Everett Meredith reopens after 2 years without a home

Jarek Rutz August 31, 2022 Headlines , Education

everett meredith middle school tour

After two years in a school that wasn’t their own, the Everett Meredith Middle School community has a place to call home.

The Crusaders of Everett Meredith Middle School finally have a home to call their own.

For the past two years, they’ve moved around as the Appoquinimink School District destroyed the original 1929 building and rebuilt it in the same location on Broad Street in Middletown.

Wednesday at 6 p.m. officials will cut the ribbon to celebrate the school opening this fall, a long anticipated day as students, former students, teachers, parents and town residents have followed the construction.

“It feels like this great exhale, like we’re home and can finally unpack,” said Evangeline Thornton, an English teacher at Everett Meredith.

The school was built after a 2016 referendum authorized slightly higher taxes to build more schools.

The state contributed $43.1 million to tear down the old building and replace it with a modern, open-designed school. The local contribution was $14.4 million.

“We needed the new building because the MOT (Middletown, Odessa, Townsend) area in general has been massively expanding, which is a great challenge to have,” said Beth Everett, principal of the middle school.

The community seems amped up to see the doors open the 504 South Broad school named for a former teacher.

“We’re excited to welcome all of our students and families back to really build that family feel here in our own building,” Everett said.

For 2020 and 2021, Odessa High School served as a “swing-school.”

Jennifer Atkinson started teaching at Everett Meredith while it was in its temporary home.

Now entering her second year, the science teacher is ecstatic for her classroom to be permanent.

“It was a challenge in the temporary school,” she said.  “You couldn’t create, you couldn’t decorate the classroom, because it was all short-term. You couldn’t make it your own space.”

She said she already has a vision for her new space.

“I can’t wait to make this my home,” she said.

The original school was built more than 100 years ago and needed both the technology and the overall environment to be modernized, Everett said.

The new building is surrounded by residential neighborhoods, and Everett said, making it a focus of the community.

“So many students are right next door and walk to and from school every day,” she said.

The principal said there were many benefits to sharing a building with another school, such as more teacher support and collaborative efforts with plays and concerts, but she’s happy to be coming home.

Thornton said that for two years it felt like the teachers and students were guests in someone else’s home.

“There’s so much excitement,” she said. “I feel like since I’ve been here there’s been so much transition so now I really feel like I can really make this classroom and this school my home.”

RELATED STORY: Schools start Tuesday, and ‘kids can be kids’ again

Thornton said she’s most excited to start establishing a culture at this brand new building.

The school offers a lot of features common to many new schools today such as an open lay-out and study hubs.

But Meredith also offers unique spaces that pay homage to the school’s rich history.

For example, one of the wings contains a hallway with a section that has bricks, molding and the wood floor panels of the original school.

Other features at Everett Meredith:

  • Grade-level classrooms organized around a learning common s that includes flexible work areas and instructional space
  • A related arts wing that follows an old-school light bulb sign reading “Everett Theatre”, a STEM workspace, an art room and an agriculture classroom with adjacent outdoor space and planting beds
  • A skill-builders classroom offering specialized support for learners with social/emotional needs
  • A learning stair that can serve as an impromptu gathering place and learning space adjacent to the cafeteria. The steps are painted with one-word education concepts: engagement, creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking.
  • A  cafeteria with a view of the landscaped courtyard and food-court style serving lines
  • A full-size gymnasium with bleacher seating for 400
  • A 500-seat auditorium
  • Band, chorus and orchestra rehearsal room s connecting to instrument storage, a music office and practice rooms
  • A history wall that celebrates the original Middletown School and includes artifacts from that building such as original brickwork, the datestone, cast stone window surround and heart pine wood flooring
  • A “one-touch” studio for recording student presentations

History of Everett Meredith

The school first opened its doors more than a century ago under the name of Middletown School.

Back then, the school served grades one through 12 with 434 students and 17 staff members.

Now, it has roughly 1,000 students throughout grades six to eight.

Everett Meredith was a teacher who first got his taste of Delaware education working in the Caesar Rodney School District in the 1940s.

He lived the rest of his life in Middletown, where he worked as an educator and administrator, and also was a community leader.

According to Lilian Miles, the district public information officer, the Meredith family has left its mark on Delaware education, with dozens of family members teaching and serving in First State schools.

The school was named for Meredith after Louise Atwell, a longtime secretary for the school, along with graduates of Meredith’s classes, petitioned to change the name to Everett Meredith Middle School.

The name officially changed in 2002, and now even more generations of Middletown students will walk through its doors.

MIDDLETOWN — The grand opening of Everett Meredith Middle School will take place Wednesday, over two years after the demolition of its original building.

Since 2020, Everett Meredith operated within Odessa High School, while construction took place. The original building was more than 100 years old.

The program is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony in the auditorium. At its conclusion, sixth graders and their families will begin an open house to meet their teachers and discuss classes and expectations for the school year. Similar events will be held for seventh and eighth grade families next month.

The new school will feature a related-arts wing with a STEM workspace, a skill-builders classroom to provide students with specialized support, a learning commons with flexible work areas, a large food court-style cafeteria, a full-size gymnasium and a 500-seat auditorium.

A 10-minute video tour of the school, narrated by Principal Beth Everett, is now available here .

PHOTOS FROM OUR BEAM TOPPING CEREMONY AT EVERETT MEREDITH MIDDLE SCHOOL

On September 27, 2021, we celebrated a construction milestone when the last structural steel beam was lifted into place at the new Everett Meredith Middle School. Next Fall, our 21st Century school will be ready to open its doors to new generations of learners. The building replaces the facility that originally stood on this site. During a proud 90+ year history, it served as the original Middletown High before transitioning to a Middle School facility. Shortly thereafter, a community petition led school officials to rename the building after beloved former history teacher and administrator Everett Meredith, who devoted his career to the education of children. We were proud to have members of the Meredith Family join us at the celebration. Open this story for an album with 200+ photos from the event. You'll recognize the School Board, Superintendent, District Leaders, MMS Building Administrators, local elected officials, volunteers and construction partners. Please note: the fir "tree" attached to the beam is part of the tradition and meant to bring good luck.

Meredith Middle School

A hard worker from the start, Everett Meredith entered Western Maryland College in Westminster, Maryland. In college he studied his favorite subject, history. Mr. Meredith was independent and determined to succeed in life.

He supported his dream to learn by becoming an aluminum utensil salesman. As a dedicated salesman, he used his aluminum pots and pans to cook a meal for his appreciative clients at their house. His specialties were slow roasts and stews. He was a salesman that you could not refuse.

He graduated from college in 1930. He left his school as a fair, dedicated, open-minded, young professional. He made it a point to encourage people to become curious about the world around them.

After graduation Meredith accepted his first teaching positioning in East New Market, Maryland, just outside of Cambridge. His first teaching position in Delaware was within the Caesar Rodney School District. It was not until 1948 that Meredith began his life long tenure in Middletown as an educator and administrator.

During his time as an educator, Meredith sought to create an interesting, challenging, and accountable classroom. He expected his students to work hard, complete their homework, pay attention to details, and respect others. In addition, he taught and expected students to uncover truths, seek knowledge, and overwhelm themselves with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

In his lifetime Meredith was a well-known community leader, respected by everyone in the community. He had the ability to communicate, relate, and mediate with all people. We are honored to have his name as that of our school.

Everett Meredith Middle Grand Opening Tour Added a year ago • Share this video Copy this URL:   Embed code: Change dimensions Shrink player For the past two years, the EMMS learning community has operated as a school-within-a-school at Odessa High in order to give us time to replace their outdated (100-year old) facility with a state-of-the-art building. On Wednesday, August 31, 2022 we will celebrate the grand opening of the NEW Everett Meredith Middle School with a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony in the auditorium. Grade 6 families are an important part of the evening. After the ceremony concludes, they'll exit the auditorium to begin an Open House event that will provide an opportunity to meet and greet their teachers, talk about classes, schedules, the school culture and more. (Grade 7 and 8 families will attend similar events later in the month.) We know many people are curious to see inside, but won't be able to join us for the ceremony. Our video tour, narrated by EMMS Principal Beth Everett, offers a look at the spaces that define our new school and includes messages from several teachers and educational leaders. Loading... At 12:14 on February 7, Middletown High School will post a special message to Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin. The timing is symbolic. 12 is the number Chris wore when he was a standout player for the Middletown Cavaliers. 14 is his current number with the Buccaneers. Coaches and staff at his alma mater will be sending a special message to Chris in advance of his Super Bowl appearance later today. Good luck, Chris. You've earned this.

The Fall 2021 opening of Cantwell’s Bridge Middle signals the beginning of our new feeder pattern for grades 6-8. The school shares an innovative Performing Arts Center with Odessa High as well as its Library Media Center with filming/media capabilities. Dedicated STEM and science labs; a gymnasium; band, orchestra and chorus classrooms; art room; music practice rooms; a business classroom and student-operated store; as well as flexible learning spaces offer opportunities for students to explore their interests before selecting a pathway (area of concentration) in high school. Middle School students who demonstrate readiness can participate in advanced-level study at the high school. Take a tour with charismatic principal Nick Hoover and then meet key members of the staff leadership team.

In March, we celebrated Music In Our Schools Month. Elementary Schools kicked off the celebration with a Masked Singer Competition in every building. Upper-level students were given the opportunity to submit “masked” videos to their music teachers each week. The entire building voted on their favorite performances and top performers moved on each week until a winner was announced. Performers remained anonymous until the finale, to allow even the shyest of our students to live out their performance dreams! The winners from each school are now going head-to-head for your votes. On May 21, 2022, we will celebrate all our winners with a ceremony held at 1:00 pm during the Instrument Walk-About Event at AHS. Please watch the video with your family and vote for your favorite performer using the QR code at the end of the video. One vote per email will be counted and voting closes on Thursday May 19th at 9pm. All identities and schools will remain anonymous until the award ceremony. Good luck to all the performers!

Last year, Silver Lake's entire learning community relocated for one year to a new home so that their school could undergo a massive expansion and renovation. In 2021, Appoquinimink celebrates the first group of students to graduate from elementary school after participating for six full years (grades K-5) in the Immersion Language Program. Join us for a tour inside 5th grade immersion classrooms where you'll see instruction happening and hear from students, parents and educators about the dual language learning experience. Our special guest is Former Delaware Governor Jack Markell. One of language immersion's biggest champions, he was responsible for introducing the program to the Delaware and brings expert insight about where we are today and where we're headed. Did you know? Next fall, this same group of students is transitioning to middle school where they'll continue their studies in an immersion setting. Meredith (Everett) Middle School Reviews

First look: Appo's Everett Meredith Middle School reopens after 2 years of reconstruction

everett meredith middle school tour

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the total cost of the Everett Meredith Middle School renovation project.

For the Appoquinimink School District community, September marks more than a new academic year. It’s the return of Everett Meredith staff and students to their home turf after two years of reconstruction.

Since 2020, Everett Meredith Middle School students and staff have been relocated to other schools around the district during the rebuilding of their original campus, which first opened in 1929.

“We’re just looking forward to coming home. I keep saying, ‘504 South Broad, we’re home,'” said Beth Everett, principal of EMMS. “It feels amazing.”

Though the halls of the Middletown school were empty on Tuesday, the sounds of construction crews finishing up last-minute jobs echoed through the building in preparation for the first day of school.

Shiny patterned floors gave way to open spaces for collaborative learning. Chairs and walls in various shades of blue, a nod to the school’s colors, filled the building. And natural light washed the central atrium in a golden, midday glow.

The cafeteria boasted new learning stairs, a place where students can hang out or reflect on the school’s pillars of learning emblazoned on the steps. Across the lunchroom, an Everett Theatre sign hangs above the walkway, a gift from Middletown’s 100-year-old theater a few blocks away on Main Street.

“I love this building. This building is my home. Meredith is my family,” said Olivia Suchanec, an instructional coach and social studies department chair.

Suchanec has been a staff member there for 17 years. Her growth has coincided with that of the school, and the community it has fostered is what keeps her coming back year after year.

“That’s what’s so great about this town. It’s big but it’s small,” she said.

Just up the hall, sixth grade social studies teacher Brian Conway, also in his 17th year, said he's grateful for the opportunity to teach at a building of this caliber.

“I think it’s amazing. I never thought I’d be in a new school,” he said. “It’s important what they’ve done. We’re fortunate. Many teachers don’t have a fraction of what we do.”

Other new additions include a library media center overlooking Broad Street, rehearsal rooms for band, chorus and orchestra, a 500-seat auditorium and an arts wing with an art room, a STEM workspace and an agriculture classroom.

And, it wouldn’t be an updated Everett Meredith without something for the mascot, too.

The crusaders have even added new gleaming gold shoulder pads to the armor of their trademark mascot.

The school renovation had a total cost of $57.5 million, with $43.1 million covered by the state and $14.4 million allocated locally. For projects like these, both portions vary by district and are established by the Department of Education, said Eric Loftus, director of finance for the Appoquinimink School District.

On Wednesday, the school will have a dedication ceremony in the auditorium at 6 p.m. Following the event, an open house for sixth grade students and families will be held. They will have the opportunity to meet staff, discuss classes and schedules and learn about anything else related to the coming school year.

Seventh and eighth grade students and their families will have a separate event in early September.

Even with all the new additions, staff relish the familiar feeling of the building and the Everett Meredith charm it still carries.

“It seems like a huge school, but the way it’s laid out, it makes it feel very homey, comfortable,” Conway said. “I’m looking forward to the kids taking ownership of it. Hopefully feeling as proud of it as we do as teachers.”

As an ode to the far-reaching history of Everett Meredith, a history wall was placed in the hallway outside the gymnasium. It holds bricks engraved with names, brief inscriptions and dates belonging to former members of the EMMS community.

Next to the wall are preserved pieces of the original building, including heart pinewood flooring, the 1929 datestone from the school’s opening year – when it was formerly known as Middletown School – and the cast stone window surround.

“I went through the whole transition and to come back, I was so excited,” said Dan Sullivan, assistant principal and former teacher at Everett Meredith. “The location is just so important because it feels like we’re in the middle of the community.”

Despite all the newness, Sullivan says the new building doesn’t feel sterile and already has that lived-in feeling.

For a community that eagerly awaited the completion of the building for two years, finally getting to open the doors of Everett Meredith Middle School in just under a week feels just like it always has − like home.

“Even though they rebuilt it, it still feels like old Meredith,” Suchanec said. “It always has that nostalgic feeling.”
