In honor of Women's History Month, we're celebrating the innovator behind one of our favorite travel brands. Actor and entrepreneur Shay Mitchell founded Béis in 2018, with a goal to make products that are chic, functional, and affordable. Her popular line now includes both stylish luggage and bags suited for everyday use, no matter what's on your busy agenda. Condé Nast Traveler editors have been fans of the brand for years, especially the viral Weekender bag that you've likely seen all over social media—simply put, the thoughtful details and smart features incorporated into Mitchell's products will make your travels smoother.

I recently caught up with Mitchell to find out what inspired her to start a travel brand and ask her advice for parents on the go . She also shared what she's most excited about for Béis in 2023, including a few upcoming collections she can't wait to launch. Read on for all of that, plus Mitchell's own in-flight essentials and best-kept packing tips.

What was the inspiration behind starting Béis?

When I was growing up, I was obsessed with bags—makeup bags, purses, my mom's suitcases, my grandma's hat boxes, all of it. I've been very fortunate in my life to be able to travel to a lot of places from an early age and with that experience has come a lot of different suitcases and bags. Over the years, I've gathered these mental notes of what would have been perfect to have on a trip or what could have been better about the bag I was currently traveling with.

I began to think that I could create the product that I've always wanted for myself and that I think other people would enjoy. Nothing excites me more—I could talk about bags and zippers and all of it forever. It’s my passion.

When you started creating products designed for parents, was there something you felt was missing in the market?

All of the designs come from my experience. A lot of time I’m writing it or drawing it down on a napkin or whatever is near me at the moment. It started out with the Weekender—all I wanted was to have a bag that would allow me to separate my shoes from the rest of my clothes, so I drew it myself. The next idea came from my frustration with my bag always falling off my carry-on and everything inside spilling, so I made sure our Weekender had a trolley sleeve so it could easily attach to the handle of my carry-on. All of this continued when I was expecting my first child and I was looking to buy a diaper bag. I wanted something that didn't scream “this is a diaper bag.”  I wanted something quieter, chic, and more versatile.

The fun and amazing part of Béis is that I can design things I truly want to use myself. That’s really how the Béis Baby collection came to be. And now as my kids are growing up, we designed a new Kids' collection that will be coming out this year. The Kids' collection is inspired by things I’m noticing now that my daughter Atlas wants in her own bags. It will feature new luggage and bags made for kids to make things like everyday activities, going to school, and traveling easier for both kids and parents.

A bag.

This weekender was Béis’s first product, and a positive indicator of where the brand was headed. It is thoughtfully designed, from the overall look to the smart features: A trolley sleeve on the bag has a zipper so you can use it as a pocket when you're not attaching to a suitcase. A second exterior pocket is large enough for a phone and other small essentials, and the bottom compartment keeps shoes or dirty clothes separate.

What women do you look up to for business advice and inspiration?

My mom is my superwoman. I’ve always looked up to her and seen what she’s been able to do, and that gave me the courage to start this business.

Also, my team of women that work beside me. I learn so much from them each and every day. I read in a book once that you should hire people that are smarter than you and that’s exactly what I’ve done. They’ve allowed me to learn and adapt so quickly. When the pandemic hit, we had to think about changing the trajectory of our brand. We didn't want Béis to be something that people only think about when they’re buying a plane ticket. We’re not just hard luggage, we’re the on-the-go travel brand for anything–if you’re leaving your house to go to the grocery store, we have produce bags for you, if you’re headed to the gym, we have a gym bag for you, and if you’re going on a walk and want a sling bag that will hold your water bottle, we have that, too.

I wouldn't be able to do all the things we're able to do so quickly and so well if I didn't have this incredible, pretty small team with me.

If someone’s unfamiliar with Béis, what must-have products would you recommend they add to their collection?

Our core items like our Carry-On Roller, our Weekender, and our Cosmetic Case. I've tried and tested every carry-on on the market and ours stands out because of the important small details, like our cushioned handle. When I’m running from one side of the airport to another, that comfortable cushion on my heavy suitcase makes a big difference. It also has a built-in weight indicator—when you lift up the bag, it will turn red if it’s over 50 pounds.

Our Weekender was my first baby that I designed— it’s just that perfect bag that I can fill to the brim. Another favorite product of mine is our Cosmetic Case that features a handy mirror that stands on its own. There's also a separate brush compartment to keep makeup brushes organized.

What’s one Béis product everyone should know about?

We added a hidden water bottle pocket to our Sport Sling bag. In the past, I’ve had to hold my water bottle when I’m wearing a fanny pack on a hike, but  I want to be completely hands-free. The material of the hidden pocket is stretchy and durable enough to actually hold my water bottle while walking.

I really do listen to what our consumers are asking for. I read our feedback on our website and all of the comments on our social media. Do I think it's healthy? Probably not. But do I like seeing what people are saying? Absolutely. That two-way street of communication is so helpful—we use their advice and their own experience to improve our products.

This also helps inform our new collections—like our spring color collection that’s coming soon. It will include hard-side rollers, weekenders, and cosmetic bags in fun sherbet colorways like citron, orange, and lavender.

Step one: Never pack the night before. There’s no need for the added stress—packing in advance will prevent you from feeling overwhelmed before you travel.

Step two: Take photos of your outfits. Put aside some basics that you know you can mix and match with multiple outfits. I like packing versatile basics like white T-shirts, a white button-up, a leather jacket, black boots, and a classic pair of heels. Then, when you’re on your trip you don’t have to waste any time figuring out what to wear. What’s worse than realizing you carried around an entire suitcase of clothes and accessories that you didn’t touch?

Do you have any tips for new parents traveling with their baby for the first time?

I highly recommend packing cubes . I have separate packing cubes for each of my kids, Atlas and Rome, and it makes life so much easier. Instead of having to open the suitcase and sort through which items are Atlas’s and which are Rome’s, you can just grab the right packing cube and I know exactly where everything is and what belongs to who.

What’s always in your carry-on?

I have been stranded so many times from either missed flights or cancelled flights, so I pack everything from snacks to makeup wipes to lip balm to hand lotion. I bring plenty of moisturizer to keep my skin hydrated, especially when I'm traveling to different climates.

For longer flights, I like to wear a pair of compression socks , a neck pillow, and an eye mask always (great for the plane, but this also comes in handy if your hotel doesn’t have room darkening curtains). I also always have our Comfort Kit with me—a clear travel case that includes two soft, adjustable face masks, our Hot Mess wipes that are ideal for wiping down your plane seat or tray table, a hand sanitizer, and a No-Touch keychain that can be used to touch surfaces like elevator buttons or doors for you. I also always bring my gua sha with me to give myself a quick lymphatic massage when I get to my destination.

It’s only natural that we bloat or experience some swelling on a flight, so I make sure to stay hydrated. I drink HydraLyte daily—electrolyte tablets that can be added right to your water—but especially when I’m flying. I also always travel with dandelion tea : It reduces water weight, detoxifies the liver, and helps reduce inflammation in the body.

What are you most excited about for your brand in 2023?

It’s very exciting when you get to work with a brand or a company that you are really proud of—especially when that means joining forces with another woman. Revolve’s chief brand officer Raissa Gerona is one of my closest friends and it’s amazing that we have Béis being sold on Revolve . It's so awesome that we can come together as two strong, independent women who can learn from one another and support one another. We’re working on a bunch of fun things together this year and it’s really exciting.

Being surrounded by all these strong, encouraging, and supportive women that are not only my friends but just incredible business women is really amazing. To be able to partner and work with them on projects and upcoming things that you're both excited for is really great. I absolutely love everything I work on and that’s something I’m very grateful for.

The Strategy Behind Shay Mitchell’s Travel Brand Béis

Actress Shay Mitchell sits among two olive-coloured suitcases and weekender bag from her brand Béis.

Actress, entrepreneur and executive producer Shay Mitchell launched her lifestyle and travel brand Béis in October 2018 with the vision of catering to an on-the-go lifestyle by creating bags, luggage and travel accessories she could not find in the market. In just five years, the brand is nearing $200 million in profitable gross revenue by the end of 2023.

This summer, the brand hosted a tour of pop-ups, experimenting with physical retail and in-store creative marketing moments in three North American cities and will be doing a holiday pop-up in New York with Shopify.

“We have an exceptionally high return customer rate, far higher than what is typical in our category,” Béis president, Adeela Hussain Johnson, tells BoF. “As we look to the future, we will continue to engage with our current consumers in a way that builds loyalty and trust while investing meaningfully in brand building and awareness-driving initiatives. [...] Our objectives as an organisation are to maintain the momentum of our growth trajectory, but to do so responsibly and in a way that is both sustainable and scalable, long-term.”

Since its launch, Béis has built a significant direct-to-consumer e-commerce offering, with the majority of traffic to Béis’ website primarily driven by growth within paid search, paid social and affiliate marketing, supported by Mitchell’s 37 million-strong follower base. Béis works with retail partners — Nordstrom , Revolve , Bloomingdale’s and, most recently, Canada’s Indigo — to diversify their consumer reach.

“DTC will continue to be the lion’s share of our business, as we are a digitally native brand and we intend that to continue. However, we have learned through our pop-ups in the last two years that our consumer does love IRL experiences and interacting with our brand through the brick-and-mortar channel. So, we will continue to learn and expand that channel as it makes sense for different categories within our portfolio,” adds Hussain Johnson.

The pop-up tour is one strand of the brand’s exploration of expanded marketing arenas, alongside the likes of billboard advertising and major brand partnerships, such as its collaboration with Mattel and Barbie The Movie around the launch of the Greta Gerwig blockbuster. Béis is also working with innovative materials, exploring the likes of cactus leather in its Premium Collection, which launched on November 8. Product lines have also expanded to include lines for travelling parents and their children, as well as baby and pet bags.

“We are investing significantly in R&D and testing to understand how we can continue to improve and expand our portfolio with materials that allow us to achieve durable, long-lasting products,” says Hussain Johnson. “Though the majority of our business is in our classics, which are always around, we recognise that we do drop seasonal collections and not everyone needs 10 weekenders. So, we are in the process of exploring how we can offer consumers ways to give their bags and accessories a second life.”

Now, BoF sits down with the brand’s founder Shay Mitchell to learn more about her strategic vision for the future of the brand.

How do you respond to evolving consumer needs and expectations?

We have an analytics department that gathers all data for the brand. I also gather feedback from my friends, family and my assistant. She will sit in on design meetings and I will ask her: “Would you carry this?” It may seem small but we are a consumer feedback-driven brand, so in addition to hard data, I’m always collecting my own feedback from my immediate circle to better understand how they shop.

We’re still a small enough brand to be nimble. For example, when Covid-19 hit, we had a whole line-up of suitcases that were about to be rolled out, but we paused the drop and reassessed. We make bags for people on-the-go, so with the world drastically changing, we asked ourselves “what are people still going to be doing?” They’re going to be going to markets, to parks, beaches, to the grocery store, so we designed for that. We are not just designing for long-haul, plane travel — whether you’re going on a walk, to the gym, to the grocery store or to work, we have a product for you to make it easier.

It’s also about being able to pick up on cultural moments quickly and what makes us so good at this is our team, whose eyes and ears are always open. We can quickly react to trends or feedback that are relevant, in order stay fresh in the content and product we develop.

How do you test out new category and product ideas?

We create what I call “energy drops”, which is when we try something new and share a smaller run with our consumer. It’s a way to play with ideas and collect feedback and insight from the consumer as to what it is that they like about it, what we can improve upon and what should become a core offering. It’s a nice way to test the waters without having a full-on commitment because we’re not buying heavily into those drops.

We are also starting to do more collaborations for energy drops and those projects offer learnings, too. For example, when we dropped the Barbie The Movie collaboration, some people loved the colour and others loved the glossy finish. They said, “You should do this [finish] for beige and black.” I pocketed that feedback and thought, “Cool. Now I know.”

The first time we did a collab was with the model Elsa Hosk. That process was different because we were not just offering existing bags in new fabrications but designing new bags and prints for a Baby line. It was interesting to get her perspective on what she would design. We had hits and misses on that one, but we played around with print, we played around with the fabric and we created something that Béis had never done before.

How has community feedback guided your design approach?

We have a two-way conversation with our audience. I will post from design meetings and have our community weigh in on colourways or patterns. We take consumer feedback to heart — if we are consistently getting the same feedback about a bag, we will implement changes. We test our bags through the design process and we continue to refine them even once they are on the market.

One of the things we have learnt is that there are people that want to pay a higher price point for a different kind of material, while others will say: “We love this bag. We just wish you could do a more basic, simpler version of it.” All of this feedback helps inform our approach. So, we have our core line, which we have had from the beginning. Then we came out with the Béis-ics, a more simplified design for a Gen-Z consumer at more of an entry price point.

We take consumer feedback to heart — if we are consistently getting the same feedback about a bag, we will implement changes.

Then, this November, we dropped our Premium collection, which offers existing core bag silhouettes in cactus leather fabrications, with elevated design elements. This collection is at a new price point for us. We wanted to design with a more sustainable fabric that looks and feels more premium. I’m curious to see how it is received.

This evolution of various categories at different price points came from consumer feedback. I love the feedback our consumers share. With the help of my team, when we drop a new product, we are keeping our eyes peeled for feedback — and this feedback loop helps us learn for next time. It’s a two-way street that we really value.

How has the Béis brand and your vision for it evolved?

Béis started when I drew up my ideal travel bag on a cocktail napkin while on an airplane, with all the features I had mentally taken notes of over the years, like a key leash or a strap to attach onto your suitcase. With those ideals in mind, we started with our weekenders and our luggage.

Then, when I was pregnant, I needed a diaper bag, so we came out with our baby line. We also created a backpack with a rollout changing pad because sometimes, bathroom facilities are not equipped for parents to change their kids. My elder daughter then started needing her own bags for school, so we moved into the kids’ space — but we added features that add value to the parent, because I know the parent is going to end up carrying the bag.

So, in a lot of ways, we have been (selfishly) designing products for ourselves and our evolving families, but then we go into it with the perspective that those needs can be applied to the consumer who is also looking for functional, good-looking products to make their lives easier while on-the-go. So, we have grown by expanding into new categories that have grown as we have.

What role will a physical retail presence play in growing the brand?

We are majority direct-to-consumer and, until our first pop-up, we had only partnered with Revolve and had a very small section in Nordstrom, which was important for us because I wanted people to be able to touch and feel the product. However, with wholesale accounts, I’m not in control of that retail experience and that’s the part that has been missing for me.

I want our consumers to see how the products live in a room, because if you see it in a store, there’s no lifestyle there. The pop-ups are important because we can create an experience. They allow us to play around, to try something new, to see what works and what doesn’t. It’s not forever; it’s not a commitment.

One day, when we do go into brick and mortar, there will have been a lot of research into where we do it and how we do it. But for right now, I’m having so much fun just doing these timely hits. As a matter of fact, we are currently planning a pop-up with Shopify in New York at the end of November into early December.

What is next for Béis?

I want to be that go-to brand where consumers think, “That’s the place where I go to get what I need to make on-the-go life easier.” Just like how there are certain stores that, if I’m going camping, I know to hit up this specific place and they will have everything I need.

I’m creating bags and accessories to help whenever you leave the house. But I want to make that easier for you. Every single product is thought out. The sky has no limits.

This is a sponsored feature paid for by Béis as part of a BoF partnership.

Shay Mitchell Tells Us About Her Affordable New Line of Travel Bags Called BEIS

shay-mitchell

Shay Mitchell is here with a new travel line that will no doubt inspire you to plan a #Shaycation of your own. The You actress and frequent globetrotter launched her new lifestyle brand BÉIS on Wednesday, October 17, with a seven-piece collection of duffle bags, backpacks, cosmetic cases, passport covers and more that are all priced under $85 and designed with Mitchell’s on-the-go lifestyle in mind.

“It’s a fun thing to not just be the face of the brand but to really be in it. I can literally tell you why I chose the zippers,” Mitchell tells Us of the line, which she has been working on for a year and half. “I am never not on the road. Yes, you can go and buy a luggage that’s beautiful but expensive, but I want people to go out and see the world and do it with a cute bag that you don’t have to spend a ton on.”

With that in mind, the world traveler had her heart set on creating unisex styles that feature all the little things (think: trolley passthroughs to slip over luggage handles, separate shoe compartments, front-loading bags and hearty zippers) she has always looked for in the market but hasn’t been able to find — especially at an affordable price.

“I was really focused on the little details that either don’t exist or exist at a really high price point,” she says. “It shouldn’t be that expensive.”

With a raw beige canvas (hence the name BÉIS) she personally sourced in Asia serving as the foundation of the collection, Mitchell hopes the designs have a universal, timeless appeal. So while she’ll be dropping some colorful pieces for the holidays (and her vegan leather luggage tags and passport covers brighten things up!), she is planning on keeping it simple.

Sure, this front-loading (Mitchell likes to fold — not roll! — her clothes and slide them in) black canvas bag is great for a short trip, but the actress also calls it the “ultimate supped up gym bag.” “I love this bag for working out,” she says. “My shoes can go on the side. It has a secret pocket for valuables and a laptop protector too.” $83, nordstrom.com

The Cosmetic Case

“I always wished there was a mirror in every single makeup kit, so this comes with one,” Mitchell tells Us of the train case-like design. It also includes a detachable brush holder, so you don’t have to keep flipping back and forth between your tools and your products. And while there are a couple more colorways coming just in time for the holidays in November, she’s keeping things simple to start with this vegan leather beige. $38, beistravel.com

As an avid globe-trotter, I'm always planning my next trip — and hunting for the best luggage to take with me. I pride myself on being a smart packer (you'll almost never catch me checking a bag), but I often find myself frustrated by even the best duffel bags , where my belongings inevitably succumb to disorganization and wrinkles.

So when I first learned about The Hanging Duffle from Beis , the luggage line founded by actress Shay Mitchell , I leapt at the chance to try it out courtesy of the brand. Its standout feature? Built-in shelves for easy organizing.

Equal parts duffel, travel organizer, personal item, and full-on closet, this travel bag is unlike anything else I've ever packed. It starts out looking like a small weekender duffel, but rather than unzipping straight down the middle, it unzips all the way around and opens frontwise. From there, you grab on to two hooks, and large built-in shelves accordion up and out in a magical display that feels like something straight out of Mary Poppins .

This attention to detail that Beis puts into all its products, like a built-in weight indicator on every carry-on and a removable compartment that doubles as a packing cube on The Convertible Weekender , is clearly on full display with The Hanging Duffle.

Buy It! Beis The Hanging Duffle, $148; beistravel.com

The front of the bag also folds down to reveal two zippered pockets, one mesh and one clear plastic, just right for packing personal items and toiletries. And the smart design doesn't stop there: There's an outside pocket big enough to fit a laptop, a mesh side pocket, a padded and adjustable shoulder strap, and a sleeve that can be unzipped to place the bag over a carry-on handle or zipped to create yet another outside pocket.

Despite the impressive construction, I was still skeptical about how all my belongings would zip back up once the shelves were fully packed. Spoiler alert: I had nothing to worry about.

On a recent long weekend trip back home, I was able to fit everything I needed for my three-day getaway, including a dress, a sweater, jeans, workout clothes, pajamas, socks, underwear, my toiletries, small makeup bag, and even an extra pair of shoes. What's more, it offered the added benefit of keeping my clothes from getting too wrinkled since everything stayed neatly folded.

Since I'd booked my plane ticket last-minute, I went for a cheaper option that didn't allow me to bring a true carry-on. On that front, this duffel really came in extra since it was small enough to count as a personal item and, with just a little bit of cramming, even fit under my seat.

This will undoubtedly be my go-to bag for all future weekend trips. Shop this genius duffel bag for $148 and trust me when I say you will be wowed.

Shay Mitchell Shares Packing Tips, What It's Like Traveling With Her Kids, and the 1 Thing She'll Never Do on a Plane

The "Pretty Little Liars" star chats with Travel + Leisure about her favorite Béis luggage, and how she's hoping to instill a love for travel in her kids, and more.

Shay Mitchell has never been one to sit still — from starring in the buzziest series like Pretty Little Liars , You , and Dollface to co-authoring the novel Bliss and running her own production company Amore & Vita. Her active lifestyle was the motivation behind her launching Béis, best known for its fashionably functional luggage, in 2018.

“People are always moving,” the actress and entrepreneur told Travel + Leisure at a Béis x Shopify pop-up shop event in New York City. “We're not just a travel brand, we're an on-the-go brand — whether it's to the grocery store, to the gym, or traveling, we have something that's going to help you feel more comfortable when you leave the house.”

While she loves “the fact that other people love it as well,” the 36-year-old admits that she “selfishly” designed the products for herself, always traveling with Béis’ original carry-on, packing cubes, and cosmetic case. “I have every single piece and regularly use them – I created it because there was a need for my own use.”

Here are 6 T+L editor-tested and approved luggage pieces from Béis.

When it comes to her packing style, though, Mitchell admits she’s an overpacker — always going for her Béis 29-inch check-in roller. Though she tends to pack last-minute, she’s also uber organized, packing her clothes by outfit and taking photos before folding them in packing cubes. “That way I can look back and figure out what I want to wear that day."

After all, the Canadian has always been struck with a serious case of wanderlust. “My number one love has always been travel,” she said. “Now it’s my kids, and I now get to travel with my kids — it's the best combo.”

The mom of two daughters passed along that love right away by giving both girls travel-themed names. She had first heard the name Atlas for her 4-year-old “from a friend” and immediately knew “that’s exactly what her name is going to be."

For 1-year-old Rome, it was a combination of being a tribute to her grandmother Romaine (“she was my best friend”) and the Italian capital being “one of my favorite places.”

“It all just clicked perfectly and everything felt very meant to be,” she said of her daughter's names.

Mitchell didn’t waste any time taking her kids on the road with her, taking Atlas along on a workt trip to Paris when the baby was just six months old. “From that day until now, she’s been the best traveling companion,” she said. “We have a routine down. She jumps on the luggage and we just stroll through the airport.”

Calling her eldest her “mini me”—a “glam girl” who loves pink, sparkles, and Barbie — she explained it’s simply “in her nature” to be a “super easy” traveler. In fact, Atlas accompanied her mom to New York City for the event, and was spotted in the corner making friends with a baby pup while Mitchell worked. “She came with me on the trip because she and I are like this when we’re traveling,” the actress said, crossing her fingers.

Aisle or window? Aisle because I don't want to be giving anybody a lap dance while trying to go to the bathroom.

Favorite way to pass time on the long flight? Go through your photos and delete!

The number one tip for traveling with kids? Later flights, so they're naturally more tired.  Beauty tip for plane rides?

You are not catching me wearing makeup on a plane — I don’t want clogged pores!

First memorable trip as a kid? Cruise ships — my parents were obsessed with them back in the day. We went to Hawaii and Alaska, which was cool and memorable.

Celeb Check-in

Expanding to a family of four with partner Matte Babel, has definitely changed their travel dynamics. “Rome is like WWE on the airplane from the time the plane takes off to when it lands,” she admitted. “She’s like wrestling me the entire time, but Atlas sleeps and watches movies.”

But it’s their different styles that she loves, especially her younger one’s “wackiness” and “fearlessness” and her older one’s sense of being “super chill.” “They couldn’t be more different and it’s very interesting to see that dynamic,” Mitchell said. “I didn't have a sister growing up but being able to watch it through them is really cool.”

Her favorite place to take them these days is on trips back to Vancouver, where her parents and good friends are. “Now my best friends have kids — a lot of girls — so it’s nice when we bring them all together,” she said. “Plus I get to show them all the places I grew up.”

She has grand plans to show them the world as well, especially Tokyo and Kyoto. “There’s something to do for everybody there,” Mitchell said. “ It's beautiful, super safe, and I love the food—the kids love sushi too. It would be a really cool experience, plus there's Disneyland there.”

Even with a bigger travel group these days, Mitchell is still just as passionate about exploring.

“I'm getting to see the world through both of their eyes,” she said. “Everything is super exciting, but you definitely need a bigger car.”

Russia establishes special site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600

!{Model.Description}

A special production site to fabricate fuel for China’s CFR-600 fast reactor under construction has been established at Russia’s Mashinostroitelny Zavod (MSZ - Machine-Building Plant) in Elektrostal (Moscow region), part of Rosatom’s TVEL Fuel Company.

As part of the project, MSZ had upgraded existing facilities fo the production of fuel for fast reactors, TVEL said on 3 March. Unique equipment has been created and installed, and dummy CFR-600 fuel assemblies have already been manufactured for testing.

The new production site was set up to service an export contract between TVEL and the Chinese company CNLY (part of China National Nuclear Corporation - CNNC) for the supply of uranium fuel for CFR-600 reactors. Construction of the first CFR-600 unit started in Xiapu County, in China's Fujian province in late 2017 followed by the second unit in December 2020. The contract is for the start-up fuel load, as well as refuelling for the first seven years. The start of deliveries is scheduled for 2023.

“The Russian nuclear industry has a unique 40 years of experience in operating fast reactors, as well as in the production of fuel for such facilities,” said TVEL President Natalya Nikipelova. “The Fuel Division of Rosatom is fulfilling its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in the development of fast reactor technologies. These are unique projects when foreign design fuel is produced in Russia. Since 2010, the first Chinese fast neutron reactor CEFR has been operating on fuel manufactured at the Machine-Building Plant, and for the supply of CFR-600 fuel, a team of specialists from MSZ and TVEL has successfully completed a complex high-tech project to modernise production,” she explained.

A special feature of the new section is its versatility: this equipment will be used to produce fuel intended for both the Chinese CFR-600 and CEFR reactors and the Russian BN-600 reactor of the Beloyarsk NPP. In the near future, the production of standard products for the BN-600 will begin.

The contract for the supply of fuel for the CFR-600 was signed in December 2018 as part of a governmental agreement between Russia and China on cooperation in the construction and operation of a demonstration fast neutron reactor in China. This is part of a wider comprehensive programme of cooperation in the nuclear energy sector over the coming decades. This includes serial construction of the latest Russian NPP power units with generation 3+ VVER-1200 reactors at two sites in China (Tianwan and Xudabao NPPs). A package of intergovernmental documents and framework contracts for these projects was signed in 2018 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
