The Igor Moiseyev State Academic Folk Dance Ensemble is the sole proficient choreographic group on the planet occupied with aesthetic understanding and advancement of people move old stories. The gathering was sorted out on February 10, 1937, and from that point forward the fundamental aesthetic standards of its improvement are congruity and imaginative cooperation of conventions and advancement. The fundamental assignment that the author of the group Igor Moiseyev (1906-2007) set out of the blue before the craftsmen was the innovative preparing of the examples of legends that existed at the time in the USSR. To this end, the group’s specialists went to old stories endeavors around the nation, where they found and recorded vanishing moves, melodies, customs. Subsequently, the primary projects of the gathering showed up: “Moves of the Peoples of the USSR” (1937-1938), “Moves of the Baltic people groups” (1939). In the collection of the outfit legends tests got another stage life and were safeguarded for a few ages of watchers around the globe. For this reason Igor Moiseyev utilized all methods for picturesque culture: different types and sorts of moves, symphonic music, dramaturgy, scenography, acting abilities. A critical stage was the improvement and inventive translation of European legends. The program “Moves of the Slavic Peoples” (1945) was made in interesting conditions: without having a chance to travel to another country, Igor Moiseyev reproduced live instances of move innovativeness, counseling with artists, folklorists, students of history, musicologists. On visit in 1946 in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, the gathering of people was stunned by the exactness of the preparations, the genuine aesthetic importance of the stage works of the outfit. Since that time and as of recently the group is a school and an inventive lab for choreographers of various nations, and its collection fills in as a sort of choreographic reference book of the move culture of the people groups of the world. With the immediate support of surely understood specialists in the old stories of choreographers Miklosha Rabai (Hungary), Lubusz Guinková (Czechoslovakia), A Sung Hee (Korea), whom Moiseyev pulled in to work, the “Harmony and Friendship” (1953) program was made. Asian move old stories of eleven nations. Choreographic groups in every one of the republics of the USSR (presently the CIS nations), just as in numerous European nations, were made after the model of the people move outfit of Igor Moiseyev. The group of society move is the principal Soviet aggregate, which was discharged amid the “Iron Curtain” on visit. In 1955 the craftsmen of the gathering performed without precedent for Paris and London. The triumph of the Soviet move troupe filled in as the initial move towards worldwide tranquility. In 1958 Igor Moiseyev’s gathering likewise was the first of the local groups to perform in the USA. Fruitful visits, the American press perceived, dissolved the ice of doubt towards the USSR and turned into the reason for setting up new, valuable relations between our nations. Another critical value of the Folk Dance Ensemble is the formation of the one of a kind, one of a kind on the planet Moiseev School of Dance . Its particular highlights are high demonstrable skill, virtuosic specialized gear, capacity to exchange the improvisational idea of individuals’ execution. The Moiseyev Dance Company

About this artist.

The 69-year-old MOISEYEV DANCE COMPANY is consistently acclaimed throughout the world as the greatest of all folk dance groups. The ensemble, honored as Russia's official "State Academic Ensemble of Popular Dance," has captivated international audiences for decades with its peerless technical brilliance and exuberant evocations of traditional dances. At the heart of the group's success is the genius of its visionary artistic director, choreographer, and founder, Igor Moiseyev.

The Company's origin can be traced back to 1936, when Moiseyev, then Ballet Master and a former principal dancer and choreographer of the Bolshoi Ballet, was asked by the Soviet government to organize the first Festival of National Dance. As a student, Moiseyev had traversed the country on foot during his free time, immersing himself in the study of Russian folklore, and in the treasury of songs, dances, customs, traditions, and festivals belonging to the 180 national cultures that then comprised the Soviet Union. Fascinated by what he found, he embraced this unprecedented task of bringing traditional dances to national attention.

On February 10, 1937, Moiseyev gathered together a core of approximately forty dancers in a studio on Moscow's Leontievsky Street. His strong background in classical ballet would provide the basic training for his company, and his keen powers of observation and thorough knowledge of folklore would lead him to establish a unique style for his company that would be at once dramatic, entertaining in a theatrical sense, and larger-than-life.

Six months after that first gathering, the Moiseyev Dance Company gave its first performance at the city's Green Theater. Within a few years of this initial triumph, Moiseyev had molded the first professional ensemble of popular dance into a superb company of 100 dancers. They toured throughout the Soviet Union, constantly adding dances from other, more remote regions.

When the Cold War first eased in 1955, the Moiseyev Dance Company began to tour the world. It has since appeared in and returned to more than 60 countries, covering all continents. America's love affair with the Moiseyev Dance Company began in 1958 when the impresario Sol Hurok brought it to New York's old Metropolitan Opera House on 39th Street.

The Moiseyev Dance Company returns to North America for an unprecedented second visit this year to appear with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. These performances mark the first time that the company has performed in the United States with a symphony orchestra.

Igor Alexandrovich Moiseyev (January 21 [O.S. January 8] 1906 – November 2, 2007) has been widely acclaimed as the greatest 20th-century choreographer of character dance, a dance style similar to folk dance but with more professionalism and theatrics.

Born in Kiev, the only child of a Russian lawyer and a French-Romanian seamstress. His family lived in Paris until he was 8, and throughout his life he spoke to Western journalists in fluent French. Moiseyev graduated from the Bolshoi Theatre ballet school in 1924 and danced in the theatre until 1939. His first choreography in the Bolshoi was Footballer in 1930 and the last was Spartacus in 1954.

Since the early 1930s, he staged acrobatic parades on Red Square and finally came up with the idea of establishing the Theatre of Folk Art. In 1936, Vyacheslav Molotov put him in charge of the new dance company, which has since been known as the Moiseyev Ballet. Among about 200 dances he created for his company, some humorously represented the game of football and guerrilla warfare. After visiting Belarus he choreographed a Belarusian "folk" dance Bulba ("Potato"), which over the years indeed became a Belarusian folk dance. According to the Encyclopжdia Britannica, Moiseyev's work has been especially admired "for the balance that it maintained between authentic folk dance and theatrical effectiveness".

Moiseyev was named People's Artist of the USSR in 1953, Hero of Socialist Labor in 1976, received the Lenin Prize (1967, for the dance show A Road to the Dance), four Stalin/USSR State Prizes (1942, 1947, 1952, 1985), Russian Federation State Prize (1996), was awarded numerous orders and medals of the Soviet Union, Spain and many other countries. On the day of his centenary, Moiseyev became the first Russian to receive Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 1st class — the highest civilian decoration of the Russian Federation. In 2001, he was awarded the UNESCO Mozart Medal for outstanding contribution to world music culture. He died in Moscow in 2007.

  • Description

During the Cold War, dancers and musicians from the United States and the USSR were drawn into the battle for hearts and minds, crossing the Iron Curtain to prove their artistic and ideological prowess. After the passage of the Lacy-Zarubin Agreement, direct cultural exchange between the two superpowers opened up, and the Moiseyev Dance Company arrived in the United States in 1958. The first Soviet cultural representatives to tour America, this folk-dance troupe’s repertoire included dances from territories controlled or influenced by the USSR, including Uzbekistan, Crimea, and Poland.

Drawing on contemporary personal and published accounts, Victoria Hallinan explores why the dancers garnered overwhelming acclaim during their multicity tour and Ed Sullivan Show appearance. The “boy-meets-girl” love stories of the dances, and their idealized view of multiple Soviet cultures living together in harmony, presented a comforting image of post–World War II gender norms and race relations for audiences. Americans saw the dancers—their supposed enemies—as humans rather than agents of communist contagion.

VICTORIA HALLINAN is program manager of the Office for Postdoctoral Affairs and lecturer in the humanities at Yale University.

“A valuable addition to the existing literature on Soviet dance and US-Soviet relations during the Cold War.”— Tara Wheelwright , H-Net “In this important book, Hallinan uses audience reception to analyze how Americans looked at the troupe, and she has done enormous archival research to track down letters from audience members to the Moiseyev company, dance reviews in major US magazines and newspapers, and contemporary accounts of the company.”— Anthony Shay , author of The Igor Moiseyev Dance Company: Dancing Diplomats “ The Moiseyev Dance Company Tours America is a significant contribution to the fields of dance, cultural diplomacy, and Cold War studies. It will appeal to scholars and readers in American studies, international relations, and other studies of the performing arts.”— Anne Searcy , author of Ballet in the Cold War: A Soviet-American Exchange
