Amouage Journey Man: Journey Down a Different Road

2022 marked the emergence of an incredible new release from Amouage called Royal Tobacco, which I’ve already reviewed previously . It is easily one of my most favorite tobacco-dominant creations. But Amouage also has another phenomenal tobacco fragrance that seems to be less frequently mentioned, unfortunately so at that.

This is Journey Man, jointly composed by Pierre Negrin and Alberto Morillas, and released in 2014 alongside Journey Woman. When compared to Royal Tobacco, Journey seems quite simple, yet is always a joy to wear. If you love spicy woody perfumes, then read on.

The hallmark ingredient of Journey in the opening is Sichuan pepper, it is very fiery, spicy, yet has some distinct citric hues that really combine well with the sparkling bergamot in the initial phase. It is almost pungent at first, being so strong and prominent, but cardamom and neroli quickly arrive on the scene to smooth and temper the volatile fire residing within this red bottle. The cardamom, although being a spice, really has a suave smoothness to it and the neroli imparts a bit of honeyed sweetness to balance out the peppery tones. Gradually, puffs of smokey incense ascend through the flaming texture, lifting aloft decadent whiffs of rich tobacco reinforced with the balsamic facets of juniper berries.

Slowly the fiery pepper fades away as the tobacco rises to the fore, it is rich, full-bodied, yet dry in texture, in contrast to the more humid, caramel-like colors of the tobacco in Royal Tobacco. Here and there I detect hints of leather, albeit a leather accord more like a soft, supple suede.

In the dry down, Journey Man becomes considerably woodier thanks to cypriol oil, and creamier due to the presence of tonka bean. The leather is more pronounced in the dry down as well, but this is by no means a leather perfume. Here, the overall experience is of a smooth, refined, yet dry tobacco imbued with remnants of incense smoke and pepper, all wrapped in a sophisticated, discreet suit of suede and cardamon, and warmed ever so slightly by some creamy amber tones and musk.

Although I love tobacco as an ingredient in perfumery, cardamom is also a weak spot of mine, and it shines so wonderfully throughout the life of Journey Man. This fragrance, having a decidedly masculine profile, really hits the spot during the spring and autumn months, but I can see it working all year round. Longevity is excellent, as per the quality of Amouage offerings. If you’re intrigued by Amouage’s “hidden” tobacco gem, please get your nose on Journey Man .

I’ve been enjoying my Amouage journey so far (see what I did there), and Journey Man is no different.

It opens with a bright, orangey citrus from the neroli. The second thing that hit me was what I perceived to be cinnamon and nutmeg, but going by the notes it must be the cardamom. There’s also a punchy (szechuan) pepper that’s very prominent. A slight woody scent is hidden in the mix. What stood out most for me however, was a pleasant, really smooth, warm, animalic touch, which is not something I usually enjoy. It’s listed as musk or as ambrox. Now, I’m not too familiar with animalic notes, but it reminded me of the (perhaps fully synthetic) civet in the opening of Parfums de Marly’s Layton Exclusif, albeit much softer in Journey Man. It might just be musk, with added bitterness and almost sourness coming from the tobacco leaves.

Which brings me to the tobacco. As often, I try to get some notes down without looking them up to train my nose, and for once, I was able to nail an Amouage pretty well. The tobacco didn’t come to me however, but after knowing it’s in here, it’s really obvious. Leather is part of the composition as well, but it’s not as evident as some of the other notes, especially the strong pepper. The drydown is less exciting, with everything becoming milder and the tonka base coming through.

From everything I’ve tried so far, Journey Man is closest to Interlude Man. That one was way too much for me though and Journey Man is a much lighter variant, so I would actually prefer this. Don’t mistake lighter for weak performance though, the longevity was impressive. Maybe this is a good gateway drug to step up to Interlude Man later on.

Hello, i've read that Amouage Journey man is similar to male powerhouses from the 80's. Has anynone who has it or has tested it found any similarity?  

No, I find it to have a lot of the spicy, incensy elements of the Amouage DNA. Nothing retro to my nose. Very nice fragrannce when I'm in the mood for it.

Would have to agree with Nick. However when I'm in the mood for a Journey, it always reminds me of Rien Intense Incense by Etat Libre d`Orange. When I sample those 2 side by side, I always go for the Intense Incense.

Most of the powerhouses from 80s smell dated from today's standards, while Journey smells ultra hip. Hot sichuan pepper, spiced fruits and dry tobacco - in Journey all this is presented in a very modern, somewhat unique way. It is fresh and bright fragrance - and very dark fragrance at the same time. Imagine the hologram of two figures, light and dark, dancing tango together on stage, it conveys same kind of feel. Comparing this to 80s powerhouses is like comparing vintage black and white TV set to Ultra-HD plasma panel  

Nice spiced fragrance. Owned a bottle, but didn't reach for it often. I eventually traded it. Still a nice fragrance.  

Like others have said; there is nothing retro about Journey. It is very modern. It does have Amouage longevity so maybe some equate longevity with classic mens scents?  

It's big on tobacco, which wasn't infrequent back then, and it's certainly powerful and long lasting, so it is a little powerhouse of its own. But as others were saying, the structure is different, powerhouses of the 80s tended to have a chypre, fougere, or musky base, this one is more in modern woody territory. cacio  

When having tried it, did not call to mind of any of the 80s powerhouses.

I think I can see your comparisons - tobacco and (a little) coumarin. I was thinking more about the much mossier or muskier stuff like Kouros, Antaeus, Aramis, etc. cacio

I just happen to be sporting Honour Man on one arm and Journey Man on the other today. Been trying all day to figure out the differences to see which one I like more. They are VERY similar to me, but I think the drydown of Honour is better. In the case of it or either smelling like the 80's...no, not to me at all.

I recived Journey man today and what a great scent... Very strong, bitter with peppery start, then it becomes boozy with a note of luxury cognac. After that tobacco and woody notes. I must say to my nose it really smells like a fragrance from 1985, it's also for a more mature guy, very luxurious.

I don't think Journey man is a mature scent at all. I've worn it clubbing. It definitely works for that in the fall/winter.
