In addition to generating significant economic impacts in terms of GDP and jobs, OTAs benefit the accommodation markets in both the United States and Canada (North America) through downward effects on rates and by expanding the number of room nights available to consumers.

This study conducted by Tourism Economics for Booking.com quantifies the incremental impact of online travel agencies on the tourism industries and broader economies of the United States and Canada. The number of travellers organizing travel through online travel agencies (OTAs) increased steadily from 2012 to 2019 to 724 million nights, which represented almost 1 in 4 nights booked in North America – a proportion of these nights and associated economic benefits would not have happened without the trusted information, transparency and choice provided by OTAs.

All travel bookings fell sharply during the pandemic, including some shifts in OTA use resulting in a lower impact on the tourism market and the broader economy in 2020 and 2021. OTAs still play an important role in matching evolving consumer demand with available supply.

Don’t Expect a Huge Crisis Bounceback for Online Travel Agencies This Time

The online travel space has always been super-competitive, but established players like Expedia Group and Booking Holdings face a growing roster of formidable competitors, including hotels, Google and Airbnb.

For major online travel agencies, their competitive position and outlook is way different in 2022 than in the aftermath of 9/11 and the end of the Great Recession in 2009.

A couple of travel research brands, Skift Research and Bernstein, agree that the future will be much more challenging for the online travel agency sector.

In a December Skift podcast, Booking Site Winners and Losers, which featured Skift Research’s Seth Borko and myself, Borko said online travel agencies recovered robustly after 9/11 in 2001 and the financial crisis of 2007 to 2009 as hotels needed the big online travel agencies to help them fill rooms.

But it’s different now.

“Hotels have maintained pricing power, and ADRs (Average Daily Rates) are nearly 90 percent recovered,” Borko said, referring to competitive dynamics at the end of 2021 and adding that the extent of the hotel recovery depends on the region. “OTAs’ reputation for discounting has suffered as hotel direct bookings come with lower rates. And customers have more to spend.”

Borko, who covered much of this subject in a recent Skift Research Online Travel Agency Factbook, said this time, during the pandemic, the online travel agencies aren’t getting the same lift they did after past crises.

“Although they are recovering quite fast, it was not quite the boon to OTAs that many thought it might have been because it wasn’t quite a repeat of the last two crises,” Borko said.

Borko said the online travel agencies’ gross bookings and commissions have largely recovered relative to pre-pandemic 2019, setting themselves up to make gains.

“The problem is on the cost side,” Borko said. They’ve driven themselves into a huge hole on profitability. While revenue is coming back, EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) and other profits are not coming back as quickly.”

He argued that the online travel agencies’ margin levels won’t rebound as quickly as their gross bookings have.

Hotels chains such as Marriott and Hilton were very aggressive in pushing direct booking campaigns from 2017 to 2019. Expedia countered to a degree, downgrading branded properties in favor of independents.

Although the hotels’ frequent TV and other brand advertising of recent year promoting direct bookings have diminished, Borko warned that “channel wars are coming back” in the next few years.

In other words, as online travel agencies try to regain their profit momentum, hotels won’t sit idly by in the contest for traveler eyeballs.

Bernstein, in its new report, Online Travel Agencies: “A Rough Guide to Online Travel,” is perhaps a tad more pessimistic about the future of online travel agencies, although Bernstein believes they will be around for some time.

“That we, lodging analysts rather than internet analysts, are the authors of this  Blackbook  is telling,” the report said. “These are no longer 30%+ growth disruptors, but rather established players in travel, in competition with their underlying product and themselves being disrupted by tech intrusion, notably from Google and Airbnb . Our central thesis is that the core business (i.e., hotel distribution/metasearch) is a slowing opportunity, as the previous tailwinds of online penetration, share gains from direct distribution, and share gains from competitors abate or even reverse.”

The consensus relative bullishness about the online travel agencies “is too positive on the path ahead,” Bernstein said.

Among the trends, there will be

Hotel OTA revenue growth is set to slow from a 23% CAGR in 2010-19 to mid-single-digits post Covid-19, with branded hotels notably taking back control of their distribution. Other opportunities in travel exist, but these face tougher competition (e.g., against Airbnb), are lower take rate/margin (flight, package, B2B, etc.) or are small market opportunities (e.g., car hire and cruise). OTAs are going nowhere — for certain customers and suppliers, they provide a highly valuable service; but our analysis suggests the consensus view is too positive on the path ahead. 

Among the the trends, there will be “market share shifts to direct bookings, and a refragmentation of the OTA market, with Google, Airbnb, and Hopper creating a more challenging competitive landscape than ever before,” Bernstein said. “Growth going forward, where achievable, will be from either new verticals, competing more aggressively on price, or from taking share from each other.”

In particular, Bernstein predicted that Booking Holdings will “underperform,” and it classified Expedia Group as “market perform.”

“The key difference is we expect Booking to disappoint earlier, with consensus margins too high in the shorter term, whereas with Expedia we see more revenue over risk the longer term,” Bernstein said.

Both Expedia Group and Booking Holdings declined to comment on the Bernstein report.

The debate on the future of the online travel agencies is nothing new. In the aftermath of a weak second half off 2019 for Expedia Group, which led to the ouster of the CEO at the end of the year, speculation was rife that the online travel agencies would be playing a weak hand because of Google’s incursions in online travel.

Meanwhile, Airbnb had its best ever third quarter last year.

At Skift Global Forum in September, I asked Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi , a former Expedia CEO and current board member, about an earlier Bernstein report that was likewise unenthusiastic about the future of online travel agencies.

“Well, I think the return will be boom time and then it’ll be up to the OTAs to create their own booms,” he said.

That will be the stiff challenge for online travel agencies: to create new and lucrative revenue streams, perhaps in fintech and elsewhere, to accelerate growth and get those margins expanding again.

What should i do if i think my passport is lost in the mail.

  • Use the  Online Passport Status System  to confirm if we mailed your passport. 
  • Contact us if you have not received your passport two weeks after we mailed it.

If you do not report your passport lost in 90 days after we issued it, you must apply again and pay all fees.

Should I report my passport lost or stolen if it has expired?

No. If your passport expired, it is no longer valid and you cannot use it for international travel. You should not report an expired passport as lost or stolen.

Can someone travel using only my passport number?

No. No one can travel using only a U.S. passport number. You must present an original, physical version of a passport to travel.

The passport book and card have many security features to prevent successful counterfeiting. 

You should only report your valid U.S. passport lost or stolen if the physical document is lost or stolen. Once you report a U.S. passport lost or stolen, it is no longer valid and you cannot use it for international travel.

What should I do if I find someone else's passport?

If you find another person's lost U.S. passport, please mail it in a sturdy envelope to:

How do I cancel the passport of a deceased relative?

You can return the passport of a deceased relative for cancelation. After we cancel it, we will return the passport.

Can I travel if I find my passport after reporting it lost or stolen?

No. If you reported your passport lost or stolen, it is no longer valid. You cannot use it for international travel. If you try to use the passport you reported as lost or stolen, you may have issues traveling. For example, a foreign country may deny entry to you.

If you want to travel after reporting your passport lost or stolen, apply for a new passport using Form DS-11.

Trip.com announced Bloomberg Terminal Tuesday an offering of $1.3 billion convertible senior notes due in 2029 to help repay debt, expand overseas and for working capital needs. To ease any dilution effect, the company plans to repurchase 6 million American depository shares for about $300 million at $50.16 each, the same as the latest close, according to a separate statement on the bond pricing Wednesday.

Top online travel agencies

Based on Cloudbeds’ data gathered from thousands of customer properties between 2021 (the benchmark used in our last report) and 2023, we’ve seen a remarkable pace of recovery for OTAs. While top OTAs like Booking.com, Expedia, and Airbnb have held onto their spots as the highest-revenue generating OTAs, we saw China’s Trip.com rise two spots, indicating the return of Asian travelers to the market. Here are the highest revenue-generating OTAs of 2023.

Highest revenue-generating OTAs

1. booking.com.

Booking.com is one of the largest and most popular travel websites in the world, with over 1.5 million nights booked every day. Its website and mobile apps are accessible in 43 languages and feature over 50 million verified guest reviews of properties in 200+ countries. Its parent company, Booking Holdings, includes OTA brands and metasearch engines such as Priceline.com, KAYAK, Agoda, Rentalcars.com, OpenTable and more.

Expedia.com is the flagship brand of Expedia Group, which includes 200 travel booking websites, including Hotwire, Orbitz, Trivago, and Travelocity, serving 75 countries in 35 languages with over 600 million monthly visits. The website includes searches for all types of accommodations, as well as booking flights, car rentals, cruises, and vacation packages. By activating the Expedia connection, properties will broadcast their inventory on Hotels.com, Wotif, and many other channels.

Airbnb is known for providing access to unique accommodations around the world, with the vast majority of properties located outside of main hotel districts. While the company continues to expand into hotel room inventory following its acquisition of HotelTonight (known for booking last-minute lodging), its community expects a certain type of experience. Namely, something that is less cookie-cutter and more oriented to the local vibe.

4. Hostelworld

HostelWorld is a leading OTA for hostel-focused accommodations worldwide, with 12+ million guest reviews. Their inventory also includes hotels, B&Bs, and other budget accommodation types. Hostelworld aims to be a leader in social travel via its online booking options and mobile app, addressing the needs of guests who want to make connections with others as they experience the world around them. Their app and website operate in 20 different languages.

Agoda was founded in 1998 and later acquired by the Priceline Group (now called Booking Holdings) in 2007. Agoda’s website is available in 38 languages and focuses on listing all types of properties. It’s currently one of the leading online travel booking sites for the Asian market but is pushing into the US, India, and European markets.

6. Trip.com

Trip.com is China’s leading provider of travel services including reservations for accommodation, transportation, tours, and corporate travel. Founded in 1999, the company owns and operates several other OTAs and aggregators, including Trip.com, Skyscanner, Qunar, and Ctrip. 

7. Hotelbeds

By connecting to Hotelbeds, will gain unrivaled exposure to the travel industry’s largest network of B2B buyers, including more than 71,000 tour operators, travel agents, airlines, and loyalty & points schemes which can be great for business travel. 

With over 2 million bookable vacation rentals, Vrbo caters to a diverse range of needs and preferences, offering everything from cozy, intimate cabins for romantic getaways to spacious, well-appointed villas suitable for large family reunions or group vacations.

9. Traveloka

Based in Indonesia, Traveloka is one of Asia’s largest online travel agents. Traveloka lists hundreds of thousands of properties across Southeast Asia, Australia, and around the globe. The company also provides lifestyle products and services, such as tickets to attractions, activities, car rentals, and restaurant vouchers.

10. Despegar/Decolar

Despegar/Decolar is a leading online travel company in Latin America, with Despegar functioning as the global brand and Decolar representing the brand in the Brazilian market. Their marketplace operates across 20 markets and offers a broad suite of travel products in the region, including airfare, hotel bookings, travel packages, and other travel products to a large customer base.

Based on Cloudbeds data, we’ve highlighted the OTAs that are generating the most revenue for our customers in North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.

Hostelworld has moved up on the list across multiple countries, demonstrating that demand for hostels (jumping 5 spots in Thailand and the Philippines), shared accommodations, and experiences is back. In addition, we can see the return of Asian travelers as Agoda and Trip.com rise in North America and make their first appearance on Latin American lists.

What are niche otas.

Niche OTAs are online travel agencies catering to specific audiences and travel needs. Many niches exist today, including OTAs for skiers, campers or glampers, adventure travelers, luxury travelers, and more.

Niche platforms can be the best online travel agencies as they are built to target more specific guest segments. Once you identify what guest segments make sense for your property, you can look into local partnerships to expand your offerings to provide a more tailored experience that complements your guests’ travel plans. For example, if you have a property close to the beach, you can find local surf instructors to partner with and offer lessons through your booking engine to attract surfers. Spotlight – LGBTQIA+ OTAS

The global LGBTQIA+ travel market is valued at over $568.5 billion USD annually . While many countries have become increasingly welcoming to the queer community, discrimination is still prevalent today. A Booking.com study revealed that 58% of LGBTQ+ travelers face discrimination while traveling, and 41% canceled a trip within the past year after seeing their destination wasn’t LGBTQ+ friendly.

FACT SHEET: President   Biden Announces New Actions to Secure the   Border

New actions will bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum Biden taking action as Congressional Republicans put partisan politics ahead of national security, twice voting against toughest reforms in decades

Since his first day in office, President Biden has called on Congress to secure our border and address our broken immigration system. Over the past three years, while Congress has failed to act, the President has acted to secure our border. His Administration has deployed the most agents and officers ever to address the situation at the Southern border, seized record levels of illicit fentanyl at our ports of entry, and brought together world leaders on a framework to deal with changing migration patterns that are impacting the entire Western Hemisphere.  Earlier this year, the President and his team reached a historic bipartisan agreement with Senate Democrats and Republicans to deliver the most consequential reforms of America’s immigration laws in decades. This agreement would have added critical border and immigration personnel, invested in technology to catch illegal fentanyl, delivered sweeping reforms to the asylum system, and provided emergency authority for the President to shut down the border when the system is overwhelmed. But Republicans in Congress chose to put partisan politics ahead of our national security, twice voting against the toughest and fairest set of reforms in decades. President Biden believes we must secure our border. That is why today, he announced executive actions to bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum. These actions will be in effect when high levels of encounters at the Southern Border exceed our ability to deliver timely consequences, as is the case today. They will make it easier for immigration officers to remove those without a lawful basis to remain and reduce the burden on our Border Patrol agents. But we must be clear: this cannot achieve the same results as Congressional action, and it does not provide the critical personnel and funding needed to further secure our Southern border. Congress still must act. The Biden-Harris Administration’s executive actions will:   Bar Migrants Who Cross the Southern Border Unlawfully From Receiving Asylum

  • President Biden issued a proclamation under Immigration and Nationality Act sections 212(f) and 215(a) suspending entry of noncitizens who cross the Southern border into the United States unlawfully. This proclamation is accompanied by an interim final rule from the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security that restricts asylum for those noncitizens.
  • These actions will be in effect when the Southern border is overwhelmed, and they will make it easier for immigration officers to quickly remove individuals who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States.
  • These actions are not permanent. They will be discontinued when the number of migrants who cross the border between ports of entry is low enough for America’s system to safely and effectively manage border operations. These actions also include similar humanitarian exceptions to those included in the bipartisan border agreement announced in the Senate, including those for unaccompanied children and victims of trafficking.

Recent Actions to secure our border and address our broken immigration system: Strengthening the Asylum Screening Process

  • The Department of Homeland Security published a proposed rule to ensure that migrants who pose a public safety or national security risk are removed as quickly in the process as possible rather than remaining in prolonged, costly detention prior to removal. This proposed rule will enhance security and deliver more timely consequences for those who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States.

Announced new actions to more quickly resolve immigration cases

  • The Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security launched a Recent Arrivals docket to more quickly resolve a portion of immigration cases for migrants who attempt to cross between ports of entry at the Southern border in violation of our immigration laws.
  • Through this process, the Department of Justice will be able to hear these cases more quickly and the Department of Homeland Security will be able to more quickly remove individuals who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States and grant protection to those with valid claims.
  • The bipartisan border agreement would have created and supported an even more efficient framework for issuing final decisions to all asylum seekers. This new process to reform our overwhelmed immigration system can only be created and funded by Congress.

Revoked visas of CEOs and government officials who profit from migrants coming to the U.S. unlawfully

  • The Department of State imposed visa restrictions on executives of several Colombian transportation companies who profit from smuggling migrants by sea. This action cracks down on companies that help facilitate unlawful entry into the United States, and sends a clear message that no one should profit from the exploitation of vulnerable migrants.
  • The State Department also imposed visa restrictions on over 250 members of the Nicaraguan government, non-governmental actors, and their immediate family members for their roles in supporting the Ortega-Murillo regime, which is selling transit visas to migrants from within and beyond the Western Hemisphere who ultimately make their way to the Southern border.
  • Previously, the State Department revoked visas of executives of charter airlines for similar actions.

Expanded Efforts to Dismantle Human Smuggling and Support Immigration Prosecutions

  • The Departments of State and Justice launched an “Anti-Smuggling Rewards” initiative designed to dismantle the leadership of human smuggling organizations that bring migrants through Central America and across the Southern U.S. border. The initiative will offer financial rewards for information leading to the identification, location, arrest, or conviction of those most responsible for significant human smuggling activities in the region.
  • The Department of Justice will seek new and increased penalties against human smugglers to properly account for the severity of their criminal conduct and the human misery that it causes.
  • The Department of Justice is also partnering with the Department of Homeland Security to direct additional prosecutors and support staff to increase immigration-related prosecutions in crucial border U.S. Attorney’s Offices. Efforts include deploying additional DHS Special Assistant United States Attorneys to different U.S. Attorneys’ offices, assigning support staff to critical U.S. Attorneys’ offices, including DOJ Attorneys to serve details in U.S. Attorneys’ Offices in several border districts, and partnering with federal agencies to identify additional resources to target these crimes.

Enhancing Immigration Enforcement

  • The Department of Homeland Security has surged agents to the Southern border and is referring a record number of people into expedited removal.
  • The Department of Homeland Security is operating more repatriation flights per week than ever before. Over the past year, DHS has removed or returned more than 750,000 people, more than in every fiscal year since 2010.
  • Working closely with partners throughout the region, the Biden-Harris Administration is identifying and collaborating on enforcement efforts designed to stop irregular migration before migrants reach our Southern border, expand investment and integration opportunities in the region to support those who may otherwise seek to migrate, and increase lawful pathways for migrants as an alternative to irregular migration.

Seizing Fentanyl at our Border

  • Border officials have seized more fentanyl at ports of entry in the last two years than the past five years combined, and the President has added 40 drug detection machines across points of entry to disrupt the fentanyl smuggling into the Homeland. The bipartisan border agreement would fund the installation of 100 additional cutting-edge inspection machines to help detect fentanyl at our Southern border ports of entry.
  • In close partnership with the Government of Mexico, the Department of Justice has extradited Nestor Isidro Perez Salaz, known as “El Nini,” from Mexico to the United States to face prosecution for his role in illicit fentanyl trafficking and human rights abuses. This is one of many examples of joint efforts with Mexico to tackle the fentanyl and synthetic drug epidemic that is killing so many people in our countries and globally, and to hold the drug trafficking organizations to account.
