Here I try to cover all the Cruise job interview questions and answers which is possible to ask by interviewers, If I miss anything please let me know. I will not go with the technical questions department wise but yes I will try to mention the most common.

Q.1. Tell me about yourself.

Answer. You just need to brief yourself in short, crisp, and clear. The Interviewers want to know how you can describe yourself.

  • Start with your name,
  • Give your place information,
  • Education details but in short,
  • Job experience if any,
  • Family detail in short.

Now you can make your answers accordingly, I believe these points will be very easy for you to make your introduction. If the interviewer wants to listen more then you can tell about your weakness, strength, your hobby, etc.

Q. 2. Why do you want to work with Cruise Line?

Answer. Before your interview you need to google the company, you just need to know about what the company is when to build it, where is the head office, who is the founder and CEO, etc. After that, while giving the answer to this question you need to focus on:

  • You need to explain what you like about Cruise Line,
  • Relate it to your long term career goal on a Cruise ship,

Answer: All the companies want to know about your strengths and how your strengths will be beneficial for that company. So while giving such kind of answers you need to mention many points which is very common in everyone like:

  • Honest : you can say you are very honest with your company and with your work.
  • Self Motivated: Here you can say I am self-motivated.
  • Hard Working: you can say that I will work with dedication and determination.
  • Flexibility: It means you are very flexible to work with any location, any situation, and any environment.
  • Optimistic: It means you have a positive attitude.
  • Persistence: It means you are regular in your work.

Answer: This also a very important question in which interviewers want to know your weakness because your weakness can affect the company profile or your job profile. They may not hire you so while giving such kind of answer you can include some positive points, even it is a weakness but it should be positive.

Q.6. Why are you looking for a job change?

Answer. The Interviewer wants to know that why are you living your current organization and what is the reason behind your job change. So well see some point here while giving such kind of answers.

  • Always thanks to your previous organization.
  • Explain what you learn from your previous job experience.
  • Relate it to your career goals.
  • Share your reason for job change.

Like: “It is one of the fastest-growing comping. The work environment of the company is also very good. People feel very proud to be part of the company, As a company provides full support of their employees in the professional front”.

Q.8. What is your expectation with our company?

Answer: This is the most important point for you because if the interviewer will thing this candidate is good for the company then they will put you this question. So while giving such kind of answer you need to remember a few things:

  • Never share your salary expectation if you are a fresher because it might be you do not your market value.
  • Experience candidate can share their expectations, If you have some experience then you are free to share what you expect from this company.
  • Always says as per the company norms. Either you are a fresher or Experienced because every company has its own salary structure.

Like: “ If you are a fresher- I am a fresher and salary is not my first priority. This is really a big platform to start my career and I also want to improve my knowledge and gain experience. so my expectation is as per company norms which help me to maintain my economic needs “.

If you have experience: “ I have 5 years of experience in ______ and my current CRC is 5LPA, Salary has never a big issue for me still I am expecting as per company norms as per my designation, my qualification, and my experience. Which can help me to maintain my personal and financial needs “.

Q.9. What is three bucket system?

Answer. Many interviewers can ask you this question because on board this is the system that is followed by every department to maintain the hygiene level.

  • Washing, Rinsing, and Sanitizing
  • They add 100 PPM chlorine in water during sanitizing. PPM(Part Per Million).

If there is any medical issue onboard like nose running, Diarrhea, etc then they use 200 PPM for sensitization otherwise always 100 PPM.

Q.10. What are Red, Yellow , and Blue Bins?

Answer. This is the system of garbage segregation process in which they use different bins for different garbage Like:

  • Yellow Bin is use for paper and wooden waste.
  • Red bin use for Cans, bottle, etc.
  • Grey bin use for food waste.
  • Blue bin use for plastic waste.

Q.11. How often/long do you wash your hand when you are on duty?

Answer. If you are on duty then you need to wash your hand “at least 20-30 second every time “.

Q.12. Will you be able to work 7 days a week with no time off for at least 6-8 months?

Answer. You have to say yes only, For Example: where I am working currently there is nothing like that, and every month we get off a minimum of 4-5. But if I get a chance to work on a Cruise ship then I can work with no time off for at least 6-8 months.

Q.13. Are you willing to share your cabin/room with your co-workers?

Answer. Yes I can share the cabin with co-workers.

Q.14. What Is USPH?

Answer. USPH( United State Public Health), It is a primary division of department of health, education and welfare.

Well done! It’s now time to research tips for your cruise ship interview so you can be fully prepared.

The type of interview that you may have will depend on how you applied. You either applied directly to the Cruise Line or you decided to do the Recruitment Agency route.

There are many processes to the interview sequence. Some people find they have an initial brief phone call and then a more in-depth interview over Skype , while others find they have their interview straight over Skype or similar. Some people may even have an in person interview depending on their location.

For me I had 3 Skype interviews. The first one was with the recruitment agency and the last two interviews was with the Cruise Line itself. Each interview lasted around 30 minutes.

Below are my cruise ship interview tips for getting through the interview process as smoothly as possible. I am setting it out based on my experience of the process.

Interview With An Agency

The first interview I had was with the agency. This was just an overview of the job and of my capabilities to be able to work away from home. The likelihood is that you will have an interview with an agency first. When being interviewed by an agency you want to:

Ask as many questions as you want such as:

  • What are the duties of the position
  • Which job would suit your skills
  • What type of training will be provided
  • Any possibility for promotion
  • What type of uniform

You could even ask if they know what the following interview/s will be about, because this first interview is more of a warm up for the following ones, you may only have one more, but you might also have another two if you’re like me.

Second and Last Interview

After my agency interview I went on to have 2 more interviews. For both I really needed to know my stuff so the information below will help you fully prepare for these 2 interviews.

Preparation Is Key

As with any interview you take in life you need to be prepared. Learn a little about the company, to find this information just take a browse on their website.

Your CV/Resume

This should be an obvious one – make sure you know what is on your resume and can easily answer any questions about your previous jobs, work experience, skills and educational history.

You will need to know about the job you applied for. Your agency should of sent you all the information you need to know about the role, but it’s also a good idea to have a google search as well.

Take the time to learn about their work ethic and work code. There are different types of work code different Cruise Liners go by. Make sure you know the one your company goes by. Learn the demographics of the people who the Cruise Line caters for. You should know the passengers that you will be serving.

Anything Else

Learn anything else you can about the Cruise Line like new ships that are being built or when new ships will be scheduled to sale. Basically know your company inside out before you even speak to them! Read up on the latest cruise news as well.

Rules & Regulations

Make sure you understand some of the basic rules and regulations that will be expected of you.

You won’t be expected to know all the ins and outs but you should know the basic rules beforehand like the fact there are no full days off, you can’t socialize with passengers outside public areas and there is an alcohol limit too. The Cruise ship will have a zero dugs/violence policy and you will be immediately fired if you break the rules.

Ensuring you have a good grasp of the rules beforehand will set you up well. Knowledge is power and it will help you be confident in your answers to any questions thrown at you.

The cruise ship will have its own lingo so try to know some of these beforehand otherwise you make be asking the interviewer for an explanation when they are trying to explain things to you. This will not look good.

Some vocabulary to learn beforehand could be:

  • Bow: Front of ship
  • Stern: Back of ship
  • Port Side: Left side of the ship
  • Starboard Side: Right hand side of the ship

Hygiene is a HUGE deal. It plays such a huge part when it comes to working onboard. Try to familiarize yourself with their hygiene practices and what guidelines need to be followed.

Think About What You Want To Convey

It is a good idea to go over what you would like to say and convey to whoever is interviewing you.

You want to come across as hardworking, dedicated and resilient. You want to show that you are a team player and socialable. You want to show that you can cope in difficult situations and you are prepared.

Things You Will Likely Be Asked About

The preparation info above should set you up nicely to answer any questions they may have for you. You can expect them to ask you about a lot of the things. Take some time to think about how you can spin it to make you look like the best candidate for the job.

  • Past Work Experience – Try to use your past work to convey your ability to provide a friendly and efficient customer experience. It’s a good idea to go over what you have done in the past and how the skills you gained from each type of employment are useful for the cruise ship.
  • Challenges & Difficult Situations – Customer service can be quite challenging. The likelihood is you will be asked questions about what challenges you have encountered in your job roles and how you have overcome them and resolved them. I am sure if you took the time, you could come up with several different scenarios of how you dealt with a customer professionally, empathically and resolved the situation to the customer’s satisfaction. You could probably come up with other relatable experiences in other professions that aren’t so customer service specific by looking at your relationships with other colleagues.
  • Personal life – You will be asked about your personal life and any commitments you have. Some people sign a contract only to drop out earlier than expected due to commitments or frankly because they can’t hack cruise ship life. Make sure you come across as dedicated to the job and that your partner/family understand the situation and will not prevent you from completing a contract.

You must show you have the ability to be away from home for an extended period of time so if you have done some travelling alone already this experience would be hugely beneficial to put across.

  • Being on a Ship – You will definitely be asked about your understanding and thoughtfulness around the unique challenges that a cruise ship job involves. This is when all that research you did can really come in handy, as you explain how you have spoken to others and listened to the unique situations they have encountered and how this has prepared you for what the job entails.

What Not To Say

Sometimes we can forget ourselves or get overly nervous and say the dumbest things. Here are a few things you want to avoid aluding to in yuour interview:

  • Don’t say you only want to do one contract (even if it is true!)
  • Don’t mention how you hate long hours, as that is what you will be doing
  • Don’t say anything negative about any aspect of the work you will be doing.
  • Don’t bad mouth past colleagues, this does not look good at all particularly as you will be joining a TEAM.

Lastly…

Wear a shirt, smile a lot, relax and be confident. You have got this. It isn’t that bad!

It’s exciting once you’re told that you’ve been invited for a cruise ship job interview, but it can also be stressful. Will you be prepared for the interview? What should you wear? You know the recruiter is interested in you once they invite you for an interview. Whatever type of interview you have, how much you have prepared can be the crucial factor in getting hired or not. Preparing for an interview will not only make you feel confident, it will also demonstrate to the interviewer that you’ve done your homework. And, prepared applicants equates to prepared crewmembers.

The best way to show that you are prepared is by answering the recruiter’s questions with knowledgeable and well-thought out answers. To be prepared, you should practice answering questions that may be asked of you including being able to give vivid examples. Practice your answers out loud in front of a mirror until know what you want to say and sound confident.

You must be able to demonstrate that life at sea will suit you. You will need to show that you can be a real team player and get on with your colleagues – as you will be living, working and socialising together for long periods of time.

Many of the questions you are likely to be asked during the interview will be trying to reveal whether you have the energy, reliability and personality to work on board as a team player.

Prior to your interview then, as part of your planning, take some time to come up with some specific examples of when you have successfully dealt with challenges such as:

  • Living in shared accommodation
  • Working long hours for weeks at a time
  • Being away from friends or family for a long period
  • Working or interacting with people from different cultures or nationalities

  • How do you feel about being away for months at a time?
  • Are you willing to share a cabin with a co-worker?
  • Will you be able to work seven days a week with no time off for four to seven months?

The way you dress and present yourself at interview (whether this is in person or over Skype) makes a huge impression on the recruiters who will be interviewing you. Cruise Lines are looking for presentable people who will be able to give a positive impression which reflects the company ethos to their guests on board.

Most cruise companies have strict dress codes and regulations that apply to clothing, hair, make up, tattoos and piercings. For an interview you should plan to dress conservatively and smartly.

The most important aspect of your appearance is your demeanour . Guests and recruiters alike will want to see happy, smiling employees who are radiating positive energy – so be sure to make lots of eye contact and smile. You will look and feel more confident and make a fantastic first impression!

Make sure you plan ahead and print out any required documents or certificates for the interview. If they decide to hire you on the day, they will require certain documents - and you’ll appear more organised if you already have them ready with you.

For example, if the recruiter has your documents but needs to wait for other candidates to send theirs after the interview, your application could go straight to the front of the line for the job.

Print two copies of your CV and cover letter to bring with you. Also, make sure to bring a pen with you to complete any required paperwork.

It’s possible that you’ll be asked to start your new job on short notice. Bring your passport along with you – you need a valid passport with at least one year left before it expires.

Depending on the job you are being interviewed for, you should also bring a headshot photo of yourself, DVD or portfolio, and two or three letters of reference.

Personalities on teams are different. This line of interview questioning sheds light on how they interact with others and will help you determine if the interviewee has the potential to be a happy productive member of your business. 

9. How do you define hard work in the workplace?

Organizations move at different speeds from one another.

If an interviewee is comfortable working in a laidback environment where hard deadlines are rare then they may not be a good fit for a position in which they have to constantly produce work in a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.

10. Do you like working with a team or working alone?

This really depends on what opening the job seekers are applying for. Is it a desk job that only requires them to be by themselves self or is it work that demands coordination and communication with others? 

If you analyze that the applicants are people who are flexible, willing to do multi-tasking, and wouldn’t be bothered if at times they work alone or with a team, these could be the best professionals to hire. 

This question has more importance at this time due to the current remote working environment.

11. What are some weak points you can work on?

All job applicants have weaknesses in their character or qualifications, and immediately admitting them during the interview can actually be a sign of strength. 

12. What are your greatest strengths to a company?

The ability of a candidate to talk about their strengths and still maintain their humility is a strong indicator of a winning personality. 

This also gives the interviewee a chance to explain and align their strengths with the position they are interviewing for demonstrating attributes that will contribute to the company’s goals.

13. Talk about a critical work situation you solved

It is often in the pressure-filled and stressful situations where professionals and real leaders emerge victoriously and experience their greatest growth gains.

14. When conflict arises at work how do you handle it?

By asking questions related to conflict you will get a better understanding of the interviewee’s interpersonal skills and personality.

The interviewee’s response may also give you a sense of their ability to resolve and deal with conflict at work.

15. Why do you plan on leaving your current employer?

Listen closely to how the candidates show their respect for their current boss and company.

Having this type of scrutiny will give you a better idea of how these candidates will treat their supervisors and colleagues if they are hired into your organization. 

16. Reveal something about yourself not on your resume

Sometimes there are quirks about prospective employees that you simply can’t see on a resume.

They may be a good fit on paper, but when you interview them, you may get a sense from their answers that hint at possible trouble for the organization down the road.

17. How do you deal with tight deadlines?

For interviewees, their most ideal answer should be a version of this: “I review a list of tasks and analyze what are the most urgent and critical matters. I put the most urgent ones on top of the list.

Next, I focus on each task with complete concentration until I finish it before moving on to the next urgent task. 

18. Describe your ideal workspace

Since this is an open-ended question and not answerable with yes or no, let the applicants take their time to describe to you how their ideal work environment would be and see if it matches your current office environment.

19. How would your current boss describe you?

This question will hopefully give you a better idea of how the interviewee interacts with their current and past managers.

20. Outline the process on how you set goals

Your best employees are generally driven and goal-oriented. This question will help ensure they have the ability to not only reach goals you would set for them but set their own goals to achieve as well.

The top candidates will be able to explain their goal-setting process in detail, how they set up their goals, break goals into smaller tasks, and measure their success once completing them.

21. Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?

An ambitious professional with a clear set of goals for the short, medium, and long term, is an invaluable asset to the company. This is true especially if they parallel their career growth with the company they are interviewing at. 

As they grow professionally and financially, the company grows and expands too.

During the interview, confident job seekers will discuss that they seek a company with upward mobility as they help the company prosper.

22. What do you want to do differently at a new job?

The type of answer here will let you know their line of thinking.

Do they launch into a negative conversation about their current or former boss ? Or do they look towards the future excited about the potential in your company?

23. Have you applied for any other positions?

If the interviewee has been applying for other positions, is a good idea to see what types of positions they have applied for. Are the positions similar to your opening or totally different?

If you speak to a candidate who is applying for many different types of positions in many different fields it may give you an indication that the candidate does not really know what kind of job they want and are just seeing what’s out there.

24. Have you had any other interviews recently?

A great question if the interview has been going great and you want to know the type of competition your up against.

By probing for where the candidate has interviewed recently. You can establish better timeline on if you should act quickly and extend a job offer.

25. Do you have any questions for me?

If you pose this question to interviewees, the more interesting and more passionate ones will most likely have a wide variety of questions they wish to ask. 

The ones who are more thoughtful and are interested in the job will be the most likely ones to ask intelligent, informative questions which will enrich the interview process.

As ‘Chinatown’ Turns 50, Robert Towne Reflects on His Netflix Prequel Plans With David Fincher and Writing Jack Nicholson’s Most Iconic Role

There are the classics — and then there’s “ Chinatown .” First released on June 20, 1974, the seminal noir feature was a resounding success at its time: a big hit for producer and Paramount heavy Robert Evans, a renowned return to Hollywood for director Roman Polanski and an Academy Award winner for screenwriter Robert Towne , plus Oscar nominations for stars Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway.

In the years since, Towne has consistently affirmed that he now believes Polanski’s reimagined ending is the appropriate one. Now in his 80s, the screenwriter has even returned to “Chinatown” himself, working with Fincher to script a prequel series that explores Gittes’ days as a newly minted detective patrolling the neighborhood that would come to haunt him.

“All I’m likely to say is yes, all the episodes have been written for Netflix,” Towne writes in an interview with Variety . “Working with a force of nature like David Fincher, tho’ occasionally humbling, is never less than enlightening.”

“When David and I first started talking we agreed we wouldn’t try to replicate Noah Cross,” Towne says about the villain of the series. “But we did want to keep in mind that the crimes that history considers monstrous are those that will not remain in the past but insist on visiting the future, and I think we managed that.”

In particular, Towne and Fincher’s scripts explore the relationship between a young Gittes and fellow officer Lou Escobar. Played by Perry Lopez in the 1974 film, Escobar is more obstacle than ally to Gittes in that story. But their shared history as police partners patrolling Chinatown, as well as Escobar’s presence during the tragedy that shakes Gittes, are both alluded to throughout the film.

“Chinatown, with all its implications for an evolving Los Angeles, is central to understanding the evolving Jake Gittes, as is his friendship with and dependence on his partner Lou Escobar,” Towne says. “It was enlightening to delve into their backstory, Escobar’s in particular. Small details that are touched on in the film are given life and breadth in a way that surprised even me.”

The as-yet-unrealized Netflix series wouldn’t be Towne’s first continuation of “Chinatown” though. A sequel, “The Two Jakes,” was penned by the screenwriter and directed by Nicholson himself. In the years ahead of production, Nicholson referred to “The Two Jakes” as part of a “triptych” of features, alluding to a potential third entry in a so-called “Chinatown” trilogy, which would have continued tracking the development and corruption of 20th century Los Angeles.

“‘Chinatown’ for me began when I was living in Benedict Canyon and some developer bought up acreage in nearby Deep Canyon and started a rapacious building concern. Land was being destroyed because of greed,” Towne says.

“The Two Jakes” was released in 1990: the same year as another belated (but more awards-friendly) bite at the New Hollywood apple, Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather Part III.” The sequel finds Gittes resettled in 1948 L.A. after serving in WWII. Now the owner of his own office building and a member of a country club, the private eye has grown complacent and, as the New York Times put it in its review , “older (and wider).” But when a new real estate conspiracy centered on oil deposits arises, Gittes becomes possessed by his latent morality once again, uncovering surprising ties back to the Cross case that haunts him.

Towne and Nicholson have both been quoted as saying a third Gittes story would’ve been set after California enacted no-fault divorce, meaning a marriage could be legally terminated without requiring one party to prove wrongdoing by the other. Naturally, such a law could’ve put an end to Gittes’ line of detective work; investigating and photographing infidelities is his bread-and-butter.

While Towne has refuted the notion that “Chinatown” was originally conceived as the start of a trilogy, he does affirm that a third Gittes film was considered a possibility. However, when asked about “Gittes vs. Gittes,” the screenwriter shares that he stopped considering story ideas after finishing the screenplay for “The Two Jakes” and then exiting the sequel before filming commenced.

“The questions tho’ intriguing have no answer, at least none that I can give. My involvement in ‘The Two Jakes’ ended before Jack directed the film. And with it any speculation as to where Jake Gittes might be, and what he might be doing at a future date,” Towne says. “A character doesn’t just appear fully formed like Athena from the head of Zeus. How he or she evolves or devolves is — let’s face it — the principal craft of the screenwriter. Jake Gittes was in his late thirties in ‘Chinatown.’ And whatever I may have speculated in my own late 30s is most likely not what I’d venture to create now.”

“Which is why I’m fond of the prequel that places Gittes newly in Los Angeles. … It is to this young Jake Gittes that I am particularly drawn,” Towne continues. “Because for all his bravado — his not playing by the rules, his penchant to be in charge — he controls events far less than events control him. And by the time he figures it out, it’s much too late to do anything about it, which seems to me the plight of the very young and the very old.”

Towne has also spoken over the years about how Nicholson’s persona was a formative influence in his writing of Gittes. The pair’s history dates back to a performance class in the late 1950s, taught by then-blacklisted actor Jeff Corey. The two became friends and lived together as roommates before Towne wrote the screenplay for Hal Ashby’s “The Last Detail” and with it, one of Nicholson’s most memorable roles. The character of Gittes was similarly calibrated for the actor.

“From the moment I laid eyes on him, I knew Jack was gonna be a star. … I wouldn’t have been able to envision anyone else in the part,” Towne says. “It wasn’t just his capacity for indignation, an innate sense that the world may not be fair but that it damn well  should  be. It was also his passion for clothing, a certain eye for the finer things, a disregard for — even aversion to — the ordinary.”

“Having a real person to write for simply makes my task easier and more enjoyable,” Towne says. “I’d known Goldie Hawn since ‘Shampoo’ and through her later got to know Kurt Russell, the best-hearted bad boy you’re likely to meet. Nick Frescia was meant to be Kurt. Or, look at Tom Cruise. He’s a terrific actor who’s played multiple roles, but just like seeing [James] Cagney walking or Jimmy Stewart walking, you know it’s Tom from the first shot, that ferocious energy, and so if you’re writing for him, you’re halfway there in terms of character.”

A lifelong screenwriter, Towne has seen the film industry transform from the New Hollywood to streaming. Writing for Lapham’s Quarterly in the mid-’90s, he posed an existential question about his profession that only seems more pertinent in the splintered attention spans of the digital age: “It’s tough to write effectively without common ground between you and your audience. Shared beliefs, like shared experience and shared myths, provide that ground. … For me, this is the problem the contemporary screenwriter faces: How can he tell a compelling story when there’s nothing the audience believes to be self-evident?”

“I’m not certain of my state of mind when I said that, but what I will say now is that storytelling doesn’t stop simply because a culture uses different mechanisms,” Towne says when asked about the article. “Audiences still want to believe. They’re simply more sophisticated, they’ve grown used to the medium of film so they’re not so easily beguiled.”

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is "deeply grateful" for Joe Biden's decision to prioritise air defence deliveries for Ukraine. 

The Ukrainian president said his country was in critical need of the capabilities to protect its cities and civilians from Russian attacks. 

"The partnership between Ukraine and the United States is strong and unwavering. Together, we are protecting life against terror and aggression," he added. 

It comes after the US said a recent defence pact signed by Russia and North Korea was a "cause for concern". 

The recently signed defence pact between Russia and North Korea is a cause of concern but is no surprise, the White House has said.

Speaking to reporters, White House spokesman John Kirby said the agreement between the two countries was a sign of Russia's desperation for foreign assistance in the Ukraine war.

The deal has seen both countries vow to help each other if they faced armed aggression, and replaces previous treaties between the countries. 

Russia said the pact was needed because of "the deep evolution of the geopolitical situation in the world and the region".

Mr Kirby also said the US would reprioritise planned deliveries of foreign military equipment to go to Ukraine, which is in "desperate need" of more air defence capabilities.

Vladimir Putin has warned that South Korea would be making a "big mistake" if it decides to supply weapons to Ukraine. 

The Russian president's comments come after South Korea said a new defence agreement between North Korea and Moscow was "absurd" and it would reconsider sending arms to Kyiv as a result. 

Mr Putin said Seoul had nothing to worry about when it came to the mutual defence pact. 

Russian state media quoted him as saying that Moscow expected its cooperation with North Korea to serve as a deterrent to the West. 

He also refused to rule out supplying high-precision weapons to the country. 

Russia is considering making changes to its nuclear weapons doctrine, Vladimir Putin has said. 

The Russian president made the comments while speaking to reporters at the end of his Vietnam trip. 

The existing doctrine states that Russia may use such weapons in response to a nuclear strike or in the event of a conventional attack that poses an existential threat to the country. 

Ukrainian troops have been launching mid-range reconnaissance drones in Kharkiv.

Russian forces crossed into parts of the northeastern region last month, and officials claim they have seized at least a dozen villages.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv's forces are gradually pushing Russian troops out of the contested area.

A police search is under way for a woman who allegedly desecrated the graves of Ukrainian soldiers.

Kyiv city's prosecutor's office said the unknown woman vandalised the graves this morning. 

Commemorative plaques and lamps were torn off and broken, it said.

The Ukrainian flag was also "mutilated", it added.

"Operational investigations and searches are being carried out to establish the woman's identity," the office said in post on Telegram. 

If caught and found guilty, the woman could face up to five years in prison.

  • The two leaders signed agreements to further co-operation on education, science and technology, oil and gas exploration and health;
  • They also agreed to work on a road map for a nuclear science and technology centre in Vietnam;
  • Following the talks, Mr Putin said that the two countries share an interest in "developing a reliable security architecture" in the Asia-Pacific region based on not using force and peacefully settling disputes with no room for "closed military-political blocs";
  • The Russian leader also met Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and is scheduled to meet Communist Party general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong - Vietnam's most powerful politician;
  • The trip has resulted in a sharp rebuke from the US embassy in the country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Romania's decision to provide his country with two Patriot air defence systems will strengthen security in Ukraine and throughout Europe.

"This crucial contribution will bolster our air shield and help us better protect our people and critical infrastructure from Russian air terror," the Ukrainian president said on X.

The Patriot, which stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target, is a surface-to-air missile defence system.

For months now, Ukraine has been calling for countries to provide more air defence systems to help protect it from Russian attacks.
