Jackson topped the book list with a $893,750 advance for her yet-to-be published memoir, followed by Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who reported receiving $340,000 after the court said this week he is working on a “legal memoir.” Justices Neil Gorsuch and Sonia Sotomayor also reported receiving book income.

Jackson said that singer Beyonce Knowles-Carter gave her four concert tickets valued at $3,712. The newest justice also reported two gifts of artwork for her chambers valued at $12,500.

The disclosures come amid increased scrutiny of the nine justices and their financial dealings, fueled in large part by reports that Thomas took lavish vacations and private plane flights funded by Crow.

Thomas’ new filing included an amendment to his 2019 disclosure alluding to a cruise in Indonesia aboard Crow’s yacht and a trip with Crow to an exclusive California retreat for men. Thomas said that Crow had covered the cost of food and lodging for one night in Bali, Indonesia, and at least three nights in Monte Rio, California, home of the Bohemian Grove retreat.

Thomas’ disclosure didn’t mention the cruise itself. Propublica revealed the vacation last year, estimating that the cost of the island-hopping trip could have exceeded $500,000.

Thomas said the listed items had been “inadvertently omitted” from his original 2019 report.

An analysis released this week by the watchdog group Fix the Court concluded that Thomas has received more than $4 million in gifts since his 1991 confirmation. The group’s calculations include rough estimates of the value of flights aboard private planes.

Thomas disclosed receiving photo albums worth $2,000 from Terence and Barbara Giroux. Terence Giroux was executive director of the Horatio Alger Association, a nonprofit that promotes libertarian ideals and gives college scholarships to low-income students. Thomas is an honorary member of the society’s board of directors.

Justice Samuel Alito, as has become his usual practice, received a 90-day extension to file his report.

Sotomayor earned $1,879 from Fred Rogers Productions for a voiceover performance on an episode of the animated TV show Alma’s Way, which is about a Puerto Rican girl from the Bronx and her family.

Three of the justices reported earning extra income from teaching stints at various universities. Gorsuch topped the list with $29,798 in extra income from George Mason University, followed by Kavanaugh, who earned $25,000 from the University of Notre Dame Law School.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett also earned $14,947 from Notre Dame Law School. Barrett is writing a book, but didn’t report any income in 2023 after reporting a year ago that she collected $425,000 in 2022.

Clarence Thomas acknowledges trips with billionaire Harlan Crow in financial disclosure

WASHINGTON — Justice Clarence Thomas reported a 2019 trip to Bali with billionaire friend Harlan Crow in his annual financial disclosures report released Friday — a previously reported instance of the justice's cozy relationship with the real-estate mogul.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson received concert tickets worth $3,700 from pop superstar Beyoncé, according to her report.

She and other justices also announced big advances for books they are working on — with Jackson's by far the largest: $894,000 for her upcoming book, compared to $340,000 for Justice Brett Kavanaugh and $250,000 for Justice Neil Gorsuch. That Kavanaugh — whose confirmation hearing was dominated by accusations of sexual misconduct dating back decades (which he denied) — is writing a book was first reported by Axios on Thursday.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor also announced more than $86,000 in book royalties, plus a more modest $1,879 payment for doing voiceover work for her appearance on the animated children's show "Alma's Way."

The annual reports list such things as outside earnings, assets, gifts and stock holdings. Justices can ask for an extension, which Justice Samuel Alito has done, meaning his report was not available.

Thomas' disclosure of his 2019 trip to Bali as well as another trip to California the same year to the private Bohemian Grove club, both with Crow, correspond to trips that Pro Publica reported on last year in a series of Pulitzer Prize-winning stories about previously undisclosed luxury travel that raised questions about the Supreme Court's commitment to ethics rules.

In his report, Thomas mentions just one night in a Bali hotel with Crow and Crow's wife, although the Pro Publica story chronicled a more extensive trip that included island-hopping on a superyacht. Pro Publica also reported that Thomas flew to Indonesia on Crow's private jet.

Likewise, Thomas reported lodging expenses for the California trip, but not any travel costs. Pro Publica said Thomas had traveled on Crow's private jet to Bohemian Grove.

At the time of the original Pro Publica report, Thomas said that under ethics rules that were in place then, he was not required to report trips on private jets funded by friends. He said the trips were a form of "personal hospitality" that justices did not have to report.

Thomas' report said the two trips had been "inadvertently omitted" from his 2019 report. There was no mention in Thomas' report of any Crow-related trips since the Pro Publica stories were published.

The Supreme Court adopted a new code of conduct last year amid the scrutiny over the justices' ethics, although it has been heavily criticized for lacking any enforcement mechanism. The judiciary has also updated its disclosure rules to make it clear that private jet travel has to be reported.

Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson disclosed receiving concert tickets from pop superstar Beyoncé, one of several notable items revealed Friday in the high court's latest financial disclosure reports.

Jackson valued the four tickets at $3,711.84, according to her annual disclosure form, which covered all of 2023.

It is unclear precisely which show Jackson or her family attended, but Beyoncé played a sold-out show in a thunderstorm in the Washington, D.C., area in August 2023.

The Renaissance Tour concert was attended by Vice President Kamala Harris, who later disclosed a gift of tickets from Beyoncé on her own annual disclosure forms, citing their value at $3,312.

The Beyoncé tickets may have been the flashiest gifts given last year to a member of the nation's most powerful court, but they were not the only ones.

Jackson also disclosed two gifts of art to hang in her judicial chambers, worth a combined $12,500.

The most recent justice to join the high court also disclosed more income from a book than any of her colleagues last year, the filings showed.

Jackson reported that she received a book advance of $893,750 from Penguin Random House, which is publishing her memoir "Lovely One" in September. Jackson is the only justice on the court who was nominated by President Joe Biden .

Justice Clarence Thomas reported that he received a gift of two photo albums valued at $2,000 from Terrence Giroux, who leads the nonprofit Horatio Alger Association, and his wife Barbara.

Thomas also amended his 2019 disclosure report to disclose for the first time two trips that he took as a guest of Harlan Crow, the Republican megadonor whose luxury trips with Thomas sparked an ethics scandal last year.

Thomas' amendments said the trips had been "inadvertently omitted at the time of filing" his 2019 report.

They showed that Crow had furnished him with food and lodging at a hotel in Bali, Indonesia, on one trip, and on a different trip to a private club in Monte Rio, California, in July 2019.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh disclosed $340,000 in book royalty income from Javelin Group and Regnery Publishing.

Kavanaugh is penning a "legal memoir ," Axios reported Thursday. Kavanaugh weathered a fraught confirmation process after he was accused of having committed sexual assault while he was in high school.

Justice Neil Gorsuch disclosed $250,000 in royalty income from HarperCollins Publishers for his book "Over Ruled," which is due out in August.
