The first thing that one should know before planning a trip to Araku is how to get here. All three options (railways, roadways, and airways) are available but not directly. To reach Araku the only convenient way is to reach through Vizag that is 115 km away. Trains will be the best way to get here while airways will help you reach quickly but you will have to shell out more.

As said above, there’s not direct connectivity from Mumbai , Delhi , Kolkata and other prominent cities in India to Araku. However, the neighboring city, Vizag, is a prime Indian city that’s extremely well-connected with all major cities in India. From Vizag, 3 direct trains run between Araku and Vizag and take about 3 hours to complete the train journey. They run daily and provide a stunning view as they pass through several tunnels and valleys. Don’t forget to click memorable pics of your train journey to Araku from Vizag.

Even by road, you’ll have to reach Araku through Vizag. APTDC and some private bus operators run buses but the frequency cannot be relied upon. The majority of tourists prefer hiring a cab from Vizag and riding for 3 hours to reach Araku. We suggest the same as you get a perfect opportunity to click some amazing pictures of your journey. The roads are well-maintained but have sharp turns. Therefore, exercise caution if you’re self-driving.

There isn’t any airport in Araku, so the nearest airport is at Visakhapatnam . It operates both international and domestic flights. So you can get down at Visakhapatnam airport from anywhere in India or from abroad. Araku is some 120 km away from Vizag airport. So you can prebook a cab or after getting down at the airport. A 3-hour ride to Araku from Vizag can be stunning because of the view and pleasant climate. So check online and get your tickets booked to Vizag from your city.

Getting Around:

Being a hill station, public transport is not that developed. So don’t rely on them. To visit the tourist spots in Araku, the best option is to hire a cab. There are several local auto-rickshaws available at the Araku railway station but they usually demand more. That doesn’t mean you have to accept what they offer, negotiate and strike a deal that works best for you. Hire a cab for the day and avoid the hustle of transportation, roam freely, and just admire what Araku is famous for.

Araku Valley: India’s Backpacker Paradise

Tyda station near Araku Valley

Located about 120 kilometers from Visakhapatnam, Araku Valley is a pristine hill station located in Andhra Pradesh. It is a major draw for the tourists because of its natural beauty. The best time to visit the valley is between November and February. However, the tourists start flocking there right after the monsoon as the entire valley comes to life after a spell of rains. Away from the hustle and bustle of urban life, its peacefulness beckons many a weary traveler in India .

Araku Valley

India is a land of natural beauty known for its lush green forests, breathtaking mountains, magnificent valleys and some major rivers. The Araku Valley is one of such locations that is treasured by nature lovers and trekkers. It is surrounded by stunning waterfalls, verdant green fields, and gushing streams. The heartening landscapes of Araku exude a sense of scenic charm that attracts tourists from India and the rest of the world. Araku is also renowned for its coffee plantations and rich cultural heritage.

Nestled in the Eastern Ghats, Araku is reminiscent of its centuries-old heritage. The interior region of Araku still follows the lifestyle of its ancient tribes. The locals also tend to show great courtesy towards the visitors. While visiting the valley, Borra Caves should absolutely top your travel checklist. Located at a height of 800-1300 meters from sea level. The unparalleled beauty of the stalactites and stalagmites is further enhanced by the thematic lighting, intoxicating the sensibilities of tourists.

Sangda Waterfalls are also a sort of visual delight that should not be missed. The sound of gushing waterfalls in the deep silence of the environs plays like a symphony, soothing to the soul. On the other hand, the Tribal Museum in Araku Valley is a treat for people who want to explore the culture and heritage of the region. Filled with clay ornaments, the Tribal Museum mirrors the lifestyle and culture of the local people and also acts as a source of income for them.

The Padmapuram Botanical Gardens is another striking wonder in Araku Valley, brimming with intriguing spots that one can only come across in fairytales. It was initially created to help the soldiers in World War II obtain ample vegetation. However, over the turn of several decades, it has become widely familiar for nurturing rare yet exotic species of flowers along with vegetables. Not to forget, Araku Valley’s sightseeing remains incomplete without visiting the aromatic coffee plantations spread over several acres of land. The most frequently visited coffee plantation of the region is in the Ananthagiri Hills.

When planning to visit Araku Valley, people are often confronted with a dilemma of visiting by rail or road. According to the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department in Visakhapatnam, the meditative journey to the valley is most fruitful when one travels by both rail and road. How soon are you going to travel to Araku?

Later by 1954 he opened a Coffee house with a Coffee Museum.

Till recently this coffee museum was open only to foreign delegates and coffee traders, however now it is open to all Indians too.

Open throughout the year, this museum staff is also tribal folks who are also coffee growers themselves.

It offers educational entertainment in the form of the dioramas detailing the history of coffee and a Dhimsa Dance at six in the evening, every day .

The special attraction here is tree top huts, which means huts built on trees, however I couldn’t find them anywhere in garden. Finally after coming out of garden I asked to the STAFF there and they told that now the wooden huts on Trees called as TREE HOUSE are damaged and destroyed due to heavy rains. (As on August 2021)

The garden is spread over 26 acres, having variety of flowers, plants and trees as well as a rose garden.

There is a beautiful statue of Shiva-Parvati and dinosaur replicas liked by children .

A toy train for children is not operated due to Covid norms .

So if you want to relax and love nature this Padampuram garden of Araku is the best place to spend an hour or two.

History of Padampuram garden

This garden was started during World War II to produce vegetables and fruits etc. for the soldiers. which later turned  into a beautiful garden.

I suggest you to park your car near to the school and then trek to reach this waterfalls. The route is scenic and beautiful with lush green valley views around, so you will really enjoy the trek.

NOTE – Although you can see nice cement road after the school, do not take right turn after the school and go till the waterfall, since the road is so narrow that it will sweat you to take U-turn!!!

Visakhapatnam, is very proud of its ‘Araku Coffee’.

As soon as I reached Vizag city, I could see restaurants, coffee shops, food stalls selling the world-famous ‘Organic Araku Coffee’.

The origin of this award-winning coffee lies in the lush hills of Andhra’s reserve forest areas at an altitude of nearly 1000 metres above sea level, the roads are dotted with coffee plants and pepper creepers on either sides.

Borra Caves are formed as a result of the flow of Gosthani River on the limestone deposits.

I was astonished by the breathtaking stalactite and stalagmite formations such as Shiva-Parvathi, Rishi’s Beard, Mother-Child, Crocodile, Human Brain, Tiger and Cows udder.

And let me tell you that Borra caves are far bigger and better than Batu caves in Malysia . Only our efforts of marketing are very less and hence we don’t see crowd in thousands here as you can see in Malysia.

Borra Caves are one of the largest caves of the country which are Located in the Ananthagiri mandal of the Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh

Discovered by William King George of the Geological Survey of India, these one million year old caves attract huge number of tourists every day.

Located at an elevation of 1400 m above sea level, these beautiful caves are simply marval of nature and a must visit place.

As you can see in my video that the guide is telling about legend regarding the discovery of the caves, where he says that Borra caves were discovered when a cowherd while searching for his lost cow came across these caves. He found a Shiva Lingam inside the cave and believed that Lord Shiva has saved his cow.

The tribals have built a small temple outside the cave which is visited by the people coming here.

The name of the falls is derived from the name of the village Katiki.

The pond at the bottom of the waterfall is an excellent place for taking a bath after a tough trek to the place.

You have option to trek here from railway track (FREE of cost)or come here by Jeep by spending 1500 Rs for 8 persons.

Cooking and camping are also permitted at this place .

Travel guide: The two ways to cover the distance from Vizag to Araku

vizag to araku distance

Araku is one of the prominent reasons why a lot of tourists come to Vizag. This popular hill station is nearly 100 km from Vizag and is easily accessible. The people of Vizag love this place as an ideal weekend getaway since they can reach there within 4 hours. But not many realise that the journey from Vizag to Araku is itself mesmerising. Your surroundings transition smoothly from the plains to the valley. The city noise disappears and the quietude of the valley takes over. And there are two very different, yet equally amazing, ways to cover the distance from Vizag to Araku. Either by rail or by road, the journey to Araku Valley is just as wonderful as the many tourist attractions you will visit there.

When planning your trip to Araku, do consider how to travel and the route you’re going to take. Here are the two ways you can cover the 114 km distance from Vizag to Araku and have a wonderful time in the valley.

With any popular hill station, there’s also a relaxing, scenery-filled rail journey attached to it. Take Ooty or Darjeeling, for example. And Araku is not far behind in this aspect. This hill station has its own rail service and it comes with a lot of charm.

Train no. 18514 Kirandul Express is more of your traditional rail experience, leaving Visakhapatnam daily at 9:35 PM to reach Araku railway station at 12:50 AM. This train travels further till Kirandul in Chhattisgarh, with stoppages at Koraput, Jeypore, Jagdalpur and Dantewada. This train takes about 3 hours 15 minutes to reach Araku.

Train no. 58501 is the Visakhapatnam-Kirandul passenger train. This train is your choice if you want to leave for Araku in the morning, with it departing from Visakhapatnam at 6:50 AM everyday. But this train takes 4 hours 10 minutes to reach Araku, reaching the valley railway station at 11 AM.

Your best option though is train no. 00501 Visakhapatnam-Araku AC Passenger, which is India’s first Vistadome train. The train is ideal for tourists who wish to explore the scenic valley on the way to Araku. It leaves Visakhapatnam at 6:50 AM and arrives at Araku at 10:45 AM, taking about 3 hours 55 minutes. The vistadome coaches are fixed with reclining chairs that can be rotated 360 degrees.

vizag to araku distance

While the rail journey is ideal for foreigners and families travelling to Araku, the road trip appeals to the youngsters. Particularly, those people who love bikes can enjoy a thrilling ride to the valley. The distance from Vizag to Araku by road is about 114 km. Travellers have options as far as the route is concerned. But the most popular one is the route passing through S Kota (Though in peak season, one may come across traffic jams on this route). A more comfortable, and less-congested, route is through Paderu which makes your journey longer. But it also gives you the chance to visit more places, like Vanjangi and Madugula (the village that houses a famous halwa).

If you are interested in saving money and travelling cheaply to Araku, public transport is not a bad option. APSRTC frequently operates buses from the City of Destiny to Araku Valley, with the fare being around Rs. 150. Their first bus leaves as early as 5 AM from Visakhapatnam. It takes about 3 hours 25 minutes to travel from Visakhapatnam to Araku by bus.

So, these are the ways in which you can make your journey to Araku. Be it a long-planned trip or a simple weekend getaway, make your trip memorable and have a lot of fun with your friends or family. Here are the 10 offbeat experiences you can have on your trip to Araku Valley.

Disclaimer: The Visakhapatnam to Araku train timings are subject to change as per the Indian Railways schedule. Also, due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, travellers are requested to wear a mask, maintain social distancing and regularly sanitise themselves.
