English for Tourism: Using translated texts in the classroom to improve writing skills

Profile image of Gloria Cappelli

2016, Lingue e Linguaggi

– The article reports on the preliminary results a project aimed at developing the writing skills of elementary and lower-intermediate learners of English for Tourism. Coursebooks for the global market include writing activities and resources, but they usually do not take into account the learners’ L1 and their natural tendency to resort to it in the language classroom. As a consequence, in spite of progress in grammatical and lexical accuracy, learners’ written production often remains largely influenced by their L1 syntax, vocabulary and rhetorical strategies. This may have a negative impact on their ability to communicate effectively in the professional domain. Translation has been successfully used with advanced learners of ESP to exploit this tendency to relate the L1 and L2 lingua-cultural systems. However, translating can be too challenging for low-proficiency learners. To overcome this difficulty and obtain the same benefits offered by translation tasks, learners were asked ...

This paper reports on a project undertaken in a Japanese university ESP Tourism Industry Communication course, in which students searched for and collected examples of professional language from the web to create a class database of key lexis and colligational information. This lexis was subsequently used by students to create model destination websites for inbound tourism to Japan. In order to determine whether this pedagogical process resulted in website text that could be effective for its ostensible purpose of attracting international tourism, an online survey of potential inbound tourists was carried out that allowed respondents to compare text written by students for attractions in one destination to text from the official English website for the destination. Results indicated a strong preference for the student-written destination descriptions. Ease of comprehension, lack of extraneous detail, and description of concrete experiences were found to be the most important factors in this preference. Relationships between the survey data and lexicogrammatical features of both official and student writing are considered.

English Language Teaching

The quick development of the tourism and hospitality industry can straightly influence the English language which is the most widely used and spoken language in international tourism in the twenty-first century. English for tourism has a major role in the delivery of quality service. Employees who work in the tourism and hospitality industry are entirely and highly aware of its importance and they need to have a good command of English in their workplace. English for tourism and hospitality has been categorized under English for the specific purpose (ESP). It is an important and dynamic area of specialization within the field of English language teaching and learning. The necessity of teaching English for professional purposes and specifically in the area of tourism is irrefutable. Language proficiency is very important and essential in all professional fields specifically in the tourism and hospitality industry due to its specific nature and concepts. Thus, it is required that the educators understand the practical applications of this approach. This paper aims to provide an overview of the purpose of teaching ESP (English for Specific Purposes) and ETP (English for Tourism Purposes) to the learners and users. In addition, characteristic features of ESP and ETP concerning course development, curriculum planning, learning style, material development, English efficiency, types of activities and evaluation are outlined. Determining the ESP concepts and elements provides specific English instruction that could help the learners be well-prepared for meeting their workplace requirements.

There are increasing numbers of international students coming to Malaysia every year. One of the problems they face while they are learning English in ESL classrooms is to know whether it is beneficial or not for them to use their native language and translation as a tool for learning the second language. Second language researchers have also currently started to re-evaluate the role of translation and first language (L1) in ESL classrooms. This research was based primarily on an examination of direct and indirect (translated) essay writing in English by 25 college students from different Russian speaking countries having pre advanced and advanced level of English proficiency. The intension of this research is to investigate the quality of students’ writing with and without the use of translation by comparing and analysing their written output linguistically. The main research question in this study is: “How does translation help international students to improve their ESL essay wri...

Linguistic borders are cultural borders without sharp lines of demarcation. They become a middle space where cultural and linguistic elements from two different cultures meld into an interculture. One of the traits of this interculture as found in Brownsville, Texas, is a high incidence of natural bilingualism. A number of naturally bilingual students walk into translation classes at UTRGV. They have a basic building block for becoming translators, which is their ability to switch back and forth between languages. Other important translator competences include the ability to write professionally in at least two languages. This ability must often be developed in naturally bilingual students, because their upbringing in an interculture makes it hard for them to intuitively distinguish between what is seen as good writing by monolingual speakers of English on the one hand and what is seen as good writing by monolingual speakers of Spanish on the other. The paper describes the two-pronged approach used in training translators at UTRGV in order to develop students’ natural bilingualism into professional writing skills in both Spanish and English.

This study seeks to investigate EFL students’ attitudes toward the use of translation in writing. Twelve students from Faculty of Language and Arts, English Education Program, Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana, Indonesian participated in this study by doing a semi-structured interview.
