Day Trip Jersey to Saint Malo

Booked trip prior going to Jersey, easy to do online. Went as foot passengers, boarding the fast ferry was quick and efficient. Allocated seats soon found. Crossing only takes 1.5 hours. Food and drinks available at reasonable cost. The ferry was clean and comfortable. Return journey just as slick. On arrival and departure in Saint Malo it is necessary to use a free bus from ferry to terminal, only a matter of a few hundred metres (for safety reasons). That was a bit of a pain, other than that really good experience.

Having used Condor with no issues for many years we have discovered the new timetables for 2017 are not workable and unfortunately we find ourselves having to use the airlines again. We have always been fans of Condor but this year the timetables are simply Inconvenient, restrictive and when one works, a day wasted hanging around harbours is not satisfactory. Please revert to previous timetables Condor as we would like to stay loyal.

Due to bad weather ferry cancelled no information forthcoming had to travel some distance to ferry terminal , because only recored messages or email telling you it is cancelled . Then told at terminal no ferries available for two days . Never ever go to the channel islands by ferry or you can get stuck , and yes its a little windy just a gut feeling its broken down so blame it on the weather then they are not liable for compensation . Name supplied

Travelling as foot passengers is quick no easy, terminal is functional but no real frills, drinks and snacks available. Getting on the ferry requires some walking and although assistance is available if needed. Ferry itself is clean and tidy with allocated seating and plenty of facilities to entertain you on the short trip to St Malo, bar, restaurant, coffee shop and duty free. Staff all friendly and helpful.

I know this is meant to be about St Malo, but I felt I had to comment about Condor dropping their Summer Sunday sailings to Cherbourg. These sailings seemed always to be full and popular. Now the only (expensive) option is to travel via the channel islands with a transfer and consequent delay. From now on I will switch to DFDS sailing to Dieppe. Also the technical and weather problems that blight Liberation put me off.

Having seen the New Year in in St Malo returned to Jersey by Condor for my flight to London.Whilst it had had a hiccough last week all was well and the smooth crossing and friendly very helpful staff were all one could ask for.

Travel guide to st malo in brittany, france.

Welcome to St Malo

Having been brought up in the Channel Island of Jersey, I almost know the French historic city of St Malo like the back of my hand!

Only an hour by ferry from Jersey, St Malo was the regular place for our school trips when we were young and day-drinking exploits as we got older!

However, it was only on my recent trip back home, when I got to revisit this ancient and impressive once again, that I finally saw its beauty as a stranger would.

Over one thousand years old, this amazing French outpost is steeped in history and heritage, making it both a truly unique and beautiful destination.

Intro to St Malo in Brittany

France, St Malo, Turret

Situated in the gorgeous province of Brittany, St Malo is a port city located in the northwestern area of France.

Historically a walled city dating from the 1 st Century BC, the old city of St Malo is famous for its beautiful ramparts, historic cobbled streets and excellent shellfish restaurants.

The old, walled city has now been joined by a more modern quarter, which most of the locals now live, shop and work.

It’ most famous attraction, the St Malo Aquarium is also located in the new part of the city.

Because of its strategic nautical position, St Malo has a strong maritime focus even to this day.

Fishing and shipping are large industries here, along with tourism, which is complemented by the regular ferry service St Malo provides between France, the Channel Islands of Jersey and Guernsey, and England.

Catching the Ferry to St Malo

It is more than likely you’ll arrive by ferry if you are travelling to St Malo. In many ways, this makes the city a gateway to the UK to and from mainland Europe.

Brittany Ferries are the main company to travel with from England, namely from the city of Portsmouth. They provide both foot passenger and car services, which makes them an excellent choice if you are using St Malo as your landing point to travel deeper into France of Europe.

Bringing your car on the ferry and camping in France can be an excellent way to travel the country on a budget, giving you freedom, independence and flexibility too, so I highly recommend it.

The other St Malo Ferry company is Condor , who also provide foot passenger and car services between this part of France and the Channel Islands, as well as Poole and Weymouth in mainland UK.

Travel from St Malo to Paris

Ouibus

If you’re travelling from St Malo to Paris or anywhere else in France via public transport, then the city has some good connections.

Ouibus are a great budget option with daily coach services from St Malo to Paris and other destinations.

They generally operate from near the ferry terminal near the walled city, which makes them very convenient

Alternatively, the high-speed TGV has regular services to Paris via Rennes, which depart from the new town.

Check prices for buses or trains, and book tickets online, using Trainline .

St Malo Climate & Weather

France, St Malo, Sunset

Located in the north of the country, the St Malo weather is a lot more similar to that of southern England, than southern France.

Temperatures are generally cool in the winter, but long sunny days fill the summer.

Being situated on the coast, St Malo also gets quite a lot of annual rainfall and can be windy.

The summer months of June, July and August boast the driest weather, again making this time of year the best to visit.

Sea conditions at this time are also likely to be the calmest, which is a blessing if you are travelling to St Malo by ferry!

Top Things to do in St Malo

France, St Malo, Restaurant

St Malo is perfect day trip material, with many people from the Channel Islands, in particular, making the short trip to France and back in a day.

Filled with lovely shops, cafes and restaurants, it’s easy to sample, smell and see much of what many people love about France including croissants, coffee and crepes!

Moules frites is the lunch of choice here, and of course there’s plenty of excellent wine and local cider available to wash it down with!

Otherwise strolling the ramparts and watch the huge tidal range here is a wonderful thing to do, as it walking the cobbled streets and enjoying some good petanque watching!

There’s an excellent museum in St Malo too if you want to learn more about the city and its origins.

Otherwise the beautiful beaches nearby are ideal for a swim or a sunbathe on a good summer’s day.

Camping in St Malo

France, St Malo, Ramparts

Understandably popular with many visitors arriving from the UK, St Malo has a lot of excellent campsites nearby that make the perfect accommodation choice for those travelling on a budget.

St Malo camping accommodation is specifically appealing to those that may have brought their vehicle over on the ferry too, as driving is certainly the only way to reach many of them.

That said, there are a number of hire car companies within St Malo, that you can easily use to get to your campsite if you’ve only travelled as a foot passenger.

http://www.saint-malo-tourisme.co.uk/stay/accommodation/campsites is an excellent resource for those looking to go camping near St Malo, so check it out for some super ideas.

Otherwise, Camping Municipal de la Cité d’Alet, Camping de la Fontaine and Domaine de la Ville Huchet are 3 of the closest campsites to St Malo, that all get good reviews.

The cobbled streets will lead you to the picturesque riverside of the old port and 15th century stone bridge across the river Rance. Enjoy a tasty lunch as you watch life go by on the river.

Mont St Michel

Perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks exposed to powerful tides between Normandy and Brittany stands the ‘Wonder of the West’ – a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael, and the village that grew up since the 11th century in the shadow of its great walls. We can arrange private minibus excursions on request from St Malo or from Granville.

Commanding stunning views of the bay of Mont Saint-Michel and known as the ‘Monaco of the North’ this harbour town is a popular seaside resort with a touch of ambience. 5+ Magical Day Trips from Saint-Malo

By: Author Sophie Nadeau

Last Updated on 23rd August 2021 by Sophie Nadeau

If there’s one city which you should make sure to visit in Brittany, known as Bretagne in French, then you should make it Saint-Malo. Straight out of a storybook, the walled town is surrounded by the sea on three sides and is home to oodles of fantastic foodie experiences. The Brittany town also happens to be one of the best places to stay for exploring the local area. Here’s your guide to the best day trips from Saint-Malo!

5+ Magical Day Trips from Saint-Malo in Brittany, France

Things to know before taking a day trip from Saint-Malo

Mont saint-michel, saint-servan, enjoyed reading about the best day trips from saint-malo pin this article now, read it again later:.

Whatever the time of the year that you’re planning to visit Saint-Malo , you should be prepared for a plethora of weather types. Even during the summer months, it’s not uncommon to experience several seasons in one day and so packing a rain jacket like one of these is absolutely essential.

When it comes to learning the local language, which in this case is French, even a few words or simple phrases can help you go a long way. Consider bringing along a simple phrasebook like this one to aid you in learning the basics.

Best day trips from Saint-Malo

The walled city of Dinan is often said to be one of the most beautiful towns in France, and once there, it’s not hard to see why. Home to a historic harbour, cobbled streets, and plenty of bars and eateries serving traditional Breton fare, there’s a lot to love when it comes to this beautiful little town.

As well as meandering among the many timber-framed buildings which are so synonymous with this part of France, some of the best things to do in Dinan include strolling along the well-preserved ramparts, eating freshly caught seafood (or a roasted camembert) along the harbour, and shopping for local souvenirs in the many independent boutiques dotted across town.

If you don’t have your own car, then it’s easy enough to get from Saint-Malo to Dinan. You simply need to hop on the no. 70 bus, which takes you from town to town. The fare is €2 each way and the ride takes approximately half an hour each way. Once in Dinan, I highly recommend heading to the tourist office, where you can pick up a self-guided plan of the medieval walled city .

If you prefer to take a guided tour which will take you from Saint-Malo to several areas in the region, without having to worry about public transportation, then you might consider booking Dinan, Fort la Latte, & Cap Fréhel Private Tour like this one.

Governors house dinan brittany france

Charming and picturesque, Cancale is a little off the beaten track, but is well worth visiting nonetheless. Home to around five thousand residents, who are known locally as ‘Cancalais,’ the town is best-known for its local market (which is sprawling and takes place on a weekly place every Sunday) and many seafood restaurants.

If you make it your mission to eat out just once while in Brittany, make it during your visit to Cancale. Other highlights of the town include the many nearby coastal walks, the picturesque harbour, and the Pointe du Grouin (the most Westerly point on the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel) .

Much like going to Dinan from Saint-Malo without a car, the easiest way to reach Cancale is via bus. The bus to Cancale departs from the Saint-Malo train station (which is around a twenty minute from the walled city section of the town) and the journey each way takes around half an hour.

If you’re short on time and wish to see several attractions in one day without having to worry about public transportation, then the private tour linked above in the Dinan day trip section takes visitors to Cancale and Dinan in the same day. Find out more tour details here.

cancale view, brittany, france

Gothic and imposing, one of the must-see destinations on every traveller to France’s bucket list is that of Mont Saint-Michel, an abbey which has stood for centuries atop of a tidal island. Located in Normandy, the abbey and its surrounding village are best-seen when the tide is high and the skies are clear, leading to the buildings cutting a striking scene on the Normandy landscape.

While on the island, there are plenty of things to do. As well as visiting the abbey (which is free for EU citizens and residents under the age of 26) , there are a number of hidden gems , and little lanes to snap photos of.

What’s more is that it couldn’t be easier to go from Saint-Malo to Mont Saint-Michel. There is a daily bus which goes to Mont Saint-Michel in the morning and returns in the mid-afternoon (I personally think that 6-7 hours to enjoy the tidal island is more than sufficient) .

Prices are a fixed €25 (find more details here) and this is by far the most cost effective way of getting between Saint-Malo and Saint-Michel. When visiting Mont St Michel, my top tip would be to bring your own lunch/ picnic with you- pretty much all of the eateries on the island are over-priced and are somewhat of a tourist trap.

Located just across the water from Saint-Malo, one of the easiest day trips from Saint-Malo is that of Dinard. A quintessentially Breton town boasting the likes of chic hotels and casinos, the town has long drawn numerous famous visitors.

In order to reach Dinard from Saint-Malo, you need only hop on a ferry, which takes ten minutes and runs regularly throughout the day. Once in Dinard, some of the best things to do include visiting the various beaches the town has to offer and eating local cuisine. Find more details about the ferry between the two towns here.

Yet another easy day trip you can take from Saint-Malo is to the nearby town of Saint-Servan. So close is this Brittany town that you can simply walk from the walled town to the nearby French settlement within a matter of around half an hour.

Though much less touristic and popular than its famous neighbour, Saint-Servan nonetheless offers up several points of interest which are sure to entice even the most discerning of visitors. What’s more is that the town has few tourists compared to nearby popular attractions and so you’ll likely have much of the place to yourself during your visit.

As well as boasting some pretty beautiful views onto La Manche (the English Channel) and of Saint-Malo, some of the best things to do in Saint-Servan include admiring the historic Tower of Solidor and shopping in one of the independent stores in town.

Extra day trips to St Malo included in Condor's 2023 timetable

st malo day trip from jersey

ADDITIONAL day trips to St Malo from Jersey have been included within Condor’s 2023 schedule.

The company has confirmed its new timetable, which covers its sailings from 5 January through to 31 October and can be found online at condorferries.co.uk

As well as continuing with its direct services to the UK and various other routes, the schedule includes additional day trips to St Malo from Jersey.

Condor’s chief executive, John Napton, said that the timetable was designed to bring travel confidence back to the Island after the pandemic.

‘This year, our schedule contributed to a successful summer for the local tourism and hospitality industries and that would not have been possible with our previous timetable.

‘We have had discussions with industry partners and tried, wherever possible, to accommodate feedback including the Island’s sporting, motor and other events, such as Siam Rugby, travel to the Island Games in Guernsey and the Weekender Festival next year,’ he added.

The schedule also takes into account non-sailing days that are used as a contingency in case of weather disruption.
