Perfect Island Tour For Seniors

We toured Mackinac Island a few times in our younger days when hiking, biking & climbing were an option. As seniors we wanted to share this magnificent island with friends, but didn’t know if it would be senior-friendly. It is & we had a terrific day on the island. Our party of 4 took the Arnold Ferry from St Ignace to Mackinac Island in the morning, spent the day on the island & ferried back in the late afternoon. We ate a quick, early lunch & spent some time walking Main Street. Shortly after noon we boarded a carriage drawn by 2 horses & took the slow guided tour up passed The Grand Hotel to the carriage switching station were we alit & spent over an hour in the their butterfly house. Then we boarded a different carriage drawn by 3 horses which snaked through the trails out to Arch Rock where we alit again & took lots of pictures. Then slowly back to the carriage switching station where we re-boarded a carriage drawn by 2 horses which again passed The Grand Hotel & returned use to Main Street. The tour guide/carriage operators were all very professional, informative & humorous. One of our party is recovering from hip surgery & we were concerned before arrival that this island might be too much for him. But the carriage guided tour with the butterfly house in the middle was the perfect solution. We spent about four hours completing our carriage tour of the island & we all enjoyed it thoroughly. We took lots of photos, enjoyed the beautiful views of the island & ended the day with a few tasty purchases at Sanders on Main Street. We loved the “no cars”, the leisurely pace, the sound of horses hoofs on the pavement, the spectacular views of the island from the ferry, the aromas from Main Street &, of course, The Grand Hotel. We will return.

Brought the bikes and road the Island. Grand kids enjoyed it!! Only my second time to do it in all my trips to the Island.

Although it may seem that the Island could be rather commercial and certainly it is very busy, it is so worth the trip across. We went on the slower ferry run by Arnold. This is substantially cheaper and longer but a lovely ride. It was particularly fun since one of the 'passengers' was a carriage horse!! There is masses to do but we wanted a leisurely day so wandered around enjoying the sights. You do need to watch out for cyclists and carriages but there are lots of interesting sights and lovely views if you get off the beaten track. The highlight was the visit to Grand Hotel. It costs $10 to go around the building but worth every cent. Also should you decide to have the buffet lunch the $10 counts towards the cost which makes that experience very reasonable. I have reviewed the lunch separately.

Rent a bike & take a leisure ride around the island on Lakeshore Rd. The road is 95% flat surface & there are multiple stop off spots to take in the sites. Very beautiful!

We were told less than 40% of visitors to the Island actually enjoy going any further than Main St Shops or the Highway around the Island. We were so happy to be among the minority, enjoying carriage rides, bicycling and hiking the roads, pathways and trails the Park had to offer. It is a beautiful forest of tall trees with views of Lake Huron surprising us along the way. Worth the visit.

We first took a carriage tour through the park, which provided us with lots of facts and history, but did not allow much flexibility for stopping and going where you want. Later, we rented bikes. I shared a tandem bike and that was a fun (and scary!) experience! There are multiple places where you can take alternate bike trails or stay on the main path. The best part is that there are no cars, so you really don't need to be scared to go fast around the blind turns, just watch out for carriages! Take some time and explore the park, good for all ages.

This small island is accessible only by ferry bringing visitors back in time since no motorized vehicles are allowed. Unforgettable sunsets, the clip-clop of horses plus timeless charm from a bygone era lives on at this very popular summer destination.

We look forward to stepping back in time on delightful Mackinac Island. As we travel north, the rolling farmlands of Wisconsin soon give way to the hardwood forests of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It’s not long before we arrive in Mackinaw City and our first overnight at the Hamilton Inn.

This morning board the ferry that will take us across the Straits of Mackinac to our island home for the next two nights. Begin your visit with a narrated carriage tour to view the island’s many points of interest including Skull Cave, Arch Rock, Surrey Hill and Historic Market Street. Photo fans will be delighted with the scenery and picture opportunities during this leisurely horse-drawn excursion. This afternoon we dine in elegance at the world-renowned Grand Hotel. The remainder of the day is free for exploring old-fashioned Main Street on our own. Don’t forget to try some famous Mackinac Island fudge. The Grand Hotel will be our accommodations while on the island.

This morning enjoy breakfast before heading out to enjoy your island vacation. There are lots of things to do on the island. Shopping, walking tours, ridng a bicycle, fine or casual dining and just enjoying the beauty and relaxation of a sparkling island retreat is yours today.

We return to the mainland where our motor coach awaits our arrival. As we retrace our steps and bid farewell to our traveling friends, we look forward to sharing our memories of the lovely scenery and island delights with those at home.
