Upon landing in a foreign country, expect a lot of lines. There’s immigration, passport control and customs inspection. But there’s one line you can — and absolutely should — skip: the airport currency exchange.

Not only does the airport currency exchange counter’s line cut into precious time abroad, but it’s typically a terrible money move. Airport currency exchange rates are among the worst you’ll find.

It’s not uncommon to see airport exchanges charging 14% more than the current International Monetary Fund (IMF) exchange rate. NerdWallet even found some premiums exceeding 17%. Some also charge additional fees on top of the poor exchange rate.

So what do you do if you need cash upon arrival to order a cab or tip the bellhop? Consider ordering foreign currency before you fly.

Most banks allow you to order foreign currencies, which you can typically pick up at a local branch before your trip. Some banks offer to ship currencies to you, and sometimes they don’t even charge extra for postage if you order a certain amount.

Plus, the exchange rate are usually quite good. For instance, at Bank of America, the exchange rates we checked in January 2024 average roughly 6% more than the IMF rates — and less than half of what the airport currency exchanges are charging.

Just check your own bank's exchange rate to ensure it's optimal before initiating the transaction.

How to order foreign currency from your bank

While the exact process varies by bank, most major banks make it easy to order online.

Typically you can access the currency exchange webpage through your bank’s website or mobile app, or by phone. From there, you usually enter the currency you need, add the desired amount, select the pickup method and place your order.

While you can generally expect a solid exchange rate, use a trusted source such as Reuters or the International Monetary Fund to find current exchange rates and ensure you get a fair deal.

Additionally, understand all the fees involved. For example, Citi charges a $5 service fee for transactions under $1,000, though it’s waived for clients with premium bank accounts .

Or you might get charged a shipping fee. Bank of America’s standard shipping costs $7.50, but overnight shipping is $20. Sometimes you can avoid shipping fees by opting to pick up the cash at a local branch or by being a loyal customer. Bank of America Preferred Rewards program members get free standard shipping.

There’s also generally a minimum amount of foreign currency you can order ($100 or $200 is common) and a maximum ($10,000 within a 30-day period is common).

Other good ways to pay abroad

If it’s too late to order foreign currency from your bank, here are other ways to curtail currency fees :

Find an in-network ATM abroad

Major banks usually have branches abroad or partner with other banks to create a network. Using those ATMs often provides a decent exchange rate while eliminating out-of-network ATM fees.

If you end up using a non-network ATM, pay attention to ATM fees , which vary but usually run about $5 per transaction. Given that, consider limiting ATM debit transactions by withdrawing the amount you think you’ll need for the entire trip, or at least a large portion of it.

ATM availability is more common in some places than others. Macau has the highest number of ATMs per capita with 316 ATMs per 100,000 adults, based on 2021 data from the World Bank Group. Uruguay, Canada and Austria are other destinations with the most ATMs per capita.

But other countries tend to have far fewer. For example, Kenya had fewer than 7 ATMs per 100,000 adults and Nepal had only 20 ATMs per 100,000 adults, according to the same data.

Pay with a credit card that doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees

Depending on the card, you might get dinged with foreign transaction fees of 1%-3% when you make purchases at non-U.S. retailers abroad.

That’s why it’s wise to carry a no-foreign-transaction-fee credit card abroad.

And more international merchants are taking plastic. This wider card acceptance and increased security are reasons travelers are ditching cash, according to the Visa Global Travel Intentions Study 2023, which polled more than 15,000 people in the Asian Pacific region between April and June 2023.

While this type of card won’t help you pay at cash-only businesses or get money for tips, it’s otherwise one of the smartest ways to pay internationally.

» Frequent travelers: Consider a multicurrency account

Try paying in cash dollars

If all else fails, offer to pay in U.S. dollars. In fact, some merchants or individuals accepting tips prefer it in certain countries. You might find vendors willing to give you an even better deal if you pay with U.S. dollars.

Post office travel application

Now, the post office application has been very useful, as one can top up money whilst travelling as well as check ones balance on the travel money card. In conclusion, lastly, I found the travel money card particularly useful on 16th November 2019, evening time as one can search for useful tips and questions that one maybe concerned about before travelling, during and after travel, and for me, I found this application extremely useful, as there was information I needed to know before my travel, such as the currency of the country I am travelling to, and where to obtain the currency of the country I am travelling to shortly. Moreover, I thank the developers for making this useful, and appropriate travel application as I believe it is a safe as well as secure method of travelling with money, to the country of ones choice instead of carrying loads of cash around in different currencies, and risking theft issues or lost issues. Also, I found the help and advice section on the website useful, as I had forgotten my PIN number as I never used my travel money card for a while, and I was able to call up a number from the travel money website, and follow the on phone instructions to retrieve my PIN number once again. Next, thank you developers for making this travel application once again. Many thanks Hannah Boyce

Developer Response ,

Thanks very much for the fantastic feedback, glad you like the app and the product.

Dreadful new App not working for 3 days now

Rang customer services 3 days ago now as newly downloaded App top up button gives an error that it can’t fetch the rates right now so have to go on main website to do that. Then when you use the card it doesn’t update the balance. It retrieve the pin either. The card was then unsupported in an ATM when I tried doing a balance enquiry. Different information from service staff who told me I needed to load another £50 minimum on card and buy something using chip and pin to use card for for first time. However that’s £3 commission just to load on £50 of your own money ! I don’t even need sterling on the card as the whole point is for using it abroad to TRAVEL!! So I had already bought Euros. The lady in the post office said I can’t use the card at all for online purchases however I managed to pay for my holiday eventually over the phone in euros once they had removed the security 3 times! A smarter assistant also said I don’t need to add sterling to buy something in U.K. - the euros will auto convert- which they did. Still stuck with a non working app and took 3 hours to finally get the card loaded and working to pay for holiday. Agh. Why so complicated
Thank you for your feedback. This will be shared with our development teams who are committed to improving the app experience for all.

No problems at all

I have had and used this Post Office Travel Card for the last eight years with no issues whatsoever, it expired earlier this year and a replacement arrived in good time for this year’s use. I did have a little hiccup with the first login online for the first use but very soon sorted out and hay presto of and running again, brilliant. I did have a lot of issues with another company travel card whereby EVERY TIME I tried to login on the app or online it wouldn’t recognise me and had to reset password wasted six and a half hours, still getting no results so cancel the subscription 😡. Update to review April 2024 I have been away from UK to USA and CANADA this time and have had no end of problems trying to login into the app on my phone or Laptop, issue with the app freezing on my phone or going round in circles on laptop with password/security reset issues I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled all to no avail it would not let me use face recognition ID Very disappointed after such a brilliant service the first time around until the new card and updated app 😡😡😡 I to like so many others am looking for an alternative card & app.

Can I get euros from the Post Office without ordering

post office branch

We’ve previously covered the best credit and debit cards for foreign travel and if you have more than week before your trip, we’d suggest you order one of our recommend cards.

Sometimes, though you just need currency hurry, and one of the quickest and easiest places to get it before you travel is from your local Post Office. Especially if it’s euros or dollars that you need.

In this article we’re going to look at how you can get euros from the Post Office without ordering, the ID requirements, exchange rates, and of course in true Money Saving Answers style, alternatives that will save you money.

Can I get euros from the Post Office without ordering?

Yes, but it depends on the branch and availability at the time. All branches that have a bureau de change will allow to you to buy euros without ordering in advance, but they may not be able to provide the amount you require. It’s also worth pointing out that you’ll get a worse rate if you don’t pre-order.

If you need large amounts it’s always best to preorder the amount you need. This can be done online, or in person.

Do I need ID to buy euros at post office?

Yes. Buying or exchanging euros at the Post Offices means you’ll have to present a valid Government issued ID such as your passport or driving licence. EU/EEA national ID cards are also accepted as well as Irelands Passport Card.

Can I pre-order euros from the Post Office?

Absolutely, and you’ll get the best rates this way. Not only do pre-orders lock in the exchange rate, it also ensures that the branch you visit has enough euros to meet your requirements.

Even if you’re in a hurry, you can still pre-order, as any orders before 2pm can be collected within 2 hours of ordering. While orders after the 2pm cut off will be available the next day.

See the Post Office travel website for more information and to order your currency.

TIP : If ordering online be careful. Paying with a credit card instead of a debit card, may be seen as cash advance by your credit card company, and as such attract a higher rate of interest.

Can I order euros from the Post Office for home delivery?

You can order euros or other foreign currencies from the Post Office for home delivery. There’s a minimum order of £400 equivalent, to have the currency delivered, but if your order is over that amount then you won’t pay any delivery fees.

Orders are sent Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed by 1pm, but in more rural areas might not be delivered until 17:30.

How are the exchange rates?

If you’re considering buying euros from the Post Office then the exchange rate is often secondary to the convenience of being able to pick up travel currency from your local highstreet. That being said, we all like to know we’re getting a fair deal.

The Post Office rates on euros are typically 1.5-2% off the mid-market rate. So assuming a mid-market rate of £1 to €1.1549, changing £1,000 to euros at the Post Office you could expect to get roughly €1,140. That’s up to €14 less then if you get if using a specialist travel card.

Check XE.com to ensure you’re up to date with the exchange rate, before committing to exchanging at the Post Office.

How can I save money?

Buying foreign currency from the Post Office might be convenient, but it’s certainly not the cheapest or most cost effective way to ensure financial readiness for your trip.

There are a number of ways you can save money on foreign exchange fees, but what’s available to you depends on when you take action.

A week or more before your trip?

If you have more than week before your trip, use one of our best buy travel credit cards or best buy travel debit cards and withdraw euros from an ATM abroad. This will ensure get you always get the best rate available.

The Post Office itself offers a pre-pay travel debit card, but you’d be better off with a card from Kroo , Revolut , Starling . If you don’t want to open a new account, and would prefer to spend directly from your main high street bank current account then Currensea is a great solution.

We have a full review of Currensea here , but essentially it acts a layer between your foreign spending, and your UK bank account. Spend euros or other currencies via your Currensea card and it debits your bank account in pounds (via direct debit), thus avoiding the foreign exchange and loading fees charged by the big banks.

£10 free cashback

Sign up for a free Currensea card via our link, and you'll get £10 cashback when you use your Currensea card abroad and spend £100.

Two days or more before your trip?

If you have two days of more before your trip, and  are willing to have your currency delivered you may be able to use specialist currency exchange firms online. A the time of writing, the Post Office sells euros at €1.136 to £1. The best online bureau de change offers €1.143 to £1. Exchanging £1,000 at this better rate would see you gain €7.

There are however a number of caveats with approach. Firstly many of these exchange services are not FCA authorised so there is often little protection should something go wrong. Some charge a delivery fee for currency below a certain amount, which could wipe out any gains from the better exchange rate. There can also be fees for using your debit card to buy the currency rather than doing a bank transfer.

On the day of travel

Even if you need your currency in a hurry you can still save money on the high street, by swapping your pounds for euros at Eurochange rather than the Post Office. Typically Eurochange outlets offer better rates than the Post Office, but again it pays to order in advance if you can.

FAQ – Getting Euros from the Post Office Without Ordering

What’s the fastest way to get euros from the Post Office? The quickest method is to visit a branch with a bureau de change. Remember, rates are better when you pre-order.

Are there any fees for buying euros directly at the Post Office? No additional fees are charged for currency exchange, but the rates for instant exchanges are typically higher than pre-ordered rates.

How do Post Office euro exchange rates compare to banks? The Post Office rates are competitive, often better than you’ll get at high street banks but slightly higher than some dedicated online exchange services.

Post Office travel money: Should you buy online or in-store?

You'll get a worse exchange rate in-store unless you order your travel money online first

can i get travel money at the post office

Peter Rudin

25 January 2017

For many people the Post Office will be the right choice of currency provider. If you are new to buying currency online they are a nice safe choice. If you don’t want to wait in for a special delivery then you have a good range of branches all over the country to choose from.

The downside is the rates. Not that the rates are bad but it is the question of what rate are you going to get.

The Post Office offer a different rate in store than online.

You can see the difference is 0.0068 or just over 2/3rds of a percent on a typical £1,000 order. Today that isn’t a massive amount, just €7 or €8 in your pocket. The main reason for the low ‘star rating’ you can see in the online rates image is when people check the online rate at home then walk down to their local branch and get a different rate and worse rate when they actually have to pay. No one likes to feel ripped off.

This is made worse again when you compare it to the best rates available.

You can see that the top rates are a good 3.5% higher than the Post Office. That is more than €40 more cash in your pocket that you would get over the counter in your local branch. That is not an insignificant amount of money. I personally think people should be rewarded in some way for using their local shops, not penalised. OK, fair enough Travel FX and Griffin Financial are specialists but the Post Office should not, in my opinion, be effectively charging customers for collecting their own money from the branch rather than having it delivered. That just seems unfair to me.

If you want to use the Post Office then the thing to do is go to the Post Office website, book and pay for your money online but choose in branch pickup as a delivery option. That way you get the improved online only rate but you can still walk in and pick it up yourself which means you do not have to wait in for a delivery.

Trump Has Been Convicted. Here’s What Happens Next.

Donald J. Trump has promised to appeal, but he may face limits on his ability to travel and to vote as he campaigns for the White House.

Donald J. Trump in a dark suit, red tie and white shirt.

By Jesse McKinley and Maggie Astor

  • May 30, 2024

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation.

It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that . No constitutional provision would stop him even from serving as president from a prison cell, though in practice that would trigger a crisis that courts would almost certainly have to resolve.

His ability to vote — for himself, presumably — depends on whether he is sentenced to prison. Florida, where he is registered, requires felons convicted there to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. But when Floridians are convicted in another state, Florida defers to the laws of that state, and New York disenfranchises felons only while they are in prison.

The Trump Manhattan Criminal Verdict, Count By Count

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

“Because Florida recognizes voting rights restoration in the state of conviction, and because New York’s law states that those with a felony conviction do not lose their right to vote unless they are incarcerated during the election, then Trump will not lose his right to vote in this case unless he is in prison on Election Day,” said Blair Bowie, a lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog group.

Mr. Trump will almost certainly appeal his conviction, after months of criticizing the case and attacking the Manhattan district attorney, who brought it, and Justice Merchan, who presided over his trial.

Long before that appeal is heard, however, Mr. Trump will be enmeshed in the gears of the criminal justice system.

A pre-sentencing report makes recommendations based on the defendant’s criminal record — Mr. Trump had none before this case — as well as his personal history and the crime itself. The former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had a brief sexual tryst with Mr. Trump in 2006, in order to buy her silence.

At the pre-sentence interview, a psychologist or social worker working for the probation department may also talk to Mr. Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” according to the New York State Unified Court System.

The pre-sentencing report can also include submissions from the defense, and may describe whether “the defendant is in a counseling program or has a steady job.”

In Mr. Trump’s case, of course, he is applying — as it were — for a steady job as president of the United States, a campaign that may be complicated by his new status as a felon. Mr. Trump will likely be required to regularly report to a probation officer, and rules on travel could be imposed.

Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 Class E felonies, New York’s lowest level , each of which carry a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. Probation or home confinement are other possibilities that Justice Merchan can consider.

That said, Justice Merchan has indicated in the past that he takes white-collar crime seriously . If he did impose prison time, he would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning that Mr. Trump would serve time on each of the counts he was convicted of simultaneously.

If Mr. Trump were instead sentenced to probation, he could still be jailed if he were later found to have committed additional crimes. Mr. Trump, 77, currently faces three other criminal cases: two federal, dealing with his handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election , and a state case in Georgia that concerns election interference.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers can file a notice of appeal after sentencing, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. And the judge could stay any punishment during an appeal, something that could delay punishment beyond Election Day.

The proceedings will continue even if he wins: Because it’s a state case, not federal, Mr. Trump would have no power as president to pardon himself .

Understanding currency, how to get most bang for your buck when traveling internationally

Traveling internationally can come with a lot of additional fees that quickly add up on your vacation. From foreign transaction fees to currency conversion fees, there are so many things to look out for.

When traveling abroad, knowing exactly what your dollar is worth and how to avoid unnecessary fees can keep a lot of money in your pocket. Learning the basics of currency and how it works can be a powerful tool when traveling to another country.

The following is information on common currencies, exchange rates and tips for international travel that will save you cash in the long run.

SMART SHOPPING EXPERT GIVES TIPS FOR VACATIONING WITHOUT BREAKING THE BANK

  • What are the most common currencies?
  • What is the definition of currency?
  • Which currencies are the most powerful?
  • How can I convert currency in real time?
  • How do I get the most for my money when traveling internationally?

When people talk about the most common currencies, they are often referring to those that are used the most frequently in terms of trading .

The U.S. dollar (USD) is used the most frequently in international commerce. This makes the dollar a very powerful form of currency.

Other common currencies are the euro (EUR), the Japanese yen (JPY), the British pound (GBP), the Australian dollar (AUD) and the Canadian dollar (CAD).

10 MOST POPULAR INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL DESTINATIONS

The definition of currency is "a medium of exchange for goods and services," according to Investopedia.

Currency is what is used in a particular country as its primary system of money. This comes in the form of paper bills and coins.

While the bills and coins a country uses stay primarily the same, their value, as it relates to other currencies, does fluctuate. In fact, the global currency market is constantly floating, with exchange rates between the world's most powerful currencies rising and falling with the vicissitudes of the international markets.

In terms of exchange rate, or the price of one currency related to another, the Kuwaiti dinar is the strongest with respect to the US dollar. In other words, it has the most favorable exchange rate to US currency: it takes $3.25 U.S. dollars to buy 1 Kuwaiti dinar.

HOW TO STAY CONNECTED ON YOUR PHONE WHILE TRAVELING ABROAD

In terms of overall value, the U.S. dollar is often said to be the most powerful form of currency. This holds true for many reasons.

When it comes to the U.S. dollar's value historically as it relates to the currencies of its trading partners, it has held its value well over the long term.

When traveling internationally, it is vital to keep currency in mind so that you are not overpaying when converting currency and getting hit with foreign transaction fees that add up quickly during a trip.

There are several quick and easy ways to convert currency in real time online, so that you are fully aware of how much your dollar is worth in other places.

BEST REWARDS CREDIT CARDS AND HOW POINTS CAN BE REDEEMED FOR TRAVEL, CASH BACK OR GIFT CARDS

These numbers fluctuate over time. Below is a rough estimate of currency conversions for the five most commonly used currencies.

  • 1 dollar = 0.92 euros
  • 1 dollar = 145.20 yen
  • 1 dollar = 0.79 pound sterling
  • 1 dollar = 1.56 Australian dollars
  • 1 dollar = 1.35 Canadian dollars

There are many things you can do to help you save money when you are traveling internationally.

Firstly, be aware of the exchange rates. When you are traveling to another country, know exactly what your dollar is worth. You can do this by using an online converter to see exactly what the dollar converts to when you are in another country.

When planning a trip abroad, take a good look at your credit card and the perks it offers you. You can save hundreds of dollars through travel rewards credit cards, in which points are earned based on spending that you can use toward your vacation. Using these points can help you save a lot of money on hotels and flights for your international trip.

You should also examine your credit card and/or debit card's foreign transaction fees. Try to choose cards that have a very low foreign transaction fee, or better yet, no fee at all. Cards with high foreign transaction fees are going to cost you during your vacation. Save the money on fees, so you can spend that money on enjoying yourself during your travels. When you do have to take money out of the ATM while abroad, try to find your bank's ATM network for the best rates.

Obviously, if you are short on cash and need to go to the ATM, use it. But one of the best ways to exchange currency is actually before you leave. Try to set up a rough budget for yourself, so you know how much cash you'll want to take with you. Then, contact your local bank before your trip to exchange your currency. Leave yourself some time before your trip, so the bank has time to get you your foreign currency. Then, just pick up your cash in the currency you need before you go. Banks and credit unions usually have better exchange rates, so it's wise to do this before you reach your destination.

If you decide to pay with a card for a purchase when you are abroad, choose the option to pay in local currency versus USD when you are given the choice. You are typically given a better conversion rate when you choose to pay in local currency.

How will Donald Trump's guilty verdict hit his reelection bid? Is his political fallout here?

can i get travel money at the post office

NEW YORK – Former President Donald Trump's 2024 White House campaign now enters unknown territory: Voter reaction to the first major party nominee to be convicted of crimes .

Trump must now convince Americans he deserves a second term even after a New York jury found him guilty of all 34 felony counts tied to falsifying business records as part of a plan to influence the 2016 presidential election.

While the challenge is unprecedented, Trump’s approach is very familiar: Attack the legal system.

"This was a rigged decision, right from day one," Trump told reporters at the courthouse on Thursday less than an hour after being found guilty and echoing past comments the Republican has made designed to brace voters for the possibility of a guilty verdict .

Expect that effort to continue now that a jury has found the former president guilty, while supporters of President Joe Biden will likely argue that the unprecedented verdict proves Trump is unfit for another four-year term.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

On point, the Trump campaign sent out a series of fundraising solicitations within minutes of the verdict. “I am a political prisoner!” he told potential donors.

More rallies, more fundraisers

So what comes after Trump's historic conviction?

Sentencing will come on July 11, just four days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee where Trump is set to accept the GOP presidential nomination.

Don't expect that looming decision to stop the former president and his campaign from holding rallies and fundraisers, giving him more chances to argue that the judge and prosecutors played politics in pursuing the hush money case against him.

Trump will also be preparing for a couple of important events. There's a June 27 debate with Biden hosted by CNN in Atlanta, as well as the decision on selecting a running mate . The former president has said he will probably announce his pick at the Republican convention, scheduled for July 15-18 in Milwaukee.

In the meantime, pollsters associated with Trump and Biden will pore over data to assess how voters react to the first-ever conviction of a former president and current presidential candidate.

One thing Trump likely won't have to worry about anytime soon: Prison. He plans to appeal the verdict, and that process could drag out for years.

Target: Independents

The coming campaign will be directed at a relatively small number of voters: Independents who are on the fence between Trump and Biden.

Campaign officials and independent pollsters have said for months that the verdict will have no impact on Trump partisans; nor will it affect solid Biden voters.

Everybody else? No one really knows how they will react to a convicted felon running for president. After all, it's never happened.

But even a small percentage turning away from Trump could make a difference in tightly contested battleground states like Arizona, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

At the same time, Trump has suggested that even a guilty verdict could help him because "the people of the country see this as a rigged deal."

It's a pitch that still has to play out, but the trial itself does not seem to have hurt Trump much. The former president is  leading Biden slightly  in many polls nationwide and in battleground states, although most of those leads are within margins of error.

During the six-week trial, Trump was able to campaign and do fundraisers on Wednesday, the court's off-day, and on weekends. Now look for him to work on the campaign just about every day of the week. That starts with a press conference Trump is planning for Friday at his namesake tower in midtown Manhattan.

The Biden campaign also enters a new phase

Trump will also have to contend with a more aggressive Biden campaign, which is relishing the idea of running against the former president following a conviction.

During the trial, Biden officials said they don't plan to focus exclusively on the guilty verdict, but the full panoply of allegations against Trump.

The former president has been indicted in three other criminal cases, including two accusing him of trying to steal the 2020 race for the White House. In civil court actions, Trump has been found liable for bank fraud and sexual abuse .

Michael Tyler, the Biden campaign's communications director, said the Trump guilty verdict proves that “no one is above the law,” but the election will be decided on issues like the former president's threat to be a “dictator on day one” and his willingness to promote authoritarianism and violence.

“There is still only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the ballot box,” Tyler said. “Convicted felon or not, Trump will be the Republican nominee for president. The threat Trump poses to our democracy has never been greater.”

One thing is clear: Trump and Biden's post-conviction playbooks will be put to the test this summer as the candidates both seek a second term.

Sarah Longwell, who as founder of the organization Republican Voters Against Trump has conducted many focus groups, predicted that the verdict “won’t be a public opinion earthquake.” But she said it could still be significant.

“In an election where inches will matter,” she said, “this just created a new barrier for undecided swing voters: voting for a convicted felon.”

More trials? Who knows?

Another unknown is whether Trump will face another trial before Election Day on Nov. 5.

The former president is facing federal criminal charges in Washington accusing him of trying to steal the 2020 election from Biden. But that trial was delayed when the Supreme Court agreed to hear Trump's claim that he should be immune from prosecution for presidential actions.

The court is expected to rule around the start of July, and a decision against Trump could mean a trial before Election Day – perhaps in the middle of the fall campaign season.

A favorable Trump ruling would almost certainly push the trial past Election Day.

There are also no trial dates scheduled for Trump in the South Florida federal case over allegations the former president mishandled classified information and obstructed justice and the one in Georgia over his attempts targeting the 2020 election results in the Peach State.

1. Order life-changing ramen in Tokyo

can i get travel money at the post office

If you’ve read our guide on the best redemption options for Membership Rewards, you’ll know that your best option—by far—is to transfer your points to an airline or hotel loyalty program.

Amex has 21 transfer partners as of this writing, including 18 airlines and three hotel chains (complete list below). Unless otherwise stated, you can transfer 1,000 Membership Rewards Points (MRP) in exchange for 1,000 partner points, meaning a 1:1 transfer rate.

Airline partners

  • AeroMexico (1,000 MRP to 1,600 AeroMexico Rewards Points)
  • AIR FRANCE KLM
  • ANA Mileage Club
  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Emirates Skywards
  • Etihad Guest
  • HawaiianMiles
  • Iberia Plus
  • JetBlue TrueBlue (250 MRP to 200 TrueBlue points)
  • Qantas Frequent Flyer (500 MRP to 500 Qantas Points)
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer
  • Virgin Atlantic Flying Club

Hotel partners

  • Choice Privileges
  • Hilton Honors (1,000 MRP to 2,000 Hilton Honors Points)
  • Marriott Bonvoy

Now, how does this chart help you order comfortingly hot, gloriously authentic ramen in Tokyo?

Well, the trick to redeeming Membership Rewards Points is to know which partner has the most valuable points. Japan’s largest airline ANA, for example, has points that can sometimes be worth well over 2 cents per point (CPP) each. That means a flight from JFK to Tokyo—which would normally cost you well over $800—may cost you as little as 40,000 ANA Mileage Club Miles round trip . See the example from my own research below:

can i get travel money at the post office

That means if you have 100,000 Membership Rewards points at your disposal–and you’re flexible on dates–you and a companion could fly all the way around the world with 20,000 Membership Rewards points to spare.

From there, you can take a Mt. Fuji tour by day…

… and explore the world’s largest city by night, sipping tonkotsu broth before you embark on your Winter Illumination Tour.

can i get travel money at the post office

Of course, 100,000 Membership Rewards Points won’t cover 100% of your expenses the entire time you’re in Tokyo—but speaking from firsthand experience, getting to Tokyo is by far the most expensive part. Once you’re there, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that an authentic bowl of ramen costs around ¥1200 or roughly $7.60.

Oh, and if you’re looking to earn a generous rate of 4X Membership Rewards Points per dollar spent as you satisfy your inner foodie, remember to bring your American Express Gold Card for its dining rewards.

American Express® Gold Card

  • 4x Earn 4X Membership Rewards® Points at restaurants (including takeout and delivery in the U.S.)
  • 4x Earn 4X Membership Rewards® points at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 per calendar year in purchases, then 1x).
  • 3x Earn 3X Membership Rewards® points on flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com booked directly with the airline or on amextravel.com.
  • 1x Earn 1X points on all other eligible purchases
  • High rewards at U.S. supermarkets, dining in and dining out.
  • Up to $120 a year in credits for eligible dining ($10 each month).
  • Up to $120 a year in Uber Cash ($10 each month), good for Uber rides or Uber Eats.
  • The $250 annual fee might be unpalatable to some.
  • The dining credits and Uber Cash credits are doled out monthly, in $10 increments.
  • Outside of dining, U.S. supermarkets and airfare, the card’s earnings are plain vanilla.
  • Travel benefits including car rental insurance, trip cancellation/interruption and travel delay protection

All that being said, if you’d prefer to explore a sprawling, adventure-rich metropolis closer to home, why not spend your hard-earned MRP in the Big Apple? Here’s how.

2. Explore NYC, starting five blocks from Central Park

can i get travel money at the post office

With New York being as expensive as it is, you might already be wondering: how far can 100,000 MRP really take you once you’re there?

Turns out, it can get you within shouting distance of Central Park—and you won’t have to live like the cast of Rent, either.

Thanks to a 1,000-to-2,000 transfer ratio, your 100,000 Membership Rewards Points can instantly become 200,000 Hilton Honors points. If you can save a mere 500 more Membership Rewards Points/1,000 Hilton Honors points, you’ll have exactly enough in the bank to book a three-night stay at the New York Hilton Midtown based on what my research turned up.

can i get travel money at the post office

Among the seemingly billions of hotel options in New York, what makes the New York Hilton Midtown special?

Well, not only is it insanely good value for New York lodging—it’s also within a roughly 10-minute walk of Times Square, Rockefeller Center and Central Park.

can i get travel money at the post office

That means you and your companion can follow in the footsteps of Carrie Bradshaw, Joey Tribbiani and Buddy the Elf without ever having to hail a cab. And while a three-nighter in a New York Hilton will quickly wipe out the stash of Membership Rewards you’re working with in this example, you don’t have to pay another penny to enjoy the natural splendor of Central Park in autumn.

can i get travel money at the post office

Now, maybe you’re thinking Tokyo and New York are fine—but you want to spend your 100,000 Membership Rewards Points on something you feel is truly unique and special. Something you’ve never done before. Something you can tell your friends about and they’ll go you did WHAT?

If so, allow me to introduce you to the mighty Australian wombat.

3. See the opera in Sydney and maybe pet a wombat

can i get travel money at the post office

Beyond ANA and Hilton, another Amex partner with favorable transfer ratios is Australia’s own Qantas Airways Limited.

After a quick search, I found a flight option from San Francisco to Sydney for $1,152 or 41,900 Miles plus $99 cash. That means 41,900 Miles covered $1,053 of the fare, or provided over 2.5 CPP each.

can i get travel money at the post office

Now, to set expectations, that’s 41,900 Miles one-way—so you’ll likely have to pay something out of pocket to fly both you and a companion “down under,” as well as cover lodging.

But 100,000 Membership Rewards points (transferred 1:1 to Qantas) will still foot a massive chunk of the bill, and for further consideration, look who will be waiting for you:

can i get travel money at the post office

Yes, in addition to ‘roos and snakes, Australia is home to the adorable, friendly wombat. You can take a day tour from Sydney to meet both kangaroos and wombats up close before enjoying a lunch that I’d guess must involve some degree of vegemite.

Then, in the evening, why not a twilight cruise through Sydney harbor?

can i get travel money at the post office

Yes, I confess again that 100,000 Membership Rewards Points won’t get you and your plus-one all the way to Australia and back, nor will it fully cover lodging while you’re there. But I wanted to highlight this option nonetheless to show just how much value Qantas is willing to give you for your Membership Rewards Points—and point out that a wombat-filled Aussie adventure could be well within your financial reach.

The takeaway

Amex’s long list of transfer partners is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it gives you tons of options. But on the other hand, it gives you tons of options , which can make choosing and planning the perfect trip rather tricky.

Hopefully one day AI will help us spend our credit card rewards like a robot travel agent, running endless calculations to find the ideal redemption path. But until then, it’s a more manual process.

At least it’s a massively rewarding one, with wombats, cherry blossoms and $1 New York slices awaiting our arrival.

Trump guilty in "hush money" trial as jury hands down verdict on felony charges

By Graham Kates , Katrina Kaufman , Olivia Rinaldi

Updated on: May 31, 2024 / 9:26 AM EDT / CBS News

Former President Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 felonies by the jury in his "hush money" trial in New York on Thursday, making him the first former president in U.S. history to be convicted of a crime.

The jury, composed of 12 Manhattan residents, found that Trump illegally falsified business records to cover up a $130,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. They found him guilty on all counts on their second day of deliberations .

The presumptive Republican nominee for president is now also a convicted felon, a label that will reverberate across the electorate in the months between now and Election Day in November.

Trump spoke  about the verdict at Trump Tower in New York on Friday, calling the trial "very unfair," a "scam" and "rigged."

The verdict was handed down in the same Manhattan courtroom where Trump has been on trial for the past six weeks. Trump stared at each juror as they confirmed their vote to convict and angrily denounced the decision in the hallway outside the courtroom, vowing to fight the conviction.

Jurors sided with prosecutors who said that Trump authorized the plan to falsify checks and related records in an effort to prevent voters from learning of an alleged sexual encounter with Daniels. Prosecutors from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office said the conspiracy spanned his 2016 campaign and continued well into his first year in the White House. Trump denied having sex with Daniels and pleaded not guilty.

Justice Juan Merchan set a sentencing date of July 11, just four days before the start of the Republican National Convention, where Trump will be formally nominated as the party's standard-bearer. He  could face up to four years in prison and a $5,000 fine for each count, but Merchan has broad discretion when imposing a sentence, and could limit the punishment to a fine, probation, home confinement or other options.

The jury asked to review several portions of testimony and the judge's instructions Thursday morning before they deliberated behind closed doors for several hours. Here's how the historic day at the courthouse unfolded, from the time the jurors alerted the court that they had reached a verdict:

What is Trump charged with?

Trump is charged with 34 counts of falsification of business records in the first degree, which is a felony in New York state.

Each charge corresponds to a document that was created to pay Michael Cohen $35,000 a month in 2017: the checks themselves, the invoices Cohen sent to get reimbursed and the vouchers the Trump Organization used to record the payment.

Prosecutors say those checks were meant to reimburse Cohen for the $130,000 "hush money" payment that he made to adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016 in exchange for her silence about an alleged sexual encounter she said she had with Trump years earlier. Trump's defense said the payments to Cohen were to pay for his legal services.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all counts and denied all wrongdoing.

Verdict came as judge was prepared to send jurors home

Just before 4:15 p.m., Merchan, the judge, said in court that he was prepared to dismiss the jurors for the day at 4:30, and have them reconvene for a third day of deliberations on Friday. Then, minutes later, he said jurors had sent a note, saying they had reached a verdict.

What happens if Trump is convicted?

When the judge found on May 6 that Trump had violated his gag order for a 10th time, he told him that "the last thing I want to do is to put you in jail."

"You are the former president of the United States and possibly the next president , as well," said Justice Juan Merchan, reflecting on the momentous weight of such a decision.

Whether to jail the Republican Party's presumptive nominee for president is a choice that Merchan may soon face again, if jurors in Trump's "hush money" case have voted to convict him .

What exactly would happen if the jury finds Trump guilty is difficult to predict. Trump is being tried in New York state court, where judges have broad authority to determine when sentences are handed down after convictions and what exactly they will be, according to former Manhattan prosecutor Duncan Levin. That differs from federal court, where there's typically a waiting period between a conviction and sentencing.

"It's much more informally done in state court. I've had cases where the jury comes back and says, 'guilty,' and the judge thanks the jury, and excuses them, and says, 'Let's sentence the defendant right now," said Levin. "Obviously, everything's a little different about this case than the typical case."

In a process that took just minutes, the foreperson of the jury said the jurors had reached consensus on a verdict.

One by one, the foreperson read through the verdict for each count, prompted by the court clerk: "Guilty. Guilty. Guilty."

Each juror was asked individually if they agreed with the verdict. Trump stared directly at each one as they confirmed their decision.

Judge thanks jurors for their service in "very stressful" case

After the jury was read in court, Merchan thanked the jurors for their service, noting that the court started the jury selection process on April 15.

"That's a long time to be away from your jobs, your families, your responsibilities, but not only that — you were engaged in a very stressful … task," he said. "I admire how involved you were, how engaged you were throughout this task."

He told them they're free to speak about their service, but aren't required to.

"No one can make you do anything that you don't want to do. The choice is yours," he said.

Merchan asked to meet with them in the jury room to thank them personally. He said he is not allowed to discuss the case or facts, but would also like feedback about what was done right and wrong.

"At this time, I thank you for your service, you're excused," he said.

Trump slams jury's decision as a "disgrace," vows to fight verdict

Trump spoke to reporters in the hallway outside the courtroom, reacting angrily to the jury's unanimous verdict and railing against the judge.

"This was a disgrace. This was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge who was corrupt," Trump said, reiterating the criticism he has leveled at the court since the trial began.

The presumptive GOP nominee said the case is "far from over."

"The real verdict is going to be Nov. 5 by the people, and they know what happened here and everybody knows what happened here," Trump said. "We'll fight to the end."

Can Trump still become president after his felony conviction?

Trump's conviction does not disqualify him from becoming president again if he wins at the ballot box in November.

The Constitution imposes very few prerequisites for the presidency — a candidate must be at least 35 years of age, natural-born citizens and a U.S. resident for a minimum of 14 years. It says nothing about the impact of a felony conviction on a president's ability to serve.

"The short answer is yes, that there's no constitutional bar," said Corey Brettschneider, a lawyer and professor of political science at Brown University and author of "The Presidents and the People." "The Constitution lays out some specific requirements of what's required … but there's nothing explicitly in the Constitution about being convicted of a crime as a disqualification."

How Trump's conviction could impact the 2024 presidential race

Trump's conviction adds another layer of uncertainty to an already unprecedented presidential campaign.

As a convicted felon, Trump is not prevented from continuing to campaign for president , since the Constitution does not prohibit candidates from running for president even if they are convicted of a crime. In fact, there is precedent for a candidate running from behind bars: In 1920, Socialist Party candidate Eugene V. Debs ran for president from a federal penitentiary in Atlanta.

Trump is the first former U.S. president to be found guilty of felonies, and the first major party candidate to run for office after being found guilty of a crime. The conviction could affect how Trump campaigns from now until November, depending on the appeals process and what kind of sentence he receives. Politically, the public's view of the trial largely split along party lines in recent polling, but the guilty verdict gives the Biden campaign a potentially potent new weapon in their arsenal.

Can a president pardon himself?

The first-ever felony conviction of a former president — and one who is again running for the office — has raised legal questions about whether a president may pardon himself. (The hypothetical doesn't apply in this case, since the charges are on the state level. But Trump also faces two outstanding federal cases.)

"The big unanswered question is whether the president might be able to pardon himself," Jeffrey Crouch, an assistant professor of American politics at American University and an expert on executive clemency. "No president has ever tried it, so we don't know what the result would be if it was attempted."

The Constitution gives the president broad power to pardon federal crimes, except in cases involving impeachment. The president also can't pardon state offenses, like the charges in New York. Apart from that, in explicit terms, the Constitution is quiet. And history and precedent don't offer significant insight, says Harvard constitutional scholar Mark Tushnet.

"The arguments about whether a president can pardon himself are not only unsettled in the sense that they haven't come up before, but they're also unsettled in the sense that reasonable lawyers could look at the materials and say either result is legally defensible," Tushnet said.

Congressional Republicans stick by Trump, call his conviction a "travesty of justice"

Republicans derided the verdict in Trump's New York "hush money" criminal trial, sticking by their presumptive nominee for president and claiming bias by the judge — and the jury — against the former president as he was found guilty on all 34 felony counts.

"Today is a shameful day in American history," Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a statement. "This was a purely political exercise, not a legal one."

Bragg won't say whether he'll seek prison sentence for Trump

Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg said at a news conference Thursday evening that the only voice that mattered in this case was that of the jury, which he praised as "careful and attentive" in its consideration of the case against the former president.

Bragg declined to say whether he'd recommend a sentence for Trump. Sentencing is July 11, he noted, saying the D.A.'s office would speak in court and through its court filings.

"While this defendant may be unlike any other in American history, we arrived at this trial and ultimately today at this verdict in the same manner as every other case that comes through the courtroom doors," Bragg said.

Responding to criticism from Trump's supporters, Bragg said the "only voice that matters is the voice of the jury, and the jury has spoken."

Biden campaign warns Trump can still become president, "convicted felon or not"

The Biden campaign warned that former Trump's conviction doesn't prevent him from winning another term in the White House from a legal standpoint .

"There is still only one way to keep Donald Trump out of the Oval Office: at the ballot box. Convicted felon or not, Trump will be the Republican nominee for president," the campaign's communications director Michael Tyler said in a statement.

Tyler said the verdict shows "no one is above the law," but it also "does not change the fact that the American people face a simple reality."

"The threat Trump poses to our democracy has never been greater. He is running an increasingly unhinged campaign of revenge and retribution, pledging to be a dictator 'on day one' and calling for our Constitution to be 'terminated' so he can regain and keep power," the statement said. "A second Trump term means chaos, ripping away Americans' freedoms and fomenting political violence — and the American people will reject it this November."

Trump campaign says fundraising site was overwhelmed by response after conviction

Trump was quick to seize on his conviction for fundraising purposes, sending a text that read, "I was just convicted in a rigged trial! I am a political prisoner!" But soon afterward, the link to donate was no longer working. Trump campaign senior adviser Brian Hughes confirmed that the campaign's fundraising system had been almost immediately overwhelmed by the response.

"From just minutes after the verdict, the digital fundraising system has been hit with record numbers of supporters," Hughes said in a statement. "The traffic is so large that it is causing intermittent delays."

He added that the campaign was "grateful for this massive outpouring of support because it shows that Americans have seen this sham trial as the political election interference that Biden and Democrats have always intended."

The former president was convicted in New York in a state case without federal involvement.

Election latest: Sunak not taking questions amid talk of Tory battle to succeed him - as Dragon joins Starmer at brewery

A poll has found Reform's Nigel Farage would be the favourite to take over as Tory leader if Rishi Sunak loses the election. Labour says the Conservatives are already battling over the succession. Earlier, the transport secretary denied that the PM's D-Day blunder had lost the election.

Rishi Sunak has faced impromptu questioning over the state of the NHS for a second time in 24 hours.

The prime minister was on the campaign trail again today - but was not taking any questions from journalists as the row over his early departure from D-Day rumbles on.

He attended a fete in his own constituency, where he ended up being challenged over the state of the NHS.

This comes after he was challenged at a campaign rally on Friday over GPs (see here ).

Today, a woman who identified herself as a consultant called Chloe stopped the prime minister and asked him for "his plan for waiting lists" - and claimed the government had left the NHS "completely unprepared" for the pandemic.

The pair shook hands at the start of the encounter, and Mr Sunak moved on after around 30 seconds.

Families with children have been hit hardest by benefit cuts over the past 14 years, according to a new report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS).

Parents who are out of work have seen the biggest fall in their incomes, with the IFS saying they had lost £5,500 per year, but in-work families had also seen their entitlements cut back.

Families with children have seen their incomes fall by an average of £2,200 per year, the thinktank said.

Changes to the level of child tax credits and the "two-child limit" on Universal Credit payments affected families, as did the overall benefit cap, the IFS found.

On Friday, the Conservatives announced plans to raise the high-income child benefit tax charge threshold to £120,000, increasing the number of families that would qualify.

But the IFS said this would only "partly" undo the changes of the past 14 years and "still leave the broad picture little changed".

61% of people quizzed in an exclusive Sky News poll think the NHS is in a "poor state", with parts of it "broken".

Reducing NHS waiting times is the issue voters want the next government to prioritise, with 39% of people saying it was their top issue.

The same Sky News poll asked voters who they trust most to run the NHS. The majority - 32% - said Labour, while only 9% thought the Conservatives.

But a quarter of those polled didn't think any party could be trusted with the NHS.

With waiting times on voters' minds, Sky's people and politics correspondent Nick Martin spoke to Jasmine, one of the millions waiting months, sometimes years, for treatment.

At 23, she has spent the last 11 years battling endometriosis and lives with what feels like "a ball of acid in the middle of my torso".

The latest Sky News poll tracker has the Conservatives on the same level of support - just 22.8% - as the day Liz Truss left office.

Labour has 43.6% of the share, while Reform UK is on 13.1%, Lib Dems on 9.6%, Greens on 5.7% and SN p on 3%.

Rishi Sunak took up a watering can and was encouraged to apply for an allotment garden by volunteers while on the campaign trail in County Durham.

An opportunity for the media to ask questions of Rishi Sunak did not take place as was originally planned, likely following the fallout on Friday of his early return from D-Day commemorations.

Members of the public could be seen gathered on a hillside above the garden to try to catch a glimpse of the prime minister.

At the garden, Mr Sunak spoke with volunteers Margaret Lambert and Hilary Bellwood and watered plants with Jane MacBean, Conservative candidate for Bishop Auckland.

Sir Keir Starmer has promised to overhaul the business rates system, saying there's "not a level playing field between businesses that are online and those that are ... bricks and mortar".

The Labour leader was joined by Dragons' Den star Deborah Meaden at 3 Locks Brewery in Camden, London, to launch the party's plan for small businesses.

"We want small businesses to thrive because they are the backbone of our economy and they need that stability in our economy, and they need to know that their energy bills are actually going to be lower and stable," he said.

Labour launched its plans for Great British Energy policy a week ago - a new, publicly owned company that would generate homegrown green energy across the country.

Meaden voiced her support for the plans: "Businesses don't like being out of control of costs and energy is one of those costs that simply fluctuates beyond your control," she said.

Sir Keir pulled the first pint of the day at 10.55am and was heard saying "if all else fails", he will be back at the brewery on 5 July.

John Swinney says Rishi Sunak "completely destroyed" his credibility as prime minister by leaving D-Day commemorations early.

Speaking to journalists on the campaign trail in Livingston, the Scottish First Minister said: "I think Rishi Sunak's credibility is completely destroyed by his departure from D-Day early and the insult he delivered to the veterans who had travelled to Normandy for that solemn occasion.

"It also, frankly, was a desertion of the international responsibilities of the prime minister.

"The prime minister and especially the Conservative election campaign is now utterly in tatters."

Mr Sunak was forced to apologise for leaving France before an international ceremony attended by world leaders, saying it had been a mistake - but he said it was important not to "politicise" the decision.

The Tory battle bus has rolled into County Durham, with Rishi Sunak heading to two locations in the North East today - but don't expect him to be answering questions.

The PM is not doing any interviews with national or broadcast media today and a possible huddle - when he takes questions from reporters off-camera - has been cancelled.

He may, however, do some interviews with regional media.

While the PM may not be speaking for himself today, much has been said this morning about his decision to bow out of D-Day commemorations early.

Shadow business secretary Jonathan Reynolds called it "inexplicable" while Sir Ed Davey said it made him "pretty cross" and Transport Secretary Mark Harper labelled it a "mistake" - but said it wouldn't cost the Tories the election.

The Lib Dem leader says he's "pretty cross" about Rishi Sunak's decision to leave D-Day commemorations early and has called on him to make a donation to a veterans' charity to make amends.

Sir Ed Davey urged the Conservatives to give some of the cash donated to the party by Frank Hester, a businessman who was embroiled in a racism row, to charity.

"I think the Conservative Party should give £5m of that donation to a veterans' charity. I think if they did that, then people might be able to draw the line.

"But it's such a letdown for our whole country and our history, particularly for our brave veterans."

The Liberal Democrats have pledged to create three new national parks in England.

This manifesto commitment would bring the number of national parks in England up to 13, with the party saying it would spend £50m a year maintaining them.

The Chilterns in Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire are possible locations for the new parks, along with the Mendips, Cotswolds and Quantocks.

Other proposed areas include the Surrey Hills, Northumberland coast and Dorset.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey accused the Tories of having "broken too many promises to protect our countryside".

"It is hard to overstate the difference things like National Parks can make to entire communities," he said.

Manage and top up your Travel Money Card account online. Find the answers to the most frequently asked questions. Or get in touch with our travel team if you still need to.

Just so you know

Due to some site maintenance, you won’t be able to access your online or travel app accounts from 5pm to 8pm BST on Sunday 9 June. You can still use your Travel Money Card for purchases and ATM withdrawals. Please bear with us while we complete this work.

Common Travel Money Card questions

  • Before you go
  • Currency questions
  • While you’re away
  • Lost cards and leftover funds

Do I have to pass a credit check to purchase a Travel Money Card?

No. We’ll carry out an electronic address verification check based on the information you provide. This will be stored but will not affect any credit rating.

How long will my card take to arrive?

If you order your card online it will be delivered to your home address in two to three working days. If you require a card in a shorter time please check with your local Post Office branch. Exchange rates vary between online and branch.

What do I need to do before I travel?

Before leaving the UK, make sure you have activated your Travel Money Card. Activation can be done through the free Post Office Travel app – download now from the Apple App Store or Google Play . The app allows you to top up, track spend, view balances and freeze spend.

Activation can also be done by calling our automated line on +44(0) 20 7937 0280. Full details can be found on the letter that comes attached to you your card.

How do I get my PIN / Change my PIN?

To get your PIN, download the free Post Office Travel app from the App Store or Google Play , create an account and you can check your PIN wherever you are in the world.

Alternatively, you can call our automated line on +44 (0)20 7937 0280 and select Option 1. Your change of PIN can only be done at UK ATM’s that accept Mastercard and offer the PIN change facility.

Which currencies can I load on my card?

You can load any of the following currencies on to your card. The card can hold up to 22 currencies at once, but they can only be loaded one at a time:

Euro, US dollars, Australian dollars, Canadian dollars, New Zealand dollars, Thai baht, UAE dirham, Turkish lira, South African rand, Swiss francs, Polish zloty, pounds Sterling, Chinese yuan, Czech koruna, Danish kroner, Hong Kong dollar, Hungarian forint, Japanese yen, Norwegian krone, Saudi riyal, Singapore dollar or Swedish krona.

Which currency should I load?

We recommend that you load the currency of the country that you’re travelling to. If we don’t offer that currency we recommend that you load pounds Sterling on to your card.

Should I pay in Sterling if given the choice while abroad?

We recommend that you always pay in the local currency and not Sterling. This will prevent high fees and very poor exchange rates being applied at an ATM or retailer. This is known as Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) . We include information about DCC in every card pack.

Using your card abroad

Where can i use my card.

Your card can be used wherever Mastercard is accepted.

Is there anywhere that my card won’t work?

We have to authorise your card immediately which means a small number of locations may not be able to take your card. This includes unmanned petrol pumps, toll booths and on board cruise ships or aeroplanes.

Anywhere I shouldn’t use my card?

We recommend that your card is not used to pay deposits on car hire or used when checking in to hotels that require a deposit. Both of these could lead to funds being held by the retailer, which would prevent you from using them.

Can I withdraw money from ATMs?

Yes you can. You can use any ATM that’s accepts Mastercard. Fees will apply for every cash withdrawal. These fees are detailed online or on your welcome letter. Please be aware that some ATMs may also charge you and this should always be displayed on the ATM screen. We always recommend that you withdraw cash in local currency and don’t choose to pay in Sterling or accept their currency conversion.

Topping up and managing currencies

How can i top up my card with more money.

The easiest way is via our mobile app, which is available to download from the App Store or on Google Play .

You can also top up via our website if you’ve created an account. And you can ask friends or family to top up on your behalf in any UK Post Office branch, too. All they need is your card number.

Can I top up with a different currency to the one I loaded in the first place?

Yes, you can. Our multi-currency card allows you to load any of the 22 currencies we offer.

Do I have to move money from one currency to another?

No, you don’t have to move money. If you have money in one currency and spend in a different currency we’ll automatically move this for you to authorise a transaction. Alternatively, you can move the funds using the "Transfer" icon on the free Post Office Travel app ( App Store , Google Play ) or "Transfer to another wallet" icon if managing your account online .

How can I track my balance?

The easiest way is to use our mobile app. This shows clearly what your remaining balance is in each currency. We do not recommend the use of ATMs to check your balance as they will provide a GBP figure using a different exchange rate. Remember, your balance is held in each currency so is not affected by exchange rates unless you change it to other currencies.

Download the Post Office Travel app from the Apple App Store or Google Play .

What do I do if my card is lost or stolen?

You need to call us immediately on +44 (0) 20 7937 0280. We’re here 24 hours a day.

We’ll cancel your card and work out the best way to replace it. A fee may be charged if we need to courier a replacement card overseas.

If you think you have misplaced your card and want peace of mind, you can freeze spend on your card using the Post Office Travel app, available on the App Store and Google Play . You can unfreeze just as easily if you find your card again.

I have money left on my card. What do I do?

You have 4 options available to you:

  • Leave the money on your card for your next holiday
  • Visit any Post Office branch and withdraw the balance over the counter in Sterling. There is a daily withdrawal limit of £300 per day
  • Spend your money in the UK as normal. We will move the money to Sterling every time you pay for something. Anything you don’t spend stays in the currency you have on the card. No fees apply, we just use the day’s exchange rate
  • Call us to ask for a refund. Please note that you will get a better exchange rate by spending on your card or withdrawing cash from a Post Office branch
