It is considered to be the primary beach of the town and hence one should definitely keep it in the list of attractions they will visit. You can laze in the pristine black sands of the clean beach and relish the spectacular views it has to offer. Witness the sun setting in the gleaming waters of the sea leaving the sky painted in hues of red and pink. Silhouette of the magnificent Colaba Fort could also be seen at a distance against the dusky skies. One can also feed their adventurous souls with all the water and adventure sports the beach has to offer. Consider going for parasailing in the sky or bumping into the sea on a Banana Boat Ride. If you are not a fan of watersports, then trekking and camping near the beach is waiting for you with lit bonfire and smoking barbeque.Do not miss out on the shacks near the beach selling lip-smacking foods for you to experience the local taste of the town. You can expect a plethora of options from the chosen delicacies of Konkani, Maharashtrian, Seafood, North Indian and South Indian cuisines. You should plan your meals on weekdays as weekends are very crowded as compared to weekdays. Moreover, it would be easier to catch a ferry to the fort or a horse-driven buggy to wander around the beach and try fishing without waiting in a long queue.

Akshi Beach

An extremely popular weekend destination near the busy cities of Mumbai and Pune, Akshi Beach is one of the most remarkable beaches in Alibaug. Known for its rejuvenating atmosphere and fun vibes, the beach is visited by several tourists throughout the year. A great place for swimmers and ocean lovers, Akshi Beach is also considered to be a fisherman’s beach, meaning that it isn’t as crowded or commercialized as some of the other beaches in the region.Dotted with swaying palm and coconut trees, Akshi is supposedly one of the cleanest beaches in India, making it extremely attractive to several local and migratory birds from all around the world. Every year, hundreds of bird lovers visit the beach to get a glimpse of some of the exclusive bird species that inhabit the area, including plovers, seagulls, terns, and bar-tailed Godwit. It is believed that Akshi beach is visited by over 300 different bird species annually. Located approximately 5 kilometers from the more dynamic and famous Alibaug Beach, the shore at Akshi beach is lined with several lavish resorts and cottages and comfy holiday homes. The perfect laid-back ambience of the beach enables visitors to unwind themselves and get in touch with the nature around them.

Murud Janjira Fort

Located off the coast of the Murud village near the Arabian Sea, Murud-Janjira fort is one of the strongest and beautiful marine forts of India. Around 55 km from the popular town of Alibag in Raigad district, Murud-Janjira fort is a very popular historic fort. With the Arabian Sea on all the four sides, this mighty fort has stood for centuries and is a symbol of the brave Marathas of the region. The fort is around 50 feet in height and is regarded as an ancient architectural marvel. The name Murud-Janjira originates its name from the Arabic word ‘Jazeera’ meaning “Island”. One can take a boat from the Rajapuri Jetty to reach the fort. The fort was originally built by the Sultans and later various modifications were done by the Marathas. The fort was a full-fledged living fort with natural lakes, offices, palaces, religious centers in it. During the times of conflicts, the roof of the fort was used as a watchtower. Now the roof provides a splendid view of the blue, crystal clear water of the Arabian Sea and golden sands of Murud Beach. In the Murud-Janjira Fort, there were around 500 cannons that were used in fights. Now, only a few cannons exist and are very popular among visitors. Other than that, the fort has housed some of the beautiful tombs, water tanks, and a few stone sculptures. The very popular gate of the fort is the entrance gate which is known as “Sher Darwaza” (Tiger’s Door) with a small sculpture of six elephants and a tiger.

Travel Guide to Visiting Alibaug Beach Near Mumbai

alibaug trip plan

Alibaug is a beach playground for India's rich and famous, and a refreshing Mumbai getaway. It's possible to enjoy Alibaug in a day. However, it's recommended that you take some extra time to relax there and go beach hopping along the coastline.

Although Alibaug is best known as a beach destination, the town has an interesting and unexpected history that makes it worth exploring as well. Bene Israeli Jews settled in the area, where their ship landed, about 2,200 years ago while fleeing persecution in Palestine. They adopted the local language and culture but kept their religion. Alibaug (meaning "Ali garden") is said to have been named after one of the Jews -- a rich merchant called Ali, who had plantations and orchards.

The Portuguese ruled the region from the early 16th century until they were ousted by the Marathas in the 17th century. Maratha emperor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj developed Kolaba Fort, near Alibaug, into a naval base. Later, at the beginning of the 18th century, Maratha Navy commander Kanhoji Angre used the fort to launch raids on British merchant ships. The British and Portuguese joined forces to capture the fort but were unsuccessful. It wasn't until the early 19th century that the British finally gained control of the region and fort.

Alibaug is 110 kilometers (68 miles) south of Mumbai, on the Konkan Coast of Maharashtra .

How to Get There

The quickest way of reaching Alibaug is by boat to Mandwa Jetty from the Gateway of India in South Mumbai's Colaba neighborhood . It takes about an hour to reach Mandawa Jetty by ferry, or 20 minutes by speedboat. From the jetty, the beach is another 30-45 minutes south, by bus or auto rickshaw. The bus is included in the ferry price.

Ferries operate from morning until evening (around 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.) throughout the year, except during the monsoon season from June to September. Services usually resume again in late August, but it depends on weather conditions.

If budget isn't an issue, try Uber's convenient new app-based UberBOAT service. Launched in January 2019, it provides speed boat hire between Mumbai and Alibaug's Mandawa Jetty. The service operates from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. You can expect to pay 5,700 rupees one way for a speed boat that can fit up to eight passengers. The cost of a larger boat for 10 or more passengers is 9,500 rupees one way.

The 24/7 Ro-Ro ferry service from Bhaucha Dhakka Ferry Wharf (at the dockyards near Mazgaon) to Mandwa can carry up to 500 passengers and 180 vehicles, and will continue to run during the monsoon season. Ticket prices start from 225 rupees per person, and 880 rupees per vehicle.

In addition, older ferries that carry motorcycles as well as passengers also depart from Bhaucha Dhakka Ferry Wharf. The ferries go to Revas Jetty and take approximately an hour and a half to get there.

If you're driving, Alibaug can be reached by road via the Mumbai-Goa Highway (NH-17). The journey takes three to four hours from Mumbai, depending on traffic.

Visit Alibaug from November to February, when the weather is the coolest and dry. From March onward, the temperature starts rising before the monsoon starts in June. Due to its close proximity to Mumbai and Pune , Alibaug has become a popular weekend destination and it often gets crowded then. Other busy times are the summer school holidays in April and May, and the festival season over Diwali in October or November. Weekdays are the most peaceful.

Alibaug becomes dangerous during the monsoon when tides are strong and the ocean rough. There have been instances of people getting swept away from Kolaba Fort and drowning. Therefore, it's best to avoid the water at this time of year.

What to See and Do

Kolaba Fort is the main attraction. Most of the time, it's surrounded by ocean. However, you can walk out to it during low tide, or go in a horse-pulled cart. Otherwise, take a boat.

In the center of Alibaug town, the Magen Aboth Synagogue on Israel Ali (the original Jewish lane) still operates.

There are numerous other old forts, churches, synagogues, and temples all waiting to be explored in and around Alibaug. Kanakeshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva on a hill north about 20 minutes north of Alibaug near Zirad, is one of them. Climb the exhausting 700-odd steps up to the top to be rewarded with a panoramic view, and a pretty temple complex with several smaller shrines and colorful idols of Hindu gods.

If you're more interested in fun in the sun, you'll enjoy the wide variety of water sports on the beach.

Nature lovers shouldn't miss the Native Biodiversity Garden adjoining Teenvira Dam on the Mumbai-Alibaug Road. This eco-friendly and sustainable solar-powered garden is both experiential and educational. It's divided into 17 themed sections such as medicinal, butterfly, wetland, spices, and sacred grove. Opening hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. daily.

Shopping and Relaxing

The newly-developed jetty area at Mandwa Port has recycled shipping containers that have been transformed into a cluster of hip boutiques.

Groovy clothing store and garden cafe Bohemyan Blue is situated on the Alibaug-Revas Road at Agarsure, between Kihim and Zirad. The beer is cheap too! Perfect for a chilled out afternoon. There's also rustic luxury tented accommodations with a swimming pool behind the premises, ideal for glamping. All kinds of activities are offered including yoga, cycling, go-karting, rock climbing , and horse riding.

Mumbai's 18-year-old contemporary art gallery, The Guild , relocated to Alibaug in 2015. Visit it on Mandwa Alibaug Road at Ranjanpada. Also located on Mandwa Alibaug Road at Rajmala is Lavish Antique Clocks, which sells more than 100 types of clocks modeled on antique timepieces.

Dashrath Patel Museum , at Bamansure near Chondhi Bridge, showcases the works of this groundbreaking Indian artist. It includes painting, ceramics, photography, and design.

Nostalgia Lifestyle is another trendy Mumbai business that's moved to Alibaug at Zirad. They stock a gorgeous range of indoor and outdoor furniture, water features, paintings, home decor, and swimwear.

Where to Eat and Drink

The new Mandwa Port precinct at the jetty has a cool seafront restaurant and bar called Boardwalk by Flamboyante. Kiki's Cafe and Deli also faces the ocean there, and is a popular breakfast spot with funky decor.

Hotel Sanman is the place for mouthwatering local Konkani-style seafood. This restaurant has been in business for more than 35 years. It's located in Israil Lane, opposite Chirag Executive in Alibaug town.

Other Beaches Near Alibaug

Apart from the main beach at Alibaug, which actually isn't very appealing, there are several other beaches in the area. These include:

  • Varsoli, on the northern outskirts of the Alibaug town center.
  • Kihim, 20 minutes north of Alibaug.
  • Awas, adjoining Kihim beach to the north. It's lesser frequented and quieter, about 30 minutes from Alibaug.
  • Akshi, about 10 minutes south of Alibaug.
  • Nagaon , 20 minutes south of Alibaug. It's sometimes referred to as "mini Goa" during peak season.

Most of the beaches have become polluted and touristy in recent years, with activities such as camel cart and horse rides (they don't operate during the monsoon season though). Water sports have proliferated at most beaches including Varsoli, Nagaon, and Kihim. Nagaon beach also offers boat access to Khanderi and Undheri forts.

Akshi is the best bet if you're after a secluded beach, especially during weekdays. It's popular with nature lovers and bird watchers. Kihim is also known for birds and butterflies.

Where to Stay

There's a range of accommodations around Alibaug, from luxury resorts to basic cottages by the beach. The cottages are popular with groups, as the whole property can be fully booked for privacy.

  • Near Alibaug: the Radisson Blu Resort comes fully-equipped with a health spa, perfect for pampering. Rooms cost upwards of 6,500 rupees per night for a double.
  • Near Varsoli: If you're looking for a reasonably-priced place right on the beach, you can't go past Sanman Beach Resort. It's an offshoot of Sanman restaurant, so you know the food will be tasty!
  • Near Kihim: Outpost @Alibaug is a boutique family-friendly resort, slightly inland amid nature, that was previously called the Windmill Resort. U Tropicana Alibaug is another popular resort a few kilometers from Kihim beach. The beautiful Mango Beach House at Kihim is a short walk from the beach and has a swimming pool. Rates start from about 5,000 rupees per night. Casa de Kihim has a handful of attractive wooden huts in garden setting a couple of minutes walk from the beach. If you're after a budget cottage close to the beach, Sanidhya is popular. Alternatively, there's nature and delicious food at the rustic homestay Mauli Village , inland from Kihim Beach. Mama's House is a modern Greek island themed homestay with a swimming pool on the Alibaug-Revas Road.
  • Near Awas:   Jogalekar Cottage is a hit with families. There's also Ghanvatkar Bungalow at Zirad, which is inland from Awas beach. It's good for a budget stay and has a swimming pool. Mango Farm House at Awas has four luxurious cottages (eight rooms) with pool on a coconut plantation near Zirad, priced from 4,500 rupees per night.
  • Near Nagaon: Sidz has comfortable cottages inland from Nagaon Beach, ideal for groups or families. Iora Cottages has colorful budget accommodations made out of up-cycled shipping containers about 10 minutes walk from the beach. Dolphin House Beach Resort is a decent budget place just around the corner from the beach. Nagaon Eco Center has tents and huts under the trees right on the beach. There are numerous other budget home stays and cottages set back from the beach as well.
  • Other Locations: If you're after a boutique private villa close to Mandwa Jetty, Ccaza Ccomodore  is the place!

For more private bungalows and villas, take a look at the listings on Airbnb .

What Else to Do Nearby

About 40 minutes south of Alibaug near Revdanda is historic Chaul village, where the Portugese settled and constructed a fort in the 16th century. The district is now renowned for its many quaint old temples.

A small community of Portuguese-speaking Christians lives across the river at Korlai village. The Portuguese built a companion fort on a hilly outcrop at Korlai and you can hike up to the ruins of it. A functional lighthouse is another attraction there.

One day trip to Alibaug from Mumbai

One day trip to Alibaug | Must visit places in Alibaug

Last Updated on March 5, 2024 by admin

Wondering about places to visit near Mumbai? A one day trip to Alibaug from Mumbai is ideal as there are many many places to visit in Alibaug.

Konkan is special – the beaches, the small temples around villages, the mango trees and slow country life. Diveagar Beach would be one of my favorite beaches in Konkan.

I have vivid memories of visiting the beaches of Alibaug when we used to take the ferry ride from Gateway of India to meet my aunt.

After shifting to Gujarat , I forgot all about those ferry rides and the white sandy beaches of Alibaug till very recently I had the opportunity to visit. I only had a day in Alibaug and I used it to go down memory lane and do the same things I did as a kid and more. Here’s my guide on one day trip to Alibaug.

Table of Contents

About Alibaug

Alibaug has always been a sleepy little town close to Mumbai, only the locals commuted between Alibaug and Mumbai and it was undiscovered for a long time.

But the cacophony of Mumbai only made Mumbaikars seek peaceful environs and cleaner beaches. Thus the party shifted to Alibaug for weddings, birthday celebrations and quick weekend getaways from Mumbai. Alibaug tourism flourished and how!

My visit to Alibaug

I took the morning ferry from Gateway of India, Mumbai to Alibaug. These are government-approved ferry rides that leave every half hour. Memories came rushing back as I sat on the upper deck of the boat and as the boat reversed leaving the beautiful monument behind.

Gateway of India Ferry to Alibaug

A few minutes into the ride, I saw Seagulls flying around the boat as tourists started feeding them with potato chips! It was so bizarre as parents with kids bought Kurkure packets simply to feed the gulls and make a video of it! A seagulls diet is fish and feeding it with chips was utter idiotism.

As furious as I was looking at this, I had to control myself because people wouldn’t listen to me and call me crazy instead. I saw tourists in other ferry boats doing the same. This was a major ‘Facepalm moment’. The same thing I had experienced while on the boat ride to Beyt Dwarka Camping .

I quietly sat down enjoying the view of the sea, the waves crashing on the side of the boat as the littered plastic happily floated in the morning sun’s glory.

In about 40 minutes, I could notice the land on the other side, which meant I was inching closer to Alibaug. And soon enough I did. I deboarded on the Mandwa jetty and took a rather long walk to reach the main area. From the Mandwa jetty, the town of Alibaug is another 40-50 minutes so one can choose to take a bus from the jetty bus stand or hire a private car for the day’s trip. Since I had my cousin’s car in the town, I took a bus to reach the town.

After the family greetings and a quick breakfast at home, I was ready to explore places to visit in Alibaug.

If you are up for breakfast first thing after reaching Alibaug, Kiki’s Cafe & Deli at Mandwa Jetty is an amazing place overlooking Mandwa Beach.

They have lovely breakfast options overlooking the bay and eating here will be an amazing way to start the day. The cafe itself is super cute with bicycles suspended from the ceiling, quirky illustrations all over the wall, and vibrant colours all around.

Places to visit in Alibaug

Alibaug is a typical beach town but has a lot of other places to visit in Alibaug. There are adventure activities, staycation options in the villas, beach visits as well as biodiversity parks to visit.

Alibaug Beach – Kolaba Fort

I certainly wanted to check out the highlight of Alibaug – Kolaba Fort. As a kid, I was fascinated to walk across the ocean in low tide to reach a fort. What also fascinated me was the fact that this fort has sweet water well!

I parked the car outside and walked over the parapet wall to see the low tide in action.

Being the closest to town, the Alibaug beach always is full of life with horse buggies, coconut water vendors and shops selling street snacks. A sitting area gives a good chance to simply relax and enjoy the beach view.

Alibaug water sports is also what brings a lot of tourists. Water sports such as banana boat ride, jet ski and sea kayaking are some of the most popular adventure activities of Alibaug Beach during one day trip to Alibaug.

Horse buggy at alibaug beach

Surrounded by the Arabian Sea waters from all sides lies a fortress which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Alibaug. Although this 300 years fort now lies in shambles, it was a sight a behold during the reign of Shivaji Maharaj in Maharashtra wherein the fort was used as the chief naval station. It is a nationally-protected area under the ASI.

I happily walked to the fort, although taking a horse buggy is also possible! I noticed some local vendors just outside the fort wall selling a local variety of fruits – chana bor, kairi, kakdi, chinch (my mouth is watering as I type this) and others. I got my entry ticket of INR 5 and went in.

Even though the fort is cut off for half the day, there is a community that has been living in the fort for generations and goes about doing their daily work. They have to shift back to the coast during the monsoons, but they spend the rest of the months in their home praying in the fort temple. Their source of water is that one sweet water well and a tank which gets filled with rainwater.

I walked around the fort, checking out the ocean views from each side, paying my respects at the temple and being in awe of the last remnants of the fort like the cannons!

Varsoli Beach

The next stop for my day was Varsoli Beach, a 4 km ride from the town. Varsoli beach makes me feel like I am on one of those Konkan beaches. The pristinely beautiful Varsoli beach is one of the clean beaches in Alibaug and that is one of the best Alibaug visiting places. While an evening stroll around the sunset will give you Goa feels, it is equally mesmerizing in the morning.

I love Varsoli beach for the beautiful forests that lead up to the beach. This place always kind of made me reminisce about old Bollywood movies where the actors danced around such trees to melodious tunes. It’s perfect to overlook the waves while sipping water from fresh coconut. The seafood, as well as veg food, served in shacks is delicious.

Native Biodiversity Garden

This recently opened Biodiversity garden is absolutely worth adding to your one day trip to Alibaug. This 1.25-acre park, in the compound of a government guest house, is owned by the Zila Parishad, sponsored by Shapoorji Pallonji and developed by Mumbai NGO the Centre for Environmental Research and Education (CERE).

The garden boasts of 55,000 plants of 525 indigenous species, especially from the Western Ghats. The entire garden is sustainable as it is manicured to look like a typical garden and is run on solar power. The light fixtures have been fabricated from waste material.

The garden is further divided into several sections like sensory, medicinal, butterfly, wetland, etc. to attract birds, butterflies and insects. At the entrance, you can spot the ginormous 8-foot tall hand-carved Deepmaal that signifies the local custom of welcoming guests with lights.

Dashrat Patel Museum

If you love arts and crafts then Dashrat Patel museum is an offbeat place to visit in Alibaug. The museum houses paintings, ceramic pottery, photography and design-related work by Dashrath Patel, the founding secretary of the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad.

By the time this museum visit is over, it will probably be time to head back to Mandwa jetty for the ride back to Mumbai. Before doing that I would recommend you to catch up on high tea at one of the many amazing Cafes in Alibaug.

Where to Eat in Alibaug

Going back to Alibaug town from Dashrat Patel Museum would be a long journey. So instead just head to the exit destination and choose from the many beautifully decorated cafes at Mandwa Jetty.

If you are in for picturesque sea views, I will highly recommend spending time at Boardwalk By Flamboyante. This waterfront restaurant is right between the bridge that takes you to the boats and the parking lots, so saves tons of time in commuting and there’s never a fear of not catching the ferry back. There is an outdoor seating area as well as an indoor area if it gets too hot outside.

With wide arrays of dishes, the menu has something for everyone. Their thin-crust pizzas, fries, burgers and coffee are amazing.

How to Reach Alibaug from Mumbai?

In order to cover one day trip to Alibaug there is an efficient transportation system.

Alibaug’s distance from Mumbai is about 100 km. The quickest transport to get to Alibaug from Mumbai is by boat from the Gateway of India. It is a 40 minutes ride by ferry and approximately 20 minutes in a speed boat. One can also hire private yachts for groups that take over an hour to reach the Mandwa Jetty. Alibaug Ferry time starts as early as 6 am and the last one from either side is around 6 pm. Tickets are available on the spot.

Note: Alibaug weather is bad during the monsoon and hence ferries are closed during the entire duration of the monsoon (Mid June to the end of September).

Recently, Mumbai to Alibaug Ro-Ro car ferry service has started which will work even in monsoon and reduce the road travel time.

From the jetty, it takes additional 30-40 minutes by bus, taxi or auto-rickshaw to get into town. The buses don’t function past 6 pm and the taxis and autos charge a super expensive fare.

One can reach Alibaug from Mumbai by road which takes up to three and a half hours. Government-run buses ply on this route every day.
