Please Note - If you are cruising around Australia you need to select Pacific. With Regions, variances can apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. You are not required to enter stop-over countries if your stop-over is less than 48 hours.

If you don’t know where you’re traveling to within the next 12 months, choose Worldwide to ensure you’re covered no matter where you go. If you’re travelling to multiple countries choose the region that you are visiting that is furthest away (excluding stopovers less than 48 hours). In most cases you will be covered for the closer regions as well. For example, if you choose Europe, you will also be covered in the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.

Worldwide means anywhere in the world

Americas means USA, Canada, South America, Latin America, Hawaii and the Caribbean

Europe means all European countries, including UK

Middle East refers to the area from Syria to Yemen; Egypt to Iran

Asia generally means Asia and the Indian subcontinent. For some insurers this excludes Japan*

Pacific means the South West Pacific, Australia and Indonesia/Bali*. Select Pacific for domestic cruises in New Zealand waters

New Zealand means domestic travel within New Zealand only

*Note: Variances apply for Bali, Indonesia, Japan and Middle East. Check that your destination is covered once directed to your chosen insurer’s site.

Travel Insurance  Frequently Asked Questions

Does travel insurance cover coronavirus(covid-19).

It depends! Unfortunately, the answer isn't a straightforward one. There are some situations where cover is available, and others where it is an exclusion. It largely depends on which insurer you bought your policy with ; when you bought it; where you're travelling to; when you're travelling; and, the reason for your claim. One thing that is for certain - you're unlikely to be covered for claims relating to the coronavirus for future travel if you haven't yet purchased a travel insurance policy as this is a known event.

Which is the best travel insurance in New Zealand?

The best travel insurance for you depends entirely on your planned trip and your circumstances. If you're a backpacker on a tight budget, you might want a no-frills medical-only policy. Whereas, if you're heading on a once in a lifetime cruise, have outlaid a lot of money in upfront deposits or if you have health conditions, a comprehensive policy might be best for you. While there's no single best travel insurance that's right for everyone, finding a policy that works for you is easy when you use our quote comparison to start comparing prices and features. With Compare Travel Insurance, you can also read up on travel insurance reviews from customers to learn about their customer service and importantly, claims experience.

Is it too late to buy cover?

It's better late than never. We recommend buying a policy as soon as you've booked and started paying deposits for flights, accommodation and tours, but you can buy travel insurance at any point. Even if you forgot and are already overseas . Exclusions may apply though, so be sure to check the PDS and eligibility criteria before you buy.

Can I get cover for my medical conditions?

Cover is available for most medical conditions. Whether or not you need to declare your conditions and whether an additional charge will apply depends on the condition, its stability, current treatment, the recency of the diagnosis and your age. Minor conditions such as allergies, cataracts, and certain diabetes are often covered free of charge. However other medical conditions such as arthritis, any kind of cancer, heart conditions and hip & knee replacements require medical screenings and additional charges are likelt to apply. Today, most insurers use online medical screening software which makes it easy to declare your conditions and get covered in minutes. Although finding cover for terminal illnesses in New Zealand is difficult. Learn more about covering your conditions with our guide on declaring your medical conditions .

Can I purchase travel insurance at the airport?

Yes, you can. Generally speaking, you can purchase travel insurance up to a year before your trip, right up to boarding at the airport. With comprehensive travel insurance, you are covered for cancellation benefits from the moment you buy your policy, so we recommend buying it as soon as you start paying for flights, tours and accommodation.

Can I get travel insurance if I'm already overseas?

You can buy cover if you are already overseas, although each travel insurer has different rules on age limits and waiting periods. Check out our already overseas travel insurance guide to learn more.

Does travel insurance cover pregnancy?

You can buy travel insurance to cover you when you're pregnant, but different brands will have different rules around how many weeks gestation they will provide cover up until. Terms may also vary on whether you've had complications, have a multiple pregnancy, conceived via IVF and whether you're looking for cover in case of emergency birth. Check out the handy table in our pregnancy guide for more information.

Do I need cover in New Zealand?

Unexpected events can happen anywhere. It is just as important to have domestic cover when travelling around New Zealand as it is when travelling overseas. If you're a New Zealand resident, a domestic policy covers you for cancellations, luggage cover and often rental vehicle excess. Medical coverage is not included, but you'll be eligible for publicly funded health care services. For non-residents visiting New Zealand, discover International visitors to New Zealand are currently not required to have travel insurance by law, but it is highly recommended to protect you from eye-watering medical bills and more.

Which is the cheapest policy?

The cost of travel insurance depends on a range of factors including your destination, duration of travel, age of travellers, planned activities, whether or not you have any medical conditions and the type of cover you choose (medical only, mid-range or comprehensive). The cheapest travel insurance is generally to less risky parts of the world - places with cheaper healthcare and less risk of injury, illness or theft - and policies which offer less coverage - so ones without benefits for adventure activities or pre-existing conditions. To get cheap travel insurance from New Zealand for your upcoming trip, create a quote and compare prices, but remember that the cheapest isn't always the best. You should consider your trip and what you require cover for.

Why should I buy travel insurance direct online?

Comparing prices and features online makes it easier to find the policy that's right for you and your circumstances. With comparetravelinsurance.co.nz , the price you see is the same price direct from the insurer. Sometimes you're not after the best policy but rather the best bang for your buck and comparing prices and features online can save you time, worry and loads of money.

Why Buy Travel Insurance?

We’re not silly, we know that plenty of New Zealanders go on holiday and have an amazing time exploring new and exciting places without buying travel insurance. But taking a gamble on your much needed break can be risky. Here’s why!

Exxy Medical Costs

If you buy a policy for just one reason this is it! Falling ill or being injured while travelling overseas can be extremely costly. Hospital costs in the USA can reach up to $10,000 per day, while emergency transport home for treatment can easily exceed $100,000! Ouch!

Disasters Can Strike

The excitement of getting on that plane has you knotted up like a pretzel. Picture your dismay if you had to cancel last minute. Worse still, imagine you’re mid-martini when bad news breaks. Should you need to return home, you’ll be covered for unforeseen events like injury or illness of a close relative.

Your stuff is important

Loss, theft or damage to your prized possessions can be a common, yet gut-wrenching experience. If your personal belongings go AWOL while you’re away the right policy will pay to replace or repair them. Win!

For your peace of mind

Travel insurance will take a load off so you can get some R&R. A comprehensive policy will cover you for an array of sticky situations while you're travelling within New Zealand, or overseas.

Because You Have To

Still not convinced? We hate to be the fun police, but some countries simply won’t let you in without cover! For example, it is mandatory to take out travel insurance when travelling to Thailand or Cuba.

How much does Medical Only travel insurance cost?

Why quality medical cover is essential overseas

As we mentioned, all seasoned travellers know that insurance with quality medical cover is a must-have for any overseas adventure. Without it, you could be left facing extreme costs for medical care, or even being refused treatment due to being uninsured and unable to pay your bill.

At SCTI, we’ve protected thousands of Kiwi travellers with quality medical cover and heard plenty of horror stories along the way. Here are five of the highest recent medical claims we’ve paid.

5 highest recent medical claims with SCTI

$150,000 hypoglycaemia in mexico.

This unlucky traveller required emergency medical care in Mexico due to their severe hypoglycaemia, resulting in a claim paid of $150,000. Thankfully, this traveller had declared their pre-existing medical condition while purchasing their policy with us.

$45,000 hospitalisation in the USA

Hospital horror stories are common in the USA, where the  cost of medical care  is notoriously expensive. Just ask this 28-year-old traveller who was admitted with severe chest pain, amounting to a claim paid for $45,000.

$42,000 fall in Switzerland

Slips and falls can happen in a flash, but can also be enough to turn your dream holiday into one you want to forget. This unlucky traveller found out the hard way after fracturing her ankle in Switzerland, resulting in a $42,000 claim paid to cover her hospitalisation and surgical treatment.

$41,000 atrial fibrillation in the USA

Another victim of high American hospital fees, this 21-year-old traveller had a $41,000 claim paid for the heart health emergency they suffered in the USA.

$31,000 surgical treatment in Indonesia

This unlucky 67-year-old traveller slipped on a sidewalk and fractured her hip in Indonesia. Their surgery and hospitalisation amounted to a total claim paid of $31,000.

What happens if you don’t pay your overseas medical bill?

With medical bills like these, it’s easy to see why uninsured travellers are playing a risky game. But what exactly are the penalties if you can’t pay your overseas medical bill? According to  SafeTravel , if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

How to make a travel insurance claim with SCTI

If you need medical treatment overseas, there are a few things to remember to ensure a simple claim with us. You or someone acting on your behalf will need to contact Southern Cross Emergency Assistance if you need to be admitted to a hospital, require surgical treatment, or you’re told or expect that your medical expenses will exceed $2,000. Our team will clearly outline the necessary steps you need to take and be on constant standby should you need assistance. When you’re ready, making a claim with us is easy. The best way to make a claim is to register with  My SCTI  , where you can manage your policy and make and track claims, all in one secure location. You can also  make a claim  on our website, email  [email protected] , or chat with our 24/7 online assistant, Scout.

Visiting more than one country?

If you’re visiting multiple destinations, you can travel with confidence knowing that our International Comprehensive travel insurance Policy covers you for journeys of up to 12 months, across multiple destinations.

If you’re planning on taking several trips a year, our Annual Multi-Trip policy might be a more cost (and time) effective choice than shopping around for travel insurance every time you travel. You can choose to have journeys covered up to a maximum of 30, 60 or 90-day in length.

Travel insurance- medibank private

Has anyone used medibank private travel insurance? Going through old threads I can't see much mention of it, lots about covermore and a few others I can't remember the names of. The only reason I am considering Medibank is that I work for them (not in the insurance side though!) so I get a pretty big discount. Other one I'd be interested in is Australia Post travel insurance as hubby I think gets a discount with that.

I haven't used Medibank or Aus Post, my big question is who underwrites it. Both of those are underwritten by the same insurer, so check who gives you the biggest discount between the two.

possum52

We have used Medibank Travel Insurance on two cruises. They were very easy to deal with and fortunately we didn't have to make a claim. For our next cruise though we found Medibank very expensive so have gone with Insure and Go.

Yep you never look at who you are buying it from - you look at the overall underwriter.

Royalty X

Medibank specialises in medical insurance and Australia Post is a post office. I always go with a dedicated travel insurer (that's all they do). We buy Covermore and find it most affordable to buy a multi annual policy. :)

Thank you all, both same underwriter also underwrites covermore, similar in price pre discount and covers basically the same things.

I didn't look at who else they underwrote, if then you get a GOOD discount from both Medbank and Aus Post, go for the biggest discount.

This may provide another bit of coverage to look at when buying travel insurance.

It seems many policies provide coverage for the excesses when renting vehicles. Far far far far cheaper than the rip offs by the rental companies.

Do the research, check the underwriter, the terms and conditions, the excesses, the overall cost, and if possible, word of mouth on how they are to deal with, not just on buying insurance but also on claiming.

That said, I have used several differing companies and most have either QBE or Zurich as the underwriter, for me they have paid all reasonable claims so far.:D

No matter who the underwriter is, or if you've used them before check the inclusions and more importantly the exclusions.

Some companies sell a few different policies with different inclusions, or an underwriter will sell through a few outlets with different inclusions nad they are always tweeking the wordings and inclusions to maximise profits, so always check.

Thank you GUT I will absolutely check out the inclusions and exclusions having been caught out this way with home insurance in the past where they refused to pay a claim for damage (apparently a fire needs to have flames, I was not covered for smouldering heat that caused over $1000 worth of damage!) TBH I don't trust any of them much, all about maximizing profits in my opinion!

Of course it's about maximising profits, it's a business not a charity, but you need to be very careful to check that what you are buying suits you, the one I love is the distinction between flood and storm.

Having previously worked for medibank their staff discount for travel insurance is very good. I have used them on many occasions , for policies from 2 weeks to three months, when I worked for them and when I left. I have had to make claims and their process was very easy. I found their inclusions comprehensive and good.

That being said I have also used other providers, it is amazing the price variation you can get. I have been quoted a different price by the same insurer(not medibank) for the same policy when I went directly to their website versus going via an add on Google.

500+ Club

We previously used Covermore because we could pay an additional premium to be covered for a pre-existing condition. We have made 2 unrelated claims for a Doctor's visit onboard Princess and were paid with no problems.

Our last 2 policies have been with Medibank Private and I have noticed that the questions asked about pre-existing are IDENTICAL to Covermore and Australia Post.

The reason we went with Medibank Private (MP) is we are members and they were cheaper. With MP, the cover for cancellation is UNLIMITED whereas with Covermore you have to state upfront the estimated cost of the trip and this seems to significantly increase the cost of the premium.

As we have recently been doing longer (more expensive) cruises and making final payment many weeks prior to sailing, MP was the better option for us. Our current policy is an annual one.

Is the Zurich through your CC Mic?     Sent from my iPad using Forums

It is but it was QBE, I have also used other insurers for domestic cruises which have used either.:D

awesome girl

Can someone give me some names of insurance companies who cover

over 75s my dear lad has just turned that, it looks to me as if it is going

to be a bit of a headache. We have always gone with suresave, but we are

members of Cota not sure if they cater for over 75s.:)

APIA specialises in "mature aged" travellers with pre existing conditions etc. Have seen several reviews of good feedback on Trip Advisor.

I could only suggest googling "travel insurance over 75 Australia", and go to actual insurance sites. Many of the google results are comparison sites, and I just tried one for another travel insurance research and I knew none of the companies they listed.

It appears that Aust Post recently changed their provider. They are now through Great Lakes Australia, which eventually is under Munich Re Group.

http://policy.poweredbycovermore.com/partners/aupost/files/documents/pds/AUSPOST-Comprehensive.pdf

The pds is "powered by covermore". Wow, that is a lot of different companies getting a cut! See page 16 of the document (or page 9 of the pdf)

Found this on the web site also. Specifically about cruise insurance! http://auspost.com.au/travel-id/cruise-travel-insurance.html

I know Australian Seniors Insurance has travel insurance but not sure what the premium for 75+ is. They had similar inclusions/exclusions to other companies we looked at. I don't remember who is the underwriter though.

My mum and dad are in their late 80's and are still cruising. Dad had a heart attack and by pass nearly 2 years ago. When I speak to them I'll check which company they use for insurance.
