The Cargo Line is a drive system designed for the best electric cargo bikes . The Tern Quick Haul D8 is a compact cargo e-bike designed for those with light to moderate carrying needs (110 lb in total). It’s easily among the best cargo e-bikes with a Bosch motor.

This bike falls neatly between cheaper hub-drive cargo e-bikes like the Aventon Abound and Rad Power Bikes RadWagon 4 , and heavier-duty cargo models like the RemiDemi 10D (reviewed below) and Yuba’s FastRack.

Tern is well-known for producing durable and reliable cargo bikes with a broad range of easy-to-use accessories. However, the prices typically exceed $5,000. With this model, you get a lower capacity (331 lb), but you get all the same quality and functionality.

Of course, you get more carrying capacity and power with the Abound and RadWagon 4 for a lower price. In contrast, higher-end cargo e-bikes can haul over 400 lb, have more space, and have extra functionality.

Nonetheless, if you don’t need to carry huge loads and have a medium-sized budget for a bike with premium mid-drive Bosch electronics, the Tern Quick Haul D8 is a solid choice.

8. Cannondale Tesoro Neo X 1 Remixte

The Tesoro Neo X 1 weighs just 55 lb, which is relatively lightweight for a bike in this category. Therefore, don’t look past this Bosch electric bike if you want speed and urban functionality at a reasonable price.

Bosch mid-drive chosen by Trek and others

In the power-limited markets of Europe and Asia, the mid-drive market last year made it clear that the there were going to be two big players who were in the game for the long run. They are  Panasonic and Bosch .

We’ve recently reported on Bosch partnering with  Haibike ,  BH-eMotion , Cannondale , and others…while one by one, the big bike manufacturers have been contracting with one of these two so they can add a mid-drive to their lineup, without needing to design one of their own (we are collecting a list of manufacturers who are contracting with Panasonic also).

Trek has decided to join the Bosch mid-drive family with a new model that is a hard-tail 29’r called the Powerfly+9.

One difference that stands out is the unusually small chainring. It looks like it may be a BB-shaft inside a freewheel adapter. This would allow the rear wheel to be powered without adding any pedaling. Europe and Asia are dominated by pedelec systems, and this is where you must pedal for the controller to add power to the chain.

If this truly is a freewheeling Bottom-Bracket (BB), then this bike can be powered without pedaling, which is popular in North America.

Some riders in these regions have stated that they like how this means they do not have to manage a hand-throttle, but I am leaning towards embracing systems that allow both. There are actually some E-bikes that operate as a pedelec when you want, and run off of a throttle when you want.

There are several bike manufacturers in Europe who have not made an effort to compete with the bigger bike companies who sell in North America. Many of them have also contracted their drive units from Bosch. Pictured below are more Bosch-drive ebikes that are unlikely to be imported into North America.

KTM’s full-suspension electric-assist “eGnition” line had previously contracted to use the “Clean Mobile” drive, until CM recently went out of business. Bosch is a very healthy company, so KTM has decided to jump on-board the Bosch train.

Last year we reviewed an impressive Focus Jarifa  street E-bike using a Panasonic mid-drive. Focus is now going to add an off-road model with a more powerful Bosch unit. Their competitor “BH-eMotion” also carries models with BOTH Panasonic and Bosch-drives.

Bicycle manufacturer “Lapierre” is based in Dijon, France. This is their new 2014 ‘Overvolt’ model.

Another bit of good news is that manufacturers will be able to specify the Bosch “45” unit, which is capable of 45 k/h (27-MPH), although it may be electronically limited to 20-MPH on any bikes sold in North America that are not designated as “off-road only” bikes. This is because the USA has a 20-MPH speed limit for E-bikes that want to avoid DOT moped laws, which would require a license, registration, insurance, along with head-lights/tail-lights and turn signals.

Although Canada has a 500W power limit, the USA has a 750W limit (one horse-power). the Bosch-45 unit is listed as 350W continuous, and also 500W temporary peak power output.

Why Are Bosch E-Bike Motors So Popular?

Bosch motors deliver three essential components that make for an excellent e-bike riding experience: power, efficiency, and a fantastic-feeling ride. What is the Most Powerful Bosch Motor?

The Bosch Performance Line CX is the most powerful motor to be produced by the manufacturer. It’s a compact and lightweight motor designed for “a unique eMTB experience”, according to the Bosch website. It supports with torque of up to 85 Nm “for powerful acceleration with compact dimensions”.

The 85 Nm maximum torque makes it possible to accelerate faster, especially at low cadences, and enables you to start off on steep terrain much more easily. This has a noticeable effect on the way you ride.

As with the rest of Bosch’s top-end motors, the Performance Line CX comes with the Bosch smart system so you can individualise your ride by fine-tuning components to your own personal needs.

For example, there are special riding modes, Smart Push Assist for helping out on steep climbs, a Hill Hold function with automatic rollback protection, an eBike Lock for extra security, and over-the-air updates so the smart system is always up to date.

In terms of power, the Performance Line CX’s eMTB mode is specifically designed for sporting use. Understanding the layout of your buttons is important as you can use these in combinations to make your bike do clever things!

Turning on Your E-Bike with the Bosch Purion

The  Bosch Purion Power Button  is at the very top of the controller, hidden out of view if you are on the bike. 

To  get more assistance , press the PLUS button

To  get less assistance or NO assistance , press the minus button

To use the Purion Walk Function

Some bikes have a walking aid turned on, to do this you press the walk button and then the “+” button after pressing walk.

Bosch Purion E-Bike Display Step-by-Step Button Controls

• Change units from miles to kilometers:  hold the – key and tap the Power button.
• Reset trip distance:  hold the – key and hold the + key for a couple of seconds.
• Turn On Lights  (if they are wired in): hold the + button for a few seconds.
• Change Menus  as you would in a car, hold the – button (trip distance, odometer, range, assist level). These only reflect which assistance mode you are in. For example, if you are in ECO, it tells you the range of the battery using that assistance level. If you are in no assistance it doesn’t tell you any range.
• Activate Walk Mode , make sure you are in one of the four levels of assist, then press the walk button once and hold the + button to make the motor go. Note that some e-bikes do not have walk mode enabled.

PowerPack Frame

PowerPack Frame batteries sit on the outside of the eBike frame, on the seat tube or down tube. They have a handle, so you can remove and carry them easily and conveniently.

All PowerPacks Frame in the smart system have the same mount. Therefore, you can easily insert a different battery, if the geometry of your eBike allows. Smaller batteries reduce the weight, larger ones increase your range.

New The PowerPack 800 Frame is available in the smart system. The battery will be available for retrofitting at specialist eBike dealers from fall 2024.

PowerPack Rack

PowerPacks of the Rack variant sit on or under the rear rack. This battery position has advantages for eBikes with a step-through frame – for example, more freedom when mounting and dismounting. In addition, the powerful batteries can be easily and conveniently attached and removed, thanks to their higher position on the eBike. The greater distance from the ground additionally protects them from splash water or impact from stones.

For the highest demands on performance and esthetics: Bosch PowerTubes fit ideally into the clean design of the eBike – they are integrated in the frame tube. They come in two variants, horizontal or vertical. Both are installed directly by the manufacturer to match the specific eBike model. A safety catch prevents it from falling out. The batteries can be removed easily and conveniently, if designed to do so.

Discreetly integrated in the frame tube, the high-quality power sources are hardly noticeable. Bosch offers many PowerTube variants with different energy content in the smart system and Bosch eBike system 2. This way, you are prepared for any task – whether performance riding with the eMTB on the trail, riding uphill with a loaded Cargo eBike, or on a shorter, everyday ride in the city.  

New CompactTube 400

Slim, integrated, compact, and with 400 watt hours at a weight of just around 4.4 pounds, it's a real energy champion: the CompactTube 400 with innovative battery cell technology offers the highest energy density of all Bosch PowerTubes. This makes the extra-light battery the ideal choice for performance light eMTBs, minimalist gravel eBikes or design-oriented urban eBikes – this battery is for anyone who loves the sleek look of conventional bikes and wants electric support.

Battery combinations and additional batteries – one battery on its own is not always enough. Cargo eBikes put a lot of strain on the battery due to their higher weight, especially with a heavy load on board. Class 1 bikes have a motor (max 750w) that assists while pedaling up to 20 mph. Class 3, also known as “speed pedelec,” can have up to a 750w motor (aka 1-horsepower) but can assist you up to 28 mph. Both are allowed in most states and cities without needing a license.

Class 2 models have become more popular with riders, especially at lower prices. These models have a throttle that can propel a bike up to 20 mph without needing continuous pedaling.

Some bikes blur the lines. Aventon’s popular Pace 500 , for example, is technically a Class 3 e-bike in that it reaches speeds up to 28 mph, but it also has a throttle that tops out at 20 mph (the maximum legal speed for a throttle).

Two E-Bike Terms to Know

Torque: Measured in Newton meters (or Nm), torque is a rotational measurement of force—and the number to pay attention to when you want an idea of an e-bike motor’s output. More torque means more power off the line and more boost to your pedaling. The heavier the bike, the more torque it needs. Lighter road bikes typically have 30 to 40Nm of torque, and trail and cargo models (generally) have at least 80Nm. Most commuter bikes fall somewhere in between.

Watt Hours : The size of an e-bike’s battery is measured in watt-hours (or Wh). This measurement represents the energy stored in the battery and how many watts it can deliver each hour. The higher the number, the longer the range, but the faster you go, the less range you get. So, if a 504Wh battery paired with a 500-watt motor gives you one hour of ride time at the highest assist, riding at about half that power will double your range.

Other E-Bike Features to Consider

Locking Battery : As electric bike options continue expanding, many brands now seamlessly integrate batteries to make the bike look sleeker (and more like a traditional non-assist bike). Most batteries lock to the bike and come with a key that lets you unlock and remove it, which serves multiple purposes: You can remove the battery and charge it off the bike, a locked battery deters (and hopefully prevents) a thief from stealing it, and an e-bike with the battery removed is safer for hauling on a bike rack and lighter for carrying up steps.

Wider Tires: Because e-bikes can maintain higher speeds for longer periods than standard bikes, you want extra control. Wider tires provide better traction and the freedom to leave the pavement with little penalty, and a suspension fork will help tame some of the rougher roads you might explore. Good disc brakes are a must, too, for slowing a heavy bike at high speed. This is not a place to skimp.

Integrated Lights : Some e-bikes have an integrated lighting system that turns on when you power up the bike. While this is an awesome feature to have, it’s not a deal-breaker if your bike isn’t equipped this way. With so many great bike lights available, it’s just as easy to attach your own.

Certification

Following a dramatic increase in fires caused by the lithium-ion batteries used in electric bikes, there is a push from local officials, regulatory agencies , and advocacy groups across the U.S. for improved safety certification of e-bikes, batteries, and motor units. Recently, New York City enacted a law requiring that any e-bike sold in the city (starting September 16, 2023) “has been certified by an accredited testing laboratory for compliance with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) standard 2849”.

However, just because something is marketed as UL 2849 compliant, tested to UL 2849, or even “certified to UL 2849” does not mean it is UL Safety Certified. Ibrahim Jilani, UL’s Global Director of Consumer Technology notes, “Certification is always earned by a manufacturer and not a given when they undergo a product submittal. The UL Mark, or any authorized certification mark, can only be issued upon successful demonstration of meeting the requirements of the safety standard.” UL’s updated list of products Certified to UL 2849 can be found here .

Bicycling contacted many brands who informed us they are evaluating the standards and certification process. So, expect the list of Certified e-bikes to grow in the coming months. If owning a UL 2849-certified bike is important to you, ask the brand from which you purchase it for proof of certification. You can cross-reference OSHA ’s Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories if you want to take a deep dive into the topic.

How We Tested

Our team of experienced bike testers evaluated each model here on its overall quality, its safety features, handling, motor, battery life, and whether the components and features added to the overall quality of the ride. We tested most of these bikes on our local roads, commuting to and from work, using them to stock up on groceries and beer, and running their batteries down to officially see how long they last on one charge.

A few bikes here were not available for testing. In those cases, we relied on the expertise of our test team, interviews with product managers, and rigorous research to compare the bikes’ value and performance against similar models we have tested.

At first glance, there are not many big visual differences between the original Aventure and this second-generation model. However, once outside, the small changes feel huge.

Compared to the original Aventure ( on sale for $1,500 ), the Aventure.2 rides much smoother. The new torque sensor allows more control over the acceleration of Aventure's 750W rear hub motor, making the bike's ride more intuitive. Some of our test riders found the previous model to have too much torque, particularly for lighter-weight riders or those new to e-bikes; the Aventure.2 remedied this fault.

In addition to the new torque sensor, the Aventure.2 has an updated head unit interface, integrated turn signals, front light, rear rack, and fenders. We found the Aventure.2 well-suited for commutes (especially on snowy days and gravel pathways) and off-road on doubletrack trails. The bike's weight and components limit its functionality on singletrack for more aggressive mountain bike riding.

BEST FULL SUSPENSION E-MTB

The EX-e is lighter, a lot lighter—10 or so pounds—than a full-power e-bike because it uses a less powerful motor requiring a smaller battery. That makes it appealing to riders who want an e-bike but also want the feel and handling of an unpowered e-bike. It should also interest lighter and less powerful riders put off by riding a 50-pound eMTB. As Senior Test Editor Matt Phillips discovered, being less powerful doesn’t mean less fun. The EX-e proves that the old Less Is More axiom works for e-bikes too.

Powertube battery stuck in frame, key not turning.

I've got a new issue on my Mondraker Level ? My powertube battery is currently stuck in the frame. I can insert the key, but it won't turn to unlock the battery. I noticed the lock now isn't quite central to the hole in the frame, and there is a little bit of play so I can insert the key and move the lock barrel 2-3mm towards or away from the battery, it's always had this bit of play but guess this is not normal? Anyone have an idea of how I can get it out? There is a pair of allen bolts externally for both battery mounts but I'm not sure this will help if the battery is already stuck. Shop I bought the bike from are a few hours drive away so would like to avoid if possible. I do have a Bosch service centre nearby if needed (bike is in warranty). Thanks

Sometimes I have to wiggle the battery at the same time as turning the key to get mine out. Or push the battery in slightly to activate the latching mechanism as I'm turning the key.

See if pushing down on the battery (as if you were re fitting) while gently turning the key helps. A squirt of WD40/GT85 into the lock may help as well.

How does the lock usually work? Does unlocking it turn a barrel or does it release a barrel outwards? The fact you can fully insert the key means the key is lifting the pins in the lock barrel OK so it is rotation of the barrel that is stuck. Applying lube inside the lock is not going to help therefore. Lube..or preferably wd40 needs to be applied to the external barrel. I suggest you squirt some wd 40 between the lock and the frame and also gently repeatedly tap that area to dislodge what is probably dust or grit causing it to stick.

Just a quick point .. NEVER ! EVER EVER squirt wd40 in locks, clocks or anything else with intricate small moving parts. Whilst WD40 is great for freeing up rusty crappy stuck stuff, it leaves behind a sticky residue. Small particles stick to this and build up turning it into a mix of sandpaper and grinding paste, eventually wearing away all the delicate bits. A silicone or teflon (ptfe) lube would be more appropriate.  

Update - It's out! ? Didn't end up spraying anything, but pushing the battery into the frame and wiggling the barrel up and down a bit while turning the key it hit a spot where the key would turn easily and out it popped. Weird, I spent 10 mins trying the same yesterday... Since the barrel isn't lined up with the hole in the frame, I'm wondering whether it's worth trying to adjust the mounts at either end of the battery in the frame to set them up right. I'm not sure if there is any adjustment or whether they are fixed in place though. Off to go look for some diagrams/ youtube vids...  

Just out of interest was there a change in ambient temperature since you first tried to get the battery out. My LBS mentioned to me last year that they had a couple of bikes with sticky batteries when the Power Tube batteries first came out. Their theory was that the battery was expanding slightly, so if there was a temp rise since the battery was installed, it was causing the battery to jam in the frame due to very tight clearance. Never heard mention of it on any forum since, so not certain if that theory is correct.  

@Gigha - I tried taking the battery out mid-ride to swap for my spare. It was 10-11degC ambient at the time. I then tried again yesterday when it was 7-8degC and failed. This morning it was a bit cooler 3-4degC and the battery popped out with some wiggling. I've been swapping batteries fairly regularly before this without any issues.

I’ve just had a similar problem, in fact the lock has been getting more and more reluctant for a few weeks. It had got to a “one of us won’t survive this” stage ? I took the assembly apart which is quite simple. That made clear it was the lock barrel and not the catch/lever which I had thought it might be. I cleaned the lock, put it back together and it’s pretty smooth now opening every time, first time. I think a new lock isn’t expensive, 20-25 euros I think. I’m not much impressed with the quality of it, it’s made by Abus and not up to their usual standard I’d say.

I’ve had a similar issue on a Trek Rail where I got the key stuck and the battery jammed in position. I also spent a while trying to push and pull various things, with eventually the battery coming out. There are various causes, but generally a bracket alignment issue. I found the screws holding my bottom battery bracket were loose, which allowed the bottom bracket to tilt and jam the battery. These screws (for both the top and bottom brackets) can be tightened from the outside of the frame, so worth a check if your battery gets stuck. Once you get the battery out, follow the battery alignment guidelines to get the brackets in the correct position again.

Look no further than the vertical parking feature built into their rear racks that allows the bikes to take up the same amount of floor space as a coat rack.

Now, with the new Tern Quick Haul Long, the company is finally filling out in the length department with its lower cost model, while still incorporating more of the size and capabilities of its longer GSD model.

The GSD has long been Tern’s flagship longer cargo e-bike, but it also comes with a flagship price, starting at around $4,500 and increasing quickly from there for the even higher-end components. The Quick Haul, on the other hand, is the brand’s smaller and more budget-friendly cargo offering. Now Tern is combining the two, bringing GSD features to the Quick Haul, but leaving the higher price in the dust.

Starting at US $3,799, The Quick Haul Long is still compact by modern cargo e-bike standards, but incorporates more of the GSD’s DNA for even more capability. It’s also now one of the most affordable premium cargo e-bikes on the market available from the higher-tier brands.

“The compact cargo bike category came about when we launched the GSD in 2018,” explained Josh Hon, Tern Team Captain. “Customers loved how such a small little bike could handle so many tasks typically done by car. Since then, we’ve learned a lot about how to make cargo bikes even better, and we applied those insights to the Quick Haul Long. The bike retains the GSD’s core features but it comes at a more accessible price, without compromising safety or reliability.”

The Quick Haul Long sticks with Tern’s typical 20″ wheels, keeping it the same length as a typical larger wheel city bike. However, its long rack and 190 kg (419 lb) weight rating means it can handle significantly more utility tasks. Just that rear rack alone is rated for 90 kg (200 lb), and also has a built-in tow mount for pulling trailers or towing other bikes . Carrying two kids on the rear rack is a breeze, and the bike’s lower center of gravity and stiff frame are optimized for stable, smooth riding.

Even the front cargo mount, which supports an optional front rack or basket, is rated for 20 kg (44 lb). Anyone who has ever loaded up the front of their bike in addition to the rear will know that’s a serious amount of weight, helping to balance out a load and provide more mounting options.

The bike is said to fit riders from 5’1″ to 6’1″, or 155 to 185 cm. The low step-through frame is designed to be easy to mount, as well as easy to hop forward on, especially when you’ve got a couple of wiggling kids on the rear rack and need some extra stability at a red light. For more stability when parked, the bike features one of the strongest dual kickstands I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot of kickstands. I’ve had a motorcycle or two that I wish Tern had built the kickstand for.

Powering the bike is Bosch’s Cargo Line mid-drive motor, meaning you get the backing of the leading German drive maker as well as all of the warranty and service/support that comes with it.

And while Tern’s heritage comes from the bike experts of Taiwan, you’d almost think they were a German company based on how much emphasis they put into the engineering and safety certifications on their bikes, including testing to the new DIN79010 standard at the bike’s max capacity of 190 kg (419 lb).

As Hon continued, “The cargo bike segment has exploded in popularity in recent years, with just about every brand introducing their version of a ‘cargo bike.’ But unfortunately, testing and safety standards haven’t kept pace. Germany has recently published the first national testing standard for cargo bikes – DIN79010. We believe that any cargo bike claiming a MGVW over 120 kg should be tested to the DIN 79010 standard—but very few have been so far.”

This definitely feels like Tern’s shot across the bow of budget brands with their popular low-cost cargo e-bike models. There’s no way Tern can compete directly with a $1,500 cargo e-bike, but it can offer significantly better quality components for a compelling price, at least compared to all the $6,000 cargo e-bikes out there.

For those who are trying to decide whether to save money on a budget brand or upgrade to a premium model, this is about the best price you’ll find for a premium electric cargo bike.

I still believe that budget cargo e-bikes have their place, and to be fair, I got my sister one for her family. But we can’t kid ourselves and pretend like there isn’t a quality difference. For someone actually replacing a car and relying on their e-bike daily, that quality difference translates into everyday reliability and the peace of mind of knowing that the bike is designed to last for years, not for a year.

Of course, the fact that the bike runs a Bosch motor is always going to be a double-edged sword in the US. Bosch systems are famously pedal-assist only, meaning no throttles. The Bosch name carries a lot of weight in Europe, but Americans seem to opt for throttle-enable electric bikes nine times out of ten, so it’s an uphill pedal to try and sell non-throttle e-bikes in the States. In Europe though, I can see this thing crushing the pricier alternatives from German and British e-bike brands.

NCM make high-quality, but affordable electric bikes. In this review, I will explain why I believe the NCM Moscow is one of the best budget electric mountain bikes.

About NCM Electric bikes

NCM Bikes, founded in 2014, have quickly become one of the largest electric bike brands in Europe, the parent company, Leon Cycle GmbH is a German company based in Hanover. Their e-bikes are designed in Germany and manufactured in China.

This great e-bike is now available in the US with a higher power output 500w motor and a top speed of 20mph. The NCM Moscow Plus has a high capacity 48v 16ah battery, Tektro hydraulic disc brakes and Suntour XCM forks with 100mm travel.  This model uses the more advanced C7 LCD with increased functionality and has 24-speed gears with Shimano Crankset and Acera 8-speed rear mech. There is also a throttle fitted.

I have ridden the EU spec version and that was fairly nippy, so I would imagine with double the power on tap this US version is an absolute joy to ride!

EU Specification

The centrepiece of this Electric bike is the DAS-Kit X15 geared rear hub motor: This durable 250W rear electric hub motor is known for its efficiency and high torque output. It offers a reduction ratio of 1:5 and a maximum torque of 55 Nm, which is excellent for such a small motor. This German-designed hub motor punches above its weight and it is refreshing to see such a high-quality unit on an affordable e-bike.

48v13ah Lithium battery pack with USB charging port for mobile devices:  Usually, electric bike battery packs take up a considerable amount of space in the frame, but the Moscow’s battery is integrated into the down tube of the bike, keeping the weight low and central, which helps to improve stability. The claimed maximum range of 75 miles seems a little optimistic, but possible if the pedal assist is used wisely. The total battery energy capacity is 624wh (watt hours), so if you were consuming 20wh per mile, your range would be 31 miles. My friend owns one of these bikes and gets an average range of around 40-50 miles.

This is a rugged bike built for the road less travelled:  This is an excellent bike for weekend adventures on trails and gravel tracks. The Suntour XCT front forks have 100mm of travel, which is more than adequate for light off-road riding, and the excellent Schwalbe Smart Sam all-terrain tyres provide grip where it’s needed. The gel saddle is comfortable enough, and the Velo ergonomic handlebar grips not only look great but feel great too!  Gearing is the dependable Shimano Altus 21-speed, and all the gears are indexed perfectly as expected.

Multi-function LCD : The Das-Kit LCD gives you all the information you would expect, including journey time and mileage. It also has 6 power levels of pedal assist, so you can fine-tune the power output to suit your needs.

Excellent build quality:  One thing that has always impressed me with NCM Electric bikes is the consistency of the build quality. The NCM Moscow is no exception. It looks great, but there is no compromise on functionality and safety.  The Tektro mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors provide predictable braking and the brake levers incorporate motor cut-off switches to ensure safe riding.

The NCM Moscow electric bike offers exceptional value for money. I have tested NCM’s other bikes and this one is no exception. They all offer a lot for the price. The specification is excellent and it is good to see a 48v battery fitted to a 250w bike. This battery is the same capacity as the Milano I reviewed previously and a realistic range of between 30-45 miles, or 31 miles using the 20wh per mile calculation, should be expected. The claimed range of 75 miles may be a little optimistic for everyday use – but it depends on how much you use the electric assist.

The Tektro Mechanical disc brakes provide adequate and predictable stopping power, while the Schwalbe Smart Sam tyres will provide sure-footed grip on a variety of surfaces, as well as a reasonable amount of puncture protection.

It is good to see an integrated battery pack on an e-bike of this price, it does finish the bike off nicely.

As far as electric mountain bikes go, the NCM Moscow is excellent. Not only is it well-made, but it has a decent battery and an excellent motor.

I serviced one of these for a customer last Summer and had to take it for a short test ride.  I was impressed with the way the small motor effortlessly handled the steep Cornish hills. The beefy 29er tyres handled the potholes and bumps of the back lanes with ease.

I had previously ridden the Milano model and there are a lot of obvious similarities. The Milano is made with the daily commuter in mind, whereas the Moscow is geared more toward the recreational rider, who will be venturing off-road more often. If I had to choose between the two, I would go for the Moscow, simply because it has that ‘go anywhere’ feel, and if you decided to use it as an everyday commuter bike, there are provisions to fit mudguards and a rack.

As with all the other NCM bikes I have reviewed, I rate this bike. It has to be the best-value electric mountain bike on the market at the moment.

The great thing about this bike is that the build quality is excellent. It feels very rugged and durable, although I would err on the side of caution when taking it off the beaten track. It is not a high-end mountain bike and isn’t designed to take the rigours of extreme downhill riding. The suspension forks are fine for rough surfaces and a few small potholes, but nothing too harsh like rocks and logs.

If you are in the market for an affordable off-road e-bike, then this ticks all the right boxes.

Vrai 1er test aujourd’hui du NCM Moscow 48v 13 Ah 26″ 1ere génération : Ballade prévue avec un copain : 55 km et 1000 de dénivelé, jusqu’au col de l’oeillon (massif du pilat – Loire) sur petites routes et chemin. Déjà fait avec VAE à 1000 eur et sa batterie de 500 W pour comparer. La batterie m’avait ramené alors pile à la maison, mais tout juste vidée (donc 55 km et 1000 m). Malheureusement, aujourd’hui, la batterie de mon tout beau tout neuf NCM moscow 1ere génération m’a laché au bout de 32 km, 500 m avant le col. J’ai fait le retour au molet (heureusemnt 90% de descente au retour). Donc 6 barres de batterie au départ, 5 au bout de 12 km, 4 à 20 km, 3, puis 2 barres en qq km seulement. Les 2 barres restantes ont tenus les 5 derniers km. Pour moi, pas normal du tout. Je pèse 65 kgs et j’ai sollicité modérément l’assistance : essentiellement vitesse 2 et 3 dans les cotes. J’ai sollicité le sav Decathlon aujourd’hui et j’attends sa réponse. Donc difficile de noter ce vélo en l’état des choses, car par ailleurs, il possède qq atouts : solidité apparente, confort (j’ai qd meme mis une selle confort), prix, look, poignée confort, béquille et sonnette rigolote (mais ça, c’est pas cher à rajouter), mais aussi qq défauts : poids lourds 27 kgs, dérailleurs avt et arrière déréglés (pas si grave), disque avt très légèrement voilé (frotement), grincement du frein avant (sur 10 kms de descente, ça saoule), pneu ultra fin. J’ai eu le bonheur de créver à l’arrière (pas de pot qd même !), réparation sans pb, mais j’ai alors constaté la finesse de l’épaisseur du caoutchouc des pneus. Une simple epine l’avait traversé. Mais bon, il semblerait que c’est de la bonne marque. Il manque réellement sur le web de vrai test sur la durée, en particulier sur l’autonomie réelle d’un VAE. Pour moi, sauf si le sav me confirme qu’il y a problème et remplace ma batterie, je ne recommande pas ce VAE pour de la rando de 50 Km, au risque de rentrer avec les mollets, sauf si plat.

Hello, Je rentre de ma 1ere vraie sortie avec le NCM Moscow 1ere génération (blanc 26″, 48V 13 Ah). 55 km – 1000 m de dénivelé – Mon poids plume : 65 Kgs – Niveau d’assistance utilisé : modéré. Points – : – Niveau de batterie peu fiable. 1 barre en moins au bout de 15 km – 2eme barre à 20 km – 3 et 4 eme barre entre 25 et 30 km (!) – Les 2 dernières barres sont tombés ensemble à 32 km, en haut du sommet. J’ai fait le retour sans batterie, et c’est dur. J’ai signalé à Decathlon, qui j’espère fera le nécessaire auprès de Leon Cycles. – Tous les réglages sont à reprendre : freins, dérailleurs. Mais bon, ça, c’est rien. – 1ère sortie, 1 ére crevaison, à l’arrière. J’ai pu réparer sans problème sans démonter la roue. Juste sortir la chambre à air roue montée et repérer le trou. Mais ça m’a donné l’occasion de constater que les pneus sont ultra fins (pourtant vtt). Une simple petite épine à traverser le pneu. On va dire pas de chance.

Points + : le confort est là. je mets pour le moment 3/10 pour la fiabilité. Si une nouvelle batterie règle le problème, j’aurai tendance à noter 7/10. A voir dans le temps.

Le NCM Moscou a une tige de selle de 30,9 mm. La meilleure tige de selle à suspension est la Suntour SP-12 NCX .

I got my Moscow Plus last September and yesterday took it out for my 20th weekly ride from San Francisco across the bridge into the Marin Headlands, usually just over a 33 mile ride. I’m 71 and it is a work out but I don’t ride to work out. I ride to get out into nature. The seat crumbed under me within two months of getting it but some duct take fixed it perfectly. The fixture that has the key slot to use to fit in the battery came loose when I had a flat tire fixed but aside from being loose when the battery is not in it, still works perfectly. The tires handle the sharp rocks on some of the trails. The gas throttle, the bike’s gas pump, is dangerous at first. I learned to turn off the power before taking the bike down stair ramps and before wheeling it into my basement. The bike jumps out of your hands if you touch that throttle while your standing on the ground. Had a bad accident last November on a steep incline when I grabbed the handlebar to stop the bike sliding away under me and it shot off when I accidentally touched the throttle. Me, the bike and my iPad all fell and shattered in different directions. The rear derailleur was jammed into the back wheel so the wheels wouldn’t turn and I didn’t have a tool on me miles away from civilization. But 10 minutes later another cyclist with a mini tool saved the day. So carry that sack of tools they send to assemble the bike when you ride it. You never know when you’ll need them. Sharp turns are almost impossible for me on this bike but wow I love it!!! I can cycle up and down trails till the cows come home. Trails I never could cycle up before. Love that! A super great buy and I’m so glad I got it. And they had super great customer service to help me learn how to use the charger. Did I mention I’d never used an ebike before?

Bought my new Moscow bike from Amazon but not long before I had problems with coffee grinder noise and serious vibration, found the cable from the controller to the back wheel had been routed too close to the drive sprocket and had chafed through causing broken wires and short circuits. Leon cycles Germany took the wheel back, but no better, a new controller followed, no better, they then told me I needed a new back wheel and motor, or a rebuilt motor, but due to Brexit they could not help any more. I now have a bike which will run perfectly when running but can take 20+ attempts to get started without grating and vibrating. Can anybody help?

I know this is an old review but I thought I’d ask my question anyway. If it get a reply, good; if not, that’s OK too. I bought a Moscow Plus late in 2020. It’s worked out very well for me. Now that I’ve owned it for a while and gotten the feel of it I’ve worked my riding stamina up to where I’m ready to ride farther and farther out. I love to fish so at some point I hope to make the trek to my nearest trout fishing stream which is approximately 30 or so miles one way. The terrain to get there is generally flat ground with one long stretch of about a mile and a half being a good downhill grade.

For an earth-bound bike rider that’s as close to flying as I’m ever going to get but, I temper that with the knowledge that on the way back I’ll have to hump it a bit to get back up that hill.

All of that to ask; Has anyone that you know of ever ridden their Moscow Plus starting with a full charge, on battery power alone to see exactly how far it would take them on generally flat terrain?

I plan on purchasing a spare OEM battery latter on this year so I won’t be able to do this battery endurance test until I have that spare battery to get me back home. In the mean time I just though I’d ask if anyone has already done this type of test. I could save me the trouble of doing it myself.

Buying a new battery, if you can find one is £500.00 plus a bit, so if I were you I would stay close to home and do circuits for for a couple of hours at a time until the battery runs out of power, then walk back home using the walk mode ( there should be enough left in the battery to do that).
