HOW TO GET TO LA UNION (From Manila, Clark, Baguio, and Cabanatuan)

baguio to la union trip

Last updated: 26 April 2024

When someone mentions La Union or ‘Elyu’ , it evokes thoughts of waves, surfers, and a laidback atmosphere. This province in the north provides both and more. Its beaches may not have the whiteness and fineness that its popular counterparts have, but it makes up for it with surf-able waves and a distinct culture. Beginners looking to learn the sport will have many surf shops and schools to choose from.

Other than surfing , the province has a number of noteworthy attractions to add to your itinerary. One of the highlights of a visit here is Tangadan Falls . You’ll need to walk through paved and mostly flat surfaces before you reach the actual waterfall. Ride the raft, swim in its pool, and take plenty of photos. You can also go cliff-diving in the natural pool directly above the waterfall.

Visitors may also watch the sunset after a day of surfing in Urbiztondo Beach . Visit the Ma-Cho Temple or drop by the old churches in the province to learn more about La Union’s culture and heritage. You’ll also find cafes and restaurants that serve local delicacies and Western food. You can also pick grapes during your visit.

Pebble Beach in Luna is a unique destination because instead of sand, you will see pebbles lining the shore. While still in Luna, head on over to Namacpacan Church . This Baroque structure in the town center is – simply put – beautiful. Its exterior is worth at least a couple of pictures.

La Union’s accessibility is one of the reasons it is a go-to destination for those who want to surf or just hang out by the beach. Here’s how you get to this province.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

How to Get to La Union

Other than Manila, you can reach Elyu from Baguio, Cabanatuan, or Pampanga.

From Manila

From the Metro (Cubao or Pasay Station), you have the option to alight at San Fernando or San Juan, both of which are part of La Union. If you just want to visit San Fernando, you can board a direct bus that takes roughly five to seven hours. Fare is upwards of P600.

From San Fernando, you can also get to Urbiztondo in San Juan. Board a jeep to Urbiztondo, which will usually take around 30 minutes.

For those who want to go to the beach directly, San Juan is the stop. There are direct buses from either Cubao or Pasay. The ride can take up to five to seven hours. Fare is upwards of P600 if you take a Partas bus. You can choose the Sebay drop-off, which will stop at the iconic 7-11 in San Juan.

You may also read our MANILA to LA UNION Bus Schedules & Operators article for more information.

From Baguio

If you’re coming from Baguio, the trip to La Union can take up to three hours. Go to Gov. Pack Road and board a bus bound for either Abra, Vigan, or Laoag. These buses pass Urbiztondo in San Juan. You can either take a Fred and Cathy Transport bus or a Partas bus. Fare for Partas buses range from P100 to P150.

If you’re arriving at Clark Airport, get on a jeep or a bus bound for Dau Bus Terminal. Once at the terminal, you can board a bus traveling to San Fernando or San Juan. This trip will approximately take five hours.

You may also read our CLARK AIRPORT Bus Guide article for more information.

From Cabanatuan

Take a van or a bus to Tarlac City (P160-550), and then board a bus from Tarlac Bus Terminal to San Juan or San Fernando, La Union (P260-360).

Alternatively, you can also board a bus bound for Baguio from Cabanatuan Bus Terminal, BUT alight at Sison, Pangasinan. From there, take a bus bound for Vigan or Laoag and then ask to be dropped off at San Juan or San Fernando.

If you want to travel via TPLEX, you can take a van to Dau Bus Terminal in Pampanga from Cabanatuan, then get on a bus bound for Ilocos (Laoag, Vigan, Candon) or Abra. These buses usually drop off and pick up passengers in La Union (San Fernando or San Juan).

Exploring La Union

The area of San Juan and Urbiztondo Beach is easy to explore and walk around in. There are buses and jeeps traveling to and from San Fernando and San Juan – it’s easy to shuttle between these places. You can also use a combination of public transportation and hiring a tricycle to visit the province’s attractions. You can bring your own vehicle as well.

Where to Stay in La Union

Aureo Resort La Union

La Union is a developed tourist destination so you’ll find plenty of accommodations regardless of your budget. San Fernando is a possible base for your trip around the province. The city has a number of places to eat after a day of activities. There are guesthouses and hotels that are affordable and comfortable. It is also a transportation hub that makes it easy to go anywhere in La Union.

San Juan is the likely stop of many because of Urbiztondo Beach and the surf shops that offer lessons and board rentals. This is where you’ll find resorts and hostels from budget to big spenders. This area is the ideal base for those who want to stay near the beach. You’ll also find plenty of buses and jeeps passing through in this area. Road Trip Guide: Baguio – Sagada – La Union

baguio to la union trip

Sagada is a scenic town nestled in the Mountain Province in Northern Luzon of the Philippines. For those coming from Manila and the rest of Luzon, it’s one of the best destinations you can travel to purely by land (no air or sea travel involved). The roads leading up offer the most spectacular view of mountains and cliffs. Once you get there, you can enjoy the cooler climate because of its high elevation and soak in the well-preserved culture of the Cordillera region.

Table of Contents

Where exactly is Sagada?

Sagada is a town in the Mt. Province about 391 km or a 10-12+ hour drive from Metro Manila via Baguio, La Trinidad, Bontoc Rd, Halsema Highway and the Mountain Trail.

Why it’s great for riders

If you want a long ride from Manila with great views through the mountains and lots of twisties, this is a good choice. While you can sleep on an overnight bus or van trip to get there, getting there by motorcycles offers a long and satisfying road trip. Combined with stays in Baguio City and La Union, which are along the way there and back from Manila, this route offers a complete vacation getaway showcasing some of the best of the Northern Philippines.

baguio to la union trip

Baguio, Sagada and La Union are all tourist-friendly destinations with lots of accommodations, dining options and tourist spots for sightseeing.

baguio to la union trip

Our previous trips here back in 2006 and 2013 involved long and bumpy bus rides. Though we rented motorcycles once we got there to ride to Banaue and back on a day trip, I’ve always wanted to ride all the way up from Manila. But my motorcycles aren’t exactly fit for long rides. I’ve actually been planning to get an upgrade, but since Kymco lent me a new unit of their Kymco Like 150i with Noodoe Navigation for a long-term review, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to test it out.

baguio to la union trip

Last February 2019, we finally had enough time to visit when Art got a leave from work. Here’s what I can share from our ride that might help others plan their trips.

baguio to la union trip

Route Map for Road Trip (small displacement bikes)

While some riders opt to ride all the way up to Sagada in one go, those riding smaller displacement bikes like scooters can’t pass the expressways (NLEX, TPLEX). In the Philippines, only motorcycles with 400 cc displacements and up are allowed to use these highways. It’s a highly discriminatory rule. Don’t get me started on this. I’d probably travel more to the North by scooter if not for that stupid rule. FYI, there’s a maximum speed limit of 100 km/h on expressways even for 400 cc motorcycles which scooters are also completely capable of achieving if there’s no traffic.

If you’re taking small displacement bikes, the most direct route means you will have to slog through the Service Road getting in and out of Metro Manila which involves passing through highly congested towns in the CAMANAVA area (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela), roads being dug up, lots of trucks and very slow public transport vehicles blocking the main road. The traffic was pretty bad in the portions of Malabon, Malolos, Calumpit and only got better once we got to Pampanga and Tarlac.

baguio to la union trip

An alternative route is to pass the Del Monte-Norzagaray Road leading to Angat and San Rafael in Bulacan, though other riders warn that a lot of trucks also pass there. Just plot your route on Googlemaps and click the “Avoid Highways and Tolls” options.

Experienced riders suggest leaving very early in the morning (like 3am ) to avoid the traffic. But if you’re like me who doesn’t like driving at night for safety, the horrible traffic is something you’re just going to have to deal with before you get to the good part. To make the trip more manageable, I suggest you split the ride by spending the first night in Baguio City before riding up to Sagada, which will take roughly 10 to 12 hours coming from Manila. Instead of riding back straight, we made a detour at the surf town of La Union.

baguio to la union trip

Ideally, you will want to spend at least 4 days for the ride or more to enjoy sightseeing around Baguio, Sagada and La Union. But you can cut this shorter if all you want to do is ride. Part of my goal for this ride was to visit craft beer destinations up North that I hadn’t been to yet. After a long ride, all you want to do is chill out and drink good beer and these three destinations offer that.

  • Day 1: Quezon City – Baguio City, Benguet (259 km)
  • Day 2: Baguio City, Benguet – Sagada, Mt. Province (154 km)
  • Day 3: Sagada (free day; optional)
  • Day 4: Sagada, Mt. Province to San Juan, La Union (167 km)
  • Day 5: San Juan, La Union to Quezon City (322 km)

Major Towns & Pit Stops

Coming from Quezon City, our first major stop after 4-5 hours of riding lunch at Max’s Restaurant in Plaza Luisita, Capas, Tarlac. There are lots of fast food options to choose from here and secure parking areas for the bikes. Before that, we passed through some scenic spots in Pampanga with a view of Mt. Arayat National Park and welcome arches. After passing Pangasinan and La Union, we finally arrived in the province of Benguet!

Day 1: Baguio City, Benguet

There are several options to get to Baguio City from the highway, but the two main routes are Kennon Road or McArthur Highway. We decided to pass Kennon Road, which at the time was one-way going up. This route has less traffic and you get views of the Benguet marker, the Lion’s Head and Kennon Road Viewpoint which as a nice view deck overlooking the road. However, this route is sometimes closed due to landslides. We reached Baguio City around 4:00 pm but passed through a lot of high-traffic areas and one-way roads just to get to the hotel.

  • Start point: Quezon City
  • End point: The Podium Boutique Hotel, Baguio City
  • Route: EDSA – MacArthur Highway / Manila North Road / R-9 and Kennon Road

  • Stops: Max’s Restaurant Tarlac (lunch), Capas Municipal Hall, Benguet welcome arch, Lion’s Head, Kennon Road Viewpoint
  • Travel time: 7-8 hours
  • Kilometers traveled: 259 km

The Podium Boutique Hotel

We stayed overnight at The Podium Boutique Hotel along the McArthur Highway, which has comfy rooms, an amazing view, secure parking area for bikes and an in-house restaurant and craft beer bar. So you don’t have to go far to eat and drink given the traffic.

Podium Boutique Hotel’s in-house restaurant called Hoka Brew specializes in craft beer, coffee and grills. They serve craft beer on tap from Bulul Brewery and Cerveza Sagada here.

Hōka Brew is the brainchild of a couple of architects and designers. The restaurant is very airy with wide windows offering a great mountain view.

baguio to la union trip

They also have an “Eat all you can! Drink all you can!” Mongolian buffet of unlimited fresh Baguio veggies, meat selections, squid and shrimp balls, eggs, rice and noodles plus a wide array of sauces for only Php 275.00. The complimentary breakfast of mountain rice and Baguio longaniza is pretty good too.

baguio to la union trip

Baguio Craft Brewery

For hopheads, no trip to Baguio City is complete without passing by Baguio Craft Brewery whose flagship beers are inspired by Ifugao mythology.

baguio to la union trip

They have a lot of craft beer varieties on tap to choose from including a Strawberry beer and Zigzagger (Triple-Hopped Double India Pale Ale) and wide menu of meals and appetizers like crispy dinakdakan . You can also buy bottles and cans of craft beer for takeout here.

baguio to la union trip

Baguio Craft Brewery is just walking distance from the hotel so there was no need to drive. We only stayed one night in Baguio and had to wake up early for another long drive so we didn’t drink too much.

baguio to la union trip

If it’s your first time in Baguio City or are staying longer, there are a lot of other things you can do there.

Day 2-3: Sagada, Mt. Province

baguio to la union trip

From Baguio City, we proceeded up to Sagada in the Mt. Province on the second day of our ride passing La Trinidad and Bontoc Rd/Halsema Highway. Halsema Highway itself is an amazing and beautifully scenic route with breathtaking mountain views and lots of twisties.

baguio to la union trip

Along this route, you’ll pass by (formerly) the Highest Point in the Philippine Highway System in Atok, Benguet, the Mountain Province welcome arch, fields of lettuce growing by the roadside, beautiful scenery and winding mountain roads.

baguio to la union trip

Because of a landslide, the Sabangan stretch was closed so we had to make a detour through Abatan Road and Bauko. We also accidentally passed through the steeper backroad (South Road) that passes Sumaguing Cave before reaching the town proper of Sagada.

baguio to la union trip

  • Start point: The Podium Boutique Hotel, Baguio City
  • End point: Sagada Forest Lodge, Mt. Province
  • Route: La Trinidad – Bontoc Rd/Halsema Highway – Abatan – Bauko – South Road
  • Type of roads: Mountain roads, LOTS of twisties, some steep sections, gravel roads due to road constructions, moderate traffic in small towns
  • Stops: 2nd Highest Point: Philippine Highway System, Mt. Province marker (for coffee), random roadside views
  • Travel time: 5-6 hours
  • Kilometers traveled: 154 km

Sagada Forest Lodge

While in Sagada, we stayed two nights in Sagada Forest Lodge & Restaurant , a quaint and quiet lodge located in the outskirts of town. It has a gated semi-flat area to park motorcycles. The lodge has its own restaurant and is about a 5-8 minute walk to Sagada Cellar Door.

baguio to la union trip

They have several cozy rooms in the lower ground floor area. Our had its own CR and a common sala, fireplace and outdoor fire pits looking out on rice terraces and pine trees We were the only guests so we ended up having the whole place to ourselves. It was very peaceful and quiet. We felt like we were in our own private cabin in the woods.

Misty Lodge Cafe

There are lots of places to eat in Sagada but we went back to our old favorites like Misty Lodge & Cafe which serves pizzas, burgers, platter meals, breakfast meals and drinks.

baguio to la union trip

Salt & Pepper Diner

Another place you can try along the main street of Sagada is Salt & Pepper Diner which serves local specialties like Dinakiw (grilled pork belly), Rosemary Inutom (baked chicken) or Mushroom Inutom served with potatoes.

baguio to la union trip

Sagada Cellar Door

One of the best places to relax after a long ride with beer is Sagada Cellar Door, a microbrewery within a forest that serves craft beer infused with local ingredients! Check out my full review and more photos in the link above.

baguio to la union trip

We spent an extra day in Sagada just taking it easy and chilling out. If you plan to do any tours there, please read my separate post on new rules and tours.

Day 4: San Juan, La Union

After the beauty of Halsema Highway, I really wasn’t expecting much from the ride going down to La Union, but it ended up being one of my favorite parts. Before heading down, we stopped for photo ops at Ampanga Heights, a small cafe and souvenir shop that offers amazing views of Kiltepan Peak.

baguio to la union trip

The winding mountain road in Cervantes and Suyo which are part of Ilocos Norte was also stunning.

baguio to la union trip

We passed through beautiful mountain roads and hardly encountered other vehicles. We didn’t really make good time because I kept wanting to stop to take photos. I mean, just look at that! The scenery was overwhelming. The road looks like a Great Wall down there.

baguio to la union trip

We eventually made it back to the National Highway and our hotel in time to catch the sunset. Estimated travel time should have only been about 5 hours but we made lots of stops, which were totally worth it.

baguio to la union trip

  • Start point: Sagada Forest Lodge, Mt. Province
  • End point: Vessel Hostel, San Juan, La Union
  • Route: Tagudin – Cervantes – Sabangan Road – MacArthur Highway
  • Type of roads: Mountain roads, LOTS of twisties, downhills, long flat last stretch
  • Stops: Ampanga Heights, Bessang Pass Natural Park, random roadside views
  • Travel time: 6-7 hours
  • Kilometers traveled: 167 km

The Garage, Vessel Hostel

There are lots of accommodations, roadside inns, beach resorts and artsy hostels to choose from in the surf town of San Juan, La Union. Book budget-friendly guesthouses in La Union here.

I booked The Garage at Vessel Hostel, where you sleep inside a Volkswagen van in a garage, for the novelty factor and because I wanted additional non-motorcycling material to write about. The Kombi is good for two people and is fitted with a ½ HP window type AC, a twin bed for two, a locker, night lights, curtains, and has Wi-Fi.

baguio to la union trip

I personally found the unique set-up and “van life” vibe really cool and cozy, but it’s probably more ideal for couples or friends on a chill weekend vacation rather than tired riders just looking for a place to crash for the night. The sleeping area can be a bit cramped for taller guys.

The Garage, Vessel Hotel. Urbiztondo, MacArthur Highway, San Juan, 2514 La Union. Rate: Php 2,900 per night with complimentary continental breakfast for 2 (full payment required to reserve). https://vesselhostel.com/

Gefseis Greek Grill

We didn’t stop for lunch during the ride, so we had late lunch at Gefseis Greek Grill, a beachside restaurant offering a taste of authentic Greek cuisine.

baguio to la union trip

Curious Creatures Taproom

There are a lot of food parks and food hubs now in San Juan. We checked out Great Northwest where you can find Curious Creatures Craft Beer.

baguio to la union trip

Too bad they were all out of Surftown La Union Blonde Ale. I asked the bartender if they had empty bottles just for photo ops, but they didn’t 🙁 They had other beer variants on tap though.

Day 5: Back to Manila

So after that amazing ride and all the beautiful scenery, we made the mistake of driving back to Manila on a Friday through rush hour traffic. If I could repeat this ride, we should have left much earlier or stayed an extra night in Angeles City in Pampanga then driven back Saturday morning instead. We tried to take an alternate route through San Rafael, Bulacan to avoid traffic but had to double back. Apparently the road we were told to pass by my navigation system had closed so we had to backtrack and ended up on the Plaridel Bypass Road.

baguio to la union trip

  • Start point: Vessel Hostel, San Juan, La Union
  • End point : Quezon City
  • Route: MacArthur Highway / Manila North Road / R-9 – Plaridel Bypass Road – EDSA
  • Type of roads: Long flat highways, moderate traffic in small towns, terrible traffic in last stretch approaching Manila
  • Stops: Lunch in Tarlac, View of Arayat, gas stations
  • Travel time: 9- 10 hours
  • Kilometers traveled: 322 km

Man, that last very long stretch of traffic going back beside hordes of trucks, clogged roads, and flooded streets because of a burst pipe almost ruined the memory of the great ride. I didn’t bother taking any photos anymore there. Though I love using the scooter for city driving, I can see why riders invest in bigger displacement bikes just so they can use the expressway.

baguio to la union trip

If only I could skip the getting in and out of Manila section and start the ride somewhere in Tarlac or Pampanga, I’d be riding here every weekend. I thought we’d be home by afternoon, but it was almost 9:00 pm by the time we got back. But the important thing is we got home safely. Overall, this was one heck of a ride and I’m glad to have finally ticked this off my bucket list.

baguio to la union trip

Based on Googlemaps estimates, total distance should be about 902 kms but this doesn’t account for going around Sagada to eat, backtracking, detours to load gas, etc. The Kymco Like odometer reading shows that we covered more than 1,000 kilometers during this ride. Achievement unlocked!

  • STARTING ODOMETER: 1312 km
  • END ODOMETER: 2353 km
  • TOTAL: 1,041 kilometer s

Thank you to Kymco Philippines for lending me the All-New Kymco Like 150i. Check out my review of the bike here .

Nice blog, detailed and very helpful. Hopefully i can be able to achieve this kind of road trip. Thank you so much!

Thanks, Rom. I appreciate the comment 🙂

Greetings, I am very much interested in riding bikes in Philippines. I am also a regular biker. I would like to find out more about details of the trip. Need some details like : 1. Motorbike rent cost – 2. Place of ride start and end routes – 3. Hotels and prices –

Thank you.. 🙂

Hello Kumar, for international tourists interested in riding in the Philippines, especially those who want guided tours, I suggest you check out my post: https://www.traveling-up.com/motorcycle-tours-adventure-bike-rentals-in-the-philippines/ .

1. Motorbike rent cost – the cost really depends on the model of the bike and how long you’re renting it for. Most scooters cost P300-500 a day in small island provinces. Bigger bikes usually cost P800-P1200 a day or more. Adventure bikes like Royal Enfields can cost P2.500 to P3,500 a day. 2. Place of ride start and end routes: If you’re riding up in Northern Luzon, I suggest starting in Pampanga because traffic in Manila is terrible and you will not enjoy passing through there. I highly recommend Palawan Island as well. You can start and end your ride in Puerto Princesa City. Check out my other post: https://www.traveling-up.com/road-trip-guide-palawan-island-north/ 3. Hotels and prices – Basic decent hotels and inns in the Philippines usually have rooms ranging from P1,000 – P2,000 a night. Luxury hotels usually cost around P3000-P9,000 or more. It really depends on the destination.

Please check out my related motorcycling posts if you’re interested in specific destinations.

Very informative article.

Thank you for the recommendation. This is what you meant by adventure, but getting there is the best part of the trip. amazing locations I appreciate you sharing.

Mc Arthur highway, Manila to Angeles vice versa, is always stressful. Sometimes, one would think it was done deliberately so more people would be forced to upgrade and use Nlex Sctex.

Baguio to Sagada trip, I would prefer using a scooter. Nimble light and less hassle shifting along the tight curves.

The old baguio road from Tarlac with Big trees along the highway was such a delight.

25 LA UNION TOURIST SPOTS & Things to Do

25 LA UNION TOURIST SPOTS & Things to Do

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Hailed as the Surfing Capital of the North , La Union takes pride in its monster swells that hug its shores for most of the year. Along with Siargao and Baler, “Elyu” , as regulars fondly call it, completes the holy trinity of Philippine surfing. The province’s reputation as a wave rider’s playground has been well documented in various publications; it’s pretty much common knowledge.

But there is so much more to La Union than its waves. Sprinkled throughout the province are a diverse set of attractions that have been largely overlooked. From historic manmade sites like Baluarte Watch Tower and Pindangan Ruins to other natural wonders like Tangadan Falls and Immuki Island, here are other noteworthy places to visit and things to do that will make you fall in love even deeper with La Union.

Note: Here are La Union’s travel requirements for tourists . But because travel policies and opening hours often change, please check the official websites or Facebook pages for the latest announcements first before going.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

BEST TOURIST SPOTS IN LA UNION

Urbiztondo Surfing

Okay, let’s get this out of the way first since it would be a grave crime to not include surfing in this list.

The best time to surf is from July to March. Whether you’re a seasoned rider, an excited beginner or simply a spectator, surfing is inescapable here. Surfboard rentals and surfing lessons are everywhere. Rates vary depending on the season (peak and off-peak).

Surfing in La Union

Surfing Lesson Rates: P350-500 (1 hour, with surfboard and instructors); P200-250 (surfboard rental only). Surfing Season: July to October (South Swell); November to March (North Swell)

San Juan Food Trip

For non-surfers, San Juan offers another type of trip — the delicious kind! The food here is enough to compel us to visit La Union again and again. The food scene here is alive and kicking. There’s just a lot to discover and there’s always something new. Every time we visit, we try numerous joints, yet it always seems like we’re barely scratching the surface. But it’s okay because it means that we have more reasons to visit again.

Whether you are on a budget or in the mood to splurge, San Juan has a lot to offer. Our favorites so far are the following:

  • MASA Bakehouse – Try their shakshouka and Manong Benny (Eggs Benedict)
  • Gefseis Greek Grill – chicken souvlaki and moussaka
  • Mad Monkeys – smoky BBQ bacon burger
  • Tagpuan – goto and lugaw
  • Dampa sa San Juan – mixed seafood
  • Sabong Chicken – honey bagoong fried chicken
  • Kabsat – beef kare-kare and shrimp in crab fat
  • Nak Nak – crispy pork kare-kare and beef sisig
  • Makai Bowls – surfer’s bowl

Aside from the restaurants, San Juan also harbors cafés where you can just enjoy a cup of your favorite coffee concoction while chilling and vibing with your friends! There are excellent homegrown coffee shops offering local coffee blends and other beverages. We’ve tried the offerings El Union Coffee and Clean Beach Coffee .

We’ll be publishing a separate article about the various food places around San Juan soon, so watch out for that.

Tangadan Falls

Nestled in the mountainous area of San Gabriel, Tangadan Falls is probably the most famous of the many cascades in the province. Baroro River flows down two tiers, each with its own natural pool. The whole place is surrounded by smooth limestone cliffs and peppered with boulders.

Tangadan Falls

During the rainy season, the lower tier produces twin cascades. The cold water is refreshing after the 15-minute trek down from the jump-off point. If you are not a confident swimmer, you can rent a life vest or just swim in the shallow parts. Avoid the mossy rocks because they are very slippery, but if you can’t avoid them, be extra careful. For the adventurous, you can go cliff jumping!

The way back to the jump-off point entails ascending trails and taking numerous concrete steps. Although there are rest stops, it might still be challenging for seniors and those with mobility problems.

No tour guide, no entry policy. You also need to present the official receipt (OR) issued by the Municipal Treasury Office before you can enter the Tangadan Falls vicinity. The office is located beside the San Gabriel Police Station.

Location: Barangay Amontoc, San Gabriel, La Union Visiting Hours: 6:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily) Fees: P30/head (Environmental Fee); P500 (Guide Fee); P60 (Life Vest Rental) Habal-Habal Fare: P400 (Roundtrip, 1 pax); P600 (Roundtrip, 2 pax). The trip is from Municipal Treasury Office to Tangadan Falls Trailhead.

Immuki Island

Accessible after a 30-minute drive from San Juan, Immuki Island is perfect for those who are looking for new adventures in La Union. Off the coast of Barangay Paraoir, it is a rocky paradise adorned with mangroves and carved with three picturesque lagoons.

Immuki Island

The lagoons have steady and clear but deep waters, perfect for swimming and cliff diving. You can even see fish swimming! However, note that there are shallow areas and there are also deep areas. The deep parts of the lagoons range from eight (8) to twelve (12) feet in depth. Moreover, put on protective footwear like aqua shoes because the rocks and corals are sharp.

To access Immuki Island, you need to register at the barangay hall. There’s a designated parking lot if you are bringing your car. From here, there are two ways of reaching the island — by treading the waters during low tide and by riding a balsa during high tide. Barangay Paraoir boasts an abundance of sea urchins, so you might spot some on the way to the island.

You cannot bring food and drinks to the island, but you can use one of the cottages along the beach if you are planning to have your lunch there. There are shops, showers and changing cubicles, but they are very basic. Bring your own toiletries and towels too.

Location: Barangay Paraoir, Balaoan, La Union Visiting Hours: 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily) Fees: P20/head (Environmental Fee); P250 (Balsa Rental, Good for 5-7 pax); P10 (Shower Fee); Donation-Type (Cottage)

Bauang Grape Farms

The town of Bauang boasts hectare upon hectare of vineyards and grape farms. Overshadowed by the beaches and waves of the neighboring towns, the grape-picking activity in Bauang is certainly an underrated attraction in the province. But timing is everything here because grapes are seasonal. Luckily for us, we visited in March, just in time for the grape-picking season!

La Union Grape Picking

Along the long stretch of MacArthur Highway, from TPLEX going to San Fernando and San Juan, we noticed several people with posters that read: “Grape Picking” or “Grape Farm/Grape Picking”. We didn’t know whether or not they are legit, so we went straight to Lomboy Grape Farm ‘s Uvas Café and inquired there. We chose it because the founder of Lomboy Farm is the pioneer of grape farming in the region, credited for introducing the industry to La Union.

After registering, we were led to the partner grape farm (Danny Ancheta’s Grapes Farm). The team actually enjoyed our time picking grapes and sampling local grape wine, fruit wine, and natural fruit juice concentrate — Mangosteen, Blueberry, and Guyabano.

Best Grape-Picking Months: March to May (Dry Season) Fees: P25/head (Registration/Entrance Fee); P350/kilo (Grape Picking Activity); P25 (Parking Fee) Established Grape Farms: Lomboy Grape Farms, Gapuz Grapes Farm, Danny Ancheta’s Grapes Farm, Manguerra Grapes Farm, Calica Grapes Farm, Acosta Grapes Farm, and others

SAN JUAN Tourist Spots

Urbiztondo beach & sunset.

This is where it all started! More than half of Elyu’s income is generated in San Juan, particularly from the Urbizondo area where accommodations and dining places mushroomed between the 2000s and 2010s. This is La Union’s tourism hub.

Urbiztondo Beach

From its wide bed of sand to its spectacular sunset, you’ll find a lot to enjoy here even if you’re not interested in surfing at all. The shore is lined with restaurants and cafes, making it a favorite hangout place for sunbathers, foodies, and sunset lovers. The area is also a popular spot for nightlife and beach parties.

Urbiztondo Beach is the best area to stay in La Union because of its proximity to the beach and the highway as well as its wide array of dining options. Other attractions in La Union are also easily accessible from here. You’ll also find most accommodations here.

If you wish to make Urbiztondo as your base, here are some of your lodging options:

Lotus Valley Farm

NOTE: Lotus Valley Farm remains CLOSED , but we’re including it here on this list in case they decide to open. (The management said they would be opening SOON when we inquired.)

Lotus Valley Farm

Are you more of a mountain person? Do you prefer peace and quiet? Well, you might want to consider staying at Lotus Valley Farm , a sustainable and eco-friendly nature resort tucked away in the mountainous parts of the popular surf town.

It started in 2009 when owners and environment advocates Toby and Marissa Tamayo purchased hectares of land and transformed it into a verdant and flourishing agro-tourism destination. They created a forest paradise with over 20,000 trees of various kinds (narra, antipolo, molave, etc.) and countless medicinal, ornamental and edible plants. And in the middle, they built bamboo huts, where guests can spend the night.

It also features a lotus flower plant garden, a stream, and a spring that also helps supply water throughout the barangay. Some parts of this hidden gem are not open to the public because they are home to wild bees, bats, and birds, just to name some. The food options offered here are plant-based, farm-to-table types.

Before the pandemic, we had the privilege of touring the farm and experiencing acupuncture detox and sound meditation. We also had a delicious plant-based dinner made from vegetables that were harvested from the farm itself.

Day tour visits were allowed pre-pandemic. But staying overnight in their kubo is another experience. No need for air-conditioning and you’ll get to wake up to the sound of the birds! If you are planning to spend a night here (when they reopen), note that the cellphone signal is rough, so that means away from your gadgets and more time to commune with nature.

If you’re only interested in seeing an expanse of lotus plants, other than Lotus Valley Farm, there are also roadside lotus farms that are publicly accessible in La Union like this one:

There are sunflower farms, too.

CURMA (Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions) focuses on the conservation and protection of marine turtles through regular beach patrolling and hatchery management.

Other than that, the organization also partners with other interested parties for coastal clean-ups and pawikan-release events.

The group also conducts information and education campaigns and other advocacies like the “No Plastic” campaign. If you are interested in volunteering or donating, you can visit the headquarters or the official website to learn more.

SAN FERNANDO Tourist Spots

Ma cho temple.

The Ma Cho Temple is an iconic cultural landmark in San Fernando. Constructed in 1977, this is said to be the first Taoist temple in the Philippines and is dedicated to the Chinese sea goddess Mazu (Ma Cho).

Ma Cho Temple in La Union

Resting atop a hill, it affords a panoramic view of the San Fernando Harbor and the West Philippine Sea. It features the Altar of the Goddess of Ma Cho, the Altar of Our Heavenly Father, the Statues of the 18 Taoist Disciples, the Majestic Five-Door Gate, the Bamboo Garden, the Lian Thing Pagoda, The Goddess of Mercy (Kwan Yen), the Bell and Drum Tower, and its renowned Spider-Type Dome. The temple is open to both worshipers and non-worshipers.

There’s an annual pilgrimage wherein the image of Ma Cho travels from San Fernando to the Archdiocesan Shrine of Our Lady of Caysasay in Taal, Batangas during the 5th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar because many followers believe that Ma Cho and Our Lady of Caysasay are one and the same.

Address: Ma Cho Temple, Quezon Avenue, San Fernando, La Union Opening Hours: 7:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily). Note that the schedule may change, so check the official website or Facebook page before going. Entrance Fee: FREE

Filipino-Chinese Friendship Pagoda

Filipino Chinese Friendship Pagoda in La Union

Also sitting on top of a hill, this Friendship Pagoda is a commemoration of the neighborly relations between the Filipinos and the Chinese people. It provides a scenic view of the city of San Fernando and the sea beyond.

At its feet lies a park where locals can just hang and unwind. (When we visited, locals stayed here to escape the heat and just chill.)

There are two entry points to the pagoda. The easier route is at the top where the signage is located, while the other one entails a short trek up from the public park entrance below.

One of the landmarks is the La Union Provincial Capitol building, located just a few meters away from the pagoda.

Address: Filipino-Chinese Friendship Pagoda, Aguila Road, San Fernando, La Union Opening Hours: 24/7 Entrance Fee: FREE

Pindangan Ruins

Pindangan Ruins La Union

Constructed in 1764 under the Spanish rule, the Pindanagan Ruins is what’s left of the first ever Catholic church of San Fernando — mostly the age-old stone walls and the buttresses.

Adjacent to the Carmelite Monastery, this historical landmark is managed and maintained by the Carmelite sisters.

Please avoid leaning on or climbing up the walls for your safety and for the preservation of the ruins.

Address: Pindangan, San Fernando, La Union Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily). Note that the schedule may change, so check the latest announcement first before going. Entrance Fee: P25 (Regular); P20 (Senior/Student); P500 (Photo Shoot and Video Shoot)

Halo-halo de Iloko

Halo halo de Iloko

It is hot in La Union, especially in the dry, summer months. No wonder halo-halo is especially popular in the region. And when it comes to this dessert/snack, no other name in San Fernando can beat Halo-halo de Iloko (at least in terms of recall). It is said that the ingredients they use are fresh every day and are mostly sourced from local suppliers.

They also serve rice meals and snacks, but we ordered all three halo-halo items on their menu — Fiesta Halo-Halo (P120), Buko Halo-Halo (P195), and Pritong Halo-Halo (P150). The first two capture the taste of classic halo-halo we are all familiar with. (Don’t expect mind-blowing twists or special or unusual ingredients.)

What we enjoyed the most, however, was the pritong halo-halo, which is very different from the typical halo-halo fix. In this creative take, ingredients like bananas are served hot and stacked with ubeng halaya, cheese and other ingredients. The cherry on top is a nice touch, too. If you could order just one, make it this one.

Pritong Halo Halo

Confidently marketed as La Union’s best, Halo-Halo de Iloko is usually crowded during peak hours. It is quite popular among locals and tourists alike. When we visited, we came before the peak hours so we were able to find a table. Before we finished our halo-halo, there was already a line of customers waiting outside. And it was mid-week!

By the way, if you are traveling by private car, the designated parking lot is far. We had a hard time securing a slot, so we opted to go for a pay-parking slot, which was a five-minute tricycle ride from Halo-Halo de Iloko.

Address: Zandueta Street, San Fernando, La Union Opening Hours: 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM (Daily). Note that the schedule may change, so check the official Facebook page before going.

Christ the Redeemer Statue

Christ the Redeemer Status La Union

San Fernando’s hilly terrain provides perfect sites for landmark structures such as the Ma Cho Temple and the Filipino-Chinese Friendship Pagoda. Besides these two, another significant hilltop landmark is the 25-foot Christ the Redeemer statue. Inaugurated in June 2007, the statue symbolizes overflowing gratitude, blessings, and protection.

We actually didn’t plan on making a stop here. We stumbled upon it by chance while looking for parking space, so we just decided to spend a bit of time here. It can be accessed by climbing a pretty steep alley in a concealed part of town.

It can get really hot at noon, so if you are planning to reach the top on foot, go here early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the heat. Anyway, it overlooking the city proper and the San Fernando Bay to the west, so it’s best to visit in late afternoon for the sunset.

Address: Reservoir Hill, Barangay I, San Fernando City, La Union Opening Hours: 24/7 Entrance Fee: FREE

Thunderbird Poro Point Resort

Thunderbird Poro Point La Union

Located at the highest point of Poro Point Peninsula and facing the San Fernando Bay, Thunderbird Poro Point encompasses a land area of about 65 hectares, housing luxurious villas, restaurants, wellness facilities, and a nine-hole golf course.

The resort’s impeccable Santorini-inspired theme and the sheer look-and-feel of the place do give off an exclusive vibe, which some may find intimidating. (We were kinda intimidated at first. LOL.) But day trip visitors are welcome here. The P300 entrance fee is consumable and is inclusive of access to some of the dining options and to explore and take photos in some areas, including the resort’s symbolic Santorini dome.

Pre-pandemic, day tour hours were from 8:00 AM to 5:00 pm. However, when we visited, we were told it would open at 11am. (They might have referred to the restaurant and we just misunderstood.) Anyway, we decided to just return past 11am. Unfortunately, it was really hot at the time. The sun was scorching and the white surroundings were blinding, so we weren’t able to explore much. We could have melted if we stayed any longer. So if you can, visit in the late afternoon, when the sun is less harsh.

We still had a grand time, though, because the resort is just gorgeous!

Address: Poro Point Freeport Zone, San Fernando City, La Union Day Tour Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Daily). Reservation is required at least 24 hours before arrival. Day Tour Entrance: P300/head (F&B consumable). If you want to access the swimming pool, check the official website or Facebook page for day tour package promos.

Poro Point Lighthouse

A short drive north of Thunderbird Resort, Poro Point Lighthouse is one of La Union’s historical landmarks, dating back to 1905 during the American occupation. Facing the West Philippine Sea, it rises at the height of 27 feet and serves as one of the points of interest in the Poro Point Freeport Zone.

Since it’s located just across Poro Point Baywalk, many locals include this spot in their walking, jogging, or cycling routes both in the morning and in the late afternoon (just in time for the sunset!)

Address: Poro Point Freeport Zone, San Fernando City, La Union Opening Hours: 24/7 Entrance Fee: FREE

NORTHERN LA UNION Tourist Spots

Paraoir manmade forest.

Paraoir Manmade Forest in La Union

If you’re going to Luna and you’re coming from San Juan, San Fernando or Immuki Island, you’ll be passing under its green canopy!

Dressing a significant portion of the Bacnotan-Luna-Balaoan Road, the long stretch of towering canopies creates a natural green tunnel, mesmerizing numerous travelers. People usually park their vehicles on the side of the road to take photos. It’s very similar to the mahogany forest in Bohol.

If you are planning to stop and take photos too, just remember that this is a major road, so make sure that you park your car properly to avoid obstructing the traffic and be careful when taking photos.

Nalvo Pebble Beach

La Union's Pebble Beach

Looking for unusual beaches in La Union? You need not go far because just 30-45 minutes away from San Juan is the town of Luna!

While the beaches of San Juan are strewn with relatively fine sand, Luna’s shore is covered in pebbles. The most popular part of this long stretch is the Nalvo Pebble Beach. You’ll find a number of resorts here, but it’s best known for the art galleries that punctuate it — Bahay na Bato, Bato de Luna, and Kamay na Bato. After exploring the beach, visit one or all of these art galleries and appreciate the pebble works and structures.

Location: Nalvo Norte and Nalvo Sur, Luna, La Union

Baluarte Watchtower

Inside Baluarte Watchtower La Union

The Baluarte Watchtower , also called Luna Watchtower , is one of the five historic watchtowers in La Union declared by the National Museum of the Philippines as cultural treasures in 2014. This centuries-old structure served as a lookout tower for invading enemies such as Chinese, Japanese, and Moro pirates.

Today, the restored brick tower is one of the most visited tourist attractions in Luna. It also stands just next to the pebble beach, making it snap-worthy from almost any angle. (Well, not during our visit because an event was set to be staged at the site.)

Baluarte Watchtower

If you get hungry, you can grab a drink and meal at nearby Lola Mending’s Cafe . Don’t forget to try the Baluarte Supreme churros , which takes the shape of the watchtower!

Baluarte Churros by Lola Mending's Cafe

Address: Barangay Victoria, Luna, La Union Opening Hours: 24/7 Entrance Fee: FREE

Bahay na Bato

Bahay na Bato in La Union

This extensive art gallery used to be the vacation house of Dr. Edison and Dr. Purita Chan-Noble. Situated on the pebble beach of Barangay Nalvo Norte, the property is mostly built using pebbles and stones.

The first things you’ll probably notice are the statues scattered throughout the site. They vary greatly in terms of theme and design, but our favorites are those whimsical and almost tongue-in-cheek artworks that show the artist’s sense of humor.

Statues around Bahay na Bato in Luna

The indoor galleries also showcase Filipino artifacts. In between two houses lies a garden, adorned with trees, giving life to the seemingly cold and hard environment and giving visitors shaded sanctuary away from the burning sun.

The whole place caters to guests of all ages and boasts various Instagrammable photo spots. The property is also open for prenuptial shoots and other themed photoshoots.

If you want to maximize and enjoy your visit, avoid going during noon time when the sun is too merciless. Early morning or late afternoon is the best time to go.

Address: Bahay na Bato, Nalvo Norte, Luna, La Union Opening Hours: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). Note that the schedule may change, so check the official Facebook page before going. Entrance Fee: P50 (Regular); FREE (Below 2 y/o)

Bato de Luna

Bato de Luna

Can’t get enough of the pebble-lous installations and artworks? Bato de Luna is not too far from Bahay na Bato. Actually, from the main road (Bacnotan-Luna-Balaoan Road), when you make a turn on the barangay road leading to the art galleries, the first property you’ll see is Bato de Luna to your right.

You know you’re at the right place when you’re greeted by a gigantic statue of a turtle, made of, you guessed it, stones and pebbles! This is the site’s most prominent structure, which houses an interactive optical illusion floor painting, textured colorful walls filled with artworks, and a painted ceiling.

Bato de Luna puts on the spotlight the works of South Korean stone artist and sculptor, Mr. Bong Kim (whom I think is also the same creative mind behind some of the pieces at neighboring Bahay na Bato). Other attractions are quirky and naughty stone figures and colorful photo spots.

It also has a restaurant that offers breakfast meals as well as ‘unli rice’ and ‘unli sabaw’ meal options. You can also buy pasalubong from the souvenir shop.

Address: Bato de Luna, Nalvo Norte, Luna, La Union Opening Hours: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). Note that the schedule may change, so check the official Facebook page before going. Entrance Fee: P50 (Regular)

Darigayos Beach

Darigayos Beach

Compared to other beaches in the municipality of Luna, Darigayos Beach is not pebbly, but the cream-colored sand is not powdery fine either. Locals and some tourists still flock to the beach because the waves here are relatively calmer. There are parts that are shallow, but there are also parts that are deep, so always be on your guard and familiarize yourself with the beachscape first.

Choose a spot that you feel most comfortable swimming in. Open huts and cottages are available for rent.

Location: Darigayos Beach, Bacnotan – Luna – Balaoan Road, Luna, La Union

SOUTHERN LA UNION Tourist Spots

Ciano umok gallery & cafe ilocano.

NOTE: Ciano Umok might still be temporarily CLOSED for now. We’re trying to determine whether or not they are open but we have yet to receive confirmation. But we’ll still put this in the list just in case it opens soon.

Ciano Umok Gallery

We’ve already mentioned Bauang’s grape farms, but there are still plenty of other attractions on the southern end of the province. Also in Bauang is Ciano Umok Gallery & Cafe .

Nestled right smack in the middle of the hilly Barangay Palugsi-Limmansangan, the place functions as an art gallery and a restaurant. The gallery showcases the works of the owner, Cesar Dumo, and other local artists.

If you get hungry, try one of the homemade meals and snacks at the gallery’s in-house Cafe Ilocano . Usually, people stop here for halo-halo. Its version is a bit unusual, carrying only three ingredients — nata, kaong, and red mongo. Another unique thing about it is instead of ice and milk, they top it with something similar to ice cream. It’s like milk-flavored shaved ice that you can eat right away. You can totally skip the halo part.

Agoo Eco Fun World

Agoo Eco Fun World

South of Bauang is the town of Agoo, named after the wispy Agoho trees that grow abundantly in the area. In fact, the highway leading to the town center is lined with these towering trees.

Launched in 2014, the Agoo Eco Fun World in Barangay Santa Rita West was developed by the local government and is part of reforestation efforts of the DENR. Locals and tourists alike are drawn to its enchanting manmade forest featuring thousands of Agoho trees, a lagoon, the view of Mount Katayagan, and the beach that faces the Lingayen Gulf.

The whole place is picture-worthy, making it one of the popular destinations for photoshoots. Visitors can also rent picnic huts at the beach area, spread their own mats, or pitch their own tents.

Some of the things to do here are having a picnic, nature bathing, swimming, sunbathing, watching the sunset, kiteflying, jogging, walking, appreciating the mangroves, and doing ‘aura’ photo sessions. Please clean up after yourself if you are planning to have a picnic here.

The best time to go is early morning when the sun is still not too high and late afternoon if you want to catch the sunset.

Agoo Basilica

Agoo Basilica

Founded in 1578 by the Franciscan order, Agoo Basilica , officially named Basilica Minore of Our Lady of Charity , was first dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi. The current Mexocan-Baroque structure dates back to 1975, but it was officially opened to the public in 1978.

After the destructive earthquake of 1990, the 19th-century bell tower was destroyed and the church had to undergo a major reconstruction. However, the bell tower was beyond repair and had to be replaced by a new one.

The present-day minor basilica has two bell towers, doors with Hebrew-script carvings of the ten commandments, a pipe organ, and an underground cemetery and chapel where it also houses holy relics of saints. It is the seat of the Santa Monica Parish of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Fernando de La Union.

Address: Grotto Road corner MacArthur Highway, Poblacion, Agoo, La Union

PUGAD Pugo Adventure

Situated further inland, far from the coastal towns of La Union, Pugo’s forested and mountainous landscape is a perfect ‘nest’ for PUGAD Pugo Adventure , a very popular leisure and adventure park. Sharing its border with Baguio , the town is blessed with relatively cooler temperature.

It prides itself on being the first to offer zipline adventure in La Union. Other features include a botanical garden, mini zoological park, and swimming pools! Aside from ziplining, guests can also ride ATVs, try the Giant Swing, play Paintball, or do wall climbing.

Although it’s far from the city and major highways, the park is still accessible via public transportation. If you are driving your own car, you can access it via Agoo-Baguio Road (Jose D. Aspiras Highway), then turning to PUGAD Trail. There’s a huge signage directing guests to that road.

Address: PUGAD Pugo Adventure, Pugo, La Union Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM (Daily). Note that the schedule may change, so check the official Facebook page before going. Entrance Fee: P200 (Adults); P150 (Kids 4ft below); FREE (Kids 2ft below). The rates include access to the swimming pools. Activities: P250-400 (Zipline 1-3); P350/head (ATV); P150/head (Wall Climbing); P250/head (Giant Swing); P250/head (Australian Rundown); P400/head (Paintball). You can also avail of the package options. Check the official Facebook page for the inclusions per package.

Top La Union Resorts and Hotels

If you wish to explore most of La Union, the town of San Juan and the city of San Fernando are the best areas for your base. Both are located at the center of the province. From either, you can easily reach most of the attractions listed above.

Urbiz Garden Bed and Breakfast

We stayed at Urbiz Garden , a beachfront bed-and-breakfast in Urbiztondo, San Juan. I always stay here because of its location, between the highway and the beach.

But if you’d rather stay at a hotel, hostel or resort, here are some of the top properties that can be booked via Agoda.

The ultimate 5 day roadtrip up north: baguio, sagada, la union, vigan.

Summer last year, boredom and the intense urge to travel got the best of Bobby (my significant other) and I. We were itching to escape the city, but the excitement of this gave us racing thoughts — we couldn’t decide where to go. So one day, while sipping on our iced coffee, we decided to finalize our out-of-town adventure. Our options included the following: spelunking in the caves of Sagada, indulging ourselves with Vigan’s historical prowess, basking under the hot summer sun in La Union, or enjoying the smell of pine trees in Baguio.

For a while, we contemplated and debated. Then, it struck us — what if we went to all four places? If you think about it, it doesn’t seem that hard planning a [more or less] two week trip to complete and fully experience all four places we had in mind.

However, we only had five days to go to all of the places. We had to be back in Manila in time for a family thing that we had to be at. The thought of going on a long roadtrip was awesome. But we had a day to plan a coherent itinerary, so we don’t miss out on anything.

Here’s how to go to Baguio, Sagada, La Union, Vigan, and back to Manila in 5 days!

DAY 1: BAGUIO

The Ultimate 5 Day Roadtrip Up North- Baguio, Sagada, La Union, Vigan 7

We left at 5:30 AM, and got to Baguio at around after lunch. We were lucky that our friend offered us a place at North Pine Transient Place for us to stay for the night (we only planned staying overnight before journeying to Sagada). Baguio is the go-to place of most Filipinos and tourists when they want to feel some cold summer breeze away from the city. It’s the most accessible one! Since Bobby has been to Baguio more times than I have, he was the one who showed me around, bringing me to places I had to see.

12:30 PM :   Had coffee at Camp John Hay. 01:30 PM :   Checked-in at North Pine Transient Place. 02:30 PM :  Devoured a scrumptious, healthy lunch at Oh My Gulay! 04:00 PM :   Ventured around the city proper on foot, even seeing their ukay-ukay street market by the lake. We even took a stroll at Burnham Park and enjoyed a short (but sweet) boat ride at night. 08:30 PM :   Had dinner and a few drinks at the 18BC Music Lounge while listening to the live acoustic band singing sweet melodies. 10:00 PM :   Headed over to Kape Umali for some more coffee lovin’, and a tour around their work place (since our friend owned it). 12:00 MN :   Went back to the lodging, and stayed for the night.

DAY 2: BAGUIO – SAGADA

The Ultimate 5 Day Roadtrip Up North- Baguio, Sagada, La Union, Vigan 3

We woke up at around 7:30 AM , fixed our things, and headed to our last stop at Baguio before heading to Sagada. I’ve been meaning to go to Ben Cab museum since a few years ago, but I never had the chance to travel there, nor did I know where it was. Luckily, Bobby took me to that incredible place. A lot of art, history, and creativity make that place admirable. We saw a variety of art —from woodcarvings, oil paintings, sculptures, and even those eccentric pieces that I [badly] wanted to take home.

We left at around 2:00 PM . Before this roadtrip, I had never gone to Sagada — I didn’t know how the roads going there would look like, how far it really was, and if I could take the constant twist and turns of the mountains we’d be going through. The car ride was very interesting. Going up, we experienced hail and a really thick fog, and, not to mention, (during those occurrences) seeing unfinished roads and lack of barriers/railings at the sides of the mountains. Luckily, Bobby was a good driver, and he’s been there more than once…which was enough for me to feel safe and secure.

The Ultimate 5 Day Roadtrip Up North- Baguio, Sagada, La Union, Vigan 2

We arrived at Sagada 6 hours later. I know it shouldn’t have taken that long from Baguio, but we were really careful making our way towards this magical place. I use the word “magical” for several reasons: I saw beautiful rivers and rice terraces on the way up. I was taken when I saw clouds that close to me…to the point that we were literally in the cloud. The sceneries we passed through were breath-taking. We even stopped over this little shack/bahay kubo where we had coffee, overlooking the beautifully made terraces.

08:00 PM :   Checked-in at Shamrock Tavern. 08:30 PM :   Ate at the well-recommended Yogurt House, which I devoured one of the healthiest, whole-tasting yogurts I’ve ever tried. 10:00 PM :   We walked around and ended up in Kimchi Place for a few drinks, and good rasta time; which, by the way, reminded me of a Bob Marley-inspired shop (they had a lot of art, and random things on the wall, plus it was cozy and I felt very hippie). 12:00 MN :    Went back to Shamrock Tavern to rest.

DAY 3: SAGADA

The Ultimate 5 Day Roadtrip Up North- Baguio, Sagada, La Union, Vigan 4

We started our day early because we wanted to make the most out of the one day we had there. So, here are the things we opted to do given the limited time we had there:

06:00 AM :   Woke up and prepared for the day’s adventure. 07:00 AM :   Had a scrumptious, healthy breakfast at Sagada Brew; where we were greeted by the smiles and positive attitude of the people there. 09:00 AM :   Trekked / hiked to find one of the hidden waterfalls there (but ended up getting lost). 11:00 AM :    Ate a quick lunch in town, looked for a tour guide to help us in our spelunking venture. 12:00 NN :   Toured around the hanging coffins, with a little history lesson from our tour guide. o1:00 PM :   Spelunking at the Sumaging Cave, and got a glimpse of the hanging coffins in the Lumiang Cave (never thought where you’re buried there actually had a meaning Those buried in one area were elders, one that were for men, and there was one for children, women, or the sickly ones). This took about four hours of our time, due to my fear of heights, the dark, and murky water. It was an overall fun experience, though, being covered in all sorts of things. The rock formations were surely worth it. 05:30 PM :   Went back to the tavern, and cleaned ourselves up before dinner. 07:00 PM :   Had a lovely, woodsy dinner and joined the bonfire at Rock Inn Café. Also had a few drinks and good conversations with the other visitors of that inn. 10:00 PM :   Returned to Shamrock Tavern to sleep (spelunking drained us, but it was a good kind of tired).

LA UNION TRAVEL GUIDE : DETAILED ITINERARY AND BUDGET FOR 3D/2N

baguio to la union trip

La Union Travel Guide : Detailed itinerary and budget for 3D/2N || More than surfing, explore the grape farm, visit a temple, swim in the pristine waterfalls of Elyu as you check out different food resto places, accommodation that is worth the stay. Check out this blog.

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

A laid back weekday as I learn how to surf, let the waves took me far and the striking sunset that made everything more perfect. More than this activity, an escapade to the Grape Farm, a soak in the falls, sight seeing on Temples, food binging plus a perfect hostel place to stay at made this Elyu Trip of mine, one of my favorite.

La Union known as the Surfing Capital of the north, located in the Ilocos Region of the Philippines.

La Union or “Elyu” has that sense of joy and fulfillment that even I can’t explain the feeling after my 3 days 2 night trip. It was really special and I had the sense of urgency to return back to this province.

In this blog, I’ll be sharing with you my itinerary for 3D/2N, sites to see, budget and full guide, resto and food choices to try out, the hostel where we stayed all for a chilling weekday vacation with two of my favorite office buddies.

HOW TO GO TO LA UNION FROM MANILA :

  • Booked ticket in advance via Partas Bus Line website  earliest schedule was at 5:30AM and paid thru my card (Debit Card is also possible for payment)
  • what is good about this, is you get to secure a sit for you in advance, also less the hassle in waiting for your bus on your way home
  • alight at San Juan Terminal (*or in my case, we alight in front of our accommodation area — Flotsam and Jetsam Hostel)
  • Tricycle is other mode of transportation in Elyu, so may ride one to take you at your accommodation area

HOW TO GO BACK TO MANILA FROM ELYU :

  • From Elyu, ride a tricycle and take you to Partas Bus Terminal (since we booked for 2 way we have reserved seats in the bus)
  • Bus normally passes thru San Juan bound to Manila on a regular basis so you may also want to wait for a bus home instead of advance booking

WHERE TO STAY IN ELYU?

  • There are actually many options to choose from in Elyu and it depends on your budget and convenience.
  • Chose Flotsam and Jetsam as it is widely known in Elyu, the place is very artsy, Bali feels and inspired, very comfortable and it is such a nice place to spend a vacation at.

FLOTSAM and JETSAM HOSTEL – in our case, I booked a private room for 3 person worth P1,133.00 per person per night. It might be somehow expensive but it comes with a free breakfast already. AC and it is a private room. F & J is famous of its hostel and bunk beds available for solo or budget travelers with a stay for as low as P600 – P800 pesos per night.

Detailed Post Here : Flotsam and Jetsam Hostel – An artsy place to stay in El Yu (La Union)

After a 6 hour bus ride all the way to Elyu, we immediately checked-in at Flotsam by 12nn (*lucky for us as it was not a peak season, and since I usually travel on a weekday I get this as a privilege *wink)

WHERE TO EAT IN ELYU?

A trip wouldn’t be complete without trying out the most sought resto places. Dining with your friends or travel buddies, and good thing that Elyu has so many food selections to choose from. So you and your buddies would never run out of choices depending on your cravings. All of this places were also very convenient to reach as you may just walk around or ride a tricycle for P10 per pax rate.

DAY 1 – LEARN HOW TO SURF IN URBIZTONDO

One thing that would make you wanna travel to Elyu is due to its Beach Area perfect for surfing. One on my list as I wanted to learn how to surf as well.

From Flotsam we rode a tricycle going to the beach area (Fare is P10 per person) you may just walk going to the beach area so it actually depends on you. Once in Urbiztondo, you’ll see a lot of instructors all over the place with a surfing board. You may approach one and ask for assistance.

Rates in Elyu for 1 hour usage of the surf board plus the basic training with the instructor is worth P400.00 // if you feel like you already know how to surf after an hour you may extend your surf board rental for additional P200.00 per hour.

Here’s the contact number of our instructor – Kuya  Alex 09554425678 you may text him or call him if you like.

I was amazed that after 3 tries I made to maintain my balance in the surf board, and it was pretty much fun than I expected.

FullSizeRender (83)

It was my first time to go on surfing and I love the experience, it seems scary at first but just make sure to listen to your instructor well and apply every part of it then you’re good .

Basically, our first day was spent by the beach and surfing.

Here’s our Day 1 Actual Expense in Elyu, please do take note that 2 way bus transfer and the 3 days accomm. stay is part of the expense below.

DAY 1 ELYU

DAY 2 – CITY TOUR IN ELYU

Stayed pretty much late on our first day as we enjoy our comforting bed and chitchat as we savor dinner. Early morning we rise up, seeking for a sumptuous breakfast as what F & J is also offering.

FullSizeRender (69)

Then we headed to the tricycle stand and barter for our plans for the entire day. Our tricycle agreed to bring us to all the land destination for the entire day for P1,200 pesos // this is good for 3 pax. There is actually no standard rate to date and you may ask and commute each site for yourself. However, it’ll be more efficient and convenient to have a service to join you as well the entire time.

Bauang Grape Farm

IMG_1460

From San Juan, we headed to Bauang in a tricycle for 30 – 45 minutes. There is Lomboy Grape Farm, Gapuz Grape Farm and more in the area however they have an entrance fee of P100 per person.

We headed at Orpilla-Estigo Grape Farm instead, as our trike driver knew the owners of the farm. You may enter for free, take photos with the Grape Farm, pick all you want and pay it after weighing it (price ranges from P250 – P350 pesos per kilo)

IMG_1406

I was so amazed when I discovered this place, who would have thought that a grape farm is available in the Philippines. I was pretty much happy when apart from the grapes they also do sell Grape Wine for only P100 per bottle.

We had the wine tasting and that made me bought 3 more bottles of the Grape Wine to bring it at home. It has low alcohol content but the longer it stays the better it’ll taste as per the locals.

Ma-cho Temple

On to our next site, is the Ma-cho Temple. Entrance is FREE! and it felt like China in La Union.

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Avoid making too much noise as it is still a temple of worship. After staying and roaming around for an hour, headed to our next destination.

IMG_1555

Occallong Falls

Visited Occallong Falls in Luna, it was roughly more than an hour of tricycle ride from San Juan. There is an entrance fee of P10 pesos per person.

FullSizeRender (71)

What is good about this falls is you may have the entire place for yourself. Swim all you want in fresh water and savor its cold pristine water.

FullSizeRender (72)

Bahay na Bato

Same way back to San Juan, you’ll be passing thru Bahay na Bato but be sure to make it before 6PM as it closes already by that time.

It was named Bahay na Bato as everything is literally surrounded and made of “Bato” or Rocks. All of which were pretty fine and it seems that the locals use it as a form of living.

IMG_1703

We decided to watch over the sunset here in Bahay na Bato. It was definitely so quiet and very relaxing. Please take note that swimming is not allowed in this area as it is dangerous.

Here’s the summary of expense on our Day 2. From the agreed P1200 pesos of trike ride we added additional P200 pesos to our driver as he serves as our guide during the entire trip as well.

DAY 2 ELYU

DAY 3 – BOUND HOME

As for our last day in Elyu, we initially planned to visit the beach once again, however, F & J was really comforting to stay for the entire morning, after our heavy breakfast prepared for our stuff and headed for check-out by 12NN.

We then passes thru a Coffee Shop and had our lunch before heading back home to Manila.

DAY 3 ELYU

Here’s the summary of our full expense for 3D/2N in Elyu. Please take note that all expense here is based on my personal trip. You may save on food if you want to skip the resto houses, or opt for a non-AC room to save on accommodation. If you have a bigger group to join the trip could be more cost-efficient as well as you get to divide the expense more.

SUMMARY OF EXPENSE ELYU

As a whole, I totally enjoyed this Elyu Trip!! It was fun-filled with everything. And it was nice to have for 3 Days so you don’t feel tired after the trip. I was energized and was pretty happy with every part of our itinerary.

  • They say it’s the new Boracay as it is a perfect go-to place
  • Restaurants were everywhere and you may check each to try out based on your preference
  • it was relatively cheap in Elyu, but it depends on how you’ll manage your itinerary
  • my itinerary may just serve as a guide for your next trip 🙂

Looking forward to spend more vacation leaves in Elyu!!!! Surely be back in this province ❤

This place seems reasonable in terms of cost. I have not been to Phil yey but I have always wanted to visit Cebu. Let me see if La Union can be added when I actually get to travel. Thanks for this post and looks like you had a great time 🙂

yes 🙂 consider it also in your travel in the Philippines.

Man Cho Temple sounds fascinating – I assume it is a Chinese temple or is it a Buddhist Temple?

It is a chinese temple 🙂

Wow!! Occallong Falls looks amazing!! Definitely will come back to this itinerary if we ever travel to the Philippines.

yes 🙂 worth the visit.

Awesome Elyu guide! Didn’t realize there was so much to see in La Union — I only went to the beach area last time. Love your photos in the grape farm!

Same thoughts, not until I came across other tourist destination to look out for at Elyu.

Thanks so much for sharing this is very informative. I had never heard of La Union. So many cool places to visit in the Philippines. I think it looks like a great place for a first surf lesson. A swim in Occallong Falls also sounds perfect. The sunset at Bahay na Bato looks spectacular.

HI Cindy, yes indeed the Philippines is rich with so many destinations to look after too. And La Union was really perfect for first time surfers too.

Looks like you had a great time at La Union! I never tried surfing (even though I lived near surfing beaches for many years). This place looks ideal to pick it up though! And I really liked the look of these temples. What really impressed me was that you keep track of your expenses in an Excel spreadsheet. That’s a very clever approach and a technique that will serve you well throughout your life. Well done!

try surfing! it was just a first time but it was such a great experience. And yeah, always keep an excel file with me just to remind me of future plans as well 😀

Surf and turf is a winning combination for a relaxing holiday. And all within a very reasonable budget too. I noticed that you mentioned tricycle as a transport..how cute that would be!

yes 🙂 tricycle is famously used in the Philippines 🙂 its small but can take you to places 😀

As a non surfer I’d never heard of La Union, but it looks like so much fun even for someone like me. I love Occallong Falls, I’m a sucker for natural beauty like this Your hostel looked pretty comfortable too, and the whole budget was reasonable – one to add to the list!

Thanks a lot for such an extensive post. So many little details in these photographs! Surfing is always great but these vineyards, and food, everything looks exotic. I also liked the little details in decor such as the traditional umbrellas dangling from the roof.

I love that tricycles are a mode of transportation. It’s such a unique thing in comparison to bicycles. My daughters love the beach and have tried surfing once or twice so I’m sure they would love Urbiztondo. The Occallong Falls look splendid. I will definitely be saving away your itinerary. We plan on visiting the Philippines.

La Union sounds like the perfect place to learn to surf. Any that long board, very cool.

Love the whimsical umbrellas at the hostel, they add a lovely splash of interest. The grape farm would have been so much fun.

This made me miss LU even more! Good read ❤

Yessss :))) I always missed LU as well 😦

This post is really helpful! Planning to go there by the end of this month. Thanks for this!

happy to help ❤ hope you enjoyed it as much as I do!!! ❤

Looks like such a fun place to visit! Your photos are all so dreamy! Thanks for sharing. Hope someday i’ll visit La Union.

The union was created for their mutual need for protection from pirates and headhunters!

Although mostly destroyed due to an earthquake, Pindangan church is still a brilliant display of architectural design. The remaining structure is now overgrown with wildflowers and moss but yet still stands as a reminder to the people here of how it brought two villages together creating peace and safety.

12.30 pm – Ma-Cho Temple

Ma Cho Temple

Continuing the first day in La Union with this incredibly cultural and significant Taoist Temple! The Ma-Cho temple stands as a living tribute to the Confluence of the Filipino-Chinese Culture.

The temple was named after a legendary Chinese deity named Ma-Cho, she was born in 960 AD during the Sung Dynasty.  It is said that she never cried a single tear during her entire first month of life, that is how she earned the name “Mo”, which translates to“keeping silent”.

Afterwards, head over to Halo Halo de Iloko for some delicious traditional desserts for lunch, which is only a 10 minute walk away.

Ma-Cho was very intelligent, said to have a photographic memory, and blessed with healing powers! At the age of ten, she became a monk. An unusual story indeed for a little girl! She was able to accurately predict the tides and weather conditions of the sea, thus dubbed the ‘goddess of the sea’

This temple is different from all the other temples you will find in Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan, as it is the biggest temple in the world outside of China! The Ma Cho Temple believed to be one of the very few Chinese temples that have been built with five archways.

An entire hectare of sheer beauty and rich history all wrapped up in a gorgeous Taoist temple!

Poro Point

One of the best places for sunset, Paro Point is a beautiful place to spend a long afternoon admiring the scenery. Enjoy the lush landscape as you walk alongside cliffs that drop into the West Philippine Sea.

Keep your eyes peeled for the various birds that call the cliffs of Paro Point home. This rugged limestone dates back to one of the ice ages! The Filipino government even set up an economic zone here on Paro Point to keep this area pristine.

The Poro Point Lighthouse was originally built in 1905 during the American occupation and although it does not have a traditional lantern to warn sailors the lighthouse has a reflective glass plane 107 feet wide that helps illuminate two electrical flashes every 10 seconds for warnings.

Insider Tip: Unfortunately, you will have to admire the lighthouse from afar. Being an active military base it is not open to tourists.

A short 20-minute Jeep or tricycle ride from town to the Tangadan Falls near San Gabriel, is a great start to your adventurous day. 07.00 am – Balay Anito Falls

The last day of my itinerary will start bright and early with another waterfall adventure. Make sure to bring a pair of solid shoes as well so you can hit some hidden tracks.

One-of-a-kind trekking and swimming await you at the Balay Anito Falls, one of the most mysterious and astoundingly beautiful tropical paradises that the La Union offers. 10.00 am – St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish

St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish

Stylized in design, well known and respected stopping by this church is a great step into Catholic history of the Philippines.

St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish in La Union is more than just a church it is also home to the sacred shrine of Our Lady of Namacpacan, the Virgin Mary. Over the years a few miracles have been attributed to this 6 feet tall image of the Virgin Mary, which has now been canonized by the church.

  • How long should I stay here?  30-45min
  • Getting there –  40min drive from the previous spot

10.45 am – Baluarte Watch Tower

Baluarte Watch Tower

Otherwise known as, the ‘leaning tower of Luna’, the Baluarte Watch Tower is a significant tourist attraction as well as one of the most important historical La Union landmarks. The overall setting may be quite unexciting, as it is a relatively small structure set on the coastline, but when you understand the history and meaning behind the structure, it will come alive with magic!

The Luna watch tower denotes the town’s great past and was originally built during the pre-Spanish era as a strategic lookout point for impending attack from aggressive pirates or other dangerous attackers. Just like a guardian angel looking over its community and the lives of the people, this ancient structure has served its purpose very well countless times in Luna’s past.

Now the watchtower stands in disrepair. Today, the mighty landmark sits on the famous pebble beach of Luna, and although it has been damaged by weather and time, it is still a sight to behold!

  • Getting there –  a short walk or 4min drive from the previous spot

12.00 pm – 3D Art Gallery and Bahay Na Bato Souvenir Shop

An essential part of any La Union Trip Itinerary is a visit to the arts.

The 3-D gallery and souvenir shop show off all the incredible locally made artworks and sculptures. Most which are created from rocks and wood, designed into creative shapes.

The souvenir shop also offers some snacks and refreshments, which is the perfect recharge before heading to the next stop. The Gallery is right next to the sea, so you can spend a little while enjoying your food while admiring the crystal blue water.

  • Cost –  30 PHP
  • How long should I stay here?  45-60min
  • Getting there –  10min drive from the previous spot

1.30 pm – Occalong Falls

There are so many waterfalls around La Union, that I had to include another one in the itinerary! Visiting here is a chance to refresh yourself after a morning of adventuring by dipping into the cool waters of the Occalong Falls. It’s a beautiful spot in nature with not many tourists. There are plenty of options to climb, explore and relax. Let out your inner animal as you venture through the jungle and find yourself in the awe-inspiring and stunning environment of the Occalong Falls.

This is a perfect place to lay back and enjoy the day, soaking in the vitamin D and breathing in that fresh tropical air during your trip to La Union. You can visit the Occalong Falls on your own or get a guide that will show you some hidden paths to explore.

  • Cost –  10 PHP
  • Getting there –  It’s a 20min Jeep ride

3.00pm until late – San Juan Beach

San Juan Beach

As the last stop on my 3 Day La Union Itinerary, I offer you the opportunity to kick your feet up, or go for a short swim and enjoy a nice beachy sunset.

San Juan Beach is pretty busy during the day, but it normally gets a bit quieter once the strong afternoon sun is gone. Grab a drink and a beanbag and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets while watching surfers rip one wave after another. It’s the perfect way to end an adventurous La Union Day 3.

If you love beaches, you will also love the nearby Urbiztondo beach, which is fantastic for surfing and chilling out in beach bars until sunset.

  • How long should I stay here?  Open end!
  • Getting there –  13min drive from San Fernado La Union

Active Roots Security Belt

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

when to visit La Union

The weather in La Union is some of the best in the Philippines. Rain season still happens but it is not as intense as other areas. La Union has more of an arid climate meaning the forecast is sunshine with a chance of more sunshine.

There’s really no “bad time” to visit la Union, as the weather is one of the most stable ones in all of Asia. However, there are some months that differ, especially looking at the humidity levels.

If you’re after the hotter months, March until July will be the perfect time to visit. If you want to wear a pair of nice jeans every once in a while, you should opt for December to February, as these are the least humid months – but it’s still quite hot.

December and January are the peak months for surfers and tourists, which also means inflated prices and booked out accommodations.

la union itinerary

La Union bus terminals are scattered everywhere, and it is the easiest and most direct way to get from point A to Point B in this fascinating region. La Union bus fare is super reasonable, so you won’t be paying out your ears if you’re backpacking the Philippines ! The buses are always on time and provide a smooth ride, you can also expect to make a few friends along the way to where you’re going!

You can hire out a car or bike to get around, which is relatively inexpensive and allows you to work on your own time. Cruising the streets is a fun activity in itself, as La Union’s towns are all full of grand places and wonderful architecture.

Taxis can also be found, so you can also hire out a driver for the day or just for one trip. The locals are friendly and the chances are you will learn something new from your driver about La Union. If you’re wanting to experience a more cultural mode of transportation than the habal-habal (motorized taxi ) are the best way to indulge.

Walking around is a lovely way to see the cities and enjoy the laid back atmosphere of La Union, provided you aren’t going to walk too far. The beach is more often than not only a few steps away!

The Philippines is less conservative than its neighbouring countries of Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan when it comes to clothing. As tourism grows and island hopping and beach parties continue, the dress code is turning more towards the western style you might be used to. However, venturing into the less tourist and rural areas it is best to dress more conservatively.

Avoid wearing all black; it’s considered a mourning colour, but black in the heat of the sun wouldn’t be my first choice anyway… If you are going to visit churches and temples make sure your shoulders, cleavage and knees are covered, otherwise, your  packing for the Philippines  should definitely be light and breathable.

La Union is generally considered very safe for tourists. If you take a cab, check the driver’s ID to make sure they are legit. If you drink alcohol, try to behave yourself as local culture does not look kindly on boisterousness.

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for La Union

You can’t always plan for everything. But if you have good travel insurance , you’re setting yourself up well.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

Hi 🙂 Thanks for the great details and recommendations in your article! I’d love to go right now but I need to know the requirements to be allowed entry to La Union coming from Metro Manila: clearances from local governments (mine and there), health declaration, RT-PCR tests, quarantine, etc. Do you have the most current info available? If I have a driver drop me off only (he’s not staying w me) and turn around, will the driver be allowed to enter the province as well and same as pick-up after a 5-day (approx) stay? Thanks and cheers!

Hi Ariel, No matter where you wish to travel at present I strongly advise you check directly with immigration authorities of that particularly country/area. Only they will be able to give you the most up to date information on procedure and entry requirements.
