7 Tips for a More Powerful Tour Jeté

tour jete full gymnastics

It’s a staple of grand allégro, but tour jeté—also called grand jeté entournant or entrelacé—is not easy. Miami City Ballet School’s Geta Constantinescu shares how she helps her students fly higher.

Prepare with care: “Let’s say you piqué arabesque on the right leg,” says Miami City Ballet School faculty member Geta Constantinescu. As you chassé sideways, “that right leg has to go in back, not in front of the left leg. Many don’t even notice that little mistake!” The left foot is then available as you turn to step forward onto it, going into the tour jeté.

Plié both legs generously as you brush the leg through first position , so you don’t jump from just one. “Use the floor to help elevate yourself.”

Be direct: Instead of brushing to grand battement devant, Constantinescu often sees dancers go through a rond de jambe or “something not very clear,” she says. “What is front, where is the toe going when you toss it in the air?” She suggests practicing the brush en avant in tendu and adagio combinations, to “imprint” that pathway.

Let the arms assist: Coordinate your port de bras with your grand battement. The arms go up through high fifth as you take off. They begin to open, Constantinescu says, “right at the top of the jump.”

Practice your takeoff and landing at the barre with this combination: Grand battement devant on demi-point, turning towards the barre as you close fifth to finish on the other side with the opposite leg in arabesque plié.

Think “forward”: As the legs switch, think of the arabesque in the air as a “demi-penché” to create space for a greater split. “Feel connected from the lower belly to the heart center as the leg goes back,” says Constantinescu. “That lifting of the sternum supports the line of the demi-penché.”

Imagine you’re “kicking a ball” with the front leg as the back leg scissors into arabesque, like in a big sissone ouvert. “This will incorporate that quality of split in the air.”

Considering a Gap Year After High School? Here’s What You Need to Know.

Four teenage ballerinas wearing black leotards, black ballet skirts and pink tights, stand at the barre and do a cambré back in a dance studio with pink walls.

3 Dancers Share What They Learned From Training Abroad

A male ballet teacher stands at the front of a dance studio in tendu à la quatrieme devant with his left leg. He wears a gray t-shirt and black track pants. Behind him, seven teenage boys in white t-shirts, black tights and black ballet slippers practice the same move.

Where Are the Boys in Ballet?

A young adult ballet student practices a penché at the barre, lifting her right leg up and extending her right arm in front of her. Her etacher stands close to her near the barre and holds her right foot in her right hand and touches the dancer's right hsoulder with her left. They pose in front of a large floor-to-ceiling window, with a New York City Street seen outside. The dancer wears a black leotard, pink tights and pink pointe shoes, while her teacher wears a lack t-shirt, black yoga pants and black sneakers.

Advanced Leap and Jump Drills

tour jete full gymnastics

I wanted to put together a few videos of some more advanced leaps and jumps – I did a series a while back on leaps and jumps – basically ending with switch leaps. So in this post I’ll start off with switch leaps and other similar leaps and jumps and move on from there.

tour jete full gymnastics

This first video is a great video of LOTS of drills that can be done on Tumbl Trak from Deanna Sigler Grader. A few of my favorites are the seat drop to split jump – the girls REALLY have to drive their back legs hard if they want to get even and the tuck fulls to seat drop. The beauty of doing a tuck full (or straddle/wolf/split) is that it’s very easy to tell if they don’t get all the way around AND it forces them to tuck their hips under. It’s great.

These next series of videos show ways of breaking down switch 1/2s and tour jete 1/2s. First the split 1/2. This is one where a lot of kids get confused about the timing and end up in a straddle in the middle. Breaking it down like this not just for a day but for weeks will really help them develop the muscle memory of the skill.

The same type of break down can be used for the tour jete 1/2 – the girls do a foute, then split jump, then 1/2 turn. The skill is now in three parts. When they get better instead of the foute, they can do tour jete, split jump 1/2. All of this can be done up to panel mats too. As they get good at the tour jete + split 1/2, start speeding it up. When that is fluid, have them do the split 1/2 before landing on the floor. You’d be amazed how breaking things up makes it so much easier.

This next one is a great drill from Chelle Stack really emphasizing the active flex in anything that involves a ring. I think a lot of us assume that naturally flexy kids will ring really well – but if they don’t have the strength and active flex (not just passive) to get their foot above their head it won’t work.

This last video is a flex circuit from Tammy Biggs. As the jumps and leaps get bigger and more complicated both active and passive flex need to get better. If you’re on the look out for ways to improve these Tammy always has some great ones.

This is for USAG DP level 9, Is a tour jeté on floor a B or a C? My daughter claims her coach is saying its worth the same as a switch-half (which I'm almost positivie is a C?), but that doesn't sound right to me. Not that it really matters, since she can't really do a switch-half yet, and its not like I'm going to go all crazy gym mom and text her coach about it. Just curious.

My daughter says it has to be a full to be a C.

A regular tour jeté is a B. A tour jeté half is a C. I think where some of the confusion comes in is that a regular tour jeté has a half turn in it and the half actually goes 360 degrees around. So if she is doing a tour jeté half then that should be worth the same as a switch half.

Common deduction traps, changes for the 2024 college gymnastics season.

tour jete full gymnastics

To prepare for the season, I’m going to go over some of the skills and errors that can be deduction traps for college athletes, as well as some of the deduction changes that will impact the scores this year.

First off, the biggest change is that gymnasts are now required to stand with their legs extended, feet together and arms up (essentially in a solute position) for a full second before they walk off the mat and/or celebrate with their teams. This rule will really help judges see which athletes can and cannot control their landings and make the “college stick” much harder to fudge. Judges have been instructed to count the full second and to take any deductions for steps, adjustments, wobbles or arm circles that the athletes perform before they show the controlled finish. Gymnasts receive a half-tenth deduction for not holding their finishing position. Be prepared to see stricter landing deductions, including the heartbreaking moment when a gymnast does stick their landing with perfect control but in their excitement forgets to hold the salute for the full second and loses a half-tenth.

Another significant change this year is the “squat on landing” deduction. Gymnasts can still receive up to three-tenths for landing in a deep squat, but now gymnasts can land in a squat with their hips parallel to their knees and receive no deduction. Before this was a one-tenth deduction. Although this is not a deduction trap and will help athletes score better (and land safely!), it bears mentioning since it’s a significant change from previous years.

Previous Guidelines vs. New Guidelines

tour jete full gymnastics

Finally, another change has to do with fulfilling the composition requirement for both front/side and backward saltos on floor. In the past, athletes could do a side salto to fulfill the forward salto requirement, but that is no longer the case. Forward and side saltos must take off from two feet to be considered, so athletes who were using this to fulfill that requirement will lose a tenth in composition if they don’t tweak their routines.

In addition to these changes, there are some other skills and combinations that, when done poorly, can turn into major deductions for the athlete.

Front Entry Vaults

There are two traps I see in both the front handspring flipping vaults and the Yurchenko half-on front flipping vaults. Although a tight arch is allowed, many gymnasts use an excessive arch with a shoulder angle to generate power and rotation for the second half of the vault. This usually means the athlete will get a deduction for the arch, head alignment, shoulder angle and often leg separation, which can range from two to four-tenths, depending on the severity. For athletes doing tucked saltos, it is an up-to-three-tenth deduction for tucking the knees before leaving the table.

2024 OLYMPICS: This year's Olympic contenders and qualifiers with college ties

Blind full: If this turn is done too late, it can be an up-to-three-tenth deduction. Gymnasts can also often lose points for having their head out of alignment during the turn. You’ll see gymnasts do this into a double back dismount in order to get bonus and not incur a composition deduction, but if it’s not done well, they can lose more points than they gain.

Double front half-out dismount: If you’re an Oklahoma or Audrey Davis fan, you’re well aware of this potential deduction trap. Gymnasts perform forward double tuck saltos with a slight leg separation for safety, but if the legs are not together during the turn, it makes a very unflattering picture that the judges have a front row seat for and will often deduct.

Beam Full turns: Although simple, these should be done on high relevé and with a controlled finish, which can be difficult for some athletes. Seen as an “easy” skill, it’s also very easy to wobble, ove-turn or step out uncontrolled, all of which are deductions. However, since this is a special requirement, it’s a deduction trap that the athletes will have to continue to live with.

Switch leap half: This is a very difficult leap on beam and for good reason. It’s very common for athletes to not hit a full split, not be parallel to the beam on their split or to have poor posture or arm placement during the leap.

Cat leap/hitch kick connections: These tend to be connected to a switch half or a side aerial for an extra tenth in bonus, but if the leg drops and lifts again or if the connection is too slow, they can incur a rhythm deduction or not receive credit for the connection at all. You also sometimes see these slow connections out of a switch leap, but since that leap moves forward quite a bit more than the cat leap or hitch kick, the athletes tend to move out of it better than the two jumps.

Ring and sheep positions: The guidelines are very clear as to the leg positioning, and it can be very difficult to hit them consistently. Gymnasts either do not bend their back leg enough, they don’t release their head back far enough or they can’t get their back foot to the level of their head. All of these errors can incur deductions, or the skill will be devalued, which could impact the athlete’s start value. On beam, the gymnast completely loses sight of the beam, which makes wobbles very common on the landing. On floor, if the timing is off or their legs are tired, hitting the ring position and landing with grace can be a tall order.

SUPER 16 RECAP: Click for a full list of results from each session

Switch side, straddle full: It is so common for gymnasts to slightly overturn their switch side and then underturn their straddle full. Both of these are deductions. Gymnasts have to have dance bonus to avoid a composition deduction, but for those gymnasts that overturn their switch side, a switch side half (D) to a straddle jump (B) is also a valid option and would likely be very attainable for these athletes.

Tour jete half and full: Similar to the switch side, gymnasts will “cheat” this jump by cheating the first quarter turn on the floor before they take off, which could cause the skill to be devalued or deducted if the judge catches it. For the full, gymnasts commonly under-rotate this turn but will try to step back and lunge out of it to complete the twist. Judges are trained to carefully watch the feet on both floor and beam and if they catch these errors, it can be costly for the gymnast.

Double layouts: With the exception of Trinity Thomas, almost every double layout I’ve watched on floor has some sort of deduction. The most common are leg separation in the air, failure to maintain a stretched body on landing (a.k.a. a pike down) or landing with a low chest. Even greats like Sunisa Lee, Jordan Chiles and Selena Harris all have built-in deductions on this skill, although whether or not the judges catch it or deduct for it is another topic of conversation.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS - MAY 31: Jordan Chiles prepares to compete in the uneven bars during the 2024 Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships at Dickies Arena on May 31, 2024 in Fort Worth, Texas. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

Chiles channels Beyoncé and Pucci. Biles evokes Chanel. In gymnastics, leotards bridge fashion and sport

FORT WORTH, Texas — As Jordan Chiles stood at the end of the vault runway, the lights of Dickies Arena reflected off the 4,400 Swarovski crystals on her leotard, creating sparkles reminiscent of the Eiffel Tower twinkling against the dark backdrop of a Parisian night sky.

She lifted her arms to salute the judges, shimmering with tiny rainbows, and sprinted toward the vault table, becoming a glittering blur of blue, pink, red and green as she flipped and twisted through the air.

Her leotard, the source of the explosion of color and sparkle, was one-of-a-kind, a custom creation inspired by an outfit Beyoncé wore during a Renaissance Tour concert last year. Chiles found a photo of the megastar in a bold Pucci bodysuit and sent it to the designers at gymnastics apparel manufacturer GK Elite to use as a reference point for her competition look for night one of the 2024 U.S. Gymnastics Championships on Friday.

The result was an attention-grabbing blend of checkered patterns in green and orange, pink and blue, and red and white with pink and red stripes across the chest. The sublimated print was covered in crystals that formed a necklace-like triangle to recreate the look of the extravagant body chain Beyoncé wore around her neck and waist.

“It’s gonna look like there’s a battery pack in the leotard. It’s going to be that blingy under the stadium lights,” said Jeanne Diaz, the design director for GK Elite, before this week’s championships.

Indeed it did.

Leotards can capture a personality, convey a style and provide a boost of confidence on the competition floor. For the top gymnasts in the world, months of planning go into designing a custom fit that looks distinctive and withstands the rigors of competition. Only the highest quality crystals are bedazzled into the leotards to ensure they don’t come loose mid-routine, and the garments are made to the athletes’ specific measurements so the fit stays perfect through each flip and twist.

A quartet of medalists from the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 — Chiles, Simone Biles, Sunisa Lee and Jade Carey — sported custom GK creations at nationals Friday, with combined crystal counts totaling well into the 10,000s. Each gymnast worked with GK for months to create a special look.

“A leo is almost like putting on our armor for competition,” said Carey, who won gold in the floor exercise at the Tokyo Games. “I really want to feel powerful and confident because the better I feel, the better I feel like I’m gonna do.”

While U.S. gymnasts will all wear the same uniform at the Paris Olympics, domestic meets like this weekend’s championships allow athletes to express themselves through custom designs.

Sleeveless versions of the leotards are sold as practice wear, marketed through GK’s sponsorships of Biles, Chiles, Carey and Lee. But the creations for them for the mats in Fort Worth, with meticulous, handmade details, are one-of-ones.

Think of a signature basketball shoe. But with the sensibility of haute couture.

“What Simone has with us is our equivalent of a Jordan brand,” said Matt Cowan, chief executive of Elite Sportswear, the parent company of GK. “Simone has her signature collection that is inspired by her performances, her likes, her aesthetic, her innovation. She truly can bring a product that’s catered and representative of her to the community.”

The process to achieve that look-good, feel-good final product is different for each athlete, Diaz, the GK design director, said. Carey and Lee usually request specific colors and leave the design direction up to GK. Chiles sends reference photos. Diaz has collaborated with Biles for so long that she knows the 2016 all-around Olympic champion’s taste.

Biles’ style is “timeless but also unique. High-fashion,” Diaz said. Her fuchsia leotard for last month’s Core Hydration Classic had a criss-cross pattern of crystals on the bodice that evoked the iconic quilted Chanel handbag, while her brown leotard for the second night of U.S. Championships on Sunday will feature gold Swarovski crystals with a high collar to give a royal feel. The design reflects Biles’ position as the 27-year-old, accomplished face of the sport.

“At the beginning of her gymnastics career her leos were really playful, fun,” Diaz said. “Then they got a refinement to them. They’ve culminated now with this really regal look.”

Chiles, who trains alongside Biles at her Texas gym, “has a more edgy flair to her,” Diaz said.

“She has a very expressive personality and that shows through in her leotards that she gravitates toward.”

The final night of the women’s event on Sunday will bring what Diaz called a “showstopper” for Chiles: a white leotard based on a Bronx and Banco bodysuit Beyoncé wore onstage in Las Vegas last August.

The idea behind Beyoncé’s bodysuit was the artist being the diamond at the center of a crown, Natalie De’banco, Bronx and Banco’s founder, said. Five people worked on the garment simultaneously, taking 150 hours to attach each crystal individually.

Chiles was drawn to the eye-catching silhouette of the catsuit, which GK mimicked with mesh-lined cutouts. Her version features 3,086 crystals and a detailed strappy back. But it’s not so easy to dress like Beyoncé.

“It’s heavy!” Chiles said. “It feels like a wedding dress.”

Gymnasts’ performance styles also influence their competition leos, as is the case for Lee and Carey.

“Suni gravitates towards more feminine looks, softer looks so the style lines do have curves to them,” Diaz said. “We tend to lean sportier for (Jade) but still strong looks and still filled with bling.”

GK isn’t the only outfitter of elite gymnasts. Sylvia P, an Australian gymnastics wear brand based in Brisbane, creates custom looks for Shilese Jones, who withdrew from championships due to a shoulder injury but remains a front-runner to make her Olympic debut in Paris. The brand looks to Fashion Week runways, the Met Gala and red carpets to come up with concepts that bring Jones’ personal style out on the competition floor, Sandra Cunningham, Sylvia P’s creative director, said.

Jones, a two-time world champion, cited Zendaya and Beyoncé as her style icons and also looks at figure skating dresses for ideas for jewel placement. As for colors, the 21-year-old prefers a darker palette.

“I stick to the dark purples, blue, red and black. Those are my top favorites,” she said. “I just don’t feel 100 percent confident if I’m wearing something Skittle yellow or bright sun orange. It’s just not completely for me.”

The goal is an elevated look with an elegance Jones carries in her gymnastics. With sparkles, of course. Lots of sparkles.

“I want to feel the sparkliest,” Jones said. “I want to have the most jewels on my leotard, and I want to feel all types of confident.”

Bedazzling is the most time-consuming part of the process. Hundreds of crystals must be placed by hand to fill out a machine-generated motif. The leotard Jones planned to wear Friday, which had around 6,000 stones forming intricate line work down the sleeves, took four hours to fully cover in crystals, Cunningham estimated. Jones’ leotards often feature an extra bit of sparkle as a nod to her father, Sylvester, who died in 2021 after a long battle with kidney disease. She frequently incorporates crystals spelling out “XII. XX. MMXXI.” — the date of her dad’s passing — into her designs and wore the Roman numerals down the sleeve of her leotard at the Core Hydration Classic.

“I wanted to carry him out there with me on the floor, doing the gymnastics with me,” she said. “Having my dad out there, it just means more to me and makes my heart happy going out on the floor.”

Two hours after she debuted her lavish look, Chiles ended Friday by taking the floor to a mix of Beyoncé’s tracks and vocals, connecting her leotard to her routine. Her night wasn’t without blemish — she fell on the final tumbling pass of her routine and landed seventh in the all-around — but with a month until the U.S. Olympic Trials, Chiles and the other gymnasts still have time to hone their skills and prove why they deserve a spot on the five-person team in Paris.

The styles and sparkle they wore on the floor showed they’ve already brought Paris Fashion Week to Fort Worth.

The same type of break down can be used for the tour jete 1/2 - the girls do a foute, then split jump, then 1/2 turn. The skill is now in three parts.
