Club MTV Tour - Paula Abdul

Launching six years into MTV's run, Club MTV was a half hour television show modeled after American Bandstand featuring teenagers dancing to a hit song intercut with it's official music video. The show was designed with more of a nightclub-inspired look than its predecessor Bandstand; instead of the drab confines of a TV studio, it is staged at The Palladium in New York City - a real dance club. Often there were musical guests who performed their new singles; such guests included Paula Abdul, Exposé, Jody Watley, Debbie Harry, New Kids on the Block, Vanessa Williams, Sheena Easton, Debbie Gibson, Salt-n-Pepa, MC Hammer, Taylor Dayne, Deee-lite, Pet Shop Boys, E.U., Vanilla Ice, Samantha Fox, Soul II Soul, and Black Box to name a few. Hosted by the vivacious English personality Downtown Julie Brown, Club MTV takes a cue from Soul Train with fashion-forward dancers showing off the latest moves. Club MTV was part of MTV's second generation of programming, as the channel was phasing out its original 5 VJs and introducing new ones. It aired on MTV from August 31, 1987 to June 26, 1992.

Paula performing "Cold Hearted"

Late in 1989, MTV launched their first Club MTV Tour featuring Was (Not Was), Information Society, Paula Abdul, Tone Loc and Milli Vanilli. Abdul turned out to be the biggest draw on the Club MTV Tour riding a wave of success from her hit songs “Straight Up,” “Forever Your Girl” and “Cold Hearted.” During an interview for her “Under My Spell Tour” Paula said that as part of the 1989 "Club MTV" tour, she did a lot ". . . with nothing!" she says, finishing the sentence with a giggle. Abdul continues, "It's funny. I remember when I was given that opportunity, to share the stage with five other acts, I wanted to do something to make it feel like it was my own stage, so we had little boxes, a cardboard set. I just wanted something to create my own ambience. It was a fun experience."

Did you know

Host : [interviewing Kurt Harland from Information Society] How long have you been on roller skates now? Since the Club MTV tour?

Kurt Harland : Yes since July 4th, 1989 when I vowed to spend one year on roller skates and at that point decide whether I would devote the rest of my life to skating or not at which point I did and it took the place in my life of the most important thing which used to be my pet peeves number one of which was extraneous apostrophes on signs written such as "Donut's at 10 a.m." using an apostrophe before the "s" makes me have an epileptic seizure.

Host : Oh, all right then.

Kurt Harland : What was the question?

Host : Oh, it doesn't really matter.

July 1989: Milli Vanilli Caught Lipsyncing Onstage During "Club MTV" Concert

Pop duo Milli Vanilli, with Fab Morvan (left) and Rob Pilatus (1965 - 1998), perform onstage, Chicago, Illinois, July 8, 1989. (Photo by Paul Natkin/Getty Images)

"Girl you know it's girl you know it's girl you know it's girl you know it's..."

“I knew right then and there, it was the beginning of the end for Milli Vanilli,” Pilatus admitted to the  Los Angeles Times (via Associated Press ) in November 1990. “When my voice got stuck in the computer and it just kept repeating and repeating, I panicked. I just ran off the stage.″

30 years ago today, Milli Vanilli was caught lip syncing at Lake Compounce during their performance of “Girl You Know It’s True.” 😯 pic.twitter.com/jwO7nUZrz4 — Lake Compounce (@LakeCompounce) July 21, 2019

MTV personality "Downtown" Julie Brown, on the road as the host of the Club MTV tour, had to personally cajole Pilatus back to the stage. When they did return, according to Brown, the crowd didn't care about the technical mishap.

Being a time long before social media, the incident caused barely a ripple outside of those in attendance at the Lake Compounce show. The group's massive success rolled on, culminating in February 1990 when Milli Vanilli was awarded the Grammy for Best New Artist.

Soon, however, the truth behind Milli Vanilli slowly began to unravel in very public fashion. In November 1990, Pilatus, fellow frontman Rob Morvan and producer Frank Farian outed themselves. Farian had fired both singers, who were insisting on singing on the group's second record.

"I said, 'No. I don't go for that.' Sure, they have a voice, but that's not really what I want to use on my records," Farian told the Associated Press.

"I feel like a mosquito being squeezed," countered Pilatus. "The last two years of our lives have been a total nightmare. We've had to lie to everybody. We are true singers but that maniac Frank Farian would never allow us to express ourselves."

A week after the revelation that neither faces of the group had performed on the record, Milli Vanilli was publicly stripped of the band's Grammy award for Best New Artist. It was the first and to date only time a Grammy award has been rescinded.

Acts weren't that great, songs were repeated, definitely left something to be desired. Wouldn't pay money to see it at all, disappointed with acts being late then playing for a tiny amount of time, considering how long the crowds had been waiting

‘Club MTV’ Hits the Road and It’s Live

On paper, it looked like a smash: Take the popular “Club MTV” TV dance show and put it on the road, with performances by such chart-topping artists as Tone Loc, Paula Abdul, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam and Milli Vanilli.

But early ticket sales on several dates of the Club MTV tour--which got under way last Tuesday in Mobile, Ala.--have been surprisingly sluggish.

The main problem? Fans don’t seem to understand the concept of the tour, and may even think it’s an on-the-road taping of the TV show.

“The biggest question we get is, ‘Is this is a TV show or is this a concert?’ ” said Abbey Konowitch, MTV’s vice president of programming. “Until they’ve seen the TV show come alive in concert, there’s bound to be confusion in the consumer’s mind.”

The concerts are hosted by MTV veejay Julie Brown, and feature the Club MTV Dancers and 30- to 40-minute performances by each of the acts. The show is set to play the Forum on Aug. 12 and is expected to play the Pacific Amphitheatre on Aug. 13., with Information Society and Was (Not Was) substituting for Lisa Lisa.

The tour promoter, concert industry veteran Louis Messina, said that puzzled fans keep asking, “Is it live or is it Memorex?”

“They see ‘Club MTV’ and think the artists will be singing to pre-recorded instrumental tracks,” Messina said. “It’s hurting us. We need to get across the idea that this is a real show with real live bands.”

Another possible problem: The shows feature several hot artists but no superstars--a collection of supporting acts in search of a headliner.

“We’re trying not to ride upon one mega-star,” said Messina. “We’re selling a concept. We knew it wasn’t going to be an automatic, that we’d have to go out and market this thing. But once people realize what we’re bringing, I think they’ll respond.”

MTV’s Konowitch added that keeping the spotlight on the event as opposed to the performers is one of the themes of the tour, as it was on last year’s tour built around the cable channel’s popular metal show “Headbangers’ Ball.”

“One of our philosophies with these tours is taking artists who can’t normally headline themselves and putting packages together,” Konowitch said. “On the Headbangers tour we took Anthrax, who never headlined, and put them with Helloween and Exodus and sold out arenas they couldn’t otherwise have played.”

Messina said that the early ticket sales have been up and down. He acknowledged that sales were spotty in Mobile and are also lagging in Little Rock, but said that the show sold out in one day in Milwaukee and is also doing well in New York.

“There will be certain markets where it does stronger than other markets,” said Bob Friedman, MTV’s senior vice president of marketing and promotion. “But we’re looking at this as an annuity: We want to repeat this every year. We want to use it as an umbrella to package a whole bunch of acts, take them on the road and have the party come every summer.”

BIG BASS MAN: It’s a natural idea for a musician’s biography--a book packaged with tapes so you can hear excerpts of the music you’re reading about.

But Allan Slutsky, who combined the two components for a critically hailed biography of influential Motown bass player James Jamerson, said that he backed into the innovation.

“It was out of necessity,” said Slutsky, who used the pen name Dr. Licks on the project, “Standing in the Shadows of Motown: The Life and Music of Legendary Bassist James Jamerson.”

“I’m not a writer by profession,” continued Slutsky, 37. “I’m a musician. If I had just written a straight bio about James Jamerson, it would have been a flop. My strength in getting his story across is in the music.”

James Jamerson Jr. narrates the tape, which proceeds from lighthearted anecdotes about his father’s early days at Motown to more serious recollections of his drinking problems. The tape ends with Stevie Wonder’s eulogy at Jamerson’s 1983 funeral. (Jamerson died of cirrhosis of the liver at the age of 47.)

Slutsky, whose previous books are guitar instruction manuals, said that he started investigating Jamerson’s bass parts and became “obsessed” with him: “I realized there was much more than just a bass line. There was an incredible story. I wound up talking to 200 people, and including 25 on the tape.”

The book and cassettes, shrink-wrapped together, retail for $29.95. The book is sold in music equipment and sheet music stores, but Slutsky hopes to get it in mass-market book stores.

And now? “I want to go back to doing what I do,” said the 37-year-old Philadelphia native. “This was a two-year sidetrack to my musical career where I just got obsessed with something.”

NEWS NOTES: Debbie Harry is finishing work on her first album for Sire Records, “Deaf, Dumb & Blonde.” The LP is being produced by Mike Chapman, who supervised most of Harry’s big hits with Blondie, and will include three collaborations with the Thompson Twins. The album--due in August--will also include “Bright Side,” which Harry sang in character as Diana Price on the recent music-biz episodes of CBS-TV’s “Wiseguy.” Harry took a break from the sessions to join the Tom Tom Club on stage at the final show of their three-week stand at the Second Coming club in Hollywood. Harry sang three songs with the group, including the Talking Heads’ “Psycho Killer” and the Velvet Underground’s “Femme Fatale.”

Michael Jackson’s former manager, Frank Dileo, has beat his one-time client to the punch in landing a meaty film role. Dileo, who was dismissed by Jackson four months ago, is making his acting debut as a Mafia underboss in director Martin Scorsese’s “Good Fellas,” which stars Robert DeNiro. . . . Both lyrics and guitar chords will be printed on all configurations of Jules Shear’s upcoming album, “The Third Party,” due July 24. . . . Comedian and rock groupie Sam Kinison introduced metal band Warrant at recent show at Gazzarri’s. Members of Whitesnake, Ratt and Kingdom Come joined Kinison and Warrant on a finale of “Wild Thing.” . . . Cliff Martinez, drummer for the Dickies, composed and performed the score for the critically lauded film, “sex, lies . . . and videotape.” Martinez’s only previous scoring assignment was one segment of “Pee-wee’s Playhouse.”

FINALLY: Here’s a concept album that could give you the shakes: Robert Kraft’s new “Quake City” features 10 songs woven around the story of a Hollywood game-show entrepreneur whose life is drastically altered by the Big One. The album features appearances by Bruce Willis (Kraft produced Willis’ “The Return of Bruno” album) and Janis Siegel of Manhattan Transfer. . . . Van Dyke Parks has also chosen an rather unlikely topic for a concept album--the history of U.S./Japanese relations. Parks’ “Tokyo Rose,” his first album in five years, is due next month.

News | `CLUB MTV` TAKES ITS SHOW, WITH STAR SUPPORT, ON THE ROAD

Chicago Tribune

”The Three Stooges.” So when ”Club MTV” came along, it almost seemed like high art.

The cable music channel`s high-tech dance club and hip `80s answer to

”American Bandstand” features live guests, music videos and hot dancers decked out in the height of funky but chic youth fashion. Started nearly two years ago to help MTV combat stagnant ratings, it has done well for both the network and many of its regulars. Jennifer Jones became the first black Rockette at Radio City Music Hall, while other dancers have appeared in numerous music videos and commercials.

Now the network is taking shows like ”Club MTV” on the road in cleverly packaged, large-scale tours designed to further boost the network`s visibility while offering record companies, corporate sponsors and merchandisers a shot at the wallets of MTV`s 45 million viewers. ”Club MTV Live: The Concert Tour” is the first to duplicate the format of a show. Host Julie Brown emcees a four-hour extravaganza with some of the cream of today`s up-and-coming dance-oriented crop (added together they have sold over 10 million albums).

”Club MTV” dancers and music videos appear during set changes and there is a dance area for the audience.

On Saturday, ”Club MTV Live” hits the Rosemont Horizon. The lineup includes:

– Paula Abdul, former Lakers` cheerleader turned choreographer who worked with Janet Jackson, Duran Duran and others before hitting the top of the charts with her debut single, ”Forever Your Girl.”

– Information Society, a Minneapolis dance band whose debut self-titled album reached gold and included Top 10 singles ”What`s on Your Mind (Pure Energy)” and ”Walking Away.”

– Milli Vanilli, Euro-pop rappers with two Top 10 hits already, ”Girl You Know It`s True” and ”Baby Don`t Forget My Number,” from their recent debut ”Girl . . .” album.

– Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam, who recently released a follow-up to their million-selling debut album.

– Tone-Loc, another debut wonder whose first single, ”Wild Thing,” sold more copies than any record except ”We Are the World” and whose debut album was the first rap release to hit No. 1 on the pop charts.

– Was (Not Was), a smart modern-funk band whose songs have strangely humorous lyrics and who finally found an audience with the recent ”What Up, Dog?” album.

9 Celebs Who Totally Lied During Their Home Tours

mtv club tour

“It was hard to ignore them so I just lied.”

Since the early days of MTV Cribs , fans have gotten an inside look at the homes of the rich and famous. Celebs go behind the scenes to show off their massive mansions, their incredible backyards and their fleet of luxurious cars. And while it’s fun to see how our favorite stars live, it turns out that these home tours might not be entirely accurate. Quite a few celebrities have later admitted to lying about parts of their tours -- from small things like their book collections to faking their entire home!

Find out what was fake about these home tours…

1. Ashley Tisdale

When Ashley Tisdale gave a tour of her home for Architectural Digest, she decided to spruce things up before the camera crews came inside. One of those updates included completely filling up empty shelves with books that she had never read. During filming she admitted that her husband had gone out to buy hundreds of books just days earlier.

“These bookshelves, I have to be honest, did not actually have books in them a couple of days ago. I had my husband go to a bookstore, and I was like, ‘You need to get 400 books,’” she shared . “Obviously my husband’s like, ‘We should be collecting books over time and putting them in the shelves.’ And I was like, ‘No, no, no, no. Not when AD comes.’”

2. Dakota Johnson

Fans fell in love with Dakota Johnson ’s home when she gave a tour for Architectural Digest in 2020. While walking through, she pointed out a bowl of limes on the counter of her kitchen, sharing that she loved limes and loved displaying them. A year later, Dakota admitted that they were actually a prop placed in the kitchen by home stagers -- and she was actually allergic!

“I actually didn’t even know they were in there. I was giving the tour and went into the kitchen, and it was set dressing. I’m actually allergic to limes…Limes make my tongue itch,” she revealed on The Tonight Show . “It was hard to ignore them so I just lied. I went the full opposite direction.”

3. Vanessa Hudgens

Vanessa Hudgens gave viewers an inside look at her Hollywood home in an Architectural Digest video. While in the living room, she showed off her grand piano and even played a little bit of Mozart. While she did say in the video that the piano “doesn’t get used much,” it turns out that she doesn’t know how to play at all!

“The piano came from my previous house, but I don’t play. I don’t read music, really. I’m great at faking it,” Vanessa shared in an Architectural Digest article.

When JoJo was still a teenager, she gave fans a tour of her vacation home on MTV Cribs . Years later, she revealed that she had never lived in the home at any point in time and it actually belonged to her uncle and his family.

“It was so ridiculous. The thing is, we didn’t have a home at that point. My mom and I were living out of suitcases and we were mostly in hotels. So that was actually my uncle’s house, on the Cape. That wasn’t my house. That wasn’t my stuff. When I was sitting on the spinny thing, that was his kids. That’s the truth,” she told HuffPost .

She continued, “I should’ve balled hard, and been like, ‘Welcome to my crib, look at how luxurious it is,’ and I should have rented out a place. But no. I just used my uncle's crib. So that was me lying on Cribs .”

When 50 Cent appeared on Cribs , he showed off his mansion as well as a collection of luxury cars. Years later, when he ended up in court, he testified that much of his over-the-top lifestyle was a front. In actuality, his diamond jewelry was borrowed and his fleet of cars were mostly rented.

“It’s entertainment,” he said during the trial, according to the New York Daily News . “Those cars were rented.”

These Female Celebrities All Dated Much Younger Men

Former girl group 3LW appeared on Cribs years ago but they didn’t actually own the house that they toured on the show. During the episode, they explained that they had bought a house together while working on their second album and were all living together. It wasn’t until 2021 that Naturi Naughton revealed that the house wasn’t theirs -- and they didn’t even have their own cars.

“MTV did the Cribs and back when 3LW was hot. We had to pretend. But I didn’t have a car, I didn’t have a house, I didn’t have any of those things…But we did MTV Cribs ,” on The Breakfast Club . “I had to clean the house by 7 o’clock to give it back to the owner. We had to clean up all of our stuff, we had to get a cleaning person.”

7. Robbie Williams

When Robbie Williams was in his early 20s, he appeared on Cribs for the first time, showing off an eight-bedroom manor house in England. He even had butlers working on the property. It turns out the house was actually being rented from Jane Seymour and the butlers were hired just for the shoot.

“We didn’t let [Jane] know that I was going to pretend it was my house. And because I was, like, 23 and full of spunk, I didn’t even consider other people’s thoughts or feelings, so I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Jane Seymour,” he said during a radio station appearance .

When Ja Rule appeared on MTV Cribs, he gave a tour of a five bedroom mansion in Miami -- where he threw a massive party. While he was up front that he was renting the place, it turns out that parties definitely weren’t allowed and the owner reportedly sued him for $1 million for trashing the place and causing structural damage.

Back in 2008, Bow Wow’s episode of Cribs featured his fleet of luxury vehicles. While he showed them off as if they were his own, some eagle-eyed viewers noticed that the bottom of the cars were all branded with the word “prestige.” Upon further investigation, they discovered a company called Prestige Luxury Auto Rentals in Miami -- leading many to believe that he had actually rented all of the cars.
