Mediterranean Cruise Ports of Call

Discover some of the world-renowned destinations that await you on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.

Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.

As one of the greenest islands in Greece, Corfu is an emerald treasure amidst the colorful Mediterranean landscape. From Paleokastritsa, hike to the mountaintop for unparalleled views of the Ionian Sea. Or get a taste of Corfu when you team up with a famous chef, and handpick local produce that they’ll use to prepare your lunch. Experience it all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

On a Mediterranean cruise to Livorno, travel to Florence or Pisa where artifacts abound. Capture snapshots of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, stop by Michelangelo’s David statue at the Accademia and walk up to the “Gates of Paradise” at the Baptistery. Or explore the countryside and meander through the region’s rolling hills that bear vineyards and green olive groves.

Nestled within Boka Bay lies a medieval gem. Kotor is enrobed in ancient houses, palaces and churches that speak to its 12th-century origins. On a Greek cruise, dine on Montenegrin cuisine in the home of a local chef, appreciate 14th-century Venetian art at St. Tryphon’s Cathedral and taste regional wines along the riviera. Or see another side of the city when you kayak through the tunnels of Lipa Cave.

As the largest port in the Mediterranean, Marseille is the gateway to opportunity. On a Mediterranean cruise, spend the day in Arles, and explore the landscapes that inspired much of Van Gogh’s artwork. Stroll through the MuSaMa, a soap museum, and create your own blend alongside a master soap maker. Or roam the city’s most popular landmark, Notre-Dame de la Garden, a Catholic basilica that overlooks the city.

Famous for its beaches and spirited lifestyle, Mykonos is the heartbeat of Greece. Embark on a jeep safari past the city’s windmills, lighthouses and lakes. Walk past temples and marble-lined sanctuaries in Delos, the birthplace of famous Greek gods. Or soak up a day of relaxation on the beach with the city’s Cycladic architecture as your backdrop — all on a Greek cruise with Princess.

Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.

Santorini is the epitome of Greece. Wander into the welcoming cafes in Oia, a village teeming with whitewashed buildings and blue-domed roofs. Continue to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and taste the bouquet of wines produced on the island, making sure to visit the black-sand beach of Kamari before heading back to your Mediterranean cruise ship.

Why Cruise the Mediterranean

In lands where the culture is as flavorful as the cuisine, the splendor of the Mediterranean speaks for itself.

World-Class Dining

Captivating cuisine

With mouthwatering entrees and confections, the Mediterranean invites you to embark on a gourmet tour through iconic cities. Reawaken your taste buds with Italian classics like pastas, pizzas and gelato. Or fill your plate with gyros, keftethes and baklava on a Greek cruise. From breakfast to dinner and every delectable dessert in between, the best is before you with Princess.

Bold reds and crisp whites

The countryside of Italy and Greece are home to some of the most flavorful wines around the globe. With sun and warm temperatures year-round, vineyards are flourishing with grapes by the harvest season. Sip on Italy’s red wines, or sample Greece’s white blends. From sweet Lambruscos to earthy Bordeauxs, fill up your glass on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess.

Ancient Ruins

Where history comes to life

From towers and temples to cities and shorelines, the Mediterranean is sprinkled with remains of civilizations past. Step back in time on a tour through ancient ruins on a Mediterranean cruise with Princess. Imagine life as a gladiator at the Colosseum, explore Greek mythology at the Parthenon and discover the archeological excavations of Pompeii — a lost city and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Art Galleries & Museums

Artistic ingenuity abounds

From the treasures on land to the jewels within museums, the Mediterranean is a true work of art. On an Italian cruise, see portraits from the Renaissance period at the Uffizi Museum in Florence, and admire Michelangelo’s masterpieces at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Or walk in the footsteps of celebrated artists that called these regions home — like Picasso and Dali — and allow their work to spark your creativity.

Sun-Kissed Beaches

A vision of natural beauty

Visions of sparkling coasts and crystalline waters welcome you to the Mediterranean. Dip your toes on the black-sand coast of Santorini on a Greek cruise. Head to Salerno to spend the day in Positano relaxing on the white beaches and admiring the pastel houses that decorate the cliffs around you. Or travel to Mykonos with your loved ones and daydream on the city’s long stretch of golden sand and stroll in the sunshine.

Mediterranean excursions

Our award-winning Mediterranean cruise shore excursions bring you to iconic beaches, landmarks and ancient artifacts. See the yacht-lined shores of Kotor while riding on a tuk tuk, an electric rickshaw. Savor the flavors of “Koum Kouat” liqueur, created from Corfu’s exclusive citrus plant. Or stroll along the streets of Dubrovnik’s Old town, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.

Local connections

From chefs and beverage makers to artists and guides, meet the many personalities that call the Mediterranean home with our Local Connections program. On a Mediterranean cruise, voyage to an olive tree farm just outside of Provence, and join your hosts for a unique olive oil tasting. Or explore the Archaeological Museum of Naples with a local artist, and accompany them for lunch to dive even deeper in Italy’s art scene.

More ashore

Enjoy even more opportunities to experience the colors, cultures and flavors of the Mediterranean with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays. Witness the beautiful sunset in Mykonos on a Greek cruise. Sit front-row for a flamenco dance, and savor a paella dinner during an evening in Barcelona. Or stroll the illuminated streets of Genoa with gelato in hand after a traditional Italian dinner.

Mediterranean Cruise Onboard Experience

Curated comfort, world-class entertainment and international flavors await you.

Accomodations

Your home away from home

Flavors that inspire

From the zest of Provencal ratatouille to the sweetness of Greek Halva, the Mediterranean is bursting with flavor. On board most Princess ships, indulge in a pasta dinner at Sabatini’s℠, or savor local seafood at Crown Grill. While ashore, treat yourself to gelato in Italy or churros in Spain. From ship to shore, appease your appetite with one-of-a-kind dining experiences on every Mediterranean cruise itinerary.

Entertainment

Find your joy

Embark on adventures by day, and indulge in entertainment by night. Watch Movies Under the Stars® at our 300-square-foot outdoor theater. Attend original productions from Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz, composer of  Wicked . Or learn traditional moves, like Flamenco or Irish stepdance, and listen to popular music from the destinations on your itinerary. On a European cruise with Princess, the choice is yours.

Celebrations and Romance

Love blooms on the Love Boat

It's difficult to imagine something more romantic than sailing through the alluring cities and charming countryside of Europe. While on board your European cruise, we cater to your sentimental side with private dining on your balcony — like breakfast for two or a sunset dinner — honeymoon packages, flowers and chocolates delivered to your room and couples-only massages in the Sanctuary.

Youth & Teen Center

Our European cruises were crafted with every guest in mind — even the younger ones. From 6-month old babies to 17-year old teens, kids can unwind and relax or play and explore. In partnership with Discovery™, kids can learn even more with special insights about Italy, Greece and everywhere in between. With engaging activities on board and ashore, kids can see history books come to life before their eyes.

Top Mediterranean FAQs

Where do Mediterranean cruises go?

Whether you love art, history, natural wonders, fine cuisine, or all of the above, a Mediterranean cruise lets you experience something amazing at every stop. The Mediterranean region is vast, including many countries each with its own personality, cuisine, and scenery.

Celebrity’s Mediterranean cruises sail from Athens, Barcelona, Rome, Southampton, and Ravenna (Venice).

Feel like an old-fashioned movie star on the French Riviera, learn about military history in Malta, explore Biblical history in Israel, and delve back more than 4,000 years in time to Egypt.

How long are Mediterranean cruises?

Mediterranean cruises on Celebrity last from six to 12 nights. Spend seven nights visiting popular ports in Spain, France, and Italy, or longer voyages that include Greece and Turkey.

When’s the best time to cruise?

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean will vary depending on your particular interests and schedule. The main Mediterranean cruise season runs from April through November each year, with June to September the peak months. But with Celebrity you can cruise Europe year round.

July to September is the peak summer season in the Mediterranean, when most Europeans take their summer vacation. April, May, June, later in September, and October are all great months to visit, too. You can sail the Mediterranean with Celebrity right up to November, which is a wonderful time for sightseeing with fewer people around. The best time to head to the far south of the region is from February to April, when the climate is perfect for exploring Israel and Egypt.

What should I pack?

When you’re packing for a Mediterranean cruise, swimwear and beach outfits are essential. You’ll need comfortable shoes for sightseeing, whether this involves walking over uneven cobblestone roads or clambering over the rocky paths of the Acropolis in Athens.

A good sun hat is essential If you want to visit churches, synagogues, and cathedrals we recommend long pants or skirt and a scarf/shawl to cover your shoulders.

If you’re traveling at the beginning or the end of the season, the weather could be cool, so bring cover-ups and a light waterproof jacket.

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through coverups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps.

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos.

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

What can I see while I’m there?

From the history-lined canals of Venice to the sun-soaked playgrounds of the French Riviera to the iconic architecture of Spain, our array of award-winning Europe vacations offers something special for every discerning world traveler.

Get up close to historic sites like the ancient Colosseum in Rome, the Acropolis in Athens, and the charming Old City of Dubrovnik. Take stellar photos at the Piazza San Marco in Venice, the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy, and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. See Michelangelo’s remarkable Renaissance artwork on the Sistine Chapel ceiling as you tour Vatican City.

In Portugal, experience the spectacular medieval architecture in Lisbon and taste a variety of Port wines in Porto. Explore our port of call in Italy, Trieste, and its ancient architecture, lively cultural scene, and Venetian-inspired coffeehouses. We’re also returning to Kusadasi, and Istanbul in Turkey.

Some of the most beautiful natural sights you’ll ever see may be the view of the whitewashed buildings and turquoise waters in Santorini or the pastel-colored fishing villages in the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

Where are the best beaches?

The Mediterranean is fringed with  dazzlingly beautiful beaches . Here, you’ll find some of the most beautiful stretches of sand in the world, wild dunes, craggy cliffs, rocky coves, and aquamarine shallows on others.

For long sweeps of sand, great watersports, and a lively scene, try Mykonos. If black or red sand intrigues you, head for Santorini. For old-fashioned glamor, visit the beaches around Italy’s Amalfi Coast or the chic beach towns along the French Riviera.

Sardinia arguably has the most beautiful turquoise water. Ibiza is fringed with pretty coves, some sleepy, some with cool beach bars and DJs spinning tunes all afternoon.

What is there for families to do on a Mediterranean cruise?

The Mediterranean is fantastic for families. It’s educational, it brings history to life, the shopping is great, the ice cream unsurpassed, and the beaches superb. Mediterranean cultures love kids, too, and children are welcomed everywhere.

Families can enjoy the Colosseum in Rome, gondola rides in Venice, the old walls of Dubrovnik, and cable cars for stunning city views or off-road buggy experiences. You can also experience Pompeii, the cave houses of Matera, and for soccer fans, Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona.

Should I book tours ahead of time?

If you are traveling in peak season, we recommend you book your Shore Excursions through My Celebrity Cruises as soon as you confirm your sailing as many attractions around the Mediterranean are extremely popular.

Booking a shore excursion  with Celebrity also means you’ll be visiting attractions with a professional guide, and on a tour that guarantees to return you to the ship on time.

Whether you're looking for a private, customizable experience, a carefully curated guided tour with a small group, or an unforgettable trip to iconic local landmarks, we have the right option to discover any destination, granting in-depth knowledge, expertise, and a truly extraordinary experience.

Can I get around with English?

Many languages are spoken around the Mediterranean, from Maltese to French, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Turkish, and Hebrew. Most people working in the hospitality industry speak some English.

Do I need a visa?

You will need a passport to travel to the Mediterranean, but the vast majority of countries visited by European cruises do not require a visa. From 2024, Americans, Canadians, and British citizens will be required to register for the new European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) to enter 30 European countries.

This will be easy to apply for, inexpensive, and is simply a pre-authorization system similar to the ESTA that Europeans need to travel to the U.S. and Canada. Once you have the ETIAS, it will be valid for three years. You should make sure you have at least six months before your passport expires, too.

To appreciate the history and the UNESCO sites

From the Greeks to the Romans and Ottomans, men have been vying to rule the Mediterranean Basin and control its shipping routes since ancient times. Today, the numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites are a testament to the region's economic and cultural wealth and to the diversity of the Mediterranean people. Setting sail on a Mediterranean cruise is a chance to admire a myriad of perfectly preserved artefacts and unmissable sites: the Acropolis of Athens; the Theatre of Epidaurus; the sacred island of Delos; the ancient city of Nessebar; the archaeological ruins of Delphi; the medieval city of Rhodes; the historic centres of Valletta Dubrovnik, Kotor and Syracuse; and the relics of Pompeii, Rome and Venice.

To enjoy the laidback lifestyle

White limestone rocks, soft green pines clinging to the cliffs, cloudless blue skies... The landscapes of the Mediterranean are as distinctive as they are beautiful. From the fields of olive trees and lavender to the crystal clear waters and the streets lined with orange trees, exploring this region is an adventure for all five senses. Not to mention the gourmet markets, overflowing with fragrant flowers, delicious fruit and vegetables, and sweet honey. These local gathering places are the perfect chance to wander from stall to stall, taking in the colours and accents all around you. Travellers who want to embrace the Mediterranean lifestyle need to slow down and appreciate la dolce vita: the diverse flavours, the people who talk with their hands, and the warm sun that caresses your skin.

To stand at the crossroads of civilisation

From the Iberian Peninsula to the Turkish Riviera, the Mediterranean is where Europe meets Africa and Asia. Throughout history, the sea has allowed men to travel from shore to shore and from east to west , discovering new curiosities and trading knowledge and goods. The Mediterranean boasts a unique blend of cultures : small ports with Byzantine architecture, ancient Ottoman cities, Greek and Roman ruins, Hispano-Moresque palaces... From the Black Sea to the Adriatic and from the Aegean Sea to the Strait of Gibraltar, every community has its own distinctive style and way of life.

The Amalfi Coast

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, the Amalfi Coast is the jewel in Italy's crown. Its verdant cliffs, fragrant citrus terraces, and the picturesque hillside villages of Amalfi, Ravello and Positano have made it famous all over the world. Legend has it that the gods of Olympus, who wanted to listen to the song of the Sirens, used to walk the path that overlooks the coast. From high on the cliffs, they could see the entire Gulf of Salerno, all the way out to the island of Capri and the tiny Sirenuse Archipelago from which the bewitching voices came.

Ancient Greece

Outstanding navigators, intrepid explorers and talented builders, the ancient Greeks were constructing incredible monuments throughout Mediterranean as early as the 5th century BC. The Acropolis of Athens may be the most famous example, but the majestic Theatre of Epidaurus is the jewel of the Peloponnese, showcasing the architects' understanding of acoustics and harmony. The second-largest ancient theatre is found several thousand kilometres away in Ephesus, Turkey, an ancient port city dedicated to the goddess Artemis. This vast venue could hold over 24,000 spectators.

Idyllic Greece

What do you picture when you hear the word "Greece"? Whitewashed houses, immaculate hillside villages with royal blue accents, fishing hamlets frozen in time ... These Greek dreams can become a reality: admire a sunset over the sea from Santorini, enjoy the clear waters and beaches of Mykonos, or lose yourself in the pedestrianised lanes of the small island of Hydra. The Greek Islands are the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy a moment of pure serenity.

The Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal cuts through the isthmus that shares its name, separating the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland. Inaugurated in 1893 , it is just over six kilometres long, allowing commercial and tourist vessels with a draught of less than eight metres to avoid a 400-kilometre detour around the peninsula. The canal is enclosed by walls on each side, reaching a maximum height of around 50 metres. Watching the ship sail through this narrow waterway from the outer decks is a truly unique and unmissable sight.

The Dalmatian coast

Embrace the laid-back lifestyle in the small seaside town of Hvar , walk the ramparts of Dubrovnik , the "Pearl of the Adriatic", or wander the walled city of Split . From historic centres to crystal-clear waters, the Dalmatian coast truly has it all. Take Montenegro, for example, where wooded hills and authentic villages overlook the Bay of Kotor , the perfect spot for secluded swimming.

Succumb to the enchanting charms of Istanbul, previously known as Byzantium and Constantinople. Drawing on a multitude of influences, this magical city offers the best of the Greek, Roman and Ottoman worlds. The Topkapi Palace, the Blue Mosque and the Hagia Sophia are just some of Istanbul's magnificent monuments, not to mention the innumerable stalls of the Grand Bazaar. A stop in Istanbul is also an excellent chance to admire the carved wooden palaces along the Bosphorus.

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Perched on the cliffs at the southern tip of Corsica , Bonifacio is a classic Mediterranean citadel. Bonifacio has always enjoyed a privileged position in terms of trading with the rest of the Mediterranean. Due to its strategic location between Italy and France, the city has been claimed by many different powers over the years, including the Republics of Pisa and Genoa. Today, the southernmost city of metropolitan France stands proud above its idyllic surroundings . Secret coves, a charming harbour and a range of nature walks make it an essential stop in the Mediterranean.

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

The Alhambra

If your cruise is stopping in Malaga, you might want to consider heading inland. Some 120 km away, the beautiful city of Granada is home to the equally breathtaking Alhambra palace . Built in 1238 by Mohammed ben Nazar, it is a testament to the Muslim presence in Spain from the 8th to the 15th century. Take your chance to explore every room of this incredible structure, from the Nasrid Palaces to the famous Court of the Lions. Its incredible stucco decorations , arabesques and columns will have you at a loss for words. The Partal Gardens with the Tower of the Ladies and its basin are particularly exquisite. Victor Hugo himself was inspired by this magical place: "The Alhambra! The Alhambra! Palace that geniuses have golden as a dream and filled with harmonies" ( Les Orientales , 1828).

The coastal playgrounds of Europe will be at your complete disposal with a luxury Mediterranean cruise. Time spent on this fabled waterway, kissing the coasts of storybook islands and sweeping into centuries-old ports will quickly accord you a cosmopolitan European attitude and all the panache that goes with it. From small fishing villages to grand piers to yacht-filled marinas, a chic Mediterranean cruise will easily remind you many times over that life is meant to be lived – and lived

well. Hopping from port to port presents one history lesson after another, propped up with architecture and art you’ve only ever read about; museums and ruins that hold stories and secrets of centuries past. Spain’s Costa del Sol along the Alboran Sea and the islands of the

Balearic Sea lead the way to the French Riviera and the allure of St. Tropez and Monaco. Both coasts of Italy have an ample supply of adventure through the Tyrrhenian Sea touching on Sardinia and Corsica or in the Adriatic Sea, which leads to further exploration of Croatia and Montenegro. Meanwhile, the islands of Greece and Turkey are as numerous as they are fascinating. Further east, your Mediterranean exploration can carry on, perhaps to Crete or Cyprus, or reach all the way to the Holy Lands. A luxurious “floating hotel” awaits at the end of the day, ready to satiate all your culinary desires before whisking you off to the next exciting port of call. From Gibraltar to Haifa, the stimulation and inspiration never need to stop, each place in the sun more incredible than the last.

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater.

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Viking Saturn

Debuted in May 2023, the adults-only Viking Saturn has the capacity to hold 930 passengers and 465 crew members. Travelers love the ship's clean Scandinavian design and compact size, which allows it to dock in smaller ports that larger cruise ships cannot reach.

On board, travelers have access to a slew of amenities, including a fitness center, a spa, a library, a state-of-the-art theater, a hair salon, an infinity pool and more. A resident historian is also on board to offer lectures and educational programming about upcoming port destinations. When hunger strikes, Viking Saturn offers an array of dining options, from fresh seafood at World Café to afternoon tea service at Wintergarden to traditional Norwegian cuisine at Mamsen's. Or, learn how to prepare regional dishes from your itinerary at the onboard cooking school.

Starting at 270 square feet, standard staterooms come equipped with king-size mattresses (which can be converted into two twin beds), flat-screen TVs, full-size verandas and bathrooms with heated floors. What's more, each accommodation includes 24-hour room service. Travelers who opt to stay in one of the ship's upgraded suites (which reach up to 1,448 square feet) have access to additional perks such as separate living areas and dining rooms, complimentary laundry services and a welcome bottle of Champagne, among other luxuries.

Viking Saturn sails to a variety of destinations in northern Europe (such as Bergen, Norway; London  and Stockholm ) and the Mediterranean (think: Barcelona, Spain ; Rome ; Athens, Greece ; and Istanbul ).

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Guests also have their choice of cuisine, from alfresco dining on the Aquavit Terrace to Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. With 550 crew members on board, the ship maintains a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio.

Viking Sky sails to the Mediterranean, Europe, Central America and more. The ship also offers world voyages.

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Debuted in May 2023, Oceania Cruises' first new ship in more than a decade can hold up to 1,200 passengers and 800 crew members. Vista is the inaugural ship in Oceania's Allura Class, featuring top-of-the-line amenities like a culinary center, an artist loft and an extensive library, along with facilities like a pool, a casino, a spa and a fitness center. Additionally, Vista offers enrichment opportunities like destination-focused seminars led by guest speakers and dynamic musical performances.

In the evening, guests can grab a drink at their choice of several bars and lounges; Vista's immersive mixology program utilizes innovative techniques and trends to create an elevated cocktail experience.

Vista's well-appointed staterooms – which range from 240 to 2,400 square feet – boast balconies, queen-size beds, rainforest showers, flat-screen TVs and 24-hour room service, among other amenities. If you splurge for a suite, you'll enjoy added benefits like iPads, cashmere blankets, complimentary laundry and shoeshine services, access to the Executive Lounge and butler service.

Oceania Vista explores an array of popular destinations in the U.S., the Caribbean, Mexico, the Mediterranean and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  The design of the Vista creates more expansive and contemporary public areas than other ships in Oceania's fleet, so even when the ship is at full capacity, it never feels crowded. Also, since it is an all-veranda ship, all guests have the same great ocean view. – Julie L. Kessler, Contributor

Mediterranean cruises: your questions answered

The first places most people think of are Rome and Athens, due to their unique historical and cultural sights. Cunard also visits Spain - Barcelona features amazing Gaudi architecture that's well worth a look - Southern France - famous for its vineyards - and Croatia, where lesser-known but just as impressive historic sites await.

The best weather in this region is from April until November, and Cunard visits the Mediterranean within this window. If you're looking for a tan and don't mind the heat, travel in June or July, but if you prefer milder temperatures book your cruise in the autumn months.

The Mediterranean has a changeable climate, depending on the season, but dry, hot and sunny days are to be expected in the peak summer months and often during spring and into autumn. It's not out of the question for temperatures to exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in July or August while even September and October can herald warm and pleasant weather. If you're hoping to spend time relaxing on some of the Mediterranean's sandy beaches, it's best to avoid travel during November to March when temperatures are cooler and days can be fresh and rainy.

Depending on the time of year, you'll need cool clothes and comfortable shoes for exploring the exciting ports along your journey. A sunhat and sunscreen are a must in the summer months, and would be wise in the autumn too, as the sun can still be strong in September and October. For evenings on deck bring light jackets for when the temperatures cool.

For more details and suggested packing lists, see our special guide on what to pack for Mediterranean cruises .

Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Croatia, and Greece all use the Euro. Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar Pound, (although Pound Sterling and Euros are unofficially accepted in parts).

There are twenty sovereign countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea: Spain, Gibraltar, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Cyprus, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco.

Cunard typically sails to countries on the Southern European Coast; Spain, Gibraltar, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Croatia and Greece. Be sure to check our exciting itineraries for more details.

A variety of languages are spoken in the Mediterranean. In Spain, where Spanish is the official language, you'll also find regional languages including Catalan, Galician, Basque and Occitan. Spanish is also spoken in Gibraltar, even though the official language of Gibraltar is English. Similarly, in Malta both Maltese and English are spoken.

In France the native language is French, in Italy it's Italian, in Greece it's Greek and in Croatia it's Croatian. French is also the official language of Monaco but you'll encounter Italian spoken by much of the population here too.

UK and EU citizens, residents of Schengen countries plus residents of the U.S, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan and New Zealand don't currently require a visa to travel the Mediterranean providing the duration of stay is less than 90 days.

(Monaco – December 1, 2020) Silversea Cruises, the leading ultra-luxury cruise line, today opens an exclusive pre-sale to Venetian Society members on 315 new voyages for 2022-2023—the largest itinerary release in the cruise line’s history. With Silversea becoming more all-inclusive than ever, guests will enjoy complimentary shore excursions and roundtrip air included with all voyages in the new itinerary collection, as they travel deeper into 669 destinations in 114 countries, across all seven continents, between March 2022 and May 2023.

“We are very proud to launch our Venetian Society pre-sale for our largest-ever collection of itineraries,” says Roberto Martinoli, Silversea’s President & CEO. “With shore excursions and roundtrip air included in the cruise fare for all 10 ships in our fleet—a first for our cruise line—our guests will discover the most remarkable experiences around the world with unprecedented convenience, travelling deep into captivating cultures, untouched landscapes, and open-hearted communities. Once again, we are pushing boundaries in ultra-luxury cruising for the enjoyment of our guests, who are more curious than ever and are always in search of their next adventure.”

In addition to 61 maiden calls—which include Eidfjord, Norway; Rio Guajara, Brazil; and Foula in the United Kingdom, among others—the new collection of itineraries comprises a reimagined range of expedition voyages, including an unprecedented itinerary that will take guests deep into the Amazon Rainforest; all-new journeys to many of the world’s most iconic destinations, as well as the lesser-known gems accessible only to small ships; and a range of departures that will take guests deep into the action at world-renowned events. Shore excursions have long been included on all Silversea expeditions; with the launch of Silversea’s new all-inclusive offering, guests will also be able to choose from more than 1,400 complimentary shore excursions from a total of almost 2,500 experiences aboard the cruise line’s ocean-going fleet. On every voyage in the collection, guests can take advantage of Silversea’s 10% Early Booking Bonus Saving, as well as included flights, transfers, hotels, shore excursions, plus all onboard beverages, gratuities, and unlimited Wi-Fi during the voyage.

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Stunning seascapes, ancient architecture and monuments, delicious delicacies, and some of the best art in the world make a trip to the Mediterranean an item on everyone’s bucket list . Linking Europe to Africa and Asia, the Mediterranean Sea offers unmatched beauty, culture, and history. From sun-drenched beaches to ancient ruins, the best way to experience all this breathtaking region has to offer is on a floating resort.

On a cruise, you don’t have to worry about where you will stay that night, check-in and check-out times, or accommodation costs. The biggest decisions you have to make are which of the ship’s restaurants to dine in that evening and what cocktail to order.

From the canals of Venice to the Acropolis in Athens, experience the dolce vita in the Med. Discover the Holy Land, the Greek Islands, and Adriatic countries in the Eastern Mediterranean. In the Western Mediterranean, you’ll find Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, and Monaco.

In Italy, you can see Venice’s Piazza San Marco, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, and pastel-colored fishing villages on the Amalfi Coast. In Greece, take in whitewashed buildings, turquoise waters, and stunning sunsets. Explore medieval architecture in Lisbon, Portugal, and Old Town Dubrovnik in Croatia, one of the most well-preserved medieval cities in the world.

But the Med is not just a feast for your eyes. Try real port wine from Porto, Portugal; enjoy a plate of paella in Spain; fill up on bread, cheese, and pastries in France; sample fresh homemade pasta in Italy; and munch on moussaka in Greece.

But which Mediterranean cruise line should you choose to experience all the Med has to offer? We polled our readers to help you decide in our 2022 Best of Travel Awards. Below, you’ll find TravelAwaits readers’ favorite Mediterranean cruise lines.

Viking Sea Cruise ship leaving the port of Kalamata city against a cloudy sunset sky in Messenia, Greece

1. Viking (Winner)

It’s no surprise that Viking Cruises tops TravelAwaits readers’ list as Best Mediterranean Cruise Line. After all, this small ship cruise line is touted as the “thinking person’s cruise.” It could also be the fact that Viking does not allow kids under 18. The classy cruise line also doesn’t have casinos or umbrella drinks. There’s no smoking onboard and no formal nights to get gussied up for.

What is included? Wi-Fi, an onshore excursion in every port, regional cuisine , and luxe accommodations. Unlike many other cruise lines, Viking features king-size beds, large showers, heated bathroom floors, private verandas, 24-hour room service, and more. They also offer culturally enriching programs such as guest lecturers, resident historians, regional performance arts such as traditional Greek dancing, an onboard cooking school, and more.

Viking offers several Mediterranean cruises ranging from eight to 29 days. From the turquoise splendor of the Greek isles to the vineyards of Provence, itineraries include Rome’s ruins, Tuscan towns, Antoni Gaudi’s architectural delights in Barcelona, tasting port in Portugal, strolling the car-free alleys in Venice, and the holy city of Jerusalem.

“The team at Viking Cruises will make your stay so wonderful you won’t want to go home. Guests are often so pleased with their trips that they use their onboard discount to book a future Viking Cruise before they depart,” says TravelAwaits writer Judy Freeman. Read more about why she loves this cruise line in her article, How To Make The Most Of Your Viking Cruise Vacation . And if you decide to book a Viking cruise, here are five important things to do to prepare for it .

Like a boutique hotel at sea, its fleet of relatively small ships offers an exclusive club-like experience. Suite guests can enjoy the sweet life with butler services.

Featuring local encounters, overnight experiences, and curated shore excursions, trips tend to take a couple of weeks. Best Mediterranean cruises in 2024 and 2025

Fran Golden

The Mediterranean region has it all — amazing food and wine, famous historical and cultural landmarks, scenic seaside towns and gorgeous island beaches.

You'd be hard-pressed to experience Spain , France , Italy and Greece on one land tour without transportation issues. A Mediterranean cruise, however, is the perfect way to get a taste of many coastal countries with ease; you can transit between destinations while you sleep aboard your ship.

Most cruise lines operate trips in the Mediterranean over the summer, whether on tiny ships with a few hundred passengers or giant megaships with several thousand people. Some vessels even sail the region year-round.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Most Mediterranean cruises focus on one region (usually the eastern or western halves of the coastline), but longer itineraries might encompass more. While choosing a ship is important, so is picking which route to take and which countries you want to see.

Consider what's on your bucket list. Cruise lines offer a variety of options, making it possible for culture vultures, beach lovers, history buffs and family travelers to prioritize different ports of call and onboard amenities.

Here are some of the best Mediterranean cruises departing in 2024 and 2025 to whet your appetite for a European adventure by sea.

Best cruise for romantics: Windstar Cruises in the rivieras

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

For romance seekers, few experiences beat a cruise that lingers along the French and Italian rivieras. France's Cote d'Azur, with its coastal mountains and crystal blue sea, has inspired artists and romantics for centuries. The equally stunning Italian coast is perfect for a romantic stroll around secluded harbors and an indulgent, delectable lunch at a table for two overlooking the ocean.

Another popular port of call on riviera itineraries is Monaco, where you might visit the royal palace of the Grimaldi family and stop by the glamorous Monte Carlo Casino to pretend you are James Bond enjoying a night on the town.

You'll find these cruises on small and luxury ships. Our pick for romance is Windstar Cruises ' seven-night "Yachtsman's Harbors of the Rivieras" sailing between Rome and Barcelona (or vice versa) on multiple spring, summer and fall dates in 2024 and 2025.

The five-masted Wind Surf is as picture-perfect as the ports you'll visit, and the 342-passenger ship can follow all the luxury yachts into smaller harbors and off-the-beaten-track destinations. Your onboard meals, with many dishes created by James Beard-affiliated chefs, might even rival the fresh Mediterranean cuisine you'll find in port.

Ports of call vary by sailing date but can include Port-Vendres, Sanary-sur-Mer and Cannes, France; Monte Carlo, Monaco; and Portofino and Portoferraio, Italy. For the ultimate riviera experience, book one of Windstar's Prix du Monde sailings with exclusive access to the Formula One racing events.

Best cruise for budget-conscious travelers: Celestyal Cruises in the Greek islands

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Visiting the Greek islands is a magical experience. Lessons in ancient history and the development of Western civilization come to life surrounded by astounding natural beauty.

Your jaw might drop as your ship navigates the sunken caldera that leads to Santorini, where whitewashed villages dot the tops of steep cliffs. In Mykonos, you can head to one of the island's famous beaches or catch a ferry to explore the ancient ruins of Delos, known as the birthplace of Apollo. Budget-conscious travelers can skip the tours and stroll the narrow streets and city walls Rhodes' Old Town.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise tips to enhance your European vacation

For less pricey ways to see the Greek islands, consider Celestyal Cruises ; it sails three- and four-night minicruises in addition to affordable one-week sailings. A four-night cruise packs a lot into a short sailing with visits to Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Heraklion and Santorini, as well as Kusadasi, Turkey. Don't forget to spend time in Athens before or after your cruise.

Celestyal's two ships carry between 1,200 and 1,700 passengers. You'll enjoy all the amenities of a large cruise ship — such as multiple pools, restaurants and bars, and spa and fitness facilities — without feeling inundated with many thousands of fellow cruisers.

Best cruise for history lovers: Viking in the Eastern Mediterranean

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Eastern Mediterranean cruises of a week or more immerse you in multiple ancient civilizations. They take you to the historical places you have traveled to see, including several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Extraordinary itineraries visit Athens for the Acropolis, Istanbul for the Blue Mosque and the Topkapi Palace, and Kusadasi for the impressive ancient city of Ephesus and sites associated with the Virgin Mary. Dubrovnik, Croatia's medieval Old Town (a filming location for HBO's "Game of Thrones") will wow you. From Naples, Italy, you can explore the ancient city of Pompeii.

Cruises that start or end in Rome will treat you to such sights as the Colosseum and the Vatican.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise shore excursions

True history lovers will not be satisfied with only a week in this rich landscape. Choose Viking for your Eastern Mediterranean cruise, and look for longer itineraries, such as the 15-day "Ancient Mediterranean Antiquities" sailings throughout 2024, 2025 and 2026. The one-way sailing between Rome and Istanbul hits most of the ancient civilization highlights: Naples and Sicily, Italy; Rhodes, Crete and Athens, Greece; and Ephesus, Troy and Istanbul, Turkey.

Viking also offers complimentary shore excursions in every port, so you'll have access to knowledgeable guides who can explain the historical sites you're touring. On board, you'll find a comfortable home base on Viking's 930-passenger identical ships, with multiple included dining venues, inviting lounges with Scandinavian-inspired decor, and comfortable cabins with thoughtful details, such as quiet-closing drawers and heated bathroom floors.

Best cruise for explorers: Celebrity Cruises in the Holy Land

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Note: Many cruise lines have altered Holy Land itineraries for 2024 to exclude Israel or canceled the sailings completely. However, most lines still have Holy Land voyages, including Israel, on their schedules for 2025.

Travelers who really want to double down on the ancient civilizations should look for longer Eastern Mediterranean cruises that combine Greece, Turkey and Italy with port calls in Egypt, Jordan and Israel. Depending on the specific Holy Land itinerary, you might see Cairo and the pyramids of Giza, Jordan's ancient rose-hewed rock city of Petra, and biblical locations in and around Jerusalem.

Celebrity Cruises is a terrific choice for your Holy Land cruise, as the company offers 10- and 11-night Egypt and Israel sailings. For example, a 10-night, round-trip Athens cruise visits Haifa and Ashdod, Israel (for Jerusalem) and Alexandria, Egypt; it has overnights in each port except Haifa. The extra time in port allows for overnight tours, so you can venture farther into each country to see all the key sites. The 11-night version adds a stop in Kusadasi for a visit to Ephesus.

Celebrity's ships are known for their foodie culture, with multiple specialty restaurants, as well as a happening bar scene. (Do not miss the martini flights.) With a range of rooms, from windowless inside cabins to comfortable suites, you can tour the Holy Land at any price point.

Best cruise for culture vultures: Norwegian Cruise Line in the Western Mediterranean

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

For foodies, fashionistas and art lovers, it's hard to top a Western Mediterranean cruise to the renowned resort towns and famed coastal cities of Italy, France and Spain.

This is your opportunity to see Antoni Gaudi's fantastical Sagrada Familia church and other creations in Barcelona; visit Michelangelo's David sculpture and other Renaissance treasures in Florence, Italy; learn about the iconic film festival in dreamy Cannes, France; and stroll through the beautiful walled city of Dubrovnik.

You can shop for Italian, French and Spanish designer fashion when you're not dining on the best Italian pasta and gelato you've ever tasted (or bouillabaisse and escargot in France, or paella and tapas in Spain). All are accompanied by local wines, of course.

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a variety of Western Mediterranean cruises to key ports in Spain, Italy and France. Norwegian Escape sails the Mediterranean in the spring and fall of 2025. It offers 10- and 11-night cruises that call on a variety of major ports.

For example, 11-night cruises on select dates in 2025 sail from Barcelona to Trieste, Italy. They visit Palma de Mallorca, Spain; Cannes; Florence, Rome, Naples and Taormina (Messina), Italy; Valletta, Malta; Corfu, Greece; and Dubrovnik and Split, Croatia.

It's a shame that the itinerary has no sea days because the ship offers plenty to keep cruisers busy on board. There's a wealth of dining options, from a French date-night restaurant to a tapas bar. There's also a water park, a ropes course and a spa with a salt room and a snow room.

Best cruise for families: Royal Caribbean in the Mediterranean

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

When looking for a cruise with children , you'll want to have a mix of time exploring on land and time playing on the ship. Ships offer kids clubs as well as attractions like video arcades and waterslides. Look for an itinerary that includes one or more fun-filled days at sea.

Kids will enjoy such sights as the Colosseum, where they might pretend that they are gladiators; the flower market in Nice, France; and the Leaning Tower of Pisa (on a shore excursion from Livorno, Italy). They will also enjoy visiting the beaches in the Greek islands and eating pizza in Naples. If you can find a cruise that includes the Italian seaside villages of Cinque Terre (accessible from Genoa, Livorno and Portofino), fans of Disney's animated feature "Luca" will be ecstatic.

Family favorite Royal Caribbean has a variety of ships and itineraries sailing around Europe, but a top option for 2025 is a seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise aboard Allure of the Seas. The round-trip itinerary departs from Rome. Additional ports of call include Naples and La Spezia, Italy (for Florence); Palma de Mallorca; and Marseille, France.

Family-friendly entertainment on board is plentiful. On sea days, you can access three main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean

Y ou might think the best time to cruise the Mediterranean would be summer because that's when the most ships are cruising in Europe. However, I'd argue that other times of the year are better.

Ships cruise in the Med year-round, so there's never a time when you can't cruise at all. You'll find the most ships and itinerary choices in summer during peak season and the fewest during winter's offseason. Spring and fall are considered the shoulder seasons when the Mediterranean cruise season is gearing up or winding down.

Considering price, weather, crowds and choices of ships and ports, I believe the best time to cruise the Mediterranean is during the shoulder season. Specifically, I prefer April. As your decision might be based on entirely different factors, let's dive into the variables to determine the best time for you to head to the region and hop on a cruise ship.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Introduction to Mediterranean geography

The Mediterranean Sea consists of 11 smaller seas. Shopping for Mediterranean cruises can be confusing because some cruise lines like to label their itineraries according to the smaller sea names.

You might find cruises to the Adriatic, between Italy's east coast and the central European countries of Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania; these will take you to ports such as Venice, Italy, and Dubrovnik, Croatia. Aegean cruises traverse the large open sea between Greece and Turkey and go as far south as Crete, with stops in Athens and Santorini in Greece and Istanbul in Turkey. Sailings through the Ionian Sea, located between the sole of Italy's boot and western Greece, bring you to the Italian island of Sicily and the Greek island of Corfu.

All of these cruise destinations are considered Mediterranean, along with Monaco, the southern coasts of France and Spain and even Israel (note that some cruise lines have canceled port calls to Israel for 2024 due to the conflict in Israel and Palestine). Ports in Portugal are also included in Mediterranean cruise itineraries. Even though it doesn't have any coastline on the Mediterranean Sea, Portugal is considered part of the Mediterranean region.

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean based on choices of ships and itineraries

Cruise lines that sail the region all year include Viking , MSC Cruises , Costa Cruises , Celestyal Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line . But while you might be able to cruise the Mediterranean in winter, your choice of ports is somewhat limited. We found no sailings to the popular ports of Corfu, Dubrovnik or Koper, Slovenia, in December or January.

Most of the winter offerings cruise the western ports of Italy, plus France and westward to Barcelona. A handful of longer itineraries sail from Athens or include Istanbul, western Turkey, Israel and even Alexandria, Egypt. Among popular cruise lines, only Viking includes stops in Santorini in winter, and only Costa offers cruises that include Venice in winter. Norwegian's winter Mediterranean itineraries are focused on Spain and Portugal.

Spring and early summer bring more ships and more port choices. Beginning in March, we found dozens of ships scheduled to visit Venice, Corfu and Santorini. Holland America , Princess Cruises , Seabourn , Oceania Cruises and Regent Seven Seas Cruises all have ships ready to sail the Med in March. In April, the list of mainstream, premium and luxury lines cruising Mediterranean waters grows larger and includes Windstar , Royal Caribbean , Silversea and Celebrity Cruises .

By June, the choice of cruise lines and itineraries is at its peak. Among the mainstream lines, only Carnival Cruise Line is still absent in June, opting instead to sail a short season of nine- to 11-night cruises in September and October.

Most ships stay in Europe through summer before beginning a global dispersion between October and November. Disney Cruise Line is the first to leave, with its last summer Mediterranean sailing usually falling in July. Celebrity is among the last to leave, often continuing its Mediterranean cruises well into December and even January, incorporating the holiday season.

If your dream is to see Venice or Santorini or to cruise with one of the mainstream lines, you can rule out winter but should find ample choices between March and October. By the end of November, the number of ships calling at Mediterranean ports has dropped to winter levels.

The best time for a Mediterranean sailing based on prices and crowds

If your ideal Mediterranean cruise doesn't include crowds, winter is a good choice, other than December holiday weeks. But most travelers will prefer a little more warmth and a larger choice of ports while still prioritizing a good price and lighter crowds.

Across the board, from mainstream to luxury, Mediterranean cruise fares peak in June, July and August. Prices for big-ship cruises varied by as much as $60 per person, per night between spring and summer sailings. On luxury lines like Silversea, spring cruise fares were hundreds of dollars cheaper per person, per night compared to summer fares. March sees an upward tick in rates due to spring break travel. The best deals we found outside of winter fell in April and November.

To decide what crowds would look like in various months, we looked at two popular ports where the effect of multiple ships is felt the most — Santorini and Venice. Visit Santorini in June or July, and you will find yourself fighting for breathing room among as many as 15,000 other cruise ship passengers.

Compare that with an April or November stop there, where the daily cruise passenger load tops out at around 3,000. We found days in April when only one or two midsize ships were scheduled to be in port.

I've been to Santorini when four midsize ships (approximately 5,000 passengers) were in port and found it challenging to walk through the narrow maze of shops, restaurants and hotels. It was crowded enough that I was concerned about returning to the ship on time because the lines at the cable car that takes cruise passengers down the cliffs to the tender dock were so long. With 15,000 people in port, I don't know how you'd be able to walk through town at all. Santorini is a decent-size island, but most of the things cruisers want to see are perched on the narrow rim of the cliffs.

Venice has recently cut back on its cruise tourism capacity, in part by forcing some ships to dock in alternate ports and bring guests to the city by bus. We included passenger counts from Venice, Trieste and Ravenna, Italy, and found June numbers as high as 6,000 passengers arriving but as low as 4,000. Cruise passenger arrivals in April are typically below 3,000 per day. The numbers are lower than Santorini — but then, Venice has a far more complicated crowd control scenario.

If avoiding high prices and crowd congestion is your priority, rule out the summer months and stick with either winter or the shoulder seasons of spring and fall.

The best time to cruise the Med based on weather

Temperatures remain moderate across most of the Mediterranean year-round, but even Istanbul can be chilly, with an average high temperature of 48 degrees in January. Athens, Rome, Barcelona and most of the Greek islands see temperatures in the mid- to upper 50s in December and January, warming slightly in February.

Summer temperatures can be brutal in the larger cities. Athens regularly reaches 90 degrees and higher in July and August. Rome and Barcelona average roughly 2 degrees cooler than that in summer.

Rain is more common across the Mediterranean in October and November than most other months, but the average monthly rainfall, even in fall, is 3 inches or less. The northern ports in the Adriatic see a bit more rain than most of the Med. Don't forget the famed Acqua Alta, or mega-tides in Venice, which will leave you sloshing through St. Mark's Square in rubber boots. Though a genuinely rare occurrence, the high tides are most likely to happen in November and December, making them a concern when booking a cruise on one of the handful of ships with November stops in Venice.

If chilly, hot or wet weather is a deciding factor for your Mediterranean cruise, rule out January, February and December for the chill, July and August for the heat and October, November and December for rain and tides. That leaves March, April, May, June and September as the best weather months for cruising in the Mediterranean.

Bottom line

Everyone has their own reasoning for the timing of a cruise. Yours might include traveling while school is out or maximizing time at the beach. Perhaps you are loyal to one particular cruise line or have your heart set on cruising on a newly launched ship.

Whatever your reasons, there is not a bad time to cruise the Mediterranean. My favorite is April for the confluence of reasonable fares, pleasant weather, manageable crowds and an abundance of itinerary and ship choices, but I have loved sailings in other months as well.

My advice is simple: Even if I think shoulder season months are the best time to cruise the Mediterranean, go when it works best for you and your travel partners. Because a dream cruise in Europe, even with less-than-ideal weather or annoying crowds, is better than no cruise at all.

The most popular time to cruise to Europe is during the summer months, but the shoulder seasons of spring and fall are prime times to see the continent with fewer crowds. Cruise lines sail to Europe year-round, with special voyages to view the northern lights, visit holiday markets and other wintry wonders, but there are notably less sailings during the months of January through February.

The majority of oceangoing cruise lines offer itineraries in Europe, crisscrossing the countries of Northern, Eastern and Western Europe. Princess Cruises, Celebrity, Norwegian, Regent, Azamara, Silversea, Royal Caribbean, Crystal, Holland America and more cruise lines have itineraries here. Europe is also a popular destination on river cruise lines such as Viking, Avalon, Emerald, Scenic, AmaWaterways, Uniworld and more, heading to a number of rivers including the Danube, Rhine or Douro.

Lots of sightseeing in Europe is done on foot down cobblestone streets -- pack comfortable shoes. Consider bringing clothes for both sightseeing by day and attending the opera at night, if that’s your thing. A simple pashmina or shawl for women helps keep out the chill and covers shoulders for cathedral or mosque visits. For more tips: 10 Must-Pack Items for a European Cruise .

Travel + Leisure readers looking to explore beyond the tried-and-true love these ships as a comfortable, and even luxurious way to see the world.

How Voting Works

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Over 186,000 T+L readers completed the 2024 survey. A total of more than 700,000 votes were cast across over 8,700 properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

For the cruise category, respondents were asked to rate individual ships; the results were combined to generate scores for cruise lines in different categories based on number of cabins.

Ships were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Cabins/facilities
  • Itineraries/destinations
  • Excursions/activities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

Launched in late summer 2023, the first ship of luxury line Explora Journeys quickly caught readers’ attention and, impressively, was voted into the No. 2 spot in the midsize category in the World’s Best Awards for 2024. “Explora I surpassed all of my expectations,” said one voter. “It feels like a luxury resort at sea. They hit all of the marks for an exceptional experience!”

Shut down by a previous owner and resurrected by renowned luxury travel company Abercrombie & Kent, Crystal made an impressive reentry in the No. 3 spot. Readers lauded Crystal’s cuisine and exceptional service. “What makes this ship unique specifically is the staff,” said one reader. “Onboard they make you feel like you are family and remember every detail of what makes you the person you are.”

That said, it’s hard to displace a line like Viking, noted for its consistency of overall excellence. For a third year in a row, it’s the No. 1 choice of readers in this year’s voting.

When you get on a Viking ship, you know what to expect. There are familiar surroundings, no kids onboard, no casinos, no nickel-and-diming, just overall excellence, say T+L readers. With 10 identical 465-cabin ships and a 11th, 499-cabin ship debuting later in 2024, Viking delivers a winning formula of all-inclusive fares that combine meals, beverages, Wifi, gratuities, and a shore excursion in every port with standout itineraries, too. Those destinations include the Caribbean, Alaska, Southeast Asia, China, South America, Australia, and Scandinavia. Service was an area that got particular raves in this year’s survey. “Experience made us feel like superstars!” said one reader.

A Voyage with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection: Luxury Cruises to the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean offers visitors unbound beauty, culture, and cuisine. Our voyages explore ports and cities throughout this captivating region, many best experienced by cruise.

Rich with history, with monuments and ruins dating back to the earliest civilizations, the Mediterranean moves at a slower pace than its northern neighbors. Time-honored traditions dating back centuries intersect with the present day in the most engaging way. Discover the cliff-clinging pastel houses of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, the blue-domed whitewashed churches of Santorini, the massive columns of the Pantheon, or the priceless treasures of the Vatican Museums. With harbors framed by limestone cliffs, charming cobblestone fishing villages, and miles of pristine beaches, relax and experience it all on a voyage with The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

With well-planned routes and inclusions, a memorable Mediterranean cruise from The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection offers all voyagers the ideal combination of destinations, inclusions, onboard amenities, and world-class service that can only be offered by The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.

The 10 under-the-radar places a luxury travel planner is recommending to her clients this year

  • I'm a luxury travel planner, and these are destinations I think will be popular this year.
  • For a beach getaway in Europe , I recommend Sardinia, Corsica, and Costa Navarino
  • I suggest Niseko, Japan, for outdoor enthusiasts or Ticino, Switzerland, as a Lake Como alternative.

Insider Today

With Americans spending more on travel and experiences, now could be just the time to book a trip.

I'm a luxury travel advisor, and I book five-star hotels and luxury vacations around the world for wealthy and high-profile clients.

My clients always ask me about under-the-radar luxury destinations that feel exclusive and are not overly crowded by tourists.

Here are a few places I'm recommending to my clients in 2024.

Ticino, Switzerland

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

This charming Italian-speaking region is also known as Switzerland's "Little Italy."

I recommend visiting Swissminiatur in Melide, an open-air miniature museum that's great for families with kids. I also suggest visiting the well-manicured Parco Ciani, a beautiful park with statues and fountains that overlook Lago di Lugano.

The region's small lakeside town Ascona is not to be missed. Take a boat cruise there and have lunch with a view of the cafe-lined promenade situated on Lago Maggiore.

You can also take a short boat ride to the Brissago Islands, which consist of two islands. Only Isola Grande is open to the public. There, you can walk around the botanical garden and have a meal at the dreamy, neoclassical Villa Emden .

Sardinia, Italy

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Sardinia is also known for its nightlife and white-sand beaches. This island in the Mediterranean is also a hot spot for celebrities.

The northern side of the island is dotted with upscale beach clubs and luxury resorts such as Romazzino, Costa Smeralda, and Hotel Cala di Volpe.

Botswana, Africa

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Most visitors go to Kenya for an African safari but Botswana is better suited for a high-end safari experience with luxury accommodations since there are a limited number of camps.

You can spot the Big 5 in the Okavango Delta, which offers a good mix of land and water safaris. Or visit Chobe National Park, which has a very high population of elephants.

Niseko, Japan

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Niseko offers some of the best powder for skiing in the winter. In the summer, the area is known for its outdoor activities.

It has natural hot springs, river activities, golf courses, hiking, and mountain biking. If you're up for an adventure in the spring or summer, I recommend climbing to the top of Mt. Yotei, a volcano and one of the famous mountains for skiing. The hike is not for the faint of heart!

Many people visit Tokyo to see the cherry blossoms , but you can also see them in Niseko. They're often in full bloom at the beginning of May.

Corsica, France

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Corsica has the perfect mix of rugged landscapes, hiking trails, rich history, and lively beaches. Its Plage de Palombaggia has stunning clear blue waters and a long stretch of white sand.

Corsica also has several vineyards — including a few along the coast — so you can take scenic tours and go wine tasting on the island.

Costa Navarino, Greece

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Skip overcrowded Greek islands like Santorini and Mykonos. Instead, vacation in Costa Navarino, a coastal town in the Peloponnese known for its world-class golf courses and epic outdoor adventures.

If you want to shop for artisanal goods made by local designers, stop by Navarino Agora, a new outdoor marketplace with an open-air cinema.

Jose Ignacio, Uruguay

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Jose Ignacio is a chic beach town that comes alive after Christmas (during the region's summer season) when locals from Uruguay and nearby Argentina flock here for vacation.

The former fishing village is anchored by the faro, or lighthouse, near Playa del Faro Jose Ignacio — my favorite beach for people-watching and kite surfing. Spend a day soaking up the sun and check out the trendy seaside bars and restaurants.

Vals, Switzerland

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

Vals is a small, quiet alpine village in Graubünden with only about 1,000 inhabitants.

It's a hiker's paradise with wide open landscapes and rolling green hills. Try the moderate hike around Lake Zervreila at the base of the gondola in the center of Vals — you'll be rewarded with spectacular lake and village views.

A crown jewel of Vals is 7132 Hotel, an architectural marvel designed by prominent Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. The hotel is famous for its thermal spa made of local quartzite.

West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

This waterfront district in Hong Kong is an art hub with multiple major arts and performance venues . M+ and Hong Kong Palace Museum are two of the newer museums that opened in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

The Xiqu Centre in The West Kowloon Cultural District is an especially cool performing arts venue where you can watch a Cantonese opera.

Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

luxury mediterranean cruises 2022

This warm and sunny region is perfect for foodies and wine lovers, with over 100 wineries and many restaurants that serve farm-to-table food.

It's one of New Zealand's oldest wine regions and a great alternative to European ones. The vast majority of New Zealand's cabernet sauvignon and merlot are produced in Hawke's Bay.

Plus, the area's flat trails make it ideal for wine and food tours by bicycle.

Kids will love the National Aquarium of New Zealand and Napier's Marine Parade, an outdoor playground with a skate park, gardens, and mini-golf.

The Rise of the ‘Earlymoon’

Many couples are no longer waiting until after their weddings to take a trip.

A couple smiles at the camera while holding fishing rods, with the ocean and horizon in the backdrop.

By Allison Duncan

One month before their July 2023 wedding, Shrestha Maharaj, 28, an analytics and insights manager based in South Africa, and Sumeeth Suthurgam, 31, a senior digital design lead, took an earlymoon.

The couple spent a long weekend in Umdloti, a small resort village along the northern coast of Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa, just a 45-minute drive from their home. Ms. Maharaj described their earlymoon as a “break from the chaos,” where they enjoyed electric scooter riding, table tennis playing, beach walking and even practicing their first dance. “A change of scenery was necessary for that,” Ms. Maharaj said, laughing. “It’s amazing what that’ll do even when you’re still in the same city.”

For couples who want to bask in the engagement period before their weddings, going on a prenuptial trip — or an earlymoon — is becoming increasingly popular. It’s different from both a mini-moon — a quick getaway after the wedding to decompress — and a honeymoon, in which a couple takes a longer, more elaborate post-wedding vacation.

“We really just needed a break and wanted to de-stress before our wedding,” Ms. Maharaj said of their earlymoon. “Indian weddings can be intense. We had four wedding events over three days and D.I.Y.-ed a lot of it.”

Many hotels and resorts now tailor certain packages to earlymooners. Hyatt Centric Faneuil Hall Boston , for example, began offering an earlymoon package, “Get Away Before the Big Day,” last summer. The three-night stay, starting at $800, includes a day spa pass for two; a picnic at Boston Public Garden; dinner at the hotel’s in-house restaurant, Jules on Devonshire ; and a welcome bottle of champagne.

“Earlymooners just want quality time with each other, so couples have loved the stress-free aspect of it,” said Kevin Matheson, the general manager of Hyatt Centric Faneuil Hall Boston. “Some even joke they’ll be back for their babymoons.”

Stanly Ranch , a Napa Valley resort in California, has seen a 15 percent increase yearly since opening in 2022 in couples spending their earlymoons there, many from within driving distance in the San Francisco Bay Area, said Laura McIver, the resort’s general manager. At The Inn at Mattei’s Tavern in Los Olivos, Calif., a roughly two-hour drive from Los Angeles, there has been a 25 percent spike in couples booking stays before their weddings since it opened in February 2023, said Joern Schwaiger, the inn’s general manager.

And at Ashford Castle in Mayo, Ireland, the earlymoon package — starting at $8,500 — includes two nights at the hotel’s private boathouse; a boat excursion and a picnic on Chief’s Island ; a rose quartz couples massage; and a private wine tasting in the property’s wine cellar. The hotel has also arranged private consultations with the Irish jewelry designer Nigel O’Reilly for earlymooners who want to commission custom pieces of jewelry to commemorate their upcoming nuptials.

“Before this year, we would have simply called an earlymoon a vacation or getaway,” said Nicole Janoff, a senior manager of leisure travel at Magma Global , a travel agency in New York, who credits social media posts from couples for the 10 percent increase in travel inquiries from earlymooners that Magma Global has received so far this year. “The earlymoon trend represents a shift in how couples approach their wedding prep and prioritize their time together before the big day.”

Ms. Janoff also mentioned that typically couples take their earlymoons six to eight weeks before their weddings, following the bridal shower and bachelor/bachelorette parties. She has sent couples to places like Montauk, N.Y., Bermuda and Aspen, Colo., for spring and summer nuptials, while couples marrying in the fall or winter often travel to Mexico and the Caribbean. “No matter which destination they choose, there is always a massage appointment made,” she said, jokingly.

Those with longer engagements who want to go on earlymoons tend to travel several months before their wedding. Jillian Moya, 36, a corporate accounting software trainer, and Reggie Blackburn, 40, who works for the Department of Justice, are marrying on New Year’s Eve in their home state of Florida. Last month, they embarked on an earlymoon that started in London, made a stop in Croatia and ended with a Mediterranean cruise through Italy and Greece.

“We initially wanted a destination wedding but fell in love with a local venue so decided to marry in Florida,” Ms. Moya said. “Our Europe trip was the perfect romantic getaway. We enjoyed peaceful times together before diving into full-on wedding planning.”

Tom Marchant, a founder and the chief executive of the luxury travel company Black Tomato , said earlymoons unlock more destination options as couples aren’t traditionally bound to a specific post-wedding time frame.

He organized an earlymoon to Bhutan and India for a client couple six months before their August 2023 wedding. Then, after the couple’s summer nuptials in Newport, R.I., they took a New England road trip through Rhode Island, Maine and Connecticut.

“Even those who have wedding planners feel the heat as the date approaches, so we find people are more at ease with some distance between the big day and the earlymoon,” said Mr. Marchant, who has noticed a 13 percent uptick in earlymoon inquiries through his company this year. “Traveling right after a wedding can be frantic. An earlymoon strips away the noise from that and allows more focus on spending meaningful time with each other.”

Dri Buono Patel, 28, a corporate health care manager in Marlton, N.J., and her husband, Matthew Patel, 29, a manager at the global consulting firm EY, planned an eight-day earlymoon to Maui in September 2022, nine months before their wedding.

“We are an ‘any excuse to travel’ type of couple,” said Ms. Patel, who also took a two-week honeymoon to Italy with her husband after their wedding. “Being engaged is so special, but the logistics, decision-making and nuances of planning a wedding take some of that excitement away. The trip gave us time to appreciate this phase of life.”

The couple rented a Jeep for a self-guided food tour during their earlymoon, trying banana cream pie at Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop; fresh poke from South Maui Fish Company; fresh baked slices of bread from Aunty Sandy’s Banana Bread; and coconut ice cream from Coconut Glen’s. They also snorkeled, hiked and took a sunset dinner cruise.

“Everyone kept asking us if we were on our honeymoon, and we’d giggle,” Ms. Patel said. “It was a great escape from wedding planning, although my husband would add that it was also an extra expense on top of the wedding and honeymoon.”

Couples that can afford both an earlymoon and a honeymoon can enjoy “two distinct phases of celebration and relaxation surrounding their wedding,” Ms. Janoff added. “The earlymoon provides a pre-wedding retreat, while the honeymoon serves as a post-wedding getaway to mark the beginning of married life.”
