Amsterdam is calling, and you won’t believe all it has in store for you! Whether you’re into art, history, or just soaking up the city’s unique vibe , we’ve got you covered. And guess what? Our City Sightseeing bus and boat tours are a great way to get to all the coolest spots, so hop on and let’s dive into the best things to do in Amsterdam .

Table of Contents

Cruise the Canals

Tourist boat on canal in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has so many canals that it’s often referred to as the Venice of the North. Admittedly, there are more than 30 other Northern European cities that also claim that particular title! We reckon Amsterdam, with its more than 100km of canal and 1200 bridges, has the strongest case of all. You might even be able to make a case for Venice starting to call itself the Amsterdam of the South!

The main canals were built in the 17th century, at the height of the city’s Golden Age. They were built to help drain the city and reclaim land to allow for the rapid expansion that the city was enjoying at the time. Before then much of the city was marshy and uninhabitable. You can still see some of the city’s amazing Golden Age buildings as you cruise along the city’s waterways.

The buildings in Amsterdam are famous for their tendency to lean. This is because they’re built on peat and sand using deep wooden foundations which shift over the years. It’s funny how everyone loves a leaning building! You might not want to live in one, but they’re great to look at!

We offer you two ways to see the canals. One is a cruise and the other a hop-on hop-off boat service. Both are a great way to see the city and its wonderful waterways!

Immerse Yourself in Art at the Van Gogh Museum

bus tours of amsterdam city

The Van Gogh Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of works by the legendary Vincent van Gog h. You’ll be able to see some of his most famous works, such as “Sunflowers”, “The Yellow House” and “Bedroom”. No other museum in the world has such an extensive collection of this amazing artist’s work.

You’ll also be able to learn about his sadly short and troubled life that ended in suicide. Largely unrecognised in his own lifetime, Van Gogh would surely be amazed that Amsterdam has a museum dedicated to his work. The museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s life and creative process. It’s a must-visit for any art lover.

More Museums!

Exterior of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam

Stedelijk Museum

Immerse yourself in the world of modern and contemporary art at the Stedelijk. This brilliant museum is home to some of the last hundred years or so’s best artists. Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Matisse, Pollock and many more have some of their finest works on display here!

Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands. It tells the story of the country’s history and art. The museum is home to more than a million objects and more than 2000 paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, with works by such important painters as Vermeer and Rembrandt. It’s the best place in the city to learn about the country’s history.

Make sure you keep an eye out for the temporary exhibitions as they generally have some fascinating stories to tell.

Diamond Museum

The Diamond Museum is a real gem! Amsterdam has been at the centre of the diamond trade since the 16 th century. That’s more than 400 hundred years buying, cutting and selling diamonds! The Diamond Museum is the place to go to learn all about the diamond trade in the city and to see some amazing examples of this incredibly valuable mineral.

MOCO Museum

If you love a bit of street art, then the MOCO Museum is the place for you as it features work by Banksy. In fact, it’s the first museum in the world to have a permanent Banksy exhibition. Alongside the works by Banksy, the Moco Museum has lots of other fantastic contemporary and street art, from Andy Warhol to Damian Hirst, Tracey Emin and Jean Michel Basquiat.

Even more museums!

Keukenhof park in Amsterdam full of flowers and tulips.

Museumplein is definitely the heart of Amsterdam’s cultural life, but there are plenty of other brilliant museums in the city. Here are some of our favourites:

Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House tells the story of the famous Dutch girl who his in this house with her family to hide from the Nazis during the Second World war. It serves as a powerful testament to the importance of tolerance and understanding. This moving experience will stay with you long after you leave.

As you wander through the rooms, you’ll be transported back to a time of fear and uncertainty, but also hope and courage. The Anne Frank House is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, human rights, or simply the power of the written word.

National Maritime Museum

The National Maritime Museum is your gateway to the Netherlands’ rich seafaring heritage. Step aboard a replica of the 18th-century East Indiaman Amsterdam, docked right outside the museum, and imagine life on the high seas during the Dutch Golden Age.

Explore the museum’s vast collection of maritime artifacts, from intricate ship models to nautical instruments, and discover the stories of brave explorers, daring merchants, and skilled shipbuilders who shaped the nation’s maritime legacy. The history of the Netherlands would be very different without its maritime history!

NEMO Science Museum

Housed in a striking copper-green building shaped like a giant ship, NEMO offers five floors of hands-on exhibits, experiments, and workshops that will spark the curiosity of all ages. Explore the wonders of the human body, the secrets of the universe, and the magic of everyday phenomena. Delve into the world of energy, discover the principles of flight, or create your own chain reactions. NEMO’s interactive exhibits and exciting demonstrations make learning about science a truly unforgettable experience.

Don’t miss the rooftop terrace, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city while pondering the mysteries of the universe.

Where to get the best views

bus tours of amsterdam city

As a hop-on hop-off bus company, we’re big fans of seeing the city from up high. Amsterdam couldn’t be flatter, so there are no hills you can climb to get a view of the city spread out below. You’ll have to climb a man-made structure, but don’t worry because there are plenty.

A’dam Lookout

A’dam Lookout is a purpose-built tower with breathtaking panoramic views of the city. While you’re there, try Europe’s highest swing, which is an amazing 20 floors up and carries you out over the side of the building!

We’ve already talked about this brilliant museum. This is just a reminder that the views from its roof are some of the best in town!

Oude Kerk Tower

Oude Kerk means old church in Dutch. This old church is located in the heart of the red-light district and it has amazing views over that part of the city and beyond. It’s definitely worth the climb. This is definitely not one to do if you’re not too mobile as the stairway is narrow and there are step ladders involved.

The top deck of our bus

The views from the top-deck of our Amsterdam bus are pretty brilliant, and, unlike the other viewing points here, they’re constantly changing as you move around the city.

De Wallen – the red-light district

bus tours of amsterdam city

Amsterdam has long been a city famed for its tolerant attitude to things that might not be tolerated elsewhere. Chief among them prostitution and drugs. For years, tourists have been attracted to the city by this liberal attitude and despite attempts by the city to change that, De Wallen is still one of the city’s main draws. Even for those who have no interest in exploiting its relaxed attitude!

If you want to explore the streets of De Wallen, you can do so in safety. Many think that it’s a dangerous area, and maybe it once was, but today it’s not.

There’s a lot more to it than its most famous attractions. You’ll find load to do here, from the Amsterdam version of Madame Tussauds, Body Worlds, the previously mentioned Oude Kirk, and some lovely canals to stroll along.

One gem worth visiting is the Our Lord In The Attic Museum, which is an old hidden church in the attic of a 17 th -century canal house. It’s a remnant from the days when Catholics had to worship in secret in the Netherlands.

Vintage Vibes: Thrifting Treasures in Amsterdam

If you’re a fan of vintage fashion, Amsterdam is a treasure trove of great gear. Explore the city’s many vintage shops, where you can discover one-of-a-kind pieces from bygone eras and add a touch of retro flair to your wardrobe. Here are a few shops that should be on your radar:

  • Rumors: This curated vintage haven boasts an impressive collection of high-quality designer pieces from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Review: The Big Bus Tour in New York City

I absolutely loved the Big Bus Tour in New York City. It’s the best way to go sightseeing in an open-top, hop-on hop-off, top-rated tour and explore the best New York attractions !

If this is your first-time visiting New York and you want to see all the top landmarks, this double-decker tour bus will take you there.

The Big Bus Tour in New York

You may be wondering if a hop-on hop-off bus is worth it. Absolutely, yes!

If you consider the time and money spent on transportation costs, waiting for buses, navigating the subway (which can be confusing for visitors), and getting from one point of interest to another, it is worth every dollar!

I had a great visit to New York City on Big Bus Tour. My goal was to show the city to some friends from Italy who were visiting the US for the first time.

Since we only had about two days to spend together, the hop-on hop-off was undoubtedly the best decision.

From our experience, we’ll answer commonly asked questions about the Hop-on Hop-off bus while visiting New York City.

Google Reviews

Why take the big bus tour in new york.

While seeing New York from the open-top deck of the double-decker bus, the city unfolded block by block with panoramic views from every angle.

As we traveled through the streets, the sights were unobstructed and new visual backdrops were revealed.

The towering skyscrapers and colorful billboards filled the air with excitement and as the cityscape continued to change, it gave a grand feeling to the experience.

I especially enjoyed being able to relax from the upper deck of the bus while taking in the energy of city scenes.

Because I also live in a large city, the rhythm felt familiar from the elevated vantage point .

Car horns were honking, crowds traversed through the streets and there was an endless hum of activity.

Best of all, the tour gave me the chance to interact with other travelers who were seeing New York while waiting for the tour to began.

We struck up conversations and exchanged stories, insights, and recommendations during our stay in New York.

How Much is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The regular price of an adult and child ticket is $60.00 and $50.00, respectively. However, you can use the link below for discounted fares.

How Long is the Big Bus Tour in New York

The round-trip New York City Big Bus Tour takes about two hours from start to finish.

The bus is the perfect solution for visitors worldwide because they offer pre-recorded audio narratives and translations in five languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English.

Are There Toilets on the Big Bus

No. Unlike charter buses, you won’t travel long between stops. So the best thing to do is exit at a stop, find a public restroom, see an attraction, if desired, and then catch the next bus.

If you are not sure where to find one, ask a Big Bus guide on the street. The driver may also have some suggestions.

Charter buses come equipped with a bathroom because travel is expected to be for a much longer period.

How Does the Big Bus Tour Work in New York City

The tour offers three options for purchase — 1-day, 2-day, and 3-day.

When you decide the number of days of your tour and purchase your ticket, the clock starts when your ticket is scanned while boarding the bus for the first time.

The ticket is good for 24, 48, or 72 hours. So, if you have a 1-day ticket and board the bus at 11:00 AM on Monday, it can still be used until 11:00 AM on Tuesday.

We found a ton of touring options for sightseeing in New York.

Aside from the extended period, the 2 and 3-day tickets also offer discounted bike rentals.

The buses run every 20 minutes on average. However, the first stop at the M&M store can be a long wait during peak season.

You can exit or board at any of the designated stops as much as you want.

The only exclusion is the one-loop tour Night Tour which is a panoramic non-stop tour.

Where to Catch the Big Bus Tour in New York City

During the tour, the buses only stop at designated stops.

Your ticket is good for as long as the buses operate during the day and it may be used on both the red and blue routes.

When you board, make sure you get a hop-on hop-off New York bus route map!

Big Bus NYC Red Route

The red route sightseeing tour covers lower Manhattan and you’ll see many landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Wall Street, the Chrysler Building, and General Grant’s Tomb.

You can catch a tour at any one of the following bus stops and you can get your tickets in advance of boarding.

1 – M&M’s World – 7th Ave & W 48th St (Outside M&M World & Majestic Deli)

2 – Times Square East – W 42nd St & Broadway (at Knickerbocker Hotel)

3 – Empire State Building / Korea Town – 5th Ave & W 32nd St (at CVS Pharmacy)

4 – Flatiron District – 5th Ave & W 23rd St (at Eisenberg’s Sandwich Shop)

5 – SoHo – Broadway and Spring Street (at Nike Store)

6 – Chinatown / Little Italy – 100 Lafayette Street (near the corner at Walker St)

7 – Brooklyn Bridge – Park Row & Beekman St (across from 33 Park Row)

8 – Wall Street / Charging Bull – Broadway & Wall St (Southwest corner near Rector St)

9 – Statue of Liberty / Battery Park – State St and Bridge St (at Subway Entrance)

10 – Circle Line Sightseeing – 12th Ave & 40th St (opposite Pier 81)

11 – Times Square North – 7th Ave & W 50th St (at Majestic Deli)

Big Bus NYC Blue Route

The blue route covers upper Manhattan, and half of the ride is mostly views of Central Park. You can switch to the blue route at red stop #2.

We recommend changing routes at stop #11 (the Majestic Deli) where you can take a break and have a nice lunch.

12 – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – 5th Ave & E 83rd St (near 83rd St)

13 – Central Park Zoo – 5th Ave & E 66th St (opposite 845 5th Ave)

14 – Columbus Circle – Central Park & Columbus Circle (SW corner of Central Park)

Tips and Things to Know Before You Go

The bus has two levels, the upper level offers panoramic views of the city but be careful of overhanging traffic lights and trees. Don’t stand while the bus is in motion.

  • After you find a seat, check the audio to confirm it is working.
  • Snacks are allowed. Bring a frozen bottle of water and protein bites to keep you energized.
  • When on the upper deck, cover up with sunscreen to protect your skin on hot sunny days.
  • If you are a family of 3 or more, take seats across from one another so you’ll have views and photos from both sides of the bus.

Tourists were lined up at stop #1 at least an hour before departure and the line extended the entire block and rounded the corner.

We decided to see other points of interest and returned around 11:00 AM.

The wait to board the bus was about 20 minutes. It was a relaxing ride and there we saw so much!

By the time we reached stop #9, we were pumped and ready to exit the bus so that we could explore the city! And you probably will be too.

Here’s the secret sauce that really made the experience memorable. Exit at stop #9 and take a FREE ferry to Staten Island.

To see the Statue of Liberty, stand on the left side of the boat. When returning, stand on the right side.

Final Thoughts About the Big Bus Tour in New York City

Overall, the tour was a pleasant way to see New York city and when you are on the upper deck, you hardly notice the traffic.

Some other advantages of seeing the city by bus include:

  • Avoiding parking hassles. I mean, who actually drives in New York?!
  • Photo opportunities. With the open-top or large windows, you have excellent photo opportunities as you pass by iconic landmarks and cityscapes.
  • Comprehensive sightseeing of major landmarks and attractions within two hours.
  • You can get local recommendations from the guides who operate the bus.

I usually opt for a hop-on hop-off bus when I am short on time or to get my bearings in the city before deciding what to do.

Either way, when you take the tour bus, it doesn’t appear impossible to take a bite out of the Big Apple.

Happy Travels!

New York Today

A royal visit to the city that was once called new amsterdam.

Among other stops in New York, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands will tour an exhibit focused on 400 years of Dutch history.

James Barron

By James Barron

Good morning. It’s Thursday. We’ll get details of a royal visit to New York City. We’ll also find out what Mayor Eric Adams said when asked about pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands walking next to each other. The king is wearing a suit, while the queen is wearing a bright red outfit with a matching floral headpiece.

They did not arrive in the United States the way many couples do — the husband, who has a pilot’s license, was in the cockpit of the Boeing 737 jet, serving as the co-pilot for at least part of the flight from Europe.

Still, on their outing in New York City today, the pair, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, will do what many tourists do. They will stroll along the High Line and go to a museum.

But they said the trip had a purpose — emphasizing ties between the Netherlands and the United States and strengthening economic connections. The most recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis showed that the Netherlands ranked third in direct investment in the United States with $617.1 billion at the end of 2022, after Japan ($712 billion) and the United Kingdom ($663.4 billion).

So the royals’ itinerary includes a midday event at the Brooklyn Navy Yard about business startups and ways to accelerate clean technology .

They will also go on a tour of East Flatbush, Brooklyn, where they will “discuss urban challenges such as climate action, affordable housing and societal resilience” with community leaders, according to the Dutch government. Their day will end with a reception at Hudson Yards in Manhattan; the king and Mayor Eric Adams are expected to speak there.

The trip is not the royals’ first visit to New York. Willem-Alexander and Máxima visited in 2009, when he was the crown prince (he ascended to the throne in 2013). Máxima had lived in New York from 1996 to 2000 when she was an investment banker.

They arrived in New York City after two days in Georgia and one in Albany. (Willem-Alexander flew the plane there, too, according to a spokeswoman for the Netherlands Embassy in Washington.) Willem-Alexander’s focus was on jobs during a session at a nanotechnology center in Albany that describes itself as the largest nonprofit semiconductor research-and-development facility in the country . Willem-Alexander was all business in his brief remarks there, saying that trade with the Netherlands accounted for 57,000 jobs in New York State.

Gov. Kathy Hochul said that “New York became what it is because of the Dutch” and mentioned names like Brooklyn and the New York Knicks that have Dutch roots. She also referred to the Schuyler mansion in Albany, where Elizabeth Schuyler grew up. Of the three daughters in the household — familiar to theatergoers who’ve seen “Hamilton” — she was the one who married the man whose portrait is on the $10 bill.

Later, as the king looked on, Hochul and a Dutch trade official signed a memorandum of understanding that confirmed shared interests in advancing semiconductor research and development.

Today, after their stops in Brooklyn, Willem-Alexander and Máxima will walk through an exhibition commemorating 400 years of Dutch history in New York at the New-York Historical Society on the Upper West Side. The exhibition includes a 1626 letter that describes the “purchase” of Manhattan from Native Americans for 60 guilders, which later was said to have been $24.

The exhibition also includes a letter from three chiefs of contemporary Lenape communities whose ancestors lived in Manhattan when the Dutch arrived with hopes of establishing a Dutch republic in North America. And the exhibition displays a map of New Amsterdam, called the Castello Plan, that was painted around 1660, long before Peter Stuyvesant surrendered to the British.

So what do you say when a king and queen cross the threshold?

“I’m going to invite them to have a look at Dutch history, beginning at the very beginning,” said Louise Mirrer, the president and chief executive of the historical society .

“What’s eye-opening is to see evidence that the Dutch actually did believe they had purchased Manhattan from the Lenape,” she said. “The letter really says something about how cultures can understand each other incorrectly, or misunderstand one another. Obviously, history bore out how the misunderstanding was disadvantageous to the Lenape.”

Enjoy a sunny day in the mid-80s. The evening should be mostly clear, with temperatures in the low 70s.

Adams praised a reporter’s ‘summer body’

Mayor Eric Adams told a journalist who asked him about pro-Palestinian demonstrations that it looked as if he had been working out and complimented the reporter’s “summer body.”

One of the mayor’s top female advisers, sitting nearby at City Hall, shook her head in disbelief. Another deputy mayor looked down and covered her eyes.

My colleague Emma G. Fitzsimmons writes that the remark was not unusual for Adams. He often comments on people’s physical appearance or clothing. And while he speaks proudly about the number of top cabinet officials who are women, he has also made the point to note that they lead while wearing Christian Louboutin shoes, with their signature red-soled heels.

This was not the first time that Adams had singled out the reporter he said had a “summer body” — Pete Cuddihy, an intern at Fox News. At a news conference in March, when Cuddihy asked about the city’s housing crisis, the mayor said, “I like that turtleneck — people don’t wear turtlenecks anymore.”

A spokeswoman for Fox News sent a statement from Cuddihy that said: “Speaking only about my interaction on June 11 with Mayor Adams, I felt his comments towards me were friendly, and I did not feel uncomfortable.”

Adams is far from the only notable elected official who has been criticized for making comments that seem inappropriate. President Biden has made remarks about people’s physical appearance; Donald Trump often mocks people’s physical appearance and was found liable in a civil trial for sexually abusing the writer E. Jean Carroll. And the Justice Department found that Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, subjected female employees to a “sexually hostile work environment,” made unwanted comments and gave preferential treatment to some employees based on their physical appearance.

Adams, a Democrat, was himself accused in a lawsuit of sexually assaulting a colleague in 1993 when he was a police officer.

Fabien Levy, a deputy mayor and Adams’s chief spokesman, said the mayor “would never intentionally make someone feel uncomfortable. He’s a warm and engaging person who talks to New Yorkers the way any regular New Yorker speaks to one another.”

METROPOLITAN diary

Dear Diary:

Anyone who lived or worked in Midtown Manhattan in the 1970s and ’80s knew Gene Palma as the guy who “played” Sixth Avenue. He even had a cameo in “Taxi Driver.”

With shoe-polish blackened hair and heavy makeup, Gene would play his drum on the sidewalk. Sometimes, he would bang his sticks on newspaper vending machines, or sit on the curb and play the street itself.

In the winter, to avoid the frigid north wind that swept down the avenues, he would move onto the side streets. Once, when I saw him on 52nd Street, I asked why he moved onto the side streets every winter.

“The sound’s better,” he said.

Take Back Title IX Summer 2024 bus tour visits Utah capitol

Tour is traveling the country to challenge new title ix regulations and ‘protect women’s sports’.

bus tours of amsterdam city

By Jackson Payne

The Independent Women’s Forum brought its Take Back Title IX bus tour to Salt Lake City Tuesday as part of the Our Bodies, Our Sports movement, which claims to be the “largest and most ideologically diverse women’s movement of our time.”

More than 70 local residents came to the Utah capitol to welcome and mingle with the bus of activists involved with the movement, which aims to “protect women’s sports, (and) call attention to the Biden administration’s Title IX regulations and the devastating impact the new rules will have on women and the growing threat to women’s equal athletic opportunity, privacy, and safety,” the tour’s website reads.

The tour features a number of former NCAA athletes and coaches who are sharing their experiences in athletics to raise support for increased protection for women’s sports under Title IX, including enforcing single-sex spaces such as bathrooms and locker rooms.

“Every single story of the ladies featured on this tour is unique, important and must be heard,” said Brianna Howard, the Independent Women’s Forum’s external relations manager who currently manages the bus tour. “They’re making change and it’s important that their voices be heard.”

Among the women on the tour is Kim Russell, who was terminated from her position as head coach of the Oberlin College women’s lacrosse program in 2023 after a lengthy period of conflict with the school following her public comments regarding transgender individuals competing in college athletics.

“We are erasing all women to make a male who identifies as a woman feel comfortable,” Russell told the Deseret News. “We are putting all women in harm’s way in order to make one male who feels uncomfortable feel comfortable. That is not kind. There are only two sexes, and if we don’t come back to that basic truth, women will be erased.

“We are here specifically to bring the truth. When people say this isn’t about inclusion, it is. We are about the inclusion of women. We are about the inclusion of every human being. The truth is, there are two sexes, and kindness is telling the truth.”

The Independent Women’s Forum does not view the issues driving the bus tour as political, citing support received from members all across the political spectrum.

“Defending common sense and sex-based rights for women should not be political, and historically has not been as political as it is now, but we have folks who just do not understand what a woman is or refuse to define what a woman is, and it’s why we’re here,” Howard said. “We shouldn’t have to have this tour, but unfortunately we’re doing this so women from future generations and current generations have the protections they need under the law.”

The bus tour began May 29 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and continued on to Las Vegas Wednesday, wrapping up June 28 in Nashville. The Salt Lake City event was officially hosted by the Utah Eagle Forum.
