BOAT CRUISES FROM STONEHAVEN HARBOUR 

Stonehaven runs a fleet of Vaal Boat River Cruises from the Stonehaven Harbour and proudly boasts SAMSA (South African Maritime Safety Association) Certificates for all of their Vessels. Before you book a cruise on any inland waters in South Africa, make sure the Operator is able to show you SAMSA certificates. It is now compulsory for all Commercial Cruiser operators to have these safety certificates – if they do not, the safety of the vessel you are using is not assured and there will be no public liability cover on these vessels either. Let us know if you would like us to forward a copy of Stonehaven’s cruiser certificates to you.

“The Spirit of Jen” is the most luxurious Vaal Cruiser in Gauteng that a takes a minimum of 40 passengers and a maximum of 150 passengers seated or 200 passengers with a Cocktail setup (subject to COVID-19 social distancing regulations and crowd gathering restrictions).

It is the largest, fastest and most extravagant Cruiser on the Vaal River. It has an enclosed bottom deck with large sliding windows, a fitted bar, 6 ladies/gents, Bose music/PA System, conference facilities and an open top deck with sun loungers and a Jacuzzi. The Captain will invite your VIP’s up to his private bar in the Captain’s Bridge for a complimentary sherry and relaxation on the antique leather lounge suite.

This Cruiser is able to travel to the Barrage and back in only 3 hours, so you are able to view and experience all of the best magnificent homes down Millionaire’s Mile. It is a very interesting luxury River Cruise, as apposed to just river cruising past barren land.

“The Royal Stonehaven” is an upmarket, classic Cruiser that takes a minimum of 15 passengers and up to 45 passengers seated (subject to COVID-19 social distancing regulations and crowd gathering restrictions). The enclosed bottom deck has large sliding windows, music/PA system, conference facilities, 3 ladies/gents, alongside mooring facilities, open top deck with sun loungers and a Jacuzzi.It is priced on a perperson rate.

The three well-presented ladies and gents toilets. These are normal flush toilets (not chemical). They flush into a contained area in the hull. The contents there in are then pumped out on land into a normal waste system.

The top deck is open to maximize the birding and sunbathing features. There is a 6-person Jacuzzi and sun loungers on this deck. The Royal Stonehaven has alongside mooring facilities for speedboats & jet skis should you wish to ski or Jet Ski during your River Cruise.

The Vaal Cruise and cuisine offered is perfectly designed to impress overseas visiting business people, tourist and VIP’s. Unique Wedding Ceremonies & Receptions are also a feature on board. Conferences are offered too, with full audiovisual facilities including a proxima. Corporate Marine Dining and personal celebrations are perfect to celebrate on The Royal Stonehaven. Our my most beloved venue in the Vaal. Just everything is top class. Beautiful manicured lawn and pretty setting with a lovely view. They have swimming pool and a cute beach too. Boat cruises are available and I can definitely recommend the Sunday lunch on... Spirit of Jen. Perfect for all ages. The restaurant has a wide variety of fresh scrumptious food. I have never had a bad meal there. Service too is outstanding and staff are well trained. The selection of draught beer is also one of the best in South Africa. Altogether a lovely day out just 40mins from Johannesburg. More

Took my Wife for a picnic at Stonehaven on vaal. From the moment we arrived the staff were exceptional. Everything was ready and look very beautiful, The service was prompt and friendly, we always had someone checking on us and making sure we were looked... after. It was a great afternoon and this Picnic was value for money, there was so much food, we had to bring some of it home. This is well worth it. The stew days special is recommendable, with a soup starter and a hot malva pudding! The portions are acceptable, and be hungry when you visit. Great combination of specials. Me and my family went to have dinner at Stonehaven on vaal and was served cold food told waiter he didn't care called for manger no manger came. But I still had to pay R150 for cold crappy food im sorry you wont see me... again. I can get cheaper food a villa verde and 100 times better maybe go there for dinner one evening to see how food should be cooked More

We went for lunch yesterday and both ordered steak. We both ordered rump steaks cooked medium, but both were tough and cooked well done. The pieces of meat did not look like rump either, more likely a cheap cut of unknown beef. The cheese sauce... side was awful and no flavor, more like lumpy white sauce. Service was slow and not attentive. Such a lovely setting and great for a day trip out of Joburg, but food is not a strength at this venue. More

If you are a local traveller with an appreciation of adhering to our requirements for the the "new normal" of which requires strict Covid 19 regulatory rules must be applied, then save yourself the stress and worry and do not go on boat cruises at... Stonehaven on Vaal. There is no Covid 19 regulatory practices and the likeliness is their establishment is under scrutiny at the moment, I would suggest they put the regulations in place to avoid a pending shut down. The food is delicious, but the wait is something else, with very poor table service. Please work on you table service,have your waiters trained to check on the patrons and inform them about delays in meal delivery, so as to improve their experience My first experience there was wonderful, my last...is my last. Stonehaven is right on the river edge, with cafe style seating on the grass, overlooking the mighty Vaal river. The ambience is very relaxed; a perfect way to end off the day or pop in for lunch either solo or with mates. The menu is... quite varied, with the majority of the offering being cafe/pub food, which complements the surroundings nicely. I had the snack basket which consists of cocktail sausages, ribs, wings, chicken nuggets & chips. Very fairly priced for the amount of food I had. It does get quite busy, especially on weekends and after work hours, so patience is a virtue here! More

Everything in stonehaven its breath of fresh air from the warm welcome at the entrance to the ever smiling security at parking lot, You feel important & most importantly you feel safe. I recently broke my leg and was confined to a wheelchair on this visit. Stonehaven staff were extremely friendly and obliging, giving us priority parking right near the gate. They have their own wheelchair although I used my own. The dining area, bar and toilets,... as well as the path to the river were all wheelchair friendly. We had a great evening (my first outing in six weeks). My husband loves their home brewed Stromness ales on tap, and we ate their signature peri peri chicken livers and excellent steak. The place exudes a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Great for a trip from Joeys with the kids - boat rides are a must! More

We had a breakfast and it was average at best. Vivian (our server) was great but the food was lackluster. The waffles were clearly not made from fresh batter. The cappuccinos were more like warm milk with a hint of coffee. We had to ask... for extra shots and even then they were weak. The vista has potential but the lawns were taken over by events and it ruined the view from the balcony tables. More

We booked the Sunday lunch cruise for our 35th wedding anniversary and what a treat. Very helpful and organised admin staff who arranged all the extras requested - even extras arranged via friends for our cruise. The person welcoming us on the boat, took us... to our table, with personalised welcome and congratulations. Food was also good (too much). A lot of photos were taken, with this memory that will stay with us for years to come. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! More

The place warn refreshing and great to be there. The food is mouth watering and service of Waiter Vivian was excellent. Heard about this place on the river that is dog friendly - so took a drive down. It is quite a pleasant drive. Not only dog friendly, but they even have individual little seats your dog can enjoy lying on next to your table and... even a doggie menu. Both 4-legged and 2-legged enjoyed our meals heartily!! You get searched at the gate, never a great welcome when that happens in these times. You don't go to Stonehaven on the Vaal for the food. I ordered the chicken, it was not freshly cooked. The chicken was hard having been reheated, inside was... cold like it was heated on a flatop or microwave. The French fires were not cooked and looked it. Chickens strip ordered for the children were just as bad. Cooked until it was dead and dry like biltong. Sauces looks like it's mass produced. Service was slow. Don't go for the food, go for the view More

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon.
