Owen Farrell kicked a pressure penalty three minutes from time to give the British and Irish Lions a dramatic 24-21 victory over 14-man New Zealand in Wellington.
The All Blacks had Sonny Bill Williams sent off on 25 minutes for a shoulder charge on Anthony Watson but Lions indiscipline was punished by Beauden Barrett, who kicked the world champions into an 18-9 lead with 22 minutes remaining.
However, Taulupe Faletau gave the Lions hope when he powered over in the corner on the hour mark and Conor Murray crossed for a second eight minutes later to level proceedings.
With the game in the balance, a late tackle on Kyle Sinckler by Charlie Faumuina presented Farrell with the chance to secure victory, and the Saracen slotted his fifth successful kick of the game to set up a set up a series decider in Auckland next Saturday.
The sides were level at 3-3 when Williams smashed Watson in the head as the wing ran the ball back. The TMO brought the incident to Jerome Garces' attention and the French official reduced the All Blacks to 14.
New Zealand reacted by sacrificing a flanker, Jerome Kaino replaced by centre Ngani Laumape, and that helped the Lions in the set piece as they were under pressure at the scrum.
Some uncharacteristic errors from Murray and Johnny Sexton, followed by penalty concessions, allowed Barrett to keep New Zealand's noses in front but Brodie Retallick was pinged on the stroke of half-time and Farrell kicked his third three-pointer to lead the sides deadlocked at 9-9 at the interval.
The Lions' penalty count moved into double figures after the restart as Barrett fired New Zealand into an 18-9 lead, and Warren Gatland would have been tearing his hair out when Mako Vunipola was sin-binned for clattering into Barrett at a ruck.
But a trademark Sexton wraparound got them back into the game, with quick hands from Liam Williams releasing Watson up the wing. Sexton then combined with Farrell, the latter throwing a cut-out pass to Williams and he found Faletau, who barged through Israel Dagg to score.
A Barrett penalty made it 21-14 but the Lions went level on 68 minutes when Jamie George ran a fantastic line off Sexton and Murray punished poor positioning by TJ Perenara to cross.
Farrell then held his nerve at the death as the Lions claimed their first victory over New Zealand since the second Test in 1993.
Man of the match
Sonny Bill Williams became the first All Black to be sent off since Colin Meads in 1967 when he caught Anthony Watson in the head with his shoulder.
The centre made no attempt to wrap his arms and left referee Jerome Garces with little option but to brandish the red card.
"It was a challenge that was totally unnecessary and put a lot of pressure on his team," said former All Blacks skipper Sean Fitzpatrick.
Talking point
The All Blacks may have been the side reduced to 14 men but it was the Lions' indiscipline which almost cost them victory.
Once again they hit double figures, Vunipola conceding four of their 13 penalties, and the prop was sin-binned on 56 minutes.
Luckily for the Lions, Barrett didn't have his best night from the tee, the fly-half missing three kicks at goal.
Putting aside the number of penalties conceded, the Lions were ferocious in contact, and that led to a fantastic battle on the gainline.
Sean O'Brien moved into the midfield off New Zealand set pieces to counter the powerful runs of debutant Laumape and the tourists played the wet conditions well, Maro Itoje central to their rolling mauls from restarts.
The Lions failed to turn pressure into points in the opening quarter but they certainly made it count in the second half, Faletau and Murray both scoring well-worked tries.
Not bad from a Lions point of view but New Zealand will be reeling after their 46-Test unbeaten record on home soil was ended at a wet Westpac Stadium.
Barrett let the tourists off the hook with his errant place-kicking.
"We left nine points out there," said former All Black Jeff Wilson. "The reality is we could have gotten 30 points from place kicks."
When beaten by Ireland last November, New Zealand produced an incredibly physical riposte in the return fixture in Dublin. The Lions can expect similar in Eden Park next Saturday.
Warren Gatland
"I am a happy clown this week! It is great to tie the series up and we go to Auckland with everything to play for.
"Even with the red card, we were the better team, deserved to win and played some good rugby."
Steve Hansen
"While I am very proud of our team of how we hung in there with 14 men, you have got to take your hat off and say well done to the Lions.
"He (the referee) made the call so whether he got it right or wrong is irrelevant. I have always said you have got to go with what he decides.

Rewind: Previous Lions Tours
1904: The tourists who awoke the beast
The Lions from the start confronted issues which complicate their existence, and in some cases have persisted to this day. Not the least of their difficulties was raising a half-decent team. The time taken to travel to and from New Zealand in the age before air travel meant that the only players who could accept a tour invitation were those who could afford several months off work.
1908: An unmitigated shambles
The 1908 tour of New Zealand is something of an anomaly. The squad was described, correctly, at the time as an Anglo-Welsh team. It played in red shirts with white hoops and attempted to counter the haka with a 'war cry' consisting of the words "Rule Britannia, Cymru am Byth (both repeated three times) hip, hip, hurrah (also repeated three times)".
1930: The tour remembered most for its manager Bim Baxter
Some Lions tours are associated with particular players, often captains, in the way that the undefeated 1974 team in South Africa will for ever more be identified with Willie John McBride. With others it is coaches -- Carwyn James in 1971 or Clive Woodward in 2005. But the 1930 party which visited New Zealand is remembered most of all for its manager, the forthright James 'Bim' Baxter.
1950: The Lions who revitalised New Zealand rugby
The team of 1950 were the first modern Lions, recognisable except in the matter of playing 30 matches to the eyes of 2017. They adopted the red shirts which are now as synonymous with them as gold is with Australian rugby and Brazilian football, also late adopters. And they were much more representative than their predecessors of the strength of British and Irish rugby.
1959: 'Attacking, silly rugby' that won Kiwi hearts
No British & Irish Lions party can have departed with less reason to hope, but few have returned to greater acclaim than Ronnie Dawson's 1959 team. They did not win the Test series, but could claim to have got closer to beating New Zealand than any of their predecessors.
1966: 'Haphazard' Lions continue decade to forget
The 1966 Lions could have got everything right and still lost their Test series against the All Blacks. By ultimately they were the co-conspirators in their own downfall.
1971: The Lions that stand alone in history
The Lions team of 1971 stands out from the other 11 which have visited New Zealand by virtue of one fact -- they won.
1977: Injuries, intolerable hope & relations
Measured purely by results the 1977 British & Irish Lions were among the most successful visitors to New Zealand, winning one Test out of four and coming within minutes of sharing the series. But it certainly was not seen that way at the time. Few if any Lions teams have been quite such a disappointment.
1983: The tour that began in hope but ended in calamity
The 1983 Lions tour of New Zealand looks to modern eyes like a marathon, an 18-match expedition including four tests. But to contemporaries, not least the Lions management team of Willie John McBride and coach Jim Telfer, who had been team-mates on the 35-match trip to New Zealand, Australia and Canada in 1966, it looked more like a sprint.
1993: The tour of great missed opportunity
The 1993 British Lions tour to New Zealand, the first for a decade, the last by players who were still officially amateur and the first since 1908 with only three Tests rather than four, comes into the category of 'missed opportunities'. Like the squad who visited Australia four years earlier they went into the final Test with a chance to win the series, but they didn't.
2005: The tour that threatened the Lions' existence
The most recent British & Irish Lions trip to New Zealand is by definition the most vividly remembered, not least by those of us who were lucky enough to be there. Yet it was at the time a venture whose failure, with a comprehensive whitewashing in the tests, seemed to threaten the future of the Lions.

New Zealand
The first Tour took place in 1888 but The British & Irish Lions did not meet New Zealand in a Test match until their clash at Wellington in 1904.
The sides will meet on three occasions during the 2017 Tour with the first Test set to take place at Eden Park in Auckland on June 24.
Brazil may be crazy about football and Indians even more fervent over their cricket, but rugby is so deeply ensconced in New Zealand culture that it’s impossible to imagine one without the other.
The All Blacks are the No.1 side in the world and in 2015 became the first-ever side to lift the Rugby World Cup twice in a row.
The country may not have given birth to the game, yet its people were certainly born to play it. The Lions have only once clinched a Test series in the Land of the Long White Cloud – John Dawes’ legends of the 1971 Tour inspired by Barry John and JPR Williams – so victory in 2017 would be all the sweeter.
That’s not to say there haven’t been famous Lions efforts since the legends of 71, with three of four Tests being decided by four points or fewer in the 1977 tour.
And in 1993, the slender 20-18 defeat in the first Test would come back to haunt a Lions side led by Gavin Hastings.
But from Colin Meads to John Kirwan and modern day hero Richie McCaw, the All Blacks have always taken some stopping.
The first task in 2017 will be to banish the memories of 2005’s 3-0 defeat in which Dan Carter came of age.
With another decade behind them, the Carter and McCaw duo have a combined collection of more than 250 caps and will go down as two of the most celebrated All Blacks in history.
Neither will line up against the Lions in 2017 but New Zealand have barely missed a step since their retirement.
They went on a record winning run of 18 Tests in 2016 (since matched by Eddie Jones’ England) and as of 2017, they had not been beaten at home in eight years.
The Lions will face them twice at Eden Park in Auckland – the first and third Tests – while the second Test will be in Wellington at the Westpac Stadium.

British and Irish Lions announce historic tour to New Zealand in 2027
British and Irish Lions flag.
The British and Irish Lions have announced they will send a women’s side to New Zealand for a historic three-Test series with the Black Ferns in September 2027.
In a first for the Lions which comes as a significant boost for the sport, the hugely anticipated tour will feature three showdowns against the current world champions.
The Lions issued a statement on Tuesday morning confirming that the tour will not overlap with 2027’s men’s World Cup in Australia and will include warm-up games.
Full schedule not confirmed
The Lions added that the full schedule had not yet been finalised.
“Playing three Test matches against the current world champions, the Black Ferns in New Zealand , in front of thousands of fans represents the ultimate challenge and makes for a fantastic sporting spectacle,” said British and Irish Lions chief executive Ben Calveley.
“We look forward to working with all our stakeholders including New Zealand Rugby to finalise an exciting inaugural tour.”
Mark Robinson, New Zealand Rugby CEO commented: “When the opportunity arose to be part of history and have the honour of hosting the inaugural British & Irish Lions women’s tour, we knew we wanted to be part of it.
