Explore Texas

Houston • dallas • san antonio • austin, the lone star state, cowboy charm & western boots, rustic & modern ranches, remember the alamo, bluebonnets & austin city limits, get to know texas.

It conjures up visions of cowboys and rodeos, but there’s so much more to Texas than the obvious. Sure, it lives up to its reputation — you won’t be disappointed if you’re hoping to visit a ranch or purchase a pair of Western boots — but when you delve deeper you’ll find that there’s far more to explore, from history to amusement parks to sports to food venues. Where to begin? Here’s where you should go when you book a bus ticket to Texas.

There's no shortage of things to do in Texas.

A look at culture in texas.

The Lone Star State is, for many people, a dream destination. It’s high on must-visit lists for so many reasons: the incredible sports scene, the classic foods (chili, barbecue, sweet tea, and the list goes on) and the opportunity to road trip from one amazing city to the next. It’s all fabulous, including the weather. But one thing that really sticks in visitors’ minds when they leave? The friendly faces. People are simply polite, respectful and welcoming, whether you’re a complete newcomer or have visited a few times. If you book a bus ticket to Texas in the fall, be mindful of one thing: football is essentially the state religion, which means you may be roped into going to a game or expressing your support for one of the state’s many collegiate teams. And if it’s spring, don’t be surprised to see those friendly faces along the road, taking pictures and snapping selfies of themselves in jumbo fields of bluebonnets, the state’s official flower that grows in abundance when temperatures soar.

A Brief History of Texas

In 1836, American colonists sought their independence from Mexico — it was the start of the Texas Revolution — the most important and famous battle to develop from it was the Battle at the Alamo. Although America was defeated, the fight was a source of inspiration and renewed vigor that helped Texas achieve its independence in 1836 following the Battle at San Jacinto. The state was admitted to the Union in 1845 but seceded in 1861 to join the Confederacy during the Civil War. Though Lincoln freed all slaves through the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it didn’t affect those in the Confederate states. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865, that the slaves were ordered to be freed — a date that today is recognized as “Juneteenth.” The state was also home to the first United States military flight, which occurred in San Antonio in 1910.

Things to do in Houston

About houston.

As the most populous city in Texas, there are plenty of things to do in Houston today. Whether you’re looking for a full touristy experience or want to get off the beaten path, there’s a wide range of Houston events and attractions to choose from. Whatever your budget and style, Houston has something to offer every traveler.

Places of interest in Houston

There’s something for everyone in Houston. The city is well known as the world’s leading center for space exploration, and kids and adults alike will enjoy the excitement of a trip to Space Center Houston, where you can learn all about NASA and get a behind-the-scenes look at space exploration.

For something completely different, don’t miss the Gerald D. Hines Waterwall Park in uptown Houston. This multi-story sculptural fountain offers a thoroughly tranquil experience and is truly a sight to behold. The waterwall was constructed in 1985 and has become a prominent part of the city landscape - if you’re lucky, you might even catch a concert there.

Don’t miss out on Buffalo Bayou Park when in Houston. This 2.3-mile park runs along the banks of the Buffalo Bayou in the downtown area of the city and covers a total of 160 acres. It’s a great place to run, walk, cycle - or simply get away from it all if you need some time out from the hustle and bustle of the big city.

You’re also sure to spot the Pioneer Memorial, a granite obelisk in Hermann Park which is dedicated to the early pioneers who founded Houston.

Houston’s culture and history

From live music to incredible southern food, Houston is a city brimming with culture. Be sure to pay a visit to the Houston Museum District, where you’ll find 19 museums grouped together into 4 walkable zones. Some of the best include The Children’s Museum of Houston, a bright, bold and fun interactive museum that big kids and little kids alike are sure to love, and the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

The Menil Collection is a must-visit for art lovers. Admission is free, and you’ll discover a collection of some 19,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs and rare books, including works by Cy Twombly, Max Ernst, and Joan Miró. However, the collection isn’t just focused on contemporary art. There are exhibitions covering art from the ancient world, surrealism, and everything in between.

You’ll also find the Rothko Chapel within the grounds of the Menil Collection, a peaceful place which serves as a chapel as well as a gallery, with 14 paintings by Mark Rothko.

You’ll almost always find concerts in Houston, whether at one of the big venues or a smaller, more intimate gig at a jazz bar. Whatever style of music you’re into, you’ll find something to suit you in Houston. Perhaps catch a concert by the Houston Symphony Orchestra at the Jones Hall or see some musical theater at Theatre Under The Stars. In fact, Houston has permanent resident companies in opera, ballet, music and theater, so you’re sure to find something that caters to your tastes on your trip.

If you’re in town in March, be sure to check out the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, the largest livestock exhibition and rodeo in the world, and a staple on Houston’s cultural calendar. Founded in 1931, the 20-day event has a jam-packed schedule of events which naturally features rodeo and livestock competitions, but also includes concerts, shopping and a carnival.

Areas surrounding Houston

There’s plenty to see and do in Houston, but if you want to explore what the surrounding areas have to offer, too, then you’re in for a treat as the area is rich with culture, nature and activities.

Galveston Island is just 50 miles south of Houston and is a great place for a day trip - or even longer if you have the time. Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is a retro-style pier where you can have a ride on the big wheel or a rollercoaster, whilst Galveston Island State Park offers 2000 acres of nature, from dunes to crashing waves.

In the other direction, 50 miles north of Houston, you’ll find the sprawling Sam Houston National Forest. One of the most popular things to do here is to hike the 128-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail - although you don’t have to walk the whole thing!

You could even explore what the other cities in Texas have to offer. The state capital, Austin , is just a short coach ride away - taking between 3 and 3.5 hours on a FlixBus. The two cities have a very different vibe, so if you have time to visit both in one trip, you’ll get a great feel for the diversity that the Lone Star State has to offer!

If you simply cancel your existing trip and purchase a new trip, your credit card will be charged for a second booking. Your cancellation will be governed by our normal cancellation policy which may result in a loss of fare or an issuance of Vonlane credit only.

Can I receive a refund?

Yes, all Vonlane tickets are fully refundable as long as you cancel 24 hours prior to the first leg of your trip. Tickets cancelled inside of 24 hours and prior to 2 hours before the departure time are re-usable for future travel at a value equal to the original fare paid. Are there baggage restrictions?

In order to ensure all passengers are accommodated, please limit your luggage to 2 bags of 50 pounds or less and 1 carry-on bag.

Is there a restroom?

Yes, every Vonlane Passenger First motor coach has a full restroom for your convenience. Unlike the airlines, you won't be sharing it with more than 100 people. Our coaches only hold 22 passengers.

Can pets travel?

Small dogs, weighing less than 10 pounds , in a carry-case that can fit by a passenger's legs, are allowed on a Vonlane coach. The carry-case must be fully enclosed and the dog fully secured in the case. The case is not permitted on any table, seat, or in the coach aisle. The case, with dog inside, must remain quietly on the floor by the passenger’s feet throughout the trip. The carry-case must not impede the personal space of any other passenger, their seat, or leg rest. Dogs that cannot remain quietly in the carry-case should not be brought aboard and passengers with loud animals may be asked to disembark the coach at a rest area. This is strictly enforced by our attendants. Cats and other animals are not allowed aboard the motor coaches.

Service animals that are "trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability" are allowed aboard without being in an animal carrier. All service animals must be harnessed and controlled by the passenger at all times. Vonlane adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA does not cover emotional support dogs. Runaway 'Trust Jesus' bus crashes ahead of Staten Island Trump rally

Runaway 'Trust Jesus' bus crashes ahead of Staten Island Trump rally

A Trump Store bus was involved in a traffic accident on Sunday ahead of a Staten Island rally for the former president. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), bystander Damian Cross shared a video of the crash's aftermath. A bus covered with Trump signs appeared sandwiched between a utility pole and a gas station sign.

Signs on the bus included "Trump Law and Order," "Trust Jesus," "Trump 2024," "Women for Trump," and "Let's Go Brandon."

One large sign on the side of the bus read, "Trump Store."

"It was parked by the CVS, and it rolled down," one witness told Cross. "Nobody was in it."

ALSO READ: Marjorie Taylor Greene: Ilhan Omar is ‘lucky’ to be in America

"Holy crap," Cross replied before suggesting that the accident had been a "freaking miracle" because no one was hurt when the bus crossed the intersection without a driver.

"This right after Trump gets declared guilty, unbelievable, if ever you needed a metaphor," he noted. "They're saying there's no airbrake on it, just bad luck."

Trump was not expected to appear at the Staten Island rally, but former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani said he would be there.

Should trump be allowed to run for office, trump supporters curse out nypd officers arresting them for blocking traffic.

Chaos erupted at a protest outside Trump Tower in Manhattan on Thursday, where supporters of former President Donald Trump clashed with New York police officers after participants tried to unfurl a giant pro-Trump flag in the street, obstructing traffic.

Ultimately, after multiple and repeated warnings to get out of the street, officers arrested people behind the flag stunt, while Trump supporters raged and shouted them down. Some chanted "Let them go! Let them go!" One man in the crowd could be seen gesticulating and shouting "F--- the Blue!"

The footage was originally captured by Freedomnews.tv, and posted by Ukrainian-born freelance journalist Oliya "Scootercaster."

The protest was in response to Trump being convicted on 34 felony charges for falsifying business records, as part of a scheme to cover up an extramarital affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels from voters in the 2016 presidential election.

According to former GOP operative turned anti-Trump strategist Ron Filipkowski, one of the people arrested has been identified as Dion Cini, "the owner of a business that sells giant flags that people display at their homes, in boat parades, and at Trump rallies."

Cini has been involved in a series of stunts where he would unfurl giant flags at sporting events, which usually ends with the flag being confiscated and him being escorted from the premises. On one occasion, he deployed a "Trump Won" banner at Yankee Stadium, causing widespread disruption. He has also suggested Trump should be made the first king of a new hereditary monarch family in the U.S.

Trump's felony conviction at the end of last month is scheduled to move to sentencing on July 11. He is expected to appeal the sentence after it is handed down by Judge Juan Merchan.

Mike Johnson just parroted 'great replacement theory' on Fox News: analyst

House Speaker Mike Johnson's comments to Fox News this week resemble a racist conspiracy theory that certain groups of people — particularly white people in Europe and North America — are being intentionally replaced by immigrants and people of different ethnic backgrounds.

That's according to Philip Bump, an analyst at The Washington Post who dived into the Louisiana Republican's response to Fox News on Wednesday night about his reaction to President Joe Biden's new executive order on immigration.

“This half-measure executive order he just did actually exacerbates the problem,” he told host Neil Cavuto. "He's allowing thousands of people over the border every day, before they just begin to enforce existing federal immigration law. It makes no sense. And everyone wants to know around the country, why would they do that? Because they want to turn these people into voters. That’s the only thing, the only rational explanation for what they have done.”

Bump rebuked Johnson's comments and said they were " just short of 'great replacement theory .'"

"The unfounded theory holds that there’s a secret plot to reshape American society by intentionally encouraging immigrants to enter the country," Bump wrote.

Johnson’s contention, Bump said, "mirrors his embrace of legislation aimed at curtailing already illegal, rare occurrences of voting by noncitizens," and means the House speaker endorses a "historical aberrant view of immigration, one that’s at a remarkable distance from the once-common idea that immigration is beneficial and a mark of U.S. exceptionalism."

Hostility toward social and cultural change is a "hallmark" of the GOP, Bump said, particularly among Trump supporters.

The Republican Party and their supporters are no strangers to the theory, which began on the fringes but has gradually become more mainstream in recent years, being repeated by prominent politicians and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who faced swift criticism after suggesting in 2021 the Democratic Party had a long-term goal to expand its voter base to consist of " more obedient voters from the Third World " in an effort to advance its agenda.

That same year, Rep. Scott Perry of Pennsylvania repeated the claim at a House Foreign Affairs Committee meeting, saying “native-born” Americans were purposely being replaced by immigrants to change the country's culture. Perry, who was named this week to the House Intelligence Committee , repeated the conspiracy theory earlier this year.

"When [Jamie] Raskin, when my colleague from Maryland talks about ' White Replacement Theory ' — 'Replacement Theory' is real," Perry said.

"They added 'white' to it to stop everybody from talking about it," Perry said, without elaborating on who he was referring to.

“For many Americans, what seems to be happening or what they believe right now is happening is what appears to them is we’re replacing national-born American — native-born Americans to permanently transform the landscape of this very nation,” said Perry in reference to the number of people trying to enter the country at the United States’ southern border.

And in 2022, GOP congressional candidate Neil Robinson Kumar of Arkansas said he ran to combat "the Great Replacement," which he called the "most pressing issue" facing his constituents and the nation.

"Millions of illegal aliens are pouring across our wide-open Southern Border, with hundreds of thousands of new arrivals every month," he said.

'Read the tea leaves': Ex-Trump lawyer says Cannon just signaled she might toss his case

A recent and surprising ruling from Florida federal court Judge Aileen Cannon suggests she's seriously considering dismissing charges against convicted felon Donald Trump , the former president's onetime lawyer argued Thursday.

Cannon's uncommon decision — allowing outside experts to speak in Trump's classified documents case at a hearing later this month — shows she's taking seriously claims that special counsel Jack Smith does not have the constitutional right to prosecute, Jim Trusty argued during a CNN appearance.

"You could read the tea leaves and think that might show that she's kind of struck by the amicus brief," Trusty told Jake Tapper.

Trusty was pointing specifically to a brief filed by former President Ronald Reagan's attorney general Ed Meese, which argued Smith was improperly appointed, wielded "tremendous power," and was "answerable to no one."

The amicus brief was filed in support of Trump's own motion to dismiss.

Despite Smith's protestations — namely that the former attorney general's arguments were " meritless " — Cannon ruled partially in Meese's favor when she scheduled a hearing to consider amici brief arguments.

Trump was supposed to stand trial in May , but Cannon indefinitely suspended his court date amid the flurry of hearing demands.

Earlier this week, the Trump-appointed judge doubled down by allowing attorneys tied to Meese's Federalist Society , a group dedicated to rooting out "orthodox liberal ideology" in the legal realm, to present arguments against Smith's "unlawful" appointment on June 21.

On Thursday, Trusty rejected the idea that Cannon was showing signs of bias or incompetence by arguing the multiple hearings — which critics say are serving as a delay tactic to Trump's benefit — increased transparency.

"There's a lot of people that are already kinda preemptively throwing stones at her saying she's overmatched, she doesn't know what she's doing," Trusty said. "We should say, let's air it all out."

But Trusty then admitted the decision to let the attorneys make Meese's argument in the upcoming hearing was odd.

"The only thing that's unusual about all the stuff, that I've heard, is in fact having amicus brief participants do argument as opposed to just submitting the briefs," Trusty said. "[They] really question the whole constitutionality of the special prosecutor."

For his part, Tapper appeared delighted that Trusty had brought up the former attorney general.

"If you're playing a Meese drinking game at home," Tapper declared, "drink."
