Majuli Island in Assam: Essential Travel Guide

How to Visit the World's Largest River Island

A place of unparalleled beauty and tranquility in India, Majuli Island is not surprisingly one of India's top off the beaten track destinations . Step back in time where people lived off the land in tight agrarian communities. This is the world’s largest river island, nestled amidst the mighty Brahmaputra River.

From its sandy banks, Majuli Island is over 420 square kilometers in size, although it is shrinking due to erosion. During the monsoon season , the island shrinks to less than half its size. And, if the ecological reports are to be believed, in 20 years this farming community will have given way to the environment completely and cease to exist. So, there’s no time to waste if you wish to see this highlight of the North East region.

Where is It?

Majuli Island is located in the state of Assam. Situated in the Brahmaputra River, it is 20 kilometers from the city of Jorhat and 326 kilometers from Guwahati. Majuli Island is accessible only via a one-hour ferry ride from the tiny town of Nimati Ghat (about 12 kilometers from Jorhat).

There are two towns on the island, Kamalabari and Garamur, and many little villages dotted throughout the landscape. Kamalabari is the first town you’ll encounter, about 3 kilometers from the ferry and Garamur just a couple of kilometers further away. Both have basic provisions available.

Getting There

From Jorhat, you'll need to proceed to the ferry departure point at Nimati Ghat, which is about 20 minutes from the center of town. To get there, it's cheapest (although not the most comfortable!) to take the bus or shared auto rickshaw. Otherwise, be prepared to pay 500-1,200 rupees for a private auto rickshaw or taxi.

Ferries leave Nimati Ghat numerous times a day. According to the most recent timetable, there are hourly departures at 8.30 a.m., 9.30 a.m., 10.30 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., and 3.30 p.m. From Kamalabari Ghat on Majuli Island there are return departures at 7 a.m., 7.30 a.m., 8.30 a.m., 10.30 a.m., 12.30 p.m., 1.30 p.m. and 3 p.m. The frequency is less during the monsoon season and if the weather is bad there won't be any services at all.

A ferry ride costs 15 rupees per person, one way, and an additional 700 rupees if you want to take your car. It's a government-operated service, so don't expect anything luxurious (the ferry is just a big wooden boat with benches). A car is advisable as there is limited transport to get around the island, although renting a bicycle is a feasible option once you’re in town. At the suggestion of Kipepeo , a helpful North East India Tour operator, we arranged a private vehicle with prices starting from 2,000 rupees per day for vehicle and driver.

If you’re planning on taking a vehicle do call up the day before and book to ensure they save you a spot. Bookings can be made in Assamese only, so get a local to help you: Ferry Manager +91 9957153671.

If you don’t have your own vehicle, you can jump on one of the packed buses or shared auto rickshws that greet the ferries and will take you to Kamalabari or Garamur. They won't drop you to where you're staying though. Alternatively, private jeeps are available for a few hundred rupees. To cut the cost, you can choose to share them with other travelers who may be going your way.

Jorhat is accessible by road and train. Bus services go regularly to and from major towns in Assam including Guwahati, Tezpur and Sivasagar, as well as Kaziranga National Park . There is also a Shatabdi train service (12067) from Guwahati to Jorhat that leaves every day except Sunday at 6.30 a.m. and arrives in Jorhat at 1.30 p.m. If you’re driving, the roads to Jorhat aren’t bad. Thanks to the new highway from Guwahati, it is possible to do the journey in about six hours.

There's also a daily non-stop flight to Jorhat from Kolkata traveling on IndiGo.

When to Visit

Majuli Island can be visited all year round, weather permitting. The best time to go there is during the winter, between November and March, when water levels have receded and birds have migrated to its shores. During the wet season (from July to September) much of the island disappears under water, but it is still possible to visit, although getting around may be challenging in parts.

What to See and Do

Tribal and farming communities inhabit the majority of Majuli Island. Hire a bike and enjoy the picturesque views of rice paddies, small villages and roads lined with bamboo archways. On the roadside watch villagers practicing the ancient craft of hand looming that the region is famous for. You can also purchase the brightly colored textiles at local road stalls.

For many Hindus, Majuli Island is a pilgrimage site. Peppered with 22 satras , you can visit each of these on the island or select just a few. A satra is a Vishnu monastery where teachings, plays and prayers are conducted. The satras are centered around a large hall where the activities are held. Some of the oldest satras on Majuli Island were built in the 1600s and are still in use today, albeit a little worse for wear.

The largest satras include Uttar Kamalabari (near the town of Kamalabari), Auni Ati (about 5 kilometers from Kamalabari) that is the oldest satra and Garmur. There is also a museum at Auni Ati that you can visit from 9.30 a.m. until 11 a.m., and noon until 4 p.m. (10 rupees Indian or 50 rupees for a foreigner).

Stop by the Chamaguri Satra, a small family satra, and watch them make traditional masks depicting characters from the Ramayana and Mahabharata that are used in the plays performed there. While the plays and dances are performed at the satras, these are done at specific times for religious purposes and are not generally a daily event nor open for tourists.

Majuli Island is also popular for bird watching. The wetlands house migratory birds during winter, with bird watching a popular past time between November and March. Birds that can be seen here include pelicans, storks, Siberian cranes and whistling teals. There are also plenty of wild geese and ducks traversing the roads and wetlands. There are three main areas for bird watching on the island; the southeast, the southwest and the northern tip of the island.

Travel Tips

There are two major festivals on the island that you can attend.

The Majuli Mahotsav is a local festival that celebrates the island. It is held in January in the town of Garamur. You can mingle with locals, check out local dances, watch tribal women prepare local delicacies and pick up some local crafts. Handloom textiles in bright colors and bags made from bamboo are some of the items to look out for.

Ras Mahotsav is a Hindu festival held around November, during the full moon in the month of Kartik. It celebrates the life of Lord Krishna with dancing that goes on for three days. Pilgrims flock to the island at this time to celebrate this festival, making it a great time to visit.

While the festivals are interesting, Majuli Island is really about getting back to nature and experiencing farm and island life the way it has been for years. Take it easy and enjoy the relaxed pace of life here, there’s little need to rush.

Where to Stay

Places to stay on Majuli Island are scarce, but Piran from Kipepeo put us in contact with his friend who runs what is probably the best one there. La Maison de Ananda (the House of Happiness) has a wide variety of accommodations, ranging from traditional bamboo huts on stilts to air-conditioned rooms in a new concrete block. It's quaint and peaceful. The amenities in the bamboo stilt huts are basic but very comfortable, and hot water is available by bucket 24 hours a day. The huts are priced at around 1,800 rupees per night for up to three people.

The owner Jyoti and manager Monjit are very helpful. Plus, they have scooters and bicycles for rent. You can order a delicious and filling tribal thali for dinner, and even watch the ladies preparing it in the inviting kitchen.The tribal thali costs 350 rupees per person. Wash it down with local rice beer.

It is possible to stay at some of the satras, but these are generally meant for pilgrims and the facilities are very basic.

Welcome to the ultimate Majuli Island travel guide! Majuli Island was one of the places I was desperate to visit while I was in North East India.

Not only is it the world’s biggest river island, but it’s also an island that may not be here in 20 years’ time. So, I had to visit before it was too late.

This island is crammed full of culture and diversity for you to experience. It’s untouched by the modern world and stays true to its Assamese tribal traditions and values.

People live in bamboo huts, cook on the fire, make things by hand, and hardly use modern technology.

Instead of the concrete jungle with phone wires and sky-high buildings, you’ll find nature, wildlife, and serenity. Monasteries, colourful dresses, creatively crafted masks, and friendly people behind their open doors.

It’s important to visit soon, before it’s too late

Majuli Island is, unfortunately, eroding gradually due to the flooding from the Brahmaputra River. In twenty years or so may be uninhabitable or cease to exist.

Every year these floods prove fatal with hundreds of lives and houses taken in the process, which is a pretty scary thought.

Majuli has only recently been pronounced a district in Assam (35th) as it now has a population of over 160,000. But, the future is uncertain for the Majuli tribes as the rate of flooding is making the island at risk of submerging in 15-20 years’ time.

When I visited it was hard to believe that was the case but I was visiting in the dry season of winter (September – March). This is the peak time for tourism and the ‘safer’ months. But, when it comes to the rainy seasons flooding is a constant struggle.

My guide explained that the dry roads we were riding on in December were submerged in water after the floods. If you look at this picture below, you can see the island’s gradual decline.

The government is taking action by raising embankments and installing geo bags but the Majuli Island Protection & Development Council says this has worsened the problem.

So, it’s definitely worth putting Majuli Island as a must-see! You never know how long it will be there.

Where is Majuli Island in North East India? When is the best time to visit Majuli?

Majuli Island can be found in the state of Assam and is easily accessed 20 kilometres from the main city of Jorhat.

To get to Jorhat from Guwahati, you can take the National Highway 27 and the AT Road.

If you’re travelling by bus, regular buses head to Jorhat from the main bus stand of Paltan Bazaar in Guwahati.

As the journey is around 8 hours, a great stop along the way is Kaziranga National Park.

This is home to 70% of the world’s one-horned rhino population!

The best time to visit Majuli Island

Majuli Island is best visited in the peak season of winter (September – March) as this is the dry season and when the weather is most pleasant.

As above, April – August sees heavy rains and so you may find that the ferries won’t run, there aren’t many touristy things to do and half of Majuli Island is flooded!

Always check for regular news updates before you head there, as you don’t want to be caught in a freak flood.

How to reach Majuli Island

Majuli Island can only be accessed by boat and a public ferry runs from Jorhat to Majuli Island daily in peak season.

The cost of this ferry is 15 rupees for a single passenger.

But, if you have a vehicle you need to load you’re charged more (I’ll cover this below).

I know it can be frustrating to find up-to-date times and prices, so I’ll put them here for your reference.

If you don’t catch the last ferry on/off the island you’ll be turning back and staying the night in Jorhat/Majuli again.

Arriving on Majuli Island – tips for when you land!

When you land on Majuli Island you’ll reach the ferry dock. From here, the nearest hotels and guest houses are around 2-3 kilometres away.

There are public rickshaws that will take you to the two main ‘towns’ of Majuli. That’s right, it’s so big there are municipalities.

These will be cheap (around 30 rupees) but won’t take you directly to where you’re staying.

If you wanted to get private transport, there are many private jeeps and rickshaws that will be waiting to take you.

I shared a sumo jeep with two other people and we paid 100 rupees each for 3 kilometres.

Don’t worry about having your maps out, the drivers will know where you’re staying.

Hotels and Majuli Island Guest Houses

There are many guest houses that are popping up all the time on Majuli Island due to the growing demand and popularity but there aren’t an endless amount of options to choose from.

This is an island which is new to tourism after all. There are options to book online but expect a sky high price.

I personally, if you’re on a budget, would land here then negotiate with the guesthouses in person. I’ll put a few options below.

La Maison de Ananda

I stayed at La Maison de Ananda which was more than just a guesthouse, it was the FIRST guest house that was ever built on Majuli Island!

It was founded by a French couple who fell in love with Majuli and you can still see the deed in a frame there. It made the local newspapers too.

It was a gorgeous traditional bamboo hut. It had three beds, a porch, and a bathroom.

The staircase was also traditional which included climbing down a wooden pole with footholes carved in. It was fun but scary in the dark.

There is also a more modern concrete option if you would prefer, but I would say that Majuli is an island of traditions! For dates and rates available for La Maison de Ananda see here. 

Risong guest house

If you’re looking for more budget accommodation than slap-bang opposite is Risong guest house. The rooms are also made out of bamboo.

The rates are around 400 a night for a double room and 300 a night for a single.

You pay extra for hot water, breakfast, and dinner. It’s basic but, for the price, you get what you need for a good night’s sleep.

It even has a mosquito net which was vital even in winter. The dinner options are amazing and Mr. Risong’s wife cooks up an amazing array of dishes.

If you take the meat option you’ll be fed Chicken or Fish, potatoes, vegetables, rice. You can even request fruit wine if the mood takes you!

They have large bamboo huts and tents which you can rent privately or share.

Travelling around Majuli Island: transport options

As Assam’s capital of culture, there’s more than enough to do on the largest river island in the world!

could spend days and even weeks exploring, getting lost in nature, and experiencing the rich culture.

Depending on your time and budget, there are plenty of transport options available to suit you and what you want to get out of your trip.

Bear in mind that although Majuli Island is HUGE, the tourist spots aren’t in typical locations or on main roads.

Usually, the activities and buildings to visit are on the back roads and so I would suggest it’s worth arranging an organised day tour by hiring a taxi.

Or, at the very least, bring a guide with you in your car to show you around the island.

Majuli Island Rickshaws

There are public rickshaws that are on the island and these will usually be shared.

Like I said earlier they only really head to two of the main ‘towns’. As these are for locals to get around, they don’t target the tourist spots.

Majuli Island taxis

The best option, in my opinion, is to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

If you organise a whole day tour this will also, in the long run, save a few pennies as you’ll cover off everything in one! 

Majuli Island has lots of tourist attractions to tick off and some are around 40 kilometres away from each other.

The taxi associations have a locked-in price of 1600 rupees for a full day (8 hours). So, if you have a few of you it’s really good value.

Majuli Island cycling

Many guesthouses, including my own, provided cycling as an option and I’d say if you were just planning on getting out in nature this is perfect.

This is also an option if you have a week or so and just want to hit one attraction a day.

But, I’d say you may get exhausted trying to cover too much ground on a bike.

The distances are pretty brutal, not to mention you’ll be navigating yourself (maps and GPS aren’t the best here!).

Renting a cycle can be anything from 100 – 300 rupees a day.

Things to do on Majuli Island

Tourists flock here to experience traditional Assamese culture. In many ways, this island is untouched by the modern world.

There aren’t any skyrise buildings, satellite dishes, or wires. Everything is almost as God intended.

Fishermen make their nets and fish with bamboo, looms hang on the bottom of huts to make dresses, clay is gathered to make pots and they dry out in the sun, boats are made by hand, masks take weeks to design and make.

Nothing is mass-produced, there’s no factories or quick fix, it’s all produced from the tribes on this island!

I fell in love with it. The simpleness of it was inspiring.

I’ll take you through the main tourist interests on Majuli Island that you can get involved with while you’re here.

Visit the famous Hindu Satras and Monasteries

The world-famous Satras of Majuli are the main thing you have to experience here.

If you haven’t visited a Satra on Majuli Island, your visit wouldn’t be complete.

The Satra’s are Hindu places of worship that were created through the ideology of Neo-Vaisnavism of Sankardeva.

A Satra plays an important part of Assamese life and there were originally 64 on Majuli built in the 16th century. Today, 31 are still in use.

These aren’t just religious institutions on Majuli island, they also provide a home to promote traditional culture, literature, and arts.

There are two sides to Satras one is the Grisathi Satras which are liberal, allowing people to marry and promote arts.

The others are Udasin which is more of a conservative celibate monastic order. Both are interesting to visit and provide some amazing insight into Assamese culture.

Udasin Satra

The first monastery we visited was an Udasin Satra called, Dakhinpat Satra. This is the chief Satra that is patronised by the Ahom ruler or the head of the Satras.

Here, we wandered around the monastery taking in all the beautiful religious buildings and artwork.

Then, we explored the grounds which was a really beautiful and peaceful area to walk around. It must be so tranquil for religious study and prayer.

On our walk, we met and were kindly invited in for tea by one of the monks who live in the monastery.

It was so interesting to ask him questions about his life here.

For example, his parents chose for him to come here as he was selected by his religious teacher. Later in life, he believed it was his calling.

Sri Sri Auniati Satra

Later, we visited the Sri Sri Auniati Satra. Whereas Dakhinpat was Udasin the Sri Sri Auniati Satra was Grisathi.

There weren’t many monks around at this time but we explored the temples here.

I loved the religious artwork and the beautiful idols within the temple walls.

Top tip: You have to take your shoes off within the whole of the satra grounds. There will be places to store your shoes! Also, dress moderately, these are places of worship.

See where the Majuli Masks are made

Whenever I have seen any advertising for Majuli Island, it usually comes in the form of the traditional masks from there.

So, I was dying to see one of the workshops where these are made.

On our tour we visited Mr. Hemchandra Goswami’s workshop, Natun Samaguri Satra, to take a peek at the process! A professional of his trade.

As the presentation talk was in Hindi, I couldn’t really understand the complete mask-making process but I could tell from the actions what was going on.

Thankfully my guide could translate some of it for me.

The mask designs, depending on the complexity, can take anything from a few weeks to months.

People from all over the world write in for orders due to the quality and history of the profession and Mr. Goswami’s amazing skills.

What was even more amazing is that Mr. Goswami doesn’t draw any designs down, it’s all in his head!

Masks and vignettes can be made with moving mouthpieces, hair, body parts, and all sorts!

Traditionally these masks are worn for festivals and theatrical performances and once a year Majuli Island celebrates Ras Leela festival for Bhaona which is the perfect time to see them in action!

I REALLY wanted to try some on and, for a small donation, the owner was kind enough to let me wear some!

I have to admit that these masks are really hard to wear and almost suffocating. I don’t know how people can wear them for more than 5 minutes!

Be inspired by traditional Assamese dancing

One of the things I love about India is the rich heritage and diversity of the country.

One of these things is how many different types of dancing there is!

Every state, and even its own tribe in North East, has its own dance style and the women have their own dress designs.

The Majuli Island dresses were so vibrant and colourful and I was honoured to be invited to watch a traditional dance performance.

It was located in one of the villages at sunset and it was a beautiful show.

Three men played traditional instruments while the ladies sang and dance all around us.

I’m always amazed by how in time the ladies keep and how these dances span back hundreds of years.

These dance shows are usually prepared on request, so if this is something you’re interested in; enquire with your guesthouse owner.

Watch pottery, dresses and boats being made by hand

One of the first places we visited was a small village on the West side of the Island.

We were invited to come and see some traditional Assamese hand-looming and pottery being made!

The family was so sweet and was more than happy to show us how they make their handloom patterns.

Nearly every hut on stilts had a loom that was set up at the bottom with all the strings laid out.

In Assam, traditional colours are usually red and white and so these were the colours that were being used here.

Each time to add a horizontal layer of string to the pattern, the lady needs to pass her loom through the vertical strings.

This is a timely process and requires precision. To make one dress could take more than a month.

We were also shown how the pottery is made here on the island. This hut had a clay pit nearby as they were next to the river.

The lady would grab her clay and a wheel, mold the clay and turn the wheel with her feet. Each time she needed to build upon the pot, she’d add water.

Next, the pots are laid out to dry in the sun, and, once completely dry, they’re then painted for decoration. As I only had a small backpack I couldn’t take one home with me but I wished I could.

Next, we were taken to the boatyard. This was such a scenic work location for the guys that were making the boats.

These boats are completely made by hand and take a few months to completely construct.

Each boat will cost you around £4,000. A steal compared to UK prices but these are made only out of wood and I’m not sure if that price includes an engine!

It was so interesting to watch these being made. The owner said that he gets orders from on and off the island to prepare these, so he’s got a roaring trade.

Immerse yourself in a theatrical tale with Majuli theatre

Majuli is famed for its theatre performances and when I was visiting, I was lucky enough to be here a the same time as the Delhi National School of Drama was on tour.

A famous institution that is one of its kind in India.

They were performing a rendition of Parijat Haran in the Uttar Kalamabari Satra which had its first paid performance that weekend.

Luckily for us, they were offering a final rehearsal viewing absolutely free!

Of course, there were a few pauses to correct lines and dancing, but as it was the final rehearsal they had all the costumes on and it was pretty much perfect!

Again, the performance was in Hindi but it was absolutely stunning to watch! The songs, dancing, and music were so good it translated to any language you wanted it to be.

Take a leap of faith and explore

Aside from the major tourist attractions, Majuli is an untouched gem just waiting to be explored.

You’ll meander through endless fields, spot unusual wildlife, visit remote villages, meet friendly locals, and have a whole blank chapter waiting to fill with Majuli adventures.

The people here are honestly some of the most friendly I’ve ever met, even with the language barrier so meet some locals and explore their homeland.

Best restaurants on Majuli Island

There aren’t really many restaurants on the island. They are mostly Dhaba’s which is like a cheap local eatery.

These will offer Thali’s, sweets, and local dishes which will be fish or veg options.

One of the tourist-approved restaurants that I was recommended to try was the Ural, a traditional food hut. This also sold the traditional Assamese Thali.

If you’re not familiar with a Thali it’s essentially rice loaded in the middle of your plate.

You’re then given little dishes of curries, chutney’s, dahl, veg options, and even chapati’s in some places.

Despite the amount of food, these are usually budget options. Thali’s were anything from 70 – 150 rupees in North East India.

Things to consider before you visit Majuli

• The Phone signal is pretty bad here and wifi is pretty much non-existent. So, make sure you’re prepared for a few days going MIA.
• Be prepared for foggy mornings. The island is surrounded by water and in the morning time it’s shrouded by thick fog. This usually clears by around 10am or so. But, when I was trying to get off Majuli Island my ferry got stuck in the fog for over 3 hours. So, prepare for delays or leave when the fog has cleared.
• Whereas it takes one hour to reach Majuli from Jorhat, it takes 2 hours to get back to Jorhat due to the boat fighting the current. Make sure you leave enough time if you have onward travel plans.

• It’s good to note that depending on what time you need to leave on the ferry, you should leave at least 30 minutes to reach the dock.
• I would bring as much cash as you can with you. Although there are ATM’s on the island, these aren’t always open and don’t have a big supply of cash available. They also only open from 9am – 7pm. After that it’s shut.
• Like most things in North East India in winter season, shops and restaurants shut at around 7/8pm. There also isn’t much street lighting – but it makes it more beautiful to see stars!

So that completes my majuli island travel guide.

Although I only spent a few days here, it will always stick with me as one of the most interesting places I’ve visited. It’s like a mood and it’s catching.

You’ll start to enjoy the laid-back, easy lifestyle and receive such warm hospitality you’ll never want to leave.

It’s such a shame that this island may cease to exist someday. It’s like a jewel that needs to be preserved and the people here live each year in fear that their houses and even their families are at risk.

I really hope that something more can be done to stop the rapid decline of such a beautiful place.

Can I get any contacts to guide us in our tour

Hi Dean, I went to Majuli island and when I got off just asked one of the drivers for a day tour and paid him off of the boat to see the main sites. But, if you're looking for a specific type of tour the Majuli Tourism website seems to have had a makeover and provides tour ideas here. Of course, this is North East and so if you send an email, you may not get a reply! But, there is a tourism office on the island where you can pop in and I'm sure they will be happy to help organise a tour for you. This seems your best bet so you have a legitimate tour guide. Hi Rohit, thank you for your feedback. I loved Majuli Island and I'm sure you will too! I think March is a good time to visit as it's still within peak season, but when April/May hit its hot and monsoon season. They may not allow tourists there due to risk of flooding. I stayed on Majuli Island for 3 nights in the end. But, I wish I had stayed a week it was that beautiful. Have a great time! Sophie x

Top 12 Things to Do in Majuli: How to Make the Most of Your Trip?

So, Majuli got famous because it was among the largest river islands in the world. But what exactly are the things to do in Majuli?  What are the main attractions to see here? Is it worth the effort?

I have seen questions like these often and while a few things are known to all, I think most people do not fully understand the scope offered by the Island beyond crossing the Brahmaputra on a Ferry. So, this is a quick list that helps you to make the most of the river island. Of course, you may not be doing all of them but pick a few things as per your interests and convenience.

However, I must also point out that Tourism in Majuli Island is good for “doing nothing”. You can simply find a good place to stay (Check the first point below) and relax. Internet connectivity is good in Majuli nowadays and so you can use it as a Workation destination and stay here for weeks!

What to See and Do in Majuli?

Stay at a Traditional Bamboo Cottage

During my visit back in 2017, I found 2-3 resorts in Majuli apart from the government accommodation and Satra stays (many of the satras have guesthouses). However, when I returned in 2020, I saw at least a dozen resorts, homestays, campsites, and some more under construction. The bulk of them are scattered along the Kamalabari-Garamur stretch but other areas also have a few. So, this is your best option to stay in Majuli and this itself is an experience. Most resorts and homestays follow this design which is actually a traditional Mishing design used in the villages. You can opt for other places too by these is the most popular form of stay here. Rates vary as per facilities from INR 500-2500 but most of them generally maintain different options for different budgets.

Go Cycling in Majuli

This is the greenest trend that has started to grow in Majuli. Last time also I cycled by borrowing one from the caretaker at the hotel. But now bonafide cycle rental shops have opened up at various spots. They also seem to have come to an agreement among themselves so rates are uniform everywhere. I talked to one guy at the store called Chitra Partha just outside Garamur. He is basically a cycle mechanic who repairs cycles but now the shop has a dozen cycles to rent to tourists, which is providing additional income. So, there are a couple of cycle rental spots just out of Garamur on the Northern side where you can get one for INR 150 a day.

Complete the Satra Trail

If you are planning to visit Majuli I am sure you have heard of the Satras (Neo-Vashnavite Monasteries). It is a good way to divide the days according to the Satras  (Neo-Vaishnavite Monasteries) of Majuli because there are many Satras spread all over the island and other attractions can also be covered along the way. All you have to do here is to read up a bit and find out the main Satras and check their locations on the map. You can pick one area and cover 2-3 of them each day along with other attractions. Originally there were 64 of them although some had to shift due to erosion but still, there are 22 of them remaining. The most important Satras that you must have on your list are Garamur Satra, Auniati Satra, Uttar Kamalabari Satra, Notun Kamalabari Satra, Dakhinpat Satra, Notun Samaguri Satra, Bengenaaati Satra , Bhogpur Satra , and many more.

Attend the Majuli Raas Utsav in the Autumn

A lot of eclectic performing arts were developed over centuries and are still practiced in the Satras. In order to experience them, you need to time your visit right. The best time to do so is to do it in the time of Raas Lila, an annual festival performed on the full moon day (Purnima) in the months of October-November (Kati- Aghon) when the weather gets pleasant after the harsh monsoons. Meet the Majuli Mask Artists at Notun Samaguri Satra

You will see the masks everywhere in Majuli and you can also catch performances wearing them at various satras. You will have to ask around for timing. However, if you want to see the mask-making process, you need to go to the Notun Samaguri Satra , which is the hub of mask-making art. You can talk to artists at work here and also buy masks as souvenirs.

Get a Slice of Medieval History at the Auniati Museum

Most major Satras have their share of medieval relics but the best collection is the Museum at Auniati Satra. There is an entry fee of INR 10 and photography is not allowed inside. Nevertheless, do pay a visit here as it has a lot of interesting artifacts. There are Ahom era guns, swords, dresses and much more to be seen here. This was one of the major Satras patronized by the Ahom rulers and this explains the existence of these items here. It maintained its prominence even after that and that is why some colonial-era items are visible too, such as a chess set made of ivory.

Explore Local Villages

Majuli is primarily a rural area with a couple of town-like spots. Most of the resorts and homestays are also located inside the villages. So, you do not even have to opt for any specific type of rural tourism, it will happen anyway. These are also the best places for exploring local culture, cuisine, and lifestyle. If you are into photography, these will be the best options.

Spot Waterbirds

I have already mentioned the delights of spotting birds all over the island. Considering the river that surrounds it and all the water bodies within, the birding potential has not been fully recognized here. Especially in the winter, a lot of migratory birds also land here. You can see them everywhere and the easiest spot is the bridge over Doriya river between Kamalabari and Garamur.

Walk Along the Riverbank

The white “sand” on the river bank is actually the silt carried by the rivers. While in the rainy season they mostly remain underwater, in the winters they become pleasant and you can enjoy a lazy picnic on the bank staring at the white and blue expanses and exploring the riverine life of Assam. It is a landlocked region and riverbanks are the closest thing to the seashore (Do not litter the banks though).

Explore Local Cuisines & More

Until recently finding a good restaurant was difficult in Majuli but now new eateries cropping up all over the island due to the increasing tourist influx. Over the course of the next few days, I realized that this is the trend all over the Island and even locals are now eating out more often than not. You can consider this to be the first sign of urbanization in Majuli. More eclectic travellers who are only interested in local cuisine should not get discouraged either as I spotted one Mising Kitchen right in the middle of Garmur and another one run by Enchanting Majuli just 15 minutes ahead. Many more ethnic restaurants seem to be coming up.

Shop for Local Handicrafts 

I spotted one government-supported handicraft shop (On Kamalabari Garamur Road), one handloom workshop run by a local women’s cooperative (On the Kamalabari-Samagri Road), and another apparel store run by a family inside Chitadar Village (Just ahead of Garamur). Last time I only found Majuli Masks being sold at Samaguri Satra (Which is definitely recommended). Those masks are now in high demand while these new additions are encouraging signs for those who like to shop.

Meet The Forest Man

You must have heard of the forest man of India . He is the one who single-handedly built a forest. A great conservational success story, this spot called Molai Forest is not exactly in Majuli but in a nearby spot which is not far from Nimatighat, from where you catch the ferry to Majuli. So, if you have time, you can take a detour to this one too.

Majuli, in the state of Assam is the biggest river island of the world, situated on River Bramhaputra. The total area of this island district, which is also the first of its kind in the country, was once spread in an area of 1256 square kilometer, but now it has reduced to only 875 square kilometers, as the result of soil erosion. It is one of the famous travel destinations of North East India, especially during the time of the Majuli Bihu, a traditional dance festival. This island has been the cultural capital of Assam from as early as the 16th century, and is the home of people from the Missing tribe who had migrated from Arunachal Pradesh. The only way to access the island of Majuli is by crossing the mighty Brahmaputra River on an over-crowded ferry from Nimati Ghat in Jhorat. The journey takes around 45 minutes and is an experience by itself.

2. Brahmaputra white sand

As soon as you reach the Majuli island, you will be greeted by white beach sand which is actually silt carried along by the might river. The SUV ride out of the jetty to the main island is one heck of a bumpy ride. It’s like sitting on a camel.

3. Bamboo Hut stay

Of all the accommodation available on the island, spending your time living in a bamboo hut is a one of a kind, once in a life experience. These bamboo huts can be found only in Kamlabari and is worth the long travel to the river island.

4. Rent a cycle

The best way to explore this massive island is by renting a bicycle for a day or two and peeling your way around the place.  The humble bicycle is the most popular mode of transportation used on the island, from school children to adults everyone likes to stay eco-friendly on this island.

5. Majuli Thali

Food lovers will just love the food on the island as it is all you can eat veg and non-veg thalis. The thalis are very economically priced and included papad, dal, rice, one vegetable, tiny steamed jacket potatoes, local Assami style spicy chutney and rice kheer in the end. The non-veg thali includes either river fish or chicken. It’s an absolute steal when you see the final bill.

6. Mask makers village

Majuli is home to a traditional art of mask making which has been native to the island since the beginning of civilization there.  The artist here make masks of various Gods, deities and other gothic idols from the religious books. These masks have high demand in theatre art and street plays and none of the mask on display are for sale. All of them are only made as per order and shipped directly to the desired location.

7. The Monasteries

Majuli is also the cultural capital of Assam and the monasteries around the island which are also known as Satras. It is a unique feature of Vaishnavism in Assam, founded by Sankardeva, the father of Assamese culture. The satras are not just monasteries, but centres of traditional performing arts. This is the best place to see cultural activities without having to shell out too much.

8. Mising Tribe

Scattered all over the island of Majuli is the Missing or Mising tribe. They are the single biggest tribe in the entire North East India. A visit to one of the tribal villages is something worth doing since it’s a very unique experience to see how people actually live in houses made purely out of bamboos. The tribals are extremely friendly and love to pose for the camera. Don’t be surprised if they ask you to stay back for lunch.

9. Rice beer

A specialty of the Missing Tribals is the traditional fermentation of rice over the entire day to produce home-brewed rice alcohol. All over the missing tribes, the rice beer is served as a welcome drink to anyone and everyone to enters their homes.

10. Stay a week

After making it all the way to the biggest river island in the world there is no point in rushing through and running out to explore other parts of Assam or the North East. It’s best you rush the rest of your trip and end your journey on this island with plenty of time to spare. You can spend days just living the island life. A Colorful Trip to Majuli, Assam

Trip in a Nutshell:-

Booked a cab from Dibrugarh to Jorhat . Left Dibrugarh in early morning (06:00 AM). Drop off at Neemati ghat in Jorhat. Took a ferry from Neemati ghat to Majuli. Drop off at Majuli. That day visited The Missing (Mishing) Village and The Sunset point. One night halt at Majuli in Bamboo huts. Next day visited the Kamalabari satra, Auniati Satra and the Mask maker’s house. Left Majuli after lunch (03:00 PM). Back to Dibrugarh by evening (08:00 PM).

Brief Overview of the Trip:-

Majuli is a fresh water island in the mighty Brahmputra River in Assam . The nearest town to Majuli is Jorhat. I came to know about Majuli from the localites here in Dibrugarh.

It was the festival of colours in 2014. Five of us decided to go there. As we all were away from our families, we wanted to celebrate this festival in a unique way. Before leaving for Majuli, I enquired about the tourist attractions and accommodation options in Majuli. After a few phone calls and interactions with localites in Dibrugarh, I was equipped with a list of places to visit in Majuli. We decided to book our accommodation after reaching there only.

It’s a bit difficult to grab a day or two from a busy schedule of job. As I am not a professional traveller, travelling is like an escape for me from the monotonous life of an engineer.

So we left Dibrugarh on one bright morning at around 06:00 AM. We had booked a one way cab from Dibrugarh to Jorhat. We reached Jorhat at 09:30 AM and took a drop at the Neemati ghat. There is ferry service at regular intervals for public transport to Majuli from Neemati ghat. We enquired about the next ferry and it was at 10:30 AM. There were a few small chai/samosa stalls at Neemati ghat. As it was the time of Holi, we had bought water guns from Dibrugarh. So to kill time, we started playing with them. Running here and there just to escape was fun.

The ferry was on time and we boarded it. There were seats for passengers to sit but we decided not to sit there and we reached the upper part of ferry. The ferry left Neemati ghat and a few of us started photography. Rest of us were singing songs and just enjoying the air. The day was a bit sunny. A cloudy one would have amplified the atmosphere. We reached Majuli in a ferry ride of one hour. The ferry point in Majuli was a bit outside the town. We took a sharing taxi and reached the town. Now we had to look for a place to stay which was not possible until we had a vehicle to roam around and search. We wasted a lot of time in bargaining with the taxi drivers. Finally we booked a taxi for hotel search as well as local sightseeing. The taxi driver took us to some 4-5 places to stay but we were not convinced by any of them. Finally we reached Eco-Camp Me:Po Okum (Happy house).

It was a beautiful place spread over a large area. It had bamboo cottages, a grassy lawn, a small bamboo structure to chill out and a serene environment. We promptly agreed to stay at this place. After getting refreshed, we took our lunch and decided to visit the Mishing (or Missing) village that day. It was around 20 km from our camp.

The Mishing Village:-

It was a pristine village with stilt houses to survive extreme nature of Bramhaputra in monsoons. Beneath the stilt houses, there was a traditional arrangement to weaving gamochas and Assamese saares. We roamed in the village to absorb as much as we can. We partially interacted with the villagers. None of us could speak Assamese and none of them could speak Hindi or English. But our interaction was joyful. A family invited us in there house. They not only showed us there house but also offered us freshly brewed rice beer. We were impressed by the hospitality of that village. Before leaving the village, we played with some children there, clicked their photographs and left.

The sunset point:-

Then we reached the bank of Bramhaputra River which is a so called sunset point of Majuli. Actually sunset and river is in itself a great combination. We sat there, captured the sunset and appreciated it. Now it was getting dark so we came back to our happy cottages.

We were full of energy when we reached the camp. So we decided to play games we used to play during our childhood. All of us came in the lawn of that camp. We started with ICE-WATER and then played a lot of other games. It was craziness to do cartwheels one after another on an island somewhere on the globe. After getting totally exhausted, we refreshed up and went for dinner. The food was very simple yet very delicious. We tried bamboo chicken. It is cooked in the trunk of bamboo tree and the essence of bamboo penetrates inside the chicken and it was fantastic. After a heavy dinner, we roamed inside the camp for a while and then started an experience sharing session. We were digging our past moments of fun, fear, surprise and a lot more. Late night we slept. It was really cold at night, even in March.

Next morning, we explored the spots nearby our camp. We spotted a lot of different kind of birds there. I was so involved in finding my solitude there that I literally forgot that it was HOLI. Some of my friends started playing with dry colours and then we all started playing. We celebrated Holi with the local children there and a foreigner couple who was staying there in the camp.

Then we left for local sightseeing.

Kamalabari and Auniati Satra:-

There are a lot of satras in Majuli. They are actually linked with the ancient mythological tales of emperors who ruled there. To be frank they were not much more than a temple. But yes there were really interesting museums in these satras. And the priests there were so humble that were excited to show the belongings of those satras such as an old golden jug, coins, beautiful artifacts and a lot more. While visiting these satras, we were totally soaked in the colours of Holi. Actually we travelled that whole day in colourful condition.

After visiting satras, we went to visit a really interesting place which was the house of an artist who used to make masks for stage plays depicting Ramayan, Mahabharat and a lot more.

The Mask maker’s House:-

It was an old house with an open veranda at the entrance. The artist was sitting there with his fellow students. He also taught this art of mask making to the interested students there. We greeted him and then one of his students took us to a room full of masks. All of us sat on a carpet and the student started describing different masks. He wore those masks and showed us a glimpse of the actual role played with that mask. The artist and some of his students were multi-talented. Apart from mask masking art, they were professionals in playing musical instruments such as harmonium, flute and a few Assamese folk instruments. Painting was also a part of their interest.

So we were spectator for some time. Then I requested them to allow us to wear those masks. They agreed and we were then again the craziest people in the world. Hanuman, shoorpanakha, garuda, mohini, mahishasur, hidimba…. All of us were literally playing these roles and going mad. There were lots of laughter and we recorded some videos there of our performances. Then we returned back to the happy home. We had our traditional lunch there. We went for the ferry after lunch. Again we sat on the top of the ferry and came back to Jorhat. We arranged our transportation from Jorhat to Dibrugarh and reached Dibrugarh by the evening.

We left Majuli remembering all the fun moments there. This was something which cannot be taken away from us. One more chapter was added to the “Things you remember when you get old” list. One fantasy of escaping the dull daily life and exploring an island was lived. The lovely interactions in missing village, the childhood games and cartwheels in the lawn of happy home, the mask performances, the experience sharing session, the ferry ride…… will always be a part of our colorful trip to Majuli.

Tips for the Travellers:-

• Before I went, I read somewhere on internet that rental motorbikes and bicycles are easily available in Majuli. I tried to find but couldn’t find any. If you are lucky then you can get them arranged by your hotel owner.
• Go there with a personal or hired vehicle. This will save you a lot of time. Just make sure your driver is aware about tourist spots in Majuli.
• Another good option to stay in Majuli similar to Eco-Camp Me:Po Okum (Happy house) is La Maison de Ananda. I would personally recommend to stay in bamboo huts.
• The last ferry from Majuli is at 3 PM. Plan your trip accordingly.
• Don’t miss the traditional food in Majuli.

How to Reach Majuli Island?

The most common way to reach Manjuli Island is by Jorhat. From the Nimihat Ghat in Jorhat, take a ferry ride that leaves according to different prefixed schedules. Nimihat Ghat is a river port from where motor boats or ferries operate. It would take around one hour to reach the island. On the banks of Manjuli, there are multiple ports; the most popular of all is Kamlabari Ghat where you will most probably end up landing. From the ghat, share cabs and buses operate that will take you further inside the island.
