LONDON GRAMMAR

Eleven years after London Grammar’s double platinum-selling debut If You Wait, the band release their fourth album, The Greatest Love. It’s a celebration of creative freedom for a group who’ve carved a unique path, performing to stadium crowds while swerving celebrity. Having sold 3 million albums world-wide, with two #1 selling records, an Ivor Novello win and numerous BRIT Award nominations under their belts, Hannah Reid, Dan Rothman and Dot Major have enjoyed rare longevity and success for three musicians who met as teenagers at university. ‘Getting to this point is the proudest achievement of my life,’ says frontwoman and songwriter Hannah.

With this triumphant start to their second decade in the industry, they have doubled down on their musical instincts and found rebellious new confidence. ‘The last couple of years have changed our priorities and process as artists,’ says Hannah. ‘That is a big part of our story.’

As a young band keen to find their audience, they had held nothing back in promoting 2013’s game-changing If You Wait and 2017 follow-up Truth Is a Beautiful Thing , which hit number one. ‘It was drummed into us early that you had to kill yourself on the road if you wanted to get anywhere, and that is true, to an extent,’ says Hannah, who recently welcomed her first child. ‘If it starts coming at the cost of the creative process, though, there’s no point in doing any of it.’

Hannah lives with the chronic pain condition fibromyalgia, which can be triggered by stress. In the build-up to their third album, Californian Soil , she was focused on preserving her energy in preparation for promoting the record. ‘We were so geared up to release it,’ she recalls. ‘I knew I’d have to get through a lot of shows, so I’d got myself really fit and healthy – but then lockdown hit. Suddenly we had no idea whether we’d be able to tour.’

Their uncertainty about the future was a wake-up call. ‘It felt possible that we might not do another gig for years. We had to ask ourselves: if we’re not touring, what do we want to do?’

The question was revelatory. ‘We realised that writing songs, and making art that makes us happy, is actually the job,’ says Hannah. ‘Nothing else really matters.’ Californian Soil had explored her experiences of misogyny in music, but now that the band had more unscheduled time to talk, she realised that Dan and Dot had also been bruised by the industry. ‘It had made all three of us insecure in different ways, but suddenly we were spending hours making music and talking – it was like band therapy.’

‘In the past we’ve been surrounded by very masculine behaviour, and it became problematic,’ agrees Dan. ‘I think Dot and I are part of the generation of men who’ve crossed over and become more conscious of how that behaviour affected us and rubbed off on us – and that awareness has helped us to become happier as a band.’

Californian Soil was released in 2021 and became another number-one album; once restrictions eased, the band performed their biggest UK tour to date, including two gigs at Alexandra Palace for which they sold 35,000 tickets in a day. They went on to play to over 700,000 fans on Coldplay’s 2022 stadium tour.

Now they return with The Greatest Love , the fruit of a joyfully creative period. It delivers the heartrending lyrics and celestial vocals that London Grammar fans adore, but includes moments of real freedom and celebration. Opening track House sets the tone. Over a driving beat – set to fill dancefloors all year – comes an uncompromising lyric: This is my place, my house, my rules. ‘It’s about drawing boundaries around yourself,’ says Hannah, who is now thirty-four. ‘When I hit my thirties, my mindset shifted, and I no longer felt like a victim of anything – it all felt within my power. I thought, making music should be fun, and we’re gonna make that happen.’

The London Grammar sound is as genre-blending as ever, moving smoothly from electronica to pop. The album’s second track, Fakest Bitch, is a ballad accompanied by stripped-back piano and guitar – yet its razor-sharp lyrics provide a satisfying contrast. Don’t turn to me with the driest tears that you’ve been faking for years, sings Hannah, addressing a (fictional) frenemy with that immaculate voice. She’s ‘obsessed’ with the track, she says; it was written in an hour, and features the original demo vocal. ‘It also makes me a little uncomfortable, which I think is a good sign,’ she laughs. ‘It came out so quickly, and the lyrics are savage but some of my best.’

London Grammar produced the majority of the album themselves. ‘When we were a young band, we found magic with older, very experienced producers, and that was important – we learnt a lot,’ she says. ‘But now we’re becoming those people, and that means that we can be really prolific and self-reliant.’ The band trust their own judgement more: ‘We no longer care what anyone else thinks. If we love it, we do it.’

That’s why they defiantly named the album after its final track The Greatest Love , a song that represents a newfound confidence in their craft. ‘That song is like a symbol of us believing in ourselves,’ says Dan. ‘When we first worked on it, we came out of the studio like, “This is the best thing we’ve ever done!”

The production of You and I , a letter to Hannah’s younger self with an epic Ibizan-sunset sound that’s reminiscent of the late Nineties, also helped them lean into their instincts. ‘It’s about things that I wish I’d known. I wrote it six or seven years ago, and at the time, it was written off,’ she says. ‘When we came across it again, we couldn’t believe that. We really went for it, with strings and a children’s choir – and I love it.’

The three band members all have independent projects, which has enhanced the music they make together: Hannah paints and writes songs; Dot is a DJ who releases electronic music; and Dan produces several other artists. ‘I think those outlets for self-expression have helped us become more experimental,’ says Hannah.

‘If you think of us as a Venn diagram, what we’ve learnt is to nurture our crossover point,’ says Dot. ‘This album feels to me like a celebration of our friendship.’

London Grammar enjoy an enormous fanbase. Their music has been streamed more than a billion times – but they never aspired to be famous. ‘We were exposed to celebrity with the success of the first album, when we were really young,’ says Dan. ‘We probably overindulged, but we quickly realised that personality wise, it wasn’t for us.’

Hannah agrees. ‘This album is probably the last time that we’ll appear in our music videos,’ she says. She’s delighted by the balance that they’ve found as a band. ‘I love the fact that I can walk down the street and nobody knows who I am – and yet we can fill huge spaces with people who love our music. We’ve worked really, really hard, and it has paid off.’

The future looks bright. ‘I want us to keep making music together until we’re old, wrinkly and completely irrelevant,’ she jokes. ‘As long as we prioritise the art, there is no reason why we can’t go on for decades.’

Der Song "You and I" reflektiert über Dinge, die Hannah ihrem jüngeren Ich gerne gesagt hätte.

Alle drei Bandmitglieder verfolgen auch unabhängige Projekte, was ihrer gemeinsamen Musik zugutekommt.

Hammer-Konzert!!!

Klasse, was die drei in Hamburg abgeliefert hatten.

Endorsing an electronic pop, fused with ambience and melancholy are London Grammar, who formed in 2011 and have since achieved a platinum record certification by the British Phonographic Industry Association, for their debut, “If You Wait”.

Originally from London, singer Hannah Reid and guitarist, Dan Rothman met in the halls of the University of Nottingham. The two started to collaborate, and were joined by Dominic “Dot” Major, on keyboard, djembe and drums the following year.

Together, the band moved to the capital to pursue a career as a band. They gained management and promotion, building up their support playing gigs at bars, working on their material. It wasn’t long before A&Rs were knocking on their doors, and they were later signed to Ministry of Sound. In their early career, they collaborated with Rollo Armstrong from Faithless and Liam How from Sneaker Pimps. It was on December 12th 2012 that the trio uploaded “Hey Now” to YouTube receiving critical acclaim, and plenty of attention.

The single “Wasting My Young Years” in June 2013 saw the single rise to 31 on the UK Singles Chart, they also collaborated with Disclosure on the song “Help Me Lose My Mind”, which was released the same month. The album, “If You Wait” followed the released of their song “Strong”, which made it to number 16 on the UK Singles Chart. “If You Wait”, released on September 9th 2013, sold upwards of 33,000 units in its first week, and made it to number 2 in the UK and Australia.

They have had their music feature on the Dior advertisement, have played “Strong” and “Wasting My Younger Years” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon which was their debut on American television, and have won an Ivor Novello Award in the Best Song Musically and Lyrically category for “Strong”.

London Grammar - Hannah Reid is Sam Smith's female equivalent in terms of the BEST vocals in the UK right now. What a talented bunch they are. So another outstanding gig. It seems the music scene is pretty safe right now with a lot of super talented up and coming artists and bands. I think that i’ll begin with someone called Nick Mulvey. Well, what an amazingly talented guy he is. He came on stage as the second support act and the applause from the audience already gave us a clue that he was going to be good. I remember looking at the time and seeing that there was 45 minutes until London Grammar appeared and that I wouldn’t have minded one bit if he played for those 45 minutes. His passion and talent shine right through just by his voice alone, let alone his outstanding guitar playing. His band were also brilliant but I have to mention his double bass and bass guitar player. Another one whose skill and passion is shown through the way he played. If I had the opportunity to see Nick Mulvey again I would jump at the chance and dare you too also. Now onto London Grammar. A performance that left me speechless. Before they appeared, the crowd was already cheering and clapping and if that doesn’t create an atmosphere then I don’t know what does. The stunning vocals from Hannah Reid, awesome guitar playing from Dan Rothman and, one of the most skilled musicians I can think of; Dot Major all make up the lovely band. The piano playing, drum machine and the coolest drum solo all come from Dot which blew me away. Not forgetting that each member of London Grammar is insanely talented and, I’m pretty sure, have perfected what they do. I also have to mention the stunning light show that happened I think for every song. Out of the gigs I’ve been to, this one had the most incredible lighting. Their album is absolutely beautiful and although it’s impossible to pick a favourite, there’s one song that gets me every time and I almost shed a tear at the gig to ‘Sights’. It is the most beautiful and delicate song and speaks to me through the gorgeous chords used and I can’t put it into words how they do it, but it’s the chorus that gets me. There was a brilliant remix of a song they recorded with Disclosure ; ‘Help Me Lose My Mind’ which, I’m sure, put a smile on everyone’s faces. It seems that all the talent at the moment has occurred in the space of a year – Ella Eyre, Sam Smith, Gorgon City, Naughty Boy, just to mention a few. There were also about 6 violinists and cellists cleverly hidden away behind the band until they were needed, then a light shone on them and they owned the venue with the band. Overall it has to be the calmest gig I’ve ever been to and I thoroughly loved every minute of it and would do it again in the blink of an eye. Credit and thanks to London Grammar, Nick Mulvey and the rest of the musicians and crew. A lovely night and hope to see both of them again. By Amba Pattison

Perfect! They were perfect , I've been to many concerts before , but this is the first time i enjoy a live performance more then recorded songs ! It was such an amazing and emotional performance ! While waiting outside BIEL, I heard one of the staff who watched them training on stage earlier that day saying : " This is the first time i witness a voice that is better live than recorded !" And I couldn't wait to see it happen ! He was right , we could see it from the crowd singing with Hannah , she just closed her eyes and smiled ! It was one of the best moments ! I believe they enjoyed their performance in Beirut as much as we all did . Another amazing moment was when , I was standing right in front of Dan staring at him and his guitar for a while and smiling , and he looked at me for a few seconds then he smiled and continued performing ! I know he doesn't remember it , but it was magical ! I do appreciate artists down to earth !! I even had the chance to meet them backstage and give them portraits i've drawn , and I was extremely happy , they reacted amazingly to the drawings , it made me feel so special and lucky!

I did the impossible to go to that concert , That I will never ever forget ! The music , The voice and the lighting ! perfect ! everything was perfect and not even one mistake . They used lighting in such an amazing way , it went very well with the music , and one of the best performances was metal & dust ( though it's not my favorite song) but the way they played it with drums and passion and amazingly warm stunning performance made it one of my Favorites songs that night ! Thank you London Grammar , Radio One , Poliakov vodka and whoever made this concert possible , Not to forget the Lebanese Band : MASHROU' LEILA !! Proud to be lebanese , Maria , ...

London Grammar sounded better live than they do on their CD and they totally blew me away! I’ve had their album for a while and sort of casually listened to it but only really latched on to a few of their songs. However, seeing them live was a completely different experience and it’s made me go back and re-listen to the album with a new appreciation for the music.

The first thing that really rose the bar for me was how flawless Hannah’s voice sounded. Sometimes when you see an artist live, they sound pitchy or just not quite like they do on a CD after all the editing, but Hannah never hit a bum note. Her voice is so rich and inviting that I was mesmerized. Dot really impressed me as well with the range of instruments he plays from different drums to the keyboard and Dan’s guitar provided a strong base for all their songs. To really round out the sound, they also revealed, after a few songs, a small group of violinists that added immense depth to the entire musical balance.

But the music wasn’t just the amazing part. They also had a ridiculously amazing light show, which just immersed me further in the music, and I found myself just staring at the stage, captivated.

For those of you that are Disclosure fans don’t worry, because they also do a rendition of “Help Me Lose My Mind” in a slightly different style that was awesome. I loved all of it so much that I’ve already bought tickets to see them again this summer.

London Grammar, have risen from a small living room-music band to one of the most popular of this time. The show opened not with a lot of the glim&glam, but with the whisper of the first notes and than that deep awesome voice of hers. The show was perfect! You could feel the bass and music rushing through your veins. We didn’t get any of her covers, however, they played almost the whole album, which she did perfectly. She sings live even better than on CD. Some songs were shortened, on the other side, they made a great expansion of the intro’s. During the song ‘stay awake’ she had some gigs with the other band members. Result: laughing while singing. It was great to see that they amused themselves as well. The only downside was that it only lasted an hour, I could have listened to her all night! All in all, a great performance and I would really recommend it to all the London Grammar fans out there. As for the band; keep up the good work, waiting impatiently for more.

The old sandstone buildings and tiered lawns of the Arts Centre in Fremantle was the venue for the debut of London Grammar as headline acts. I must admit some trepidation as to whether the complexity of their sound and the power and delicacy of Hannahs voice would translate well to the live venue.

I needn't have worried as from the opening bars of rooting for you with Hannah soaring unaccompanied through occasional barrages of sound all with exceptional musicianship from Dan on guitar and Dom on everything else, this was a gig to remember. The light show though simple was used to perfection and at times was gentle, at others brutal but always effective.

They endeared with their lighthearted banter and will be craved for the impression they left this cool Saturday evening.

As I drove home listening to their cd, the music was still beautiful but now somehow unfulfilling after such a powerful performance and leaves me impatient for the next time they visit.

Awesome job guys.

London Grammar is a trio of artists. They create a sound between the melancholic and the obscure, which brings the soul in a magic, far away world. A world dominated and enchanted by Hannah's pure voice. An universe with Dot's and Dan's perfect sound as landscape too.

They make you forget all your troubles, or better they express your inner problems in a poetic and almost mystic way. They seemed to be an only person, who dominated the scene for almost a hour and a half. They did not stop.. In order not to stop the dream too.

The acoustic support perfectly embraced Hannah's capacities, the light system was simple and effective. All was connected in an equilibrate way to offer to the 4000 people unforgettable memories.

I have to say I almost cried during "Hell to the Liars" and touched heaven with the last but not least "Metal and Dust"... My life's song, now and forever.

I was very lucky to attend the London Grammar show at Roundchapel in Hackney-tickets were very sought after as this was an intimate show-an audience of around 425 people!!The venue could not have been more perfect for the type of music London Grammar excel at...beautifully crafted ambient ballads...and the fantastic vocals of Hannah Reid sounded strong and beautiful as they echoed around this church space. They played new songs from their upcoming album as well as old established favourites like If You Wait and Strong. The band had apparently rehearsed and recorded demo,s for their new album at the Roundchapel and they did seem very comfortable in their surroundings tonight....a night to be cherished/remembered for quite awhile9/10

Great gig! Preceded by Until The Ribbon Breaks who we'd not heard of before and loved, we were excited to see London Grammar live. Thrilled that the sound of the band really accurately represented the studio album, especially the vocals of Hannah which were divine - some of the most accomplished I've heard live. Can't wait to hear more from them in 2015 and hope they return to Toronto before too long to give me a taste of home!

AMAZING!! I love these guys!

The one thing I would recommend you improve is that your sound crew needs to well, be slightly better. Your must has a lot of depth and detail and the sound was not clear. The low frequency was overloaded and sometimes blurred in quality. Overpowering the vocals in many moments. The band has spent a long time adding detail to the songs and they are not coming through clearly

The venue was a great choice for starters. The gig...well, what can I say! I had high hopes and wasn't disappointed...what a band! Hannah, Dan and Dot were superb...the subtlety and blend of the music, and the versatility and strength of Hannah's voice makes for a fantastic combination. It's what makes them so unique and compelling. Lomg may it continue...best British band for a very long time!
