Embarking on a helicopter ride over Edinburgh, Scotland’s storied capital, is to weave through centuries of history, architecture, and unparalleled natural beauty from an extraordinary vantage point. This city, with its dramatic setting across rocky hills overlooking the sea, presents a tapestry of old and new—a blend that captivates from the skies as much as it does from the cobbled streets below.

As the helicopter lifts off and Edinburgh unfolds beneath you, the city’s iconic skyline comes into view, dominated by the imposing Edinburgh Castle . Perched atop an ancient volcano, the castle is a sentinel watching over the city, its walls and towers narrating Scotland’s tumultuous history. From this aerial perspective, the strategic importance of its location, commanding views over land and sea, becomes strikingly clear, offering a glimpse into the past when kings and queens roamed its halls.

Beyond the castle, the historic Royal Mile stretches down the spine of the Old Town, leading towards the Palace of Holyroodhouse , the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. This ancient thoroughfare, lined with medieval tenements and historic landmarks, tells the story of Edinburgh’s past, each stone and spire a chapter in the city’s narrative. Viewing the Royal Mile from above provides a unique appreciation for its layout, designed to fit the narrow ridge leading down from the castle, showcasing the city’s adaptation to its rugged landscape.

The helicopter ride also offers panoramic views of the New Town, a masterpiece of urban planning and a testament to the city’s Enlightenment era. The geometric precision of its streets, elegant Georgian townhouses, and lush gardens contrast with the organic sprawl of the Old Town, illustrating Edinburgh’s architectural evolution. From the air, the harmony between the Old and New Towns, separated by the verdant Princes Street Gardens , is a beautiful testament to the city’s ability to balance its heritage with progress.

Helicopter Tour over Edinburgh in Scotland

Beyond the city’s architectural wonders, the helicopter tour reveals the natural beauty that surrounds Edinburgh. The extinct volcano Arthur’s Seat rises from Holyrood Park, a rugged reminder of the city’s ancient geological past. The view from above captures the majesty of this natural landmark, offering a moment of reflection on the forces that shaped this landscape millions of years ago.

The flight might also take passengers over the Firth of Forth , where the impressive engineering of the Forth Bridges can be admired. The three bridges, each from a different century, span the estuary with grace and might, connecting Edinburgh with the Kingdom of Fife. The contrast between the Victorian Forth Bridge, the 20th-century Forth Road Bridge, and the modern Queensferry Crossing is a visual narrative of Scotland’s engineering prowess and its embrace of the future.

Moreover, a helicopter ride over Edinburgh allows for an appreciation of the city’s setting within the Lothians, bordered by the rolling Pentland Hills to the south and the tranquil waters of the Firth of Forth to the north. This juxtaposition of city and nature, of historical depth and the breath of the landscape, highlights the unique character of Edinburgh.

In conclusion, taking to the skies for a helicopter tour over Edinburgh is an unforgettable experience that melds the thrill of flight with a profound connection to Scotland’s capital. It offers not just breathtaking views but also a deeper understanding and appreciation for the city’s rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. Whether it’s the ancient majesty of Edinburgh Castle, the elegant geometry of the New Town, the wild beauty of Arthur’s Seat, or the engineering marvel of the Forth Bridges, the city reveals its secrets to those who venture above, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who see it from this remarkable perspective.

Edinburgh Helicopter Tours

Any company offering Edinburgh helicopter tours will specialise in creating a unique and unforgettable experience for their customers and showcase the beautiful landscapes of Scotland.

Generally, the point of departure will be Edinburgh Airport, where there is a dedicated helipad, and they may offer a variety of tours such as City tour, Coast and Castle tour, Golfers tour, and many more. Each tour typically lasts around 20-30 minutes, but longer tours are also available.

The helicopters will be one of those that are well-suited for sightseeing and touring, such as the single-engine Robinson R22 or R44, or a Eurocopter AS 350 , or a JetRanger. These aircraft are safe, reliable and comfortable, and they can accommodate between 3 to 6 passengers.

It’s worth noting that availability and prices for the tour might vary depending on the season, the tour chosen and the weather conditions. It’s recommended to check their website or contact the company directly for the most up-to-date information on prices, availability, and tour itinerary.

Where is Edinburgh Airport and how can I reach it by road or public transport?

Edinburgh Airport (IATA code: EDI) is located approximately 8 miles west of the city centre of Edinburgh, Scotland. It’s easily accessible by road or public transport.

By Road: Edinburgh airport is connected to the city centre and other areas of the city by the A8 and M8 motorways. The airport has multiple car parks available for short-term and long-term parking. Additionally, there is also a shuttle bus service for customers who park off-site.

By Public Transport: There is a regular bus service (Airport Express 100) operated by Lothian Buses which departs from St Andrew Square in the city centre and runs to the airport every 10-15 minutes . Additionally, the tram service from the city centre to the airport also runs frequently. Edinburgh Trams connect the airport to Edinburgh city centre in around 30 minutes and stop at various points along the way.

Taxi and ride-hailing services like Uber, or other ride-sharing services, are also available for transportation to and from the airport.

Cumbernauld Airport

Your Edinburgh helicopter flight may also start at this aerodrome.

Cumbernauld Airport, also known as Cumbernauld Aerodrome, is a small general aviation airport located in Cumbernauld, about 16 miles east of Glasgow.  It serves the local community with a variety of aviation services such as flight training, helicopter charter, aircraft maintenance and repair, and has a small number of private aircraft based there.

The airport has a single asphalt runway, which is around 1000 metres long, and it is equipped with basic facilities like Fuel facilities, lighting system, and some hangars. It is also used by emergency services and local businesses that require air transportation.

What to wear

While the interior of a helicopter is comfortable, you will be crossing an airfield apron to reach it so it’s worth dressing for the weather outside.   Here are some general guidelines for what to wear during each season:

Spring : During a Scottish spring, the weather can be unpredictable, with a mix of cool and warm temperatures. It’s a good idea to wear layers, such as a lightweight sweater or long-sleeved shirt, a light jacket, and a scarf or light scarf, so that you can easily adjust to the changing temperatures.

Summer : During the summer, it can be quite warm (but it’s not guaranteed), especially inside the helicopter, where the air conditioning might not be very strong. It’s best to wear lightweight, breathable clothing, such as shorts, t-shirts, and a light hat or sunglasses. Keep in mind that the temperature could be much cooler at altitude, and a light jacket or sweater is recommended.

Autumn : In autumn, the weather can be cool and crisp, so it’s best to wear layers, such as a sweater or long-sleeved shirt, a jacket or fleece, and a hat or scarf, to keep warm.

Winter : Scottish winters can be quite cold, so it’s important to dress warmly, in layers. Wear warm clothes such as thermal pants, sweater, and jacket, with a thick scarf and gloves. It’s also important to wear a warm hat or earmuffs to protect your head and ears from the cold.

Overall, I suggest wearing clothes that are comfortable, easy to move in, and nonrestrictive, as well as closed-toe shoes. Also, always keep in mind that, even in the summer, it is much colder at altitude and the temperature inside the helicopter might be lower than the one outside.

How long does an 18 or 25 mile helicopter ride take?

The duration of an 18-mile helicopter ride can vary depending on several factors such as the type of helicopter, the speed of the aircraft, and the weather conditions.

In general, most helicopters can travel at a speed of around 110 to 130 miles per hour (around 180-210 km/h). However, when it comes to sightseeing and touring, the speed will be slower to allow time for passengers to take in the sights and take photos. Also, due to safety reasons, the helicopter might fly at a lower altitude, and a bit slower, to avoid turbulence and ensure a smooth flight.

Based on those general assumptions, an 18-mile (about 30 kilometres) helicopter ride would typically take around 10 to 15 minutes, but again it could vary depending on specific factors. It’s best to check with the tour operator for the most accurate information about the duration of the tour you’re interested in.

Likewise, the duration of a 25-mile helicopter ride will depend on the same variables. A 25-mile (around 40 kilometres) helicopter ride would typically take around 15 to 20 minutes.

Is a short helicopter ride worth the expense?

Is a round of golf worth the expense?  A SCUBA dive?  Whether or not a short helicopter ride is worth the expense is a subjective matter and can vary depending on the individual and their personal preferences. However, here are some factors that might help you make your decision:

  • Scenery: Taking a helicopter ride allows you to see the sights and landscapes of a region in a unique and breathtaking way that is not possible from the ground. For many people, the experience of flying over stunning natural or urban landscapes is well worth the expense.
  • Convenience: Depending on the location, a helicopter ride can be a faster and more convenient way to travel compared to other forms of transportation. It can allow you to cover a lot of ground quickly, which is particularly useful for people with limited time or mobility.
  • Safety: Helicopters are considered to be safe aircrafts, and modern helicopters are equipped with many advanced safety systems.
  • Flexibility: Many helicopter tour operators offer flexible flight times and pick-up/drop-off options. Which can be more convenient for you, than sticking to a scheduled transport option.
  • Memorable Experience: A helicopter ride can be a memorable and exciting experience, many people find the sensation of flying in a helicopter to be thrilling, and they enjoy the views and the unique experience of being up in the air.

You should also consider if you have any other expenses that you have to cover and if this is something you can afford. You may also want to do a comparison of prices from different operators, as although prices don’t vary much, the extras they lay on may be different.

Taylor Swift Congratulates Fans Who Got Engaged in the ‘Sunlight’ at Edinburgh ‘Eras Tour’ Show

Taylor Swift Congratulates Fans Who Got Engaged in the ‘Sunlight’ at Edinburgh ‘Eras Tour’ Show

In the middle of Taylor Swift ’s Friday, June 7, concert performance of “Cardigan,” two fans got engaged — and the pop star witnessed it firsthand.

“I love performing this entire show in the sunlight because I’m pretty sure I saw somebody get engaged over here,” Swift, 34, said during her Edinburgh concert , gesturing to a fan in the floor section who popped the question to her girlfriend. “Did it happen? Yes!”

She continued, “You have no idea [how excited I am]. I never get to see that, because it’s, like, dark usually at night, but it’s not right now. So, congratulations, wow! I just saw that whole thing. Man, that’s amazing.”

Swift kicked off her Eras Tour in March 2023 with many fans choosing to ask their partners to marry them mid-show. Some concertgoers have opted to get down on one knee during “Love Story” or “Champagne Problems” as Swift reached the specific lyrics about engagements or weddings.

“Thanks for doing that at my concert,” she quipped on Friday. “That’s a big moment. Huge!”

Friday was Swift’s first of three Eras Tour shows in Scotland , where she kept gushing about the crowds having “fun” throughout the evening. To match their energy, she chose surprise song mash-ups that she specifically thought they would enjoy hearing live. On guitar, Swift performed a medley of “Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve” and “I Know Places” with an extended interlude between verses.

“She’s right there. I’m just gonna keep playing until somebody helps them, I’m gonna be singing this song,” Swift said, looking towards security officials to help another attendee in need of assistance. “Just let me know. I can do this all night.”

After the security guard eventually found the fan in question, Swift continued on with the show as planned. Her next surprise song was a mash-up of “Tis the Damn Season” and “Daylight.”

Breaking Down All of Taylor Swifts Eras Tour Surprise Song Mash Ups and What They Could Mean

Related: A Guide to Taylor Swift's 'Eras Tour' Surprise Song Mash-Ups

Swift has two more concerts at the Scottish Gas Murrayfield Stadium on Saturday, June 8, and Sunday, June 9, to special celebrity fan excitement.

“We’re gonna go see Taylor Swift play in Scotland. I think most of the cast is going,” Sam Heughan said of the Outlander stars in an Instagram video posted earlier this week . “She obviously doesn’t know this, but when she comes to Scotland and she sees me in the audience, she’s gonna forget all about … him and fall for a man in a ginger wig. How could she resist? She’s gonna shake him off and take me out instead. I’m really excited.”

While Heughan, 44, did not mention Swift’s boyfriend by name, she has been dating Travis Kelce since summer 2023. Kelce, 34, frequently supports Swift at her Eras shows in between his NFL and other work commitments.

Ready for it? Taylor Swift fans mobilise for UK Eras Tour

It's T minus one day until Taylor Swift brings her worldwide Eras Tour to the UK.

But fans are already building up to the first gig on Friday.

The star kicks off three nights at Murrayfield stadium in Edinburgh and the city is already in full Swift mode.

Fans gathered at the stadium from the early hours on Wednesday to buy their tour merchandise ahead of the gigs.

Ailsa Cameron, 32, bagged hers and shared her luck with other fans on X.

"Merch secured," she said. "For anyone thinking of heading to Murrayfield today, I got there at 12:15 and there was literally no queue!"

She told BBC Scotland News: "I had my eye on a couple of things so was really happy to get them.

"I bought two sweatshirts. And I had to get the Edinburgh Eras Tour poster too.

"I’m so excited for the gig, I still can't believe Taylor is actually playing Edinburgh."

Caitlin Bartram, 19, from Seaham, has been a fan of Taylor Swift since she was four and the Fearless album had just been released.

She is one of almost 73,000 fans who will fill the Scottish Rugby home ground each night.

She said: “There are no words, it’s like Christmas, I can’t sleep because I'm so excited.”

Like many fans, Caitlin has thought hard about her outfit for the night. After seeing creative designs made by other fans online, she decided to recreate a bodysuit that Taylor wears during her performance.

“It does take a lot of patience," she said. "I can’t even fathom the amount of time that I’ve spent painstakingly watching the Eras film, looking for photos on Pinterest, on Google images, zooming in on really fine details, trying to get everything to match perfectly.

"I marked out the symmetry, with fabric chalk, it’s a lot of measuring, there’s actually a lot of maths involved which did take a lot of time.”

Caitlin believes the process has brought her closer to the Taylor Swift community.

“She just inspires people to be their most authentic self, and I think with that it’s brought out people’s crafty side in a way. This outfit hasn’t been just a process for me, my whole family has been involved in it, that’s the sense of community that Taylor has brought with all the Swifties.”

Julia Baldwin, 21, is a student in her last year at Edinburgh University.

Originally from a small town in the US, she’s never had the chance to see Taylor Swift despite being a fan since she was a young girl.

When it was announced the superstar was going to perform for three nights in Edinburgh, Julia took on three part time jobs to save enough money for the tickets.

She has been working at a wedding venue, for an online data company, and early morning shifts at Edinburgh airport.

She said: “I remember listening to her music on the bus at 02:00 on my way to my job at the airport every day and being like 'this is what I’m doing it for', so I can hear these songs live.

Julia has spent £1,300 on tickets for all three nights at Murrayfield. She wanted to make sure she was able to soak up every moment of the concerts.

“A lot of people have been reporting having concert amnesia, where they haven’t been remembering the show after they’ve gone home. It’s something I wanted to remember so I figured that if I go multiple times then by night three, I’ll be a bit more mellowed and will remember things.”

Julia has a recurring ankle injury and has been so worried about being able to dance her way through the gigs that she has taken preventative action.

"I spoke to the GP and I am going to start physiotherapy so I can dance for four hours straight at the shows."

She has crocheted a special Taylor Swift blanket for the gig.

"Each row is a song and each colour represents an album."

Annie Smith, of Lanark, has decorated her house alongside her two daughters for Lanimers Day, a local tradition.

On 6 June, the town's schoolchildren parade in costumes through the streets with decorated vehicles and music bands.

A Lanimer Queen and her Court are selected from local schools and those involved in the "Court" decorate their house in a theme that means something to them.

Annie and her family took a modern twist on the tradition.

"We are huge Swifties, so it was never going to be anything else!

"We've spent months designing and building it all and then a lot of hours this week working to save it from the weather!" said Annie.

The family started work on it in January.

Annie's dad, who is 77, helped with the building and was drilling and linking the CDs for weeks.

"It's a big hit with local Swifties and we're loving it too. We're going to see Taylor on Saturday and it will be my 12-year-old daughter's first concert.

"We are VERY excited!"

Scots zoo names two newborn endangered monkeys after Taylor Swift

Edinburgh Zoo welcomed the tiny cotton-top tamarins last week and have now named them after the All Too Well singer.

Edinburgh Zoo has named two newborn monkeys after Taylor Swift ahead of the singer’s three sold-out shows in the capital.

The tiny cotton-top tamarins, which are extremely endangered, were born on June 4 to first-time mum Elf and dad Zecca.

In celebration of Swift bringing her Eras tour to Murrayfield this weekend, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland decided to name the babies after the star.

One of the tamarins will be named Taylor while its sibling will be called Swift.

Lorna Hughes, primate team leader at Edinburgh Zoo, said: “It is incredibly exciting to welcome our newborn cotton-top tamarin twins, Taylor and Swift.

“Unfortunately, the species is one of the most endangered primates in the world due to extensive habitat loss, so this birth is really special.

“Both parents will take turns caring for the youngsters, carrying them on their back for the first few months of their lives before they become more independent at around five months old.”

Edinburgh Zoo said it is offering Taylor Swift The Eras Tour attendees 25% off zoo admission tickets from Friday until Sunday. More information is available at edinburghzoo.org.uk/taylor-swift
