Northern Vietnam Tours – Your journey to the legendary landscapes and indigenous people!

Once upon a time in the kingdom of Lạc Việt (an ethnic group living in the northern Vietnam), a legend has it that Lạc Long Quân – a water Lord. He had the body of a dragon and possessed magical powers and super good health. In the mountainous area lived a beautiful fairy named Âu Cơ – a goddess of mountains. One day Âu Cơ was visiting legendary country of Lac Viet, she met, felt in love with and got married to Lạc Long Quân. When the time came, Âu Cơ laid a sac of 100 eggs from which hatched one hundred sons. These children grew up fast into healthy adults.

The hundred children of Lạc Long Quân and Âu Cơ divided themselves into two groups. Fifty of them followed their mother to the mountains and fifty the others followed their father to the water areas. They promised that if either group encountered misfortune, the other must help. They developed into a rich and diversified area called northern Vietnam today with wonderful mountains and rivers. They became the ancestors of the Vietnamese people.

The North Vietnam has all the amazing places to discover from the unique vibrant Hanoi city, Majestic Rock formation of Halong Bay, Amazing scenic hillside rice paddies of Sapa to Incredible Karst mountains in Hoa Lu Tam Coc. Northern Vietnam Travel Advice

1. best time to travel  .

Northern Vietnam weather between October and April is characterized by cool and occasional light rain, making it quite dry whilst May to September is hot and humid with high rainfall. Therefore, the best time to travel to North of Vietnam such as Hanoi, Sapa, Halong Bay and other provinces nearby is from October to April as the sky is clear and the humidity is not high. Travelling up north to Sapa in the late September and early October gives you the chance to see the yellow terraced rice paddy field ready for harvest, making it the best time of the year.

2. Best Destinations in North Vietnam

Halong Bay: If you join in the tours in the North of Vietnam, Halong Bay Tours should be number one on the top list. Listed in the 7 New World Wonder, Halong Bay is one of the best World Natural Heritage sites. Each year Halong Bay attracts millions of people coming here to admire the beauty of nature. Halong Bay 2 day 1 night or Halong Bay 3 day 2 night cruise tour will be the best trip for you ever in your life depending how many days you have for your holiday. Halong Bay Tours will is the best destination you must visit in the North of Vietnam.

Sapa: Sapa itself is very beautiful place in North Vietnam. If you have time do not miss that. You may spend 2 or 3 days for your Sapa trip. Millions of people visit Sapa because of not only the beauty of the terrace field, nice weather in summer but the colourful culture of the ethnic minority of local people living there. Now that is easy to travel to Sapa by train, bus or a private car/van. Visiting Sapa, clients can do an easy trekking the villages around like Lao Chai, Tavan, Cat Cat; visit the Ham Rong Mount or Fansipan peak for an overview of Sapa and mountain around.

Puluong: Puluong was the hot destination in North Vietnam from beginning 2017. Not like Sapa, Puluong is a new destination so most of the things are still very authentic. Staying in a homestay will give you the best experience and learn more about the local life.

Ninh Binh: Tam Coc is a good option for the tour in North Vietnam . You may do 1-day tour combing Tam Coc with Hoa Lu – the ancient capital of Vietnam. Enjoy the boat trip in Tam Coc will give you the best experience for the popular water transportation in the past. Trang An is similar to Tam Coc and you may do that instead of Tam Coc. If you have seen the Skull Island – King Kong film please note that this is the place where that movie was filmed.

Departure Date and confirming of Northern Vietnam Tours?

With a tailor-made holiday to Northern Vietnam, you can depart any dates on requests. However, it is advisable to book your tours in advance (from 2 to 5 months) for the availability of services.

Tour Experience:

1. enjoying gorgeous scenery  .

Travelling away from the hustle and bustle of the capital city Hanoi, towards the countryside is definitely well-worth as the lush greenery, beautiful mountains and rice paddies await you. You may take the leisurely cycle on the road alongside the green paddies in Mai Chau or hop aboard a rowboat in Tam Coc to float along the stunning rice terraces surrounded by limestone cliffs and rock formations. In addition to that, joining in our North Vietnam itinerary  gives you the chance to enjoy the view of green forests in Sapa with incredible scenery or in Ha Giang Province where you will be amazed by the spectacular vantage point from Ma Pi Leng Pass.

2. Cruising Northern Vietnam

One of the highlights of your Northern Vietnam Tours is cruising experience in Ha Long Bay which is One of New Seven Wonders of Nature. Halong Bay day boat trips or overnight cruises( Halong bay 2 day 1 night cruise , Halong Bay 3 day 2 night cruise ) are a spectacular way to experience the ravishing beauty of Halong Bay. If you prefer the less crowded area, you may opt to take the boat trip in the less popular neighbor, Bai Tu Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay. Not very popular but should be mentioned is cruising in beautiful Ba Be Lake. Experiencing cruising tours in Ba Be Lake is not only to relax and enjoy wonderful landscape of Ba Be Lake, but also to enrich the soul.

3. Hiking in the mountainous areas

One of the well-known destination to participate in hiking activities is Sapa . Waking up early to prepare to start and get ready to discover the beautiful scenery on foot. To be more adventurous,  why do not you try to climb Fansipan Mountain – the highest mountain in Vietnam ? Hiking on this mountain is a real challenge, even to the persons of decent fitness, so the proper hiking equipment (sturdy shoes, layers) and a local tour guide is in need. Another incredible destination to join in outdoor activities like hiking is Ha Giang Province. Trekking in Ha Giang offers you many various levels from the short walks in the major towns, including Thong Nguyen, Quan Ba, Dong Van to the half-day hikes to different hill tribes villages nearby, not to mention longer treks in the area of Hoang Su Phi, Xin Man, Viet Quang.

4. Meeting distinct ethnic minority people

Vietnam is the land of 54 ethnic groups and you can find many of ethnic minorities in Northern Vietnam . For instance, Mai Chau is a kind of melting pot, serving as the home to seven ethnic groups: Hmong, Zao, Muong, Hoa, Viet, White Thai, and Tay. The tranquil Mai Chau, the remote province of Ha Giang or the mountainous town of Sapa are the "must visit" ones if you are looking to see how diverse Vietnam is and to get an authentic view of many cultures.

Like many others we were clients of Vietnam Discovery on holiday in Vietnam in April. We had 4 wonderful days in Hanoi, Halong Bay, then Hoi An. The staff of Vietnam Discovery – Jessica and the whole team backup was so great and very supportive. I have traveled with VD many times and always been impressed by their knowledgeable help when planning a trip and the quality of planned holiday we have had.

What people love about Northern Vietnam Tours from Hanoi

The tour was amazing!! I had Lorna as a guide, she is lovely. She is caring and made sure everyone on the tour was comfortable. Despite being really nice, she could also tell us everything about Vietnam!!
Did a lot in a few days. Our main tour guide was very helpful, always got back to us in a timely manner to answer questions and concerns. Would use again. Good accommodations near must see areas.
Danny was very organised and conscientious throughout my whole tour! It was great to have different guides in the various places we visited as they had a lot of personal knowledge from growing up in the area. Cha, our guide in Sapa, was from a local tribe & taught me some of their language, and Guang, our Hanoi guide, was incredibly knowledgeable, interesting and entertaining. My dietary requirements were taken care of in each place, which made things a lot easier too. A wonderful tour overall which gives you a great introduction to the best places in Northern Vietnam!

We wanted to write and commend one of your tour guides - Nina, who has spent to days with us in Bangkok, staying along the river. Nina is the most professi...

As Vietnam fans out above Hanoi towards the Chinese and Lao borders, it attains its maximum width of 600km, most of it a mountainous buffer zone wrapped around the Red River Delta. This wild, remote region contains some of Vietnam’s most awe-inspiring scenery, sparsely populated by a fascinating mosaic of ethnic minorities. Most visitors gravitate to the northwest, where the country’s highest mountain range and its tallest peak, Mount Fan Si Pan, rise abruptly from the Red River Valley. Within its shadow lies Sa Pa , a former French hill station and the base for trekking through superb scenery to isolated minority hamlets. To the east of the Red River, Bac Ha’s major draw are the Flower Hmong, whose markets are great fun. These two towns – and the historic battlefield of Dien Bien Phu, the site of the Viet Minh’s decisive victory over French forces in 1954 – are the most visited places in the north. From Dien Bien Phu, it’s worth considering the scenic route back to Hanoi, passing though Son La, with its forbidding penitentiary, and Mai Chau, with its gorgeous scenery. Plan your trip with our Northern Vietnam Travel Guide.

Best time to visit Northern Vietnam

Getting around northern vietnam, top cultural attractions in northern vietnam, best hotels in northern vietnam, what to see in northern vietnam, the northwest loop, the northeast loop, travel ideas for vietnam, created by local experts.

Vietnam Culinary Discovery

10 days  / from 2150 USD

Vietnam Culinary Discovery

Vietnamese cuisine can be divided into three categories, each pertaining to a specific region, namely the North, Centre and South. You will visit all of these on this culinary tour of Vietnam. Awaken all of your senses to the wonderful sights, sounds and aromas of this fascinating country.

Very Vietnam

16 days  / from 2150 USD

Very Vietnam

Vietnam is full of surprises, seamlessly mixing both ancient and modern. See rice paddies, traditional villages, markets, temples and pagodas. Discover romantic cities, cruise around mystical Halong Bay, laze on pristine beaches and get out and about in exuberant Ho Chi Minh City.

Cultural Saigon

4 days  / from 550 USD

Cultural Saigon

Southern Vietnam is home to modern Ho Chi Minh City, a vibrant southern capital full of historic attraction and old Saigonese charm. Soak up some café culture, enjoy authentic street food, and get a taste of the city’s thriving markets.

The best time to visit the northern mountains is from September to November or from March to May, when the weather is fairly settled with dry sunny days and clear cold nights. Winters can be decidedly chilly, especially in the northeast where night frosts are not uncommon from December to February, but the compensation is daybreak mists and breathtaking sunrise views high above valleys filled with early-morning lakes of cloud. The rainy season lasts from May to September, peaking in July and August, when heavy downpours wash out bridges, turn unsealed roads into quagmires and throw in the occasional landslide for good measure. Peak season for foreign tourists is from September to November, while the rainy summer months of July and August are when Hanoians head up to the mountains to escape the stifling heat of the delta.

Whether you travel by public transport or with your own vehicle, you need to allow around six days’ actual travelling time to cover the northwestern region. Touring the entire northeast also requires at least six days including Ha Giang Province, but more if you want to spend time on Ba Be Lake, or visit Pac Bo Cave or Ban Gioc Waterfall near Cao Bang. Combining the northwest and northeast loops gives you an unforgettable two weeks of exploration, but bear in mind that travelling these roads is unpredictable, becoming downright hazardous during the rains, and it’s advisable to allow some flexibility in your programme. If you’ve got only limited time, Sa Pa, Mai Chau and Ba Be National Park make rewarding two- or three-day excursions out of Hanoi , either by public transport or hired vehicle. The other alternative is to join an organized tour with one of Hanoi’s tour agencies.

We’ve selected six of the best things to see and do from our Northern Vietnam Travel Guide.

Mount Fan Si Pan

Ride the record-breaking cable car from Sa Pa and stand on top of Mount Fan Si Pan, Vietnam’s highest mountain.

Bac Ha Sunday market

Have your camera ready for the Sunday market in Bac Ha, which is frequented by the Flower Hmong – perhaps the most flamboyant dressers in the country.

Thai minority villages

Sleep in a Thai stilthouse in Mai Chau, cycle or trek through the rice fields in the valley and watch traditional dance performances.

Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark

Vietnam’s first geopark, recognized by UNESCO for its unique geological significance, harbours some of the country’s most spectacular scenery.

Glide around in a boat on the lake’s glassy waters or hike to minority villages near the shore, and spend a night in a welcoming homestay.

Ban Gioc Falls

Take a ride amid karst landscapes from Cao Bang to the Chinese border to reach these attractive falls, an image of which adorns the walls of cafés throughout the country.

One of the town’s longest-standing mini-hotels, Cat Cat has a building on each side of the road and a huge variety of rooms, some with private terraces and fantastic panoramic views across to Mount Fan Si Pan. The rooftop restaurant is an added attraction.

This hotel just south of the lake is giving stiff competition to the Victoria with its sumptuous rooms and suites, superb spa, excellent buffet breakfast and competitive rates.

Rooms here are rather plain but have two-way a/c (hot and cold), and some have balconies. The big advantage of staying here is that Dong, who runs the place, will help you plan a fun trip. Advance booking necessary at weekends.

Dien Bien Phu

Dien Bien Phu’s most extravagant accommodation, complete with swan-shaped pedal boats on a lake, lies a kilometre out of town in a peaceful setting. The rooms are good and the location is superb.

Mai Chau Valley

Enjoying similar idyllic views to the Mai Chau Ecolodge but with smaller rooms at a fraction of the price, Valley View offers a sensible compromise between comfort and luxury. Its eight rooms are clean and well furnished, and feature knock-out views from the small balconies. The staff are also helpful (but not pushy) and the restaurant serves a good range of tasty food.

Though it’s a few kilometres from the town centre, this is by far Ha Giang’s best place to rest your head, with rustic, thatched cabins nestled beneath towering trees amid landscaped gardens. Go for a river-view room and soak up the wonderful scenery. They also provide motorbike and kayak rental, and are able to arrange tours of Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark.

This is just as you might dream a homestay to be: a beautiful wooden stilted house set amid green fields and away from the hustle and bustle. Outside, there are clean showers and toilets.

The little-travelled provinces of Ha Giang and Cao Bang also deserve attention, especially the stunning scenery and ethnic minorities in the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark, which occupies over 2300 square kilometres of Ha Giang province. Cao Bang’s attractions include the pretty Ban Gioc Falls and Hang Pac Bo, where Ho Chi Minh plotted his country’s liberation. The northeast region also features Ba Be National Park, where Vietnam’s largest natural lake nestles amid forested limestone crags and impenetrable jungle.

Not surprisingly, infrastructure throughout the northern mountains is poor: facilities tend to be thin on the ground, and some roads are in terrible condition. However, this area is becoming increasingly popular with tourists as Hanoi’s tour agents organize new tours and independent travellers venture into uncharted terrain by jeep or motorbike. New homestays are also opening all the time, especially in Ha Giang province.

Cities to Visit in Northern Vietnam

The obvious, most popular city to visit in Northern Vietnam would be Hanoi , the capital. With roughly 7,600 million inhabitants Hanoi is a hub of life made up of colonial buildings and ancient pagodas. Famous for its well-made silk and handicrafts, it is a must-see when in the country. Plastic chairs and tables crowd the small streets at night, surrounded by hungry locals and tourists enjoying delicious cuisine from the food stalls. One of the most ancient capitals of the world with heavy influences from China, France and Russia, Hanoi is a city with much to offer. Motorcycle tours are thriving in the city, with short trips to beautiful landscapes within spitting distance and local tour guides who show tourists hidden gems that might otherwise go unnoticed by visitors.

Around 175km from Hanoi, sits Ha Long Bay . A much smaller city located on the Northern coast of Vietnam. Famous for its emerald waters and hundreds of towering rainforest islands dotted around the bay, it is no wonder that it has been deemed a natural wonder of the world. Popular for activities such as scuba diving, rock climbing and kayaking it is a place many flock too to get active whilst enjoying the idealistic scenery. It is also a common theme to partake in boat tours around the bay, where often tourists will venture to cave formations and hidden temples.

Most people who visit Northern Vietnam stop off in Sa Pa. The town provides a great base for trekking and visiting some of the region’s minority villages. The town can make for a much-needed breath of fresh air after the humidity and chaos of Hanoi. There are also great views of Mount Fan Si Pan and the surrounding mountains, especially from the cable car. Discover more about Sa Pa .

The small town of Bac Ha, nestling in a high valley 40km northeast of Highway 7, makes a popular day-excursion from Sa Pa. There’s little to see in the town itself except on Sunday, when villagers of the Tay, Dao, Nung, Giay and above all Flower Hmong ethnic minorities trek in for the lively market. At 1200m above sea level compared to Sa Pa’s 1600m, Bac Ha is less spectacularly beautiful, although it’s still scenic, with cone-shaped mountains bobbing up out of the mist, and it’s also much less touristy, giving out a workaday sense of a bustling agricultural community rather than an alpine resort.

Bac Ha provides a stark contrast to Sa Pa , with little in the way of tourist facilities beyond a few guesthouses. As Sa Pa becomes saturated with tourists seeking out a more authentic experience, so Bac Ha has attempted to emulate Sa Pa’s success by developing its own trekking business focused around the nearby rural markets. For the moment, however, it lacks sufficient infrastructure – which, in many ways, is the key to its charm.

If you’re travelling independently it’s worth spending a whole weekend in Bac Ha, in order to take in the rustic and colourful market at Can Cau on Saturday. Bac Ha also makes a good base for trips out to the surrounding Flower Hmong villages of Ban Pho and Coc Ly.

The Sunday market

The Sunday market, the town’s one big attraction, gradually fills up from 8 to 10am, and from then till lunchtime it’s a jostling mass of colour, mostly provided by the stunningly dressed Flower Hmong women looking for additional adornments to their costume. The scene is filled out with a sizeable livestock market, meat and vegetable sellers, wine sellers and vendors of farming implements. The town returns to a dusty shadow of its former self by 5pm when the ethnic tribes return to their outlying villages.

Hoang A Tuong Palace

At the northern end of town, on the left along the main road, you’ll find the remarkable folly of Hoang A Tuong, formerly known as Vua Meo, or Cat King House. Two storeys of pure wedding cake surround a courtyard built in 1924 by the French as a palace for a Hmong leader, Vuong Chiz Sinh, whom they had installed as the local "king" (Meo, or "Cat" in Vietnamese, is a disparaging term formerly applied by Vietnamese and French to the Hmong). The building is now a tourist information office, with a few displays of local ethnic dress and a shop selling hilltribe gear.

Vietnam’s most mountainous provinces lie immediately west of the Red River Valley, dominated by the country’s highest range, Hoang Lien Son. Right on the border where the Red River enters Vietnam sits Lao Cai Town, a major crossing point into China and gateway to the former hill station of Sa Pa and nearby Bac Ha, both now firmly on the tourist map for their colourful minority groups and weekly markets. From Sa Pa a road loops west across the immense flank of Fan Si Pan, the country’s tallest peak, to join the Song Da (Black River) Valley running south, through the old French garrison towns of Muong Lay (formerly Lai Chau) and Son La, via a series of dramatic passes to the industrial town of Hoa Binh on the edge of the northern delta. The only sight as such is the historic battlefield of Dien Bien Phu, close to the Laos border, but it’s the scenery that makes the diversion worthwhile. Throughout the region, sweeping views and mountain grandeur contrast with ribbons of intensively cultivated valleys, and here more than anywhere else in Vietnam the ethnic minorities have retained their traditional dress, architecture and languages. After Sa Pa, the most popular tourist destination in these mountains is Mai Chau, an attractive area inhabited by the White Thai minority, within easy reach of Hanoi.

South of Muong Lay the road splits: Highway 6 takes off southeast to Tuan Giao and is the shortest route to Son La; Highway 12 ploughs on south for more than 100km (about 3–4hr), making slow progress at first but then zipping through the second 50km, to the heart-shaped valley of Dien Bien Phu, scene of General Giap’s triumph in a battle that signalled the end of French Indochina. Though the town’s trickle of tourists tend to be French history buffs, it’s starting to become more popular as a base for trips to local minority villages: the valley’s population is predominantly Thai (53 percent), while the Viet are concentrated in the urban area. With the recent opening of the border to foreigners, it’s also being used as an alternative gateway to Laos.

Dien Bien Phu Victory Museum

On the right-hand side as you head south out of town, the museum is set back slightly from the road. The displays of weaponry include American-made guns of World War II vintage captured from French troops. Alongside them languish Viet Minh guns, also American-made but newer: these were booty from the Korean War which came via China into Vietnam, to be dragged up the battlefield’s encircling hills. Familiar photos of the war-torn valley become more interesting in context, as does the scale model where a video describes the unfolding catastrophe – the message is perfectly clear, even in Vietnamese. To the left of the main museum is a small room displaying outfits of the ethnic minorities that live in the region.

Viet Minh Cemetery

Directly opposite the museum, some of the fallen heroes are buried under grey marble headstones marked only with a red and gold star. In 1993 an imposing imperial gateway and white-marble wall of names was added in time for the fortieth anniversary of the battle. The outside of this wall features bas-reliefs in concrete of battle scenes.

A small hill overlooking the cemetery, known as Hill A1 to the Vietnamese and as Eliane 2 to French defenders, was the scene of particularly bitter fighting before it was eventually overrun towards the end of the battle. You can inspect a reconstructed bunker on the summit and various memorials, including the grave of a Viet Minh hero who gave his life while disabling the French tank standing next to him, and you also get a panorama over the now peaceful, agricultural valley.

The Battle of Dien Bien Phu

More than fifty years on, the Battle of Dien Bien Phu remains one of the most significant military conflicts of the twentieth century, with its importance in Vietnam’s struggle for independence commemorated in nearly every town by a street named in honour of that famous victory.

De Castries’ bunker

There’s little to see at the last battle site, a reconstruction of de Castries’ bunker, located on a dusty country road across the river a couple of kilometres from central Dien Bien Phu; Captured tanks, anti-aircraft guns and other weaponry rust away in the surrounding fields. Carry on past the bunker and you’ll come to a concrete enclosure with a memorial to "Those who died here for France".

Son La’s welcoming, low-key charm is enhanced by its valley-edge setting, and it merits more than the usual overnight stop. If time allows, there’s enough of interest to occupy a few days, taking in the old French prison and a nearby cave, as well as making forays to nearby minority villages on foot or by motorbike.

Certain minority villages stage events for tour groups, such as traditional Thai dancing or supping the local home brew, a sweet wine made of glutinous rice; it’s drunk from a communal earthenware container using bamboo straws, and hence named ruou can, or stem alcohol. The major part of Son La lies off the highway, straggling for little more than a kilometre along the west bank of the Nam La River.

The French prison

Son La’s principal tourist sight is the French prison, which occupies a wooded promontory above To Hieu and offers good views over town. The two turn-offs from the highway are both marked with chunky stylized signs suggesting incarceration; walk uphill to find the prison gates and an arched entrance, still announcing "Pénitencier", leading into the main compound. This region was a hotbed of anti-French resistance, and a list of political prisoners interred here reads like a roll call of famous revolutionaries – among them Le Duan and Truong Chinh, veteran Party members who both went on to become general secretary. Local hero To Hieu was also imprisoned for seditionary crimes but he died from malaria while in captivity in 1944. Most of the buildings lie in ruins, destroyed by a French bombing raid in 1952, but a few have been reconstructed, including the two-storey kitchen block ( bep ), beneath which are seven punishment cells. Political prisoners were often incarcerated in brutal conditions: the two larger cells (then windowless) held up to five people shackled by the ankles. Behind the kitchens, don’t miss the well-presented collection of prison memorabilia. Enter the second arched gate and upstairs in the building on your right you’ll find an informative display about the dozen or so minorities who inhabit the area, including costumes, handicrafts, jewellery and photos.

Que Lam Ngu Che Cave

The cave most convenient to Son La is Que Lam Ngu Che Cave, which is situated just north of the town centre and has a small shrine inside surrounded by strange formations in the rock. A five hundred-year-old poem written by King Le Thai Tong carved into the stone remains visible today on the outside of the cave. You can go there alone – just look for the sign 150m as you head north out of town, or a guide from the Trade Union Hotel will take you for a small fee.

An interesting destination for a day’s trek or visit by motorbike is Ban Mong, a Black Thai village six scenic kilometres along a luxuriant valley south of Son La. The houses of this village are solid, wooden structures surrounded by gardens of fruit trees rather than vegetables. The women of the village usually wear their hair piled up high on their head and secured with a head-dress, on top of which they often wear a precariously-perched crash helmet. The dress of the Black Thai women is particularly striking – especially the brightly embroidered headscarves that they drape over their long hair piled up in huge buns. Their tight-fitting blouses with rows of silver buttons, often in the shape of butterflies, are also distinctive. In colder weather, many wear a green, sleeveless sweater over the blouse, or a modern jacket in pink, blue, green or maroon.

On to Mai Chau valley

From Son La Highway 6 climbs east, passing Yen Chau – a town famed for its fruit – and some very pretty Black Thai villages on the right after about 80km, particularly La Ken, which can be visited by crossing swaying suspension bridges over the river. With your own transport, you could make a detour about 20km west over rolling hills to the Chi Day Cave, a popular pilgrimage site for Vietnamese; look for a right turn about 36km south of Son La. The main road from Son La climbs onto a thousand-metre-high plateau where the cool climate favours tea and coffee cultivation, mulberry to feed the voracious worms of Vietnam’s silk industry and herds of dairy cattle, initially imported from Holland, to quench Hanoi’s thirst for milk, yoghurt and ice cream. Just less than 120km out of Son La, the sprawling market town of Moc Chau provides a convenient place for a break. For the next 4km heading towards Hanoi , the road is dotted with stalls selling local milk products such as three kinds of flavoured milk, thick home-made yoghurt and blocks of condensed milk (which they advertise as chocolate when cocoa is added), as well as green tea. The rigid lines of tea bushes that border the road round Moc Chau create curious patterns, and though there are few side roads, this is a region in which some might want to linger. Most, however, head on down Highway 6, through valleys where the Hmong live in distinctive houses built on the ground under long, low roofs, and surrounded by fruit orchards, to Mai Chau, which lies up a side valley south of Highway 6.

The minority villages of the Mai Chau Valley, inhabited mainly by White Thai, are close enough to Hanoi (135km) to make this a popular destination, particularly at weekends when it’s often swamped with large groups of students. The valley itself, however, is still largely unspoilt, a peaceful scene of pancake-flat rice fields trimmed with jagged mountains.

Mai Chau is the valley’s main settlement – a friendly, quiet place that has a bustling morning market frequented by minority people who trek in to haggle over buffalo meat, star fruit, sacks of tea or groundnuts.

The provinces of northeast Vietnam, looping eastwards from Ha Giang to Lang Son, lack the grandeur of their counterparts west of the Red River Valley, with the notable exception of the area round Dong Van and Meo Vac. In general the peaks here are lower and the views smaller-scale and of an altogether softer quality; there are also less minority folk wearing traditional dress. Getting to see everything is not as straightforward as in the northwest either, though the upgrading of the road between Meo Vac and Cao Bang means it’s now possible to visit the fabulous landscapes of Ha Giang Province, as well as Ba Be Lake and the region around Cao Bang, without backtracking.

Highlights of the northeast are its rural landscapes, from traditional scenes of villages engulfed in forest to dramatic limestone country, typified by pockets of cultivation squeezed among rugged outcrops whose lower slopes are wrinkled with terraces. However, population densities are still low, leaving huge forest reserves and high areas of wild, open land inhabited by ethnic minorities practising swidden farming. While many have adopted a Vietnamese way of life, in more remote parts the minorities remain culturally distinct – particularly evident when local markets, their dates traditionally set by the lunar calendar, are in full swing.

Ha Giang is the capital of the north’s most remote and least-visited province, where Vietnam’s border juts into China and almost reaches the Tropic of Cancer. Until the early 1990s, this region was the scene of fierce fighting between Vietnam and China, and it is still considered a "sensitive area", though its inhabitants nowadays are peaceful and welcoming. It is a sizeable town, and though its buildings are of no great architectural merit, its setting is very impressive, hemmed in by the imposing Mo Neo and Cam mountains. The ochre waters of the Lo River carve southward through the centre of town, and traffic is thick on the bridges that connect the west and east districts.

The town itself has a few attractions, but the main reason for coming is to head on to Meo Vac and Dong Van, both set in valleys surrounded by forbidding peaks and connected by a hair-raising road with spectacular views. The trip from Ha Giang to Dong Van, then on to Cao Bang via Bao Loc, is about 300km and takes at least two (more often three) full days of driving along narrow, bumpy roads, which may become impassable during the rainy season. This border area is home to several minority groups, including the White Hmong and the Lo Lo, the latter having only a few thousand members; most towns along the route, including Dong Van and Meo Vac, have a Sunday market attended by villagers from the surrounding valleys, where you might just be the only foreigner.

The town of Ha Giang straddles the Lo River, with two bridges connecting the older part on the east bank and the newer part on the west bank.

Ha Giang market

Located in a purpose-built hall just northeast of the northern bridge, Ha Giang’s market is a frenzy of activity in the early morning when members of minority groups can often be seen. If you plan to go to Dong Van, however, you’re likely to see more authentic markets along the way.

Ha Giang museum

The Ha Giang museum, located just west of the northern bridge, is well worth a visit to get a preview of the outfits of the many different minority groups who inhabit the region, as well as to see artefacts such as bronze drums and ancient axe-heads that have been unearthed by digs in the region. Archaeological evidence shows that there has been a settlement here for tens of thousands of years, and the region seemingly flourished during the Bronze Age judging by the number of beautifully designed drums that have been found.

Ba Be National Park

Designated as Vietnam’s eighth national park in 1992 and covering an area of about one hundred square kilometres, Ba Be National Park is a region of astounding beauty, from the lush vegetation mirrored in the lake’s still waters to towering limestone pinnacles that reach over 1500m. The main attractions for visitors are boat trips to visit caves, waterfalls and minority villages, with the added bonus of seeing at least a few of the 220 animal, 417 plant and 49 fish species recorded here. Bears, tigers and one of Vietnam’s rarest and most endangered primates, the Tonkin snub-nosed langur ( Rhinopithecus avunculus ), live in a few isolated communities on the fringes of the park, but nearer the lake there’s a good chance of spotting the more common macaque monkeys, herons and garrulous, colourful flocks of parrots. Few people are around to disturb the wildlife and outside the months of July and August, when Hanoians take their holidays, you’ll usually find only a handful of tourists. What puts some people off Ba Be is difficulty of access by public transport, but if you join a tour or hire your own transport in Hanoi it becomes easier to justify, especially when combined with a visit to a minority market. Even then, though, a two-night stay is sufficient for most people.

Vietnam’s largest natural lake, Ho Ba Be forms the core of the delightful Ba Be National Park, a feast of limestone and tropical forest. Enclosed by steep, densely wooded slopes breaking out here and there into white limestone cliffs, the lake is 7km long, up to 30m deep and a kilometre wide in parts. A few islands decorate the surface.

Ba Be Itineraries

The Ba Be itinerary usually begins with a boat trip along the Nang River to Hang Puong, where the waters have tunnelled a three-hundred-metre-long, bat-filled cave through a mountain. From here they go on to the Dau Dang Waterfall, a stretch of beautiful but treacherous rapids. Take care if you walk on the slippery rocks around the falls as there has been at least one tourist fatality here. Next up is a visit to a Tay village on the lakeside, and on longer trips an overnight stay in a stilthouse. A road around the south end of the lake has made Pac Ngoi less of an isolated Tay community than it used to be, but several other villages in the area, such as Buoc Luom, Ban Vang and Bo Lu, can accommodate visitors too. Few Tay wear traditional dress these days, and you’re most likely to see it at a minority show at the National Park Guest House.

Cao Bang lies approximately halfway along the route from Ha Giang to Lang Son, and has enough appeal to merit a stopover. The journey from Ha Giang along Highway 34, via Bao Lac, takes the better part of a day, passing through small villages and excellent scenery. Few travellers venture this far north, but those who do usually make the pilgrimage out to Pac Bo Cave, where Ho Chi Minh lived on his return to Vietnam in 1941, and to Ban Gioc Falls, Vietnam’s highest waterfall, right on the border with China. The province is home to several ethnic minorities, notably the Dao, Nung and Tay who still maintain their traditional way of life in the more remote uplands.

The town itself is a likeable place: its centre may be dusty and noisy, but its riverside setting, with dense clumps of bamboo backed by sugar-loaf mountains helps to blur the edges. The town is built on the southwestern bank of the Bang Giang River, on a spur of land formed by the confluence with the Hien River. Highway 3 drops steeply down from the hills and enters town from the west, crossing a bridge onto a tree-lined avenue of self-important edifices, including the People’s Committee, theatre, bank and post office, before turning right along the river. The narrow, shady park on top of the low hill in the centre of town is worth a wander, and the statue of Uncle Ho is a reminder of the fact that this region was vital to the thrust for independence that he led.

Southeast to Lang Son

At Cao Bang you join Highway 4, an ambitious road that was originally part of a French military network linking the isolated garrisons right across northern Vietnam’s empty mountain country. This road is more subject than many others in the north to falling into disrepair, and the 140km journey to Lang Son takes about four hours, depending on conditions. Beyond Dong Khe, a nondescript town roughly 40km out of Cao Bang, the virtually traffic-free road climbs through a gorge of sheer limestone cliffs before cresting the dramatic Dong Khe Pass. In 1950 this pass was the scene of a daring ambush in which the Viet Minh gained their first major victory over the French Expeditionary Force. In the ensuing panic, forts all along the border were abandoned, an estimated six thousand French troops were killed or captured, and the Viet Minh netted 950 machine guns, eight thousand rifles and a few hundred trucks.

That Khe lies exactly halfway between Cao Bang and Lang Son, and beyond here the road winds through Na Sam, an attractive town snuggled beneath a dramatic setting of outcrops. The villages in this area are inhabited by Nung and Tay; their bamboo rafts and huge wooden waterwheels, which form part of sophisticated irrigation works, grace the river that weaves along beside the road. Unfortunately this rural idyll comes to an abrupt end, as the speedy Highway 1 from Dong Dang brings you hurtling into Lang Son.

Cu Chi Tunnels

Reunification Palace

Explore Vietnam’s Recent History

Today we will take you to experience one of Vietnam’s most famous attractions, the Cu Chi Tunnels! Our day starts with a hotel pickup after breakfast, then we’ll hit the road early to beat the crowds.

After a pleasant drive, we’ll arrive at the tunnels where you’ll learn all about their important role in the Viet Cong resistance and how they were used as hiding spots, communication avenues, and supply routes as well as hospitals and living quarters. You’ll have the chance to go underground and experience the tunnels for yourself! This tour offers a fascinating and informative insight into the lives of the Viet Cong, with plenty to see and learn. A scenic drive back to HCMC allows us to enjoy a delicious lunch of traditional southern Vietnamese cuisine in a local restaurant.

After lunch and a recharge, we’ll be ready to kick off the afternoon with a visit to the War Remnants Museum where we’ll learn about Vietnam’s past struggles and resistance through two historic wars. The next stop will be the historical Reunification Palace: a beautiful, important, and perfectly preserved building. Viewing the Reunification Palace is like going back in time and experiencing first-hand the important role it played during the Vietnamese War.

Heading back to the city centre, we’ll see the beautiful architecture remaining from French colonial times, including the Notre Dame Cathedral, Opera House, and City Hall. To end the day on a high note, we’ll ascend to the famous Rex Hotel rooftop bar and drink in the views, as well as some cocktails!

Get out of the City and into the Delta!

After breakfast, we’ll pick you up at your hotel, get you comfortably seated in our private transport, then set off for today’s adventure to Cai Be! The drive will take about three hours and follows alongside the wonderful Mekong Delta so we can learn all about the course of the river and how it travels from its headwaters in the snowy mountains of Tibet. Gaze out at the spectacular scenery as we drive through this wonderfully fertile region and capture glimpses of local life.

Once we arrive at Cai Be, we’ll board our private sampan (a traditional, motorised boat) to begin our unforgettable cruise along the Mekong River. First, we’ll experience a small floating market. This is a great chance to experience traditional trading away from the tourist-focused markets of the city. Expect to be dazzled by an array of colours, smells, and sounds. Keep your camera at hand to snap some beautiful shots!

After the floating market, we’ll change to rowboats and venture into smaller, more secluded canals of the delta to observe the daily lives of the locals. Our dryland destination will be Tan Phong Island, where a group of local singers will greet us with a performance of traditional music from Southwest Vietnam. Then we’ll hop on our bikes and enjoy a cycle tour of the island, visiting local families along the way to learn more about their way of life and their unbelievable resourcefulness. We’ll also have the opportunity to sample some of their Mekong delicacies for lunch including freshly made spring rolls, fried pumpkin flower, and beautifully braised pork soaked in coconut juice.

After our special Mekong lunch, we’ll transfer back to our boat to see the handicraft of local merchants preparing coconut candy and pop-rice. Our last stop before heading back to Ho Chi Minh City is the stunning Cao Dai temple where we will learn about the peaceful Cao Dai religion and admire this temple’s ornate design and bold use of colour.

A short domestic flight will take you from HCMC to Da Nang where a local guide will be waiting for you upon arrival. Private transport will take you to the ancient city of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It will only take about 40 minutes to get to Hoi An from the airport. From there, we’ll drop you off at your hotel and leave you to get settled in.

We’ll set a time for the walking tour of the peaceful Old Town, which is pedestrianized and an absolute joy to walk around. It’s impossible to take more than a few steps without seeing ancient buildings and temples full of character from Hoi An’s colourful past. A former port city with a melting pot of influences from China, Japan, and France, Hoi An is truly a beautiful and unique place, perfectly preserved and yet full of new life! After a hearty breakfast, your guide will arrive at your hotel with first-rate bikes for today’s tour. We’ll get comfortable on our bikes and then set off through the streets for Tra Que Herbal Village, located about 3km from the Old Quarter. The route is easy to navigate and follows a nice flat path so you can take advantage of all the sights you’ll see along the way.

The herbal village is famous for its fertile lowland soils, which produce the fragrant herbs used in Vietnamese cooking including sweet basil, peppermint, and cilantro- all lovingly cultivated by hand. We’ll meet with locals and have the opportunity to get involved in the daily tasks essential to keeping this special place flourishing. Here you can take a selfie with a water buffalo and even try your hand at the art of lantern-making. Phew!

After breakfast we’ll set off in our private transport for Hue; the former seat of the Nguyen Dynasty Emperors and up until 1945, Vietnam’s capital city. Tombs, Pagodas & Dragon Boats!

Today will be a full-day tour so we can see all the best Hue has to offer, starting with Thanh Toan Bridge. This hidden gem, located off the tourist track in a small village, is characterized by a rare squared timber arch, ancient ceramics, and calligraphy inscriptions. It may have been built centuries ago, but its unique beauty remains apparent. We’ll also visit some locals including the inspiring Ms Thuy who specializes in making Vietnam’s world-famous conical hats.

Next up is the tomb of King Tu Duc, the most popular and impressive of all the royal mausoleums. It houses courtyards, pavilions, temples, and chambers. Your tour guide will tell you all about its fascinating history and the king’s life of imperial luxury, from his 104 wives to the unfortunate ending for his 200 burial servants!

Just before lunch, we’ll visit Bunker Hill which overlooks the Perfume River and boasts amazing panoramic views. The area served as a great military vantage point by providing secret observation posts for the surrounding territory, many bunkers still remain so you’ll have the chance to get up close and investigate them.

We’ll have lunch and recharge our batteries at a serene nunnery pagoda and then head off for our next destination, Tiger Arena. This ancient colosseum was where tigers and elephants would fight to the death in the name of royal entertainment.

The final leg of our tour today takes us to the iconic seven-storey Thien Mu Pagoda, the unofficial symbol of Hue city. From here we’ll board a classic dragon boat and cruise down the Perfume River back towards the city where you’ll be picked up and transferred back to your hotel.

See What Our Guests are Saying

Nice experience, very customer-oriented company fast and easy booking, very fast reaction. Mr. Bien a well-prepared guide and enthusiastic. You should try this experience.

JonnoMelbourne

I now refer my friends, family and colleagues, as well as book all of my tours, accommodation and flights with Maika because I feel very lucky to have finally found an organisation in Asia that gives me the confidence to do so.

The tour was very well organized, and the guide spoke very good English. We got to see and experience so many things: Besides visiting a pagoda and Buddha statue, we also went on a boat ride (with a stop to enjoy a coconut drink) and visited local businesses producing rice paper, conical hats and mats. We had fresh fruit and tea for a snack and Pho soup for lunch which was delicious! We had such a good day and would highly recommend this tour!

We went on this tour, two families of four, with children aged 9-12 years old. We were really happy with it and highly recommend. Lin was our guide and she was fantastic, would really do a trip with her again. It was nice to do this privately and easy to adjust with Lin if needed. Maika helped us book the accommodation in Can Tho which we really appreciated. Would highly recommend and for sure do again.

PaulSoltheran

You did a great job looking after all of our family of 7. The kids enjoyed all the tours and especially the Mekong cruise …as did we……because the kids were so happy we got to enjoy some time to ourselves too. I would recommend Maika Tours if your thinking of visiting Vietnam!

  • Things to do in North Vietnam

When planning a visit to Vietnam, many wonders: North, Central or South? While the South boasts the cosmopolitan Ho Chi Minh City and lush Mekong Delta, and Central Vietnam has many cultural and coastal charms, the North has a magic all of its own. With its fascinating history, epic scenery and seasonal variations, you could take months to explore it all. Here are the top attractions you won’t want to miss…

Appreciate the history of Hanoi

The country’s capital has so much to offer, it was named ‘Asia’s Leading City Break Destination’ for 2022 by the World Travel Awards.

Start your trip here to get a feel for the country’s culture and history. Begin by seeing some of the main attractions, including the Temple of Literature, the President Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, and the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long.

Then stroll the Old Quarter, with its ancient shopping streets, French colonial architecture, souvenirs and street food. Regional dishes include bun cha (rice vermicelli noodles with barbequed pork) − which former US President Barack Obama and the late chef Anthony Bourdain famously ate together on the travel show Parts Unknown. Walk around one of Hanoi’s 20 lakes to see how locals enjoy downtime. There’s a long history of traditional arts in and around Hanoi, so check out the nearby craft villages if that piques your interest.

Marvel at the ethereal beauty of Ninh Binh

If a fantasy movie were made in Vietnam, it would most certainly be shot in Ninh Binh, a stunning destination about two hours from Hanoi. Stay in Tam Coc (meaning ‘three caves’), which forms part of the Trang An Scenic Complex UNESCO World Heritage Site.

North Vietnam - Ninh Binh

What’s special about this region? With the spectacular limestone karsts that create such dramatic scenery. In between these are rice fields, water-lily ponds and meandering waterways that create pretty scenes, you’ll feel humbled.

While some visit for a day trip from Hanoi, it’s best to enjoy this countryside slowly. Rent a bicycle or scooter, and be sure to take a boat trip, trek to lookout points, explore caves and visit pagodas. The top lookout point is the Lying Dragon peak atop Mua Cave Mountain. There are hundreds of uneven steps to climb, so avoid going in the heat of the day.

You can take a boat tour with a few routes from Tam Coc or Trang An. A unique aspect of these boat tours is that the drivers frequently use their feet, not their hands, to the oar, and they make it look (and feel) effortless. Besides caves, the main stop-off point is the Bich Dong Pagoda for gorgeous photographs. Nature lovers should visit Ninh Binh’s Cuc Phuong National Park, the country’s largest reserve.

Admire the epic scenery of the rice fields

Perhaps nothing is more synonymous with Vietnam than its beautiful rice fields, which reflect gorgeous shades of green when the rice is growing and turn a stunning yellow hue nearer harvest.

To see terraces of such fields on majestic mountain terrain, head to SaPa, the ‘town of clouds’ in the remote northwest. These fields are maintained by fascinating and friendly ethnic minorities living in tiny hill tribe villages, who welcome visitors into their charmingly rustic homestays. This is an authentic travel memory you’ll never forget.

Another way to savour the splendour of rice-field scenes is by paragliding over them. Every September, there’s a paragliding festival at Mu Cang Chai, about 300km from Hanoi – a bucket-list experience of note.

North Vietnam - Mu Cang Chai

Cruise Halong Bay

The emerald waters of Halong Bay (the ‘bay of descending dragons’) attract tourists for good reasons. Within them are over 1,000 islands and islets, surrounded by dramatic limestone hills that formed millions of years ago.

This UNESCO World Heritage site full of forests, caves and bays is easily explored via the plethora of cruise tours on offer - whether you’re on a backpacker’s budget or ready to splurge on this bucket-list experience. Stay on board for a night or two to truly make the most of the setting, whether by snorkelling, visiting caves or floating fishing villages, or kayaking to teeny-tiny beaches for a swim. For an aerial view that will take your break away, book a ride on a seaplane that will show you the extent of Halong’s network of forest-covered peaks and shimmering bays.

On land, Halong City is worth a short stop. Swim at one of the beaches, try out local seafood, or take a ride on the cable car or Ferris wheel of the Sun World Ha Long Complex.

Explore Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island, Halong’s largest island set within Lan Ha Bay, is popular with locals and foreigners alike. It includes beaches, resorts, adventure activities, and a large national park.

Active types can do many things here, from rock climbing and hiking to kayaking and spelunking. Trung Trang Cave, located in Trung Trang Valley, represents more than 150 large and small caves in Cat Ba National Park, is home to many altars and bats. Hikers can enjoy the trails within the UNESCO biosphere reserve that is the Cat Ba National Park. It includes dense forests, mangroves and wetlands, and the Ngu Lam Peak viewpoint.

For a more leisurely stay, head to one of the island’s three main beaches and then try one of the popular floating seafood restaurants along the promenade. As with Halong Bay, there are also various boat tours. Some of these take you through Cai Beo, one of the famous oldest fishing village in Vietnam.

Do the Ha Giang Loop

To truly experience the rugged beauty of rural Vietnam, many say that riding the Ha Giang loop is the ultimate experience. With its winding roads and mountainous terrain, it’s best done on a three-to-five-day motorcycle trip. Not a confident driver? Experienced drivers will take you on the back of their vehicle.

What people most appreciate are the awe-inspiring vistas from viewpoints and refreshment stop-offs along the route, usually between Ha Giang City and Du Gia. Highlights include the Twin Hills, Lung Khuy Cave, Lung Tam Village, Ma Pi Leng Pass, and Tu San Canyon. For a market experience like no other, there’s the Sunday Meo Vac market. This is a proper village market, bustling with villagers and livestock.

Buddhist 'Phenomenon' Ends North-south Vietnam Walk

  • Order Reprints
  • Print Article

A Buddhist devotee who amassed a huge following in authoritarian Vietnam as he tried to travel the length of the country on foot has "voluntarily stopped walking", authorities said Monday.

Vietnam's communist authorities are often wary of big, spontaneous gatherings that could potentially trigger social unrest.

Thich Minh Tue began his walk from north to south several weeks ago, with Facebookers, TikTokers and YouTubers recording his journey and livestreaming for an audience of hundreds of thousands.

Hundreds of residents and Buddhist followers gathered to greet him in person at every stage of the walk, giving him food and offering him shelter for the night.

State media dubbed him the "Thich Minh Tue phenomenon".

In a statement issued Monday, the Vietnam Government's Committee for Religious Affairs said Thich Minh Tue had "voluntarily stopped walking and begging for alms".

According to the statement, Thich Minh Tue and his followers disrupted traffic in central Hue province as they passed through, and in the last few days one man died and two women were hospitalised due to heat stroke after joining the crowd.

Authorities met with Thich Minh Tue -- whose official name is Le Anh Tu -- to discuss the incidents late Sunday, prompting his agreement to cease walking, the statement added.

The statement follows another in mid-May which said that "hostile forces have used the 'Thich Minh Tue phenomenon' to oppose the religious policies of our Party and State on social networks", state media reported.

Rights groups say Vietnam restricts religious freedoms, and the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom -- a US government advisory body mandated by Congress -- has designated Vietnam a "country of particular concern".

In its 2024 annual report, it cites the country's "systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom".

Hanoi has rejected the allegations, and the committee for religious affairs said "local governments had always... created conditions for Mr. Le Anh Tu to walk".

With his colourful patchwork robe made from discarded fabric, Thich Minh Tue and his dress has inspired poets, painters and fashion designers in recent weeks.

His alms bowl -- a metal container taken from a rice cooker -- has become a popular social media meme.

Following the end of his journey, reactions were mixed on social media.

One Facebook user, Khuong Saigon, said it was time to "return peace so that he could continue his religious practice alone".

Another, Ngoc Tung, referred to his walks of previous years -- which first began in 2017 -- and questioned why he would suddenly stop voluntarily.

"We the people don't believe this," he said.

Business Wire

SEOUL, South Korea--( BUSINESS WIRE )-- Hansae Co., Ltd. (KRX:105630) (CEOs, Kim Ik-Whan and Kim Kyung), a leading global fashion Original Development Manufacturing (ODM) company, organized the 'Summer Tour of Hansae' program from May 12 to 19. The program invited students from North Carolina State University’s Wilson College of Textiles, to explore textile production sites in Vietnam.

This summer tour program systems from an industry-academia collaboration established between Hansae and Wilson College of Textiles at North Carolina State University in 2019. To recruit participants, Hansae actively engaged at the 2024 Wilson College of Textiles Spring Career Fair held in February. Following a paper screening and video interview process, the company selected the eight finalists.

On May 14th, the eight students began their exploration with a visit to Hansae's headquarters in Seoul before departing for Vietnam. From May 15th to 17th, they immersed themselves in the operations of Hansae's Vietnamese production plant, known for its advanced automation technology.

At C&T VINA, Hansae's fabric subsidiary, the students gained firsthand experience with clothing production technologies, including fabric knitting, dyeing, and printing. They also explored diverse systems like biomass boiler systems and reverse osmosis systems. Since acquiring the Vietnamese dyeing factory C&T VINA in 2013, Hansae established 'COLOR & TOUCH' in 2014, achieving vertical integration encompassing dyeing, processing, fabric brokerage, sewing, and manufacturing.

Afterwards, the students were exposed to an advanced manufacturing environment driven by IT technology at the Hansae Vietnam TG factory. They experienced the clothing production automation system, hanger line system, Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV), and HAMS 2.0, a cutting-edge smart tech system.

The tour concluded at the Hansae HCM office in Ho Chi Minh City, where participants gained valuable insights into Hansae's innovative 3D design capabilities. Established in 2017, the company's virtual design team has pioneered the creation of virtual samples that realistically replicate fabric texture, pattern, and color. This approach reduces waste generation and minimizes the environmental impact compared to traditional sample production methods.

Dr. Andre West, Director of Zeis Textiles Extension at Wilson College of Textiles, who led the Hansae Summer Tour students, commented, "Witnessing K-Fashion's technological prowess at the production site was a truly valuable experience for our students." And the eight Wilson College students expressed their strong desire to join the company, stating, "If Hansae offers internships in the future, we will definitely apply."

Kim Ik-Whan, Vice President of Hansae, said, “We will continue to conduct tours to actively recruit world-class fashion majors and become a truly global fashion tech leader.”

A global fashion ODM company, Hansae operates with 22 subsidiaries and 10 offices in 9 countries, including the US, Vietnam, Indonesia, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. Employing over 50,000 people worldwide, Hansae manufactures and delivers apparel for renowned brands like Walmart, Target, and GAP.
