Amazon FAQs

Thinking about an Amazon trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Amazon Vacation Planning page for in-depth Amazon travel tips.

For many reasons, the best time to visit the Amazon is from June – November. During this time, the Amazon Rainforest experiences its dry season – meaning the water levels are lower, allowing access to forested areas and greater opportunities for land-based exploration excursions. However, it’s important to note that as the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon experiences approximately 250 days of rain a year, spanning all months. Despite having varying seasons, like the “wet” season (December – May), travelers should expect a few hours of light rain at any point in the year. The rain is what continues to keep the rainforests and its rare flora and fauna alive.

Yes, traveling to the Amazon Rainforest is safe! In Brazil’s main center for visiting the Amazon – Manaus, you’ll always have guided activities with expert naturalist guides to help you navigate the jungle. Outside of town make sure you have all recommended vaccinations, according to your doctor and that you take a Malaria prophylaxis. Although along the Rio Negro, where most travelers go, there are very few mosquitoes!

All Amazon lodges and cruises offer jungle walks guided by local professionals to get to know the vegetation. Discover the importance of medicinal plants, spot vibrant macaws and parrots, and learn to identify the calls of rare animals. While listening to the sounds of the animals in the jungle is a common experience, actually spotting the fauna can be difficult. Travelers may consider the Pantanal wetlands for wildlife spotting, as it is less dense than the Amazon. Piranha fishing is also very popular. Local guides can also take you to different areas where other animal species can be seen, such as the pink river dolphins or macaws. Alligator (jacare) spotting at night is one of the most fascinating activities.

In general, the Amazon Jungle is not dangerous for travelers! Animals in the Amazon are not aggressive, as there is plenty of food available. Even the aforementioned “alligator” is a “caiman,” the peaceful cousin of the crocodiles you have heard about from Australia and the Florida Everglades. Your guide will always make you aware of toxic plants or spiders. Most guides are from the local communities, knowing well the healing properties of the plants that surround you. The one element to be aware of is Malaria: there is no vaccination, rather prophylaxis you take before traveling to the Amazon and stop taking as soon as you depart.

If visiting the Amazon in Brazil, you’ll get to the Amazon rainforest mostly by flying into Manaus, or for a more remote experience, by flying into Alta Floresta, with its luxurious lodge, or into Tefé for the most remote experience possible. In Peru, the main access points are Puerto Maldonado, Manu and Iquitos. In Bolivia, it is Rurrenabaque, Coca in Ecuador and Leticia in Colombia.

No – There are different areas with different flora and fauna. The main difference is caused by the altitude. Most of the Brazilian part is at sea-level or only slightly above it, whereas in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the rainforest sits on higher ground. The higher, the less dense the fauna is. Therefore, for example, if you are interested in birding, you would prefer the Peruvian Rainforest, as, due to the fauna being less dense, it is easier to spot birds. The Peruvian Amazon also offers some of the most luxurious river cruise ships such as the Aria. The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest offers travelers a wide range of lodges and cruises. Embark on a large cruise ship such as Hurtigruten or Iberostar, or a small, intimate cruise such as the Tucano. The Ecuadorian Amazon boasts Yasuni National Park, home to millions of species of plants, birds, insects, and mammals.

Typically, you would stay at a lodge or cruise along the river. It depends on what kind of experience interests the traveler(s). The advantage of a lodge is that your stay in the Amazon Rainforest can begin at any time, whereas cruises have set departure dates. While cruises offer plenty of departure dates, it can be challenging to be on a strict schedule. On the other hand, the advantage of a river cruise is that you see a vast extent of the rainforest, with different animals and vegetation, without needing to turn back after each excursion. Cruises also tend to include a stop at local communities where you can experience and learn about the lives of Amazonian locals. Whether you experience the Amazon on a cruise ship or nestled in a lodge, you’re sure to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Amazon Rainforest Tours, Trips & Expeditions

Amazon trips are one of the most intriguing travel choices on earth. Spanning an area of over 2 million square miles across nine different countries and home to some one tenth of the entire world’s plant and animal species, Amazon jungle tours reward intrepid explorers with exciting expeditions into its near impenetrable wilderness, unrivaled and unadulterated adventure , and some of the best wildlife watching in the world. Beneath its colossal kapok trees and mammoth mahoganies, meet its remarkable residents, from culturally rich indigenous tribes and riverine communities, to the natural treasures of its flora and fauna.

Stay in a remote, luxury Amazon lodge under the watchful eye of skulking jaguars, swinging spider monkeys and imperious harpy eagles above, or take a luxurious Amazon river cruise to explore its vast murky waterways, patrolled by giant river otters, playful pink dolphins and infamous piranha. While Peru and Brazil boast 3/4 of the Amazon rainforest combined, don’t rule out Amazon Rainforest tours to the lesser explored Ecuadorian and Bolivian Amazon where you may spot more creatures, but without the creature comforts the other countries afford.

This trip was truly the trip of a lifetime. Jesus really submerges you into the Peruvian culture and the three days you’re there, you are nonstop with activities. Our guide was so knowledgeable and he made the trip. His family grew up in the rainforest so he was able to tell you the history about most things there (the families, the foods, the animals etc). We went during rainy season, and still had a wonderful time. If you’re looking for adventure, meeting wonderful people, and being in nature - this trip is for you!
We had an amazing time on this 3 day Amazon jungle experience. The communication leading up to the tour was excellent and the organisation was thorough. The accommodation at the eco lodge was practical and comfortable with a pool for a dip when needed. The food was above and beyond what we expected with a huge variety offered during the 3 days. We really enjoyed all the activities and were amazed at the number of animals we saw…. giant river otters, beautiful birds, caimans, a range of monkeys, tarantulas and Peruvian sloths (one was in a tree at the lodge!!) Overall I would highly recommend this tour to others who would like to explore the Tambopata River Amazon Jungle.

If you like primitive camping this is the trip for you. Disconnecting was just what I needed to reset. Make sure you bring long pants and plenty of insect spray if mosquitoes bother you. List of animals I saw: caman, river otter family, squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, macaws, cabibarras, piranhas, tucanes and many more. Words can not express how much I loved it.
Tried to cancel my trip today due to the escalating situation in Ecuador. They refused a refund stating that it was "safe" in the areas we were visiting and that they would not refund due to it being my choice to cancel. The representative on the phone assured me that she "talked to a friend in Quito and he says it's fine."This goes against all international news and warnings. Do not travel with them. They are not understanding or reasonable.

Excellent tour Our stay at the Ipinema lodge in the jungle was excellent , every single person was very welcoming Considering we were in the Amazon basin still everything was as promised starting from the airport pickup to the hotel drop off at the end of the tour Good value for money
Initially I was concerned about communication being "quiet", but asking questions helped a lot to get timely response. At the end, kudos to organizers, everything had been running smoothly. We enjoyed the trip a lot, and most of our worries did not happen. Special thanks to our tour guide "Jimmy" - he did a lot to accommodate any last moment changes on the fly, making everybody's trip worry free. In retrospect, we are totally happy about the trip, despite initial worries from my wife :-)

Had a great experience and program (although they changed the order compared to what was shown). My guides were really helpful and spoke English really well (I had Fernando and Luiz). I would recommend staying as long as possible because the weather conditions may not be ideal and as with nature, you need patience and luck in order to see wildlife.
It was a great experience overall. The guides were good. On the 5 day, it's quite an interruption to switch locations - I wonder if this could be made smoother. There is also the issue of illegal mining right alongside the Tambopata lodge, and the lodge is deforesting land itself for a banana plantation - we'd hope there would be ways to resolve this, and really steer the lodge into being a force for good in the environment. It would be ideal to add a few extra clothes lines for guests.

Lovely experience that brings you closer to nature... The night in the jungle in hammocks is super cool, swimming in the amazone and fishing piranha's is superb, the rooms are very basic and the last day the meet&greet with locals was kinda boring... also if you don't speak portugese, you are a little bit left out, our guide spoke englisch but if he explained something it was 5 minutes in portugese and 5 words in Englisch... Also I would have expected to see more animals...
This trip was truly amazing. Our guide Anderson was so knowledgeable about the Amazon and just a great bloke. We had a great bunch of people from all over the world to enjoy the tour with. Food was plentiful and delicious. Sleeping in hammocks in the jungle and catching fish and Caiman were highlights. If you have an adventurous spirit you will love this!
