Quantum Of The Seas Itineraries

Quantum of the seas review, review of quantum of the seas.

The 2014-built Quantum of the Seas is the first Quantum-class Royal Caribbean vessel, with sisterships Anthem OTS (2015) and Ovation OTS (2016). Similarly designed are the "Quantum-Ultra Class" Spectrum OTS (2019) and Odyssey OTS (2020).

The vessel (IMO number 9549463) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311000267) and registered in Nassau .

Next is shown a Quantum-class ship as looked from above.

History - construction and ownership

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is a US company, trademarked brand and subsidiary owned by Royal Caribbean Group (RCG/shipowner). RCI was established in 1968 and currently has over 1/5 of the worldwide cruise market. RCI also has RCG's largest fleet by both vessel number and GT tonnage (ship sizes and capacities).

All RCI liners have names ending with "of the Seas".

Royal Caribbean Quantum-class ships - NorthStar

The 4200-passenger ship Quantum OTS is a next-generation Quantum Class ship. The new class of ships was known in the past under the name "Project Sunshine". The Quantum-Class is larger than the earlier Freedom by 13,000 GT. With these new dimensions, the class became the second largest in the fleet of the cruise company after the Oasis class.

Quantum OTS also has RCI's Virtual Balcony Interior cabins (with floor-ceiling 4K UHD screens that receive real-time video streaming from the ship's outside cameras). Itineraries

Quantum of the Seas itinerary program is based on 4- and 5-day short Asia roundtrip cruises from Shanghai and Hong Kong . During her Inaugural season, Quantum operated on Caribbean voyages out of Bayonne (Cape Liberty) New Jersey.

During winter 2019-2020 (November through April) the Quantum ship was homeported in Singapore for a total of 34 itineraries to Penang Malaysia , Phuket Thailand and Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon Vietnam . This deployment increased the Royal Caribbean's passenger capacity in Singapore by 30%.

Starting on December 1, 2020, the homeported in Singapore Quantum OTS became RCI's ever-first ship in operation since the fleet pause on March 14. The season (later extended through February 2022/14 months) had scheduled only Cruises to Nowhere (2-3-4-night "Ocean Getaways"/roundtrips) available for Singapore residents only and with no call ports along the route. The liner's max passenger capacity (4819) was limited to just 1000.

During summer 2021 (May through September), RCI planned to deploy Quantum OTS in Alaska - joining there the fleetmate Ovation OTS . Both liners were scheduled to operate 7-night roundtrips from homeport Seattle WA (leaving on Mondays). RCI's Alaskan season 2021 also had itineraries planned for Radiance OTS and Serenade OTS - both homeported in Vancouver BC and Seward AK (7-night one-ways). However, in late-January, RCI canceled Quantum's Alaskan 2021 season (April 25 through October 14) and the ship remained in Southeast Asia. Ovation-Serenade-Radiance ships' Alaskan schedules remained unchanged.

Following Ovation OTS , Quantum OTS became the second RCI vessel deployed in Australia (season 2022-2023). Quantum's inaugural Australian season (Nov 1, 2022, thru April 12, 2023) was based on homeporting in Brisbane QLD , and 6- to 10-day roundtrips visiting NSW (Sydney), Tasmania (Hobart), Queensland (Airlie Beach, Yorkeys Knob, Willis Island), South Pacific island ports in New Caledonia and Vanuatu, as well as 2-night/3-day Samplers ( cruises to nowhere ).

In November 2025, Quantum OTS starts homeporting in Los Angeles (joining the fleetmate Navigator OTS ) to operate 3- to 6-day roundtrips to Baja Mexico. Quantum's 2025-2026 season (October 2 through April 21) grouped 11 different itineraries and a total of 44 departures out of LA. Cabo San Lucas is visited for a 2-day/overnight stay.

Quantum Of The Seas Wiki

On February 11, 2011, under “Project Sunshine”, the shipowner RCCL announced the order of a new vessel. It represents a new passenger ship class of all three units, the first of which (Quantum) was delivered in 2014. On February 29, 2012, RCCL announced the order of the second “Sunshine” ship – Anthem (launched in 2015).

On January 31, 2013, the new vessel class was officially named “Quantum Class”. On this day were also officially announced the names of the first two vessels – Quantum and the Anthem OTS. The third vessel of this class (Ovation) was scheduled for launch in April 2016.

Quantum OTS is Royal Caribbean's first Quantum-class vessel, with "WOW" sisterships Anthem of the Seas  (2015) and Ovation of the Seas  (2016). There is a possibility the RCCL cruise company to order a fourth Quantum-class ship, as such an option was included in the contract.

Ship's godmother is Kristin Dawn Chenoweth (1968-bornUS actress and singer). It was delivered to RCI on October 28, 2014. Quantum OTS was initially homeported at Bayonne's Port Cape Liberty (New Jersey) . The Inaugural Cruise (maiden voyage) was on November 2, 2014. The itinerary was a Transatlantic crossing from the UK to USA (Southampton to NYC / Bayonne NJ). In 2016, Quantum was homeported in Shanghai China  for roundtrips to ports in Japan and South Korea,

Quantum OTS refurbishment 2019 review

The ship's first  drydock refurbishment  was in 2019 (October 19 - November 16) done in  Singapore  (at Sembcorp Marine Shipyard). The USD 65 million drydocking project included general maintenance works, technical overhauls, refreshed interiors and new attractions. Deckplan changes include adding two new team gaming experiences - a Laser Tag and an Escape Room.

  • vessel width: 162 ft (49 m), waterline width 136 ft (41 m)
  • virtual balcony's LED screen is 80-inch 4K (ultra high-definition)
  • jogging track length 436 ft (133 m)
  • North Star's height is 300 ft (92 m) and turns every 15 min.
  • SeaPlex' bumper cars are 15
  • On each voyage, the ship is loaded with fresh fruit (25 tons), fresh vegetables (36 tons), fish (10 tons), eggs (79,000), still water (22,200 L), sparkling water (12,000 L).
  • In the vessel's construction were used 37,000 tons of steel, 346 tons of glass. It took 41,600 man hours to build it.
  • Engines/power: two Wartsila diesel (type 12V46F, power output 14400 kW each), two Wartsila diesel (type 16V46F, power output 19200 kW each), two Caterpillar engines (type 3516C HD (power output 2500 kW each)
  • Diesel-electric propulsion: two ABB thrusters (type Azipod XO, power output 20,5 MW each), plus four Brunvoll bow thrusters (type FU115, power output 3500 kW each)
  • A signature feature of the vessel is the top-deck located giant Polar Bear statue (named Felicia).

All Quantum-class liners don't have the top-deck Viking Crown observation lounge and the ice skating rink. There are also differences in the Royal Promenade (shopping mall area). Entertainment options are brand new, with many "firsts at sea" present in the line's brochures.

The list of ship's revolutionary new (WOW) features includes:

  • "virtual balcony cabins" - all the Inside cabins feature a floor-ceiling 80-inch HDTV screen (203-cm) for real-time views (live camera feed showing the passing scenery). All Quantum cabins are ~9% larger than on Oasis-class ships.
  • Bionic Bar (capacity 2 drinks per minute) uses 2 robotic arms to prepare mixed beverages (muddled, stirred, shaken and strained). Those can be ordered via an app (tablets or smartphones). Orders are displayed on large LED screens around the bar. The robotic bartenders use 30 different spirits and 21 mixers (8 sodas, 6 juices, 3 syrups, sugar, mint, limes, lemons).
  • Two70° (located decks 5-7 stern, 3-story-high with a 270° panoramic view) - this lounge includes a cafe, an ice bar, at night it becomes a venue for nouveau-cirque-style production and a disco club.
  • SeaPlex complex (deck 15 mid) - full-size basketball court, a roller-skating sports arena, bumper cars, table tennis, "food truck" (casual dining).
  • "RipCord by iFLY" - it's the RCCL's new skydiving simulator (reservations to be made online prior to sailing).
  • "NorthStar" - the sensational and absolutely complimentary observation tower (forward of the top deck) - a glass-walled capsule on a long rotating arm will lift small groups of passengers over the ship's edge (up to 300ft/91m above sea level).

A Meatball at Sea

For the May 2024 issue, Gary Shteyngart spent seven nights aboard the biggest cruise ship that has ever sailed.

I’ve never written a letter to the editor before, but rare are the times I’ve read an article more hilarious, brilliant, and incisive than Gary Shteyngart’s on his escapades at sea. I was moved, entertained, and wowed by his keen observations. But mostly I’m grateful to him for reinforcing a promise I made to myself: I will never, ever go on a cruise.

Jennifer Ripley Menlo Park, Calif.

I laughed out loud several times while reading Gary Shteyngart’s account of his experience on the inaugural voyage of the Icon of the Seas. As someone passionate about cruising, I recognized the truth in much of what Shteyngart wrote. I’m also a travel agent, and the thought of sailing on the Icon fills me with dread. So many people! I tell my clients that cruising is for everyone, but not all cruise lines are for everyone.

There are a few aspects of cruising that I think the author missed, though. My son is a full-time wheelchair user and an avid cruiser. It’s hard to imagine how he would see the world if not on a cruise ship. On today’s modern, accessible vessels, the indignities that he and other people with disabilities might suffer every day at home are largely absent.

We love cruising because of the staff. The pride and care that crew members take in providing excellent service is evident. We love to ask about their family at home, and we tip them generously. We hope that Shteyngart did the same.

Kathleen Moylan Worcester, Mass.

Once upon a time, I was a travel writer. As someone who still revels in the wonder of travel 15 years after leaving the field, I found Gary Shteyngart’s article about the Icon of the Seas disappointing. Travel writing as an artistic form has been in jeopardy for years, and I fear that articles like Shteyngart’s demonstrate why.

Travel writing doesn’t have to follow well-worn formats or cast its subjects in a favorable light. But it should create a sense of place. No travel writer worth their salt would ever wallow in misery and disdain, as Shteyngart does here. A travel writer shouldn’t judge those around them or put themselves at the center of the story; the job of a travel writer is to look at an experience and see its value. When I worked as a travel writer, if I ever found myself in an experience I disliked, I tried to understand why others around me enjoyed it and then worked to reconcile those two perspectives.

We travel writers are a specific brood. We have internalized that our work is not about us. We know we are guests in the places we visit. There is a degree of respect that a travel writer must have if they hope to see a place clearly. Those have to be table stakes.

Kim Palacios San Ramon, Calif.

It is disconcerting that, only four months after The Atlantic devoted an entire issue to the dangers of a second Donald Trump presidency, the magazine published a story that seems designed to confirm the central argument of Trump’s political movement: that blue-state elites despise ordinary Americans and see no value in their way of life. Like Trump’s speeches, Gary Shteyngart’s humor is littered with name-calling and childish insults; the “reprobates” and “bent psychos” who spend their money on cruises are mocked for their weight, their clothes, their hobbies, their tattoos. Despite the fact that some of these “psychos” are, as Shteyngart notes, veterans who have served their country, he concludes that his fellow cruisers have no “interior life” and are thus unworthy of attention from a member of the “creative class” like himself. If Trump is reelected in November, part of the blame will lie with those, like Shteyngart, who seem to have retreated so far into their progressive bubbles that they have become the mirror image of the MAGA faithful.

Andrew Miller New Orleans, La.

Gary Shteyngart’s colorful essay from the world’s largest cruise ship makes snobbery an art form. What did he expect? Cruise-ship builders take chunks of Las Vegas, Branson, and Disney and put them on a platform that moves through the water. Never have I entertained the idea of taking a trip on one, but thousands of Americans do it regularly, most of them solidly middle-class in wealth and taste. Most Americans would prefer to watch the Mets play the Marlins than the Met play Mozart.

During my cruising years—on the Navy’s big gray ships, in the 1960s—officers and crews were a mix of Americans from everywhere and every social strata. One chief petty officer was an outspoken socialist; one of my commanding officers was a paranoid member of the John Birch Society. The crews of the ships I served on joined the middle class upon discharge, and some of them probably cruise and talk football and eat bad food and vote for Donald Trump. What a shame that Shteyngart couldn’t connect with them. He might have learned something. I did.

Earl Higgins River Ridge, La.

Gary Shteyngart replies:

What fascinated me most about my fellow cruisers—many of whom were from blue states and were not MAGA diehards—was their lack of curiosity. They were more than happy to eat food that reminded me of a Yalta cafeteria in my Soviet youth. They laughed themselves silly when a comedian made fun of “shithole countries” (although the African woman and her husband next to me walked out). To Andrew Miller’s point, I think it is precisely this kind of passivity and incuriosity that lets a nation forgo its long tradition of democracy and, through either malice or inaction, allow a tyrant to take charge. To Earl Higgins’s comment, I tried to connect desperately, almost pathologically, with my fellow cruisers. Sadly, there was not one outspoken socialist or paranoid member of the John Birch Society to be found. Indeed, it was the blinkered blandness of my fellow cruisers that drove me to despair. In the end, I began to respect the alcoholics and degenerate gamblers I met. They, at least, had a story to tell.

A Study in Senate Cowardice

Republicans like Rob Portman could have ended Donald Trump’s political career, Jeffrey Goldberg wrote in The Atlantic ’s May 2024 issue. They chose not to.

Good journalism should make its audience angry. And Jeffrey Goldberg’s detailing of the rank hypocrisy of the Republican senators who talked tough but folded like cheap suits when it came time to vote to convict Donald Trump for his role in the January 6 insurrection should incite anger in every reader who cares about this country.

Particularly fitting is Goldberg’s word choice about their behavior— pathetic , greasy . I hope history remembers and repeats the names of those senators who could have stopped a threat to democracy and decency but instead caved to Trump.

Steve Schild Winona, Minn.

Jeffrey Goldberg’s article holding certain Republican senators to account makes a valid point. However, it is easy to picture the current GOP leadership retaliating with baseless impeachment proceedings against their opposition, setting a destructive precedent that could undermine and diminish the United States. Goldberg calls that argument “pathetic,” but probably some of those senators who voted nay believed Trumpism would eventually pass; they followed the rule of law and looked ahead hopefully to a future generation of quality leaders for whom the nation would matter more than any individual.

Behind the Cover

In this issue’s cover story, “ The Valley ,” George Packer reports from Phoenix and the surrounding Salt River Valley. Packer argues that the Valley’s problems—climate change, conspiracism, hyper-partisanship—are America’s, and that its fate may presage the nation’s. The cover evokes a landscape that is getting hotter and drier, and a future that is blurry. This is a place where American optimism and ingenuity are being put to the test.

Corrections

“Democracy Is Losing the Propaganda War” (June) misstated the subtitle of Anne Applebaum’s latest book. The full title is Autocracy, Inc.: The Dictators Who Want to Run the World . “The Great Serengeti Land Grab” (May) misstated the distance between Sharjah Safari park and the Pololeti Game Reserve. The Sharjah Safari park is 2,000 miles northeast of the Pololeti Game Reserve, not 5,000 miles north. “Clash of the Patriarchs” (May) mischaracterized Roman Emperor Constantine’s policy toward Christianity. Although Constantine favored Christianity over other tolerated religions in the empire, he did not impose it on his subjects.
