An all-out brawl that broke out between dozens of passengers aboard the Carnival Magic cruise ship was sparked over allegations of cheating while on the trip, according to an eyewitness passenger who shared video of the fight with Fox News Digital.

Theresa James, who said she is a travel agent, told Fox News Digital that the fight started just before 2 a.m. on the ship’s fifth floor, where a dance club and casino are located.

An alleged threesome between passengers had upset their significant others when they learned of the rendezvous, according to James, who said she witnessed the fight from her door.

Beer bottles were smashed, and a woman may have been cut during the chaos, James said.

The brawl lasted about an hour, according to the travel agent, and took the parties involved from the fifth floor to the ship’s first floor, which James described as a huge distance. She said the altercation wasn’t physical the whole time, and an estimated 60 people may have been involved.

James credited Carnival and its security team for jumping in and bringing the situation under control.

She described the guests involved in the fight as "ignorant fools acting stupid" and said the situation could have been worse if not for security.

Security had to  call in the Coast Guard  to help escort the ship to shore, according to the New York Post.

The ship arrived Tuesday morning with New York police waiting as it docked. Carnival said the ship docked in Manhattan as scheduled.

It's unclear if  anyone was arrested  or if New York or New Jersey authorities would handle it or another jurisdiction since it may have happened over international waters.

Meanwhile, James said that while the cruise got intense toward the end, it was an overall great vacation, and she has already booked another one with Carnival for August.

Massive Brawl Breaks Out on Carnival Cruise Ship

Earlier this month, a massive fight broke out between multiple Guests on a Carnival Sunrise cruise.

A considerable amount of people all engaged in the intense brawl, smacking, punching, and hitting each either in the process. Multiple videos spread across all forms of social media, including in a tweet which you can see below:

As reported by  The Orlando Sentinel ,  one passenger commented on one of the videos and claimed that up to 30 people got involved in the fight. “All I know is, I was filling my cup up with lemonade then, boom, they were knuckin’ and buckin’! Whew, you just had to be there,” another TikTok user commented.

In one of the videos, a woman off camera shouts, “That’s a b-tch-as- move.” A man wearing a lanyard who appears to be an employee attempts to tone down the violence but is eventually overwhelmed.

Several passengers started to record the fight as it went on, meaning there were multiple accounts of the incident. Another tweet showing a new angle is linked down below:

The various videos show a large group of individuals beating on one another as people scream and try to intervene. A whistle can be heard in the background as the fight goes on. Some claimed the fight started because of an argument about a deck chair, but we cannot confirm this is the reason the fight broke out.

The Sunrise was on the tail end of a five-day, round-trip cruise in the Western Caribbean.

It’s unclear if any arrests were made or if anyone involved was injured.

This is a developing story, we will update our article as more information comes out.

Carnival cruise brawl broke out after alleged threesome sparks cheating accusations: witness.

This threesome rocked the boat.

A wild brawl that erupted on the dance floor of a Big Apple-bound Carnival cruise ship was sparked by jealousy over a ménage à trois, according to a report.

The chaotic fight broke out between roughly 60 people near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge on Tuesday when significant others accused their partners of cheating in a threesome, passenger Theresa James told FOX News Digital.

The skirmish started in a nightclub on the fifth floor of the Carnival Magic ship at around 2 a.m. after the angry lovers confronted their respective partners for two-timing on the seven seas, according to James, a travel agent who watched the fracas from her room.

The brawlers then began shoving each other and smashing beer bottles, and a woman may have been sliced during the melee, which quickly spiraled out of control, James said.

“Ignorant fools acting stupid,” she said.

The dust-up lasted roughly an hour and spilled into the casino area on the same level of the ship, she said.

The scrum of fighters eventually moved from the fifth floor to the first, and the altercation wasn’t physical the whole time, James said.

The ship’s security team tried to break up the fight, James said, and eventually called the US Coast Guard.

‘Out of nowhere’

She credited security guards with finally getting the unhinged passengers under control.

Another passenger, tweeting under the handle @nyeem0, said he was “at the bar listening to my own music sipping a Shirley Temple, then the brawl broke out of nowhere!”

He said some passengers were “injured and cut up from glass” and that “most if not all’” of the ship’s security guards rushed to the club to stop the violence.

“It was the last night so i guess they wanted to go out with a bang,” he added.

VIDEO: Massive Brawl Breaks Out on Carnival Magic Cruise Ship

A massive fight breaks out on the Carnival Magic involving up to 60 passengers following allegations of cheating and threesomes

The huge fight was allegedly caused by a threesome amongst passengers that upset the displeased partners of the participants.

A fight involving up to 60 participants broke out aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship returning to New York City following an eight-day Caribbean cruise this week.

Initial reports indicated the fight onboard the Carnival Magic was in response to allegations of cheating and threesomes amongst the participants. Units from the New York City Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard were on hand as the vessel docked in New York, but they did not board the ship due to jurisdictional concerns.

“Last night while Carnival Magic was returning to New York, a number of guests were involved in an altercation in a nightclub. Thankfully no serious injuries were reported, and our onboard security team intervened,” Carnival Cruise Lines said in a statement regarding the incident. “The ship arrived as scheduled this morning and shoreside law enforcement authorities were notified and met the ship to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation.”

The Carnival Magic cruise ship

One passenger who witness the fight told  Fox News Digital  the melee broke out shortly before 2 a.m. on the fifth floor where a casino and dance club are located. Official reports indicate only that the fight took place sometime before 5:20 a.m. Theresa James, who is also a travel agent, said the fight took place just outside her fifth-floor cabin between “ignorant fools acting stupid” and lasted around an hour, taking place over multiple floors. She noted the fight was not physical during the entire hour, but that beer bottles were thrown in addition to punches, and that at least one woman might have suffered injuries.

Local broadcaster  WPIX  said the fight began with two people on the dance floor. James told  Fox  the cause of the fight was an alleged threesome between cheating passengers that upset the participant's partners.

Video of the incident showed a violent free-for-all amongst both male and female passengers. In one clip, a man appears to drag a woman by the hair across the floor while others are throwing punches.

Jurisdictional questions prevented police from boarding the vessel, but the NYPD has opened an investigation.

“We wanted to make sure that when the individuals got off the boat there was no further disputes on the streets in Manhattan,” an NYPD spokesperson told  Patch . ‘They were there to expedite the disembarkation process.'”

The Carnival Magic was returning from an eight-day cruise to the Caribbean with stops in Dominicana, Turks and Caicos, and a private Bahamian island.

All hell broke loose poolside on board a Carnival Cruise ship earlier this month.

A shocking new video has emerged showing two groups involved in a verbal altercation by the Tides Bar beside the swimming pool on board the Carnival Sunrise ship.

The verbal dispute, that involved some pushing and shoving, eventually turns extremely violent.

The violence culminates with a man pummeling a woman while she's on the ground and he leans over her.

The fight goes on for at least a minute before members of the cruise line's security team begins to intervene and separates the groups as the shouting continues.

According to the woman originally posted the video on TikTok, Laura Bryant, who coincidentally works as a 911 dispatcher, the fight was over 'a seat and personal space.'

At one point, Bryant can be heard commenting that a woman lost her wig in the melee.

Bryant said that the brawl took place on Friday September 9. It's not clear where exactly the ship was when the fight broke out.

Records show that the Carnival Sunrise made stops in Ocho Rio, Jamaica, Grand Cayman Island and Miami, Florida, around the time that beating took place.

One person who witness the incident commented on the post saying: 'All I know is, I was filling my cup up with lemonade then boom, they were knuckin’ and buckin’... you just had to be there.'

Another witness said that they left the scene just before the fight. Prior to leaving, that witness said that one of the groups was playing cards and it seemed like  'everybody vibing' when he left.

While another commenter said: 'The Cruise lines need to implement harsh punishment for those who get into altercations. These videos are hurting the cruise industry from attracting new cruisers, and possibly turning avid cruises away as well.'

Several other commenters blamed the excessive alcohol served on board while another referred Carnival as the 'Spirit Airlines of the sea.'

The Sunrise has been part of the Carnival fleet since October 1999. The ship can carry 3,000 passengers in addition to a crew of 1,100.

According to the Carnival Cruise  code of conduct,  'disruptive behavior is not tolerated and any guest whose conduct affects the comfort, enjoyment, safety or well-being of other guests or crew will be disembarked at their own expense and banned from sailing on Carnival in the future.'

Back in June, a  massive brawl broke out on the Carnival Magic as it returned to New York City , prompting the Coast Guard to escort the ship back to dock and the NYPD to open a probe.

The fight began in the nightclub of the Carnival Magic at about 5.20am on the final night of the ship's eight-day Caribbean cruise with stops in Dominicana, Turks and Caicos, and the Bahamas.

Video of the fracas shows a chaotic scene as dozens of passengers punch and shove each other, while an outnumbered ship security guard tries in vain to break up the fight.

The brawl started as an altercation between two passengers on the dance floor, and cops say it widened into a fight involving as many as 40 to 60 passengers, according to PIX11 . No serious injuries were reported.

The brawl took place as the ship approached harbor in New York, but it's unclear whether the vessel was in New York, New Jersey, or international waters at the time of the fight, making criminal jurisdictional issues murky.

There were no arrests reported reported in the aftermath of the fight, and it was unclear which agency would lead the investigation.

Following the fight, cruise line officials notified the Coast Guard, which launched a boat from Staten Island to escort it to dock in Manhattan, according to WNBC-TV .

Dance Floor Brawl on NYC-Bound Cruise Sparks Coast Guard Escort, NYPD Probe

"thankfully no serious injuries were reported and our onboard security team intervened," carnival magic said in a statement, published june 28, 2022 • updated on june 28, 2022 at 1:26 pm.

Police are investigating after an all-out brawl erupted on a cruise ship as it headed back to New York overnight, authorities confirmed Tuesday after it safely arrived. Up to 60 people were ultimately involved in the fray over international waters, cops said.

The eight-day cruise aboard the Carnival Magic left its New York City-New Jersey hub on June 20, stopping in Dominicana, Turks and Caicos and a private island in the Bahamas before turning around and heading back toward the East Coast.

24/7 New York news stream: Watch NBC 4 free wherever you are

It's not clear what sparked the fight, but PIX 11 reported it started between two people on a dance floor and intensified as others joined in the fray. Anywhere from 40 to 60 people were involved in the fight by the time it was broken up, officials said.

Cruise officials notified the Coast Guard, which launched a small boat from Staten Island to escort the ship the rest of the way to its Pier 88 dock. Members of the NYPD, which the Coast Guard had notified, were standing by when it arrived.

There was no immediate word on possible arrests. Jurisdictional questions around where the ship was at the time of the altercation -- was it in international waters? New Jersey waters? New York waters? -- have yet to be answered so it's not entirely clear just yet which department or agency will lead the investigation.

Carnival Magic acknowledged the incident, saying, "a number of guests were involved in an altercation in a nightclub" as the ship returned to Manhattan.

"Thankfully no serious injuries were reported and our onboard security team intervened," the cruise line's statement continued. "The ship arrived as scheduled this morning and authorities were notified and met the ship to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation."

No injuries were reported and no weapons were involved, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Neither the Coast Guard nor the NYPD boarded the vessel, officials said. Passengers disembarked without further incident upon their NYC arrival Tuesday.

The Carnival Magic was built in 2011 and is registered in Panama. It is more than 1,000 feet long and sails to the Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada/New England and the Caribbean, from Port Canaveral, Norfolk, Miami and New York, on cruises that run anywhere from two to nine days. December is nearly upon us, and Carnival Cruise Line is gearing up for the Christmastime events that will be held across its entire fleet for the holiday season.

In a post on his Facebook page , brand ambassador John Heald shared a list of the Carnival Cruise Line Christmas themed activities and entertainment that passengers can expect for the coming month.

If you’re wondering when Christmas decorations will go up on each ship, check out Carnival’s Christmas decorating schedule here .

Atrium Celebrations

Tree lighting.

On embarkation evening, the grand Christmas tree in the atrium will be lit during a special ceremony complete with lights that are synchronized to Christmas music.

Ugly Sweater Contest

Guests can participate in an ugly sweater competition hosted by the cruise director. For sailings in Australia, since it’s their warm season this time of year, it will be a “holiday attire” competition instead of sweaters!

‘Tis The Season

Carnival ships will each host a Christmas caroling event, where passengers can sing along to holiday classics in their most festive outfits. (Santa might even make an appearance!)

Entertainment

Christmas show.

A special Carnival Cruise Line Christmas stage show will take place in the main theater, complete with singers, dancers, and a surprise guest flown in from the North Pole. Carnival describes the experience as evoking a “‘home-away-from-home’ atmosphere with its cozy set featuring comfy cushions and throws, a Christmas tree and of course, a visit from Santa.”

Holiday Movies

Christmas movies will be shown on ships that feature the Carnival Seaside Theater or in a lounge on ships without a big screen on the lido deck.

Rest assured, this Christmas season is ready to bring you plenty of tropical joy.

Embarkation Day

As you embark on your first day, you’ll immediately notice the Christmas decorations found throughout the ship. From wreaths to jingle bells to the ever popular mistletoe (pucker up!), each ship will leave no doubt that the holiday season is well underway. Stunning Christmas trees are set up in various parts of the ship too.

While at Sea

Carnival team members will go out of their way to keep you and your family well entertained and in the Christmas spirit with festive activities. From the tree lighting ceremony on the first evening to the Christmas carol sing-a-longs and special Holiday show (featuring appearances by Santa and the Grinch!), we have plenty up our sleeves for this most joyful season of the year. Both you and your kids can participate in our arts and crafts events, where you can make your own decorations and other festive trimmings. We bet your kids will love the opportunity to drop off their letter to Santa in the North Pole mailbox. Why not write a note yourself? You never know what type of response you’ll get!

Have you been waiting for the right season to enjoy all of those holiday movies? Good news! Join your fellow cruise guests and settle in for all of those Christmas favorites. Plus, now’s your chance if you’ve always wanted to join in on an Ugly Sweater Contest. Winners will receive a special prize.

Carnival holds a special, non-denominational Christmas service either December 24 or 25, depending on the cruise itinerary. This service will feature hymns, prayers and plenty of stories to bring everyone closer together during the holiday season.

The Christmas festivities, which begin the day after Thanksgiving and run through December 25, culminate in a delicious Christmas dinner. This dinner features traditional favorites like the Christmas turkey (oven-roasted with all trimmings) and pumpkin pie with whipped cream.

Christmas cruise on Freedom, A lot to process!

By cbringdrvr , December 29, 2023 in Carnival Cruise Lines

Recommended Posts

Cool Cruiser

Over a year ago in mid November , my family upon recommendation from me decided to book a Christmas cruise 2023. Seventeen people, six cabins on the 10th deck on Freedom.  Yes, I realized Freedom was an older ship but I have sailed and enjoyed other sailings in the same class as Freedom and I also knew it was undergoing a quick refurbishment in October. I have used the same PVP for about six years and was in direct communication with him as did the rest of the group.  On Black Friday ‘22 I did a ghost booking and the price for my cruise had gone down significantly so I called him and after some hesitation he agreed that I could indeed take advantage of the lower price.  Regrettably I did not notice that the confirmation email of the new price also included a change of my cabin only to deck 7 on opposite ends of the ship.  I take responsibility for not noticing.  However, at no time did he mention anything about changing cabins.  It was not until I printed documents that I realized this.  I immediately called and confirmed my greatest fear.  Ship was completely sold out,  PVP apologized.  I would have never, ever agreed to change cabins completely away from my children and grandchildren for the sake of saving money,   We always stay on deck above lido no matter the ship. It certainly did not ruin my vacay but it did most definitely affect it.

There are some other issues with this cruise I want to write about. I have read many reports that the quality of food and service overall has gone downhill significantly recently.  Having sailed most recently in May with great satisfaction , I scoffed at those reviews.  Sadly, overall the food was indeed disappointing. I do not expect 5 star cuisine  but four entrees in the MDR were awful(strip loin, an entree salad, parpadelle with lamb and fried chicken, previously a favorite ). We have enjoyed the buffet at lunch in the past but the quality and drink service was very disappointing.  In particular , the meal for Christmas was simply unacceptable..  We waited 45 minutes between our appetizer and entrees and then waited another 30 minutes after entree for dessert with no plates cleared or water refilled.  One of us never received our entree during all that time with no explanation when we inquired several times. We spent two full hours in the MDR , resulting in arriving late to several Christmas evening festivities.

The last item I want to address is the general feeling of safety.  The cruise started off with an aura of yuletide cheer but as the week progressed the atmosphere digressed as entire groups of very rowdy unsupervised teens and young adults roamed the ship.   They took delight in blocking hallways and stair landings, spitting on people in the atrium from above, etc.  On the last night of the cruise they boldly escalated their behavior to a dangerous level.  They were seen by my husband and others wearing ski masks while threatening people.  At one am the “Charlie” call came over the intercom system twice for security as large fights broke out on 9th deck.

I have been extremely loyal to Carnival for many years but I am ready to spend my vacations elsewhere. For all of the PR they are doing to improve their image, they are completely failing at implementation.  The  very heavy smell of weed at all hours of the day and night( so strong inside my cabin and on balcony and through out the ship) is proof that their heavily advertised announcements of intolerance is nothing short of a lie.  Much more importantly, for the first time in 15 plus cruises, I and my family no longer feel safe while sailing with Carnival. We sailed with four beautiful  , well behaved teenage granddaughters whose ability to enjoy the ship on their own was directly affected by this atmosphere.  Freedom security needs a complete overhaul.  They seemed to be very adept at catching those who took videos of the several fights as it was reported they commanded individuals to delete videos while they watched and verified.  They were also very adept at commanding people in cabins nearby to stay in their rooms even though they were getting texts from family members trying to reach each other out of fear for their own safety. Their concern for public image greatly eclipses their actual attention to creating a safe , enjoyable family atmosphere for people to sail and spend their hard earned money to create lasting memories.  My money can be spent elsewhere.  My loyalty to Carnival has suffered a tremendous blow, quite possibly, fatal.

Sorry your cruise was so disappointing to you.  While we have seen some of the issues you observed (slow dining room service, rowdy teens blocking stairways, weed smell on ships) we have never felt unsafe on a CCL ship.  Hopefully you went to guest services to report some of these things.  Also I would put my concerns in writing to CCL.  Mail it return receipt.  You may or may not get a response- but at least it is on record somewhere.

I hope that people will take these reports seriously. Carnival is a shadow of its former self. I am sorry you learned this all too late. I hope that people who read your review will take it seriously. We are not trying to diss Carnival - we are reporting our true experience. Ignore it at your peril.

dabomb6608

That kind of experience would certainly ruin it for me. I've mentioned to my wife I wouldn't mind trying out other cruise lines. It has been 3 years since our last cruise and we have only cruised with Carnival. I'm hoping our cruise in 8 days isn't anything like your experience.

One thing we will definitely be avoiding is 5 or less day cruises. Those shorter/cheap cruises seem to more often be the troublesome cruises.

I'm sorry there were so many issues on your cruise. Especially the safety aspect. The only thing I would say is there is no way for Carnival or any other cruiseline to know that people will act like that onboard. There does need to be a better system in place when it happens but they also have no way of knowing it WILL happen. I hope it went through the proper channels to put systems in place for the future.

Great Review

I will be on the Glory in January out of New Orleans for 7 days. I booked this cruise thinking most kids will be back in school and an older crowd. On my last cruise in early November, Security was very prevalent through out the cruise ship. I hope this is the case in New Orleans. In Jacksonville, the police were walking a dog on board during the boarding process. Again, I hope this is the case in New Orleans. We did not smell marijuana in November but have in the past. I am sorry you experienced this behavior. If you have videos, I would send to Carnival. If this happened on my cruise, Carnival would hear loud clear about the problem, especially if I had video evidence.

vacruisin

Sorry you had such a horrible experience; sounds like a lousy way to spend Christmas vacation with the family and you should definitely escalate your experience up the Carnival chain.

However, if you've previously sailed Carnival and enjoyed those cruises I would hope you'd chalk this up as an aberration and not just kick Carnival to the curb.  You said you'd enjoyed a May cruise; was it on Carnival?  Have you experienced such bad behavior on previous Carnival cruises?

Holiday cruises sometimes tend to bring rowdier crowds; and I've heard of some of the same kind of issues/behavior on other cruise lines.  Sometimes it is just a bad group on your particular sailing.

Yikes!! My DH, 2 DDs (21 & 23) and I will be cruising in a little over two weeks on Freedom. I experienced some rude behavior from passengers in general on our 4 day Elation Thanksgiving cruise out of Jacksonville but nothing like what you reported. I’ll be doing a LIVE on this upcoming cruise. Thank you for your review!!

I understand that they are unable to predict behavior, good or bad but this behavior escalated as the days passed with no noticeable increase in security in an obvious way.  Twice I went to the ninth deck late evening for pizza and saw no visible security at all.  I did see very loud rowdy behavior, not just the expected high energy of young people having fun in an acceptable manner.  I am platinum so I have a lot of Carnival cruise experiences to compare this to.

I agree. We only chose a five day beco because of work/school schedules of other family members.  We much prefer 7 day cruises.  We did cruise with 20 family members over Thanksgiving in 2019 and had none of these issues but society has vastly changed since then sadly.

I experienced some rude behavior from passengers in general on our 4 day Elation Thanksgiving cruise out of Jacksonville but nothing like what you reported. I’ll be doing a LIVE on this upcoming cruise. Thank you for your review!!

I am sure yours will be better!

I hope so, but it's also a five day cruise over MLK week. I was hoping that cruising out of PC would be better crowd-wise than Jacksonville, but now I'm not so sure.  My DH and I experienced a wonderful Carnival cruise out of Rome (10 day) and I'm wondering if that is because it was not a drivable port. I do think that Covid has brought out the worst in humanity with regard to manners in more arenas than just cruising.

prepare for the worst and hope for the best. short holiday cruises are rough on Carnival right now.

This was an issue on Celebration at Thanksgiving also - teenagers running and yelling in the halls and stairwells.  With Carnival catering to a younger crowd, I've decided this is likely on any cruise during a school break unfortunately.

We also had 1 fight (heard code Charlie calling security to deck 8 near guest services).  We saw one person removed from the ship in handcuffs as soon as we docked in Miami (not sure if it was related though).

Yep, our last cruise with Carnival was a 5 day one as well. It was cheap and a quick getaway with some friends right after my husband retired. We just didn't feel it was the same. But, we did also realize it was a 5 day cruise, which has a different vibe/crowd. We've done a 3 day one before, it was the same. We usually do at least 7 days. Either way, we've decided that Carnival will be on hold for awhile. Our next one is a big one for us, totally different line/experience, which is what we want. We're not big drinkers or party people, so we don't need all of that anyway. I guess the good thing is there are different lines to try and have different vacations for all sorts of people.

So sorry to hear about all of this! We sailed Freedom in July 2022 and didn't see anything like that! With that being said, I think the shorter cruises do have a different demographic. We did a 3-day Conquest cruise a while ago and that was a party booze cruise.

Also, sailing during holidays you get bigger crowds and unruly children (parent's fault, not Carnival's). We are sticking to longer cruises on Carnival and trying to avoid times when children are sailing since our kids are in college and for now we go without them.  We went on an 8-day cruise last January on the Horizon and it was very nice, no rowdy crowds or children.

Seems like Carnival's security was overwhelmed with the crowds and clientele. As others have said, when Carnival was offering deep discounts on their cruises after Covid, everyone was booking!

Totally agree!  My DH said if parents were fined $25 for every indiscretion, maybe the parents would monitor their children better.  I thought there was a fine for bad behavior, like fighting and not being able to cruise Carnival. 🤷‍♀️

I’m hung up on the not saving money by staying away from family. That sounds like a win-win to me.

Haha

I havent seen this behavior but just a general comment there are holidays and times like spring break when there are more kids. I cruised during middle of march and we had over 2k kids onboard. Planned way in advance during covid so we didnt consider spring break. I saw Christmas week also had more kids and Thanksgiving has double the kids in general.

Not saying kids are bad but in quantity they are noisy. They seem to screech while playing ping pong or mini golf. Swimming cant be done except at high decibels. Rcl is also advertising to attract families. Unless you book a more expensive line there will be kids during holidays. . Even good kids seem loud if you arent used to them. I'm sorry you had kids acting up and carnival didnt take care of the problem, just tried to cover it up.

I'm booked xmas 2024, I might wind up regretting it. Some I know are moving to celebrity and virgin just because fewer kids. Or princess or HAL.

I wish someone would try to make me delete a video I took on my phone. They're more worried that potential cruisers will see what is really happening on the ships on Tiktok. Once you're on the ship and it is clear you've entered the wild wild west of drugs fights and misbehaving kids it's too late.

Oh yeah, they should do that! Maybe that would make a difference!

Carnival Freedom's next two sailings canceled after funnel fire, second within 2 years

A fire in the exhaust funnel of the Carnival Freedom this weekend has disrupted a cruise for the second time in less than two years — and will mean that the Florida-based ship's next two sailings are canceled.

Damage to the funnel will require the cancellation of Carnival's next two cruises out of Port Canaveral, which were scheduled to depart Monday and Friday.

There were about 3,700 passengers onboard the ship when the fire occured. And the two upcoming sailings, which were canceled, likely would have had a similar passenger count amid the busy Spring Break season.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Carnival initially had said it expected no changes in its upcoming cruises, but on Sunday afternoon said the cancellations would be required.

"Regrettably, the damage is more than we first thought, and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," according to a statement issued by Matt Lupoli, Carnival Cruise Line's senior manager of public relations. "The funnel has been stabilized for the ship’s return to Port Canaveral overnight to disembark guests, and then it will go to the Freeport shipyard on Monday afternoon to begin the required repairs."

Carnival said it made the decision after "our technical team completed a thorough assessment" during the ship’s visit Sunday to Freeport in the Bahamas.

In the statement, Carnival said: "We sincerely regret the impact to our embarking guests, as we know they have been looking forward to their spring break vacation. We are providing all guests on both canceled cruises a full refund and a 100% future cruise credit, so they can come back and enjoy a future cruise with us. We also greatly appreciate the terrific guests who are currently sailing with us, for their outstanding cooperation and support."

In a Facebook post, Carnival's widely followed brand ambassador, John Heald, conceded that many people who booked one of the canceled cruises are "feeling very disappointed," and he apologized for the turn of events.

But, Heald added that he wanted to assure affected passengers that, "when you rebook, using your full refund and your 100% future cruise credit, that the crew will be standing by to give you all the fun you deserve."

More than 500 people responded to the post, with many saying they thought Carnival was generous with the compensation offer. But some people who said they were on the cruise that experienced the fire said they thought Carnival should have done more for the people who were on the ship.

Carnival said the fire was confined to the funnel area. The cruise line said there are no reports of injuries to passengers. Two firefighting crew members were treated for minor smoke inhalation.

Carnival said that, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday, the Carnival Freedom reported a fire on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel. The ship was 20 miles off Eleuthera Island, Bahamas, heading to Freeport after a canceled call to the Carnival private island of Princess Cays due to adverse weather.

"The ship’s fire response team was quickly activated, and the ship’s captain also turned the vessel towards the heavy rain in the area to maximize the efforts to put out the flames," an earlier Carnival statement said. "Eyewitnesses reported the possibility of a lightning strike, and that is being investigated, but cannot yet be confirmed."

By 5:20 p.m. Saturday, the fire was extinguished.

How safe are cruise stops? Travel advisories are only one marker for destinations

Carnival said the ship's captain made multiple announcements to passengers and crew, and advised all but essential safety personnel to stay away from balconies and all open decks.

The port-side portion of the funnel had fallen onto Deck 10, and the firefighting response put out any flames.

The U.S. Coast Guard has been notified of the fire, and Carnival activated its incident response team to support the ship’s crew.

Carnival said there were no other operational issues with the ship’s systems, and the ship, which was on a four-night cruise, was visiting Freeport on Sunday.

A cruise ship funnel generally serves as a smokestack to lift emissions above the deck, thus away from passengers and crew.

On Saturday evening, "Carnival Freedom guests enjoyed the Elegant Night dinner as planned, and, with the exception of the open decks, all areas of the ship are fully functioning," Carnival said in its statement.

The Carnival Freedom's next voyage was scheduled to depart from Port Canaveral on Monday afternoon on a five-night Eastern Caribbean cruise. That cruise had port-of-call stops scheduled at Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic and at Grand Turk Island in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

But that sailing and a Friday sailing both have been canceled. Friday's five-night sailing also was scheduled to stop at those two ports of call, but in reverse order.

In May 2022 , a fire broke out in the funnel area of the Carnival Freedom while it was docked in Grand Turk. Carnival then canceled three scheduled sailings of the Carnival Freedom out of Port Canaveral because of the need to repair the ship's fire damage at a shipyard in Grand Bahama.

More recently, in October 2023, the Carnival Freedom debuted a new iconic winged funnel after returning from a 16-day dry-dock refurbishment in Cadiz, Spain.
