary of the sanctuary and is worth a visit.
Pen : The place is famous for making huge Ganesha idols. Spending some time here will allow you to get a closer look at how skilled artisans make these gigantic idols.
Kolad : A haven for adventure enthusiasts, Kolad is where you can enjoy white water rafting at its best. The Bhira Dam is one of the popular places where you can catch up on all the action of white-water rafting.
Tamhini Ghat Waterfalls : Falling against the backdrop of lush greenery, this waterfall presents a magnificent sight. You can also visit the Kansai Waterfalls, which is situated not far from Tamhini Ghat.
Dapoli : The coastal hamlet of Dapoli near Khed is dotted with many attractions in and around it, including the Harnai Port, Panhalakaji Caves, and the temple of Kadyavarcha Ganapati. Do not miss out on visiting the Unhavare hot springs, which are also in the vicinity of Dapoli.
Murud : If you take a detour to Murud, which is a small coastal village, you can go for a dolphin-spotting trip. A trip to the Kasa Fort is a must when you visit this place.
Chiplun : Standing on the banks of River Vashishti, Chiplun is rich in several natural wonders like the Guhagar beach and the Sawatsada waterfalls. Among the man-made marvels defining this place are the Lord Parashurama Temple, Koyna Dam, and the Pandavaas Caves, which are believed to have been built by the famous Pandava brothers of the Mahabharata .
Sawantwadi : The tranquil setting of Sawantwadi is a pleasant change from the chaos of city life. Adding to its beauty is the Sawantwadi Palace that takes you back in time. The huge Moti Talao situated near the palace is another majestic attraction to explore here.

Kolad is a good place to pamper your taste buds with a satisfying breakfast. The place has many eateries where you can get fresh breakfast items to pep you up with energy. Shreekar – The Dhaba is a popular place to enjoy a decent breakfast. Chiplun is a popular stopover for lunch on the NH66 route. If you’re craving for local cuisine, do make a stop here else continue munching from the stock you’re carrying from home and directly stop at Goa.

During your drive from Mumbai to Goa, you will find many small villages and towns with ATM facilities and petrol pumps. Kolad, Mangaon, and Indapur are a few such names. Make sure to refuel your car or bike adequately during the trip to keep going without any hitches.

Generally speaking, December and January are the best and the busiest times to visit Goa. Goa shines in a different light filled with the hustle bustle of locals and tourists. If you are planning to visit Goa during these months, be sure to plan ahead and book in advance. If you are the kind of person who prefers solitude, you may want to hit the road between February and June or October and November. Goa is the cheapest during the monsoons so that could also be an option.

Places To Eat In Goa

Goan cuisine is one of the best fusion cuisines I have encountered. The perfect blend of chilies, coconut, rice, and other spices are mouthwatering. There is a famous saying in Konkan “Prodham Bhookt, magi mookt” which roughly translates to “You cannot think wisely until you are well fed”. Some of the famous places where you can get local delicacies are Starlight which serves a delectable Fish Thali. It is also recommended to eat at Laxmi Family restaurant for a filling experience. Crab curry and grilled crabs with some local authentic spices.

Goa is about 600 kilometers from Mumbai and it takes about 11 hours to reach if you drive without stopping.

From Mumbai, take the Mumbai Pune Highway. Once you have exited that highway, continue with the Bengaluru-Mumbai Highway for another 500 kilometers. Continue with NH48, AH47, NH748 to Khanapur. The entire route looks like

Mumbai--Lonavala--Kapurhol--Khandala--Satara--Kasegaon--Kagal--Belgaum-Akheti--Codli--Bandoli, Goa.

What to Eat and Stopovers

The journey from Mumbai to Goa offers multiple places to fulfil your quest for hunger and gives you ample opportunities to enjoy nature and even take a night break if needed.

Indian and continental food is available at multiple restaurants and dhabas on the way. You will never be far away from an eatery. Here are a couple of good, well-known places to have a bite.

Namaskar Hotel at Malkapur and Dhabas at Satara are also very famous.

There are many famous stopovers which you should experience.

Malavli Hills: A wonderful place to halt and experience some of nature’s best scenes. It is a slight detour (about 5 - 10 minutes) but is totally worth it.

Pashan Lake, Pune: A perfect spot for a small picnic. This is one of the most visited places in Pune and will serve perfectly for a break.

Reaching there and places to visit

One of the first things which come to mind when we think about Goa is Beaches. And rightfully so. Goa is very well known for its beaches but there are other attractions as well which deserve your visit. Some of the most visited places in Goa include:

Baga Beach: Full to the brim with multiple activities, Baga beach is one of the most famous. If you are bored of sitting near the water, get in and enjoy some water sports which are offered here. They include jet skiing, parasailing, banana ride and many more.

Grand Island : While you will find some activities somewhere, Grand Island is the culmination of all. Activities such as diving and even fishing are done here. The “Suzy” wreck and the “Davy Jones Locker” are two places which are especially popular. Divers love these sites. What better than to end the day by eating what you have caught while fishing.

Aguada Fort: This ancient fort has been standing through ages and has seen the test of times. It was built in 1612 and still stands strong. The architecture gives a good glimpse of the Portuguese style of built and boasts some amazing views of goa.

Bom Jesus Basilica : This central landmark is one of the most important places to visit in Goa. Here, the incorrupt body of St Francis Xavier is kept. There is also a gallery of modern art in the Basilica.

Club Cubana: “Nightclub in the Sky” as it is well known as, is located in a remote location in North Goa. It is on the top of Arpora Hill. One of the great attractions for party people, you might be able to find your rhythm here. Although a nightclub, it has some restrictions. It is open only from October to April. It usually caters to couples. Stag entries are not preferred. Ladies, on the other hand, are most welcome.

Flea Markets: Goa has some famous flea markets. A couple of them include the Wednesday afternoon Anjuna market and the Saturday night market. These are great places to shop and test your bargaining skills.

Dona Paula: This former village is now a tourist destination. The National Institute of Oceanography is located here.

Sunburn Festival : It has a mix of some of the best artists perform of some great food and amazing ambience.

Casino : This unique casino is located on a yacht in River Mandovi. You will be thrilled by the games and the environment. Most of the international games can be found here.

When travelling by bike, make sure you and the pillion wear a helmet, at all times. Also, wear proper protection while riding such as knee and elbow pads.

Points to note while planning a trip (bike/car).

If you are the kind of person who prefers solitude, you may want to hit the road between February and June or October and November. Goa is the cheapest during the monsoons so that could also be an option. If you are travelling by car, make sure your car is properly serviced. Another point to consider is to keep a copy of the route with you, in case weak internet connectivity renders you without an online map.

Charge your mobile phones properly and get a good night sleep before the journey. Keep your tire pressure optimum and make sure your stepney is fine. A handy thing to know would be how to fix small car problems such as punctures and an overheated engine.

Diesel/Petrol Pumps

As most of your road journey is on major highways, there is no problem with fuel. You will have multiple options to fuel up on your way. Since fuel prices vary, a suggestion would be to research on gas stations with cheaper fuel. It might be worth to take a little detour if you can get significant savings.

Overnight Halts

Ideally, the drive from Mumbai to Goa does not require an overnight stay but it also depends on the time of the day when you leave and if you want to have halts on the way. One good place to halt is Chiplun. It has some good resorts. If you do not prefer Chiplun, you may also halt at Ratnagiri which has some good, clean hotels.

The distance between Mumbai and Goa is about 600 kilometers and there is hardly any difference in the altitude.

Stay And Eat With Other Eating Places

Goa being a tourist destination, there are ample of places where you can stretch your legs, have an excellent stay and enjoy some good food. Here are some of the places.

Little India beach cottages, Baga: Rooms usually have attached bathrooms, spacious balconies, and air conditions. The food is also decent.

The Park, Calangute: This luxury hotel is situated right at the beach. Contemporary style rooms, designer furniture, pool, cabana, and other facilities grace the place. There is a “Love” restaurant and a very lively bar called “Peace”.

Marbella beach resort, Ashvem : This is one of the hippest resorts in North Goa. They have luxury tents as well as very spacious villas. The restaurant is very active and lively which serves local Goan dishes. This resort hosts some of the most happening parties.

Planet Hollywood beach resort, Utorda: This Hollywood themed, beach resort will take you to another world altogether. It has one of the biggest and best pools in Goa and you are treated as a movie star in this resort. Well maintained restaurant, spacious rooms, luxurious services, this resort is one of the best in Goa.

Greenland bar and restaurant : This restaurant serves some great Goan specialties including xacuti curries and vindhalo

La Plage: This restaurant has inspired gourmet French Mediterranean food. It has a fine collection of wines and some great salads as well.

Martin’s Corner: This is one of the few restaurants which has a good selection of vegetarian dishes as well. It also hosts local musicians and has live music on most nights.

Mobile Connectivity

You will not have any problems with mobile connectivity on the route and in Goa. It has multiple service providers and being a tourist attraction, these facilities are up to date.

There are multiple ATMs on the way as well as in Goa. Having said that, keeping some cash as a reserve is always better.

Mumbai Goa route is very frequently used. Hence, there are multiple stops where you can find mechanics. But, before starting the journey, make sure your car is in a well-maintained condition.

Medical Facilities

Medical facilities are also readily available on the way as well as in Goa. Some of the famous hospitals include Manipal Hospital, and Redkar Hospital and Research Center.

Electricity

You might experience some power outages while in Goa but they are rare and for a short duration of time.

No matter how well you have maintained your car, some tools are extremely important. These include tools for fixing a punctured tire, screwdrivers, a torch, extra batteries, hammer and duct tape.

One of my earliest travels was that a week-long Mumbai to Goa bike trip. This was back in 2008. A bunch of friends and I rode our motorbikes all along the Mumbai to Goa by highway (the erstwhile NH17) over a period of 10 days. We hardly spent 2 nights in Goa. Goa was just a place where we decide to take a U-turn and get back to Mumbai and back to our offices and the daily grind. Since then I’ve gone a number of motorbiking trips both in India and abroad. And I’ve traveled along the Konkan coast a number of times as well. Needless to say, that first trip remains one of my favorites yet. So here’s Mumbai to Goa road trip blog for all you enthusiastic road trippers. FAQ’S ABOUT MUMBAI TO GOA ROAD TRIP

When is the best time of the year to do a mumbai to goa bike trip.

The monsoon period from mid-June to mid-August is my favourite. Everything is lush green and there are waterfalls along every turn of the mountains of the Western Ghats. Of course, riding in rains is a different challenge all together but it has its own fun to it. For those of you who don’t like to get drenched the period just after monsoons is equally great. Starting January onwards the scenery tends to get a lot drier. But still, in the countryside, the evenings and nights are coolers as compared to the cities. Avoid the summer season of April and May when it can get really hot during the day and the nights are relatively warmer too.

What are the road and traffic conditions like?

There are basically two National Highways that you can take. One is the NH66 (the erstwhile NH 17 Mumbai Goa Highway) on which you will be riding Mumbai-Panvel-Chiplun-Kankavli-Panaji. The second is NH 48 which goes Mumbai-Pune-Satara-Kolhapur-Belgaum-Panaji

NH48 is 4 lane highway and there isn’t much to do or see except ride (or drive). While if you want to ride along the mountains or at times the coast, visit forts, eat amazing food then NH66 and a combination of State Highway 4 (more on that later) is your best bet. Of course, the NH66 hasn’t as smooth and blacktop roads like NH48. But for the sheer pleasure of riding along twists and turns and quaint villages and rice fields, and loading your bike on jetty to avoid long detours I’ll choose a combination of NH 66 and SH4 and ride back to Mumbai via NH48 visiting the towns of Kolhapur and Pune on the way back.

What are accommodation facilities like? And food?

If you stick close to the highway are decent size towns like Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Sawantwadi along the NH 66 (or close by you’ll have decent enough hotels to spend the night. While if you decide to get closer to the beaches there are plenty of resorts. In fact, there are some resorts with fantastic views owned by MTDC in Konkan in places like Harihareshwar, Vijaydurg, Tarkarli and CondeNest Traveller has some great recommendations for cool places to stay on the Konkan coast.

However, through one word the food is lip-smacking. Of course, there are the dhabas along the highway which serve the usual fare like your chicken tikka masala and butter naan and dal fry. My recommendation is to ditch them in favour of the local cuisine. Try out the thalis/rice plate of various kinds of fish, chicken, prawns or vegetarian for lunch or dinner. As for breakfast have some lovely poha or a spicy misal. And there’s always some bhajiya or vada pav for that mid-ride snack.

What kind of bike do you need?

I always believe that too for motorcycle touring the bike that you have with you at present is the best. People get too involved in the features and technology and all the jazz and forget the most important thing. To enjoy the ride. Any bike as long as it is maintained and serviced well enough will do. My answer might seem very vague but trust me. I’ve ridden on Bajaj Platina, TVS Fiero F2, RE Bullet, Bajaj Pulsar, and my very own beauty in Red – Honda Unicorn and I’ve enjoyed every bit of every ride one every bike ride along the Konkan.

What if my bike breaks down?

If you’re keeping yourself along the main highway NH66 you’ll find a mechanic or garage along the towns on the highway. And every few hundred meters you’ll see a signboard with a mechanics phone number written on it. You can call and they’ll come and fix your bike up. And you can always flag down a motorist passing by and ask them to send a mechanic from the next town along the highway.

It’ll be a bit more difficult than that if you’re along the back country roads of SH4. Don’t be discouraged though. It just means you’ll have to wait for a little longer till someone passes you by and you can ask them to help you out. The people of Konkan are some of the most helpful people I’ve met on my travels. So as long as you’re not long some dark deserted road in the middle of the night, it shouldn’t be a problem. To avoid all this make sure you service your motorcycle regularly and check all the nuts and bolts and what not before you begin riding.

How many days do I require to travel Mumbai to Goa by Road?

For an ideal road trip of Konkan, I’d recommend at least 10 days. However, as I will show you ahead you can still do a few weekend road-trips or and extended ones ranging from 2 days to 5 days. The Konkan countryside is a laidback place. Therefore it is essential that you take your time enjoying the views rather than trying to cram everything in.

KONKAN ROADTRIP ITINERARIES

As I mentioned earlier, the entire stretch from Mumbai to Goa by road can take anywhere between a week to ten days. However, a lack of vacation time should not deter you doing shorter rides along that stretch. Here are some Konkan road trip itineraries ranging from 2 days to a long weekend. And finally, a full two-week road trip plan from Mumbai to Goa and back. In fact, if you’re starting from Pune, you can use the below itineraries to plan a trip from Pune to Goa by road as well. Just replace the Mumbai with Pune and hit the road. And in places you can’t/shouldn’t I’ll suggest an alternative route plan.

Mumbai-Alibaug-Mumbai | ~200 km | 2 days

This little coastal town a 100 km from Mumbai is that perfect getaway when you need a quick and a short escape from the clutches of the city. Also, it is a perfect gateway to life in Konkan when you visit the little villages on the outskirts of Alibaug. Start early in the morning and have breakfast at Datta snacks on the outskirts of Panvel. Trust me, there is a reason why this place is packed with patrons. Afterwards, continue on NH 66 until Vadkhal Naka and then onto NH166 A to Alibaug. You can spend the day at exploring various naval forts in Alibaug. Being a strategic point along the coast, the Naval chief of King Shivaji developed the town in the 17th century. Kulaba fort is in Alibaug itself and during the low-tide, you can walk to the fort. While the twin forts of Khanderi and Underi, Sagargad and Murud Janjira are a short ride away from the town. Mind you, the forts are in ruins though. And there is a lack of information about their history. But if nothing, they do offer fantastic views of the surrounding areas. As well as tickling your imagination about the time gone by

Or you can just spend the day getting some sun at various beaches of Alibaug like Kashid, Nagaon, Rev Danda. Or indulge yourself in some pampering and luxury like fellow blogger Deepika did. On your way back you can spend a couple of hours at Karnala bird sanctuary and hike up to the Karnala fort. It’ll take approximately a couple of hours. For travellers from Pune, hit the Mumbai-Pune expressway and exit at Khalapur toll on to Khopoli-Pen highway (SH104/NH88) towards Pen and drive ahead to Alibaug.

Mumbai-Raigad Fort-Mumbai | ~320 km | 2 days

Raigad fort was built more than a 1000 years ago and then renovated in the 17th century by the Maratha King Shivaji. The fort is a wonderful place to ride to understand the history and importance of the Konkan in the past. Instead of turning towards Alibaug at Vadkhal, continue on NH66 until the just before the town of Mahad where you’ll have to turn left to ride towards Pachad wherein lies the base of the fort. From there it is 2-3 hour hike to the top. Or you can fly to the top in 15 min in a cable car.

Once at the top you can spend the late afternoon and early evening exploring the fort. Or hire a local guide to take you around. Keep in mind that they may fill their commentary with legends and folklore about the late king rather than facts. But the larger than life persona they present and the grandeur of the fort they explain will definitely have you entertained. MTDC has accommodation options available but don’t you go looking for luxury. They are decent enough for a night.

On your way back you can pay a quick visit to Gandharpale cave, a set of 30 Buddhist caves near Mahad. And if you leave before sunrise, you may be able to raft on the Kundalika river in Kolad

Raigad Fort

Mumbai-Shrivardhar-Harihareshwar-Dapoli-Mumbai | ~550 km | 3-4 days

Dapoli, a small town in the Ratnagiri district in the state of Maharashtra is considered the heart of Konkan. Once you turn westwards from NH66 the route along the coast offers some fantastic views and some of the friendliest and most helpful villages.

Following the day 1 itinerary of Alibaug or Raigad (take your pick) head to Diveagar. That means if you spent day 1 at Raigad then head to Mangaon on NH 66 and then follow State Highway 97 (SH97) all the way to Divegar. While if you spent your first day in Alibaug head to Rajapuri where you’ll get a ferry across to the village called Dighi. From here ride to Shrivardhan and Harihareshwar. Harihareshwar is quite well known for its Shiva temple. Move ahead to Bagamandala where you’ll get a jetty to Bankot across the river Savitri. Proceed to Kelshi, then on to Aade to Anjarle via Padale and Savarne and call it a day. If you still have time, proceed to check out the fish market at Harnai beach, watch the sunset and spend the night at Harnai.

The next morning you can visit the Suvarnadurga fort and after a lunch make your way to Ladghar Beach and while your time away. If you don’t have that extra-night to spend at Ladghar you can head back to Mumbai via Dapoli and then on to NH66

Mumbai to Goa by the Coastal Route NH66+SH4+NH48 | ~1200 km | 10-15 days

This is the ultimate road trip in this corner of the planet. It has the offers you ride through pleasing villages, scenic beaches, forts and ruins, backcountry roads without traffic or pollution and state of the art highway on the way back. If you have around 2 weeks to spare I’d strongly recommend you to take this completely off the beaten path road trip.

Following the trip plans above end your day 1 at Alibaug (or Raigad), day 2 at Anjarle/Harnai and day 3 at Ladghar. On the morning of the fourth day head towards Dabhol. Here you’ll find a jetty to take across the river Vashisht. After a short ride, you can take a break and enjoy the beach at Velneshwar. Then take another ferry across River Jaigad at Tavsal. After alighting on the other side at Jaigad jetty, you can spend some time exploring the ruins of Jaigad Fort. From there on to Ganpatipule to visit the very famous Ganesh temple and then you can call it a day at Ratnagiri.

After spending the night in Ratnagiri, you can spend the morning visiting Thibaw palace. The Britishers exiled the last king of Myanmar and placed him under house arrest here and he spent the last of his days. You can even consider taking a break after the previous 4 days of riding. And Ratnagiri is a big enough town and you’ll get everything you need. Hotels which will have Wifi connectivity, great seafood, markets and museums to visit.

From Ratnagiri move ahead to Vijaydurg which is the oldest fort in the Konkan region dating to 12th century. The Arabian sea surrounds the fort on 3 of the four sides making it almost impregnable. Make sure to watch the sunset from the ramparts of the fort. It is truly breathtaking. The next morning head to Malvan and enjoy another one of those seafood thalis for lunch if you are a seafood fan. If not, the vegetarian thalis offer a lot more variety. And make sure to end your meal with a glass of sol kadi. You can spend a night or two along the plenty of homestays by the beach. Lie down in a hammock in the garden, read a book, go for a swim, repeat.

Malvan is quite a popular destination for people from both Pune and Mumbai. So accommodation may be difficult if you arrive on a long weekend. If you want to be away from the crowds then ride ahead to Vengurla and spend a few days there. Next, as you cross the River Tiracol, you’d have officially entered Goa. Depending on how much you like Goa after the seclusion that Konkan has to offer, spend a night or two or four before you make your way back. On your way back you can either take the NH66 or ride across the Western Ghats via Amboli Ghat. Once you’re on the eastern side of the mountains you can visit Kolhapur and head north on NH48 to Pune. And then onwards to Mumbai. Kolhapur and Pune are both big cities with lots of history, art and culture.
