Cozy and Colorful Country Cottage Home Tour

Hello I’m Courtney, and I want to start with a huge thanks to Shannon for inviting me to share some pictures of our home with you today. Shannon has shown me so much support (and so many laughs!) in her comments and shares through the years and she truly is one of the kindest people in all of Blogland/Instagram. Today, I am here to share some pictures of our home all decked out for Spring.

I enjoy decorating for all the seasons, but i really went all out for spring this year. it was a long and cold winter here in nj where i live with my husband (a recently retired police officer and all around handyman), our 3 sons (ages 20, 17 and 13) and two golden retrievers., it’s where my blog name “ golden boys and me” comes from. i was so anxious for the warmer weather to arrive that i began decorating my home despite the snow on the ground to help coax the warmer weather into arriving soon. so far, i’m happy to report, it’s working maybe more in lifting my spirits than anything else, but i’ll gladly take that., our kitchen is the heart of our home and where most of the family living takes place – the real stuff of life. when we purchased our home 12 years ago, it was a fixer upper split level in a great location that was last updated in the 1980’s. we began to make it our family home room by room. it has been a true labor of love we added the creamy white cabinets about 10 years ago. the kitchen island was originally a darker walnut color that we recently updated with a few coats of oval room blue paint by farrow and ball. it changed the entire look of our kitchen., we enjoy sharing tutorials on  golden boys and me  that share how we completed small projects to personalize our kitchen to give it a more custom look for less., a few of those projects include: , diy pot rack, diy range hood mantel, painted kitchen island, we removed the walls that separated our kitchen from the dining and living rooms and this open floor plan suits our family much better., i dream of living in an older home that is full of character someday. but, in the meantime, we have made the best of what we have., there isn’t much inherent charm that comes with a split level house built in the 1950s, but we’ve done our best to add some of our own with details like built-in bookshelves and the faux fireplace in our living room.,  next, let’s head down the stairs to our front entryway and family room., our family room is just through the french doors right off the entryway. this room has a cozier feel thanks to the stone fireplace and more traditional decor., we also carved out a bit of space for a small mudroom. with three growing boys, that was a great decision. i have fun adding some seasonal decor but, in an effort to keep it real, if you visited my home today, you would see the mudroom jam packed with shoes, book bags and sports equipment.  i’ve also really been enjoying infusing my home with more and more color lately, before you go, i want to take you all the way upstairs to our master bathroom., this room was the $7k diy project that actually sparked my little blog journey six years ago when i shared all of the sources for this space (you can find that post  here ). we removed a wall to enlarge the previously very small bathroom and this has become my own private retreat. i recently painted the vanity and am loving the vibrancy and life it has added to our bathroom., finally, here’s one more bit of charm that we added with a couple of old bookshelves from a dated wall unit that we used to flank an upper kitchen cabinet to create a window seat in our bedroom., i’m a huge fan of looking around at what you’ve got to see how you can make it work in a new and unique way., i hope you enjoyed this peek into our home. i enjoy sharing pictures on  instagram  and love how that platform allows us to easily connect and interact so i’d love if you’d join me there and/or on my blog thanks again for having me, shannon.

PS: Shannon here… Hi friends! I had such a strong feeling you guys would just love Courtney’s home. It’s sooo warm and inviting and it makes me feel welcome and wrapped up in cozy!! While there is nothing at all wrong with it, the trend seems to be leaning towards a more sparse approach to decorating, and while that might be right for some, I wanted to embrace what a well curated and collected home can make some of us feel. I absolutely love her rich colors, bits of vintage flair and the FEEL I get when I look at her home! I thought you might too. Big hugs! I’ll be catching up with you all very soon and let you know what’s going on with me. xoxo – Shan

Courtney, LOVE your home,, and I’m loving the turquoise bathroom vanity you painted. I’m wanting to do something similar in my bathroom. What color did you paint the vanity?

Hi Lauren! If you follow the link to Courtney’s blog or social channels, I’m sure she would help you out with that question 🙂

Amazing! It’s hard to believe this is a real house. Looks perfectly staged 😛 Beautiful fireclay farmhouse sink in the kitchen. They have been our best sellers. With kitchens like this, it’s easy to see why!

This has been pinned to our inspiration board.

Thanks again.

What a beautiful home! I agree, I love modern design, but my heart leans towards a warm, well curated and though fully decorated decor. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thrifty French Country Cottage Style Home Tour

If you enjoy gleaning ideas from the French country cottage style, then this home tour done on a budget will give you inspiration with loads of vintage charm!

French Country Cottage Style Home Tour

Welcome in to the home of Desiree, who graciously shares her french country cottage style home done on a budget with us today! I just recently got to know Desiree on Instagram and was immediately smitten with her use of upcycling, vintage pieces incorporated with new and softly muted decor. Find her on Instagram HERE  if you are on that platform.

shabby chic cottage garden

Like me, Desiree lives in Florida and her colors both inside and out reflect the coastal lifestyle. A snippet of her Orlando garden above is a treat! As soon as you enter her home, you see her love of vintage charm with flea market finds and architectural pieces throughout. Her budget was tight and she’s been able to do lots of projects on a dime, so let’s see what she has shared!

french country cottage style home tour

Desiree is a busy wife and mom to four young children. She has a of love photography, refinishing furniture, crafting, DIY’s and really anything creative! She has a blog filled with her pursuits and you’ll find that here – Camelot Art Creations .

Like so many of us, she loves to mix things up and move pieces around. She shared that her home was featured in the 2019 Spring issue of American Farmhouse Style, making the cover! It will also be featured this year, 2020 in Cottages and Bungalows Christmas issue. Her home is a mix, and she has a love of french country cottage style mixed with vintage, primitive, farmhouse and more.

Desiree shares that they purchased this 4 bedroom, 3 bath home in 2016, 2 1/2 weeks before the birth of their 4th child. “Our prior home was a townhouse and we had just outgrown it. When we started looking for a home to purchase, this one was out of our price range. I had actually found it by driving through one of my favorite neighborhoods. There was just something about the large corner lot & shaded front yard from the oak tree.”

french country cottage style dining room

“After looking at two homes in our price range, I asked our realtor to set up a showing of this home. It had been on the market for 9 months, everything in this neighborhood sells within two months! I really felt that God was telling me that this is the home for your family! The listing photos were a little scary, but I can always see past flaws. Most of it was just bright paint colors. After looking at the home, I knew it was perfect! A pool for the kids, large yard, open family room into the kitchen & a split floor plan, so our daughter has her own private space when she’s older with three older brothers. The elementary school is right across the street and a good public school system. We made an offer that was in our price range and it was accepted!”

Desiree is “in the know” having grown up with parents that had a construction business. “I was familiar with remodels and have always had a love for home design. My parents always bought the ugliest house, in the best neighborhoods and flipped them.”

“The first thing that we did, was paint all of the main living areas in Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray. I kind of wish I went with white walls now. My style has really changed since moving in. Leaning more to the French country, cottage style than farmhouse style.”

country cottage tour

“I’ve always loved antiques and the only store bought pieces in our home are our IKEA sofas. Everything else has been curated over time from Craigslist, garage sales, FB marketplace & flea markets. I love mixing in styles like primitive, victorian, French country & cottage. Nothing cost over $70 and I’m definitely a bargain shopper. My favorite find is our dining room table for $60. The natural wood and French legs had me smitten!”

“After living with a ugly kitchen for a year, I painted the cabinets. I’ve always dreamed of a all white kitchen, but with 4 kids I just didn’t think painting the lower cabinets in white was a good idea. We had a 5 gallon bucket of gray paint leftover from another project, so I decided to use that to save money. It’s Behr Gray Area. So glad we went this way because it does hide a lot of the kids messes.”

country cottage tour

“We added hardware, covered the countertops in marble vinyl, added open shelves and recently did a peel and stick backsplash, removed the microwave and raised the upper cabinet above the stove to give a more custom look.”

“Everything probably only cost under $500. Some materials were gifted. I have to say that this is my favorite project because of how much better it made the home look.”

Master Bedroom:

“Wall color is Behr Falling Snow. I love how light and airy our bedroom is! I painted the secretary’s desk in Fusion mineral paint, Stirling. Picked that up for $25 at a flea market! I like mixing furniture in a bedroom instead of everything matching, like a tea cart for a nightstand.”

french country cottage style bedroom

Daughters Bedroom:

“I love her layered gallery wall that we did…well maybe more so me. My husband didn’t care for the layered look.”

Boys Bathroom:

“We added board and batten, did a peel and stick floor tile. Painted the cabinet and walls in Behr Ultra Pure White. the B&B is the Behr Gray Area again, same as the kitchen since we had the paint. This little update made a huge difference for under $100!”

Janet, thank you so much for sharing our home on your gorgeous blog! So flattered! I’ve been a fan of yours for many years & you’ve shared so many gorgeous homes!!

Very impressive! Lovely home.

Desiree is so talented! What a beautiful, creative home. Thanks Janet for bringing it to us. It went well with my morning coffee.

Noticed at least three sets of chippy white corbels around Desiree’s lovely home — love them! Also the dresser in her daughter’s bedroom –very vintage and sweet. This lady has fabulous taste!

Thanks for sharing Desiree’s home today. I so enjoyed it. The touches of blues, whites and gray’s is so pretty. We have agreeable gray as well on our walls and it does come off as a very very light shade of gray and gives the white trim something to pop off of without being too much. Peel and stick flooring? I’m seeing this everywhere and would love to see how it holds up. I subscribed to the Instagram!

Thanks for stopping by with a comment Lori! I’m not sure about the durability of peel and stick, but I would think it’s more of a temporary fix.

What a lovely home. Envious. I live on a wooded site and my house is so dark compared to the light airiness of Desiree’s!

Hopefully you can grab some ideas from posts like these Kathy! xo

Congrats on your new home its lovely, thank you for sharing.

Desiree has a lovely home Marilyn and glad that you enjoyed the tour!

We love this home too!

As for the holidays here, it was nothing sort of magical and a beautiful flow throughout the rooms. The pears and oranges add a bit of old world nostalgia to the garlands a perfect touch to a fruitful home.

Our 30 Best House Plans For Cottage-Lovers

country cottage tour

When we see the quaint cross-gables, steeply pitched roofs, smooth arched doorways, or storybook touches of a cottage, we can't help but let out a wistful sigh. These smaller homes with just a handful of bedrooms come in all sorts of architectural styles, but the coziness oozes from every nook and cranny, inside and out.

And while we feature every house style under the sun in our handy arsenal of Southern Living House Plans , it seems that none might be more treasured than the cottage. These charming cottages are just hard not to love, so we gathered some of our best-selling house plans that are perfect for any cottage-lover. Whether you're in the market or you just want to relish in the fairytale appeal, these cottages—both traditional and modern—are certain to leave you breathless.

Randolph Cottage, Plan #1861

This charming cottage lives bigger than its sweet size with an open floor plan. It has a Williamsburg-meets-New England look we just love. The upstairs TV room gives the second-story inhabitants a secluded place to hang out, and a porch is tucked around the side of the house off the dining room.

The Details:

  • 3 bedrooms and 2 ½ baths
  • 1,800 square feet

Cloudland Cottage, Plan #1894

Life at this charming cabin in Chickamauga, Georgia, centers around one big living room and a nearly 200-square-foot back porch. It was designed by architect  Durham Crout with long and cozy family weekends—plus plenty of quality time spent together—in mind.

  • 2 bedrooms and 2 baths
  • 1,200 square feet

Cottage Revival, Plan #1946

This L-shaped cottage has a lived-in, snug vibe. The one-story plan offers a modern cottage approach to more traditional styles. It has the entry from the side porch, and it places the great room at the back of the home, near the outdoor back deck.

  • 4 bedrooms and 2 baths
  • 1,929 square feet

River Place Cottage, Plan #1959

This traditional Southern coastal-style cottage has plenty of classic charm. It features a large open layout with a living-dining space that's flanked on two sides by the 470-square-foot front porch and an additional side screened porch (there's a third porch off the back of the house, too), making it ideal for family gatherings.

  • 2,420 square feet

Farmdale Cottage, Plan #1870

This country-style cottage gives a warm welcome with its centered, elevated front door. Post-and-beam ceilings in the kitchen and brick floors in the light-filled dining room give rustic charm.

  • 3 bedrooms and 3 baths
  • 2,057 square feet

Covington Cottage, Plan #1010

With just over 1,900 square feet of living space, this cozy cottage lives big with an open, one-level floor plan and spacious interiors. The home blends traditional elements and comfortable styling for a plan that makes a perfect place for the whole family to call "home."

  • 3 bedrooms and 2 baths
  • 1,941 square feet

Sugarberry Cottage, Plan #1648

This compact plan has a family-friendly layout with a downstairs primary, a cozy fireplace, and two large upstairs bedrooms. Two covered porches and a screened porch provide plenty of outdoor living space for spreading out.

  • 1,679 square feet

Celebration Cottage, Plan #1891

This stunning Alabama home with modern detail was Southern Living 's 2016 Idea House , located in our hometown of Birmingham. The open, spacious interior perfectly complements the impressively large wraparound porch that makes you want to stay awhile.

  • 4 to 5 bedrooms and 4 ½ baths
  • 4,037 square feet

Cottage Of The Year, Plan #593

Here's a warm and inviting year-round retreat, with plenty of space for friends and family to relax both together and separately in their own spaces. The versatile plan includes a guest cottage set off the back of the house, while the primary bedroom is attached by a vestibule.

  • 4 bedrooms and 3 ½ baths
  • 2,718 square feet

Seale Court, Plan #1910

This simple vernacular cottage features a classic gabled ell form seen on many Southern cottages. Its well-placed front door (with a pop of color) draws your eye to the inviting front porch. A flex room could be converted into a fourth bedroom or used as a study, as needed.

  • 3 to 4 bedrooms and 4 baths
  • 2,755 square feet

Aiken Street, Plan #1807

This home has a relaxed attitude, thanks to the simple living spaces and natural materials. A metal roof and tall operable shutters lend a Lowcountry feel to this classic cottage with a vintage twist. See how a designer redecorated this coastal retreat .

  • 4 bedrooms and 4 ½ baths
  • 2,233 square feet

Wildmere Cottage, Plan #1110

The living room, dining room, and kitchen flow seamlessly together in this farmhouse-style cottage that's perfect for a family. A functionally compact, but charming mudroom opens to a cozy screened porch at the back of the home.

  • 3 bedrooms and 3 ½ baths
  • 2,345 square feet

St. George Cottage, Plan #1906

This quaint coastal cottage features a well-organized layout that makes the most of its compact square footage. The design ensures abundant natural light throughout the interiors, while a fireplace and dual-door access to a 417-square-foot back porch are major standouts in the communal areas of the house.

  • 1,610 square feet

Winonna Park, Plan #503

This cottage has all of the features of a larger home in a manageable size. It's all about the open spaces in this home, including an upper-floor loft area that looks down to the main floor. A see-through fireplace separates the living and dining rooms, while a wall of windows in the living room lets in plenty of natural light.

  • 2 to 3 bedrooms and 2 baths
  • 1,872 square feet

Nautical Cottage, Plan #224

The cedar shakes siding and Nantucket star design porch detailing add to the New England feel of this relaxed cottage. Inspired by small summer cottages along the East Coast, architect Scott Ziegler's plan is adaptable to climate and location.

Frequently Asked Questions

The word "cottage" has been around for centuries, since medieval English farmers, called cotters, built modest thatched-roof houses for themselves. For a long time, these English cottages were associated with the countryside. However, over the years, thanks to the term's usage by different cultures and communities, "cottage" has come to describe a category of house rather than one specific architectural style.

Cottages come in many different styles. However, some of the more common features include asymmetrical architecture, steep gable rooflines, a decorative arched entryway, an oversized chimney, and Craftsman-style finishes like window boxes, cobblestone walkways, and casement windows.

Generally, cottages are on the smaller side—about 1,000 to 1,200 square feet. Although, the size can skew larger or smaller depending on the house plan. These homes often only have two or three bedrooms and one or two bathrooms. In the South, they'll also frequently have some sort of porch.

Top It With a Quilt

homeowners built the wall behind the headboard using wood salvaged from other parts of the house and there is a quilt on the bed

Quilts harken back to earlier days of country life and still add just the right happy pop of color and pattern to a bedroom (or any room for that matter). Use them as a bedspread, drape them over the back of a couch, or stack them up to use on frigid days. This double wedding ring quilt sewn by the owner's grandmother, and books, family photos, and other treasured finds round out the collected look in the room.

Display a Collection

lake cabin living room with rattan sofa and display of vintage seascapes

There’s no more meaningful decor than a personally curated collection, so show it off! These amateur seascape paintings, most found for $10-$15 at flea markets, make for a cohesive (and affordable!) collection above the fireplace and sofa. “They reminded me of something my grandma would have had, and I built everything else around them,” homeowner Abby Albers says. “I love that they don’t match anything.”

Expose Wood Beams

cottage kitchen with low ceilings and wood beams, white tile backsplash, and green cabinets

If you discover wood beams under that drop ceiling, let them shine! They pair well with walls painted white or, in the case of this rustic Cape Cod cottage kitchen, a white zellige tile backsplash.

Bring On the Ruffles

a living room with a fireplace, floral chair, red checked sofa

Welcome multiple patterned textiles to your living room. Here, a wildflower chintz upholstered armchair adds a feminine touch to this family room and makes a fun juxtaposition to the red buffalo check-covered sofa.

Hold On To Passed-Down Pieces

Cottages get their soul from passed-down furniture and collections, but you can also seek them out to start your own set to pass down like this vintage spongeware, which dates from the 1950s to the 1980s. To add another antique to the mix, they are nested together on an old rolling shoe display.

Slipcovers add a relaxed, cottage feel to any living room. In this living room, the white cotton duck slipcovered pieces pair perfectly with flea-market-find side tables and a coffee table that was covered in burlap and painted. Tip: As in this room, keep the fit tight and choose a box-pleat skirt for a tidy—not sloppy—look.

Install Beadboard Panelling

Cozy up a mudroom (or almost any other space) with the texture in beadboard. Better yet, use it as wainscotting and paint it one color and the wall above another. This California cottage’s space also boasts a 1930s factory stool, which retains its original green paint, while the iron hooks on the coatrack swivel from side to side.

Pick Furniture With Patina

Mismatching painted pieces furniture brings a cozy warmth to a home. Here, in this Arkansas dining room, a pale sage green cupboard may seem an unlikely pairing with the chippy turquoise farmhouse table, but thanks to white walls, natural wood chairs, and reclaimed wood that boasts a little of each color, the result is one-of-a-kind charm.

Source Wicker, New or Old

Wicker is quintessentially cottagecore, whether it sits indoors or out. This wicker patio set was a hand-me-down from the homeowner’s friend, and another pal sewed the love seat's cushion and pillow.

Pile Pattern on Pattern

In this bedroom by the color-loving Madcap Cottage design duo, a romantic floral wallpaper is paired with custom floral shams and a patchwork quilt. Real home: explore a restored 17th-century country cottage

Realising their dream of rural living, the Lovatts fell for a picturesque thatched cottage, transforming it into an idyllic family home brimming with relaxed country charm

English country cottage sitting room with beams

Do you dream of living in a classic English country cottage? Prepare to swoon as they don't come more adorable than this restored chocolate-box thatch. Looking to start a new life in the Suffolk countryside with their young family, Jamie and Rebecca Lovatt knew as soon as they set foot through the door of this 17th-century home that the cottage it felt like home and set about making it their own.

To tour more period homes to inspire your project visit our hub page .

Owners  Rebecca and Jamie Lovatt live here with their two children Freddie, ten, and Verity, eight. Rebecca is a lifestyle blogger at My English Country Cottage covering country interiors, gardening, Aga recipes and interior design, and Jamie is managing director of commercial joinery manufacturer and contractor WJL

Property  A three-bedroom 17th-century thatched cottage, on the Suffolk/Essex/Cambridgeshire border

What they did   A bespoke timber kitchen was fitted and the couple redecorated throughout. They also converted a stable block into guest accommodation and a creative room for Rebecca

When it comes to finding, ‘the one’, no matter how well a property fits your brief, for many of us it all rests on a feeling; something that Rebecca Lovatt knows all too well after discovering her dream home in rural Cambridgeshire.

‘My mother-in-law says it’s like walking in and getting a huge hug,’ she says. It was this same comforting feeling that won over Rebecca and husband Jamie on their first viewing in 2013. ‘We must have seen about 40 properties, but this was the only one that we fell in love with,’ she says. ‘A listed thatch was certainly not what we set out to buy, but when you fall in love with something, you just take it on don’t you?’

Lovatt thatched cottage exterior hollyhocks

Lined with hollyhocks, the cottage looks like a picture postcard during the summer months

While it may not have been what they originally envisioned, Rebecca and Jamie were looking for an older property, having previously sampled the delights of period living in a canalside cottage in Cheshire. ‘We knew that older homes demand a lot of upkeep,’ says Rebecca, ‘so we said, let’s not go listed, let’s not go thatched, let’s not go really old…’ she laughs. ‘But our hearts ruled our heads.’

Lovatt thatched cottage flowers front door

As well as its warm welcome, the Lovatts were drawn to the cottage’s uncharacteristically large rooms. ‘The ceiling height was amazing and it felt really spacious,’ says Rebecca. ‘I think it works well because there are two huge rooms downstairs which are perfect for a young family.’

Lovatt thatched cottage kitchen table with dresser

Wary of the problems that old properties can conceal, the couple had an extensive survey carried out, which confirmed that the property was structurally sound. As has been the fate of so many period properties, some years before it had been unsympathetically extended to the side and back as well as with a porch, hallway, tack room and at one point, a boiler room.

Lovatt thatched cottage kitchen table with beams

The handmade dining table was bought in Brighton over 20 years ago. Rebecca found the mismatched chairs from Greenwich market and Ebay and has painted them in Farrow & Ball’ s Mizzle, Pigeon and New White. The pine dresser was another Ebay find, which Rebecca has upcycled using Annie Sloan’s Château Grey and Old White Chalk paint to create a country feel

Luckily the previous owners had removed all the recent additions, meaning that the building was back to its original fabric when the Lovatts bought the house. ‘It was pretty much an empty shell,’ says Rebecca. ‘But hadn’t been lived in for a year and a half, so it looked neglected and needed us to come in and bring it back to life again.’

Lovatt thatched cottage kitchen aga

The rocking chair was given to Rebecca as a present on her 14th birthday; she loves to sit here and relax by the Aga. The handmade Pakistani Baluchi wool rug was bought from a retired Cambridge professor

Fortunately, the cottage had retained an array of prized period features, including original beams, floorboards and a large brick inglenook fireplace. While the windows are not original, they had been replaced with sympathetic timber frames. Besides a nasty kitchen unit, concrete floor and dated carpet in the bedroom, the house was pretty much a blank canvas ready for Rebecca to lend her effortless rural style. ‘I definitely wanted an English country home with lots of textures, fabrics, rugs, thick curtains and comfy, sink-in sofas.’

Lovatt thatched cottage flowers in sink

To create a kitchen with a quintessential cottage feel, bespoke wooden in-frame base cabinets were teamed with freestanding pieces, including a moveable island, plate rack and wicker storage baskets. Hanging by the window is a painting by Jamie’s late great-aunt and celebrated artist Muriel Pemberton, former member of the Royal Watercolour Society

First on the list was a classic handmade country kitchen. The couple chose a mix of in-frame base cabinets and freestanding units to create a relaxed look and versatile layout. Jamie’s company built the cabinets to their own design while Rebecca sourced secondhand units, including a dresser and island, which can easily be repositioned for entertaining.

Lovatt thatched cottage snug corner dresser

A classic striped sofa from Laura Ashley creates a cosy corner in the kitchen. On the wall hangs another Muriel Pemberton artwork

‘It’s somewhere people can gather with muddy boots and where kids can run around and bang into things without us having to worry,’ she says. ‘Yet it’s still a beautiful space where grown-ups can sit and enjoy an evening meal.’

Lovatt thatched cottage sitting room

The original brick inglenook fireplace fitted with a wood-burning stove provides the central focus in the living room. Rebecca opted for an understated, timeless feel by teaming traditional duck egg sofas from Sofa Workshop with an antique chair from Ebay and a handmade Persian tree of life rug. Curtains in Kate Forman’s Roses linen finish the English country feel

As keen hosts, the couple found one of the drawbacks of the property was having nowhere to accommodate friends and family, but they soon saw the opportunity to convert a stable block in the garden into guest accommodation comprising a double bedroom, bathroom and second bedroom, which also doubles as a creative room for Rebecca.

Lovatt thatched cottage cake and flowers

As the property is set in a Conservation Area and is Grade II listed, they knew planning permission would be needed, but happily the project was swiftly approved. ‘We showed them detailed plans, including the suppliers we intended to use,’ says Rebecca. ‘They could see that we loved the property and didn’t want to blight it in any way.’

Lovatt thatched cottage reading corner

Bespoke floor-to-ceiling bookshelves occupy the entire far wall of the living room complete with a built-in window seat, the perfect reading nook. ‘It was a tricky job for the joiner as he had to avoid touching any of the original plaster or beams,’ says Rebecca.

‘Trying to get it straight in a house where not one wall, beam or floor is level was a nightmare!’ The seat cushion is covered in Kate Forman fabric with scatter cushions from Susie Watson Designs . The floor lamp is from Original Homewares – a friend’s company which specialises in mid-century pieces

Indeed, rather than conceal its history, the pair have sought to embrace the property’s unique quirks, awkward angles, wonky floors, scrapes and even sways. Décor is kept simple with Farrow & Ball neutrals allowing the beautiful timber-frame structure to really sing, while wooden furniture and classic floral linens complete the English cottage look.

Lovatt thatched cottage bedroom with beams

Neutral walls keep the bedroom feeling light and airy while the Frank Hudson Cane weathered bed and curtains in Paris Rose linen by Cabbages & Roses create a vintage French feel. The floorboards are so uneven that Rebecca uses old books to level up the bed

‘In the bedroom we took up the carpet to reveal original wooden boards,’ says Rebecca. ‘They were wonky, covered in holes, and had nails sticking out, but we love them! When the wind blows at night you notice the house genuinely does move; it’s like being in a ship’s cabin. But it’s been here for 400 years, so it’s not going anywhere.’

Lovatt thatched cottage

Just a short walk from the front of the house, across the garden and a patio area, is a stable block that Rebecca and Jamie have converted into guest accommodation for friends and family

Like any country cottage it really shines in the summertime. Rebecca loves to throw open the French doors to the garden and host dinner parties on the patio, lounge in her handmade seating area, and pick the garden flowers, but admits there is still lots to do.

Lovatt thatched cottage pallet seating area

Jamie and Rebecca created the outdoor seating using old palettes and topped them with large bench cushions from Loaf and scatter cushions from Cabbages & Roses , Etsy and Ebay . The throw is from Ian Snow

Lovatt thatched cottage potting table

Rebecca loves to create garden displays on her potting bench and is always on the look out for vintage pots and garden tools

‘The garden is our next big project,’ she says. ‘At the moment it would get ruined by cricket balls, but I dream of having a little knot garden.’ Rebecca knows that one day the family will outgrow the property and toys with the idea of extending, but wonders in her heart if it’s right. ‘It’s a practical solution, but I can’t help feeling that as it’s so perfect we should keep it as it is, for another family to continue its story.’

As the stable block had no period features worth preserving, it gave Rebecca free rein to showcase her flair for creating country rustic interiors. The front door opens into a bright bedroom clad in whitewashed pine for a modern rustic feel and the space is paved throughout with reclaimed Charles Howey brick tiles from Lubelska . For a similar bed try the Wrought Iron & Brass Bed Company

Lovatt thatched cottage bathroom

Old meets new in the stylish stable block bathroom. While laid out as a contemporary wet room, Rebecca created a pretty and unique bathroom vanity unit by mounting a transferware basin from Ebay onto a wooden washstand. The tiles in the shower are Baked Tiles’ Tuscany range

Lovatt thatched cottage craft room dresser

The second bedroom in the stable block doubles as Rebecca’s creative room where she does a lot of her interiors work. The wardrobe is another Ebay find, painted in Annie Sloan’s French Linen . Rebecca found a quirky rattan lamp shade she liked on Ebay so created a pendant light using fittings from Creative Cables

Mill Lodge: A Colorful Cottage Escape for a Young Family

W hen Shirley Au purchased a little brick cottage in Sonning, a quaint village in the English countryside, she was initially going to transform it into a residential-style showroom for Another Country, the furniture company for which she serves as a director. But even after she pivoted to turning the former mill into a weekend home for her young family, she still wanted to prominently exhibit the brand’s contemporary pieces alongside charming prints and a whimsical palette of greens, reds, and blues.

So Shirley tapped London-based interior designer Jill Macnair, who was inspired by Kettle’s Yard and Charleston, two art museums set in iconic houses. “I wanted to bring into play that sort of ethos, but I knew the clients wouldn’t want it to be quite as busy or eclectic as either of those projects,” Jill explains. “We wanted to hit a warm minimalism feel. There’s pattern and quite a lot of color, but there’s not lots of stuff. It is such a small space, so each item had to be quite particular.”

Quaint Cottage in Moscow

Today we’re traveling to Moscow to see a quaint cottage with warm, minimalist style. You’ll find a lot of charming details throughout the house.

Quaint Cottage Home in Moscow

The kitchen caught my eye with its tiled floor, shiplap walls, and warm wood pieces.

Warm Kitchen in Moscow Home

I wish my kitchen was large enough to house a rustic kitchen island like this one. The dual pendant lights add a nice design touch.

A pretty dining room takes residence in a corner with lots of windows. A simple wicker pendant light hangs above a round table with wicker chairs. The wood floor wears an interesting herringbone pattern.

Even though the home has defined spaces, there’s still an open feel to the quaint cottage.

A cut-out in the wall creates the illusion of more space, while a rustic shelf provides a resting spot for a row of white candles.

You might remember this entryway with staircase. I featured it in a recent post about cozy reading corners .

In the bedrooms you’ll find more textured walls and wicker furniture. Texture adds interest to the muted color palette of this quaint cottage.

A beautiful home. I am so misguided. When I think of Russia, I think of dirty snow, no food on the grocery store shelves. Meat hanging by ropes in the market. Yes so misguided. Thanks for the showing.

So very cozy and i love the colors , lights fixtures and chair by the staircase. Thanks i enjoyed.

Beautiful cottage home. I find the cutout between the rooms an interesting idea as an illusion of a fireplace, but since they went with the firewood filled cutouts on the wall for effect, — I would have included at least a see-through glass electric fireplace, which would serve not only for warmth against cold Russian winters, but would also have provided the same illusion of space. It’s very cozy, which is my favorite kind of home.

Where did you find the kitchen island…. I love it, I want one. PS Aren’t you talking about Moscow, Idaho??

Country music legend Willie Nelson cancels tour performances

By Elias Lopez

June 26, 2024 / 6:30 PM EDT / CBS News

Country music icon Willie Nelson announced Wednesday that he will not be performing at a scheduled tour stop in Virginia Beach, according to a message posted  on the singer's Facebook page .

The cancellation comes after Nelson, who turned 91 in April, canceled his first scheduled performances in his  Outlaw Music Festival Tour  because of illness last week.

"We regret to inform you that Willie Nelson is not feeling well and, per doctor's orders, has been advised to rest for the next four days," according to a statement posted on social media June 21. "He is expected to make a quick recovery and join the Outlaw Music Festival tour next week."

38th Annual Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - Show

The Outlaw Music Festival, founded in part by Nelson, kicked off in Georgia. That was among the performances the singer missed, citing doctor's orders.

On Wednesday, the singer announced the latest cancellation. "Willie Nelson will not be performing at tonight's show in Virginia Beach," the Facebook post says. "We expect Willie to return to the tour shortly."

The lineup of the Outlaw Music Festival tour includes other big names who were still scheduled to perform Wednesday, including Bob Dylan, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and Celisse. Nelson's son, Lukas Nelson, and his band composed of other family members will also play their own set, along with some of Nelson's classics, the statement said.

At 91, Nelson has been busy in recent years releasing new music, touring and collaborating with some of the biggest names in music. He released an album in May called "The Border," had a couple of cameos in Beyoncé's "Cowboy Carter" country album and, last year, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame , where he performed with Chris Stapleton, Sheryl Crow and Dave Matthews.

"I haven't quit," Nelson told "CBS Mornings" last year . "Maybe I should, but … after every tour. I said, this is it. And then get the urge again to go back."

The Taylor Swift Economy Has Landed in Europe

Economists are debating what effect the singer’s sweep through Europe will have this summer as swarms of fans increase demand for hotels and services.

Images of Taylor Swift are projected on a giant screen during a performance.

By Eshe Nelson

Reporting from London

It’s not just Taylor Swift fans keeping a close eye on her Eras Tour dates. One of Europe’s most prominent economists is acutely aware that the singer is spending the summer jetting between Europe’s stadiums.

Philip Lane, the chief economist at the European Central Bank, had the pop star on his mind when he spoke at an event on Monday. The interviewer had asked him about the risk that stubborn inflation in the services sector could intensify, especially with Europe heading into a particularly busy summer with the Olympics in Paris and the Euro 2024 soccer championship in Germany.

“Well, that’s very interesting,” he said at the event . “You managed to say all that without saying Taylor Swift.”

Ms. Swift is touring Europe this summer, bringing in her wake hundreds of thousands of Swifties spending on airfare, hotels, restaurants and friendship bracelets . On Friday, she will perform the first of eight shows at London’s Wembley Stadium; about 700,000 people are expected to see the shows in the British capital. And analysts are debating the economic footprint it will leave.

Economists in the United States know that Eras is an economic tour de force. As consumers splurged on concerts, meals, vacations and other recreational experiences they missed out on during pandemic lockdowns, one company estimated that the tour could generate $4.6 billion in North America alone from spending on tickets, merchandise and travel.

Central bankers are justified in scrutinizing the potential inflationary effects of the arrival of a global superstar: In May last year, when Beyoncé kicked off her Renaissance World Tour in Stockholm, an economist attributed a blip in the inflation data to the singer’s concert, as fans traveled from afar to witness the first show.

Europe’s central banks have started to cut interest rates — or are poised to — as inflation has slowed substantially over the past year, putting their 2 percent target rates within sight. But there are lingering concerns that inflationary pressures have not been stamped out because price gains for services, which include hotels and restaurants, are repeatedly higher than expected.

The demand that the Eras Tour creates for hotel rooms and flights across Europe could push up prices that feed into each country’s inflation rate. Central bankers are sensitive to even minute changes in the data as they try to distinguish one-off effects from lasting ones. If central bankers worry that inflation is not slowing as expected, they could hold off cutting rates.

“All those tiny quirks are going to matter a lot,” said Lucas Krishan, a strategist at TD Securities in London. They can “muddle the picture for central banks heading into these decisions.”

Last month, Portugal’s inflation rate accelerated, in part because of a jump in hotel prices in Lisbon “resulting from a major cultural event,” the country’s statistics office said. Ms. Swift performed in Lisbon on May 24 and 25.

The impact that events like Ms. Swift’s tour have on inflation can be mitigated by how well a country’s economists anticipate the effect of her concerts so investors and others are not surprised by the data. Policymakers at the European Central Bank have said that the path back to 2 percent inflation will be “bumpy” and that a relatively strong tourism season is already baked into their forecasts.

But Mr. Krishan said it was possible that Ms. Swift's concerts in August, when the tour swings back through London, could increase services inflation in Britain, especially because one of her tour dates may coincide with the day that the nation’s statistics agency records price data. If hotel prices follow the pattern set when she played in Liverpool this month, services inflation could rise as much as 0.3 percentage points. Higher-than-expected inflation data in August could encourage Bank of England officials to hold off on cutting rates in September, Mr. Krishan said.

Other analysts are skeptical of Ms. Swift’s ability to have a seismic impact that shows up in national statistics.

“Taylor Swift is unlikely to be affecting central bank policy. She’s unlikely to be affecting government policy,” said George Moran, an economist at Nomura. “And I don’t think it’s a sustainable option for growth in a country to rely on having superstar concerts.”

Barclays predicted that Ms. Swift's tour would lead to a bump of nearly 1 billion pounds ($1.3 billion) in the British economy , but those suggestions are hard to substantiate, Mr. Moran said, because no one knows how much people are diverting their spending from other activities. Even then, £1 billion would not be enough to revitalize Britain’s stagnant economy .

Still, Mr. Moran added that for individual cities and certain sectors, the tour could have a meaningful impact. When tickets went on sale last summer, Airbnb searches in host cities increased more than 300 percent on average, the company said. The Greater London authority estimated that Ms. Swift’s eight London shows would generate £300 million for the economy .

“The impact is going to be more local than macro,” Mr. Moran said. “Taylor Swift is obviously a massive phenomenon, and the areas that she’s visiting is causing a big buzz in the hospitality sector.”

Willie Nelson sick, legend, 91, calls off more concerts ahead of NJ shows

country cottage tour

Willie Nelson has cancelled another appearance of his " Outlaw Music Festival Tour " due to an undisclosed illness, putting his next fews shows — including two in New Jersey — in question.

In a social media post Wednesday , it was announced the 91-year-old legend was cancelling another appearance, the Virginia Beach show — this time with no anticipated date of return.

In a social media post on June 21 , just hours ahead of his tour opener in Georgia, it was announced that Nelson was "not feeling well" and expected to be out four days per doctor's orders and expected back to tour this week.

The statement read "We expect Willie to return to the tour shortly."

Fans are reacting and commenting on social media with good wishes, "thoughts and prayers," and questioning his return to the tour and the stage.

Nelson is scheduled to headline Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July Picnic in Camden on Independence Day , just days after his Sunday, June 30 show at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ .

This is not the first time the country singer, 91, has cancelled performances due to health issues.

The statement read that Willie's son Lukas Nelson and the Family Band, along with a few guests would perform a set featuring some of Willie's hits in his absence.

This comes after Nelson was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year. The "On the Road Again" singer performed with Chris Stapleton, Dave Matthews and Sheryl Crow during the induction ceremony.

"Thanks for appreciating my music," Nelson said at the time.
