Everything to Know About Cruise Cabin Bathrooms

What’s one place where you might spend a time on a cruise ship, yet no one talks about it? That’s right. The bathroom.

Every cabin has a bathroom built into the room, just like you would see in a hotel room. However, as you would expect, everything that you need comes at a much smaller scale.

Your cruise ship bathroom will have a commode (obviously), sink, counter space, storage, and a stand-up shower. Most showers also include a small clothesline for drying swimsuits.

To give you an idea of what you can expect, we’ve included a number of pictures of different cabin bathrooms below.

How large is the average bathroom on a cruise ship?

Including all the space — including the area taken up by cabinets, counters, and the shower — a typical bathroom is around 25-30 square feet. Considering everything in the room, however, the usable space is considerably smaller.

You’ll often have a small sink with about 2-3 feet of counter space surrounding it. The shower is stand-up only (no bathtubs in most rooms!), with enough room to turn around, but often not enough to bend over. So if you need to scrub your feet or shave your legs, you could have some difficulty.

There’s no argument that the typical cruise bathroom is small. It’s not large enough, for example, for two people to get ready for the day at the same time. If you rent a nice room such as a suite, then you can expect more bathroom space. 

Are there electrical plugs in the bathroom?

You might have heard rumors that there aren’t many electrical outlets in a cruise cabin. It’s true, and one reason we suggest people bring along an outlet adapter to give you more plugs.

The same limited outlet space applies to bathrooms, too. In fact, we have been in cabins where there isn’t an outlet available. If you need to do things like use a curler or a flat-iron, you have to do so near the outlet in the main part of the cabin.

Other bathrooms do have outlets, but you need to search for them. They typically aren’t near the counter where you would expect. Often they are overheard, built into the light.

Is there a vent for odors?

Many of us are used to having a switch-operated vent in our bathroom to remove smells and also provide some white noise. Unfortunately, cruise ships don’t have this sort of vent. Instead, there is a small vent that moves air constantly but there’s no control for it. 

That’s why it’s a good thing to travel with a companion that you are comfortable with. These vents don’t do much so whoever else is in the cabin will hear — and smell — anything that goes on on the bathroom.

If you are self-conscious, you can always run some water or turn up the TV to drown out some of the noise. As for smells, those with a balcony can open the door to let in some fresh air or bring along some air freshener. We’ve heard good things about Poo-pourri, a spray that you put into the toilet before you go . The spray forms a layer over the water, helping to keep smells from escaping.

How big is the shower on a cruise?

First things first, if you’re expecting a bathtub, then don’t be surprised. The vast majority of cruise bathrooms come with only a stand-up shower. Some high-end suites do have bathtubs, but you’ll have to pay up for that sort of luxury.

Instead, you’ll have a shower (often round) that’s just a couple of feet wide. If you raise your arms to the side of your body, your elbows will likely hit the sides of the shower. That can make things a challenge to clean yourself. This is especially if you are a little bit bigger or if you have to bend over a lot to shave your legs, etc.

The good news? There is still plenty of room to turn around and you can expect your shower will be a mounted spray wand with a hose attached. That way, you can just take down the wand and use it to spray wherever you need, instead of trying to contort yourself in a tiny shower.

Do cruise bathrooms have a clothesline?

One feature you’ll notice inside of the shower is a round cylinder attached to the wall. This is the clothesline. Simply pull the catch in the middle out and attach it to the holder on the other side of the shower. 

Here you can hang a couple of swimsuits. One thing to know is that given the lack of air movement, it takes a long time for things to dry here. Instead, it is more of a spot just to store wet clothes instead of actually drying them out. 

Can I drink the water from the bathroom faucet?

When you cruise, getting a drink of water is surprisingly difficult. There aren’t water fountains on ships. If you want a drink, you’ll need to head to the buffet or a bar. Another smart move is order bottles of water to be delivered to your room so there’s always something to drink.

But what about drinking from the bathroom faucet? Yes, you can do it. In fact, there are normally glasses in the bathroom. To be honest, we prefer having water from elsewhere but in a pinch, have drank from the tap.

Is there a hair dryer?

Your cabin will come with a hair dryer, so that’s one less thing you have to pack. But you should know it won’t be in the bathroom. Cruise cabins typically have hair dryers that are in the drawer of the vanity in the main part of the cabin. The dryers are “built-in” so they don’t take up any plug space. You just have to dry your hair in this spot instead of the bathroom.

Other things to know about cruise bathrooms

The toilet paper is thin . As you might expect, most mass market cruise lines save money by using extremely thin toilet tissue. If you have a sensitive tush, you can always bring your own paper (just don’t flush it as it may not work well with the ship’s waste system).

The commode flushes differently . Used to a regular toilet where the water spins? Toilets on cruise ships are more like the “airplane” style that use less water and have a strong “whoosh” when you press the button to flush. If you use the bathroom in the middle of the night, you will likely wake up your cabin mate when you flush.

Remember that you can fog up an entire cabin with steamy showers . Like long hot showers? With little venting in the bathroom, there is nowhere for all that steam and humidity to go. You run the risk of making the entire cabin feel damp for hours afterward. Keep the showers short or not as hot and steamy.

For those of you about to enjoy your first sea cruise, the details of the bathroom in your cabin may be the last thing on your mind. The weather, the onboard entertainment, and the fun amenities on offer are far more important factors to consider as you embark on your adventure.

While even the smallest cabin will have its own private bathroom, it won’t be as user-friendly as your en-suite bathroom at home, so we’d like to fill you in on what you need to know about bathrooms on cruise ships.

An Overview Of What You Need To Know About Bathrooms On Cruise Ships

Unless you’ve booked a suite, the average cabin on a cruise ship is small. Inside cabins run about 167 square feet on average, while outer cabins average a little more, at 180 square feet. That doesn’t leave much space for a bathroom – and in fact, “bathroom” is a misnomer because usually there’s no actual bathtub. Most cabins will have just a curtained-off shower, a toilet, and a basin.

If you’re a large person or just hate the thought of a tiny bathroom, you would be well advised to book a suite-class cabin rather than a regular stateroom , some of which have full bathrooms. Suites generally are more spacious, offering a greater level of comfort. You’ll pay for the privilege of having more space, but it may well be worth it.

Typical Sizes Of Cruise Ship Bathrooms 

The average size of bathrooms on cruise ships is 25 to 30 square feet, which includes the shower, toilet, washbasin cabinet, and storage space. If you deduct the ten square feet for the shower, three or four square feet for the basin, and four or five square feet for the toilet, it leaves very little space for a person and certainly not enough for two.  

Disney Cruise Line cabins mostly have split bathrooms, with a commode room separate from the shower room. However, the combined size is still around thirty square feet, so both rooms are tiny. It is handy to have a separate toilet, but many people prefer the combined bathroom as it is just a bit more spacious.

What you need to know about bathrooms on cruise ships is most ships have accessible cabins designed for easy wheelchair movement, and the bathrooms in these cabins are much more spacious. The cruise line will gladly accommodate you if you have a medical certificate confirming your disability. For able-bodied cruisers, it may be worth enquiring about the availability of an accessible cabin. If they haven’t been allocated, you may be lucky enough to get one. 

Typical Amenities Inside Cruise Bathrooms

Bathrooms on cruise ships are not luxurious, but they are efficient units. Apart from the standard bathroom fittings of shower, toilet, and basin, the typical cruise bathroom will provide you with most items you’d find in a hotel bathroom or at home. 

Hygiene Products

What you need to know about bathrooms on cruise ships is they will all have liquid soap and shampoo , usually in wall-mounted dispensers, for convenience and space-saving. Most cruise lines also have basic hygiene products in the bathroom, including body lotion, and body wash. Sometimes the body wash will double as shampoo.

Bath towels, wash clothes and hand towels are provided by the cruise line for personal use in your cabin. Your bathroom towels will be refreshed several times throughout the day as needed.

Shower Vs. Tub

In a typical cabin, there will be a curtained shower section, but there are tubs in most suites if you are prepared to upgrade. Also, some suite class staterooms will have a second powder room in addition to a bathroom.

On Disney Cruise ships , the bathrooms have a separate toilet section and the other half contains either a shower or a small tub.

Electrical Outlets

Most bathrooms have outlets, although they may be awkwardly located near the light. However, because they are wired for low amperage, you can’t use a hairdryer or flatiron (anything in fact with a heating element) from this outlet. (Note: Although you will typically find a hair dryer in your cabin , you will not find a travel iron .)

The outlets in the cabin are suitable for those appliances but don’t plug in anything but your shaver in the bathroom.

If you have chargers, a fan, a hairdryer, and other electrical appliances, take an outlet extender so that you are able to make better use of the limited number of outlets.

Storage 

Unfortunately, in such a small space, there is only enough storage for the essentials. There are short shelves on each side of the mirror to carry toothbrushes, a few toiletries, a countertop, and possibly a cabinet under the basin.

You may well have additional hygiene products that you use daily. If you want extra storage space in your cruise ship bathroom, a popular cruise cabin hack is to bring an over-the-door shoe organizer.

Cruise Ship Toilets And Water

It’s pretty ingenious how modern engineering has solved the problem of dealing with the “black water” from toilets and the “gray water” from showers and basins in bathrooms on cruise ships. 

• The waste matter (to use a  polite term) from the toilet is not flushed away with water but drawn out by suction and sent to the ship’s inboard treatment plant .
• At the treatment plant, it is filtered to remove any objects that cannot be treated and then aerated to speed up the biodegrading process.
•  After this, it is sent to a settling tank to remove any undissolved solids before the water is sterilized using UV light. Once sterilized, it is returned to the ocean.  

Most of the water on board is drawn from the sea and then put through an onboard desalination process, which involves either reverse osmosis or evaporation to produce clean, potable water for use in showers, laundries, and the kitchen.

 Some water is also brought on board and stored. The desalinated water is treated further by a process known as mineralization before being made available for drinking.

Cruise Toilet Vs. Airplane Toilet

The toilet area in a cruise ship bathroom is very much the same size as you’ll find on an aircraft – just big enough! Both have a vacuum flushing system , but on an airplane, there is a liquid chemical that is used in the flushing process. On a cruise ship where there are far more people , and they’re on board for days rather than hours, no water is used to flush the toilet as it is a scarce commodity.

Yes, you’ll find numerous restrooms and toilets on all cruise ships as passengers can’t be expected to run to their cabins every time nature calls

Where Are They Located?

• There are restrooms near the restaurants, bars, and entertainment areas on board, and the toilets are small but very usable.
• The locker rooms at the gym or spa also have shower facilities, some of which are much bigger than your cabin bathroom.   

Making The Best Use Of Your Cruise Ship Bathroom

While it’s not going to be as comfortable as home, there are several things you can do to make your cruise bathroom work for you. Because the bathrooms on cruise ships are so tiny, only essential items should be included in your luggage so that you can avoid unnecessary and annoying clutter.

What To Bring

• While some products are supplied in bathrooms on cruise ships, you will undoubtedly want to bring some toiletries with you. The way to do this is to bring only what you need for your time on board, using small plastic dispensers or bottles that can be reliably sealed.
• Bring additional means of storage. A good tip we’ve seen is to use a hanging shoe organizer , one with numerous pockets that hangs over a door, to store your everyday bathroom toiletries, jewelry, medication, toothbrush, etc., that would otherwise clutter up the limited shelf space. You can also bring suction or magnetic hooks (yes, the cabin walls are magnetic!) to carry light clothing items, towels, and facecloths while drying.

• Pack an air freshener . The extractor in a bathroom is only designed to remove twenty percent of the air every hour, so it’s not going to eliminate the smells that will inevitably make the tiny bathroom a no-go zone. A good air freshener sprayed before the time will work, as will a hanging car fresh-air dispenser that you can hang up in the cabin.  
• Depending on how long you will be on board, you may need to do some laundry on your cruise in the bathroom basin or shower. Take some detergent sink-packs with you for this purpose, and possibly a portable clothesline that you can hang in the shower (check with your cruise line if this is supplied).
• A trip to the bathroom in the middle of the night can be hazardous if you don’t turn on the light. Consider packing a small glow lamp or night light to avoid disturbing the rest of your cabin.
• This one is for parents who are cruising with babies – if you’re confident enough to take a cruise with an infant, pack a very small inflatable pool , which will fit in the shower and allow you to bath baby and then stow it away (the bath that is, not the baby).
• Because irons and steamers are not allowed on board because of fire risk, pack an anti-wrinkle spray to use before hanging your item of clothing in the shower, where steam will also help to remove creases.    

What To Leave At Home

• There’s no reason to pack towels -they are supplied by the cruise line and changed daily and sometimes even twice daily. Beach towels to use at the pool are provided on request and need to be returned after use.
• Hairdryers are supplied by the cruise line, so don’t pack yours. Although the electrical points in the bathroom are not suitable for hairdryers (the wattage is too low), they can be used in the cabin.
• Soap and shampoo are always supplied , so unless you have a brand that you find irreplaceable, don’t pack these items. Body lotion, shower gel, and conditioner are also in the bathrooms of most cruise liners, but to be safe, check with the line when booking your vacation.

You do not have to leave your cabin to use the bathroom, and you won’t have to share a bathroom.

As far as I can tell, the bathroom in balcony cabins and inside cabins on a Princess cruise ship are the same.

They were basically all the same on the cruise ships I was on anyway!

I have been on the Majestic Princess (inside cabin), Sapphire Princess (balcony cabin), and Diamond Princess (balcony cabin).

Are there public bathrooms on cruise ships?

So if you’re out and about around the cruise ship and need to go to the bathroom, you don’t need to walk all the way back to your cabin.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

Do cruise ships have enough lifeboats for everyone?

It’s a question that comes to many cruisers’ minds, especially if they’re hesitant about sailing across oceans and seas, far from land.

You can rest assured that cruise lines have many safety systems in place in the rare instance that a major emergency occurs at sea. Among these systems are, of course, the brightly colored lifeboats that you’ll see lining the sides of your ship. Not only are they there to carry passengers to safety if the ship needs to be abandoned, but they’re also used as tender boats in a port where the ship can’t dock at a pier.

Here are the top things to know about cruise ship lifeboats, so you’ll feel safe and confident when heading out on your next voyage.

What does a lifeboat look like?

Lifeboats are orange or yellow watercraft that you’ll find lining the sides of the ship. You’ll find two main types of lifeboats on many cruise ships: enclosed lifeboats and lifeboat tenders. The majority of cruise ship lifeboats are enclosed lifeboats, which are tough and built with superior watertight integrity, with the ability to easily right themselves if tossed around by rough waves.

Lifeboat tenders are partially enclosed and are designed for two main functions: to serve as a lifeboat if needed and to ferry guests from the ship to the shore during a port call where the vessel can’t dock. Lifeboat tenders are more expensive to maintain than traditional lifeboats, so cruise ships will usually have just enough lifeboat tenders to operate port tender service while the rest are the standard enclosed lifeboats.

The interior of a lifeboat includes rows of seating, which may or may not have a seatback. A steering area with windows and a hatch is located toward the top of the vessel. According to lifeboat manufacturer Fassmer, enclosed lifeboats have no windows besides those in the steering area, while lifeboat tenders have windows for viewing the surroundings from the seats. These windows do not open.

Fun fact: When Disney Cruise Line launched in the ‘90s, regulations required all cruise ship lifeboats to be orange. However, Disney wanted the exteriors of its ships to match the colors of Mickey Mouse, so it requested an exemption to paint its lifeboats yellow to match Mickey’s shoes.

The U.S. Coast Guard granted the unique request, and the lifeboats were painted in Mickey’s yellow, Pantone 99, which is a patented color that only Disney can use. Since then, other lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Costa Cruises , have painted their lifeboats yellow.

What’s the typical capacity of cruise ship lifeboats?

The maximum capacity of a cruise ship lifeboat is 150 people, according to the International Maritime Organization’s International Life-Saving Appliance Code. Most cruise ships have lifeboats that can hold this maximum number of passengers because it is easier, more cost-effective and takes up less space to have fewer large lifeboats instead of a greater number of smaller ones.

Despite the LSA’s 150-person capacity limit for lifeboats, an exception allows for larger lifeboats on some of the world’s largest cruise ships.

Royal Caribbean’s massive Oasis of the Seas, which holds 8,880 passengers and crew members in total, was the first ship to use 370-person CRV55 catamaran lifeboats (or “rescue vessels”), designed and built by marine life-saving equipment company Umoe Schat-Harding. The enclosed vessels are unique in that they can be lowered directly from their storage position on the ship into the water (no moving outward needed), and passengers can board on two levels simultaneously, reducing the loading time. Their catamaran-style hull increases stability, while twin diesel engines and twin propellers allow these “mega” lifeboats to move at speeds of up to 6 knots.

On a cruise ship, there must be enough lifeboats to accommodate 37.5% of passengers and crew members on either side (75% total), according to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea. What happens to the other 25%? This leads us to our next question.

Do cruise ships carry inflatable life rafts?

The remaining 25% of passengers that can’t be accommodated in the traditional lifeboats can use cruise ship inflatable life rafts. These are generally designated for crew members, while guests will board the lifeboats first — though rafts can also be used for guests if necessary.

Collapsible cruise ship life rafts are stored in fiberglass canisters and usually utilize a high-pressure gas to automatically inflate once deployed. While lifeboats have motors, life rafts do not. They do, however, have oars. Ships may also carry rigid, noninflatable life rafts, but they aren’t as common for large cruise vessels.

On newer cruise ships, life rafts may be used with a Marine Evacuation System, which utilizes a fully enclosed inflatable spiral slide to transfer passengers from the embarkation deck to an automatically inflated raft in the water.

If some lifeboats become damaged or can’t be lowered during an emergency, cruise ships have extra life rafts to pick up the slack. SOLAS requires that there are enough additional life rafts for 25% of the ship’s capacity. Cruise ships have also been designed to allow lifeboats and life rafts to deploy even if the ship is listing up to 20 degrees.

Where are lifeboats located on cruise ships?

Lifeboats are located outside on both sides of the cruise ship, typically stored on or just above one of the middle decks with an outdoor promenade so passengers can easily board them. This spot is ideal because it’s a central location for both the upper- and lower-deck cabins, as well as many public indoor and outdoor venues and amenities.

It also works because it keeps the lifeboats high enough out of the water that they won’t be in the way when the ship docks and most likely won’t be affected by rough waves. On the flip side, it keeps them low enough that they don’t have to be lowered the entire height of the ship (plus, no one wants a lifeboat view from the lido pool or their upper-deck suite).

In an emergency, passengers should not head directly to the lifeboats. Instead, every cabin is assigned an assembly station, where they will meet with crew members and be escorted to a lifeboat if an evacuation is deemed necessary. Passengers must attend a muster drill to identify their assembly station and learn about their ship’s emergency procedures. These drills must take place before a cruise ship can set sail.

What can be found on a lifeboat?

While this list is not exhaustive, here’s most of what you’ll find on a cruise ship lifeboat, according to the LSA:

• Enough fuel to travel at 6 knots for at least a full day (24 hours)
• 48 hours’ worth of anti-seasickness medication per person
• 2 seasickness bags per person
• 3 liters of fresh water per person
• 2,390 calories’ worth of food rations per person
• Life jackets
• Enough thermal protective aid suits for 10% of the lifeboat’s capacity
• Three can openers
• First aid supplies
• Buoyant oars
• Illuminated compass
• Hand and parachute flares
• Smoke signals
• Survival manual
• One whistle
• One jackknife
• One searchlight that can work continuously for at least three hours
• Portable fire extinguishing equipment
• Fishing gear
• Tools to repair the engine

Do lifeboats have bathrooms?

Traditional 150-person lifeboats don’t have toilet facilities, but the 370-person catamaran lifeboats used on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis-class ships do.

What are other requirements for lifeboats on cruise ships?

Cruise ship lifeboats must be made of noncombustible and flame-retardant materials, according to SOLAS. Modern lifeboats are usually made of fiberglass.

All seating on the lifeboat must support a person weighing a minimum of 220 pounds. In addition, the lifeboats and the wires that move them up and down must be strong enough to allow the lifeboat to be lowered at full capacity.

How are lifeboats tested?

During the manufacturing process, lifeboats are tested using water weights, which can mimic the weight of passengers in various spots around the vessel. These water weights are pumped to fill and drain with water remotely. They’re placed in various spots in the lifeboat throughout the testing period to gather data on how the watercraft would handle passenger weight in various locations and scenarios.

Once a lifeboat is delivered to the shipyard for installation on a ship, the inspections and tests do not stop. Throughout the life of the cruise ship, time, weather and use all mean that — like with any type of equipment — things on the lifeboats will degrade and endure wear and tear over time. This is why SOLAS includes requirements for regular lifeboat drills and inspections.

Cruise crew members conduct weekly and monthly lifeboat inspections and undergo periodic training so lifeboat operations stay fresh in their minds.

A more thorough inspection — by either a certified lifeboat technician from an independent company or an inspector from the lifeboat manufacturer itself — occurs annually. According to the International Maritime Organization, this process includes an inspection of these key components:

• The hull is inspected for cracks, damage or other defects.
• The propulsion system, including the engine, is inspected to ensure it’s in good working condition. The cooling, exhaust and fuel systems are also examined.
• The electrical system, including the battery, charging, lighting and communications systems, are checked for defects or malfunctions.
• The maneuvering system is inspected, including the steering mechanism, the rudder and other steering gear.
• Lifeboat equipment, such as life jackets and survival equipment, is examined to ensure it’s in good condition.
• The davit and winch system, including the winch and wire ropes, are checked for defects or damage.
• The lifeboat undergoes a load test to ensure that it can withstand its maximum weight of crew and passengers.

Any equipment or systems found to have defects or deficiencies during the inspection are either repaired or replaced.

Bottom line

The chances of passengers ever experiencing an emergency on a cruise that requires abandoning ship via lifeboats is extremely slim. Still, it’s good to know your ship is outfitted with safety equipment to give you peace of mind when taking your next cruise.
