Describing a Tourist Attraction

Posted by David S. Wills | Sep 12, 2017 | IELTS Tips , Speaking | 1

Describing a Tourist Attraction

In the IELTS Speaking Part 2 , you may be asked to describe a place. In fact, this is a very common thing to see on the cue card . One of the common topics is being asked to describe a tourist attraction. It may be someplace you wish to visit, or someplace you have already visited. But how can you describe a tourist attraction?

The Cue Card

For this part of the test, you will be given a cue card. On the cue card there will be things for you to talk about. You must talk about each of these items, with the total speech lasting 1-2 minutes. You have one minute to prepare. Your IELTS Speaking Part 2 cue card may look like this:

Describe a tourist attraction that you have visited. You should say What the attraction was When you visited it Why you went there And say whether you enjoyed the visit or not

It may be different, so pay attention to the exact words used. You need to talk about all parts, so don’t forget anything. It is helpful to make notes about each section if you have time – maybe just a word of vocabulary you want to remember.

Choosing a Subject to Talk About

One of the hardest things for an IELTS student is quickly choosing a subject to talk about in the IELTS Speaking Part 2. Honestly, even a native speaker might find this difficult! If someone asked me a really obscure question, it might take me a long time to plan out a good response! However, the key to success in this part of the exam is making a quick choice and then planning a talk accordingly.

For topics like travel and places, you should have no difficulty choosing. Think of some famous locations around the world :

  • the Eiffel Tower
  • London Bridge
  • the Acropolis
  • the Pyramids
  • the Great Wall of China

and so on…

Just pick one that you can think of and then plan your talk. Don’t waste time choosing a place.

Vocabulary for Tourist Attractions

If you have chosen a building to discuss, then you should take a look at my guide to vocabulary for buildings and structures as it should be very helpful. Make sure that you are able to describe the basic features of a building adequately. Think about its physical features as well as its location. What about colours? How about some adjectives to describe the impression it left on you or you think it would leave:

  • magnificent
  • overwhelming
  • fascinating

Of course, don’t just describe what the building was like (or is like). Remember that you need to devote your time to the exact instructions on the cue card. If it is asking you just for your experiences, then perhaps you may not need to do much description of the actual place. Also, remember that a tourist attraction may not be a building! It could describe a waterfall, a beach, or a river.

Examine the Question

In all parts of the IELTS Speaking Exam it is really important that you pay attention to the question and answer appropriately. Don’t think, “It’s about a tourist attraction!” and then freely talk about tourism. You need to answer the question exactly as it was intended.

Let’s look at the question again, and highlight key features:

Ok, so what are we being asked to do? We need to talk about a tourist attraction (ie a famous building, a museum or gallery, or a place of natural beauty). We need to firstly explain it – and this is where you can give some details. Then you should talk about the actual visit – when and why. Finally, explain whether you enjoyed it or not.

Sample Answer

A few years ago I was fortunate enough to visit Victoria Falls. This is a giant natural waterfall in Africa, considered one of the greatest sights in the world. It’s located on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia, so you can view it from either side. I travelled through Zimbabwe by train in order to reach it. The journey took a long time but it was worthwhile. I had heard about Victoria Falls during my childhood and always wanted to visit because it seemed so magnificent to me. You often see it in books and movies, and it appears like this magical place that couldn’t possibly exist in the real world. When you are about fifty miles away you can already see and hear it because it is so loud and the water vapor goes so high into the atmosphere. Nearby, it is just stunning to be close to this phenomenal spectacle . I really enjoyed my time there, but actually it was very expensive. That didn’t ruin my experience, but it would have been nicer to enjoy it without worry about the cost so much.

The Northern Lights as Tourist Attraction Essay

Introduction, aurora borealis, the best spots, the best time, works cited.

Natural phenomena have mystified people throughout history, and the northern lights (otherwise called aurora borealis) are one of them. The northern lights have been a source of curiosity for travelers and scientists alike, and they became the foundation for several legends. Today, a tourist can choose between many places to see this phenomenon, including on-foot hikes to the coldest regions of the planet, as well as leisure-based hotels and cruises.

The northern lights occur every day, but they are still difficult to catch due to the unpredictability of the weather. This natural phenomenon occurs when sun particles meet the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetic field (Waldek). At the particles are directed toward the planet’s poles, they turn into colorful waves. The name – Aurora Borealis – was given to it by Galileo Galilei, and it describes the nature of this occurrence. “Aurora” was a goddess of dawn, and “Boreas” was a god of the north wind (Waldek). Therefore, it becomes clear that the northern lights can be best seen near the North pole at night.

As stated above, aurora borealis can be seen in the northern hemisphere, closer to the pole. A specific “auroral zone” includes a radius of approximately 1,5 thousand miles around the North Pole (Waldek). Several countries are located in this area, including Canada and the United States, Iceland, Greenland, and Norway (Bloom). Moreover, the closest spot where a person can view the northern lights is the North Pole, which is located on a group of islands that shift and move in the Arctic Ocean (Bloom). However, this location is for the most adventurous travelers as it requires much experience and courage to survive the cold temperatures and the lack of any urban life.

For those who wish to see this phenomenon without losing some level of comfort, the tourist industry has developed a number of opportunities. For example, several northern regions of Canada constitute about 80% of all territories in the “auroral zone” (Waldek). Such locations as Yellowknife in Northwest Territories, Yukon, and Nunavut have spas, chalets, hotels, and hot spring resorts (Bloom; Waldek). Alaska is another spot for viewing the northern lights that offer many travel options, as the state has made the viewing of aurora borealis a part of its tourism economy (“Alaska Wildlife Guide”). The northern coast of Norway and the south of Iceland are other options for traveling in Europe (White et al. 102739.). Overall, several continents offer the ability to see the northern lights, and one’s preferences and budget dictate the best spot.

Apart from picking the right location to see the aurora borealis, one also has to choose the best time. According to experienced guides and scientists, the northern lights are best seen in the night sky when it is dark and clear of clouds (Waldek). Therefore, winter is the preferable season when the chance to see the northern lights is the highest (Waldek). As northern winters are defined by long, extremely cold nights, they create the best environment for observing this natural phenomenon.

Aurora borealis continues to attract tourists from all parts of the world, and the modern tourism industry has adjusted to offer many tours and experiences. This natural phenomenon can be seen near the North Pole, in a special “auroral zone” covering Canada, Norway, Iceland, and more. Alaskan resorts offer one of the most exciting experiences, and visiting these destinations during winter months gives one the best chance to see the northern lights.

Tourist Attraction: Positive and Negative Effects

Business organizations need to engage in corporate social responsibility (CSR) to improve the experiences of community members and remain sustainable. The selected case describes a company that intends to open a tourist attraction initiative. However, some of the involved stakeholders are unwilling to support the idea. This description examines the positive and negative effects of the idea to the host community.

The move to launch the tourist attraction in the selected town is capable of presenting various positive impacts. First, the move will create job opportunities for more people in the neighborhood and improve their income levels. Such a development is possible since the beneficiaries will get additional opportunities to sell various items and foodstuffs to the visitors (Goeldner & Ritchie, 2011). Some community members will be involved directly to provide transportation services to tourists. These examples mean that the citizens of the city will record increased income levels.

Second, most of the community members will acquire diverse ideas for doing business. Such an outcome is possible since some of the visitors could relate positively with the local citizens and learn new concepts from one another. Third, the idea of tourism could compel more companies to start their own initiatives and maximize the level of tourism in the identified city (Goeldner & Ritchie, 2011). Consequently, more members of the destination community will get new job opportunities and transform their lives. For example, some of the individuals could start to manufacture collector’s items and creative artworks for the tourists. The city will eventually record positive economic outcomes.

On the other hand, tourism is one of the economic activities that could result in negative impacts and worsen the experiences of people in the community. First, the initiative could affect the integrity of the natural environment due to the anticipated increase in the percentage of visitors. For instance, this outcome could be associated with the need to additional roads construction in order to meet the demands of tourism (Goeldner & Ritchie, 2011). Another example is that the individuals could pollute the environment through continuous littering. These issues explain why some of the stakeholders could be opposed to the suggested decision of launching the intended tourist attraction initiative.

Second, the level of insecurity could increase since the city would become home to additional visitors whose intentions might be unknown. Some of the attracted tourists in the city could be thieves and frauds. Such an occurrence can result in insecurity and discourage more people from pursuing their economic objectives. These possible outcomes will affect the wider community in a negative manner. Additionally, the neighborhood might experience high levels of air pollution, effluent discharges, and destruction of vegetation cover (Goeldner & Ritchie, 2011). These challenges explain why the involvement of all key stakeholders is essential to support the formulation of effective policies to dictate the future of tourism in the city.

The above discussion has identified tourism as an important economy activity that can transform the experiences of more citizens in a given society in a positive manner. All key stakeholders should collaborate to ensure that the suggested actions are pursued diligently to minimize the negative impacts that could be recorded. These measures will encourage those who are opposed to the idea to change their minds and make the tourism initiative sustainable.

Extract of sample "TOURIST ATTRACTION SITE VISIT"

No: Tourist Attraction Site Visit I am a very crazy soccer spectator. Houston opening games are going to be wonderful series of events. I read on a website that Houston is a great tourist destination. Houston Dynamo games are series of soccer events that are organized on yearly basis. I watched live games on TV in 2006 and since then I am fan of these events.I met head of organizing committee including Houston mayor and asked several questions regarding the events. I asked about hotels in the city for comfortable stay during the events.

Mayor told me about various hotels in downtown Houston with cheap rates. These hotels provide amazing facilities to tourists. I asked organizing committee about procedures for purchasing tickets for soccer season. They replied, online tickets for complete season can be purchased at cheap rates and it is also possible to select the place of own choice for watching the matches in stadium. I asked organizers that what all facilities are available at the stadium for watching soccer competitions. They replied, they have introduced great facilities like, bathrooms, food, cheerleaders, sound effects and screens for adding all sorts of fun in the events.

Who all are tough teams in the event? Mayor said, “Houston Dynamo” and “Dallas” are the best teams of the event. I asked how many stadiums are available for hosting the event. Mayor counted four stadiums including a newly constructed state of the art stadium. What is tailgating in Houston? Mayor said that you have snacks and hotdogs before start of the match is tailgating. What are the other tourist destinations in Houston? Mayor replied, space Centre and downtown aquarium are worth visiting places.

Organizing committee told me to visit Orange Avenue as well. This avenue provides free souvenirs, food, shirts and a band plays there to entertain people. I am enjoying the opening games 2014 more than my expectations. It is so fascinating and colourful for people of any place in the world. I heard about the Houston and soccer events from my friend and then visited online sources. After coming here, I am not ready to leave this place now. Event is so organized that tourists do not feel any problem in their activities.

There is one problem that spectators cannot buy single ticket for a match and they have to buy for complete season. Organizers need to look into this matter. Moreover, stadiums with more capacity should be constructed for accommodating huge crowds. Dynamo started the season against “New England Revolution” on 8 Mar 2014. There is a long schedule and every team has to play one match with each other. It is a long season and soccer fever will be on its peak throughout 2014. “Dynamo” will end season by continuous home games against D.C. United on 12 October 2014.

“Dynamo” will end season against New England on 16 October 2014. Finale of the season is scheduled in Chicago on October 24. The 2014 home schedule is busy one including seven Saturday home dates, 5 Sunday matches and three Friday matches. Thus, I recommend soccer lovers to must visit Houston dynamo games for great entertainment. You will get all the necessities of life just at your doorstep.

Shwedagon Pagoda Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, was the capital of Myanmar, is known for its colonial architecture, which although decaying, remains an almost unique example of a 19th-century British colonial capital. Friendly street vendors, traditionally dressed local people, attracting old Chevrolet buses and trishaws, all make a feel like a museum of Yangon downtown life.

Shwedagon, the heart of Yangon, is the most profoundly honoured pagoda in the country and interesting history behind.

According to the legend, the Shwedagon Pagoda was constructed during the time of the Buddha which is more than 2,500 years ago and where the holy hair relics of the Buddha were enshrined. Towering to a height of 326 feet (100 meters) above the city, Shwedagon Pagoda is the famous landmark noticeable from miles around. It is one of the wonders of the world and the most revered pagoda in Southeast Asia.
